• Be truthful. Do not include misleading information to stand out from the competition. Some scholarship committees conduct cross-checking to verify the information indicated in application letters. Get caught and lose your chance to enjoy the grant. 
• Don’t be “too emotional.” It’s true that your letter becomes more convincing if you state your challenges and economic hardships. However, over-relying on “emotional appeal” might repulse your reader. Thus, avoid oversharing private matters in your letter.  Moreover, refrain from adding “rant” statements (e.g., education is for the privileged only, tuition hikes are anti-poor, etc. ) in your letter. There’s a different avenue to express those frustrations.

The U.S. Bank Scholarship Program is a unique way for current students to gain financial literacy while entering to win scholarships. Instead of submitting an essay, college students download an app and complete free lessons on personal finance topics. The scholarship award increases as students complete more modules. For example, students who complete 25+ modules will be entered to win up to $2,500, while students who complete 150+ modules will be entered to win up to $20,000.

Applicants are required to register on the U.S. Bank scholarship site and then follow instructions to download the U.S. Bank version of the Zogo app, where they complete the learning modules. As you complete modules, you’ll be entered to win different scholarship amounts.

The Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship is specifically offered to students who have experienced a loss in their families. The winner is selected based on a 200- to 800-word essay on the topic “How has the loss of a close family member or loved one caused you to focus on what matters most in your life and what you want to ‘fight’ to achieve?”

3. Employment BOOST College Scholarship

Employment BOOST College Scholarships are awarded quarterly to high school students accepted to college and current college students. Employment BOOST offers two awards: one scholarship for students in any major (including those undecided) and one for students majoring in business or STEM.

Applicants must submit a letter of reference and a 500- to 1,000-word essay. The topic of the essay is either a response to an Allen Ginsberg poem or a description of how technology will change the applicant’s way of life in 15 years — the essay topic depends on the applicant’s major. Students must also have a GPA of at least 3.6 to qualify.

Before you start.

You can’t begin the application process until you’ve made a plan. Start by narrowing down your prospective schools. Know where you’re applying, what each application entails and the due dates you need to meet.

Decide About Early Decision

It’s important to determine whether you plan to apply for early decision or early action at any school. As the name implies, early decision often involves an earlier due date for your application.

Early decision comes with perks—admission rates for early-decision applicants tend to be higher, for example, and you learn about your admission decision more quickly—but this method comes with strings attached, too. For example, if you are admitted on early decision, you may have to give your response before learning whether other colleges have also accepted your applications, and you may have to withdraw your applications to other schools.

Get a Jump Start on Standardized Tests

You should prepare for and take the SAT early on since many students take the SAT multiple times. If you plan to take the ACT more than once, consider taking the ACT early on as well. And make sure to sign up for the Common App , which allows you to use a single form to apply to multiple colleges.

Two Months Before College Applications Are Due

A couple of months before your deadlines, things are getting down to the wire. If you’re submitting standardized test scores, it’s time to make sure your results are up to snuff. If you plan to take the ACT , now is the time to do it. And if you weren’t satisfied with your earlier SAT scores , it’s time to retake that test as well.

Four Weeks Before College Applications Are Due

Most undergraduate applications require letters of recommendation , at least one of which must come from an academic source. You could ask a teacher, a school counselor or another faculty member to write your recommendation letter.

Keep in mind that these individuals are busy professionals who may be writing multiple letters of recommendation for other students, so it’s important to give them at least a few weeks to complete this task.

Several Weeks Before Applications Are Due

Not all universities ask applicants to submit essays, but this is a common requirement for many. If you’re applying to schools that require college essays , you’ve probably been working on yours for a while—potentially even as assignments in your English class.

In the weeks leading up to your application deadlines, it’s time to polish up those essays and get them ready for submission. Gather feedback from trusted peers, teachers and mentors, and make edits as necessary. Make sure your essays answer the prompts, comply with word count requirements and are free of grammatical errors.

The Week Before Applications Are Due

At this point in the application process, it’s time to gather all the materials required for your college application. These may include the application forms themselves, preliminary transcripts, test scores and essays. Make sure your letter-writers have finished your recommendation letters as well.

Before, During and After Applying to College

Applying for college and applying for financial aid are separate processes. Before, during and after your college application process, you should be researching scholarships and grants to help you pay for your education.

Unlike student loans, scholarships and grants do not require repayment. These forms of aid may be need-based, merit-based or use other identifying characteristics, like ethnicity or religion. If you qualify for a scholarship or grant, make sure to apply—these awards can add up to make a big difference.

During October

We recommend submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) regardless of whether you think you will qualify for financial aid. The factors determining aid eligibility are complex, so you may qualify for a federal student loan even if it seems unlikely to you. Many states use the FAFSA to determine eligibility for state-level student aid as well. Some aid is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so submitting the application in a timely manner is wise.

Also by October, you should know whether you will be registering to take any AP exams. The College Board usually requires all AP test-takers to register for their exams by November 15, but your high school may impose an earlier deadline for registration. Make sure you know and are on track to meet those deadlines.

By May, you should have received responses for all your college applications. Of the schools that granted you admission, you should have narrowed down your options and decided where you’d like to attend. Now, it’s time to make it official.

During June and July

Scholarships

Scholarships are financial aid awards that can help you pay for college. Sometimes a scholarship comes as a one-time check payment, or it can be renewable for each semester that you're in college. You do not have to repay a scholarship.

With many scholarships, you'll need to maintain minimum requirements to keep your scholarships. Current students can view the Scholarship Renewal Criteria on The Hub. 

State Scholarships 

The S.C. Palmetto Fellows Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded by the S.C. Commission on Higher Education. To receive the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, students must apply through their high school counselor and meet specific academic requirements.

Annual value: up to $6,700 for the first year and $7,500 for subsequent years.

Four-year value: up to $29,200

• Minimum 1100 SAT or 22 ACT test score
• Rank top 30.00 percent of the graduating class
• Graduate from high school with a 3.0 GPA on the S.C. Uniform Grading Scale

Annual value: $5,000 Four-year value: $20,000

Students will automatically be reviewed and awarded the scholarship by the College of Charleston. 

Palmetto Fellows and LIFE Scholarship recipients who are enrolled in certain math and science majors may be eligible for an enhancement award beginning in their second year of enrollment. Students must have completed 14 hours in mathematics, or life or physical science, or any combination of both, during their first year to qualify for this enhancement.

Annual value: up to $2,500 beginning sophomore year Three-year value: up to $7,500

The South Carolina HOPE Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded value at $2,800 and is nonrenewable. A student must be an incoming first-year student with a 3.0 GPA who did not receive either the LIFE Scholarship or Palmetto Fellows.

For eligible students, Palmetto Fellows, LIFE and Enhancement Scholarships can be used over the summer.  Please contact a financial aid counselor to determine eligibility requirements.

The S.C. Teaching Fellows Program is a merit-based program designed to recruit talented high school seniors into the teaching program, and to help them develop leadership qualities.  The South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment administers the Teaching Fellows program. This program should not be confused with the S.C. Teacher Loan.

Annual value:  up to $6,000

Four-year value:  up to $24,000

Institutional Scholarships (First-Year Students) 

Excellence institutional scholarships are awarded to entering first-time, first-year students and are based on demonstrated financial need. To be considered for these awards, students should submit a valid FAFSA by the priority deadline of February 1.

The Colonial Scholarship was established as the College of Charleston’s most prestigious scholarship. Four recipients are selected from the highest qualified students from South Carolina in each first-year student class. The academic credentials of the students at the time of admission, prior academic and community service involvement, and personal interviews with members of the Scholarship Committee are considered in the selection process.

Application

• First-year applicants to the College of Charleston are automatically considered for College of Charleston merit scholarships. We take a holistic approach in our scholarship review process and consider multiple factors when assessing scholarship awards.
• Apply for admission to the College of Charleston by November 1 for maximum consideration of merit- and need-based scholarships.

Eligibility

• First-year student admitted to the College of Charleston
• Enroll full time (12 hours) to be eligible for scholarship funds.

Non-Resident Scholarships

• Non-resident scholarships (both merit-based and need-based) are available to out-of-state students and cover part of the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition. The College of Charleston Academic Scholarship requires that the student remain a College of Charleston Merit Scholar and meet  renewal criteria .

Continued Eligibilty

• Recipients of the College of Charleston Merit Scholarship must maintain a cumulative College of Charleston GPA of 3.0
• Recipients must complete 24 credit hours per academic year (fall, spring and subsequent summer). Earned hours do not include repeat courses, AP, IB, CLEP or Placement hours, or transfer hours from a previous academic year.
• Scholarships are renewed automatically if the student maintains the required academic standards.

The National Merit Scholarship is for students that are National Merit Finalists and list the College of Charleston as their first choice. Students will receive $2,000 per year in addition to any other scholarships the student receives. The College does not require a separate application for this scholarship.

Students receiving the James E. Clyburn/Rudolph Canzater Foundation Scholarship will receive a two-to-one matching scholarship from the College of Charleston. This means that for every $1 in scholarship awards a student receives from the James E. Clyburn/Rudolph Canzater Foundation ,  the College of Charleston will match it with $2.  

All students must enroll full time (12 hours) each semester in order to be eligible for any scholarship funds. This scholarship is renewable. Current students can view scholarship renewal criteria on The Hub. 

Scholarships are offered to two Charleston County residents who have participated in a TRIO program as designated by the U.S. Department of Education and who possess strong academic records. 

All students must enroll full time (12 hours) each semester. This scholarship is renewable.  

DEPARTMENTAL AND OTHER COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON SCHOLARSHIPS

The College of Charleston uses an online scholarship awarding system called the Cougar Scholarship Award System (CSAS) . Through CSAS you can apply for all privately funded scholarships and all departmental scholarships with one easy application.

Outside Scholarships

Outside scholarships are private sources of money offered from non-College of Charleston-affiliated organizations. Outside scholarships sources may include local clubs, businesses, organizations and churches.

Receiving an Outside Scholarship

If you're receiving an outside scholarship, you should ensure that the scholarship check has your College of Charleston Student ID Number (CWID) in the memo line. Checks that are co-payable to you and the College will require your signature after they have been received by the College. We prefer a check and an accompanying letter addressing which semester the check is covering.
