What a beautiful evening last Thursday at the Home Works Warehouse Banquet! One goal — in addition to fundraising to scale repair efforts in 2024 — was to introduce as many new faces to Home Works as possible, and nearly one hundred people in attendance were able to hear about the Home Works mission. We feasted on great food from Southern Way Catering in the warehouse and heard an inspiring God story from speaker Dr. Gabbie Rhinehart. Thank you to the night’s sponsors and vendors (featured in the last photo), our planning team and Board members for inviting new faces, and to all who generously gave. We give thanks for each of you this week and always.

Over the past few weeks, Colliers and LCK team members across the state participated in our “Colliers Gives” United Way campaign. Our staff and company raised $112,144 for local United Way organizations and we had 90 staff members participate in a Day of Service accounting for 523 community service hours. Together, we made a big impact on the lives of five families in South Carolina working with Home Works of America for our Day of Service. We provided these homeowners with a safer, healthier and happier home, making sure they had a place to be “home for the holidays”. We completed a wide variety of projects across the state that included yard work, painting, enhancing accessibility, outdoor maintenance, replacing front and rear decking, door locks and house numbers. Thank you to everyone who participated for helping to make a difference in our local communities! A donor thank you to the Sisters of Charity Foundation of SC! Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awarded 100 grants this fall to nonprofits (including Home Works) throughout SC who are working to reduce poverty. We are grateful for the continued support and investment in our shared mission. Some fun facts: Home Works and the Foundation were both founded in ‘96. Plus, Home Works volunteers have served 3,300+ homeowners since then, and the Foundation has awarded 3,300+ grants in as much time. We are grateful to partner in helping bring about long lasting change for vulnerable neighbors!

Ladder Theft - a God story: When a stack of locked ladders was recently stolen from a Home Works repair site, volunteers and staff were discouraged to say the least. Ladders are a tool needed at nearly every repair effort. BUT the community rallied, many donating funds and ladders to help replace the many that were stolen! We are thankful and encouraged by support of those across the state to ensure repairs — and all the ladders they require — can continue to happen for those who need them.

BEFORE ➡️ AFTER. Lexington homeowner Ms. W’s leaky roof had contributed to growing rot from holes in her ceiling, leading to major health issues like mold. Lexington/Richland District 5 students from C.A.T.S. (The Center for Advanced Technical Studies), led by teacher Michael Diaz, were able to repair Ms. W's ceilings recently after a previous re-roofing effort by other volunteers, sealing her home from water and improving her air quality and overall health. These volunteers also learned new technical skills in the process, and the work was funded in part by community partner Lexington Medical Center Foundation. A win-win!

Do you know the value of a volunteer hour? While in many ways we can't put a price on it, there’s some fascinating research from the School of Public Policy at University of Maryland, College Park that estimates a volunteer hour is worth $31.80! This number is based on average earnings of private workers and the type/value of the services volunteers provide to different organizations. 🏠 In short, volunteers are critical pieces of this home repair mission. YOU provide the boots on the ground to serve others by repairing their homes year after year. A humble thank you from Home Works to all our volunteers.

One of the things we love the most at Town is being a part of our community. This summer, we're inspired by the famous phrase, "There's no place like home!" So, we're holding a silent auction to benefit OUR home through Home Works of America AND selling Toto's Treats (homemade doggie cookies) to benefit the Animal Mission of the Midlands. The silent auction concludes at the end of July so we'll be adding items as we go. Toto's Treats are included on the auction as a BID NOW item so you can go ahead and place your order! I can’t thank you enough for giving the kids this wonderful opportunity to grow in faith and character as young adults.” We love these kind words that reflect a huge piece of our mission; empowering youth to serve! 🔨Last week was the Fayetteville repair effort - a week Home Works supports that is coordinated by longtime volunteer Vince Mescall. (And our only session that takes place in North Carolina!) We thank all of those who took part in this meaningful effort of compassionate construction.

Founded in 1996, Home Works is a home repair nonprofit ministry serving the citizens of South Carolina as well as special sessions in North Carolina, Georgia and Peru. Home Works has provided home repair services to vulnerable homeowners with a model that includes mentoring and discipling students in the process. More than 45,000 student and adult volunteers have provided hope and free home repairs to over 2,700 homeowners across the Southeast.

Home Works provides a number of services: repairing the homes of low-income and elderly residents, intentionally mentoring students, and consciously protecting the environment through energy-efficiency weatherization in partnership with utility providers. A typical homeowner served by Home Works is widowed and living off $12,000 (Social Security, pension) annually. Entering into this person’s isolated world, Home Works brings middle school, high school, or college youth and adult volunteers to provide repairs.

Projects include replacing roofs, constructing wheelchair ramps, gutting and replacing bathrooms, repairing ceilings, painting interior/exterior walls, and completing general home repairs.

Visit www.HomeWorksofAmerica.org to sign up for an upcoming one-day or summer session or to donate to our mission.

Mission statement.

Our Mission is to show God's love for all through service to others and to assist others in their faith journey. Home Works' activities focus on providing home repairs to homeowners in need, assisting youth in their development and empowering communities to meet the needs of its members.

Description

Home Works' activities will focus on providing home repairs to homeowners in need, assisting youth in their development and empowering communities to meet the needs of its members.

Home Works began in 1996 repairing homes of the elderly and disadvantaged with the targeted volunteer being a youth led by an adult mentor. The repair sessions are for safety and structure and last between one-day to one-week in length. We serve cities in GA, NC, SC and Zorritos, Peru. Homeowners must own their home in an area we serve and only have passive sources of income such as Social Security, Pension and Disability. Repairs range from building a wheelchair ramp, installing grab bars, repairing a leaking roof, painting, to plumbing and electric work. These repairs allow the homeowner to remain in their home as they age if they so desire and most importantly they are conveyed hope.

Since 1996, over 1,200 homes have been repaired by over 14,000 volunteers. Over 98% of every dollar received is spent on program expenses. As a result, Home Works has received the South Carolina Secretary of State's Angel Award.

Home Works of America to hire Joe Huggins as next Executive Director

homeworks columbia sc

The Board of Directors of Home Works of America (HWoA) announced the hire of Joe Huggins to serve as the organization’s next Executive Director.  Huggins will lead a growing team of 7 full time employees who undergird the efforts of thousands of youth and adult volunteers who annually repair the homes of hundreds of low-income homeowners in SC-NC-GA, as well as in Peru and Haiti.

Building on the foundation of twenty years of compassionate construction, Home Works of America has seen rapid evolution in recent years.  Beyond annually providing safety and sanitation repairs for more than 120 elderly/disabled homeowners, in October 2015 HWoA began conducting expansive flood repairs for Midlands-area homes, as well as repairing coastal homes damaged by Hurricanes Matthew (2016).  Additionally, HWoA has enhanced its risk-management protocol to ensure safety on all sites for youth volunteers, begun a service-learning program for at-risk youth, and continued its pilot program with the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina to provide weatherization for qualifying rural low-income elderly homeowners.

Jim Powell, who has served as the organization’s Executive Director since December 2013, will transition to the role of Director of Development.   “It is a special privilege to have led Home Works of America through a season of growth to the necessary point of dividing the operational-performance and fund-development responsibilities into multiple positions, both previously on the full plate of the Executive Director.  I am thrilled to now serve under the capable leadership of Joe, who will bring the critical skills needed at this stage of the organization’s maturation,” said Powell.   “Joe will bring immediate impact to our committed volunteers and competent staff.  He is well equipped to enable us to conduct more home repairs in more communities, bringing synthesis and guidance with his experience in construction management – all with a spirit of joy and compassion.”

Joe Huggins has over 10 years of corporate project management experience as well as 8 years of military service in the United States Navy. He will be responsible for the overall mission and performance of HWoA.   Huggins holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of South Carolina and holds many certifications including Professional Engineer, Certified Construction Manager, CPESCI and South Carolina OSF Inspector. Upon separation from the Navy, he served as the Deputy Resident Officer in Charge of Construction at the Charleston Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Station.  Prior to serving at Home Works of America, Huggins previously served with Southern Management Group and LCK in Columbia, South Carolina.  Huggins is married and has two children, and is a member of First Baptist Church in Columbia SC.

About Home Works of America

Home Works of America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1996.  Our mission is to show God’s love through service to others, by repairing the homes of homeowners in need, assisting youth in their development, and empowering communities to meet the needs of their own members.  Since 1996, more than 40,000 youth and adult volunteers have helped repair 2,600 homes across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.  At every Home Works project, we work to create a context in which youth and adult volunteers intersect poverty-stricken homeowners in a context of mutual transformation.

COLUMBIA — The two-time WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces will play a preseason game in Colonial Life Arena on Saturday against Team Puerto Rico. Game time is 1 p.m.

Led by former South Carolina women's basketball star forward A'ja Wilson , the Aces will close their preseason in the home arena of the 2024 NCAA champions .

From Wilson to coach Becky Hammon and guard Kelsey Plum, here's five things to know about the Aces before Saturday's game.

Aces forward A'ja Wilson returns home

Wilson grew up in Columbia and is South Carolina women's basketball most decorated player.

Wilson was on the team that won the program's first NCAA title in 2017 and was named MVP of the tournament that year. In her senior season, she was selected the consensus National Player of the Year, All-America First Team, SEC Player of the Year and SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year.

Wilson holds the program's career records in points (2,389), blocked shots (363), free throws made (597) and free throws attempted (835).

In 2018, she was the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft. Her success continued at the professional level with the Aces.

Wilson has won two WNBA championships with the Aces and was named finals MVP in 2023. Wilson is a two-time league MVP (2020, 2022), two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and a five time WNBA All-Star.

Aces coach Becky Hammon transforming the WNBA

After spending time coaching in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs, where she became the first full-time female assistant in the league, Hammon took over as coach of the Aces in 2021. Hammon and the Aces won back-to-back WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023.

She was named Coach of the Year in 2022. In her first two seasons, she had a 60-16 (.789) record in the regular season and lost only three playoff games in two years.

Hammon played 16 seasons in the WNBA and was a six-time All-Star. In 2016, had her jersey was retired by the San Antonio Stars (now the Aces). She also played for the New York Liberty.

Aces point guard Kelsey Plum's work with WNBA rookies

Plum, 29, has dominated the college level and WNBA for nearly a decade and is now working with many young players ahead of the WNBA season. Plum began her " Dawg's Class" in partnership with Under Armor in 2023. Gamecocks guard Raven Johnson was part of the first class in 2023 and again in 2024 along with South Carolina sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley.

Becky Hammon and Dawn Staley say 'nobody wants to play us'

After revealing that the Gamecocks' 2024 season will start in Las Vegas, coach Dawn Staley said that its been difficult forming a schedule because nobody wants to play South Carolina. To Aces reporters, Hammon said something similar.

“We couldn’t get anyone to play us,” Hammon said.

The Aces won the past two WNBA championships, and Staley won her second title in three years with the Gamecocks in April.
