Born Victor James Osimhen on December 29th, 1998 in Lagos to parents from Edo state Nigeria. His father, Elder Patrick was a police constable, and together with his late mother, they struggled to make ends meet for their family of six children. As the youngest child of the family, the future was not so bright for him looking at the situation of his family.

How Victor Osimhen Rose to the Top

Osimhen is a goal scorer rated among the best in the world. His rise to the top fascinates many fans. There was a time he was so broke that he supported himself by sweeping the gutters in return for a payment of 20 naira. He also fetched water for neighbors to be paid 80 naira at the end of the day.

Other members of his family were not left out as everyone was up and doing to make sure the family moved forward. His brother sold newspapers while his sisters hawked oranges on the streets of Lagos. Osimhem augmented the payment from his cleaning job by hawking water in the traffic.

Despite these challenges, Osimhen was determined to turn his life and be successful at a childhood of dream of becoming a great footballer. His big break came after he participated in an open camp for the under 17 national team under coach Emmanuel Amuneke.

His spot on the team was confirmed when he netted 10 goals for the team in the U17 FIFA world cup in Chile. It placed the U17 national team on the fifth-place title for the tournament.

The stellar performance at the U17 world cup showcased the talents of the young player to the rest of the world. It was not long after that a German club, VFL Wolfsburg grabbed the talented player. At first, he was on a pre-contract before they signed him to a contract of three and half years when he reached 18 years.

After years of playing for different teams, Osimhen is playing for series A side, Napoli.

Victor Osimhen's rise: From Lagos streets to Napoli's star – Nigeria's hope for AFCON glory

Rising from the ashes of an infamous Lagos dumping site to becoming the golden boot of Nigeria, Victor Osimhen is the epitome of a modern-day Cinderella. Can the Napoli striker lead the Super Eagles to glory at the African Cup of Nations?

UEFA Champions League 2024: Barcelona x Napoli pode ser decisivo para Mundial de Clubes 2025; entenda como

Graduating from the school of hard knocks, Victor Osimhen had to earn a living selling water sachets on the streets of Lagos and scavenging for shoes and football cleats at the infamous Olusosun Landfill. To add to his misfortune, Osimhen lost his mother at an early age while he and his six siblings supported each other after their father lost his job.

“As a young boy who came from the streets of Olusosun, who had to hawk in traffic almost every day of the week while growing up in order to survive the numerous challenges my family and I were facing, becoming a treasure in Africa and world football was a wild dream,” Osimhen said in a post on X.

His incredible journey continues at the African Cup of Nations . Can he lead the Super Eagles to the title in Ivory Coast?

“We are capable of winning this tournament because the squad is packed with players who are performing exceptionally well for their European clubs,” Osimhen told AFP.

Victor Osimhen: Rising from ashes into the limelight

Osimhen’s football talents provided the launching pad for a fairytale rise out of Olusosun, an impoverished community at the foot of one of Africa’s largest dumping sites. The Napoli forward has since emerged as a global superstar and a prolific scorer for his club and country.

The 25-year-old is expected to be a talisman in the Super Eagles’ bid for a fourth **CAF Africa Cup of Nations. **

The Nigerian national side reached the tournament in emphatic fashion courtesy of an Osimhen hat-trick in their 6-0 triumph over Sao Tome in their final 2023 Afcon qualifier. His performance launched him into fourth place on Nigeria’s all-time goal-scoring list. Osimhen contributed five goals in four Afcon qualification matches.

With 20 goals in 26 appearances since making his national debut in 2017, Osimhen is the highest-scoring active Nigerian player, trailing the second-placed Segun Odegbami by three. Rashidi Yekini is at the top of the list with the 37 he scored between 1984 and 1998.

Victor Osimhen: Betting on the Super Eagles

Osimhen was feeling bullish about his team’s prospects of triumphing in Ivory Coast and, in the process, making up for their disappointment of missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles fell short as Ghana advanced courtesy of away goals in their 1-1 draw in Nigeria.

“All of us are desperate to make up for failing to reach the 2022 World Cup. The only way we can achieve that goal is by winning the Cup of Nations.”

Osimhen’s heroics are not limited to the national team but extend to his duties for Italian giants Napoli, where his insatiable appetite for goals helped secure the club’s first Serie A Championship title (Scudetto) in 33 years.

He scored the championship-winning goal in their draw against Udinese and drew the curtain on a spectacular season, hitting the back of the net 26 times during the 2022/23 season. Lifting the title, Osimhen became only the third Nigerian to win the Scudetto while also usurping Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o as the African with the most goals in a single Serie A season.

Victor Osimhen: Africa's best

Osimhen was richly rewarded for his breakthrough season. He earned the 2023 African Footballer of the Year crown, beating Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi for the top accolade.

“Losing my dear parents in the course of this journey leaves a scar in my heart as they have always been my major driving force for success since I was a kid. May their souls continue to rest in peace,” he said on X.

“Winning the CAF Best African Player 2023 is a testament of my hard work, your love and support. I am so proud of myself for achieving this prestigious award. I am sure my parents in heaven are smiling at me. This is for you.”

Last season was a culmination of a Cinderella football story that started back in 2015 when Osimhen first demonstrated a temperament for the big stage. Osimhen led Nigeria to a record fifth title at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, scoring 10 goals throughout the tournament, earning him the Golden Boot and Silver Ball awards.

Although Osimhen initially battled to find his feet in the transition from the age-group ranks to the seniors due to injuries and form, he has bloomed, making lasting impacts playing for Sporting Charleroi (Belgium) and Lille (France) before joining Napoli.

Still only in his mid-20s, Osimhen is predicted to have an even brighter future on the global stage. The striker is a star on a mission.

‘He’s reaching cult status’: Napoli’s rising star Victor Osimhen

The Nigerian’s goals have brought Napoli to the brink of a first Serie A title since 1990, making him a hero in the port city. His blistering form has also made him one of the most coveted players in world football.

Napoli's Victor Osimhen celebrates scoring a goal against Torino

Victor Osimhen’s second goal against Juventus in January will live long in the memory of Napoli fans .

With Napoli winning 3-1 at home, the Nigerian striker rose above everyone else to meet a cross to head past Wojciech Szczęsny and grab his second of the day, effectively killing the game.

In his typical style, the Nigerian whisked off his trademark face mask after scoring and ran towards the fans, taking it all in. Napoli’s eventual 5-1 win exorcised Juventus – a ghost of their past – and sent a statement that the Partenopei was on course to win a first Scudetto in more than 30 years.

Osimhen has led Napoli’s title charge but, while his talents were never in doubt, few predicted Napoli’s 24-year-old striker would be so dominant this season.

His tally of 21 goals in Italy’s Serie A has made him the league’s top scorer by some margin, and he has also scored four in Napoli’s historic run to the Champions League quarters.

Osimhen is not only a ruthless finisher but a scorer of all types of goals – from the tap-in to the spectacular, with either foot or his head – and his four assists in Serie A show he has more to his game than just goalscoring.

With Napoli currently 14 points clear of their nearest rivals in Serie A and poised to win their first title since Diego Maradona led them to a second Scudetto in 1990, Osimhen has captured the heart of a gritty, working-class port city that knows how to put its heroes on a pedestal.

The Nigerian international’s face with his mask – worn after he sustained a cheekbone injury – adorns cakes across the southern city. Fans queue up to buy replica masks from stalls outside the stadium. And a song composed by musician Alex Garini about the striker went viral in February and celebrates his goal-scoring ability and his grit to defy the odds.

“Victor is reaching cult status with his dedication to the team, his embrace of the fans that we see when he celebrates his goals and how they in turn have begun to infuse him into daily life,” Lolade Adewuyi, the managing editor at Soccernet Nigeria, told Al Jazeera.

“Perhaps he will become a Maradona-esque figure if he leads them to the Serie A and the Champions League titles.”

Osimhen missed three games in recent weeks with a groin injury and Napoli have looked blunt without him.

But he will be back in the side for Tuesday’s crunch second-leg Champions League quarterfinal against fellow Italian giants AC Milan, who beat Napoli 1-0 in the first leg in Milan.

Meanwhile, his blistering form this season has made him one of the most coveted players in world football.

Giuseppe de Rosa fixes a cardboard cutouts of Napoli's Victor Osimhen in the Spanish quarters of Naples

‘He has so much fight inside him’

Osimhen grew up in Olusosun, Lagos, idolising former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba.

He has said in interviews that his family had to struggle to make ends meet when he was a child and he had lost his mother at a young age.

Journalist Oma Akatugba, Osimhen’s friend and journalist from Nigeria, believes these struggles helped shape the Lagos-born star’s playing style and character.

“He once said to me that in a very poor neighbourhood, [his family] were the poorest. They needed to fight for everything. He had to work very hard, sell newspapers, do all kinds of menial jobs to earn a living while playing,” Akatugba said.

“That is what has built him into the strong, energetic, pacy and powerful striker that he is today. Much more than that, he has so much fight inside of him.”

Napoli's Victor Osimhen in action with Eintracht Frankfurt's Obite Ndicka

Nigeria Under-17s coach Nnamdi Onuigbo says Osimhen always appeared to have a huge drive to succeed.

“Nigeria is a tough place to try to become a professional footballer. Despite all the talents here, the structure and opportunities are not as organised or readily available as it is in Europe,” he said.

“It takes a brave, determined kid to make it to the top from the suburbs in Nigeria. Osimhen is one of them.”

Akatugba says that, since his early days back in Nigeria, Osimhen has learned to control his temper and avoid being provoked by opponents, and his game has developed significantly.

“His game has evolved from that player who plays with that raw, brute force. That raw energy now has some level of finesse to the game,” Akatugba said. “Especially after joining Napoli, where football is quite tactical, as is the case in Italy generally. Also, playing under [coach] Luciano Spalletti [has improved him].”

Osimhen first moved to Europe in 2017, joining Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. He struggled to get first-team games and didn’t score in 14 games for the club. But he hailed how ex-Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez helped him in training during their time at the club.

That proved vital after he moved to Charleroi on loan in 2018 and went on to score 20 goals in 36 games in all competitions for the Belgian club. He scored 18 goals in a season for Lille in 2019-20, before securing a move to Napoli in July 2020.

Akatugba says the experience of moving in quick succession didn’t just improve him as a footballer, it also matured him as a person.

“He has moved quite a lot in a very short period. That has helped him adapt to different cultures and to relate with people of different backgrounds and understand them,” he said.

Osimhen’s partnership with Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at Napoli has sparkled in the league, and it has become the talk of Europe as well. Coach   Spalletti’s attacking, possession-based style, which also relies on allowing the strengths of individual players to thrive, has made Napoli a well-oiled machine.

“Earlier, a lot of Napoli journalists told me that perhaps [Osimhen] might need to improve tactically … He seems to understand feedback, he seems to understand positive criticism. That has helped his game to grow,” said Akatugba.

Osimhen’s 53 goals for Napoli have come in just 92 games.

Meanwhile, his success at Napoli is also garnering the Italian club a growing fanbase back home.

“Many Nigerians are keenly following Napoli’s games because of his incredible performances – just like the old Nigerian stars brought their following to their clubs,” Adewuyi noted.

“For example, many Nigerians, including myself, are fans of Arsenal because of Nwankwo Kanu. Many young Nigerians are becoming fans of Napoli because of Victor.”

Osimhen celebrates with Napoli fans after a match

However, Osimhen’s transfer value is rising with every goal he scores and he is reportedly on the radar of several Premier League sides.

Osimhen has said he wants to emulate Drogba and play in the Premier League one day.

Napoli fan Andrea Morganti says he desperately hopes Osimhen can resist the allure of the Premier League for a while longer, and says Osimhen’s connection with those in Naples is not only down to his goals.

“It’s about everything, the way he moves on the pitch and just the relationship he has with us fans outside the pitch. There isn’t a moment that he doesn’t stop to say hello and autograph our shirts. He is a humble boy who loves the city,” Morganti told Al Jazeera.

“Let’s hope he stays in Naples for a long time. We are ready to celebrate [the title] with him.”

How Nigeria's Victor Osimhen became Africa's best footballer

The Napoli striker has been named Africa's Men's Footballer of the Year after a fairy tale 2023. The 24-year-old led Napoli to their first title in 33 years but faced his fair share of adversity on the way to the top.

Five years ago, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen was let go after failing to impress at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, but on Monday night, he won the most prominent individual men's prize in African football, the CAF Footballer of the Year award.

"It's a dream come true for me," Osimhen said after beating out Egypt's Mohamed Salah and Morocco's Achraf Hakimi to the golden ball at a lavish ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco.

"I appreciate Nigerians for their support. I appreciate Africa for putting me on the map, encouraging me and defending me, regardless of my shortcomings."

But the story could have been very different.

Osimhen grew up in poverty in Olusosun, a run-down neighborhood in  Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos. The pungent smell of the nearby landfill was a constant in the life of the young footballer, whose mother died when he was a young boy. As the youngest child, he was raised by his father and supported by his oldest brother, Andrew, who sold newspapers to help him achieve his dreams of playing football.

His first pair of football boots were picked up from the Olusosun dumpsite, and he dreamed of playing among the elite like his idol, the Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba. He sold bags of water and snacks in Lagos traffic and worked as a laborer carrying mixed concrete on his head at a construction site near his home. Poverty toughened him up.

"The place where I came from, nothing is promised," Osimhen said in a recent interview . "I am so happy about my breakthrough because nobody gave me a chance of making it out of the trenches. Not just me but my whole family. For me to work my way up, I have shown the kids there that when you work hard and you're focused, anything is possible with God."

Breakout year

Coach Emmanuel Amuneke was one of the first to spot his talents, selecting him for Nigeria at the FIFA U17 World Cup 2015 in Chile. The lanky striker took his chance and scored ten goals in seven matches to lead Nigeria to their fifth title, but his family was so poor that they had to go to a neighbor's house to watch the live matches.

Amuneke remembered how Osimhen stood out from hundreds of other players. "I think for Victor, probably because of the [tough] early life that he spent when he was young, that helped him," said Amuneke at the beginning of this year . "He's someone that wanted to succeed. Even when you look at him today with Napoli, he doesn't like to lose. He always wants to win, one quality that singles Victor out."

When major European clubs, including Arsenal, tried to sign him, he and his family chose Wolfsburg for the calm environment and the club's ability to develop young players. But a series of injuries limited him to 14 Bundesliga games without a goal before he was shipped off on loan to Charleroi in Belgium.

"Wolfsburg condemned him," his older brother Andrew told DW. "They said he was not fit, that he was not good. But Charleroi gave him that platform." Former Wolfsburg sporting director Jörg Schmadtke later admitted it was a "poor decision" when Osimhen joined Napoli from Lille for over €60 million ($64.8 million).

Turbulent times in Naples

It took him two years to settle down in the south of Italy. His father died during the COVID-19 lockdown, and he caught the virus when he attended the funeral. Osimhen has also battled severe injuries, including breaking his cheekbone and eye socket back in 2021, which is why he wears a protective mask to this day.

It was last season, his third in Naples, that Osimhen hit the peak of his powers to help crown  Napoli Serie A champions for the first time  since Diego Maradona led them to glory in 1987 and 1990, finishing as the league's top scorer with 26 goals.

"I think he was the most important element of that title challenge," Kristen Schlewitz, author of the book "More Than Maradona," told DW. "He has this graceful elegance that contradicts his reputation as a physical player."

Only Maradona is more revered than Osimhen in the city of Naples. Like the Argentine legend, the young Nigerian's face adorns murals across the city, where they worship their football stars like gods. Fans stand in front of his home every night singing his name. They hang around restaurants until the early hours for autographs. Their adulation matches his boisterous spirit.

"For a boy from Olusosun, who would have thought I would have my picture beside Maradona's," said Osimhen. "It's like a dream."

But his relationship with the club was strained in September when Napoli's official TikTok account posted a video mocking the player after he missed a penalty against Bologna.

He deleted several photos of him wearing the club's shirt from his social media. His agent, Roberto Calenda, threatened to sue Napoli over the "I am not a boy, I am coconut" controversy after a second club Tiktok video mocked him with the viral song by the Swedish YouTube channel Coconut Hen.

Much of the tension has arisen because Osimhen has refused to extend his contract, which expires in 2025. Napoli have reportedly quoted sums upwards of €200 million ($216 million), scaring off potential buyers and including suitors from the Saudi Premier League in the summer.

AFCON expectations

Despite his club success, Osimhen has yet to win a senior title with his country. He missed the last Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon through injury and failed to lead Nigeria to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as they fell short in their final qualifying match against Ghana. Barring any late injuries, Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro expects the player, who scored ten goals in qualifying, to play a vital role in their Africa Cup of Nations challenge in Ivory Coast next month.

"Victor is a fantastic player and striker," Peseiro told DW. "He is a player with the capacity to score and to create offensive-defensive pressure."

Nigeria won their last AFCON title a decade ago in South Africa and are keen to return to the continental pinnacle. They have begun a social media campaign titled "Let's do it again," inspired by a strong crop of talent that is now spearheaded by Africa's Player of the Year.

Table of Contents

Victor Osimhen, a name synonymous with football excellence, has captivated the hearts of fans worldwide with his remarkable talent on the pitch. But what lies beneath the surface of his success story? To truly appreciate the journey of this Nigerian football sensation, we delve into the depths of his childhood and explore untold biography facts that unveil the man behind the jersey.

Early Life and Family Background

Born on December 29, 1998, in Lagos, Nigeria, Victor Osimhen hails from humble beginnings. He grew up in a close-knit family where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Osimhen, worked tirelessly to provide for their children. Victor, the last of six siblings, was raised in a modest neighborhood where life’s challenges were a constant presence.

Early Passion for Football

Victor’s love affair with football began at an early age. As a child, he would kick a makeshift ball made of rags through the dusty streets of Lagos, displaying an innate talent that caught the attention of neighbors and passersby. His family recognized his passion and enrolled him in a local football club, laying the foundation for his future success.

WHO IS VICTOR OSIMHEN?

Osimhen has been one of the most in-form African players in the world game so far this term, scoring ten goals in the space of 19 matches for LOSC Lille and Nigeria after moving from Wolfsburg July 2019.

After scoring 20 goals in Belgium last season, Osimhen was delighted to follow compatriots Peter Odemwingie and Vicent Enyeama. He adapted seamlessly to life in a new league, country, club, and city. Even if his form has dipped in recent weeks, the 20-year-old has already dramatically over-performed since moving to France for an undisclosed fee reported to be €12 million.

Victor after completing his move to LOSC Lille

Osimhen appears set to be the figurehead of the Super Eagles’ attack for a decade to come. Seemingly, he can be the man to break Rashidi Yekini’s 37 record goal haul for the national side after adding to his tally in a 2-1 comeback win over the Benin Republic at Wilson Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Victor Osimhen Biography CAREER OVERVIEW

His impressive form for Charleroi last season earned him a recall to the Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where his only appearance was when Nigeria won bronze last month.

Osimhen was the top scorer as Nigeria clinched a fifth Under-17 World Cup title in 2015 with ten goals in Chile, which saw him win the Golden Boot and Silver Ball.

After the tournament, he decided against joining the English side Arsenal to sign with the 2009 German champions Wolfsburg in January 2016. Still, injuries restricted him to 16 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Despite being a part of the squad for two years, his lack of games meant he missed out on going to the 2018 World Cup with Nigeria, and he swiftly moved to Belgium initially on loan before joining on a permanent deal.

Osimhen was also part of the Nigeria side that won the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal in November 2015, which also qualified them for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The exploits saw him crowned the 2015 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Youth Player of the Year.

He has played for Nigeria at all levels, from under-17 to the full senior side, for whom he has won eight caps, scoring two goals from the penalty spot in the process.

In October 2019, Osimhen saw off the challenges of Monaco’s Algerian international Islam Slimani and veteran Nantes defender Nicolas Palais to the monthly honor awarded by the Player’s Union (UNFP) for French Ligue 1’s best player in September. He succeeds Angola-born Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who won the August award and became the youngest ever winner at 16.

How old is Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen was born on 29 December 1998 to his late mother and father, Elder Patrick Osimhen, in Lagos, Nigeria. He was brought up by his father following the death of his mother. He is the last of seven children. Life was not a roses bed for him before he hit stardom at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup as he once sold sachets of water in Lagos traffic to help his family.

What state is Victor Osimhen from?

Victor’s parents have their family origin from Southern Nigeria in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State in Nigeria. The family name “Osimhen” means ‘God is good’ in the native Ishan dialect.

Like many notable footballers in Nigeria, Victor Osimhen came from a low-income family background. Before he was born, his parents decided to relocate to Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria. Even while at Lagos, the family faced hardship, one which was so biting that little Victor, then a toddler, was made to face the scorching sun in Lagos traffic where the mother used to sell sachet water to supplement her paltry income.

Victor Osimhen grew up alongside his brother Andrew and four other siblings in Olusosun, a small community around Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos. This community accommodates one of the largest dumpsites in Africa. Growing up in his formative years, Victor Osimhen hustled and hawked sachet water and other household commodities on the streets to raise funds for his education and family survival.

The future of Victor Osimhen was once thrown into confusion following a family crisis over his transfer. Members of his family were against one another over who should represent the player.

According to online reports, Osimhen’s uncle, Michael, once lead a faction of agents while Andrew, his elder arrowhead of the other group. Both groups had their agents who fought over transfer monies and the authentic rights to represent the player. The family crisis got a new dimension when reports also emerged in the media that thugs beat the Osimhen’s father over his refusal to endorse the player’s move to Wolfsburg. It was later de-bunked to be false. It took sometime before the family crisis ended.

Victor Osimhen, who happens to be the breadwinner of his family, is glad to have forged his family’s path toward financial independence, all thanks to football. All family members (as observed below) who stood by him during his dark moments are presently enjoying the full dividends which professional football brings.

Elder Patrick Osimhen is the sole surviving parent and biological father of Victor Osimhen. He was once the manager of his son until 2015 when he handed over the management’s responsibility to French agent Oliver Noah of Noga Sports Management.

When Patrick Osimhen was the legal guardian of his son, he ran into issues with other agents trying to bypass him to earn monies from his son’s transfer to Wolfsburg. While trying to bypass him, these sets of persons preferred to deal with his first son, Andrew Osimhen, over contract negotiations for Victor Osimhen.

According to reports, it appears the mother of Victor Osimhen’s is late. As at the time of writing, the Nigerian striker honors his mother by having her photo as his profile image on his Instagram account.

Victor’s love for his siblings has no bounds that he once dedicated his Golden Boot Award to one of his sisters after she gave birth to a baby girl just when he won the award, around November 2015.

Origin EDUCATION

Olusosun Primary School, which he attended, served as the football meeting point for all school pupils and youngsters in the community.

Every evening, many boys, including Victor, go to the footballing field to watch his elder brother, a local football star in the community.

The firstborn of their family, whose name is Andrew, abandoned his education to earn monies to take care of Victor and his other siblings.

Aides hawking, Victor, also learned to play football thanks to his elder brother, Andrew.

He was also passionate about Chelsea FC as he watched the team play in viewing centers. Together with members of his family members, he was a huge fan of the Nigerian team (Super Eagles). The support for the team and his passion for playing the sport created the desire to become a professional.

Seeing that his little brother was more talented, Andrew had to abandon the game to face his newspaper business. He also threw away the idea of furthering his education to raise money to help his little brother, who he envisaged to be a superstar.

RISE OF VICTOR OSIMHEN

It took no time before the family’s dream began to pay off as local football scouts noticed something special about Victor and then invited him to Ulitmate Strikers Academy in Lagos, where he had his first successful trial.

In the year 2014, Victor Osimhen’s performance with Ultimate Strikers saw him getting invited by coach Amuneke to represent his country U-17 team. He was instrumental in helping the team qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which was held in Chile.

Even before the tournament kicked off in Chile, Osimhen was touted as a favorite to win the Adidas Golden Ball, having scored 39 goals in 71 outings for his country at that point, and finished as top scorer at the U-17 African Championship in March.

The striker, who names Côte d’Ivoire forward Didier Drogba as his role model, more than lived up to Chile’s expectations after finding the net in all seven games at the competition.

Osimhen put his side 1-0 up on four occasions. His effort in the final – his tenth goal overall – set a new tournament record, beating the previous best mark set by Côte d’Ivoire’s Souleymane Coulibaly in 2011 and France’s Florent Sinama Pongolle in 2001.

Osimhen duly finished as top scorer in South America, and would doubtless not begrudge his team captain, of all players, pipping him to what would have been a second golden award.

How much does Victor Osimhen cost?

After the World Cup, it was revealed that big clubs from Europe, Arsenal, Man City, and Tottenham Hotspur were after his services. Shockingly, Victor Osimhen rejected all offers because another middle-weight club had offered him the biggest money.

Moments after he was named the 2015 African Youth Player of the Year at the CAF Awards in Abuja in January 2016, Osimhen announced that he would be pursuing his professional career with the German Bundesliga club, Wolfsburg.

According to him, the club’s assurances plus monies was more of a morale booster for his family and that he prefers playing for the German club rather any top in Europe.

Victor was transferred from his local club in Lagos, Ultimate Striker Academy, to the 2009 Bundesliga winner for $3,970,225 (₦1.4 billion). The transfer fee made him one of the most expensive players to be signed directly from a nursery team in Africa to a top European team.

Osimhen signed a three-and-a-half-year pre-contract deal until June 2020 and made his debut in the German top-flight in May 2017. Just after four months of making his Bundesliga debut, troubles began to loom for the Nigerian. A shoulder injury made him go into surgery, which brought a premature end to his first season. Finishing at this poor level, Victor Osimhen became so unmarketable by the top club.

Osimhen nightmares continued after his recovery from his shoulder injury. This time, it was the sickness that took over, making him miss pre-season and most painfully, missing out on Nigeria’s 2018 world cup selections as he was in the hospital at the tournament in Russia.

Is Victor Osimhen good?

It took Osimhen about two painful seasons to come out of his nightmares. The inconsistency due to injury and sickness saw him scoring zero (0) goals at Wolfsburg, thereby ruining his career.

Moving on, Osimhen made up his mind to attend summer trials with Belgian clubs Zulte Waregem and Club Brugge, who at that time were the reigning champions. AGAIN, his health hit rock bottom as he fell sick of malaria, which affected his physical condition and made both clubs to reject him.

On 22 August 2018, Belgian club Charleroi accepted him on a season-long loan deal. Victor Osimhen made his full debut on 22 September, scoring his first goal as a backheel professional. After the game, Osimhen told BBC Sport that he had “found his happiness again after such a long wait.”

The patient Nigerian had a successful spell with the Belgian side, playing 36 games and scoring 20 goals, a feat which made his club, Charleroi, activating their option to acquire him while on loan. After dominating football in Belgium, the Nigerian felt it was the right time to climb his way back as a leading African striker, which he once was. In July 2019, he made an upward move in his career by signing for Lille OSC.

Despite being a reported target of several European clubs, French Ligue 1 club Lille confirmed the transfer of Osimhen on 1 August 2019, signing a five-year contract. The transfer fee was reported to be priced at €12 million plus another €3m in various bonuses and add-ons. Upon his arrival, he told the club's official website: "Lille is a very good club which has a quality project and high-class players, and especially these last years. Great Nigerian players ( Peter Odemwingie and Vincent Enyeama ) have also played here." Osimhen was given the number 7, which was previously worn by Rafael Leão.

Ten days after the move, he made his Ligue 1 debut for the club on 11 August, scoring a brace in a 2–1 win against Nantes. Two weeks later, he scored another brace in a 3–0 home win against Saint-Étienne for his third game in France, his performance earning him a rating of 8/10 in French sports newspaper L'Équipe .

Osimhen was named the Ligue 1 Player of the Month for September 2019, having scored two goals and assisted two more in Lille's five league matches. He then scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League on 2 October 2019, coming in a 1–2 home defeat to English side Chelsea . In March, a report published by the league showed that Osimhen was the player who has most broken the 35 km/h (21.75 mph) barrier with seven sprints above this speed, ahead of Kylian Mbappé . The Nigerian finished the season as Lille's top scorer, with 13 goals in 25 domestic championship matches, and 18 goals across all competitions.

His good season and strong goalscoring performances earned him the 2020 Prix Marc-Vivien Foé, a prize awarded to the best African player in the French championship, and saw Osimhen tipped by many to be in running for the African Footballer of the Year award in the near future. On 2 June 2020, he was awarded Lille's Player of the Season, having secured the highest number of votes from fans.

On 31 July 2020, Serie A club Napoli announced the signing of Osimhen, for a club-record fee of €70 million potentially rising to €80 million with add-ons, making him the most expensive African transfer to date. On 17 October, Osimhen scored his first goal for Napoli in a 4–1 win against Atalanta . Upon scoring, he held up a shirt calling for the ending of the ongoing police brutality in his home country of Nigeria.

On 13 November, during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game played whilst on international break with Nigeria, Osimhen was stretchered off injured. This was then diagnosed as a shoulder injury that would keep Osimhen away from the playing field for two months.

While recovering from the injury, Osimhen was authorized by his club to spend time in his home country, where he got a chance to celebrate his birthday. It was during these birthday celebrations that it is believed Osimhen contracted the COVID-19 virus, as he tested positive upon returning to Naples. This positive test, together with his shoulder injury, kept Osimhen away from action until his return to the side on 29 January 2021, when he was subbed on for around twenty minutes of Napoli's Coppa Italia win against Spezia .

On 16 September 2021, Osimhen scored a brace in a 2–2 away draw against Leicester City in the Europa League group stage. In November 2021, Osimhen suffered a horrific head injury and a fractured skull and eye socket in Napoli's 3–2 loss to Inter Milan at San Siro . He underwent immediate surgery and was forced to miss the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. He has been wearing a protective mask since and by the end of the season, he scored 14 goals in Serie A and 18 in all competitions.

On 12 October 2022, Osimhen scored his first Champions League goal with Napoli in a 4–2 win over Ajax , which secured their qualification to the knockout phase. On 29 October, he scored his first Serie A hat-trick in a 4–0 win over Sassuolo . On 11 November, he scored a goal and assisted another to help Napoli win 2–1 at Atalanta, becoming Nigeria's highest goal scorer in the Italian Serie A with 32 goals, and surpassing Simy's record of 31.

On 13 January 2023, Osimhen scored two and assisted another as Napoli beat Juventus 5–1. On 17 February 2023, he scored his 100th career goal to help Napoli win 2–0 at Sassuolo. He also became the first ever player in the history of Napoli in the three-point era to score in seven league games in a row. In the Champions League round of 16, Osimhen scored three goals over two legs for Napoli against Eintracht Frankfurt , which ended in a 5–0 win on aggregate and a first-time qualification to the quarter-finals.

On 4 May, he scored the equaliser in a 1–1 draw with Udinese , confirming Napoli as Serie A champions for the first time in 33 years. His goal made him the joint-highest goalscoring African in the Serie A alongside George Weah and the African player with the most goals in a single Italian championship season, breaking Samuel Eto'o 's record in the process. Three days later, he scored the winning goal from a penalty in a 1–0 victory over Fiorentina , to become the highest scoring African player in Serie A with 47 goals, overtaking Weah's record. He finished the season as top scorer with 26 goals, to be the first African to achieve this feat.

Osimhen was a member of the Nigeria under-17 team that won the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. He scored 10 goals in seven games at the tournament and won the Golden Boot and Silver Ball awards. His performances also earned him the CAF Youth Player of the Year award in 2015.

Osimhen made his official senior debut for Nigeria in a 2–0 defeat against South Africa on 10 June 2017. He missed out on Nigeria's 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign after his inconsistent season at Wolfsburg. Following a successful start to his loan spell at Charleroi, he was recalled by Gernot Rohr for the November 2018 international break, starting their friendly win over Uganda .

In March 2019, Osimhen was released from the Super Eagles squad to represent the Nigerian U23 side as they were two goals down against their Libyan opponent. He scored three goals in the return match against Libya in Asaba.

Osimhen was listed in coach Gernot Rohr's 25-man provisional list for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt and was further listed in the final list for the tournament. In the match for third place, he replaced the injured Odion Ighalo at half-time in the team's 1–0 victory over Tunisia . He played a total of 45 mins at the tournament.

The Super Eagles ended the 2021 AFCON qualifiers on a high, beating Lesotho 3–0. However, Osimhen missed the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations supposedly due to COVID‑19 as claimed by his club. This claim provoked a response from a sport lawyer in Nigeria who wrote to express his dismay to the alleged intention of Osimhen's club side, Napoli, to deprive Nigeria the services of their star striker. The Napoli owner, Aurelio De Laurentiis, angered many Africans, when he said he would no longer sign African players unless they agreed to sign a waiver to not participate in the AFCON.

Osimhen started the qualification for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers in sparkling form helping Nigeria win both of their first two matches. Osimhen netted a goal against Sierra Leone and another four goals in a 10–0 win against São Tomé and Príncipe . Osimhen's super hat-trick, was his first senior international hat-trick for the Super Eagles. In the reverse fixture played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on 10 September 2023, Osimhen scored his second international hat-trick in Nigeria's 6–0 win against São Tomé and Principe, finishing the 2023 AFCON qualifiers as top scorer with 10 goals.

Osimhen is a right-footed centre-forward known for his presence, athleticism, strength, directness, runs into space, eye for goal and linkup play. At 185 cm, he has good holdup play. He also relies on pace to beat opponents.

Osimhen is regarded as one of the best centre-forwards in European football. He has been compared to fellow young strikers Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland , Alexander Isak and Dušan Vlahović . Opta Analyst wrote: "Among that early-prime age group, Victor Osimhen is arguably near the top". His manager at Napoli , Luciano Spalletti , described him as "such a great striker" and "the complete package". In December 2022, Francesco Totti called him "the best striker in Serie A". In January 2023, Romelu Lukaku described him as "the best striker". Fellow Nigerian forward Odion Ighalo hailed him as "the future of Nigerian football". After Osimhen scored in Napoli 's 2-1 win over AS Roma in January 2023, former Brazil and Napoli striker Careca said: "In that goal, I saw something similar to Pele ".

Osimhen has named Didier Drogba as one of his influences.

Osimhen is a Christian . He has stated that he has drawn inspiration from Sadio Mané , who helps his community in Senegal , and has said he wants to help disabled people throughout Africa. Osimhen announced the birth of his first child, a daughter named Haly, born October 2022.

Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen ‘expecting’ Arsenal transfer in ultimate insult to Chelsea

Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Napoli goal machine Victor Osimhen for several months but look set to miss out on his signature.

Arsenal have emerged as contenders to sign the Nigerian international with Mikel Arteta looking to add a new prolific striker to his squad.

His release clause of over £100m was always going to be a stretch for Chelsea amid their need to sell players to balance the books this summer.

It is still a big ask for Arsenal but they are not as hamstrung by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules as their London rivals.

Benjamin Sesko is understood to be the Gunners’ top striker target but could be tempted if the opportunity to sign Osimhen presents itself.

He fired Napoli to the Serie A title in 2022/23 by scoring an incredible 26 league goals – before netting 15 in an injury-disrupted 2023/24.

Osimhen undoubtedly has the quality to turn Arsenal into serial trophy winners and a fresh report claims he’d love to make the switch to the Emirates.

Victor Osimhen wants to join Arsenal

According to Italian outlet  Gazzetta dello Sport ,  Osimhen is ‘expecting’ Arsenal to make an offer for him in this summer’s transfer window.

Unlike Chelsea, the North Londoners are yet to make any concrete enquiries into the Napoli star’s availability but have been linked with him for many months.

As mentioned, Napoli are demanding that his release clause is paid in full but the report stunningly claims that he definitely ‘will not’ be playing for the Italian side in the coming season.

That is because his annual wage is set to rise to an astounding €10m (£8.5m – £160,000 per week) which would ‘create problems in the club’s wage bill.’

Osimhen and his agents are trying to weigh up the best next club for him and he is reportedly ‘open’ to ‘welcome offers’ from Saudi Arabia should they have the ‘adequate resources’ to match his contract demands.

A move to Arsenal would be ‘ideal’ however and it will be interesting to see whether they launch a bid for him in the coming weeks.

Osimhen could be brought in as a replacement for Eddie Nketiah who has been informed by the Gunners’ hierarchy that he is free to find a new club.

Whether or not they’d be willing to splash over £100m on Osimhen, however, remains to be seen.

Chelsea close in on centre-back signing and have two wingers in their sights

Chelsea are about to sign a new centre-back with the free transfer of Tosin Adarabioyo. A verbal agreement has been reached, and documents will be signed next week after his medical tests if everything goes to plan.

Newcastle were close to signing the defender, who is a free agent after deciding to leave Fulham, but the deal was never done. They were one step away, but it was never a done deal in terms of things being signed, it was just advanced talks. Chelsea have been able to convince him on their long term project, the vision, and Enzo Maresca’s ideas were also shared during their conversations.

So, Adarabioyo has accepted their proposal as deal will be completed next week. It looks like smart business by Chelsea, in my opinion, as they sign a proven Premier League player on a free, someone with experience but not old, so a good long-term option and a smart first signing for new manager Enzo Maresca. There was interest from a lot of other clubs, not just Newcastle – back in January AC Milan were also showing an interest, and also other clubs around Europe.

Chelsea are also internally discussing the goalkeeper position, and also deciding if they maybe want another centre-back, as well as a central striker. I can also say that a new winger is a possibility, and it may be worth returning on the Michael Olise case in the next days, because he’s a player appreciated by Chelsea for sure. But I can also say that Chelsea have been closely monitoring Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville has just had a fantastic season in the Championship, with Leeds unlucky in their race for promotion as they lost the playoff final to Southampton, and now Summerville is expected to change clubs this summer. Two clubs have been monitoring him more than others, and they are Chelsea and Liverpool.

biography of victor osimhen

The interest is really concrete from these two clubs – let’s see what they decide to do in terms of negotiations because we are not yet at that stage, and let’s see if other clubs decide to join the race, but for sure Summerville looks like one to watch for Chelsea and Liverpool.

Newcastle should still sign Lloyd Kelly, but could star leave for Liverpool?

As I said, while it was never quite a done deal for Newcastle to sign Tosin Adarabioyo, it was pretty advanced, so that’s a blow for them, but what about their other top target Lloyd Kelly, who is leaving Bournemouth also as a free agent?

Newcastle remain set to sign Kelly – I’m told nothing crazy can happen on that deal, he will be a Newcastle player. With Adarabioyo, the Chelsea hijack has been completed, but I wouldn’t expect anything similar to happen on the Kelly to Newcastle deal.

Another Newcastle story I’ve had some fans asking me about is the situation with Anthony Gordon. He’s been linked with Liverpool by some outlets and I’m aware that we also keep hearing about Newcastle needing to sell some star names because of Financial Fair Play.

However, as of now I’m not aware of Newcastle considering to sell Gordon. I don’t have this info, let’s see if the situation changes in the next weeks but Newcastle have not made any decision on Gordon exit so far.

Arsenal back in for Victor Osimhen? Plus truth on Johan Bakayoko’s future

As I’ve previously reported, Chelsea are not working on a deal for Victor Osimhen this summer, and there will be no swap deal with Napoli involving Romelu Lukaku. We’re now seeing Arsenal linked with Osimhen again and this has understandably got a lot of fans talking.

However, on Arsenal, every day we have a new striker close in the media – one day it’s Brian Brobbey, one day Benjamin Sesko, one day Alexander Isak, one day Osimhen, The truth is that they are still assessing options internally, so we have to let them work and then we’ll see. I’ll keep you posted as soon as something concrete happens.

Arsenal have also been linked with Johan Bakayoko of PSV in the Dutch media. For now I’m told there are many clubs keen on Bakayoko, but so far nothing is advanced with any particular club. For example there’s interest also from Germany, but from England too…it’s an open situation, but one to develop in the next weeks rather than now.

Erik ten Hag yet to receive formal communication from Man Utd, and permanent Jadon Sancho transfer looks difficult for Dortmund

There have been really important meetings at Manchester United this week as they hold their internal review over the season and over the future of manager Erik ten Hag. But it’s also about the summer transfer window, the transfer budget, the Financial Fair Play situation, and also the injury situation after a difficult season with too many injuries.

With Ten Hag, my understanding is that the Dutch coach and his agents are still waiting for formal communication from Manchester United to understand the club’s position. We’re still waiting for confirmation on their position and we could hear this in the next days as we’re entering into the moment for the final decision. The board is involved, Ten Hag is waiting, the players are waiting – we’re entering into the really crucial stages on this.

biography of victor osimhen

After that, United will plan for the summer transfer window – as I’ve already mentioned, they could sign one centre-back or maybe two, with Raphael Varane leaving. Discussions are ongoing internally, and many managers are waiting as there could be an opportunity there. As I already told you, Thomas Tuchel would be super keen on the job as he’d love another opportunity in the Premier League, but also other managers could be keeping an eye on it as there are crucial days ahead on this story.

Another important situation to watch will be with Jadon Sancho. Borussia Dortmund will talk to Man United in the next days about Sancho, and then we’ll have to see how talks and meetings will go. For sure Borussia Dortmund can’t spend crazy money; but they want to try to keep Sancho as he’s happy at the club, while United’s priority remains a permanent sale, for sure.
