'Kranti' movie review: Darshan delivers entertainment and a strong social message

Darshan is a bonafide star whose fanbase only expands with every entertainer he delivers. With Kranti he states that revolutions are born of hope. Through the hero’s inner struggles, the film addresses the issues in the education system.

Albeit filled with abundant action for the masses Kranti has a universal message. With 12,000 government schools shut across Karnataka, resulting in about 75,000 jobless teachers, and over 20 lakh students affected, director Harikrishna uses this real-life situation to spin a story of a messiah redeeming people from hopelessness. He seems to have immense faith in Darshan’s star power that he has gone ahead with a simplistic film filled with regular ingredients like action, romance, music, and punch dialogues.

The story revolves around Kranti Narayan (Darshan), a business tycoon, residing in Europe for 20 years abiding by his father Bhargav Narayan’s (Ravichandran) instruction. Being an alumnus of a government school, he is invited by his favourite teacher (B Suresha) to attend the Centenary celebrations of the school. This event changes his life forever and he begins a revolution in the educational system. He takes the fight on with MNCs trying to take over the government schools, and does his effort bear fruits in the end? Tells the climax.

Darshan's first collaboration with Harikrishna, Yajamana, was based on a village and its fight to keep an oil company at bay, and Kranti yet again is packed with mass entertainment along with a social message. And when the subject is about education, dramatic sequences of the plight of teachers, students, hungry media, corporate builders, and politicians among many other elements come to the fore as common occurrences, and Kranti does not disengage with any of them.

Harikrishna, who has roped in a mass hero to speak about an important issue like education, seem to be unbothered by the film’s duration. Certain sequences set in a train during the first half feel rudderless,  but the events in the second half add a lot of value to the overall output.

The anchor of the story is clearly Darshan’s screen presence and stardom. Harikrishna often says, "Never underestimate the credibility of a star." and he has mounted his film based on this hope. Apart from the usual fights and songs, Darshan delivers impactful messages in Kranti.

Ravichandran delivers a memorable performance. Tarun Arora is definitely a new addition to the list of stylish villains. The rest of the actors including Ravi Shankar,  Girija Lokesh, Umashree, Sumalatha, Mukhyamantri Chandru, Samyuktha Hornad, Vainidhi Jagadish, and Dharmanna Kadur add value to the film. Rachita Ram is seen in an adequate role, and as a typical commercial heroine appears in two songs.

Harikrishna, who is also the composer of the film, elevates the emotions with his background score. The songs Don't Mess With Him and  Dharani are already ruling the playlists, Pushpavathi by Nimika Rathnakar and Bombe featuring a shirtless Darshan are celebration-worthy for the fans.

Cinematographer Karunakar scores with his visual pattern and angles. To sum up, Kranti, which comes with rich production value, is ably shouldered by Darshan. Aside from the usual masala, the audiences have a revolutionary message about education to take home while leaving the theatres.

Director: V Harikrishna Cast: Darshan, Rachita Ram, Ravichandran, Ravishankar,  Tarun Raj  Arora, Samyuktha Hornad, Vainidhi Jagadish, Mukhyamantri Chandru, and Umashree Rating: 3/5

Kranti review: Darshan’s entertaining onscreen revolution echoes plight of government schools

The Challenging Star delivers yet another typical over-the-top commercial action-drama but with education at its epicentre.

A treat for fans!

Kranti (Kannada)

  • Cast: Darshan, V Ravichandran, Rachita Ram, Mukhyamantri Chandru, Umasri, Sumalatha Ambareesh, Samyukta Hornad, Tarun Arora, Sampath Raj, Achyuth Kumar, Sadhu Kokila, and Ravi Shankar
  • Director: V Harikrishna
  • Producers: Shylaja Nag and B Suresha
  • Music: V Harikrishna
  • Runtime: 2 hours 43 minutes
  • Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Emraan Hashmi, and Revathy
  • Director: Maneesh Sharma
  • Producer: Aditya Chopra
  • Music: Pritam Chakraborty
  • Runtime: 2 hours 35 minutes

The film Kranti hits two targets in one shot — the entertainment and educational systems, especially the plight of government schools.

Plus, it has all the elements required to make it commercially viable, something which also satisfies Darshan’s die-hard fans.

Music composer-director V Harikrishna penned the story and dialogues besides handling music and direction. He has dished out a well-balanced action-drama backed by a sensible subject that is at least good as a one-time watch for the audience.

The story is simple and revolves around Kranti Rayanna (Darshan), the son of a wealthy, respected man played by V Ravichandran.

Kranti does his schooling in a government school where he learned the best lessons in life through his beloved teacher.

However, he is sent abroad for a reason and Kranti ends up becoming a very successful businessman.

This plot allows the director to fulfil another essential element of the commercial venture which is to shoot in foreign locations.

Kranti returns to India to be a part of his government school’s centenary celebrations and the drama unfolds for almost three hours.

Senior actors and the bad guys are just the necessary part of the film while it is Darshan’s show all along until it hits the climax.

Ticks all boxes

As the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, the film makes sure to present the most important issue of privatisation of education and how it’s affecting society through the charismatic onscreen presence of Darshan.

The director serves the “usuals”, too, including half-a-dozen fights where Darshan alone defeats no less than 50 to 100 men.

Other necessary elements such as the introduction scene, fights, romantic number, a short and cute love interest, a pinch of comedy, father-son sentiment, and a special number are among the long list of boxes that the makers have ticked for a paisa-vasool movie.

A feast for Darshan’s fans

The aforementioned aspects hold good only for Darshan fans and those who watch movies for timepass and do not mind a lesson or two on some issues.

Well, this implies that Kranti is not for serious minds.

Kranti also provides ample opportunity for the Challenging Star to take a dig at his real-life opponents and competitors through cleverly written dialogues that carry a punch.

It’s a must for Darshan’s fans. But for others, the film is a regular commercial movie with some lessons on the educational system.

There’s nothing extraordinary about the film, yet it is not so ordinary either. If it still doesn’t interest some of you, then wait for the OTT release.

'Kranti' movie review: Old-school and tiresome

Follow Us :

Kannada (Theatres)

Director: V Harikrishna

Cast: Darshan, Rachita Ram, V Ravichandran, P Ravi Shankar

Rating: 2.5/5

One doesn't expect a concrete solution from mainstream films dealing with social issues. But one expects the film to balance the theme with entertainment. When a superstar is involved, is this too much to ask for?

In Kranti , no effort seems to have gone into looking beyond cliched ideas from the director as the plot remains a rehash of several blockbusters which trod a similar path ( Sivaji , Maharashi and Darshan's own Yajamana ). Writer-director V Harikrishna scores a blank in making a star film with a message.

Read | 'Made in Bengaluru' review: A pretentious portrayal of Bengaluru's spirit

Darshan plays Kranti Rayanna, one of the world's most successful businessmen. He returns to his hometown from Europe after 20 years to celebrate the centenary celebrations of the government school he studied in. Once back in India, Kranti learns the dirty truths of privatisation of education. He takes it upon himself to save thousands of government schools from going extinct.

More than the plight of the students, the film seems interested in showcasing Darshan as a man from another planet. There is no regard for the law of physics. In an overdose of fight scenes, Kranti sends the villains and cars flying. Darshan even rips off his body for a romantic number ( Bombe bombe ) with Rachita Ram.

Sure, the 'masala' films ought to concentrate on star power. But the film is replete with unintentionally hilarious action scenes, the most ridiculous being the one shot at a basketball court.

Except for a scene involving government school kids and the education minister (not a major spoiler), there are no surprises in the plot. Some dialogues are sure to get a rousing reception from fans. They give a glimpse of Darshan's enormous potential in the mainstream space. With his strong baritone and towering personality, he is tailormade for the genre. Yet, his films leave us wanting more.

The caricaturish villains (Tarun Arora, P Ravi Shankar) and inconsistent humour pulls the film down further. Kranti has no earthly reason to go on for nearly three hours. It exasperates you with melodrama as a host of senior actors (V Ravichandran, Umashree, and Mukhyamantru Chandru) are wasted in half-cooked roles.

Music composers and cinematographers venturing into direction is a common practice in the film industry. But why don't they collaborate with quality writers? Why don't they prioritise screenwriting? Harikrishna fails to churn out a crackling 'masala' film because he clings to an old-school template.

As for Darshan, the kind of fan following he has is the stuff of dreams. But is their immense loyalty repaid with worthy films? Kranti has a slew of dialogues aimed at his detractors, including one targeting the TV channels. Are they enough for a comprehensive film? No. It's time he became ambitious with his choice of scripts.

Kranti review: A tedious rehash that relies entirely on Darshan's star power

In all fairness, nothing that you encounter in  Kranti  should come as a surprise. The film was meant to be a bona fide Darshan Thoogudeepa vehicle that his fans, or 'celebrities' as he refers to them, have been waiting for quite some time. And  Kranti  offers just that and not a shred more. Slo-mo walks, cheesy self-referential punch lines, SUVs tossed in the air every other minute, and a wafer-thin plot to tie this all up—V Harikrishna's second outing as director brims with cliches. But should you be watching it as a ‘Challenging Star' fan, the film is a satisfying big screen experience.

Yet, if you were to spare a thought for the plotline buried under the frenzy, you are likely to walk out of the cinema hall feeling puzzled, not knowing what just transpired, or why it did in the first place. That is if you can make sense of the film through the thumping hoots and cries.  Kranti  is a lazy attempt that uses the superstar's fandom to offer a film devoid of nuance or authenticity. To make things worse, it uses a social issue to drive the story, but the insincerity in the approach is so glaring.

Kranti Rayanna, the owner of a group of multinational enterprises, returns home from Europe to take part in the centenary celebrations of the government school he studied in. Despite having lived abroad for more than 20 years, the Kannada patriot in him is still alive. Should the timely flashbacks fail to enunciate this, take a look at Darshan's screen name—'Kranti' meaning revolution and 'Rayanna', after the real-life revolutionary, Sangolli Rayanna. But Kranti Rayanna isn't aware of the threat looming over a few thousand government schools in Karnataka. Salatri Educational Institutions, owned by an appropriately evil businessman, is out to acquire all the 12,000 government schools in the state to remodel them as lucrative private schools. Salatri is aided by a ganglord and a template MLA, which means that the acquisition is likely to happen through unruly means. Government schools crumble down, a few innocent students die as a result, and more than 75,000 teachers lose their jobs. Enter Kranti, the brawny messiah.

As much as the conflict allows the director to elevate his hero, V Harikrishna and co-writers fail miserably in imbuing the script with the thrills that one seeks in a film of this kind. We know that Kranti has all the resources to tackle the problem. But the film fails to build the tension or give the villains equal weightage. Granted one doesn't watch a film of this sort expecting a solid character arc, but that isn't to say that a mass film must be completely lacking in logic. What kind of enterprise does Kranti Rayanna own? How does the villain, as diabolical as he may be, get away with the destruction of more than 10,000 schools?  Kranti , the film, is silly both in writing and in execution, and is not bothered about offering its audience the fun they deserve. Instead, what Darshan fans get is a sluggish rehash of a film that robs you of three hours from your life.

Rachita Ram, despite being a star in her own right, is replaceable because her character Usha, Kranti's childhood crush, adds little to the film. That's true about most other characters in the film, with the only exception being V Ravichandran. The veteran actor plays Kranti's father Bhargava Rayannaand a tiny spark appears in the film every time it tries to explore the father-son dynamic. Senior actors Umashree and Mukhyamantri Chandru, too, are part of the cast but have no bearing on the narrative. B Suresha (co-producer of the film) who plays Kranti's school teacher and the crusader against the private school mafia, puts on an adequate performance.

Tarun Arora, best known for playing Anshuman in Jab We Met, makes his Kannada debut as the villain in  Kranti , but is mostly only spelling out outrageously predictable lines. His accomplices P Ravishankar and Tamil actor Sampath Raj are likely to have come on board without having read the script.

But does the film deliver on the promise of a Darshan-spectacle? The answer could be a reluctant yes. Right off the bat, Harikrishna announces that he is offering his version of fan service. As a music composer, he does well in the mass scenes. Darshan, well aware of the expectations, highlights those moments with his quintessential swagger. Every time he exudes that confidence, the cinema hall would get energised. I even saw fans running up to the screen with large diyas to worship the superstar—the clock was yet to strike 6.00 am. To make things better, the 45-year-old shows off his newly beefed-up physique. Even though his face suggests that he is worn out, fans are enthralled that he hasn't given up yet.

It isn't that Darshan cannot hold his own as a performer. His previous film  Roberrt  was testament to the fact that he can pull off a tricky role when under the right supervision. But in  Kranti , you see the star in him clinging fervently to a glory that is threatened by the onset of the pan-India phenomenon. As much as he is entitled to do so, his insistence to serve only the people of Karnataka comes at a time when superstars around him are claiming nationwide recognition. One hopes to see him strive harder and better, and not mindlessly pick projects that offer nothing new to his fans. Although  Kranti  works as a mass entertainer, the film is an injustice to his fans who deserve better.

Kranti review: Darshan tries valiantly to salvage Harikrishna’s uninspiring film, but the script fails him and how!

Last Updated: 11.38 AM, Jan 26, 2023

Story: When the Salatri Group attempts to takeover 12000 government schools to privatise them, it is up to renowned entrepreneur Kranti Rayana (Darshan) to come to the rescue. Taking on a private group is fair game, but how will he get the government also to toe the line and ensure the institutions remain open to children?

Review: During the pandemic, when pictures of Challenging Star Darshan emerged, they were far from flattering. He had gained a lot of weight, his hairline was receding and was in no shape to make an onscreen appearance. The minute his film Kranti was announced, though, he hit the gym with a vengeance. “When my celebrities head out to watch my films, I have to make sure that the outing is worthwhile; it has to be paisa vasool. Not only does the film have to be entertaining, but I also need to look presentable. Else, why will they pay for the ticket when they have other options like, say, Hrithik Roshan, etc.,” he had told OTTplay during the promotions of the film. It didn’t stop naysayers; the trolling continued, with a fresh boost of energy each time a glimpse from Kranti was released. Yet another ‘jathre’ film, they said.

image_item

Throughout it all, Darshan stood his ground. He’s made a Kannada film for his celebrities, with a subject relevant to his land, he said, adding that audiences would not be disappointed with Kranti. Well, the moment of truth is here. Kranti is in theatres today. Does it live up to Darshan’s promise? Sadly, no. On a very personal note, the best way to describe director-composer Harikrishna's film would be, 'unbearable'.

Darshan in a still from the first look of Kranti

As a filmmaker, Harikrishna loses the plot fairly early on. Oh wait, what plot, one may ask. The filmmaker's entire focus is on trying to play to the gallery, but even with a star like Darshan in hand, he fails miserably. His efforts to celebrate his hero onscreen gives die-hard fans a few whistle-worthy moments, although they defy logic and how! As a director's actor, Darshan plays along and valiantly tries to salvage the film, but this is even beyond him and just cannot be fixed.

Even with a formidable cast at his disposal, Harikrishna fails at giving even one a character worth mentioning; it's all utterly caricaturish. Most of them do not get more than a line or two and apart from lending their name to the star cast, do not really contribute anything worthwhile to the narrative. Of course, they cannot be blamed, given that Harikrishna’s script doesn’t offer them anything to sink their teeth into. He should, perhaps, stick to his core competency – compose music – and leave the filmmaking to others.

The biggest failing, of course, is in the choice of antagonist. Darshan needed a formidable opponent, but what he gets is model-actor Tarun Arora, whose only job is to strut around in designer suits. Hell, he is actually kitted out better than Darshan for the most part. The less said the better about P Ravi Shankar and Mutant Raghu as the father-son baddie duo.

The question, then, is whether there is anything worth writing about Kranti. Yet again, that’s a resounding no. The overwhelming feeling is to shed a tear for Darshan and his ‘conviction’ in the ‘subject’. How is it that the entire team of Kranti was so confident about it? More importantly, how does one unsee the travesty that was Bombe Bombe.

Rachita and Darshan in a still from the song, Bombe

Verdict: The film highlights pertinent issues about government-run schools, but that’s where it ends. There is no solution offered. Does Darshan really prove his superstardom? That remains to be seen because this Kranti is going to solely depend on his celebrities. This is not even for hardcore commercial movie fans.

Kranti Movie Review: Darshan delivers entertainment and a strong social message

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

Cast: Darshan, Rachita Ram, Ravichandran, Ravishankar, Tarun Raj  Arora, Samyuktha Hornad, Vainidhi Jagadish, Mukhyamantri Chandru, and Umashree Director: V Harikrishna The story revolves around Kranti Narayan (Darshan), a business tycoon, residing in Europe for 20 years abiding by his father Bhargav Narayan’s (Ravichandran) instruction.

Darshan's first collaboration with Harikrishna, Yajamana , was based on a village and its fight to keep an oil company at bay, and Kranti yet again is packed with mass entertainment along with a social message.

Though the certain sequences set in foreign are made well, the ones in the train in the first half feels rudderless. However, the events in the second half add a lot of value to the overall output.

The anchor of the story is clearly Darshan’s screen presence and stardom. Harikrishna often says, "Never underestimate the credibility of a star." and he has mounted his film based on this hope. Apart from the usual fights and songs, Darshan delivers impactful messages in Kranti .

To sum up, Kranti , which comes with rich production value, is ably shouldered by Darshan. Aside from the usual masala, the audiences have a revolutionary message about education to take home while leaving the theatres.

Kranti Movie Review & Ratings | Hit or Flop?

Kranti Review : Dashan was most recently seen in the film Robert, which was criticised for its poor financial performance at the box office but lauded for the technical perfection of its production. Now, he’s back with a brand-new action drama film titled “Kranti,” which was released not too long ago. The songs have generated a great deal of buzz around the upcoming film, and when the teaser trailer was released, it got people even more enthusiastic. But the movie has only just been released today, so let’s not waste any time and dive right into the review to find out if it’s worth seeing.

Kranti Review

Despite the fact that his father owns several schools, Kranti (Darshan) is a carefree guy. However, he is powerless when a politician takes over his father’s schools. After a long absence, he reappears as a wealthy individual who embarks on a career in the education sector with the intention of liberating his father’s schools from the control of politicians. Will Kranti, in the end, acquire control of the educational institutions? The audience needs to be shown in the movie how he got to be so wealthy.

Movie Verdict

Our tough star Darshan’s film Kranti did a good job of integrating educational backdrop films with a commercial feature, which is a difficult task that is not new for an Indian audience but is accomplished fairly effectively in this film. The movie begins in the same manner as a typical commercial film, with a hero making his entrance and establishing his character. The first half of the movie follows a templet-based screenplay with songs; these scenes include a love track, comedic moments, and conflict with the antagonist. There are also a few dialogues about education.

The real story starts in the second half, when we learn about Kranti’s past and how it relates to schools. This keeps us interested in the story for a while. The second half also has some interesting parts about education, but too many commercials make us feel bored.

Darshan as Kranti performs an adequate job, as this character doesn’t stretch him at all, but he entertains with his swag. Rachitha Ram also does little to distinguish herself in her role, but she manages to win over a small percentage of viewers with her bubbly performance.

V Harikrishna is in charge of directing the movie. He gives it an interesting setting but doesn’t do a great job of showing it because he mostly focused on Darshan instead of the story. Some of his writing is good, though, and the conversations about education make us think. Technically, Kranti looks good. Karunakar A’s Visuals made it look even better, and V. Harikrishna himself scored the music. His songs aren’t great, but he liked the background score. The rest of the technical team did their best to tell the story.

Kranti is, all things considered, a respectable commercial film that is suitable for viewing by a select group of moviegoers.

Movie Verdict

Education backdrop films are not new for an Indian audience but blending them into the commercial film is a big challenge and our challenging star Darshan’s film Kranti made it quite well. The film starts off like a regular commercial film with a heroic introduction and his character establishment, the first half follows a templet-based screenplay with songs, here love track, comedy, and conflict with the villain ends a few dialogues about education.

The second half is where the actual story begins like Kranti’s back story and what was the connection with schools that makes us invested in the story for a while and second half has few elements about education which are quite interesting but too many commercials elements make us feel bored throughout the film.

Darshan as Kranti does a fair job as this role doesn’t challenge him at all but he entertained with his swag, Rachitha Ram did a passable job with her role and did nothing much to perform but she engages few sections of the audience with her bubbliness, V. Ravichandran showed his experience though his role is limited, Sumalatha does a fair job and rest of the cast did well.

V Harikrishna directs the film, he chooses an interesting backdrop but partly succeeds in presenting the film, as he mostly focused on Darshan rather than the story, however, his writing is good in parts, and dialogues about education make us think.

Technically, Kranti looks good, Karunakar A’s Visuals made it look even richer and V. Harikrishna himself scored the music, his songs are not up to the mark but he was impressed with the background score, and the rest of the technical team did their best as per the story requires.

Plus Points:

  • Background Score
  • Few Dialogues

Minus Points:

  • Cinematography
  • Performances
  • Predictable screenplay

Rating: 3/5
