Editor’s Note: We know that many of you are looking for help writing travel experience essays for school or simply writing about a trip for your friends or family. To inspire you and help you write your next trip essay—whether it’s an essay about a trip with family or simply a way to remember your best trip ever (so far)—we enlisted the help of Professor Kathleen Boardman, whose decades of teaching have helped many college students learn the fine art of autobiography and life writing. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

Narrative Essay on How I spent my holiday

Narrative essay generator.

Holidays hold a special place in everyone’s life, offering a respite from the routine of daily tasks and providing an opportunity to explore, relax, and create unforgettable memories. This year, I decided to spend my holiday in a way that was both enriching and exhilarating. I ventured on a journey to a small coastal town, renowned for its pristine beaches, rich culture, and vibrant local life. This narrative essay unfolds the experiences, discoveries, and personal growth I encountered during my holiday.

The Journey Begins

My adventure commenced with the excitement of traveling to a place I had never visited before. The anticipation built up as I packed my bags, ensuring I had everything needed for a week of exploration. The journey to the coastal town was a scenic delight, with winding roads flanked by lush greenery and the occasional glimpse of the ocean’s horizon promising a serene escape.

Exploring the Coastal Town

Upon arrival, the beauty of the town exceeded my expectations. The air was filled with the salty breeze of the sea and the streets buzzed with the energy of daily life. My first day was spent wandering through the town, taking in the sights and sounds. I visited local markets, where I marveled at the craftsmanship of the artisans and indulged in the town’s culinary delights, tasting dishes that were a fusion of traditional recipes and the bounty of the sea.

The Heart of Nature

The following days were dedicated to exploring the natural wonders surrounding the town. I embarked on hikes through nearby trails, each revealing breathtaking views of the landscape. The highlight was a trek to a secluded beach, accessible only by a narrow path through the cliffs. The effort was rewarded with a serene beach, untouched by the hustle and bustle of tourist spots. Here, I spent hours swimming in the clear waters, reading under the shade of palm trees, and reflecting on the simple pleasures of life.

Cultural Immersion

My holiday was not just about relaxation but also about immersing myself in the local culture. I attended a traditional dance performance, where the rhythmic beats and expressive movements of the dancers told stories of the town’s history and folklore. I also participated in a cooking class, learning to prepare local dishes that combined fresh seafood with exotic spices, gaining not only culinary skills but also insights into the lifestyle and traditions of the people.

The Bond of Friendship

One of the most unexpected and rewarding aspects of my holiday was the friendships I formed. Whether it was conversations with local residents, sharing stories with fellow travelers, or the camaraderie with the host of my accommodation, these connections added depth to my experience. Through these interactions, I gained a richer understanding of the world from different perspectives, reminding me of the value of openness and the universal language of kindness.

Reflections and Realizations

As my holiday drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the journey. Beyond the relaxation and enjoyment, it was a period of personal growth and learning. I had stepped out of my comfort zone, challenged myself to try new things, and embraced the unfamiliar. This holiday taught me the importance of slowing down, appreciating the moment, and the joy of discovering new places and cultures.

My holiday in the coastal town was more than just a break from routine; it was a journey of discovery, connection, and personal growth. It reminded me of the beauty of our world, the diversity of its people, and the shared experiences that bind us. As I returned home, I brought back not only souvenirs and photographs but memories that will last a lifetime and a renewed sense of adventure, ready to explore what lies beyond the horizon.

Tips for Writing a "What I Did on Vacation" Essay

  • Writing Essays
  • Writing Research Papers
  • English Grammar
  • M.Ed., Education Administration, University of Georgia
  • B.A., History, Armstrong State University

Are you required to write an essay about your summer vacation or your holiday break? This can be a tough assignment to tackle at first glance. But if you think about it, there are lots of interesting things that happen on your vacation that others might enjoy reading about. The key to success is to zero in on the experiences, people, or situations that made your vacation unique.

Summer vacation can be busy or lazy, funny or serious. You may have traveled with your family, worked every day, fallen in love, or coped with a difficult situation. To start your essay, you'll need to choose a topic and tone.

Family Vacation Essay Topic Ideas

If you traveled with your family, you may have some great stories to tell. After all, every family is crazy in its own way. Want some proof? How many Hollywood films have themes about family holidays or trips? Those films are popular because they enable us to glimpse inside the crazy family lives of others. Alternatively, you may have a more serious story to tell.

Consider these funny topics:

  • Why I'll Never Go Back to (insert place name)
  • How (insert name) Drove Me Crazy in Five Days
  • Traveling to (insert city) Then and Now
  • The Hazards of Traveling With a (person or thing)
  • Why You Shouldn't Take a Dog to (insert place)
  • I Left (insert city) But My (lost item) Stayed
  • Why I Couldn't Sleep in (place name)

If your family vacation involved something more serious, think about one of these topics:

  • The Love I Left Behind in (insert place)
  • Saying Good-Bye to (insert person or place)
  • Exploring (place's) Secrets
  • An Emotional Trip

Summer Job Essay Topic Ideas

Not everyone gets to spend the summer having fun; some of us have to work for a living. If you spent your summer at a job, chances are you met a lot of interesting characters, dealt with complicated situations, or even saved the day once or twice. Here are some ideas for summer job topics:

  • The Boss's Day Off
  • The Customer From Hell
  • What I Learned from My Customers
  • Why I'll Never Go Into the ___ Business
  • Six Things I Learned on the Job

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

  • The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
  • The rising action (the beginning of your story)
  • The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
  • The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

Short Essay on My Adventurous Trip [100, 200, 400 Words] With PDF

Trips are a very essential part of our life. And if those trips have full of adventures, that bring more joy to us. In this lesson today, you will learn how to write short essays on an Adventurous trip .

Feature image of Short Essay on Adventurous Trip

Short Essay on My Adventurous Trip in 100 Words

Every trip is an adventure and gives us joy. Going out on vacation may not mean a trip. A trip with adventures is completely different. Sometimes the vacation trip also becomes adventurous. Lots of things happen that amaze us. Also in adventures, many dangers take place.

I remember such an adventure I had. It was a horseback ride in the mountains. I was very young when we visited Shimla. We went to the Rohtang Pass. It snowed heavily that day. There was snow all around. So we had to take horses. We climbed high up the mountain. It was so lovely to see nature. I loved it. I remember my horseback ride till now.

Short Essay on My Adventurous Trip in 200 Words

I still remember one thrilling adventurous trip I had. I got scared when it happened. But I also enjoyed it a lot. I was very young when I visited Shimla. I did not know that the adventure would happen. So I just went on a vacation. We had a wonderful train journey to Shimla. Reaching there, we decided to visit Rohtang Pass.

I was so excited! We took a car and went to the slopes. I looked out of the windows. The car was gradually rising to the top. The road was spiel, like a big snake. Soon we reached the hilltop. I jumped out. That day it snowed. So it was all white. I was so happy to see the scene. Then we took a horse to ride. That was the greatest adventure I ever had. It slowly walked up the mountain.

I looked at the sides and saw how deep it was. I felt scared. Suddenly I could not breathe anymore. I felt sick and almost fell off the horseback. My father immediately held me and we came down the slopes. I fainted due to no air. When I got well, the people served me hot soup. He said I was too little. So I easily caught a cold. I still remember how dangerous it was. But still, this adventure is a great memory.

Short Essay on My Adventurous Trip in 400 Words

Adventure and trip are closely connected to each other. It is really hard to avoid adventure from a trip. We often go on vacations. But these are only for fun. So a trip with adventure is different. Adventure makes us a different person. We become strong and brave in an adventure. It is very important to have it in our lives. An adventure is always exciting and amazing.

I was also lucky to have an adventure in my life. I was very little then and did not know about it.  It suddenly happened. We went to Shimla that year. Shimla is always a great place to have fun. And it was the best vacation of my life. My father got us the tickets and we packed our bags. We took the train and went straight from Kolkata to Shimla. I enjoyed the view outside. It was wonderful. When we reached there, I jumped in joy. After two days of reaching Manali, All of us decided to visit it.

We planned to go to Rohtang Pass first. We started our journey. A car was booked. We took it and went to Rohtang. The road was like a snake. It was the first adventure I had there. It went slowly to the hilltop. I felt the cool breeze and looked out. It was so pretty. When we reached the top, I jumped out. It snowed that day. I started playing with it.

But the biggest adventure came after this. We had to take horses to go to the hilltop. I have seen horses in books. But had never ridden them. I clapped my hands in joy. My father and I got onto one. It slowly started moving. I touched the soft mane of the horse and it neighed. Soon we were at the top of the mountain. I looked down and got scared. It was dark. Long waterfalls were falling from the top. I stared at it. Suddenly I could not breathe. I tried hard but failed.

I soon fainted and was about to fall off horseback. But my father immediately caught me and we came down. The people nearby helped me and I opened my eyes. I had turned blue for no air. The people gave me hot soup to drink and feel warm. Gradually I felt better. After this, we left for our hotels. That day I was scared, but today I feel it as my best adventure. I will never forget this wonderful trip.

January 12, 2022 by Prasanna

My Dream Vacation Essay: In our daily lives, we are often trapped in routine ways of doing things. Almost all of us want to take a break and spend a vacation at a place away from cities, preferably close to nature. It’s an ideal place away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and the stress that goes along with it. The ideas of the dream vacation can vary from one person to another as per their choice and perception of a perfect place for vacation.

Some dream about relaxing on a warm, sunny beach within soft ocean breezes. Some think of viewing snow-capped mountains while enjoying a trek and some may look for forests and wildlife. Such dreams about vacation trips are related to many aspects of our lives and experiences. Vacation dreams represent the desire to go on a trip to get a much-needed break from the daily routine.

Long Essay on My Dream Vacation

The place for my dream vacation

Everyone has a dream place to spend a vacation with family and friends. Many of them are fortunate enough to get the chance to fulfill their desire. In this regard, I also have a dream of spending time in a place to get a feel about the environment, people, and culture of that place. I love mountains, especially the Himalayas. I would like to spend my dream vacation at a place where I can experience the beauty of the Himalayas and breathe some fresh air free from pollution while traveling along the tracks amidst flora and fauna.

For me, an ideal place for vacation is Pelling situated in Sikkim, India. It is a popular place for its natural scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage. From enjoying the beauty of mountains, lakes, and waterfalls to exploring the secrets of historical ruins, there are plenty of attractions that make it an ideal place for vacation. When I am looking for places to relax and rejuvenate, Pelling comes at top of my priority list.

Nature at its best

Pelling is a beautiful town located in the hills of the west district of Sikkim. The main attraction of the place is the breathtaking sight of the Kanchenjunga and the other peaks of the Himalayas. Pelling is my favorite hill station with a charm of its own. It offers a perfect break from a fanatic work schedule and makes me relax within the ocean of beauty and calmness. Pelling is a natural splendor with its magnificence and beauty.

The place enchants me with its fresh biospheres, great waterfalls, and shimmering lakes. I prefer spending my vacation in Pelling during the winters. This time of the year is a great season to witness the beauty of Pelling as the place remains covered with fresh snowfall which gives a feel like being in paradise. I highly recommend Pelling as a perfect holiday destination to relax with short tours in nature and the countryside.

The place and people

The view of the Kanchenjunga waterfall amidst the thick woody surroundings creates a sheer beauty. During the stay, a must-visit is the scenic Khecheopalri Lake, which has a lush backdrop of forest and hills. The lake holds special significance as it was known to be a wish-fulfilling lake. At the outskirts of Pelling, there is Darap Village with inhabitants from Limboo tribes. This place offers an opportunity to get acquainted with the original Sikkimese culture and the simple lifestyle of people. A walk through the village in the lap of nature will surely freshen up the body and mind. Staying in homestays will give a chance to enjoy the hospitality of local people along with getting a taste of authentic cuisines. All these are supplemented by nature exploration, bird-watching, hiking, and enjoying a unique experience of the village life here.

The Ancient and modern structures

A visit to the Rabdentse Ruins is another experience by itself. Spread across the hilltop, the ruins of the palace are surrounded by thick deciduous forests. A short walk to the top will bring a panoramic view of the valley and the mighty Kanchenjunga range. To spend some time with me, I must visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, a peaceful sanctum providing the perfect atmosphere for meditation and solitude. Another thrilling experience is walking on Pelling Skywalk which is a long bridge with glass floors.

Taste of local cuisines and culture

My special interest in spending vacation is exploring the taste of local cuisine. I know that the local cuisine of Sikkim is influenced by Tibetan and Nepali cuisine. I really can’t wait to have a taste of unique dishes like Thukpa, Momo, Churpi, Sel Roti, Kinema, Gundruk, and other delicious delicacies. A vacation is not complete without purchasing local products and mementos. Sikkim is famous for a variety of handicrafts and locally produced items that are unique to the place. I will find time to visit the local markets of Pelling and pick up handmade gifts and souvenirs like woven bamboo articles, colorful woolen scarves, Tibetan ornaments, and accessories. I will also fill my bag with spices like black cardamom, enjoy a cup of tea, and eat walnuts before going back to my city bidding goodbye to Pelling.

Short Essay on My Dream Vacation

Vacation gives a break

A vacation is a much-needed break from daily routine activities and a busy schedule. All of us want to escape for at least a few days from this mundane routine life and enjoy some quality time with family and near ones, in a relaxed mood. A vacation trip to a place of interest gives a soulful satisfaction and refreshes our minds. Everyone has some idea about what his/her dream vacation should be like. In most cases, it necessarily is a trip to a place away from the city which is unaffected by the hazards of day-to-day life. The main focus is to make the mind free from stress and the burden of work commitment. A vacation is a time to relax and rejuvenate after a stressful work schedule.

Being with the nature

Some may think of their dream vacations in luxurious holiday destinations with top-class facilities but I would prefer to spend my vacation in a place with optimum amenities and natural surroundings. It may be a hill station, forest, or seaside location with a touch of serenity and beauty. My dream vacation would be in the hilly regions of the Himalayas where I can enjoy the weather and the places while being in the midst of nature. Essay 1: Essay about Holiday with My Family

This time, in the winters, our small family planned for a holiday in the hills of Darjeeling. This was a much-needed break for the members of this family to remain quite busy in their daily scheduled life. They remain occupied in the strictly disciplined life of either work or study. My little sister and I study in grades 8 and 4, respectively, my father is a deputy manager in his reputed company, and my mother is a working lady and also a housewife. So, you can guess how our life will be in the strict realms of schedule. Thus, this time, my father and I decided on a short trip to the hills.

We started our journey on the 1st of December, 2019. On the way, we played a variety of games. The view over the hills was quite pleasant to watch. When we were on the top of the summits, we looked down at our town, which seemed like a toy town; how small that was from the top!

We clicked pretty snaps of the places, clicked pictures of us, of the local residents there, after which we went to a famous restaurant to eat our afternoon meal. We had the most delightful dumplings and noodles, which were cooked and served to us when still on steam.

As dusk dawned on us, the jungles over the hills seemed to tell us another story of spirits and supernaturals. My sister and I were quite fantasized about this view. We preferred to keep our eyes shut till we reached our destination. It was half-past 8 when we reached the hotel where we would spend the night. The hotel staff was kind people who welcomed us with great warmth. We freshened up and went downstairs to watch their cultural program. The tribes danced to the music of one of their traditional songs, which was quite amazing for us to watch. After this, dinner was served. The dinner was quite rich and they served us in a sophisticated manner. After the tiring day, we decided to call it off and went to sleep.

The next day, we went hiking in the mountains. When we reached the peak of the mountains, it was a very delightful view. We decided to camp for the rest of the day there in the hills. The scenario and being on the lap of nature were quite peaceful and serene.

After the trip, we came down to our town and normalized our lives.

This trip had ushered a sense of great peace and calmness in my mind, which was to be instilled. The memories of the trip were to remain fresh in my mind like the fresh droplets on the leaves.

Essay 2: Essay on Holiday

Holidays have joyous feelings related to them. My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love this holiday because it comes in December, which is also my birth month. There are a lot of exciting things we do during Christmas. We start making preparations for Christmas early before the month starts.

This year, my friends and I made snowmen with snow outside our houses. My dad put up all the lights in the interior and exterior of the house. It was looking really bright and pretty. My mom made a lot of food, cakes, and snacks, and ate with our family. My cousins from the US came over to spend time with us.

Our whole group of family and friends ate and talked and laughed with each other, sitting cozily near the fireplace, with the Christmas tree towering over us. I had a lot of fun. It is one of my best experiences and I hope to feel it again.

Short Essay On My December Holiday

Travel plans.

As part of our holiday preparations, my family researched different destinations to visit over our school break. After much debate, we settled on a one-week road trip along the coast of California (Topic Sentence). For the first part of our journey, we packed up our suitcases and snacks and embarked on an eight-hour drive from our home in Northern California down to Los Angeles (Transition). Hitting the road for long periods of time can be tiring, so we listened to Christmas music and audiobooks to pass the time and keep our energy up. Taking breaks to stretch our legs at scenic overlooks also helped the drive feel shorter.

Arrival (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); in Los Angeles

Upon arriving in LA, our first stop was checking into our hotel for a few nights of exploring the city (Topic Sentence). We spent one afternoon at Disneyland, enjoying the festive decorations and riding our favorite attractions like the teacups (Example). On another day, we toured Hollywood Boulevard and snapped photos beside the handprints of famous movie stars at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Our hotel was located near the Santa Monica Pier, so one evening we strolled along the beachfront shops and played amusement park games for prizes (Example). Los Angeles was bustling with holiday cheer and offered the perfect mix of activities to start our winter getaway.

Christmas Eve in San Diego

After a few enjoyable days in Los Angeles, we packed up and continued on to San Diego for Christmas Eve (Transition). We checked into a cozy hotel downtown and walked nearby to see the iconic San Diego Zoo all lit up for the night (Topic Sentence). What really stood out was attending midnight mass at a historic Spanish church near our hotel. It was a beautiful service with traditional carols and readings about the nativity story that put me in the Christmas spirit (Example). For dinner, my family cooked up a feast of tamales, potatoes, and fruit salad in our mini kitchen before exchanging gifts by the fireplace (Example). Spending quality time together made it feel just like Christmas, even though we were on vacation in a new city.

Our December holiday trip up and down the California coast was full of wonderful new experiences and memories. I learned that holidays are about more than presents or fancy meals—they are a chance to appreciate your family through shared moments of laughter and bonding (Topic Sentence). The natural scenery, festive celebrations in cities, and time unplugged from technology refreshed my mind and spirit. Looking back, that one special week created lasting memories that I will cherish for many years to come. I am grateful that my parents planned such a meaningful getaway for our family during my winter school break.

I took a 30-hour train from New York to Miami, and the motion sickness and terrible sleep were too much for me

  • I recently spent 30 hours on an Amtrak train traveling from New York City to Miami in 2021.
  • I found the ride to be rough and bumpy, with far too much time spent in a cramped space.
  • But if you value the journey as much as the destination, you might enjoy the ride.

Insider Today

I've traveled on several overnight trains , but I'll never forget my first time.

As a travel reporter who doesn't particularly enjoy flying, I thought I'd try an alternative mode of transportation for a trip from NYC to Miami in 2021.

Even though the train ride was more expensive than a typical economy flight to Miami and took 10 times longer, I booked a private room with two beds and a toilet on an Amtrak sleeper train for $500.

But I didn't anticipate how poorly the constant motion and length of the trip would make me feel.

My journey began at Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station in NYC.

essay my holiday trip

Waiting at the train station felt a lot like waiting in an airport  but with less security. My train ticket got me into the waiting room, where I sat until it was time to board.

Once it was time to board, I learned that sleeper cars are at the back of the train.

essay my holiday trip

The sleeper cars are right behind the dining car.

Once on the train, I walked down the narrow corridor of three sleeper cars to find my room.

essay my holiday trip

The corridor was so narrow that you could only walk down it single file.

Called a Roomette, this tiny, private suite is the cheapest way to travel by Amtrak if you want a bed.

essay my holiday trip

A step up from sitting in coach, where you get a regular train seat, a roomette is a private space with a door and blinds to cover up the windows.

Inside, there are two seats across from each other, a table that folds out in between, and a bed above the seats that pulls down. The seats also pull out into a bed.

In some Roomettes (mine included), there's a side table that swings open to reveal a toilet. Above, there's a folding sink and mirror.

essay my holiday trip

With the seat down and the sink folded up, you'd never know there was a bathroom in the room.

With two seats to a Roomette and no privacy curtain around the toilet, I was grateful to be a solo traveler.

essay my holiday trip

There was no privacy for those traveling in pairs.

I recommend bringing Poo Pouri with you if you plan to take a similar trip.

essay my holiday trip

A decade ago, I may have had a bigger problem with the toilet situation next to my bed in the Roomette. But, thankfully, I had packed some Poo Pourri , a spray that goes in the toilet just before you poop to eliminate odors.

Due to availability when I booked my ticket, I had to switch to another Roomette that didn't have a toilet but still had a sink partway through my trip.

essay my holiday trip

There was a bathroom at the back of the sleeper car where I could use the toilet.

The room had storage features that reminded me of a tiny home, like a pullout table between the chairs.

essay my holiday trip

The table had two foldout leaves, too, for more space.

One thing that surprised me about the Roomette was the variety of lighting options, which seemed to be more than what you'd get in economy on a flight.

essay my holiday trip

In addition to the ceiling light, each seat had its own area light, reading light, and night light. I counted 11 light switches in my Roomette.

I was also surprised to be able to control the temperature inside my Roomette.

essay my holiday trip

My Roomette had a temperature dial and air conditioning vents, and I kept it cool in my room, around 66 degrees Fahrenheit.

When the train started moving, I noticed it was a bumpy ride, like a flight when the seat belt sign is on. I figured this was temporary, but I thought the whole ride was shaky.

essay my holiday trip

When I stood up to walk through the train cars, I felt like I was on an airplane during turbulence. It felt like this the whole journey, and I ended up feeling motion sickness for the majority of the trip.

Since my train ride felt bumpy, I tried not to leave my room too much. But come dinner time, I decided to head to the dining cart.

essay my holiday trip

Even though eating in my room was an option, I didn't want it to smell like food in my bunk all night.

Since I got a Roomette, my ticket came with a meal, and I thought it wasn't too bad.

essay my holiday trip

I had braised short ribs, mashed potatoes, and a hard roll. While I didn't love the meal as it came, I made a little sandwich out of the ingredients, which tasted better to me.

When it was time for bed, I chose to sleep on the top bunk to experience what it was like.

essay my holiday trip

The room's seats fold out into a bed on the bottom level, but I wanted to try sleeping up top.

The bed was suspended in the air, and there were blankets wrapped in plastic that I found surprisingly soft and comfortable.

I thought the bed was comfy enough, but throughout the day, the shaking was much worse on the top bunk than in the seats.

essay my holiday trip

As I nestled into a sleeping position, I listened to the choo choo of the train whistle and pretended I was on the Polar Express until I finally fell asleep.

I woke up a few times in the night feeling disoriented, and I had to remind myself where I was. There were also times when I was worried I might fall out of bed.

While I didn't sleep well, I enjoyed waking up to the sun rising over Georgia.

essay my holiday trip

Even though I didn't sleep well, I'm glad I went with the top bunk because of the views I had in the morning.

I woke up at around 8 a.m. with about 11 hours left on my journey.

I passed a lot of the time working.

I used my Nintendo Switch, watched movies I had previously downloaded, and did work to fill the time.

essay my holiday trip

While the train had internet, I found the connection to be unreliable. So I was glad I had downloaded movies, TV shows, and podcasts to my phone and iPad before my trip.

I was so grateful when I finally arrived in Miami and decided that long train journeys weren't for the faint of heart.

essay my holiday trip

Since 2021, I've gotten more comfortable on overnight trains and have learned to appreciate them.

In my opinion, taking a long train journey is a lot like taking a road trip — if you consider the ride a part of the vacation, then maybe it would be worth it for you.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to plan a holiday that won’t break the bank:

1. SET A REALISTIC BUDGET:

Before you start planning, determine how much you can afford to spend on your vacation. Consider all possible expenses including transportation, accommodation, meals, activities, and souvenirs. Setting a clear budget will guide your decisions throughout the planning process.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHTS DESTINATION:

Go to destinations that are known to be budget-friendly. Look for places where the cost of living is lower, or where you can find good deals on accommodation and activities. Consider alternative locations that are near popular tourist spots but less expensive.

A Juneteenth celebration held in Brooklyn, New York, on June 18, 2023

In June 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill designating Juneteenth —the longstanding commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States—as a federal holiday. Juneteenth quickly gained traction across the country, with 59 percent of American adults reporting that they knew “a lot” or “some” about the holiday in 2022, up from 37 percent in 2021, according to a Gallup poll .

Juneteenth derives its name from June 19, 1865, the day that U.S. General Gordon Granger informed the enslaved individuals of Galveston, Texas, that they were officially free . Issued two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, Granger’s decree marked the end of slavery in the rebellious Confederate states.

Celebrated by African Americans for generations through food and fellowship, Juneteenth embodies Black resilience, independence, and community. It is a day African Americans set aside to commemorate the end of slavery and the promise of freedom—expressed through music, food, and ceremony.

“Although there were enslavers who were aware of the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that it was actually enforced [by] the Union Army,” wrote Mary Elliott , curator of American slavery at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), in a 2021 blog post . “It took the creation of the Emancipation Proclamation, the end of the Civil War and the passage of the 13th Amendment to finally end slavery throughout the nation.”

To mark Juneteenth, NMAAHC is hosting a special Community Day on Saturday, June 15. The free, in-person event will feature crafts; a mixology workshop; live jazz performances; and informational sessions on the Buffalo Soldiers , all-Black regiments that served on the Western frontier after the Civil War. Participants must register online ahead of time. To cap the day’s celebration, the museum’s director, Kevin Young , will host a conversation with Bryant Terry , a James Beard Award-winning chef, activist and author. Tickets to the talk, which includes a plant-based meal curated by Terry, cost $40 and must be reserved online .

Making Juneteenth a federal holiday

The 2021 bill’s passage made Juneteenth the nation’s 12th federal holiday. The last time the government added a new holiday to its calendar was in 1983, when the third Monday of January was declared Martin Luther King Jr. Day .

Emancipation Day celebration

“Our federal holidays are purposely few in number and recognize the most important milestones,” Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, a Democrat from New York, told the Associated Press ’ Kevin Freking in 2021. “I cannot think of a more important milestone to commemorate than the end of slavery in the United States.”

The decision to recognize Juneteenth on a national level arrived just over a year after the police killing of George Floyd sparked global protests against systemic racism . This 2020 reckoning, coupled with the Covid-19 pandemic’s disproportionate toll on Black Americans and ongoing debates about the commemoration of the Confederacy , led to an uptick of interest in the holiday.

“Juneteenth has … had a rebirth in terms of people focusing on it, celebrating it, wanting to know what it is and wanting to know what it signifies and how it relates to this long arc of racial divide and progress, or not, in our country,” Brenda Elaine Stevenson , a historian at the University of California, Los Angeles, told the New York Times ’ Isabella Grullón Paz in 2021.

Whether Juneteenth’s designation as a federal holiday has helped bridge this divide is a matter of debate. Writing for the Daily Beast in 2023, Ernest Owens , a journalist who grew up in Houston, described the day as the Black “Fourth of July—a celebration which reminded me that the South still had something to say, and that Black people didn’t have to wait for the validation of our white peers to gather around our history.” In recent years, however, Owens argued that “this sacred holiday has … become mainstreamed into something that now feels whitewashed, co-opted and highly performative.”

Columnist Renée Graham echoed this sentiment in a 2023 essay for the Boston Globe , explaining:

While a lot of Black people appreciated the gesture of making Juneteenth a federal holiday, many of us also understood that this was all it was—a performative gesture after the police murder of George Floyd in 2020. … Gentrifying commemorations and making them generically about “unity” dilutes what our ancestors endured for nearly 250 years so that we could live and undermines the immense debt this nation owes to the truth before it can attain its elusive unity.

The history of Juneteenth

Juneteenth was initially celebrated mainly in Texas. Though the Emancipation Proclamation applied to the rebellious state, it wasn’t enforced until federal soldiers arrived in the region in June 1865. According to historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. , news of Granger’s order spread slowly to Texas’ 250,000 enslaved people. Some plantation owners withheld the news until after the harvest, while others forced the newly emancipated to continue working. Those who defied their enslavers by acting on the decree did so at their own peril and sometimes found themselves the targets of violence.

A Juneteenth celebration held in Richmond, Virginia, around 1905

As the Texas State Historical Association notes, the first Juneteenth celebrations doubled as political rallies used to educate Black Americans about their voting rights. These events soon blossomed into full-blown festivities featuring barbecues , rodeos, horseback riding and games. In some areas, Black communities whose celebrations were relegated to town and city outskirts raised funds to purchase their own tracts of land; these sites were commonly called Emancipation Parks.

Black Americans migrating westward in the mid-20th century brought Juneteenth celebrations with them, William Wiggins Jr. , author of Jubilation: African-American Celebrations in the Southeast , told Smithsonian magazine ’s Ashley Luthern in 2009.

“Where you had Black families moving to California from east Texas, and southwest Arkansas and Oklahoma, to work in the shipyards, or to work in the airplane factories, then Juneteenth started cropping up in those states,” Wiggins explained.

From the sacred ring shout rituals on plantations to antebellum freedom hymns to the unique beats and rhythms of jazz, R&B, and hip-hop — music has played a vital role in the march to freedom. #Juneteenth #APeoplesGroove #BlackMusicMonth pic.twitter.com/Il9Nn4dJMK — Smithsonian’s NMAAHC (@NMAAHC) June 21, 2023

In the 2021 NMAAHC blog post, curator Angela Tate pointed out that Juneteenth is far from the only holiday celebrating emancipation. Mississippi marks the end of slavery on May 8 , for instance, while Maryland holds its commemoration on November 1 . But the once-local holiday gained traction nationwide during the 1950s and 1960s, when civil rights activists celebrated it as “a way to address poverty and freedom and [hark] back to our past,” according to Wiggins.

Texas made Juneteenth a state holiday in 1979. By 2019, all but four states —Hawaii, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana— celebrated the day as either a holiday or an observance. South Dakota was the last holdout, with Governor Kristi Noem declaring the day a state holiday in 2022.

Speaking with the New York Times ’ Luke Broadwater in 2021, Senator Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts, a lead sponsor of the bill designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday, pointed out that the legislation arrived at a time of debate over how schools teach students about the nation’s checkered racial past . Since January 2021, 44 states have taken steps to restrict classroom discussions of critical race theory , racism and sexism, according to an Education Week analysis.

Juneteenth itself has factored into the ongoing controversy : Last year, a Gallup poll found that 61 percent of U.S. adults believe the holiday should be included in public school curricula, while 20 percent say it should not.

Recognizing Juneteenth on a federal level “acknowledges slavery as the original sin built into the United States Constitution,” Markey said. “We celebrate its eradication, but we can’t celebrate how deeply racism resulted in America’s policies and is still built into education, health care, housing and every other policy.”

June 19 (UPI) -- Juneteenth holiday events across the nation celebrate and memorialize June 19 in 1865, when 250,000 slaves in Texas were granted their freedom following the Civil War.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday issued a proclamation honoring the Juneteenth day of observance. Advertisement

"Today, we recognize that Juneteenth not only marks the end of America's original sin of slavery, but also the beginning of the work at the heart and soul of our nation -- making the promise of America real for every American," Biden said.

Juneteenth celebrates the final triumph of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves in the former Confederate states and the eventual ratification of the 13th Amendment that abolishes slavery everywhere in the United States and its territories. Advertisement

President Abraham Lincoln and more than 618,000 soldiers gave their lives during the struggle to abolish slavery.

Congress passed a resolution that Lincoln on Feb. 1, 1865, signed the 13th Amendment , which then went to states for ratification.

The 13th Amendment reads: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to its jurisdiction."

The White House hosted an early Juneteenth celebration on June 10th. The nation's capital is hosting several holiday activities on Wednesday and through the weekend.

The Juneteenth events include an exhibit of painter William H. Johnson's "Fighters of Freedom" series honoring Black activists and others, including Harriet Tubman , George Washington Carver and Marian Anderson. The free exhibit is located at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C.

The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art is hosting a "Five Murmurations" visual-essay exhibit by filmmaker and artist John Akomfrah. The exhibit commemorates much of the seminal events of 2020, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the death of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter unrest in works of art and film clips. Advertisement

Additional Juneteenth events in the nation's capital include those scheduled at Tudor Place, the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and The Phillips Collection.

Most of the Juneteenth events in Washington D.C. are free.

Some 1,400 miles away in Galveston, Texas, a 45th Annual Juneteenth Proclamation Reading was held late Wednesday morning at Ashton Villa. The event also honored former Texas State Rep. Al Edwards, who sponsored legislation that made Juneteenth Day a state holiday in 1979.

Galveston is notable because that is where federal Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and federal troops read the Emancipation Proclamation and effectively freed the state's 250,000 slaves on June 19, 1865.

Granger's actions were the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation and made former slaves in Texas aware that Lincoln officially freed them 2.5 years earlier.

Vice President Kamala Harris headlined a Juneteenth Block Party in Atlanta on Tuesday. A rodeo in nearby Marietta on Wednesday honored the legacy of Black ranchers, farmers, cowboys and cowgirls. Advertisement

Other events feature concerts, beauty pageants, parades and other community events to honor the official abolishment of slavery throughout the United States and its territories.

While countless Juneteenth events are scheduled Wednesday and through the weekend, previously scheduled celebrations on city properties in Akron, Ohio, are canceled .

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik on Friday announced the cancellations after eight Akron City Council members expressed their concerns about holding the events so soon after a recent mass shooting .

One or more unidentified shooters killed one and wounded 28 while shooting from an SUV into a crowd celebrating a birthday party at a private residence after midnight on June 2.

Labour's shadow minister Nick Thomas-Symonds is speaking to Sky News this morning.

He is talking about knife crime, as Sir Keir Starmer targets the issue in today's campaigning.

It is put to him that London - run by a Labour mayor since 2016 - is what people think of when knife crime is mentioned.

Mr Thomas-Symonds says it is "not an exclusively London problem" - and areas like Cleveland and Hertfordshire have seen instances more than double since 2015.

He says: "This is a nationwide problem that we absolutely need to, in my view, stand above the political point-scoring, and absolutely grip this problem."

Invoking a New Labour slogan, Mr Thomas-Symonds says "You have to be both tough, in terms of the sentences for knife crime".

He adds: "But you also have to be tough on the underlying causes as well."

You can read more about Labour's knife crime plans here:

So far, one member of Rishi Sunak's protection detail has been arrested over alleged misconduct - following claims bets were placed on the date of the election.

They are a member of the Metropolitan Police.

Sky News understands that more members of the force are being looked at as part of the betting probe.

Overnight, the Met has denied it leaked details of the betting investigation, following reporting in The Daily Telegraph.

A Met spokesperson said: "The allegations that the Met has leaked information are simply untrue.

"We continue to liaise with the Gambling Commission and are assessing information they have provided."

What is the scandal?

In short, there are allegations people who had inside knowledge of the election date may have placed bets before Rishi Sunak announced it.

So far, four people have been identified as potentially being involved, with a fifth unnamed person also allegedly implicated.

What is happening now?

The Gambling Commission is investigating - with Sky's chief political correspondent Jon Craig revealing on Sunday that many more people could be involved.

They have written to bookmakers asking for lists of people who placed bets on the election date.

It can then compare these against people who have links to politics and decide whether they need to take further action.

What are the Conservatives saying?

Rishi Sunak has insisted it is "proper" to wait for the commission to finish its investigation before action is taken - including suspensions.

He has confirmed an internal party probe is also taking place.

Who is calling for suspensions?

Unsurprisingly, many political opponents are calling for Mr Sunak to suspend those implicated - there are so many it is difficult to list.

But those within the party saying action should be taken are notable.

Sir Robert Buckland, a former justice secretary; Tobias Ellwood, a former defence minister; Steve Baker, a current Northern Ireland minister; and Baroness Ruth Davidson, a former leader of the Scottish Conservatives, have all called for the PM to suspend people.

Northern Ireland minister Steve Baker has joined the growing calls for Rishi Sunak to suspend those being investigated in the Conservative betting scandal.

Speaking to ITV last night, Mr Baker said putting a wager on when the vote would be called was "disreputable".

He said: "I would call them up and ask them, 'Did you do it?' And if they did it, then they are suspended.

"But the prime minister would have to answer why he hasn't done it, I haven't got inside information on why the prime minister hasn't done it."

Illegal migration minister Michael Tomlinson is asked about his brief - and whether he should be trusted to do the job when small boat crossings have hit record numbers on his watch.

Mr Tomlinson says there is evidence the Rwanda scheme is working as a deterrent - but caveats this seconds later by saying the "full effect of the deterrent" will not kick in until planes take off.

The scheme was first announced in April 2022 and no planes have departed.

On small boats, Mr Tomlinson says that illegal migration is down a third "year on year".

This is correct when comparing 2023 to 2022.

However, the number of people who have crossed the Channel this year is currently tracking above the levels seen in 2022.

A record number of people - close to 13,000 - crossed the Channel in the first six months of this year.

This is higher than the same point in both 2023 and 2022.

Illegal migration minister Michael Tomlinson is speaking to Sky News on behalf of the government this morning.

He first off is asked about the extradition of Julian Assange - but says it is breaking news, and he wants to wait for the "full facts" before he responds.

Sky presenter Matt Barbet asks the minister if he feels "the same about the gambling scandal as well that's engulfing the Conservatives right now".

The presenter adds: "Are you going to tell me that we have to wait for the full facts and the Gambling Commission's investigations?"

Mr Tomlinson says - channelling his "inner lawyer" - that it is "certainly the right thing to do" to wait for the watchdog to finish its probe.

Matt asks why it is the right thing to do when some involved have conceded they placed a bet.

"So why not be suspended?" he asks - saying that it is normal to suspend someone during an investigation.

Mr Tomlinson says there is a "process" - and the Gambling Commission is independent.

He adds that there is an internal party process in motion as well - and it is important it happens "swiftly" - and anyone found to have broken the rules or laws will be dealt with "severely".

But he does not explain why the prime minister cannot take the initiative and suspend the people under investigation.

By Jennifer Scott , political reporter

Reducing knife crime will be a "moral mission" for Labour if it wins the general election on 4 July, Sir Keir Starmer will say on Tuesday.

The party leader will outline his plan to halve knife crime over the next 10 years, including creating a new cross-government "coalition" to work on solutions - including families of victims and survivors of knife crime, along with tech companies and relevant organisations.

Sir Keir will also promise to chair an annual knife crime summit to "track progress" on the target, and appeal to all parties to work together on the issue.

"Knife crime is an issue above and beyond party politics," he will say. "For the parents grieving sons and daughters who never came home, action to end this scourge cannot wait.

"Far too often we hear the same stories from grieving families who have been subject to these brutal murders carried out by children.

"It is our duty as political leaders of all stripes to work together to end knife crime and keep our young people safe."

Figures from Labour showed knife-related offences had risen by 81% since 2015 across England and Wales.

The party's pledges for after the election include increasing the penalties for carrying a knife - including custody in the most serious cases, as well as extending the list of banned knives.

It's hard for politicians to cut through. It's even harder when you are leading the fourth largest party in parliament with only 11 MPs.

How do you insert yourself into a conversation that's happening largely between the Conservatives and Labour, with a sprinkling of Reform's Nigel Farage in the mix?

Well, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has done it two ways.

The first through endless silly stunts - be it repeatedly falling off a paddleboard on Lake Windermere or riding a giant waterslide in his swimming trunks in Somerset.

But the second, and far more profound, way to reach voters has been to open up about his own childhood, caring for his dying mother, and now, as a father himself, raising a disabled son.

The latest episode of the Electoral Dysfunction podcast is out, with Sky political editor Beth Rigby chatting to former Scottish Conservative leader Baroness Ruth Davidson, and ex-Labour adviser Baroness Ayesha Hazarika.

At one point, the discussion turns to the Conservative betting scandal.

A number of Conservative candidates and officials are being investigated over whether they bet on the timing of the election before Rishi Sunak announced it - but they have not been suspended from the party.

The Tories say they cannot take further public action due to the Gambling Commission's investigation.

But Baroness Davidson says Mr Sunak should ignore the watchdog.

She said: "The Gambling Commission are very, very clear about what you're not allowed to say when somebody's being investigated by the Gambling Commission.

"But I'm sorry, you're the prime minister of a G7 nation in the middle of an election campaign when you're fighting for your life... If the Gambling Commission want to shout at you for suspending somebody and saying that, just do it.

"That's what leadership is."

She added that she thought "nothing was going to be worse than leaving D-Day early" - but the betting allegations are "reinforcing already bad opinions".
