How to Write a Case Study Analysis

When writing a business case study analysis , you must first have a good understanding of the case study . Before you begin the steps below, read the business case carefully, taking notes all the while. It may be necessary to read the case several times to get all of the details and fully grasp the issues facing the group, company, or industry.

As you are reading, do your best to identify key issues, key players, and the most pertinent facts. After you are comfortable with the information, use the following step-by-step instructions (geared toward a single-company analysis) to write your report. To write about an industry, just adapt the steps listed here to discuss the segment as a whole.

Step 1: Investigate the Company’s History and Growth

A company’s past can greatly affect the present and future state of the organization. To begin, investigate the company’s founding, critical incidents, structure, and growth. Create a timeline of events, issues, and achievements. This timeline will come in handy for the next step.

Step 2: Identify Strengths and Weaknesses

Using the information you gathered in step one, continue by examining and making a list of the value creation functions of the company. For example, the company may be weak in product development but strong in marketing. Make a list of problems that have occurred and note the effects they have had on the company. You should also list areas where the company has excelled. Note the effects of these incidents as well.

You're essentially conducting a partial SWOT analysis to get a better understanding of the company's strengths and weaknesses. A SWOT analysis involves documenting things like internal strengths (S) and weaknesses (W) and external opportunities (O) and threats (T).

Step 3: Examine the External Environment

The third step involves identifying opportunities and threats within the company’s external environment. This is where the second part of the SWOT analysis (the O and the T) comes into play. Special items to note include competition within the industry, bargaining powers, and the threat of substitute products. Some examples of opportunities include expansion into new markets or new technology. Some examples of threats include increasing competition and higher interest rates.

Step 4: Analyze Your Findings

Using the information in steps 2 and 3, create an evaluation for this portion of your case study analysis. Compare the strengths and weaknesses within the company to the external threats and opportunities. Determine if the company is in a strong competitive position, and decide if it can continue at its current pace successfully.

Step 5: Identify Corporate-Level Strategy

To identify a company’s corporate-level strategy, identify and evaluate the company’s mission , goals, and actions toward those goals. Analyze the company’s line of business and its subsidiaries and acquisitions. You also want to debate the pros and cons of the company strategy to determine whether or not a change might benefit the company in the short or long term.

Step 6: Identify Business-Level Strategy

Thus far, your case study analysis has identified the company’s corporate-level strategy. To perform a complete analysis, you will need to identify the company’s business-level strategy. (Note: If it is a single business, without multiple companies under one umbrella, and not an industry-wide review, the corporate strategy and the business-level strategy are the same.) For this part, you should identify and analyze each company’s competitive strategy, marketing strategy, costs, and general focus.

Step 7: Analyze Implementations

This portion requires that you identify and analyze the structure and control systems that the company is using to implement its business strategies. Evaluate organizational change, levels of hierarchy, employee rewards, conflicts, and other issues that are important to the company you are analyzing.

Step 8: Make Recommendations

The final part of your case study analysis should include your recommendations for the company. Every recommendation you make should be based on and supported by the context of your analysis. Never share hunches or make a baseless recommendation.

You also want to make sure that your suggested solutions are actually realistic. If the solutions cannot be implemented due to some sort of restraint, they are not realistic enough to make the final cut.

Finally, consider some of the alternative solutions that you considered and rejected. Write down the reasons why these solutions were rejected.

Step 9: Review

Look over your analysis when you have finished writing. Critique your work to make sure every step has been covered. Look for grammatical errors , poor sentence structure, or other things that can be improved. It should be clear, accurate, and professional.

Business Case Study Analysis Tips

Keep these strategic tips in mind:

  • Know the case study backward and forward before you begin your case study analysis.
  • Give yourself enough time to write the case study analysis. You don't want to rush through it.
  • Be honest in your evaluations. Don't let personal issues and opinions cloud your judgment.
  • Be analytical, not descriptive.
  • Proofread your work, and even let a test reader give it a once-over for dropped words or typos that you no longer can see.

The assignments in this course are openly licensed, and are available as-is, or can be modified to suit your students’ needs. Selected answer keys are available to faculty who adopt Waymaker, OHM, or Candela courses with paid support from Lumen Learning. This approach helps us protect the academic integrity of these materials by ensuring they are shared only with authorized and institution-affiliated faculty and staff.

If you import this course into your learning management system (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.), the assignments will automatically be loaded into the assignment tool.

Sun City Boards Assignments and Discussions

Half of the written assignments and discussions are based on a case study, whose focus is a fictional high-end surfboard company, Sun City Boards, which is also highlighted in the Why It Matters and Putting it Together in Module 3: Planning and Mission. Many of these assignments take the form of asking students to give Tom, the company’s inexperienced owner, advice about how he can run his business more effectively. The Sun City Boards assignments create a common framework for applying knowledge and skills developed through the course, encouraging students to demonstrate mastery of the content through real-world tasks and work products.

Alternate Assignments and Discussions

The other half of the written assignments and discussions use a variety of approaches, depending on the subject and learning outcome being assessed; many ask students to go beyond course content to form connections between research topics and what they’ve learned in class.

Using Assignments

We recommend assigning one discussion OR one assignment per chapter, rather than all of them. Some instructors prefer to stick with the Sun City Boards theme throughout the course; others like to use some of the alternates along the way. You can view any assignments or discussions below or throughout the course.

Cambridge igcse business studies (0450).

  • Syllabus overview

The Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies syllabus develops learners' understanding of business activity in the public and private sectors, and the importance of innovation and change. Learners find out how the major types of business organisation are established, financed and run, and how their activities are regulated. Factors influencing business decision-making are also considered, as are the essential values of cooperation and interdependence.

Learners not only study business concepts and techniques but also enhance related skills such as numeracy and enquiry. The syllabus provides both a foundation for further study at Cambridge International A Level and an ideal preparation for the world of work.

The syllabus year refers to the year in which the examination will be taken.

Important notices

Please note that if you make an entry for the A*-G grading scale, it is not then possible to switch to the 9-1 grading scale once the entries deadline has passed. If you find that you have accidentally made an entry for the A*-G syllabus, you must withdraw and re-enter before the entries deadline.

For some subjects, we publish grade descriptions to help understand the level of performance candidates’ grades represent.

We paused the publication of grade descriptions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the temporary changes to the awarding standard in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

As the awarding standard has now returned to the pre-pandemic standard, we are working to produce up-to-date grade descriptions for most of our general qualifications. These will be based on the awarding standards in place from June 2023 onwards.

Application Form

Ready to apply? Start  here . Once your application is complete, you’ll be considered for an interview with one of the core MiM faculty and staff members. Your completed  application  should include a resume, responses to four video essays and unofficial undergraduate transcripts. GMAT or GRE scores are optional. Be sure to look over our admissions checklist for all the details you’ll need. Feel free to contact us with any questions along the way. We want the admissions process to be as simple and transparent as possible. Reach out to the Graduate Admissions & Financial Aid Office at (617) 353-2670 or  [email protected] .

Re-Applicants

The Graduate Admissions & Financial Aid Office keeps all records on file for one year. We welcome your re-application. Each re-applicant is required to submit a new application form and fee ($125); an essay discussing updates or changes since the time of the previous application, as well as reasons for re-applying; an updated resume; university-level transcripts (if the re-applicant has taken new coursework since the time of their first application); and updated GMAT or GRE results (if applicable).

(Optional) GMAT or GRE Results

The Master in Management Studies (MiM) is a hands-on program that attracts a wide variety of students with non-business degrees. While the MiM program curriculum contains quantitative components, we do not require the GMAT or GRE as part of the application. The Admissions Committee reviews applications holistically, meaning that we consider academic performance, writing and communication, leadership and involvement, and many other factors in our evaluation. You will not be penalized in the application review process if you choose to not submit a GMAT/GRE test score.

  • Students are welcome to submit test scores to strengthen their applications, and test scores submitted will be considered in the admission decision process.

For students with a low grade point average, a test score can provide admissions officers with additional information about their potential to succeed in the classroom. If you feel that you do not have sufficient evidence in your previous coursework that demonstrates your true academic aptitude, you may want to consider submitting a GMAT or GRE score to enhance your application.

* The admissions committee may, in rare cases, still ask you to submit a GMAT or GRE score to aid in evaluating your candidacy for the MiM program. In the event we need this additional information, we will inform you once your application has been initially reviewed.  The GMAT/GRE tests are optional for applications to the MiM program.  However, if you do choose to submit a GMAT/GRE please upload an unofficial copy of your score report with your online application.  To learn more about the optional GMAT/GRE, please click  here  or our  FAQ  page.

This allows the committee to see your candid responses. We want your video essay recording process to be as easy as possible. How AI Can Change the Way Your Company Gets Work Done

  • Marc Zao-Sanders

assignment business studies

Using AI to help you carry out tasks better and faster can fuel new growth in your organization.

AI offers many ways to enhance a company’s overall internal capabilities and skills. AI can be used to infer skills from employee profiles and their activity. AI can be used to classify learning content and make it more applicable and accessible for the whole workforce, as well as making learning more personalized to each individual. AI can be used to summarize, recommend, and augment learning content. GenAI, in particular, can be used by the world’s billion knowledge workers to boost performance, right in the flow of work. Research shows that GenAI can get knowledge work done 25% faster and 40% better. This article covers several ways that corporations, teams, and individuals can drive internal growth by enhancing organizational capabilities. Early signs are that double-digit growth via GenAI is eminently possible.

Most growth models and strategies — such as the Ansoff Matrix and McKinsey’s 7S Framework — are focused on external expansion: Grow by launching new products, by entering new markets, and by doing both at once. Yet growth can also come from within, by developing internal  capability.

How ‘Rural Studies’ Is Thinking About the Heartland

What’s the matter with America’s rural voters? Many scholars believe that the question itself is the problem.

Kristin Lunz Trujillo grew up proud of her family’s way of life. She spent summers getting ready to show cattle at the county fair. During the school year, she rushed home after class to feed the chickens on her family’s corn and soybean farm. Neither of her parents went to college, but they encouraged their daughter when she decided to go to Carleton, a liberal arts school a two-hour drive from their farm in Minnesota.

Despite being physically close to home, Ms. Lunz Trujillo was surprised by how foreign her upbringing seemed at the college. She was dismayed when she checked out the farm club and learned that its members wanted to brew kombucha, not milk cows. When an art history teacher asked students which famous paintings they’d seen in person, Ms. Lunz Trujillo stayed quiet, because she had never been to an art museum. This sense of cultural alienation molded her research when she became a political scientist: What is rural identity? How does it shape a person’s politics?

This year, Ms. Lunz Trujillo, now an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina, was reading a new, best-selling book that cited her research to explore those same questions. But this recognition didn’t bring the thrill she might have expected.

Kristin Lunz Trujillo, leaning on a white wooden fence, surrounded by trees.

“It seemed to be more of a hit piece on rural America,” she said.

Published in February, “White Rural Rage,” by the journalist Paul Waldman and the political scientist Tom Schaller, is an unsparing assessment of small-town America. Rural residents, the authors argued, are more likely than city dwellers to excuse political violence, and they pose a threat to American democracy.

Several rural scholars whose research was included in the book immediately denounced it. In a critical Politico essay, Nick Jacobs, a political scientist at Colby College, wrote, “Imagine my surprise when I picked up the book and saw that some of that research was mine.” Ms. Lunz Trujillo excoriated the book in an opinion piece for Newsweek as “a prime example of how intellectuals sow distrust by villainizing” people unlike them.

Supercentenarians who live past 110 have 9 things in common, according to a scientist who studies them

  • There's no one secret to living to 110 like supercentenarians.
  • But supercentenarians tend to share nine traits, a longevity expert says.
  • These include having friends and maintaining a healthy weight.

Insider Today

A supercentenarian expert shared with Business Insider the nine things people who live to 110 and beyond have in common.

Jimmy Lindberg has studied thousands of supercentenarians in her role as a scientific advisor for LongeviQuest , an organization that verifies the ages of the world's oldest people.

Out of the nine traits Lindberg listed, several were out of our control: long-living relatives , being born in the winter months but somewhere warm, and being female (a study from 2015 found that 95% of supercentenarians were women).

It's unsurprising that research also suggests wealth is a factor. The Financial Times reported last year that the poorest Americans were living 50 fewer years than their wealthy counterparts, with their lives more likely to be shortened by exposure to opioid use and gun violence. They also have less financial security and access to medical care.

But Linberg said that "lifestyle is of course a contributor" to a long, healthy life. Here are the factors she shared.

Be resilient

Being resilient and able to endure hard times is one of the key predictors of longevity in supercentenarians, Lindberg says.

"You don't have to be a superendurance athlete or anything like that, but you have to keep going," she said.

A 2023 study by researchers at the Complutense University of Madrid on the traits centenarians tend to share found looking for a silver lining and carrying on in the face of adversity was common.

BI has previously reported on how to build resilience .

Be spiritual

Spirituality, meaning believing in something greater than us, is also very common among the supercentenarians that Lindberg has studied.

This is reflected in research, with one 2016 study by a team at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health finding that women who attended a religious service more than once a week were 33% less likely to die of any cause, potentially because it provided social support and boosted their optimism.

Related stories

Dr. Joseph Maroon , an 84-year-old neurosurgeon and Ironman triathlete, previously told BI he believed spirituality had contributed to his health and longevity as much as diet and fitness.

Maintain a healthy weight

"There haven't really been any obese supercentenarians," Lindberg said. "They tend to maintain a relatively healthy weight throughout their lives."

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of conditions including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney diseases, and liver disease — all of which increase the risk of early death.

One 2022 study published in the journal JAMA Network Open on 29,621 people found that those with a BMI of more than 30, which is considered "obese," lived to 77.7 on average, while people with "normal" or "overweight" BMIs (18.5 to 29.9) lived almost five years longer, to about 82.

BI has previously reported on how to lose weight healthily .

Take steps to prevent chronic disease

Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes, are the leading causes of death and disability in the US, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Whether we develop chronic diseases is partly out of our control because of a range of factors, from our genes to our environment, but there are certain steps we can take to lower our risk.

They include not smoking, eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in sodium and saturated fats, being physically active, and reducing how much alcohol you drink, according to the CDC.

Eating a Mediterranean diet can help reduce the risks of developing chronic disease, as BI previously reported.

Have a strong support network

Multiple studies have found links between maintaining strong social relationships with living longer, including the Harvard Study of Adult Development , an 85-year project that followed three generations to see what kept them healthy and happy.

Dr. Robert Waldinger, the study's lead researcher, previously told BI that healthy relationships had a surprisingly large impact on people's odds of living longer.

And Professor Rose Anne Kenny, a gerontologist at Trinity College Dublin, having good relationships is just as important to longevity as eating well and exercising.

Correction: July 10, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated Dr. Maroon's age. He is 84 not 83.

Watch: Gen Z is receptive to health information, especially in the social channels where they live, says Haleon's CMO

Stockton First in N.J. to Offer Cannabis Undergraduate Degree

cannabis studies

The number of jobs in New Jersey related to cannabis increased 66% from 2023 to 2024 from about 7,400 to about 12,200. The new Bachelor of Science in Hemp and Cannabis Business Management degree will prepare students to help fill that increase.

Galloway, N.J. — Beginning this fall, Stockton University will become the first college or university in New Jersey to offer an undergraduate degree in cannabis studies.

The Bachelor of Science in Hemp and Cannabis Business Management through Stockton’s School of Business will prepare students to join a booming industry that has seen a 66% increase in the number of jobs in New Jersey, according to Stockton Adjunct Professor Rob Mejia.

“This year, New Jersey is on track to sell over $1 billion of cannabis products,” said Mejia, who teaches Cannabis Studies classes. “You have to pay attention to a $1 billion business. Cannabis and hemp being so unique and regulated, you have to have special skills in order to get involved and be successful in the industry.”

In March 2023, the number of cannabis- and hemp-related jobs in New Jersey was about 7,400, according to Vangst, the cannabis industry’s No. 1 job platform. That number jumped to about 12,200 in March 2024 and continues to grow as the state opens new licensing classes in distribution, wholesaling and delivery.

Mejia added that New Jersey’s edible cannabis business — including infused chocolate, beverages and snacks — has just begun to expand, which will lead to an increase in job demand.

This year, New Jersey is on track to sell over $1 billion of cannabis products. You have to pay attention to a $1 billion business. Cannabis and hemp being so unique and regulated, you have to have special skills in order to get involved and be successful in the industry.” Rob Mejia, who teaches Cannabis Studies classes at Stockton

In addition to courses that focus on cannabis cultivation, social justice and cannabis and introduction to medical cannabis, the degree’s core is grounded in strong business classes, such as business policy and strategies, marketing principles and macroeconomics. The degree also builds on Stockton’s existing Cannabis Studies minor , which was introduced in 2018 and has more than 70 graduates.

The experiential learning component of the new degree is one of its strengths, Kleinsmith said, as there are two cannabis field internships offered.

“That part is key because it gives students hands-on experience,” Mejia said. “It also introduces students to employers. We have a very developed pipeline. We’ve placed (Cannabis Studies minors) in the hemp industry, with labs doing cultivation, in processing, in dispensaries, in management, in marketing and working with consultants.”

Cannabis is legal for medical use in 38 of 50 states and for recreational use in 24 states, including New Jersey since 2021. At the federal level, it’s still classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, prohibiting its use for any purpose, but the federal law is generally not enforced where cannabis has been legalized. And in May, the Drug Enforcement Administration formally moved to recategorize cannabis as a Scheduled III drug, which signifies low to moderate risk for dependency and an accepted medical use.

Kleinsmith acknowledged cannabis’ complicated history, but emphasized the university is simply adjusting to the changing needs of businesses in New Jersey by being the first to offer the degree program. He said the design of the degree has come after much discussion with advisory boards, feedback from alumni and people involved with internships through the Cannabis Studies minor.

“We didn’t create the need, we are addressing the need,” he said. “If we don’t address the need, then are we really doing our job as an institution of higher education? If you don’t recognize how things change, you can get caught flat-footed, and your programs can be on the back burner of what people need.”
