3 Books Every Eminem Fan Should Read

Marshall Mathers, better known as Eminem , became an unlikely hitmaker in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His brand of brash yet infectious rap captivated and enraged listeners, unexpectedly launching him into stardom.

As his alter ego, “Slim Shady,” Mathers pushed the limits, often using offensive language and unfiltered references to sex, violence, and drug use. Although his early music often featured dark themes and imagery, he became one of the best-selling artists of the new millennium. Songs like “Stan,” “Without Me,” and “Lose Yourself” have become trademark hits and directly influenced new generations of rap artists.

Since he first broke into the mainstream more than two decades ago, Eminem has gone through many eras of personal and creative evolution. As of 2023, he has released eleven studio albums, broken dozens of sales records, collaborated with everyone from Beyonce to Ed Sheeran , and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. 

Although Eminem’s career isn’t finished yet, there is still much to be learned from what he’s accomplished so far. These books offer a new perspective on hit rapper Eminem’s life, art, and unlikely path to stardom.

1. Not Afraid: The Evolution of Eminem

Music journalist Anthony Bozza follows his 2003 biography  Whatever You Say I Am: The Life and Times of Eminem  with this captivating read. Released in 2020,  Not Afraid: The Evolution of Eminem  captures the rapper’s turbulent journey through the years. Through revealing interviews with those closest to Mathers, Bozza crafts a poetic and powerful picture of Eminem’s life and career so far.

2. The Way I Am

Eminem offers fans a visually-driven firsthand account of his rise to fame with his 2019 book,  The Way I Am . Comprised of more than 200 personal photographs, lyric sheets, and personal reflections from the man himself, the best-selling book offers raw reflections and commentary on his personal life, creative process, and headline-making controversies.

3. My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem

Although it may be a controversial pick for some fans,  My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem  offers an important piece of the rapper’s story. This 2008 memoir from Mathers’ mom, Debbie Nelson, offers her version of their rocky relationship through the years. Her recollections starkly contrast the rapper’s memories of his childhood, which she directly disputes in the book. It’s a read best enjoyed with a grain of salt but one that’s still worth your time.

“Houdini” is the lead single of Eminem’s twelfth studio album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) . The track is named after Harry Houdini , a popular magician known for his death-defying stunts like the Chinese Water Torture Cell, which Eminem replicates in the intro to his 1999 track, “Role Model.”

With the return of long-time collaborator Jeff Bass of the Bass Brothers , Eminem revisits his catchy albeit morbid sound of the early 2000s. This fanfare track sees him callback to his old catchphrases such as Shady’s iconic “Guess who’s back?” line from the 2002 track “Without Me.” The song heavily samples and interpolates the Steve Miller Band ’s 1982 track “Abracadabra.”

On October 24, 1926, the legendary Houdini tragically passed away in Detroit, Michigan at the age of 52. Interestingly, Detroit is also the hometown of Eminem, who turns 52 in October 2024.

The single was first teased by Eminem on May 20, 2024, when he posted a teaser to his social media accounts with a text message from “All Contacts” stating, “…and for my last trick!” The text message also has the date of May 31, sparking rumors of Eminem releasing music on that day.

On May 28, 2024, Eminem posted a video to Instagram of him on a FaceTime call with magician David Blaine . At the end of the video, he announced the release of “Houdini” on May 31, then closed out by stating “for my last trick, I’m gonna make my career disappear,” hinting at The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) being his final album.

For the artwork of “Houdini,” Mike Saputo revisits his hand drawn art style previously seen in his cover for Curtain Call 2 .

Carrying on the theme of magic, Saputo draws direct inspiration from the demons and font-color seen on Thurston, The Great Magician ’s promotional poster captioned “Do the Spirits Come Back?”

More inspiration for the font was taken from a poster of Houdini’s act when he broke free from handcuffs.

It’s been typical of Eminem to take advantage of pornstars in his music videos. Ryan Keely and Samantha Mack are two former posnstars who starred in the Houdini’s music video. But also we can mention appearance of some other porsnstars like Sasha Grey, Lisa Ann, Gina Lynn and Jenna Jameson respectively in Space Bound , We Made You , Superman and Without Me music videos.

A Very Private School: A Memoir

Princess Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, pens a memoir that focuses on his time at Maidwell Hall boarding school. "I spent five years of my childhood in this school, trying to crack the code by which it lived. Now, forty-five years on, I think I’m finally there. I’m writing this book before my memories of half a century ago tip over into that chasm of forgetfulness that shadows old age," Spencer said in a statement. More on his memoir, here.

Once a King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII

Prince Harry wasn't the first member of the House of Windsor to write his memoirs . In fact, decades ago, the former King Edward VIII—who abdicated the throne and became the Duke of Windsor—published his memoir, A King's Story , working with ghostwriter Charles Murphy. Author Jane Marguerite Tippett discovered Murphy's notes, including an early draft of the memoir, and offers new insight into Edward and his decision to abdicate in her book Once a King . The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy

Robert Hardman's new biography takes readers inside the first year of Charles's reign, from September 2022 to 2023. It's an "authoritative" but not authorized biography. "I've been allowed into the royal archives to look at some of the files," he told T&C . "I have been allowed to look at the details on [Queen Elizabeth's] coronation, which has been very useful in comparing it to the coronation we've just seen. I've spoken to the current Prime Minister, the previous Prime Minister. I spoke to various members of the King's family, Queen Camilla's family, staff—past and present." Young Elizabeth: Elizabeth I and Her Perilous Path to the Crown

In Young Elizabeth, Nicola Tallis, a PhD-holding historian and royal expert, dives into the early life of the famed Queen Elizabeth I. "It is little wonder that to writers, historians, novelists and the like, the lure of Elizabeth is irresistible, and I am no exception," Tallis writes in the introduction. "In many ways it is surprising that my attempt to untangle part of her story has taken so long, for thanks to my mother's careful history lessons during childhood, I have been captivated by her—and surrounded by her—since I was very young." It's the first new biography of Elizabeth in over twenty years, and it focuses on her tumultuous journey to the throne—including the death of her mother, Anne Boleyn, and her imprisonment in the Tower of London after a plot to overthrow her half-sister-Mary. Consider it a must-read for anyone who is fascinated by the Tudors.

Power and Glory: Elizabeth II and the Rebirth of Royalty

Alexander Larman's Power and Glory is a history that focuses in on the start of the new Elizabethan age, as Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne following the death of her father, King George VI. It's actually the third book in a series focusing on the royal family: The first, The Crown in Crisis: Countdown to the Abdication , goes in depth on the abdication while the second, The Windsors at War: The King, His Brother, and a Family Divided , focuses on the royal family during World War II. Power and Glory is a fitting close to the trilogy.

The Unlikely Duke

This is a royal-adjacent book, but we're counting it anyway: Harry Beaufort, the 12th Duke of Beaufort, inherited his Dukedom in 2017. His memoir, The Unlikely Duke , takes readers throughout his life, which includes people watching with Queen Elizabeth from a balcony at Windsor Castle. He was inspired to write his memoirs when on vacation in Mustique with Lady Anne Glenconner , a former lady-in-waiting for Queen Elizabeth II and close friend of Princess Margaret, who published her memoir to great success.

Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen

To be published August 6, 2024

Robert Jobson's new biography of Kate Middleton looks at her life from childhood through her role as Princess of Wales. "Behind that sparkling public smile is a strong-willed woman with a sharp intellect and a tenacious resolve," Jobson said in a statement when the book was announced. "Someday, this middle-class Berkshire girl, will become King William V’s consort, arguably becoming the first true queen of the people, from the people. I’m really pleased to... bring Catherine’s story to light."

The Royal Palaces: Secrets and Scandals

To be published August 20, 2024

Royal historian Kate Williams—who hosted the Secrets of the Royal Palaces TV show on PBS—teamed up with illustrator James Oses for this fun look into 30 palaces, castles, and British royal residences. She writes about famous spots like Hatfield House, where a young Elizabeth I held court before she was Queen; Glamis Castle , the inspiration for Shakespeare's Macbeth ; Frogmore House , a royal residence used by Queen Charlotte and others; and Windsor Castle , Queen Elizabeth's final residence.

Lady Pamela was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth; she was also the daughter of the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma and a first cousin of Prince Philip, and was present for so many key moments in royal history, including Elizabeth's wedding and coronation. Per the publisher, Lady Pamela is "for lovers of history, royal watchers, and all style enthusiasts."

Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life

Kate Middleton's younger brother is writing a memoir. Meet Ella , named for his beloved dog, will be published this fall. In the announcement of his memoir, James wrote, "I credit Ella to saving my life when I was eclipsed with Clinical depression, she introduced me to my wife, gave me purpose and loved me unconditionally. I know many of you have your own Ella’s [sic] or might be in need of one now and I hope this book will also help us to talk more openly about our mental health, our need for connection, and the way in which the animals that we think we are taking care are always looking after us in return." Cooking and the Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III [A Cookbook]

To be published October 22, 2024

Queen Camilla's son, Tom Parker Bowles , is publishing a royal cookbook this year, featuring recipes from the royal kitchens. "As a food history geek, I cannot tell you how exciting it has been to write this book," Parker Bowles said in a statement. "To read original recipes in the royal archive in Windsor, and disappear into the lives and reigns (and eating habits) of sovereigns from Queen Victoria onwards. But this is not about roast cygnet, ortolans and snipe stuffed with foie gras – rather a proper cookbook, filled with recipes that I’ve loved cooking. And hope that you will too." Thorns, Lust, and Glory: The Betrayal of Anne Boleyn

To be published November 12, 2024

A new biography of Anne Boleyn is coming this November, from historian Estelle Paranque, author of Blood, Fire & Gold: The Story of Elizabeth I & Catherine de Medici . Per the publisher, "How did this courtier's daughter become the queen of England, and what was it that really tore apart this illustrious marriage, making her the whore of England, an abandoned woman executed on the scaffold?" Paranque's Thorns, Lust, and Glory purports to have the answers—and sets out to understand the "origins of her tragic fate." Count us intrigued.

In the late 1980s, Blondie stars Debbie Harry and Chris Stein were dining at a fancy Times Square restaurant with Iggy Pop when Jean-Michel Basquiat walked in with a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Basquiat pulled out some weed and began rolling a joint when Iggy, of all people, asked him to stop.

As Stein writes in his new memoir, “Under a Rock,” (St. Martin’s Press, out June 11), Basquiat became “performatively annoyed and started a beef with Iggy,” which Stein found hilarious.

“Iggy arguing for the rule of law was somewhat absurd,” Stein writes, noting that the two yelled at each other before Basquiat acquiesced.

Stein and Harry began dating in 1973, when they played in The Stilettoes.

They formed Blondie, named after a trucker’s cat-call of Harry, the following year.

When they opened for Iggy Pop, David Bowie served as Iggy’s keyboardist.

While Stein and Harry were famously a couple, this didn’t stop Bowie to casually ask Harry, “Can I f*** you?” She merely replied, “I don’t know, can you?”

More dangerously weird were their interactions with music legend Phil Spector, who they visited at his mansion in Alhambra, CA. 

“Phil came to the door with a bottle of Manischewitz wine in one hand and a presumably loaded model 1911 .45 automatic in the other,” Stein writes.

Spector and Harry sang a few Ronettes songs; then Spector “stuck the .45 into the top of Harry’s right boot and said, ‘Bang, bang!’ which he obviously thought was hysterically funny.”

While Stein wrestled with addiction for years, a sense of rock and roll weirdness permeated his life even when he was clean.

During his first time at Burning Man, in 2000, he was so unprepared for the desert that he cut arm holes in a sleeping bag and wore it as clothing.

Walking into a makeshift Burning Man radio station in his sleeping bag attire, he was asked if he had anything he wanted to say on the air.

“I said, ‘Can I plug my band?’” Stein writes.

“The DJ asked what band and when I said Blondie they thought I was crazy and threw us out.”

The daughter of Yeoh Kian Teik, a lawyer, and Janet Yeoh, a housewife, Yeoh enjoyed an active upbringing that nurtured her competitive instincts: Along with her lessons in ballet and piano, Yeoh participated in basketball, swimming, and rugby, and was a junior squash champion.

Yeoh moved to England at age 15 to continue her ballet training at London’s Royal Academy of Dance, with hopes of pursuing a career as a ballerine and one day opening her own dance studio. Unfortunately, a back injury derailed her hopes of a performance career.

After returning to her home country, Yeoh entered and won the Miss Malaysia competition in 1983. A friend recommended Yeoh to Hong Kong businessman Dickson Poon , who needed last-minute talent for a TV advertisement, at dinner one night. Yeoh got on a plane to meet with Poon, and the next day she filmed a wristwatch commercial with actor Jackie Chan .

Initially billed as the ethnically ambiguous “Michelle Khan,” Yeoh made her big-screen debut as a “damsel in distress” in The Owl vs. Bumbo (1984). Intrigued by its fighting sequences, she immersed herself in intensive martial arts training and followed up with a lead butt-kicking role in Yes, Madam! (1985).

Despite lacking formal martial arts training, Yeoh’s dance training and flexibility helped her transition seamlessly into martial arts roles. She worked out eight hours a day at a gym to prepare for the part on Yes, Madam! , and although initially regarded as “just” a dancer, she learned martial arts moves on the set from instructors and choreographers and did as many of her own stunts as possible.

Yeoh delivered another impressive physical performance with films like In the Line of Duty (1986) , Easy Money (1987), and Magnificent Warriors (1987). She continued performing dangerous stunts in her subsequent films, dislocating her shoulder during the filming of Royal Warriors (1986) when she was kicked by a colleague. One of her early standout roles was in Magnificent Warriors (1987), in which she displays complex martial arts moves, wields a whip, and fires a mounted machine gun.

Yeoh returned from an acting sabbatical as an Interpol inspector alongside Jackie Chan in Police Story 3: Supercop (1992). The film boasted some of her most memorable and dangerous stunts, including a scene in which she jumped a motorcycle onto the top of a moving train. During filming, Yeoh accidentally slipped during a stunt in which she was thrown onto the hood of a moving convertible. A panicked Chan tried to hold onto her from the driver’s seat, but she fell off the car. Yeoh escaped a serious injury, got up, and performed the stunt again .

She then co-starred in The Heroic Trio (1993) and cemented her reputation as an action star with Wing Chu (1994). However, her willingness to perform dangerous stunts caught up with her while filming the aptly named The Stunt Woman (1996), as one misjudged leap left her with a fractured vertebrae and cracked ribs.

Although Supercop was re-released in the United States in 1996, Yeoh truly broke through as an international star—and finally ditched the Khan stage name—with her role in the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies . The first Asian female lead in the long-running franchise, Yeoh broke the usual Bond girl mold by giving Pierce Brosnan’s 007 super-agent a formidable fighting partner.

Yeoh again wowed audiences in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) , which showcased her graceful physical prowess and her dramatic chops as conflicted warrior Yu Shu Lien. The role required Yeoh to learn lines in a difficult older form of Cantonese. She also sustained a torn knee ligament one week into the shooting, requiring complicated surgery that took her away from the set for three months, nearly forcing Lee to replace her with another actor. Yeoh ultimately received a BAFTA nomination for propelling the Oscar-winning film.

After re-teaming with her Crouching Tiger co-star Zhang Ziyi for Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Yeoh branched out with roles in the sci-fi cult favorite Sunshine and the survival epic Far North (2007). A return to her Hong Kong fighting roots with Reign of Assassins (2010) was well-received, as was her decidedly non-combat role of Burmese Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in The Lady (2011).

Yeoh sizzled as steely matriarch Eleanor Young in the box-office smash Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Hollywood’s first all-Asian-headlined production since The Joy Luck Club in 1993. She then played mentor Ying Nan in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), the first Marvel movie to feature an Asian actor (Simu Liu) in the lead role.

Following 30 years of choreographed battles and sweeping dramas on the big screen, Yeoh moved to television in 2015 as a double agent on Cinemax’s Strike Back . She landed a recurring gig on the Netflix historical drama Marco Polo before joining Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 as Captain/Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a role designed to be a spin-off series.

The Malaysian star’s first top-lining credit in Hollywood fittingly came with a role written specifically for her in the genre-defying Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). As embattled laundromat owner Evelyn Wang, Yeoh drew praise for capturing the realistic struggles of an aging immigrant and for displaying varying degrees of martial-arts expertise during the more fantastical segments of the story.

Yeoh received wide praise for her performance and became the first Asian-identifying actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. (Merle Oberon, who was of mixed British and South Asian dissent, had earned a Best Actress nomination in 1935, but she concealed her heritage for fear that discrimination could harm her Hollywood career.) In March 2023, Yeoh won the Oscar , becoming the first Asian woman and second woman of color (after Halle Berry ) to win the coveted Best Actress trophy.

Yeoh has been in a relationship with Jean Todt, a Ferrari racing executive turned International Automobile Federation president and native of France, since 2004. She was previously married to Dickson Poon from 1988 to 1992.

Yeoh was awarded the Malaysian title of Tan Sri in 2013 and Commander of the French Legion of Honour in 2017. The actress also earned Excellence in Asian Cinema honors at the 2013 Asian Film Awards, and in 2020, she was named to both the Time 100 and BBC 100 Women of the Year lists.

Devoted to an array of conservation issues, Yeoh has donated her time as a WildAid ambassador for endangered animals and is a United Nations Development Programme ambassador for sustainable development. She has also been involved with AIDS-related organizations and road safety initiatives.

The actress splits her time between homes in Kuala Lumpur, Geneva, and Paris. She counts food and jewelry among her indulgences (one of her rings makes a prominent appearance in Crazy Rich Asians ) and enjoys horror movies.

WHEN WOMEN RAN FIFTH AVENUE: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion, by Julie Satow

In 1980, Donald J. Trump made the front page of The New York Times after assaulting a pair of scantily clad women at a Fifth Avenue department store .

That the women were made of stone and were attached to the building of Bonwit Teller, in the process of being razed and replaced by Trump Tower , was of little comfort to the trustees at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which had been promised these Art Deco bas-relief beauties — long hovering over pedestrians, now shattered.

The sculptures’ significance was allegorical as well as architectural: Department stores, though erected mostly by men, have always been feminine domains. “The Ladies’ Paradise” is the English title of Émile Zola’s 1883 novel, set at a store modeled after Le Bon Marché, still standing in Paris despite the ravages of e-commerce. Patricia Highsmith framed her 1952 lesbian romance “The Price of Salt” at the fictional Frankenberg’s, based on Bloomingdale’s .

Now Julie Satow has written a group biography of the department-store doyennes who ran the show — and these places in their heyday really were a form of theater — for the male founders and owners whose names adorned the facades.

She nimbly braids together the stories of Hortense Odlum of Bonwit, which moved locations but basically disappeared by 2000; Geraldine Stutz of Henri Bendel, shuttered since 2019 ; and Dorothy Shaver of Lord & Taylor, which after slow decline was delivered a definitive death blow by the pandemic. Cover the stores’ coffins in the faded iconography of their shopping bags: respectively, a spray of violets , brown and white stripes and a single red rose .
