How to write a JP Morgan cover letter

A simple step-by-step guide to writing your very own winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When you send a cover letter with a job application, you should always write your message into the body of your email – or the body of the messaging system if you are sending via a job website.

Why do this?

Simply because you want to get your message seen as soon as the recruiter opens your application.

If you attach the cover letter as a separate item, this means the recipient will have to open it before they can read it – slowing down the process and potentially causing frustration along the way.

So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

To build an instant connection with the recruiter reading your cover letter, start with a warm greeting.

It should be friendly but not casual – keeping it professional at all times.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.

Here are some examples you can use.

  • I am interested in applying for the role of *role at JP Morgan* with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The main purpose of your cover letter is to excite recruiters and make them eager to open your CV. And you achieve this by quickly demonstrating your suitability to the job you are applying for.

Take a look at the job adverts you are applying for, and make note of the most important skills being asked for.

Then, when you write your cover letter, make your suitability the focal point.

Explain how you meet the candidate requirements fully, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider your application.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

When sending a job application to a recruiter or hiring manager, it is important to remember that they will normally be very busy and pushed for time.

Therefore, you need to get you message across to them quickly (in a matter of seconds ideally). So, keep your cover letter short and to-the-point. A long waffling cover letter will overwhelm recruiters when they are running through hundreds of emails in there inbox, but a concise one will get their attention.

So, keep your cover letter to just a few sentences long, and save the extensive detail for your CV.

Sign off professionally

To round of your cover letter, add a professional signature to the bottom, giving recruiters your vital contact information.

This not only gives various means of contacting you, it also looks really professional and shows that you know how to communicate in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Gerald Baker Senior Accountant 07887500404 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application email, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

Email signatures

What to include in your JP Morgan cover letter

Here’s what kind of content you should include in your JP Morgan cover letter…

The exact info will obviously depend on your industry and experience level, but these are the essentials.

  • Your relevant experience – Where have you worked and what type of jobs have you held?
  • Your qualifications – Let recruiters know about your highest level of qualification to show them you have the credentials for the job.
  • The impact you have made – Show how your actions have made a positive impact on previous employers; perhaps you’ve saved them money or helped them to acquire new customers?
  • Your reasons for moving – Hiring managers will want to know why you are leaving your current or previous role, so give them a brief explanation.
  • Your availability – When can you start a new job ? Recruiters will want to know how soon they can get you on board.

Don’t forget to tailor these points to the requirements of the job advert for best results.

Who should I address the cover letter to?

For BB /Boutiques, who should I address the cover letter to? I researched a bit and checked linkedin, and the only names I could pull off the websites are the names of the MD and Vice President. Which one should I address the letter to? I don't want to write: " To whom It May Concern" because thats just useless.

Mayor Quimby's picture

If the job listing has a recruiter's name, use that. Otherwise, "To whom it may concern" is your best option. You might think it's useless, but addressing your cover letter to an MD would be ridiculous.

Cover letters are largely ignored, anyway - don't sweat this too much.

Billy Ray Valentine - Certified Professional

Yea, don't address it to some random MD if you are sending it to HR. See if you can find the name of the head of HR and address it to that person if you REALLY need to put a name on it. But you are fine sending it to "To whom it may concern", it isn't ridiculous. And quimby is right, unless you have a personal contact that you are sending it to nobody is going to read the cover letter.

truucharms's picture

Thanks! What about a smaller firm? They don't have director of human resources and campus recruiting, but they do have director of operations and director of administration. Which one should I address it to?

i used to run into exactly the same problems and it would annoy the hell out of me...through ocr , I now have details of most banks contact info for ib and s&t campus recruiting...so if you (or anyone else needs this), please pm me

alternatively, you could use linked in to search for stuff like campus recruiting or hr or campus investment banking etc and get a name within that companies profile...

for their physical address (particularly boutiques/ MM etc) just go to their websites and get it from under contact details or just google map it (eg Moelis near NYC etc)

or you can just pm me and if I have what you need, i'll just reply back with it

I've sent every cover letter to Human Resources when I've not specifically been told to address it to a particular person.

There are two names listed for recruiting contacts, but again, I'm not sure if these are definitely the correct names. Any general comments will also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I always just address it to "Dear Recruiting Coordinator"...

copecre - Certified Professional

Do you have any contacts in the firm? I'd ask them.

I guess the real question is: is it looked down on to have the greeting read: Dear Hiring Manager/Team?

LongandShortofit - Certified Professional

I've usually gone with Hiring Manager but "Sir or Ma'am" can work as well if you think it fits the firm's culture. For a "very large company" I'd feel pretty confident about Hiring Manager as they probably do actually have such a person.

AI9's picture

Why not "Dear Sir or Madam"? I thought that would be the proper adress if you are not sure who the recipient is

Definitely not "To Whom it May Concern" ... "Dear Shredder" might work - I like that, WalMartShopper.

Don't sweat the details on this one, the content is what matters most. Just start it (no Dear or To):

[insert bank name here] Recruiting,

TimothyBryce's picture

To whom it may concern always works. I also would use the name of their head recruiter or HR person if available

"To Whom it May Concern" sounds like the start of a suicide note.

The job listing has the name of the HR person (Senior HR Analyst) but the job description says the person will report to the Director of IT. I know the name of the Director of IT in the organization, so should I just use their name or should I use the name of the HR person?

this is fine, right? I don't ever put street addresses on, since its through E-recruiting. Let me know if this is a major issue, so I can change the format for the last two banks I apply to (i guess i'll be screwed for all the others lol)

Why are there so many dumb cover letter questions recently? I'm glad that after Mr. White's rant about stupid questions, the "What are my chances?" posts have died down, but these are almost as bad.

If you need cover letter advice, pick up a fucking guide to cover letters. There are at least a million of them on Google. These questions are honestly from Cover Letters 101.

Do you honestly think i haven't searched this forum, used a cover letter guide, used Vault, to find an answer already etc. - I'm a type A from a target. Christ, why couldn't you just answer the question on top of being a d bag?

no cover letter guide has a specific answer to the question: should I address it to the HR contact versus the division I'm applying.

For example, MS has multiple divisions and to each one I used the HR Contact as the person to address it to - maybe I should have put "Dear MS IB , or Dear MS Pub. Finance" instead.

slickmac - Certified Professional

Sorry dude but I agree with b. This is a easy question that you can solve on your own. You might want to consider:

a. Is this an e-mailed cover letter? If so, why would you put an address on at all?

b. Is this through an online application system? If so, make sure the font of your resume and cover letter are identical. If you are truely a type A from a target, you should have no problems asking your career center.

At the end of the day, the header of your cover letter is going to be entirely ignored (except if you address it to the wrong company). What matters is the content. Good luck.

OpsDude - Certified Professional

If it's emailed or online you don't need to address it. C'mon, use common sense..they aren't english teachers grading your formatting.

Hey thanks for the replies, I'm not worried about the formatting, just in regards to applying online. Here is my question more specifically:

My school (mid-tier target) uses E-recruiting but ALSO requires you to submit through the firm's website. On the firm's website, each division you are applying to requires a seperate cover letter. For these cover letters, should I just use the HR contact person from the Dartmouth E-Recruiting website, or should I just put: "Dear Morgan Stanley IB" or "Dear Morgan Stanley ST "

appreciate it.

oversold's picture

How about "Dear Sir or Madam:" and dont worry about it?  geeze -  I understand the type A, but you will be bald by 25 worrying about petty things like that.

CityGirl's picture

try googling "do i address my cover letter to an HR contact"

lol...already got that receding hairline = <3 rogaine

but yeah, i was asking whether we should use the campus HR contact on online applications...I don't think most of you have realized the specific nature of the question, or maybe I'm just an idiot. Its a minor detail anyways....

BTW, did you try to mask your school by saying "mid-tier target" and then the following sentence mention that you go to Dartmouth? lol

haha yes I did...well, at least you guys know that me using the term "mid-tier target" is accurate.

I've been really stressed out and dumbed from the lack of sleep the past few days, but am recuperating since I have a superday tomorrow. I've had a bunch of MM interviews out of town and stuff. Anyways, it turned out it didn't matter what I put for the cover letter address, as several of you correctly pointed out.

big unit, I love how you post in this thread completely feigning like you go to Dartmouth (you and I both know that you don't) and later end up posting about offers at Wachovia ...

I guess the natural thing to do when you get called out on asking a retarded question is to "inadvertently slip" the name of a school that you don't attend to add credibility to your post.

I always put the address on too. In terms of addressing the recipient, I tend to just ask who I ought to address the letter to or if its vague (like Sam etc), I address Sir/Madam. If you can, phone up the office to find out, better to make an impression.

Thank you both, I'll call around tomorrow. I'll put their address top right!

Who do I address the cover letter to? The Associate? Two separate cover letters - one to each analyst?

Thanks in advance.

A Home of Their Own

R1_3

Marcia Hernandez worked for two years to save enough money for a down payment on a first home for herself and her wife, Vivian. A $5,000 Homebuyer Grant from Chase helped make their dreams a reality.

September 14, 2022

  • Customers and Clients
  • Financial Health and Wealth Creation

For years, Marcia Hernandez dreamt of becoming a homeowner in the Miami area. But she knew it would take discipline: Saving enough money for a down payment, educating herself on the homebuying process, working with real estate agents, and—of course—finding the right lender to finance her mortgage.

As a teenager, Hernandez watched her mother struggle through the homebuying process after her parents separated. “They looked at her differently," Hernandez said, recalling how difficult it was for her mother to get home financing as a single, Hispanic woman. “She had a hard time getting the best rates and getting the best loans from the right places."

Hernandez didn't want to face the same difficulties. “Chase was my first choice," she said.

Chase Home Lending Advisor Joseph Enriquez teamed up with Hernandez to go after her goals.

“Marcia was one of the customers that maybe wasn't initially prepared for homeownership," said Enriquez. “She had done some shopping around and she knew where she was going to come up short, so we worked with her on some options and educated her along the way."

As Hernandez worked hard to save money, Enriquez worked with her to research grants and available seller credits to supplement her savings. Fortunately for Hernandez, the pandemic allowed her to shift to working from home. Suddenly, she wasn't spending money like she used to on gas, beauty regimens and coffee.

“I amortized everything I was going to save and I saw a good number," said Hernandez. “I feel like a lot of industries out there don't realize how hard it is sometimes to pick up a certain amount of money. But little things helped get me there."

Hernandez was also surprised to learn what was available to her. “Because Chase is so big, and all over the U.S., I wouldn't think that they would provide such personalized tools online, where you can just easily upload your documents," she said. “For privacy, for accuracy, you also know what they're asking of you and what they need."

Hernandez

Purchasing a home wasn't the only big decision Hernandez was facing. In August, she married her partner, Vivian. Suddenly purchasing a home took on a greater meaning.

“I surprised myself, because I am not a risk taker," said Hernandez. “I started creating my own map, my own route, because I really have someone special in my life. So I thought, let's see how we can move forward, and just bring joy and happiness."

By the time Hernandez found a home she loved, she was able to put money down and begin the loan process.

“It was tight, she was definitely counting all her dollars as we got tax information and insurance," said Enriquez.

It was an incredibly hectic time for Hernandez: The seller was second-guessing selling the home, and Marcia was negotiating breaking the lease on the apartment she'd be leaving. She was juggling working from home and worried about having enough money to cover any unexpected costs that might come up, including during the inspection process.

Then, two weeks into the loan process, Chase updated its Homebuyer Grant program.

“Marcia went from having no grant available to having a $5,000 Homebuyer Grant, which would cover more than half of the assets she needed to bring to the table," said Enriquez.

Despite the fact that it was Enriquez's day off work, he called Hernandez first thing that morning.

“As soon as he mentioned how much it was, I zoned out," said Hernandez. “I didn't realize what had just happened. I was shocked, because money like that doesn't come easy, it takes a very long time to pick up and I should know.

“And I was so grateful. I did cry happy tears."

But Hernandez, not one to celebrate good news too soon, was still cautious.

“It didn't hit until I was inside the home and I signed the papers," she said. “On that day, I realized that I wasn't the only one working hard for this. In fact, Joseph was on the phone during the signing, as I had questions."

“As soon as I signed, I realized that we were going to be homeowners and our life had started."

cover letter to jp morgan

Hernandez shared a few words for future homebuyers to consider as they begin the homebuying process:

  • Self-education is a must. Do your research and make sure the lender you choose is a good fit for you.
  • Be prepared for unexpected expenses, especially during the inspection process. Anything could happen that you can't see with the naked eye, unless you have a specialist to see it. Go the safe route and you won't be sorry later.
  • If you give to the universe, the universe will give back to you one way or another. Be thankful for what you have already, and what's yet to come.

As Hernandez and her wife settle into their new home, a new marriage and a new life together, they feel more confident than ever.

“We feel super powerful now," Hernandez said. “We've done things that we never thought we could do."

JPMorgan reports 6% rise in 1Q profits as bank earnings season begins. Wells Fargo profit falls

cover letter to jp morgan

By KEN SWEET AP Business Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — JPMorgan Chase reported a modest 6% rise in first quarter profits on Friday, as the major banks start reporting their quarter results for the first quarter.

Wells Fargo reported a decline in profit versus a year ago, although the result beat Wall Street’s expectations.

JPMorgan, the nation’s largest bank, earned a profit of $13.42 billion, or $4.44 a share, compared to a profit of $12.62 billion, or $4.10 a share, in the same period a year earlier. JPMorgan’s results were impacted by a $725 million one-time charge to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

While the results did beat analysts’ forecasts, the bank’s stock fell in premarket trading after JPMorgan gave a lower-than-expected forecast for its net interest income for the full year. That forecast largely reflects the bank’s expectation that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this year.

Most metrics of JPMorgan’s business were solid for the quarter. While investment banking revenues were largely flat, the bank reported an uptick in activity. In the consumer bank, profits were up 6% while the bank set aside less money to cover potentially bad loans.

But following his letter to shareholders earlier this month, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon warned that the bank remains concerned about inflation remaining higher than what investors are currently expecting as well as the risk wars and geopolitical tensions pose to the global economy.

“Many economic indicators continue to be favorable. However, looking ahead, we remain alert to a number of significant uncertain forces,” Dimon said, citing the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, high amounts of government spending across the world and ongoing other geopolitical pressures.

Wells Fargo issued its first earnings report since the Biden administration eased some of the restrictions on the bank after a series of scandals.

Wells earned $4.6 billion in the first quarter, or $1.20 per share, beating analyst estimates of $1.06 per share. However, the profit was less than the $5 billion, or $1.23 per share, that Wells earned in the same period a year ago.

The San Francisco-based bank said average loans fell from last year’s first quarter but that drop-off was expected because of elevated interest rates.

Wells shares inched back into positive territory in premarket trading, rising 1% after initially falling nearly 2% after it released the earnings report.

In February, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, one of the regulators of big national banks like Wells Fargo, terminated a consent order that had been in place since September 2016. The order — which came after Wells’ employees were found to have opened millions of accounts illegally in order to meet unrealistic sales goals — required the bank to overhaul how it sold financial products to customers and provide additional consumer protections, as well as employee protections for whistleblowers.

Citigroup will report its first-quarter results later Friday morning.

Sample cover letter for Internship position at J.P.Morgan

Summer intern, got the job yes.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a 2nd year Accounting and Finance student at Warwick Business School, where I have achieved the top result of my year in Entrepreneurship. Having been introduced to J.P. Morgan through its company presentation in London, I had the chance to speak with your M&A Associate Matias Steen, who inspired me to apply for the CIB Investment Banking Analyst Summer Programme 2015.

I am attracted to J.P. Morgan because of its leading reputation in the field of M&A, thereby offering the opportunity to work on some of the world’s largest deals such as Actavis’ recent $25 billion acquisition of Forest Laboratories. J.P Morgan also appeals to me because of its diverse and open culture, for which it has been recognized amongst ‘’World’s Ideal Employers” by Universum in 2014. Moreover, I admire J.P. Morgan for being a responsible firm that shares my vision of giving back to the community, thereby positively contributing to our society through the J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation.

The CIB Investment Banking Analyst Summer Programme represents an exceptional opportunity to immerse myself into J.P. Morgan's corporate culture as well as to learn more about its Investment Banking divisions and to receive feedback on the one that suits me the most. Driven by the dynamic pace of this industry, I look forward to be working on a broad range of M&A transactions by engaging in team discussions, attending client meetings and assisting full-time analysts in their daily tasks such as researching industries, drafting presentations, performing valuations, and building financial models.

Having achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Accounting & Finance, I believe I can bring the necessary quantitative and analytical skills needed for this position. As a summer intern at ABN AMRO, I gained experience in building revenue forecasting models, identifying data trends as well as delivering presentations to C-Level executives. Moreover, during HSBC’s Spring Insight Week, I had the opportunity to pitch on potential M&A transactions and perform comparable company valuations for the TMT industry. Finally, through M&A research with Professor Tao Li, I demonstrated excellence in collecting, synthesizing and interpreting financial data which, together with my fluency in English, French, Russian and Dutch, I hope will allow me to contribute beneficially to your internship.

Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
