Essay on Museums and Historical Places

This is an example of an essay on museums and historical places .

It is a causes (or 'reasons') and solutions essay as you have to explain why local people visit these places less than tourists, and then present ways to encourage more local people to visit.

Many museums and historical sites are mainly visited by tourists rather than local people.

Why is this?

What can be done to encourage local people to visit museums and historical sites?

Answer Both Parts

It is a common mistake for IELTS candidates to only discuss one aspect, either causes or solutions, rather than both.

You should always read the question carefully to make sure that you know exactly what you are being asked to do.

This will avoid you making this mistake, which is important as partially answering the question will lead to your score being reduced.

Take a look at the question, then examine the model answer and read the comments that follow.

Museums and Historical Places Essay Model

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Essay on Museums and Historical Places - Model Answer

Although most places have sites of historical interest and a variety of museums to visit, it is predominantly tourists who come to see them, not local people. This essay will examine the reasons for this before suggesting some possible methods of attracting local people.

The main factor is the different motivations of tourists and local people. For a tourist, the aim when visiting another country, city or region, is to learn about that new place and possibly to understand its culture and history. Visiting historical sites and museums is an excellent way to do this. On the other hand, local people have often lived in the area for much of their lives, and have either learned this at school or understand it through personal experience. In addition, tourists are on holiday and have set aside time and money for these activities. However, local people may be too busy working and prefer to prioritise their spending on such things as school, shopping and socialising.

Despite this, attendance of local people could be encouraged in a variety of ways. First and foremost, the perception of museums and historical sites could be changed by holding events at these places. For example, they could hold cultural festivals or galas for the community to celebrate a unique aspect of that particular place. Another possibility is to have special promotions, such as a reduced price or free tickets provided in local newspapers and magazines. Related to this, concession cards could also be provided to local people so they are encouraged to come more regularly.

In conclusion, tourists have different motivating factors to local people, which accounts for the reasons that they are more likely to visit museums and historical sites. That said, it is possible to encourage attendance by local people through cultural events and promotions.

The essay on museums and historical places begins well by introducing the topic and then explaining in the thesis statement the purpose of the essay .

The first body paragraph clearly deals with the first aspect of the question, explaining the reasons why tourists prefer to attend museums and historical sites than local people. Two reasons are given for this.

The second body paragraph then sets out possible solutions to the problem of low attendance of local people. Two solutions are presented with some examples to support them.

The conclusion then summarises the main arguments that have been presented.

The essay is thus well-organised and supported, and has a good range of grammar and vocabulary, with high levels of accuracy.

The essay would thus score highly in the IELTS test.

The diagrams show a museum and its surroundings in 1990 and 2010.

The map details renovations to a museum and the surrounding grounds from 1990 to 2010. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the museum itself decreased the square footage for exhibitions and outside there were significant alterations to the surrounding area to allow for greater access and leisure.

Internally, the museum in 1990 contained a store room in the top left corner, various exhibition spaces on all sides, and a small shop in the bottom right. By 2010, the only modification was that the shop was extended towards the left at the expense of the adjacent exhibition room.

Outside the main structure, the largest single change was the expansion of the car park on the right side which subsumed a garden beneath it. The paths and roads as well as the garden above the car park were unchanged. The final difference was the cottage in the bottom left corner across from the museum was renovated to become a cafe.

INTRODUCTION

Museums, historical sites, classical art and music, and so on have no financial benefits in our society. In this essay, I will focus on the importance of roots and the dangers of technology. (33 words)

It is in museums and at historical sites that we are reminded of our history. History is the way in which we keep in contact with our roots, which in turn provides us with a sense of belonging. Then life and the future become more meaningful. For example, when people know the history of their country and nation, they have a better understanding of their present situation. They understand that they are part of something that is much greater than themselves.

Modern technology is rapidly replacing the things that were important to our societies in the past. Traditions and customs are disappearing at an alarming rate. That is to say, crafts and art forms are being practiced by fewer and fewer people.

To maintain museums and the like requires money. Governments should make it one of their priorities to provide the funds for the maintenance of existing places and for developing new ones. For instance, research into the past should be going on. In this way, more information about our history can be gathered and shared with the public. (179 words)

Aspects such as our background, the effect of modern technology, and the funding of museums have been dealt with in this essay. This leads us to conclude that some of the taxpayers’ money should be used for this worthy cause. (40 words)

Many museums charge for admission while others are free. Do you think the advantages of charging people for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages?

Museums are educational places which are beneficial for people in societies. However, these days, people have to pay an entrance fee to enter many museums. Although this phenomenon can lead to negative effects, I believe that there are more positive effects.

It cannot be denied that price of tickets can bring about detrimental impacts to people, societies, and the museums themselves. From people’s perspective, they are discouraged to visit the museum and not able to access useful information and knowledge freely, particularly the poor because they cannot afford such amount. From societies’ perspective, citizens have fewer opportunities to access vitally significant places to learn history, science, art, and many other essential subjects. From museums’ perspective, they cannot attain one of their objectives to educate people. Moreover, they may have to close down as they lose more of their customers.

Despite aforementioned disadvantages, I am convinced that brings about a myriad of advantages. Firstly, museums will have money to operate which covers their business overhead such as personnel cost, , electricity and water bills. Secondly, the museums can generate their own revenue to improve the place effectively to attract people, for example, to update their exhibits and keep the place clean and good-looking. Having visited many museums myself, I have learnt that many museums which sell tickets are better than those that do not charge for tickets in terms of places, information, and management.

In conclusion, although I recognize that the museums ticket sales can cause drawbacks to stakeholders in societies, I believe that museums should not remain free for all so as to be operated and developed most effectively.

This is a great example of a Band 8 essay. The test-taker covered both the advantages and the disadvantages of museums charging an admission fee. The ideas are conveyed, extended and supported with relevant examples. The order in which the information is presented makes sense, and there is sufficient use of linking words. The range of vocabulary is impressive. Even though there are some instances of less-than-accurate word choice, most of this essay is error-free. Grammatical errors are also rare here. All in all, this essay seems worthy of IELTS Band 8.

Museums are a great place filled with wonder and mystery, where an individual learns about how their ancestors lived, what kind of items they used, etc. Museums expand our horizons. To be precise, Museums are a storehouse of old artefacts, objects, history, sculptures, etc and some of them charge a hefty amount from the visitors as an entrance fee. I believe the advantage of this entry fee far outweighs its disadvantage because many museums wouldn’t be able to protect their ancestral possessions without it.

Museums are a place where an individual gets an opportunity to see rare artefacts and gain knowledge about them. Apart from that, there are a myriad of advantages when these museums charge an entry fee. Museum authorities can use the entrance fee for many purposes. For instance, the amount can be used for time-to-time renovation, utility bills, electricity charges, safety and security to operate these institutions properly. Moreover, they can invest that amount wisely to ensure a memorable experience for all museum-goers. Also, the museums will be able to generate revenue to improve the place productively and keep it clean and attractive to get more visitors. From my personal experience, I have seen many museums that charge entrance fees have good facilities when compared to those museums that do not charge fees, w.r.t the management, collections, cleanliness of the place, etc.

In spite of the various advantages of collecting entrance fees, charging a hefty amount on visitors can undeniably have some adverse effects. Firstly, the entrance fee can affect the popularity of museums as the citizens will hesitate to visit museums, and this will majorly reduce the number of visitors. Secondly, people will not be able to access essential information and gain knowledge about historical relics, antiquity, etc. As a result, the museums will be on the verge of extinction.

To sum up, making all museums accessible without the entrance fee would encourage more people to appreciate and visit, but it won’t be operated and developed effectively. Thus, posing a nominal entrance fee can be verily advantageous in several ways for the museum.

While most museums are funded by the state government, some museums charge an entry fee for their visitors. People are divided in their opinion whether this step is advantageous or not. So, in this essay, both the pros and cons of collecting admission fees will be discussed.

To begin with the advantages, the first one is that any fee levied by the management to allow entry into the premises of the storehouse of knowledge, like a museum, is put into use for maintenance of the establishment like electricity bills, repairing, showcasing the information, planning for surveillance, etc. Secondly, the allowance is used to pay the employees of the museums who are a cicerone for the visitors. Therefore, the amount paid for the visitation provides a livelihood for a group of people working in the organization. Most importantly, the state-of-art facilities housed in these museums need meticulous upkeep. Antique pieces tend to crumble down or get disfigured very easily. As a result, a huge amount of capital that is utilized to prolong their viability is collected from these entry fees.

However, the amount of money charged for ingress into the museums can become a burden for low-income families. Their inability to afford will prohibit them from accessing the limitless data. Consequently, it might result in the children of those families feeling left behind and may result in insecurity or acrimony towards the parents. Furthermore, every museum has its own source of donations and fundings. Excess capital collected through the entry fees may arouse avarice among the management.

To sum up, it is notable that the advantage of charging a minuscule amount for admission to the prized establishment is more important than providing free services because nothing valuable in life comes free. The government can set up programs to facilitate the admission of people who cannot pay the amount and keep a watch so that the money thus collected is used for genuine purposes.

Nobody can deny the fact that, In present scenario, English language play a crucial role in our society by reason of other than native language, English use as a secondary language in every country.Hence learning English at school is more Vital than learning local languages. According to my point of view, we are bount to write ,read and understand the English language owing to capable of interact with other people in any country.On the one hand, If we take the  example of ielts test where only English language require for crack the test.On the other hand if we talk about job interview where the employer take the interview only on in English. So what should we do.Our system called that learning English is an absolutely important for us rather than learning local languages. Local languages supported only on early stage of our life as well as in local area.If we would decide to go abroad therefore English language require.Many of the parents taught English language for the betterment of their child in an initial stage of there life. Several families should try to communicate with their children only in English so that they do not face problem in the future. At the end , in the light of above mentioned aspects, I hold the view that, it is a government responsibility to take a charge of equality of every languages. This wil help to the survival of local languages. Local languages almost at the stage of dying out. Now a days English is a main language.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:
