Tamil language , member of the Dravidian language family, spoken primarily in India . It is the official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry (Pondicherry). It is also an official language in Sri Lanka and Singapore and has significant numbers of speakers in Malaysia , Mauritius , Fiji , and South Africa . In 2004 Tamil was declared a classical language of India, meaning that it met three criteria: its origins are ancient; it has an independent tradition; and it possesses a considerable body of ancient literature. In the early 21st century more than 66 million people were Tamil speakers.

The earliest Tamil writing is attested in inscriptions and potsherds from the 5th century bce . Three periods have been distinguished through analyses of grammatical and lexical changes: Old Tamil (from about 450 bce to 700 ce ), Middle Tamil (700–1600), and Modern Tamil (from 1600). The Tamil writing system evolved from the Brahmi script. The shape of the letters changed enormously over time, eventually stabilizing when printing was introduced in the 16th century ce . The major addition to the alphabet was the incorporation of Grantha letters to write unassimilated Sanskrit words, although a few letters with irregular shapes were standardized during the modern period. A script known as Vatteluttu (“Round Script”) is also in common use.

Spoken Tamil has changed substantially over time, including changes in the phonological structure of words. This has created diglossia —a system in which there are distinct differences between colloquial forms of a language and those that are used in formal and written contexts . The major regional variation is between the form spoken in India and that spoken in Jaffna (Sri Lanka), capital of a former Tamil city-state, and its surrounds. Within Tamil Nadu there are phonological differences between the northern, western, and southern speech. Regional varieties of the language intersect with varieties that are based on social class or caste .

Like the other Dravidian languages, Tamil is characterized by a series of retroflex consonants (/ḍ/, /ṇ/, and /ṭ/) made by curling the tip of the tongue back to the roof of the mouth. Structurally, Tamil is a verb-final language that allows flexibility regarding the order of the subject and the object in a sentence. Adjectives and relative, adverbial, and infinitive clauses normally precede the term they modify, while inflections such as those for tense , number, person, and case are indicated with suffixes.

நம் மொழி தமிழ்!

திராவிட மொழிக் குடும்பத்தின் மூல மொழி தமிழ். திராவிடக் குடும்பத்தின் முதன்மையான மொழி, மூத்த மொழி, திராவிட மொழிகளின் தாய் மொழி - நம் மொழியாம் தமிழ்.

இந்த மொழிக் கூட்டத்தில் மொத்தம் 26 மொழிகள். அத்தனைக்கும் மூல மொழியாக நம் தாய் மொழியான தமிழ் இருப்பது பெருமைக்குரிய ஒன்று. இவை தவிர 35 சிறு மொழிக் கூட்டத்திற்கும் தமிழே மூல மொழியாக இருப்பது வியப்புக்குரியது.

இன்று தனிச் சிறப்புடன் கூடிய ஒரு மொழியாக திகழும் மலையாளம், 9வது நூற்றாண்டு வரை தமிழின் ஒரு 'டயலக்ட்' ஆகத்தான் இருந்து வந்தது -அதாவது மதுரைத் தமிழ், கொங்குத் தமிழ், நெல்லைத் தமிழ் போல. தமிழிலிலிருந்து நேரடியாக பிரிந்த ஒரு மொழிதான் மலையாளம்.

தமிழை மூன்று காலங்களாக ஆய்வாளர்கள் பிரிக்கின்றனர். கி.மு. 300க்கும், 700க்கும் இடைப்பட்ட காலம் பழந்தமிழ்க் காலம் என்றும், 700க்கும், 1600க்கும் இடைப்பட்ட காலத்தை இடைக்காலத் தமிழ் என்றும், 1600 முதல் இன்று வரையிலான காலத்தை நவீன தமிழ் காலம் என்றும் ஆய்வாளர்கள் வகைப்படுத்துகின்றனர்.

தமிழ் என்ற பெயர் எப்போது முதல் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது என்பதற்கு தெளிவான ஆதாரம் இல்லை. இருப்பினும் கி.மு. முதலாம் நூற்றாண்டில் தமிழ் என்ற பெயர் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டிருப்பதாக செய்திகள் உள்ளன.

செம்மொழித் தமிழ்...

உலகச் செம்மொழிகளில் ஒன்றாக தமிழ் திகழ்கிறது. செம்மொழி என்பது ஒரு அடையாளம் அல்ல, மாறாக அது ஒரு மொழியின் செம்மையை, சீரை, சிறப்பை, செழுமையை வெளிச்சம் போட்டுக் காட்ட உதவுகிறது.

மிகப் பாரம்பரியமான, பழமையான இலக்கியத்தைக் கொண்ட மொழியாக இருக்க வேண்டும். சுயம் இருக்க வேண்டும், வேறொரு பாரம்பரியத்தின் நிழல் அந்த மொழியின் மீது படிந்திருக்கக் கூடாது. அப்படிப்பட்ட மொழியே செம்மொழி என கூறுகிறார் மொழியியல் வல்லுநர் ஜார்ஜ் ஹார்ட்.

இன்று உலகளவில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மொழிக் கூட்டங்கள் இருந்தாலும் பேச்சளவிலும், எழுத்தளவிலும் உயிர்ப்புடன் இருப்பது சில நூறு மொழிகள் தான். அதிலும் பழமை வாய்ந்ததாக, பாரம்பரியம் வாய்ந்ததாக, சிறப்பு வாய்ந்ததாக, தங்களுக்கென்று சுயத்தைக் கொண்ட மொழிகள் வெகு சிலதான். அதில் ஒன்று நம் செம்மொழி தமிழ்.

இலக்கணத்திலும், இலக்கியத்திலும் சிறந்த மொழிகளுக்கே இந்த சிறப்பு கிடைக்கிறது. சுமேரிய மொழி, ஆதி எகிப்திய மொழி, ஆதி பாபிலோனிய மொழி, ஹீப்ரூ, சீன மொழி, கிரேக்கம், சமஸ்கிருதம், தமிழ், லத்தீன், மண்டாயிக், சிரியாக், ஆர்மீனியன், பெர்சியன் ஆகியவற்றை செம்மொழிகளாக உலகம் கண்டிருக்கிறது.

ஆனால் இந்த சிறிய மொழிக் கூட்டத்தில் இன்று உலக அளவில் வலுவான வரலாற்றுடன், மிக வீரியமான உயிர்ப்புடன் கூடிய ஒரே மொழியாக தமிழ் மட்டுமே திகழ்கிறது என்பது நிஜம், அது தமிழுக்குக் கிடைத்துள்ள மிகப் பெரிய பெருமை என்பதில் சந்தேகம் இல்லை.

தமிழ் தந்த தொல்காப்பியத்திற்கு ஈடு இணையே இல்லை என்பது பல்வேறு செம்மொழிகளை ஆய்வு செய்தவர்கள் அளித்துள்ள தீர்ப்பு.

செந்தமிழ் (செம்மொழியாகிய தமிழ்) எனுஞ்சொல் தமிழில் கிடைத்துள்ள மூலமுதல் நூலான, மூவாயிரம் ஆண்டுப் பழைய தொல்காப்பியத்திலேயே இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது.

தமிழ் எனும் சொல்லுக்குக் கிபி 10ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் எழுந்த பிங்கல நிகண்டு, 'இனிமையும் நீர்மையும் தமிழ் எனலாகும்' என்று பொருள் கூறுகிறது.

செந்தமிழ் என்பதற்குக் 'கலப்பற்ற தூயதமிழ்' என்று பொருள் தருகிறது தமிழ்ப் பேரகராதி.

செந்தமிழ் எனுஞ் சொல் உணர்வு நிலையில் இலக்கண வரம்பை வற்புறுத்துகிறது. செயல் நிலையில் செம்மொழி ஆக்கத்தை வற்புறுத்துகிறது. மதிப்பீட்டு நிலையில், இலக்கணத்தை வற்புறுத்தாவிடில் கிளைமொழிகள் தோன்றிப் புதுமொழிகளாக மாறும் என எச்சரிக்கிறது என்று மொழியியல் அறிஞர் செ.வை.சண்முகம் விளக்குகிறார்.

செம்மொழி எனுஞ் சொல்லை, அகநானூற்றின் 349 ஆம் பாடல் 'நடுநிலை தவறாத மொழி' எனும் பொருளில் ஆண்டுள்ளது.

தமிழ் எம்மொழிக்கும் தாழ்ந்து வளையாது தலைநிமிர்ந்து நின்று தன் தனித்தன்மையைக் காத்து, தன்னை அணைத்து அழிக்க வந்த வடமொழியையும் வலுவிழக்கச் செய்து வாழ்ந்து வளர்ந்துவரும் மொழியாகும். ஆங்கிலம் லத்தீன் மொழிக்குக் கடன்பட்டிருப்பது போலவே தமிழ்மொழியும் சமஸ்கிருதத்திற்குக் கடன்பட்டிருப்பதாகக் கருதுவது அறவே பொருந்தாது. பொருள் விளக்கத்தைச் சாகவிடாமல் சொற்களைக் கைவிடுவது ஆங்கிலத்திற்கு இயலாது. ஆனால், சமற்கிருதச் சொற்களுக்கு ஈடான சொற்செல்வங்களைத் தமிழ் அளவின்றிப் பெற்றுள்ளது. இது, முனைவர் ராபர்ட் கால்டுவெல் அவர்களின் ஆய்வு முடிவு.

தென்னாட்டின்கண் சிறந்தொளிராநின்ற அமிழ்தினுமினிய தமிழ்மொழி, எவ்வாற்றான் ஆராய்ந்த வழியும், உயர்தனிச் செம்மொழியே ஆம் என்பது உறுதி. இவ்வளவு உயர்வும் சிறப்பும் வாய்ந்த அருமைத் தமிழ்மொழியை உள்நாட்டுப் புன்மொழிகளோடு ஒருங்கெண்ணுதல் தவிர்த்து, வடநாட்டு உயர்தனிச் செம்மொழி சமற்கிருதம் எனக் கொண்டாற்போலத் தென்னாட்டு உயர்தனிச் செம்மொழி தமிழெனக் கொண்டு புகுதலே ஏற்புடையதாம். இது, 1887இல், சென்னைக் கிறித்துவக் கல்லூரியின் அப்போதைய தமிழ்த் துறைப் பேராசிரியரும் வடமொழி வல்லுநருமாகிய வீ.கோ.சூரிய நாராயண சாத்திரி என்ற பரிதிமாற் கலைஞர் முடிவு.

பிறமொழியின் துணையின்றித் தனித்து இயங்கும் பேராற்றல் கொண்ட தமிழின் சிறப்பு வியப்பை அளிப்பதாகும். தமிழ், செய்யுள் வடிவிலும் உரைநடையிலும், கிரேக்க மொழிச் செய்யுள்களைக் காட்டிலும் தெளிவுடையதாகவும் திட்பமுடையதாகவும் கருத்தாழம் உடையதாகவும் விளங்குகிறது. தமிழ்மொழி நூல்மரபிலும் பேச்சு வழக்கிலும் இலத்தின் மொழியைக் காட்டிலும் மிகுந்த சொல்வளம் கொண்டது. இது, முனைவர் வின்சுலோ அவர்களின் முடிவு.

தமிழ்மொழியைச் செவ்வியல் மொழியாக உருவாக்குவதற்குத் தேவையான அனைத்து முயற்சிகளையும் பழந்தமிழர்கள் மேற்கொண்டு வந்துள்ளனர். அவர்களின் இம்முயற்சி, கிரேக்கர்களுடன் தமிழர்கள் தொடர்பு கொள்வதற்கு முன்னரே ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. இது, கில்பர்ட்டு சிலேடர் என்ற மொழியறிஞரின் முடிவு.

ஆப்பிரிக்கக் கண்டத்திலுள்ள செனகல் நாட்டின் தாக்கர் பல்கலைக் கழகம் முதன்முதலில் தமிழ்மொழியைச் செவ்வியல் மொழி என்று முடிவு இயற்றி ஏற்றுக் கொண்டது.

தமிழ்நாட்டில், அண்ணர்மலை பல்கலைக்கழகம், சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம், தஞ்சைத் தமிழ்ப் பல்கலைக்கழகம். திருநெல்வேலியிலுள்ள மனோன்மணியம் சுந்தரனார் பல்கலைக்கழகம் ஆகியன தமிழைச் செம்மொழி என்று தீர்மானம் இயற்றியுள்ளன.

தனிச் சிறப்புக்கு சங்க இலக்கியங்கள்...

தொல்காப்பியம் மட்டுமல்லாமல் தமிழுக்கு மணி மகுடமாக விளங்குபவை சங்க கால இலக்கியங்கள். அவற்றில் பல நம்மிடையே இன்று இல்லை. காலம் அவற்றை அழித்து விட்டது. நமது கைக்குக் கிடைத்துள்ள சில நூல்கள் ஒரு பாணை சோறுக்கு ஒரு சோறு பதம் என்பது போல தமிழின் தனிச் சிறப்பை வெளிக்காட்ட உதவுகிறது.

பத்துப்பாட்டு, எட்டுத்தொகை, அக நானூறு, புற நானூறு, நற்றினை, ஐங்குறுநூறு, பரிபாடல் ஆகியவை அவற்றில் சில. இக்கால கட்டத்தில் தமிழ் இலக்கியம் மிக செழுமையான நிலையில் இருந்தது. சங்க கால இலக்கியம், தமிழின் பொற்காலம் என்பதில் சந்தேகம் இல்லை.

அதேபோல தமிழின் தலை சிறந்த அடையாளங்களில் ஒன்று திருக்குறள். தமிழ் என்ற வார்த்தை ஒரு இடத்தில் கூட வராமல், உலகின் எந்த மூலையில் இருப்பவருக்கும் பொருந்தும் வகையிலான இந்த அரும் படைப்பு, தமிழுக்கு மட்டும் சொந்தமானதல்ல, உலகுக்கே பொதுவானது. அதனால்தான் குறளை உலகப் பொது மறையாக போற்றுகிறது இலக்கிய உலகம்.

கி.பி. 3வது நூற்றாண்டில் சிலப்பதிகாரம், மணிமேகலை என்ற இரட்டை காப்பியங்களைக் கண்டது தமிழ். தமிழின் ராமாயணம், மகாபாரதம் என இதைச் சொல்லலாம். அதேபோல கம்ப ராமாயணமும். தமிழின் அபாரமான படைப்புகளில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

வால்மீகியின் ராயாணத்தை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டே இந்த படைப்பை கம்பர் படைத்திருந்தாலும், அதன் சாயல் கொஞ்சம் கூட இல்லாமல் தனது சுய படைப்பு போல இதை அமைத்திருப்பது மிக மிக வியப்புக்குரியது. அது கம்பரின் திறமையா அல்லது தமிழின் செழுமையா என்பதே ஒரு பட்டிமன்றத் தலைப்புக்குரியது. அதனால்தான் இன்றளவும் கம்ப ராமாயாணம் விவாதப் பொருளாக பட்டி தொட்டியெங்கும் வலம் வந்து கொணடிருக்கிறது.

பரவசப்படுத்தும் பக்தி இலக்கியம்

பக்தி இலக்கியத்திலும் தமிழுக்கு தனிச் சிறப்பு உண்டு. குறிப்பாக நாயன்மார் இலக்கியம் தமிழுக்கு கிடைத்த இன்னொரு மகுடம். திருஞானசம்பந்தர், திருநாவுக்கரசர், சுந்தரர், மாணிக்கவாசகர் ஆகியோர் நான்கு தலை சிறந்த நாயன்மார்கள் ஆவர்.

அதேபோல 12 ஆழ்வார்கள் தமிழுக்கு செய்த சேவை மறக்க முடியாதது. அவர்களில் ஆண்டாளும், குலசேகர ஆழ்வாரும் குறிப்பிடத்தகுந்தவர்கள். சூடிக் கொடுத்த சுடர்க் கொடியாள் ஆண்டாள் படைத்த திருப்பாவை தமிழின் தனிச் சிறப்புக்கு அருமையான உதாரணம்.

தமிழுக்கு அருஞ்சேவை புரிந்தவர்களில் உமறுப் புலவரை குறிப்பிடாமல் இருக்க முடியாது. சீறாப்புராணம் என்ற சீரிய காவியத்தைப் படைத்தவர் உமறுப் புலவர். 5000 பாடல்களில் அண்ணல் நபிகளாரின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாற்றை அரிய பாடல்கள் மூலம் வடித்துள்ளார் உமறுப் புலவர்.

அதேபோல கிறிஸ்தவ சமுதாயத்தினரின் தாக்கமும் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் விரவிக் கிடக்கிறது. அதிலும் கால்டுவெல், வின்ஸ்லோ, ஜி.யு.போப், பெஸ்கி ஆகியோரின் பங்களிப்பு தமிழுக்கு மிகப் பெரியது. இத்தாலியைச் சேர்ந்த பெஸ்கி படைத்த தேம்பவாணி தமிழின் அரும்பெரும் கவிப் படைப்புகளில் ஒன்றாக ஜொலிக்கிறது.

- தமிழில் கிட்டத்தட்ட 22 வட்டார வழக்குகள் உள்ளன. ஆதி திராவிடர், ஐயர், ஐயங்கார், அரவா, பருகண்டி, கசுவா, கொங்கர், கொரவா, கொர்சி, மதராஸி, பரிகலா, பாட்டு பாஷை, இலங்கை தமிழ், மலேயா தமிழ், பர்மா தமிழ், தெனாப்பிரிக்கா தமிழ், திகாலு, அரிஜன், சங்கேதி, கெப்பார், மதுரை, திருநெல்வேலி, கொங்கு மற்றும் குமரி ஆகியவையே அவை.

15 Facts About Tamil Language And Its Importance In Indian History

The Tamil language is the world's oldest living language.

It is an official language spoken in Tamil Nadu, India, as well as Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore, among other places. The Indian government formally recognized it as a classical language in October 2004.

Tamil people belong to south India and speak the Tamil language, the first Indian language. It is the only language in Indian history to achieve this rank. Along with Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, Hebrew, Chinese, and Arabic, Tamil is one of the world's seven classical languages.

The Tamil language is considered a Dravidian language and is largely spoken in India. It is also the official language of two nations, Sri Lanka and Singapore, and has large populations in Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa.

Tamil is the only language that is a 5000-year-old Indian language. Tamil, or Tamil Thi (Mother Tamil), as it is known in Hindu mythology, was created by Lord Shiva.

In the Tamil language, there are more than 4 million (40 lakh) words.

The sovereign nations of Singapore and Sri Lanka, as well as the Union Territory of Puducherry and the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, all speak Tamil as an official language. However, the percentage of Tamil speakers in the general population is decreasing.

Known as the 'mother of all languages', Sanskrit is one of the ancient languages. Sanskrit is one of India's 22 official languages and is the major classical language of the Indian subcontinent. Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism all use it for liturgical purposes.

Tamil Language Origin History

Tamil is one of the few living classical languages, with a two-millennia-old literary heritage. Because of Tamil's high level of diglossia and the importance bestowed on classical Tamil, much of the vocabulary and forms of spoken Tamil have been retained in modern Tamil, with the higher registers of literary Tamil tending towards the classical language.

Tamil, like the other Dravidian languages, has uncertain roots, but unlike most of India's other recognized literary languages, it is not descended from Sanskrit. Tamil has the oldest literature among the Dravidian languages (Hart, 1975).

However, it is impossible to date the language and literature properly. In India and Sri Lanka, literary works were kept in palm leaf manuscripts (implying many copies and recopies) or via oral transmission, making direct dating impossible.

However, external historical records and internal linguistic evidence suggest that the oldest existing works were most likely written in the second century CE. The Tolkppiyam, a treatise on poetics and Tamil grammar that portrays the language of the classical period, is the earliest existing document in Tamil.

The oldest pieces of this book may date back to approximately 200 BCE (Hart, 1975).

Apart from these, the oldest surviving examples of Tamil writing are third-century BCE rock tamil inscriptions written in Tamil-Brahmin script, a modified variant of the Brahmi alphabet (Mahadevan, 2003).

Linguists divide Tamil literature and language into three periods: ancient (500 BCE to 700 CE), medieval (700 CE to 1500 CE), and modern (after 1500 CE) (1500 CE to the present).

Many Sanskrit loan words were adopted by Tamil throughout the medieval period, which many 20th century purists, especially Parithimaar Kalaignar and Maraimalai Adigal, subsequently strove to eradicate.

Thanith thamizh iyakkam was the name of the movement (meaning pure Tamil movement). As a result, Sanskrit borrowed terms are rarely seen in official papers, public addresses, or scientific discussions in Tamil.

Family Of Tamil Language

Tamil is part of the Dravidian language family, which includes roughly 26 languages native to the Indian subcontinent. Malayalam is one of Tamil's closest Indian languages; the two languages diverged during the ninth century AD.

Despite the fact that many of the distinctions between Tamil and Malayalam show a prehistoric split of the western dialect, the process of splitting into a different language, Malayalam, did not take place until the 13th or 14th century. Some of the other main Dravidian languages are Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu, among others.

Tamil is the oldest language and is a Dravidian language family member that has been spoken in southern India and the northeastern Sri Lankan regions since prehistoric times.

It is spoken as a first language by 61.5 million people in India, mostly in Tamil Nadu and adjoining states, as well as by eight million second-language speakers in northeastern Sri Lanka.

The Tamil Thai Temple in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, is the world's only temple dedicated to a language. The Tamil Lexicon is a 12-volume encyclopedia of Tamil words and Tamil culture. The Tamil Prayer Book is the first Tamil prayer app for the iPhone and iPad.

The Writing System Of Tamil Language

Tamil was initially written in Tamil Brahmi, a variant of the Tamil Brahmi script. By the fifth century AD, Tamil writing had evolved into the Vaeuttu script, which was more rounded.

Tamil-Brahmi is a variant of the Brahmi script used to write inscriptions in the early forms of the Old Tamil script. The Brahmi script influenced the development of the Tamil script.

The Chola-Pallava script, a new alphabet for Tamil, was established in the sixth century under the Pallava dynasty (275-897 AD). In Sanskrit loanwords, it employs several letters from Vateluthu.

In the northern portion of the Tamil-speaking region, the Chola-Pallava script replaced Vaeuttu by the eight century, while Vaeuttu was still used in south till the 11th century. The Chola-Pallava alphabet developed into the contemporary Tamil script during the next few centuries.

The Tamil script was reduced in the nineteenth century to make it easier to typeset. The regularization of vowel markers was another 20th-century simplification.

The word 'Tamil' has several meanings. Centamil is particularly well suited to writing literary Tamil.

It is, however, unsuitable for writing colloquial Tamil, koduntamil . Attempts were made in the 19th century to construct a written representation of the vernacular spoken language. In today's day and age, colloquial written language is mostly found in school texts and dialogue scenes in fiction.

Tamil is written in an Arabic script called Arwi, which is used by Muslims that speak Tamil.

Importance Of Tamil Language

Tamil is one of the world's oldest surviving languages, possessing a vast knowledge of literature and grammar. It has served as a vehicle for individuals to communicate their deepest thoughts, goals, and ideals.

Tolkaappiyam, the company's earliest work, dates from around 200 BC. The Sangam era produced some of Tamil literature's finest works. The poets of the Sangam period came from all walks of life, from potters and peasants in a hamlet to merchants and the upper class.

What is Flag Day? Here’s a guide

WAUBEKA, Wis. (AP) — Each June, the people of Waubeka venerate perhaps the nation’s most enduring symbol, celebrating Flag Day, a holiday that escapes the notice of many Americans.

But this unincorporated Wisconsin town about 35 miles north of Milwaukee takes the day seriously. After all, it lays claim to being the birthplace of Flag Day, thanks to a tenacious teacher in a one-room schoolhouse.

Here are some things to know about the obscure flag-waving holiday.

What is Flag Day?

Flag Day commemorates June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress determined the composition of the nation’s banner: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

President Woodrow Wilson issued a 1916 proclamation of June 14 as Flag Day and in 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed the formal observance into law. And it falls during Flag Week, after another congressional dictum in 1966.

What about July 4?

Yes, Independence Day makes prominent use of the flag. But the emblem is important enough to have its own day, according to David Janik, a Waubeka native and second-generation president of the National Flag Day Foundation.

“July 4th, we’re celebrating our independence,” Janik said. “But on Flag Day, we’re celebrating the birth of our flag, which is the symbol of our country, the symbol that is seen all around the world as the helper, the people who won’t leave you out in the cold.”

Why Waubeka?

On June 14, 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand, an 18-year-old Waubeka native teaching at Stony Hill School, put a flag in his inkwell and assigned his students an essay about what the flag means to them. Cigrand left the next year for dental school in Chicago, but he never gave up his advocacy for a national day dedicated to the flag.

Cigrand realized his dream in 1916 when Wilson issued his proclamation.

Although he died in 1932, Waubeka never forgot Cigrand and in 1946, community leaders established the town’s Flag Day celebration, which has run continuously since then.

Any other ‘first’ Flag Days?

Yes. The earliest mention of Flag Day involves a man named George Morris who organized such a commemoration on June 14, 1861, in Hartford, Connecticut, marked by a patriotic program and prayers for Union Army success in a young Civil War. But apparently, the festivities were never repeated.

Pennsylvanians will challenge Cigrand’s coronation as “Father of Flag Day.” Pittsburgh native William T. Kerr began his advocacy in 1888 and a year later became national chairman of the American Flag Day Foundation, holding that position for a half a century. Kerr was among those standing beside Truman when he signed the Flag Day law.

As for the expected friendly rivalry, Janik said his father, the late Jack Janik, “took care of that.” The elder Janik traveled to Washington and lobbied Congress, which in 2004 adopted a resolution naming Waubeka “the birthplace of Flag Day.”

What about the essays?

Along with the parade, the bands, the patriotism awards, the military honor guards and a dog named Harlow who turns 8 on Flag Day and sported a red, white and blue boater on her head, there are the essays.

In the spirit of Cigrand and his students of 139 years ago, the Waubeka Flag Day celebration includes an annual essay contest and draws entries from across the nation — this year from New York to Nevada and Wisconsin to Texas.

The Stars and Stripes “represent a nation where immigrants like my grandparents are welcomed, where diversity is celebrated and where justice is present for all,” wrote Neel Sood, a 4th grader from Bridgewater, New Jersey.

Adell, Wisconsin 7th grader Ryan Spang wrote that “the American flag represents unity. We are one nation, united by our similarities and differences. We support people in our communities in times of need and we cheer them on in times of achievement.”

Why isn’t it a day off?

Flag Day isn’t like Thanksgiving, Memorial Day and a smattering of other federal holidays that generally mean Americans can spend the day off work.

Instead, it’s officially recognized nationwide, and government services are still open and the mail still gets delivered. Only Pennsylvania marks it as a state holiday, allowing residents to stay home from work and school.

But another backyard barbecue isn’t required to feel the love in Waubeka.

“Our passion for the flag here is very deep,” Janik said. “The flag is the symbol of our country — it symbolizes individualism, success, loss, daring, chivalry. People need a compass to guide them, and the flag is a great compass.”

What ‘Inside Out 2’ Teaches Us About Anxiety

A new emotion has taken over Riley’s teenage mind. And she has lessons for us all.

At the end of “Inside Out,” the 2015 Pixar movie about the emotional life of a girl named Riley, a new button appears on the console used to control Riley’s mood. It’s emblazoned with one word: Puberty.

Joy, one of the main characters who embodies Riley’s emotions, shrugs it off.

“Things couldn’t be better!” Joy says. “After all, Riley’s 12 now. What could happen?”

The answer has finally arrived, nearly a decade later, in the sequel “Inside Out 2.” Riley is now a teenager attending a three-day hockey camp as new, more complex feelings take root in her mind.

There’s Embarrassment, a lumbering fellow who unsuccessfully attempts to hide in his hoodie; the noodle-like Ennui, who lounges listlessly on a couch; and Envy, with her wide, longing eyes.

But it is Anxiety who takes center stage, entering Riley’s mind with literal baggage (no less than six suitcases).

“OK, how can I help?” she asks. “I can take notes, get coffee, manage your calendar, walk your dog, carry your things — watch you sleep?”
