Further, we have a 200-word essay on World Environment Day for you:

World Environment Day is observed on 5th June annually. It was first celebrated in 1973 after the establishment of this day at the Stockholm Conference in 1972. This day is dedicated to environmental preservation and a sustainable future. On this day, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) raises awareness about , , deforestation, pollution, ozone layer depletion and other environmental issue. In addition, this global organization encourages organizations, communities, and individuals to work toward environmental preservation.
As students, we can participate in this global initiative by learning about biodiversity, pollution and its types, and climate change. To help us acquire this essential knowledge we have Environmental Science (EVS) in our curriculum. In addition, schools also organize tree-planting drives, clean-up campaigns, seminars, plays, lectures, and eco-friendly projects for students. After gaining the knowledge, we can help create a greener and cleaner world. Also, we can share our knowledge with our parents and friends and request them to use eco-friendly products.
Therefore, World Environment Day acts as a catalyst for a collective effort to address environmental issues. With this effort, this day acts as a platform to ensure the preservation of air, water, and soil for future generations.

Essay on World Environment Day: 300 words

Finally, let us view a 300-word essay on World Environment Day:

World Environment Day was instituted in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to mark the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. UNGA allocated 5th June to be celebrated as a day to generate awareness about environmental and ecological issues and inspire global action. The establishment of World Environment Day was a response to the surging need to address global environmental issues like global warming, ozone layer depletion, melting of glaciers, etc.

The first World Environment Day was observed on 5th June 1973. In this year, the theme was “Only One Earth”. Keeping up with this practice, each year a specific theme is attached to this day. The themes revolve around global attention to pressing environmental issues. In addition, the themes encourage national and international organizations, corporations, NGOs, and individuals to take meaningful action.

Thus, to observe World Environment Day we must organize and participate in plantation drives, awareness-raising programs, seminars, and clean-up campaigns. Also, we can pledge to use eco-friendly products. In addition, we can promote the use of green products by preparing skits and plays. In addition, we can minimize our carbon footprint and make sustainable use of resources by reading our Environmental Science (EVS) books. Besides, we can get EVS books from our libraries and learn techniques to work towards sustainability.

Therefore, acquiring knowledge through books and informative websites will help us challenge climate change, global warming, deforestation, extinction, pollution, etc. We can impart this knowledge to the people around us and ask them to rally for new and innovative ideas to reduce ecological problems. This network of an aware community will help us become global citizens.
Therefore, we can save our planet Earth by engaging in knowledge sharing on World Environment Day. Let us all come together to transform knowledge into action to create a sustainable future.

World Environment Day Essay for Students - 100, 200, 500 Words

100 Words Essay On World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a global event celebrated each year on 5 June. It's a day when people from all walks of life come together to celebrate our environment and take action to protect it. The day was first celebrated in 1972 after the United Nations General Assembly declared that it should be observed as an annual event. The goal of World Environment Day is to encourage people to take positive environmental action and to raise awareness about the issues our planet faces. In recent years, the focus of World Environment Day has shifted towards climate change and its effects on the environment.

200 Words Essay On World Environment Day

Every year, on June 5th, the world celebrates World Environment Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the state of our planet and the importance of taking care of our environment. It was first celebrated in 1974 and has since been observed by countries all over the world.

This year marks as the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). World Environment Day 2024 will focus on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan "Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration". As per the UNCCD, up to 40% of land is degraded because of which half of the world's population is directly affected.

Every World Environment Day is an opportunity to reflect on our role in creating a more sustainable future. We can all do something to make a difference, and the cumulative impact of many small actions can be significant. We should all work together to protect our planet and ensure that future generations can enjoy its beauty and resources just as much as we did.

500 Words Essay On World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a day that encourages us all to become activists and take positive steps in improving air quality, reducing waste, preserving ocean life, and protecting threatened species. It’s a reminder of our collective responsibility to care for Mother Earth and protect it for future generations.

How to Celebrate World Environment Day

There are plenty of ways to celebrate World Environment Day, and it really depends on what you're most interested in. If you want to do something hands-on, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer with local organisations or get involved in cleanup events. You could also plant a tree, or join in a march or rally to raise awareness for environmental concerns.

If you're more of a learn-and-do kind of person, you can find plenty of great educational resources online or at your local library. You can also attend workshops and panel discussions to learn more about how you can make a difference. Furthermore, you can always reduce your own environmental impact by making small changes in your everyday life.

Challenges Of Achieving Environmental Sustainability

As it stands, achieving environmental sustainability presents many challenges. One of the primary issues is that environmental degradation is caused not just by local, individual human behaviour, but is often a result of global industrial systems and large-scale capitalist businesses. This means that those who can have the biggest impact rarely feel the most immediate consequences, and it’s up to us to enforce better practices for the whole planet.

Another challenge is that even if we can get large entities on board with implementing sustainable practices, these changes may take years to fully implement and take effect. Additionally, individual human behaviour tends to be hard to change as we are creatures of habit; this makes it increasingly difficult to get people to really make an effort in changing how they interact with their environment. We can't just talk about making environmental changes—we have to implement them.

Lastly, there's the issue of resources not being balanced or distributed evenly—many areas are already running very low on resources such as water or food, and implementing sustainable practices in these kinds of regions will be even more difficult than in areas with resource availability. All these challenges mean that proper dedication needs to be given in order to make real progress towards a sustainable future for our planet.

How You Can Make Your Contribution

World Environment Day is a global movement that unites citizens from across the world to take action to protect and preserve our planet. This annual event, started in 1974 by the United Nations, helps us all understand how our actions can help in making our environment healthier and cleaner.

There are plenty of ways you can help make a difference on this special day. From organising or taking part in clean-up events, planting trees, or encouraging your community or family to reduce their energy use and conserve water—the possibilities are endless. You could also support environmental organisations by donating or volunteering with them. Taking those small steps will bring us closer to creating a healthier planet.

Let's beat plastic pollution for World Environment Day 2023

essay on world environment day 2023 in english

The theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 will focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.

The world is being inundated by plastic. More than  400 million tonnes of plastic  is produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated  19-23 million tonnes  end up in lakes, rivers and seas. Today, plastic clogs our landfills, leaches into the ocean and is combusted into toxic smoke, making it one of the gravest threats to the planet.

Not only that, what is less known is that microplastics find their way into the food we eat, the water we drink and even the air we breathe. Many plastic products contain hazardous additives, which may pose a threat to our health.

The good news is that we have science and solutions to tackle the problem –and a lot is already happening. What is needed most now is a surge of public and political pressure to scale up and speed actions from governments, companies and other stakeholders to solve this crisis. This underscores the importance of this World Environment Day mobilising action from every corner of the world.

Individual and community actions underpin the systemic change required to transition to a less plastic-dependent economy, meaning everyone, you included, can play a role!

The World Environment Day essay talks about how we must stop exploiting the environment and instead take effective measures to preserve the natural environment and resources. With the increasing concern of global warming that harms the environment, we must do everything in our capability to save the environment. World Environment Day is an apt day to evaluate our actions on the environment and plan steps to safeguard our environment.

Ways of Celebrating World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated for creating awareness among people about the issues that we face due to environmental degradation. So, environment enthusiasts and people come together to form campaigns. Each year, we celebrate World Environment Day with a particular theme, and one country will act as the global host. In the past years, we have covered themes like ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, ‘Beat Air Pollution’, ‘Time for Nature’, among many others. By creating powerful slogans specific to each year’s theme, people run the campaign all over the world.

Apart from this, we will see how institutions and offices celebrate the day in this World Environment Day essay in English. Students and teachers participate in small campaigns like planting trees or cleaning nearby locality/beaches. Through this, they will be contributing to saving the environment by understanding the importance of this day. While individual effort plays a great role in protecting the environment, strict actions and policies must be implemented by the government to stop environmental pollution. Thus, World Environment Day emphasises making our environment more beautiful and greener by spreading awareness.

Designation of this Day

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics, with the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the  Conference on the Human Environment , or the Stockholm Conference. Later that year, on 15 December, the General Assembly adopted a resolution ( A/RES/2994 (XXVII) ) designating June 5 as World Environment Day and urging "Governments and the organizations in the United Nations system to undertake on that day every year world-wide activities reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment, with a view to deepening environmental awareness."

World Environment Day 2023: Theme

The theme for World Environment Day 2023 is “Beat Plastic Pollution," shared with the social media hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution. Plastic pollution is growing beyond human control. Urgent action is needed to contain and replace them with environment-friendly materials. World Environment Day 2023 is being hosted by the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, also known as Ivory Coast, in West Africa. The Netherlands will be its partner this year. Côte d’Ivoire has already banned plastic bags.

As per the United Nations (UN), over 400 million plastic is produced worldwide, annually. 50 percent of it is single-use plastic and only 10 percent gets recycled. These plastic wastes eventually enter rivers, lakes and oceans and endanger marine life. Plastic wastes and microplastics have even been found on Mount Everest as well.

Studies have revealed that microplastics or plastic debris have even entered our bloodstreams through inhalation, consumption of food and water contaminated with microplastics. The chemical additives in plastics can cause endocrine disruption, reproductive problems, diabetes, obesity, asthma, neurodevelopmental defects and even cancers. They accumulate over time in our organs, particularly our lungs, liver, kidneys and spleen.

World Environment Day 2023: History

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) organises World Environment Day annually. It was established by the UN at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. The first World Environment day was celebrated a year later. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the celebrations.

World Environment Day 2023: Significance

The significance of the day lies in its impact. On March 2, 2022, 175 UN member states signed a resolution adopted by the United Nations Environment Assembly to end plastic pollution. A legally binding agreement will be formulated by 2024.

A scuba diver surrounded by a large school of fish.

It is time to realize that, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change, we urgently need collective action to revitalize the ocean. That means finding a new balance in our relationship with the marine environment. UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Awaken New Depths

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.

With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.

“Awaken New Depths” is the theme for World Oceans Day 2024. The UN is joining forces with decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activists to showcase how our relationship with the ocean needs to urgently change since our efforts to date have only skimmed the surface. To motivate widespread momentum for the ocean, we need to awaken new depths.

Join us and celebrate the value of oceans

World Oceans Day reminds every one of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our Planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere.

The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans.

This year, the United Nations will host a hybrid celebration  of the annual event on Friday 7 June 2024, hosted in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York to be broadcast live. It will highlight the 2024 theme of " Awaken New Depths ".

Hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations, in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global, this year’s annual event will shed light on how we can work together to ensure the ocean’s health and well-being.

2020 has been referred to as a "Nature Super Year" and must be the year where we turn the tide on deforestation and forestry loss. Secretary-General's Message

Why do we mark International Days?

International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. We also mark other UN observances .

Republic of Azerbaijan to host World Environment Day 2026

Baku, 27 June 2024  – The Republic of Azerbaijan will host  World Environment Day  2026, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Republic of Azerbaijan announced today in the capital, Baku, during an official visit by the Executive Director of UNEP, Inger Andersen.

World Environment Day, which Baku will host on 5 June 2026, is the largest global platform for environmental engagement and action. Established by the UN General Assembly in 1972, the Day inspires and is celebrated by millions of people across the world, who participate in online and in-person activities and events around the world aimed at accelerating environmental progress for people and planet. With Azerbaijan as hosts, World Environment Day 2026 will focus on climate change.

“Like almost every corner of the Earth, Azerbaijan is facing devastating impacts of climate change and environmental degradation. To fend off these challenges, World Environment Day fills the world with millions of reasons for hope,” said Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan and COP29 President-Designate. Azerbaijan is set to host a landmark UN Climate Change Conference in November, almost double our renewable energy sources by 2030 , grow forests, and reach zero-waste through state-of the-art facilities. Hosting World Environment Day is a natural choice, grounded in our solidarity for a green world.”

Recent years have seen nations working closer than ever to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature loss and pollution and waste. The UN Climate Change Conference COP28  saw countries agree to new commitments on renewable energy, efficiency, and methane amongst others, as well as signal the end of the fossil fuel era. The UN Biodiversity Conference COP15 , in 2022, ended with the landmark Global Biodiversity Framework, which is now being implemented to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030, and the world adopted a historic treaty to protect life in the high seas.

“Governments, businesses, civil society and people across the world are calling for change – from ending the fossil fuel era, to restoring degraded nature, reducing pollution and demanding the right to a healthy environment,” said Ms. Andersen. “World Environment Day is the platform to bring global action together and I look forward to working with the Republic of Azerbaijan to drive progress on the climate crisis through World Environment Day 2026.”

By the end of this year, critical progress on climate finance is expected at COP29 , along with countermeasures on desertification at the Convention to Combat Desertification COP16 and three years of international negotiations are expected to culminate in a legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution.

Next year, World Environment Day will be hosted by the Republic of Korea with a focus on ending plastic pollution. World Environment Day 2024 was hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia   with a focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.
