Since completing my Bachelors degree in Psychology, I have been determined to further develop my knowledge of human behaviour and motivation, and to find an application for my skills that would have a tangible, positive effect on the lives of those around me. I was excited to discover your Forensic Psychology MSc, as I believe it will equip me with the skills necessary to make a real impact within the criminal justice system.

My interest in crime and punishment was ignited when I participated in a prison listener scheme run by the Samaritans during my final year of university. I took hundreds of calls from prison inmates and staff who were struggling to cope and developed gained a concerning insight into the often-overlooked psychological distress experienced by so many within the prison system.

I also volunteered with the UK government’s Independent Monitoring Board, which involved assessing day-to-day living standards at my local prison and speaking with prisoners and staff to deeper understand their experiences. I greatly appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the Board’s monthly reports, which are used to inform local and national government policy.

In my final year at university, I completed a module in Criminal Psychology, which allowed me to appreciate the how complex the causes and consequences of criminal behaviour are. An aspect of the module that particularly interested (and frustrated) me was learning about the frequency of re-offending, and the shortcomings within rehabilitative services that often lead to it.

My voluntary experience within the prison system, combined with my understanding of Psychology have convinced me that a career as a Forensic Psychologist would be the most impactful way to apply my experience, passion, and knowledge. I am particularly interested in working with prisoners at risk of re-offending and was drawn to the module on this course focusing on rehabilitation and risk assessment, as well the option to gain practical experience within parole services.

It is my strong belief that though a crucial moral shift away from punishment and towards prevention and rehabilitation has been taking place for some time, it has not yet gone far enough. I believe that the field of Forensic Psychology places a crucial role in facilitating this societal change. In the future, I hope to apply my new-found expertise to helping break that cycle of crime, punishment and re-offending that is the cause of so much avoidable suffering.

Forensic Science Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

I have always been interested in science-based subjects and how they can be put to practical use in our daily lives. I also have a strong interest in crime related television programmes and real life crime cases. It is for this reason that I wish to undertake the formal study of Forensic Science.

One of the areas that I am most interested in is how genetic fingerprinting is used to identify suspects in criminal cases. I look forward to gaining further knowledge in this area and getting the chance to develop my laboratory skills and being part of a team working to solve a crime.

Not only am I interested in the biological aspect of crime solving but I am also fascinated by the workings of the human mind and what drives people to commit crimes. With this in mind I studied Psychology and Sociology at college so that I could better understand the criminal psyche.

During my time at school I held a number of responsible roles including being Head Girl, Chair of the Young Enterprise scheme, and Leader of the Student Parliament. As well as teaching me to communicate effectively I also developed teamwork skills, problem solving abilities, and learnt to use my initiative when faced with a new challenge.

Outside of school I volunteer for my local hospital radio station which involves hosting an evening radio show, taking phone calls from listeners, and collecting song requests from hospital patients.

I also enjoy reading factual books around the subject of Forensic Science and criminal psychology including ‘Fundamentals of Forensic Science’ by Academic Press and Dennis Howitt’s ‘Forensic and Criminal Psychology’.

I hope that by studying Forensic Science to the highest level will enable me to achieve the qualifications and skills I need to gain an entry level role as a laboratory assistant.

After this I hope to work my way up the career ladder and be part of a team solving crimes and helping to bring criminals to justice. I am also considering the possibility of undertaking a MSc after completing my undergraduate degree.

For applicants who do not meet this requirement, a Level 3 qualification such as A-Levels, BTEC, or Access to Higher Education Diploma may be accepted.

In addition, applicants must have a minimum of two A-Levels at grade C or above in Science or Maths-related subjects. This can include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Maths, or Computing.

Finally, applicants must have a minimum of 120 UCAS points, which is equivalent to a grade B in two A-Levels.

These requirements are similar to those of other university courses in Forensic Science in the UK, although some universities may have slightly different requirements.

UK Earnings Potential For Forensic Scientists

Personal Statement - Forensic Science

I have always loved the world of science, had an interest in solving puzzles and looking for details hidden in a bigger picture. Forensic science combines all of those interests. I also find it more interesting than other lab jobs as it contains parts of a mystery and riddle solving. My affinity for this field of science started when I was 12. On the TV I saw a programme about crimes and work of forensic scientists. It all seemed to be very exciting so I looked into it. After getting more into the subject, I realised that reality is far different from the TV fiction. However, it did not discourage me. I got interested in it even more after learning what this job really is about. I like static kind of work that requires analytic eye and good sight to spot details. Every time I have to work with a microscope or do any lab related procedure I am in my element. It fascinates me how much we can deduct from just a small sample. We can tell what kind of tissue, material or fibre it is, establish its origin or search for answers regarding who used it, touched it or whose DNA it is. It fascinates me how this field combines biology – blood analysis, finding and interpreting DNA found in hair or skin bits, with chemistry – toxicology, drug analyzation or examining various samples like fibre, a piece of material or glass. I am also thrilled about other aspects of this job, visiting crime scenes and presenting evidence in a courtroom. I have gained experience in laboratory work by attending extracurricular biology. During these classes I have been conducting experiments, making preparations to inspect under a microscope and doing the analysis of my findings. It was my first touch with doing an actual science work. It has resulted in developing my technical skills and gave me basics of laboratory techniques. I took part in laboratory classes at some of the top universities, which were University of Wroclaw and University of Life Sciences in Wroclaw, in Poland as well. Those included work in microbiology, genetics and biochemistry labs. This helped me to get in touch with more advanced lab equipment than at school and showed me how university classes look like. In summer of 2016, I have got my first job, which I continue to do part time. I work in a rehabilitation centre as a receptionist. Thanks to this job I have developed my organisation skills and learnt how to manage my time in an efficient way so I can always meet the deadline. One of my responsibilities is to schedule appointments for patients. Therefore I have a constant touch with people. It requires me to be communicative and has the problem-solving ability as people come there with various problems and questions. By having to work among other people, I have advanced my teamwork skills. Although I am aware that forensic science is a very competitive field nowadays, I am motivated enough to make the best out of time spent at your university to become a specialist in my field and be a wanted worker for many employers. I try to keep up with the newest science discoveries both in an area of biology and chemistry. I am doing that by reading online articles and a Polish popular science magazine called “Swiat wiedzy”. I consider myself a person who likes to stand up to a challenge. Studying is a big challenge itself, but studying in a foreign country is even a greater one. New experiences make me shiver with excitement, hence I cannot wait to start this one. To become a student will be the most significant in my life so far. I know it also will not be the easiest but my determination ensures I will not give up and make my dreams come true.

To address general skills necessary to students’ success as graduate students and forensic science researchers and/or professionals; 2. To instill proper practices for written, oral, and visual communication of ideas and reported results; 3. To understand the general concepts of time management, professional development, employability, and public outreach; 4. To understand the importance of scientific journal articles; to understand the intent and subject matter in each portion.

Since the late 19th century, the United Kingdom has been pivotal in both the development of forensic techniques and the setting of forensic science standards. Recent media attention has thrust forensics reluctantly into the spotlight to both positive and negative effect. This course aims to introduce the history and evolution of forensic science, significant cases, and the framework of international standards within forensic science. We will examine how forensic science is practiced in the UK, the strengths and weaknesses of the US and UK systems, and how the disciple is changing in each country. Finally, we will consider a number of related disciplines and issues, such as evidence admissibility, the CSI effect, human rights, and forensic regulation to gain a broader understanding of forensics' modern role and future development within criminal justice. The on-campus portion of this course will introduce students to key historical figures and milestones within forensic science. We will examine the similarities and differences between the Scottish, English and American legal systems as they pertain to forensic science and how these systems regulate and maintain standards within the profession. Finally we will look at popular media and its influence on the practice and perception of forensic sciences. Assessment will be through a combination of essays, oral presentations and classroom discussion of case studies. A final discussion document will be due following the international visit. The field study will take place in the United Kingdom, starting in Glasgow, Scotland and finishing in London, England. Other stops include Edinburgh, Leeds, Bradford, and Cambridge. Through site visits and guest speakers, students will gain insight into the forensic profession as it exists in the UK, UK laboratory practice, forensic standards and regulation in the UK and Europe, and the presentation of forensic evidence in British courts. As per the individual states of the USA, the UK has a diverse legal structure. An evaluation will be made between the Scottish and English systems and a comparison made between this and the State and Federal systems of the USA. The UK also provides the unique opportunity to visit sites key to the history of forensic science. Some of the trip highlights include visits to the Hunterian Museum, a Jack the Ripper tour, a visit to the pub at the heart of the infamous Worlds End Murders, trips to both Scottish and English courts in session, the Sherlock Holmes Museum, plus talks by CSIs, lab scientists, barristers, and forensic researchers. Each of these places and speakers will be introduced during the classroom component of the course with an emphasis on its relevance to the key aim and objectives. The length of the field trip will be two weeks with a minimum of 10 students and maximum of 20 students. This course is intended for MSFS students, pre-Forensic Science (3+2 and 4+2) chemistry and biology students and is also applicable for Criminal Justice, Anthropology, Sociology, and History majors.

This field combines my passion for science with my innate curiosity and desire to make a tangible difference in the world.

What excites me the most about forensic science is the opportunity to apply scientific principles to real-life scenarios. The subject encompasses a wide range of disciplines, from chemistry and biology to physics and psychology, all of which contribute to the comprehensive understanding necessary for effective crime scene investigation. The prospect of delving into the intricate details of DNA analysis, fingerprint identification, and ballistics analysis sparks a genuine excitement within me. I am eager to explore how these scientific techniques can be utilized to reveal the truth behind criminal activities and contribute to the administration of justice.

My academic journey thus far has prepared me well for the challenges of a Forensic Science degree. Throughout my secondary school years, I dedicated myself to the study of biology , chemistry , and physics, cultivating a strong foundation in the sciences. These subjects have not only nourished my analytical and problem-solving skills but have also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the scientific method. Furthermore, my current studies in criminology have provided me with a valuable understanding of the legal and ethical aspects of forensic science, reinforcing my desire to pursue a career in this field.

To complement my academic pursuits, I have actively sought out work experiences that would bolster my knowledge and practical skills in forensic science. Last summer, I secured an internship at a local crime laboratory, where I had the opportunity to observe and assist forensic scientists in their day-to-day operations. From analyzing DNA samples to examining trace evidence under the microscope, I witnessed firsthand the meticulousness and attention to detail required in this field. This experience not only solidified my interest in forensic science but also enhanced my ability to work effectively in a laboratory setting.

I was encouraged to be independent, but to ask for help when I needed it. After really enjoying my time there I was offered a permanent job and now work at Sharmans every weekend. This heightened my appreciation for what is required in the workplace, and gave me the perseverance needed for pursuing a bioscience-related course. This in turn fuelled my interest for genetics since many drugs are used to alleviate genetic disorders.

I decided to further my knowledge about genetics by reading 'Genome' by Matt Ridley. One chapter that caught my attention was about the genes involved in the development of fruit flies. Generally genes are distributed randomly on chromosomes, with no set arrangement. However, developmental genes are ordered in the specific sequence of the body of the fruit fly, to ensure that the correct parts form in the correct places. This in itself is fascinating because it builds upon our understanding of human development and promises a discovery of those same genes within the human genome in the near future. For me, some other intriguing genes include those that code for bioluminescent proteins.

Bioluminescent organisms caught my eye because of the unusual nature of their biochemistry, which inspired me to learn about the reactions behind them. I researched this and found my answer, which was related to the reaction of oxygen with luciferin in the presence of the luciferase enzyme. This reaction releases photons of light that cause bioluminescence in certain organisms, creating the captivating visual phenomena that we love to see. The urge to act on my curiosity was influenced by my experience of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which taught me how to keep moving forward in the things I do. Our group often had to compromise when faced with unexpected obstacles, but we always came up with effective solutions. As a result I have more patience and determination to pursue the topics that I enjoy, as I know that only hard work can bring the best results.

From DofE I also learnt how to work effectively as part of a team, which I frequently apply during lab-based activities. My role as a year leader, where I mentor a year 8 form group, and my running of Rubik's club have taught me how to plan sessions effectively so that the students benefit from them. I learnt to manage my workload more effectively due to the additional Russian homework that I was set, having attended Russian school until I was sixteen. This also helped me form more personal connections with others, as well as expanding my social circle. I tend to think of science as a jigsaw puzzle, complex but with a logical structure that can be determined through rationale and common sense. At the moment I do not have enough pieces of this jigsaw to satisfy my curiosity, but I know that a bioscience-related course will provide me with these pieces, and perhaps with them I will be able to create my own unique picture of the world.

Forensic psychology personal statement example (mature student).

What provokes another human being to commit a heinous crime? A question I've been asking myself since adolescence. My genuine thirst for both Psychology and Criminology began whilst studying for my A-level in History; through the topic of World War II and 'The Nazi Regime.'

I attempted to fathom why many native Germans became so absorbed into Hitler's sick ideology; a question I would later have the answer to. "So, why do you want to become a forensic psychologist?" I hear you ask. I am interested in studying both fields in the hope of gaining a deeper understanding of the criminal mind and exploring the adverse effects that crime has on our society.

My passion for Psychology and Criminology has enabled me to enrol on an Access to HE course in Social Sciences; allowing me to further advance my avid interest in reading, particularly on these captivating subjects. Aside from my love of crime fiction literature; Ian Rankin and Stephen King to name a few, I have developed a keen interest in real life studies. Zimbardo's controversial experiment provided me with in-depth answers as to why Germany fell victim to the hands of a destructive leader.

I was able to conclude that we, as individuals are more likely to obey orders from those in an authoritative position; this has stimulated my intellectual curiosity in fundamentalist cults like the 'FLDS,' 'The People's Church' and the current humanitarian crisis caused by 'ISIS' militants. In addition, I was awarded a distinction in my first graded assessment; a prime example of the time, energy and commitment I have invested into this course which highlights my sheer determination to be successful in both fields.

My journey has been an enlightening one. After leaving home at the tender age of eighteen; faced with the prospect of being forced into marriage I fled to London and was taken in by an extended family member who encouraged me to pursue further education. I was able to keep up to date with current affairs in addition to enhancing my independent reading skills; this courageous move gave me the fundamental tools to become the smart, independent and free-thinking individual I am today.

I constructively utilised my newfound freedom and made regular trips to the Old Bailey and the Royal Courts of Justice where I had the privilege of watching real-life cases take place in a courtroom. I was so enthralled by my surroundings and carefully analysed every minute detail of the defendant's body language when questioned; the energy was so intense every time. I often found myself in complete disbelief that the 'criminal', had the intent to commit the crime they had been accused of. The questions that race through my mind require answers; such answers only exist in this invigorating and challenging course.

I have acquired a wide range of transferable skills despite my tender years, developed through managerial positions in the civil service and health and beauty sectors. Also, my Eastern and Western roots have enabled me to speak Turkish fluently, in addition to conversational Arabic and German. Moreover, I have visited a number of countries including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Germany and America.

Being subjected to other cultures has enabled me to adapt to a variety of social situations and integrate with different groups. In my spare time, I thoroughly enjoy reading and cooking. I am also awaiting a volunteer placement within HMP Manchester where I will be working alongside offenders and will receive the necessary training to help them rehabilitate.

I believe learning has no limitations and I aim to take on this exciting opportunity to advance my knowledge about the criminal mind and the role that crime plays in our society. This course will further equip me with the essential experience I require to successfully integrate offenders back into society. As quoted by Aristotle: 'Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.'
