  • What is stress? Stress is what we feel in situations we find difficult, challenging or even frightening. When we feel we can’t cope with the situation.
  • What is good stress? Stress that makes you ready for action as it gives you adrenalin and energy. E.g. When you have to stand in front of the class and speak. It is for a short term and you can have sweaty palms and a dry mouthy or butterflies in your tummy.
  • What is bad stress? If the stress is more than you can cope with, it is unhealthy. You may become ill, unhappy and depressed. You are not able to do your task as well as you could. You will have headaches or will not be able to sleep.
  • What is a stressor? A stressor is anything, event or person that causes stress. It is the things that trigger stress

How to manage stress

  • Meditation is a one of the natural methods of relieving stress. Simple deep breathing exercises can assist tremendously in relieving stress. Meditation helps to calm the mind.
  • Exercise and eat healthy foods regularly. Eat healthy foods and exercise at least 3 times a week.
  • Avoid excess caffeine intake which can increase feelings of anxiety and agitation.
  • Don’t use illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
  • Learn relaxation exercises (abdominal breathing and muscle relaxation techniques).
  • Develop assertiveness training skills. For example, state feelings in polite, firm, and not overly aggressive or passive ways (“I feel angry when you yell at me” “Please stop yelling”). Rehearse and practice situations which cause stress. One example is taking a speech class, if talking in front of a class makes you anxious.
  • Learn practical and effective coping skills. For example, break a large task into smaller, more attainable tasks.
  • Decrease negative self talk. Challenge negative thoughts about yourself with alternative neutral or positive thoughts. “My life will never get better” can be transformed into “I may feel hopeless now, but my life will probably get better if I work at it and get some help.”
  • Learn to feel good about doing a competent job rather than demanding perfection from yourself and others.
  • Take a break from stressful situations. Activities like listening to music, talking to a friend, drawing, writing, or spending time with a pet can reduce stress.
  • Build a network of friends who help you cope in a positive way…
  • A stress journal can help you identify the regular stressors in your life and the way you deal with them. Each time you feel stressed; keep track of it in your journal. As you keep a daily log, you will begin to see patterns and common themes.

Why is it important to manage stress?

These are 2 stress hormones. Cortisol is the hormone produced by fear, results in anxiety. Adrenalin- is the hormone that prepares the body to react physically to a threat. If you fail to manage your stress your body can produce too much of the hormones for too long. The stress will damage your body and change to chronic diseases like high blood pressure.

Symptoms of stress

The signs of stress are physical symptoms. Feeling worried is a symptom of stress. Sweating or trembling hands are a sign of stress and worry. Other signs or symptoms includes diarrhea or an upset stomach, rapid heart beat, bleeding ulcers and sweating too much. Symptoms of stress can include headaches, stomach ache, feeling tense, unable to sleep, constant thirst and feelings of unease. These are all short term effects of stress. Long term effects of stress are: high blood ressure/headaches/ulcers/allergies etc.

Stress can be defined as any cognitive, emotional, or physical pressure that when built, affects an individual directly or indirectly by influencing his work, work-related, or personal life. At work, stress affects an individual’s performance, either negatively or positively. Negative, when stress provokes depressive or pessimistic stress patterns, whereas positive when stress enables an individual to face and accept challenges. There are various stressors responsible for inducing stress patterns in work and relationships environments. Environmental stressors such as noise, heat, speech, aircraft noise, traffic noise, office noise, etc. The three main types of stress, present in any environment are physical, emotional, and cognitive (psychological). Any of these stresses incur as a result of work overload, repetitive tasks that underestimate individual’s capability, and job mismatch. Problems of work overload are directly or indirectly associated with psychological or physical pressure. For instance, individuals who find themselves in jobs that are ill-suited to their skills, abilities, and training or that do not meet their needs and expectations are likely to experience stress.

Stress impacts human performance, either individually or in teams and depicts a unique relationship between the person and the environment that is judged by the person for his own well-being. This clearly indicates that at work, not all stress is negative. It is stress in teamwork that induces the motivation factor to accept all the challenges that in the longer run evaluates and appraises the individual. At work there are two types of stressors that influence individuals. Ambient or indirect stressors, that is associated as major factors to be a part of the environment or background where the individual works. Direct stressors or performance-related stressors are directly linked to task performance. Performance-related stressors can be minimized by successful task performance. Stress is positive when it is perceived by an individual, for achieving his goals. However, there are certain variables of stress, which are proposed to have a direct impact on the team’s interaction and coordination. Such teamwork stressors that trigger motivation and promote a sense of coordination among teams include workload, team size, team management, and timeliness to accomplish a task.

Stress when relating to performance has remained a critical issue for there are controversies between positive and negative influences of stress. Many believe that individual or team performance is susceptible to the effects of stress as there is a requirement for teams to maintain acceptable performance. This is done by interacting effectively with fellow team members, which also pressurizes the stressed member to maintain his or her own performance. Another critical issue about work stress is its influence on family members, which is usually negative.

Work-family conflict gives rise to a high magnitude of stress transmission, which emotionally affects family members. It would be better to say that work-related stress when remaining unmanaged, induce stress among family members and relationships in a pessimistic manner. Here comes stress in emotion management that works among various relations including family and friends.

Stress in education has enabled us to think towards stress-management training, which has provided us with a useful function to help individuals to recognize the symptoms of stress and to overcome any negativity related to the stress. There are various awareness activities and skills-training programs designed to cope up with stress-related issues. Such techniques have proven useful in helping individuals deal with stressors and accept realities inherent in the work environment.

HOW TO APPROACH YOUR LIFE ORIENTATION EXAMINATION

  • Section A and B of the question paper are compulsory and must be answered by all the candidates. These two sections demand clearly identified Life Orientation CAPS content, recalling knowledge-based, learned content, and moreover, require the ability to demonstrate understanding, interpretation, examination and application of knowledge to new situations . Ensure that you answer all the questions in these two sections. Do not leave any questions blank.
  • Underline the instructional verbs and key words/phrases in each question to determine what is required in the answer.
  • Marks for TWO to THREE-mark questions are awarded as follows: ONE mark for a statement/opinion, ONE mark for the motivation/reason, and ONE mark for the outcome/summary.
  • Section B is compulsory and consists of TWO 15-mark questions. It includes short open-ended, scenario-based, source-based and case study questions of which learners must display understanding of current, real life issues affecting the youth and society at large, and give possible solutions. All answers must be written in full sentences.
  • Section C consists of THREE 15-mark or FOUR 10-mark choice questions of which learners will be expected to answer TWO or THREE respectively . The total in Section C is 30 marks. Responses must be in the form of paragraphs / short essays and will entail solving problems, making decisions, giving advice, making recommendations, critically discussing/evaluating/ assessing an issue.

Stress life orientation.

Stress can be described as the physical, mental, or emotional strain that individuals feel in difficult, challenging, and overwhelming situations. It occurs when the demands placed on us exceed our ability to cope. This triggers a series of physiological and psychological reactions that help us deal with the situation.

Positive Stress: Positive stress, also known as acute stress, can provide the adrenaline and motivation needed to take action when facing challenges. This type of stress is typically short-term and manageable.

For example, giving a speech before a class can evoke positive stress. The heightened sense of alertness and excitement you feel beforehand can enhance your performance and engagement, leading to a successful presentation.

Negative Stress: Negative stress, also known as chronic stress, can have detrimental effects on our health and well-being. When stress exceeds our coping abilities, it can result in sickness, unhappiness, and depression. This type of stress can manifest as physical symptoms such as headaches and insomnia, and it can impair our cognitive function and task performance.

For example, balancing multiple work deadlines, overwhelming family responsibilities, and financial pressures can lead to chronic stress, where individuals may experience persistent anxiety, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, thus negatively impacting their overall quality of life.

What is a stressor?

A stressor is anything that causes stress in an individual. This could be an event or circumstance that triggers a stress response in our bodies and minds, resulting in physical, emotional, and psychological reactions.

Short term symptoms

1, Faster breathing and increased heart rate:

Stress triggers the “fight or flight” response in the body, which prepares it for potential danger. This response leads to an increased heart rate and rapid breathing.

2, Dry mouth:

When stress levels rise, the body’s response triggers a decrease in saliva production, resulting in the uncomfortable sensation of dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. This reduction in saliva not only affects oral moisture but also compromises vital functions such as swallowing and digestion.

3, Sweaty palms:

When stress triggers the sympathetic nervous system, it induces sweating, a phenomenon often manifested as sweaty palms. This physiological response is part of the body’s innate reaction to perceived threats or challenges, preparing it for action. Sweaty palms can be particularly bothersome, affecting one’s ability to grip objects securely and leading to feelings of discomfort or embarrassment.

4, Tension in the neck:

Stress can lead to muscle tension and tightness, especially in the neck and shoulders. This physical manifestation often occurs when the body encounters prolonged periods of anxiety and tension, resulting in neck discomfort and stiffness.

5, Butterflies in the stomach: Stress can stimulate the release of adrenaline and other stress hormones, leading to sensations like butterflies or knots in the stomach.

1, High blood pressure (hypertension):

Chronic stress has been identified as a significant contributor to the development of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, a condition associated with an increased risk of heart disease and various other health complications.

The prolonged activation of the body’s stress response mechanisms can lead to persistent elevation of blood pressure levels over time.

This heightened blood pressure places additional strain on the cardiovascular system, potentially leading to damage to blood vessels, the heart, and other organs.

2, Headaches:

Stress has the potential to act as a trigger for various types of headaches, including tension headaches and migraines, which affect individuals differently. Tension headaches typically result from muscle tension in the head, neck, and shoulders, while migraines are characterized by intense throbbing pain, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.

While stress itself doesn’t directly cause ulcers, it can significantly worsen symptoms for those who already have them. Stress can increase stomach acid production and alter digestive patterns, exacerbating the discomfort associated with ulcers. Additionally, stress may weaken the body’s ability to heal existing ulcers, prolonging their duration and increasing the risk of complications.

4, Allergies:

Stress profoundly influences the immune system, potentially compromising its ability to defend the body against allergens. As a result, individuals experiencing high levels of stress may find themselves more susceptible to allergic reactions or experience heightened symptoms from existing allergies.

5, Insomnia:

Chronic stress disrupts sleep patterns by triggering racing thoughts and releasing hormones like cortisol, disrupting the sleep-wake cycle. This disruption leads to difficulty falling, staying, or experiencing restorative sleep, perpetuating a cycle of stress and sleeplessness.

6, Digestive issues:

Stress redirects bodily resources away from digestion, causing indigestion, bloating, diarrhoea, or constipation as immediate survival needs take precedence. Moreover, stress hormones like cortisol increase stomach acid production, exacerbating conditions like acid reflux or irritable bowel syndrome and disrupting the gut’s bacterial balance.

7, Depression and anxiety:

Prolonged stress floods the brain with cortisol and adrenaline, altering brain chemistry and neurotransmitter levels. This disruption leads to mood dysregulation, contributing to feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and anxiety. This weakens one’s resilience and coping mechanisms, thus heightening vulnerability to mental health disorders.

The 1D Geomechanical Models (1DGM) were done for four vertical boreholes in the Early Paleozoic shale sequences of the Baltic Basin in Poland. The models assumed an elastic rock behaviour with anisotropy in VTI symmetry. The far-field horizontal stresses were calculated as the sum of two components: the vertical stress derivative acting on the horizontally constrained rock column and the effect of elastic tectonic strains. Local stresses in the borehole wall were assumed to induce breakouts (BBs) and drilling-induced tensile fractures (DITFs). Hydraulic fracturing tests additionally validated the stress modelling results.Micro-resistivity images from XRMI logging revealed irregular BBs, usually confined to individual layers, often non-symmetrical, and with a tendency to encompass the entire borehole wall. Despite their irregularity, statistical analysis of their orientation provides a good quality and stable stress orientation.The initial modelling results, balancing the cumulative length of the modelled (BBM) and observed (BBO), revealed a systematic misfit between BBm and BBo locations. A detailed comparison between the BBm and BBo intervals concluded that the artificial degradation of Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio is caused by the perturbation of the velocity of the acoustic wave from the dipole acoustic tool passing through the intervals with irregular BBs. This makes it impossible to model the BBs in the places where they are present. To deal with this, the initial stress models were recalculated to the final models in which the BBm were avoided in intervals where there were no BBO.The initial and final stress models differ significantly in terms of the tectonic strain values and the combined length of the BBm. Still, their stress profiles are similar due to the small contribution of tectonic strain to the far-field stresses. We concluded that irregular BBs developed due to small differential horizontal stresses, causing abrupt BB failure with rapidly growing angular width. The stress layering between lithostratigraphic units was obtained with a dominance of the normal faulting stress regime in the lower borehole sections and the reverse faulting present in the upper sections. The minor regional elastic tectonic strain value for the shale sequence was determined to be an order of magnitude lower than the strain in the crystalline basement, as determined from the satellite geodetic strain rate. We expect that this discrepancy could be explained by a higher rate of viscous relaxation in the shale sequence with > 60% of the clay mineral content. This suggests the need to implement the viscous relaxation into the 1DGM of sedimentary sequences.
