Discussion of the environmental problems of the planet is one of the most pressing topics today. While some are looking for the cause of the issues globally, others reduce it to a person. The latter includes works from 2014 by Jensen and McKibben. Even though both authors address the same problems, their works highlight different causes of it.

Jensen argues in his writings that people should stop using shorter showers. These actions will not allow preserving nature since the actions of one person are not able to control the global waste of resources. Such problems require corresponding global solutions, which can only be achieved through the efforts of the entire society. However, since harmony in society is impossible without each person’s efforts, it is essential to direct these efforts towards truly significant socio-ecological actions.

In full measure, Jensen’s idea can be described as follows: each person is in a situation in which even if they undertake several actions, it will not make up for the total loss of resources. The author clearly reveals this thesis with an example: a person taking a shower is not responsible for the lack of water, since 90% of water is used by industry and agriculture, while only 10% is spent on domestic needs (Jensen). In other words, people are not even faced with a dilemma of choice. And a person got into such a situation through the fault of the whole society, and it is the society that needs to solve this problem.

Compared to Jensen, McKibben associates environmental issues with each individual. Even implicit actions, such as choosing another profession other than ecology, negatively affect the environment. However, both authors understand that humanity is wasting too many resources without replenishing them. Both writers agree that the problem requires attention, both from each person and society as a whole. Finally, both writers agree that each person is responsible for their actions concerning nature. Only further steps and approaches that lead to the same goal are different in the works.

Our lifestyle today is all about buying. Billboards and advertising across the country tells us what to buy to look good, to be better than our neighbors, to satisfy our every little wish. But living up to the Jones’, trying to look young and healthy, trying to be up to date in fashion; all require one to buy, spend, waste. The concept of ‘once use throw away’ has to be recognized as that which promotes waste. What you think you would need to know to write a strong paperand what you think you would like to know about the topic. I have to find out details about efforts being made across the world to recycle the huge amount of waste being created across the world particularly in the developed countries like the United States. Modern lifestyle supports millions of businesses so it will be impossible to just stop them and go back to the thrifty lifestyle of the past. One has to investigate how to reduce waste in the manufacturing, distribution and consumption in every segment of life.

Each and every individual has to realize that every bit of waste drains the planet’s resources. How do we go about it? The new generation has to be able to recognize that the previous generation was responsible for creating a huge amount of waste. They have to understand that a consumption economy does not bring peace and happiness. In fact all it causes is stress, envy, dissatisfaction and therefore unhappiness. What question do you think you would like to answer through your research (in other words, what question would you like your thesis to answer? How should we scale down our wants? How do we teach ourselves to be happy with only that which meets our basic needs? How do we protect and take care for what we already have so that they do not have to be replaced? How do we start taking more pride in what we achieve rather than in what we own? How do we minimize waste, stop global warming and prevent the ultimate destruction of Planet Earth? Educated human beings despite being conscious about the necessity of saving resources for future use, recklessly use them to satisfy their present demands. Millions of tonnes of food grains are being wasted in the godowns. India ranks 103rd position in the Global Hunger Index despite being the largest producer of food grains. The Indian government bought 62.3 million tonnes of rice and wheat out of which 3,116 tonnes of grains were wasted and this has taken place between 2015-2016. Similarly, there has been no improvement in this regard and thus 75.17 million tonnes of food grain were wasted in 2019-2020. Thus India accounts for 37 per cent of the food insecurity issue, despite being the largest producer of wheat, rice and vegetables.

Countries such as Eritrea, South Sudan, and Guinea are a few among the many that also suffer from poverty.   In addition, there are many people who waste plenty of money to satiate their inner desires, for example, wasting money to get inebriated or enjoying being a part of gambling.

The average person unknowingly wastes almost 30 gallons of water every day. There are various ways in which the water gets wasted, such as excessive watering of loans, faucets dripping, high-efficiency toilets and low-flow showerheads. Regardless of the future scenarios, water is being wasted recklessly. By 2050, two-thirds of the world’s population will be facing at least one month of water shortage.

Presently, it is estimated that 80 per cent of non-renewable resources are wasted mainly in the industrialised world. Furthermore, unnecessary consumption also takes place notwithstanding the void it is going to take place in the future. For instance, India still depends on the use of non-renewable sources of energy with the demand for coal increasing significantly every year. Unfortunately, the Indian governmnet is also indulged in spending money on space missions. Instead, it should have spent its money on creating employment opportunities and reducing the rate of poverty.

From the above discussion, it is evident that people around us are likely to face shortages of food, water, money and non-renewable resources as they have indulged themselves in careless processes. This implies that they are not aware of the essence of the proverb “waste not, want not”. And thus, in future, they will be subjected to food, water, money and non-renewable energy crises.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
