Notes From a Writer's Desk: Summer Writing & Research Plans

Summer is a time to exhale and refresh our minds before evaluating and resetting our goals. After the hustle and bustle of the academic year, what kinds of projects might you tackle over the summer and how might you move forward with them?

Notes From a Writer's Desk: From Text to Text

The Fellowships & Writing Center (FWC) recently held two talks as part of our annual April Speaker Series: “The Translator as Reader and Writer”; and “Moving from the Dissertation to the Book.” [...] While these talks might seem to bear little similarity, a common theme emerged: the transformation of one form of text into another.

Notes From a Writer's Desk: Code for Writing

Being well-written is a merit as valid for coding as for writing. Conversely, some writing foibles prompt me to think, “A computer will not be able to understand this!” It occurred to me that coding principles and best practices can actually help to promote more lucid writing.

Social Data Initiative Social Data Research and Dissertation Fellowships

Ongoing work at the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) over the past several years, including our 2018  “To Secure Knowledge”  report, has identified the importance of access to socially-relevant data in order for researchers to address large issues that inform, empower, and protect the public interest. Much of this data, including social media and the algorithms that determine how information is shared, is proprietary, held by private companies and inaccessible for independent research projects. While social media platforms are beginning to engage the broader research community, critical questions of public importance–such as the role of social media in democratic politics–need to be addressed now with available tools that meet the highest scientific and ethical standards.

The  Social Data Research Fellowship  and the  Social Data Dissertation Fellowship , new endeavors of the Social Science Research Council, with support from Omidyar Network, seek to encourage multifaceted pathways for the collection and analysis of social data, with the larger aim of cultivating robust research on technology and society. In particular, we are interested in supporting research that makes creative use of available social data to investigate how social media interact with democracy and elections. Expanding ethical scholarly access, use, and analysis of a range of social data is critical to understanding the complex ways that social media and other technologies impact political life and processes.

SSRC invites proposals from scholars in the social sciences and related fields for the  Social Data Research Fellowship  and the  Social Data Dissertation Fellowship . These fellowships will support research projects of up to 12 months in length that are focused on two key areas:

  • Advancing scholarly research on the role of social media in elections and democracy, with an emphasis on the 2020 US elections,  including local, state, and/or national primary or general elections. Topics may include (but are not limited to) disinformation, polarization, election integrity, political engagement, political advertising, microtargeting, voter suppression, forms of algorithmic bias related to elections, the impact of news reporting and changes to the media ecosystem, or other related areas. Research that explores more than one social media platform or the relationship between social media platforms is particularly welcome, as is research that explores the disproportionate effects on the political participation of women and under-represented groups.
  • Expanding best practices and methods for accessing and analyzing relevant data that can inform our understanding of the impact of social media on democracy,  including (but not limited to) new methods of data collection and sharing; exploring implications for data privacy and ethics; alternative proxy data to inform our broader understanding of proprietary social media data; and ethnographic, journalistic, or other qualitative approaches to data collection.

Covid-19:  The worldwide Covid-19 pandemic has rapidly changed the policy, electoral, and media landscapes related to the 2020 US elections. This grant opportunity’s primary emphasis is related to social media and the 2020 elections, as described above; however applications that investigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic as it intersects with the core themes outlined above are particularly encouraged. For example, explorations of policy debates, news, or disinformation circulated via social media on topics relevant to the 2020 US elections and amplified by circumstances related to Covid-19–such as vote-by-mail debates, health care policy, Covid-19 disinformation campaigns related to the election, and so on–are welcome.

Eligibility

The  Social Data Research Fellowship  program is open to researchers who hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and are based at an institution of higher education (college or university) or a non-profit focused on social research. These awards may not exceed $50,000 US.

The  Social Data Dissertation Fellowship  program is open to PhD students who are actively enrolled in a PhD program, who may apply for awards of up to $15,000 US in support of dissertation research. Applicants to the program should have completed all PhD coursework by the beginning of the fellowship term.

  • The SSRC application portal will be open to accept applications beginning April 27, 2020.
  • The Data Management Plan Guidelines are available  here.
  • Frequently Asked Questions

Review Process and Selection Criteria

Proposals will be reviewed according to the highest standards of academic research. All proposals are carefully reviewed by SSRC staff to ensure that the proposal meets basic eligibility requirements and that the application fulfills all submission requirements. Each application is then reviewed by persons outside of SSRC who are knowledgeable in the particular fields, methods, or approaches represented by the proposal. The selection committee, or some portion thereof, will meet to discuss proposals and their review, and produce a slate of recommendations for support.

Applications recommended for support will undergo additional ethics and privacy review. Each finalist proposal will be read by ethics reviewers, and any concerns or requests for changes will be shared with the PI via written report. Reports will focus on flagging potential concerns and recommending best practices to mitigate potential harms.

Review Criteria:

  • Intellectual merit: the intellectual significance of the proposed project and its capacity to advance scholarship, scientific understanding, and/or public knowledge, as well as the degree to which the project offers thoughtful and generalizable models or new pathways for studying the impact of social media on democracy.
  • Feasibility: the appropriateness of the proposed activities, methods, planned activities, and budget to accomplish the stated aims of the proposed project.
  • Qualifications: the degree to which the participants have the expertise, skills, and knowledge to accomplish the stated aims of the proposed project.
  • Ethics and Privacy: the commitment to and stated plan to meet or exceed standards for the ethical use of data, including the protection of individuals and their privacy.

This research is funded by Omidyar Network.

UCHRI seeks to foster multi-campus and multi-disciplinary partnerships between UC researchers and their various potential audiences. We especially encourage programs that connect scholars with one another both across the UC system and globally, and whose research and outcomes engage with publics beyond the academy. We support work that bridges disciplinary boundaries and addresses questions of broad concern for the humanities writ large.

UCHRI also offers a limited number of fellowships that support individual research projects by UC faculty and graduate students.

Who makes the funding decisions?

Proposals are reviewed by our Advisory Committee , though some programs are evaluated by a subcommittee of the full Advisory Committee, or a committee of faculty representing various campuses.

We encourage you to consult with a member of our Advisory Committee prior to submitting an application, especially if you have questions or would like significant help with your proposal. A list of committee members can be found on our website, and we encourage you to consult with a member from your own campus if at all possible. Additionally, you might consider consulting with someone from your campus humanities center.

How to Apply

How do i apply for a grant.

All applications must be submitted via Submittable .

Grant Funding

When will i be notified if my application is selected.

Please refer to the call for proposals as this will give you an estimated time for funding decisions.

Will my application be fully funded?

Submitted proposals and budgets are subject to review by the review committee, and revisions on proposals and budget may be required prior to final funding decisions. We encourage the submission of proposals that demonstrate a clear connection between programmatic activities and detailed budget requests.

I received a grant from UCHRI. Am I eligible to receive an additional award in the same academic year?

Due to funding limitations, applicants may only receive one UCHRI grant per academic year, though there may be exceptions for some programs. For example, some grantees may participate in a conference or other collaborative project in the same year that they hold an individual grant.

Will I be notified if my application is not selected?

Yes, all applicants are notified.

If my application is not selected, will I receive review commentaries?

The high volume of applications administered by UCHRI makes it impossible to share review comments. Also, due to the confidential nature of the application process, UCHRI’s policy is not to provide commentaries on applications that have been denied. Please understand that UCHRI funding is limited and our selection panels must make very difficult decisions from among exceptional applications.

Pre-Dissertation Research Grants

The Social Sciences Research Institute provides Pre-Dissertation Research (PDR) grants of up to $3,000 to support expenses related to preliminary dissertation research for graduate students in the School of Social Sciences. All subject areas and methodologies within the School will be considered equally. Usually, PDR applicants will be in their second to fourth year of graduate study. The PDR grants are intended for exploratory research that will enable the student to conduct a pilot or other preliminary projects to formulate a dissertation plan. This initial work should allow the student to prepare a more robust dissertation and submit more competitive dissertation research applications to other internal or external funding sources. For students ready to embark on their dissertation research project fully, the SSRI’s Dissertation Research Improvement Grant competition is more appropriate.

Proposals will be evaluated by the School’s Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC), chaired by the Dean of Social Sciences, and a six-member panel of faculty, one from each department (Sport Management excepted).

Awards have a duration of 18 months. No-cost extensions will not be granted, and the SSRI will reclaim any remaining funds. Students may only receive one PDR grant during their graduate career at Rice.

Application Deadline (Due by 11:45 p.m. CST)

Fall: Sunday, October 29, 2023 Spring: Sunday, March 24, 2024

Award Information (FY24)

Estimated Number of Awards: 8 Anticipated Funding Amount per Award: $3,000 The expected start dates are as follows: Fall cycle on January 1st, and Spring cycle on July 1st.

Proposal Guidelines and Application Packets

Submit the completed online PDR application by the deadline (the online PDR application may be found at the bottom of this page). Incomplete applications will not be considered for funding.

Prepare all materials using a minimum of 11-point Arial or Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins. Upload as a PDF. Be sure to include the following:

  • The proposal narrative (single-spaced, three pages maximum) should discuss the preliminary research proposed and explain how it is preparatory to and expected to strengthen the anticipated dissertation research. The research question of interest and the methods used should be clearly defined and accessible to a non-specialist academic audience. Explain how and why this research question is significant and innovative in the context of existing literature in the discipline. Explain the anticipated end product of the research and its role in the dissertation. In a separate section, outline your schedule for the proposed research. Indicate when you plan to begin the proposed research, where it will be conducted, and when it will end.
  • List of references cited. Each reference should include the names of all authors (in the same sequence in which they appear in the publication), the article and journal title, book title, volume number, page numbers, and year of publication.
  • Potential funding sources for dissertation research. Include a list of possible funding sources to which you might apply.
  • Itemized budget and justification, maximum of two pages. Be sure to include the item, cost, quantity, and rationale for each item. Examples of allowable grant expenses include, but are not limited to, research-related travel (meal expenses and conference travel are not allowed), human subject payments, supplies, software, data set purchases, and other miscellaneous research expenses. The maximum budget amount is $3,000. There is no minimum.
  • A curriculum vita, maximum of two pages
  • A letter from the student’s advisor is required and should be submitted to Chris Rodriguez at [email protected] .This letter should discuss the significance and feasibility of the research and its preliminary role in the student’s dissertation plan. This letter must be received no more than three business days after the PDR proposal deadline. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the letter has been submitted by this deadline .

Evaluation Criteria

The primary criteria are the significance of the proposed research, its feasibility within the planned timeframe, and its potential to enhance or improve future dissertation research and competitive funding applications. The FAC panel will more readily appreciate these aspects of the proposal if written clearly and for a non-specialist academic audience.

Successful Applications

Those who receive a PDR grant are required to submit two additional pieces of information:

  • A 1-2 page research report should be submitted to the SSRI within 60 days of the award's expiration. There is no specific report format that must be followed. Still, reports typically include information such as a summary of the research and results, how the actual results differed from the expected results (if applicable), and how the preliminary results have impacted the dissertation plans. It is not necessary to provide a detailed financial report of how the funds were spent, but it is helpful to include a summary of how the budget needs to be changed during the research in the information.
  • If additional dissertation support is received from an outside agency or a Rice funding source after the SSRI PDR grant is received, please let Chris know and provide award information (sponsor, the amount received, etc.).
