Mills (Adam Driver) agreed to pilot a two year long space voyage for one reason - his daughter. Although the trip will separate them, he needs the money to pay for her medical care. But this trip is going to take longer than either of them expect…

When the ship is damaged as it passes through an uncharted asteroid belt, Mills lands on the nearest available planet, which happens to be Earth. But the Earth Mills crashes on is not one populated by humans. He’s arrived approximately 65 million years too early for us and the denizens of Earth in this era include huge bugs, strange plants…and the massive, terrible lizards we call dinosaurs.

You can really tell this movie was made by Americans. Who else would create a high-tech alien civilization capable of interstellar flight and still make them pay out of pocket for healthcare? Unfortunately, that little sociopolitical quirk isn’t the move’s only issue. Adam Driver is a capable actor, and he is just about the only reason to watch the film, but approximately 80% of his dialogue just consists of heavy mouth breathing to the point that it becomes distracting. Unfortunately, when he’s not on screen we’re either stuck with Koa, who doesn’t speak English (or barely anything else, for that matter), or some really, really, really weird dinosaurs. Somehow, 1993’s Jurassic Park remains the gold standard of dinosaur films, and this film, despite a generation’s worthof computer innovation, can’t even compete. Not least because the dinos still don’t have feathers, despite 30 years of scientific research in between these films indicating that they did. And if you think that feathered dinosaurs couldn’t be scary, I’d advise you to go look at a therizinosaur. Or a cassowary.

The editing in this movie is a real dog’s breakfast, almost literally. I think they edited portions of this film by feeding reels to a dog, and letting its digestive system do the work. (I don’t envy whoever had to recover the film, though.) Scenes either come to an abrupt and jarring end or drag out for a small eternity. This was one of those movies where I was checking my watch almost exactly every eight minutes, which is not an ideal audience experience.

Parents unconcerned by poor editing and dodgy writing might have some issues with the bloody violence in the film, which you should expect when you mix dinosaurs with humans, since we’re basically lunchboxes with legs as far as they’re concerned. There’s also a smattering of scatological profanity, but that’s about all you need to worry about – at least as far as content goes. The premise is interesting, but the execution is an extinction-level mess. In all honesty, I think I would have preferred being hit with a colossal asteroid to watching the film. The asteroid would at least be over sooner. And without quite as much heavy breathing, I hope.

Adam Driver shoots a bunch of dinosaurs like any good father would.

65 Review - IGN Image

Remember 2011’s Cowboys & Aliens ? 65 is a movie that dares to take that same simple idea of a kid smashing two of his favorite toys together and give us Space Dad & Dinosaurs, a breezy sci-fi survival mission that delivers what's on the tin and little more. Writers and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods – who wrote the much fiercer invasion stunner A Quiet Place and pulled double duty on the gruesome yet underwhelming Halloween horror movie Haunt – emphasize ferocious special effects, a fast tempo, and adventurous tension. It’s a straightforward story of a man protecting a child that will someday fit well into syndicated Father's Day marathons on channels like TBS or TNT. Don't expect the next Jurassic Park or even Jurassic World . 65 pleases the most basic expectations, and that's good enough for the entertaining concept to survive for 90 minutes.

Beck and Woods favorably draw from ‘80s and ‘90s action movies centered around a hero whose family-driven motivations are more compelling than another cardboard action-hero cutout trying to beat a body count record. Adam Driver's space pilot Mills survives a white-knuckle crash landing filled with asteroid damage that drops him on Earth 65 million years ago, and it’s not long before dinosaurs start trying to take bites out of the stranded visitor. Adding Ariana Greenblatt's young survivor, Koa — who speaks a different language — creates a fatherhood instinct that drives Mills. Thanks to her, Driver gets to do more than shoot energy bullets at animated dinosaurs, which suits his flair for expressive facial reactions and outbursts. Koa needs Mills' tactical skills, Mills needs Koa's daughter representation, and 65 needs their parent-child dynamic to elevate even a single notch above point-and-shoot generics.

That father-daughter relationship acts like tossing some Hallmark warmth into a prehistoric episode of Survivor (...with futuristic tools [scratches head]). Driver's commitment as an overprotective caretaker shines, while Greenblatt's playful scamp can be a delight. The communication barrier between the two might not add much to the story, nor does their emotional journey go anywhere special, but Driver and Greenblatt mold a sweet relationship together that make it easy to root for Mills and Koa as they overcome separate familial subplots. It’s something like After Earth, but far better.

Visual effects supervisor Chris Harvey led efforts to present lifelike digital dinosaurs and gets plenty of credit for 65's success in that arena. Nothing here will beat the Tyrannosaurus rex or raptor animatronics from the original Jurassic Park (perhaps nothing ever will), but 65 delivers creatures big and small that appear pretty darn polished and worthy of a reported $90 million budget. Harvey's dinos favor menacing reptilian attributes like massive predators running on all fours, like a blend between a T-Rex and Komodo dragon — they're somehow more unsettling by resembling animals we see everyday. Driver and Greenblatt's chemistry when threatened by them sells everything from cautious wonder to fear-stricken danger, especially with some choice cinematography, like when a rainstorm lightning bolt reveals a massive T-rex-type outline behind our worried leads.

What's the best dinosaur movie WITHOUT "Jurassic" in the title?

65 isn’t a non-stop creature feature, though. Beck and Woods balance less-frequent dinosaur attacks with natural obstacles like cave-ins and quicksand, showing an environment where death is one wrong step away. Driver brings intensity, whether challenging razor-clawed predators or exhaustively chipping away at rocks to clear claustrophobic escape tunnels from dank caverns. 65 embraces the wildness of wilderness excursions, and while suspense might subside when dinos vanish for longer stretches of time, there's never too long to wait before Mills and Koa have to defend against another snarling adversary.

What 65 lacks is any ambition toward grander world-building. Beck and Woods' screenplay gives us a glimpse of an advanced cosmic race of humans that arose long before our own, complete with solve-all gadgets that can be too convenient for their own good and interstellar travel. Mills and Koa’s backstories are completely unexplored because 65 is dedicated to being a movie about fleeing from gaping dinosaur jaws and a quest to locate a lost escape pod – but the microscopic focus feels slight and unfulfilling given the setup. Mills' never-quite-emptied blaster (the fact that it recharges itself undermines a fair amount of survival tension) and their holographic GPS tracker are neat devices, but they beg for expanded lore about the people who built them.

65 movie review parents guide

65 is a capable action-thriller with a softer side when it comes to its family-centered survival motivations. That doesn't negate the excitement when Adam Driver must square off with fearsome, great-looking dinosaurs. Writers and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods don't overcomplicate 65 beyond acting on primal instincts, and while that leads to sci-fi storytelling that leaves so much unanswered intrigue on the table, they deliver respectable humans vs. beasts entertainment. 65 has a few oddly cruel moments that hit out of nowhere, which can throw off balance in a way that feels like a family-friendly The Land Before Time movie colliding with the feeding scene in Jurassic World, but it's also a competent 90-minute gauntlet where survivors race against time and extinct foes.

Now streaming on:

You’d think a movie in which Adam Driver fights a bunch of dinosaurs couldn’t possibly be boring, but that’s exactly what “65” is.

This is a movie that would have benefitted from being a whole lot stupider. The big-budget sci-fi flick—which reportedly cost $91 million to make and was featured in a Super Bowl ad—should have embraced its inherent B-movie roots. Instead, it tries to juggle a wild survival story with a poignant family drama, but both elements feel so rushed and underdeveloped that neither ends up registering. There’s nothing to these characters, and the action sequences quickly grow repetitive and wearisome. There’s a jump scare, insistent notes from an overbearing score, some running and screaming, the gnashing of teeth, and maybe an injury before a narrow escape. Over and over and over again.

But the film from the writing-directing team of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods , whose credits include co-writing “ A Quiet Place ” with John Krasinski , offers an intriguingly contradictory premise. It takes place 65 million years ago, but suggests that futuristic civilizations existed back then on planets throughout the universe. On one of them, Driver stars as a space pilot named Mills. He’s about to embark on a two-year exploratory mission in order to afford medical treatment for his ailing daughter ( Chloe Coleman from “ My Spy ,” who’s featured in the film’s prelude and sporadic video snippets).

On the way to his destination, the ship Mills is flying enters an unexpected asteroid field, gets torn to shreds, and crashes. All of the passengers in cryogenic sleep are killed—except one, who just happens to be a girl around the same age as his daughter. Her name is Koa, and she’s played by Ariana Greenblatt . And the planet, which has swampy terrain reminiscent of Dagobah, just happens to be—wait for it—Earth.

“65” requires Mills and Koa to schlep from the wreckage to a mountaintop so they can commandeer the escape pod that’s perched there and fly out before dinosaurs can stomp and chomp on them. The creatures can be startling at times, but at other times they look so cheesy and fake, they’re like the animatronics you’d see at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant. And yet! It almost would have been better—or at least more entertaining—if “65” had leaned harder into that silliness if it had played with the basic ridiculousness of mixing complex technology with the Cretaceous period. They rarely use Mills’ advanced gadgets in any inspired ways within this prehistoric setting. The few attempts at humor fall flat—they mainly consist of Koa making fun of Mills for being uptight—and moments of peril wrap up too tidily for us to luxuriate in their anxiety.

Worst of all, Driver doesn’t get to ham it up nearly enough here. He’s an actor of great intensity, which can be both thrilling and amusing if he’s amping it up in a knowing way. Imagine him screaming “More!!!” as he’s blasting Luke Skywalker in “ Star Wars: The Last Jedi ,” or punching a wall during an argument in “ Marriage Story .” But the man he plays in “65” is blandly heroic and just seems generally annoyed. Greenblatt, meanwhile, does the best she can with a character we know absolutely nothing about. Koa speaks a language that’s not English, so most of her exchanges with Mills consist of mimicking the basic words he says to her, including “family.” There’s no real bond between them, but neither is there any sort of prickly tension since they’re stuck with each other. “The Last of Us,” this is not.

Beck and Woods offer some clever camerawork here and there, but also some erratic editing choices. And they borrow quite a bit from the “ Jurassic Park ” franchise: a giant footprint in the mud or a dinosaur’s yellow eye leering menacingly through a window. But maybe that’s inevitable at this point. Their film only gets truly enjoyably nutty toward the end, with its climactic combination of a sneaky quicksand patch, a ravenous Tyrannosaurus rex, a well-timed geyser eruption, and a catastrophic asteroid shower. But by then, it’s too late for us—and the planet.

Now in theaters.

What You Need To Know:

Smoking and/or Drug Use and Abuse: No smoking or drugs; and, Miscellaneous Immortality: Scary scenes with images of dinosaurs would scare young children.

More Detail:

In 65, a science fiction thriller, an asteroid hits an interstellar spaceship, which crash lands on Earth 65 million years ago, and the pilot must battle deadly dinosaurs to keep himself and the only other survivor, a 9-year-old girl, alive.

The opening scenes shows Commander Mills (Adam Driver) with his wife and daughter Nevine (Chloe Coleman) having a nice family day on some beach. It’s quickly established his daughter is sick and needs a lifesaving medical procedure to get better. Mills agrees to pilot a two-year interstellar mission to get a paycheck big enough to help his daughter.

Where is he going? What illness does his daughter have? Where do he and his family live? These questions are never answered, and the movie begins with the one word that seems to follow it throughout, confusing.

As Mills pilots the spaceship, he watches home videos of his daughter at home, telling him how much she loves and misses him, while also begging him to come home soon. Then, she dies. Next, the plane crashes. Mills was fighting for his daughter, but now she is gone. Also, what about his wife? No idea. The movie never mentions her again.

Mills looks around and notices all the passengers are dead. He is injured and dejected. He is almost ready to just give up himself when he runs into Koa, a young girl about his daughter’s age who has also survived. Koa is from a different place so she doesn’t speak the same language as Mills, and they can’t communicate with words. However, Mills can’t just let this young girl die.

The two begin their journey, venturing into the dangerous prehistoric lands, filled with deadly meat-eating dinosaurs. They also encounter large bugs, falling rocks and quicksand. In addition, Mills’ gun, the only true source of protection they have, doesn’t always work in time. However, they must get to the ship’s escape pod before being eaten by dinosaurs or falling asteroids, that are periodically in the distance.

Throughout these intense action scenes, Mills reveals that Koa’s family has died. Okay, so why are we watching this movie again? After Koa learns this, she’s very upset with Mills, but later must save him from a dangerous dinosaur.

65 is an engaging movie to watch for moviegoers interested in epic battle scenes between humans and dinosaurs. Aside from that, however, there’s not really a reason to sit through this movie. It’s just too hard to care about these characters since the movie reveals so little about them or the reason they’re fighting, especially since their families are already dead.

Another huge flaw in the movie is the lack of clear direction. Is 65 a horror movie? Or a science fiction movie? It tries to incorporate elements of the JURASSIC PARK franchise, but it lacks any characters that viewers might care about, so it fails in that arena. 65 is a short movie, at only 93 minutes, but it’s not a very inspiring movie. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution because of some extreme action violence, bloody scenes and scary images of dangerous dinosaurs.

‘65’ Review: What on Earth?

Millions of years ago, a guy from another planet landed on this one. Like most survivors, he had a moody little girl with him.

  • Share full article

In a film scene, a man and a young girl stand in a dense forest, looking worried.

By A.O. Scott

To paraphrase an old Monty Python sketch , nobody suspects the Cretaceous-Tertiary Extinction.

Certainly the poor dinosaurs didn’t, though for their more obsessive present-day human fans the fact that this movie is called “65” — as in million years ago — might count as a spoiler. When Mills the space pilot crash-lands on a muddy, reptile-infested Earth after his vessel is hit by an asteroid, you might have an inkling of the larger disaster in store.

I don’t mean the movie; that would be unkind. “65,” directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (two writers of the first “Quiet Place” film), is not interesting enough to be truly terrible or terrible enough to be halfway interesting. As Mills, Adam Driver does a lot of breathing and grunting as he runs a gantlet of familiar dangers. In addition to the T. rexes and other saurian menaces, he faces quicksand, large bugs, falling rocks, malfunctioning equipment and the withering judgment of a 9-year-old girl.

But let’s back up a second. Who are these people, and how did they get to our planet before (if I may quote the opening titles) “the advent of mankind”? The answer is that they belonged to an ancient extraterrestrial civilization, one sufficiently advanced to have invented not only space travel, but the usual array of futuristic sci-fi technology.

Their health care system was pretty bad, though. Mills’s adolescent daughter, Nevine (Chloe Coleman), suffers from a persistent, apparently life-threatening cough, and the only way he can afford her treatment is by taking on a high-paying “long-range exploratory mission.” He’s already grief-stricken when the asteroid hits, cleaving his spaceship in two and killing all of his cryogenically frozen passengers except one, a girl named Koa (Ariana Greenblatt).

The folks on their home planet, realistically enough, speak more than one language, so Koa and Mills — whose native idiom is English — can’t communicate very well. Also, he’s a grumpy, unhappy man and she’s a moody girl, so we’re on familiar survival-story terrain. “65” is a little like “ The Last of Us ,” but with dinosaurs instead of mushrooms and no obvious sociological theme that would sustain a think piece.

Which would be to its credit, if it managed to be a simple, effective action movie. Or science-fiction movie. Or scary movie. Or something. Like Mills’s emotional back story, the special effects seem to have been pulled out of a box of secondhand ideas. Nor is the execution all that impressive. There’s little in the way of awe, suspense or surprise. Just a quickly hatched plan to get off this God-forsaken planet and leave it to its fate.

65 Rated PG-13. Dinosaur blood and prehistoric curses. Running time: 1 hour 33 minutes. In theaters.

Writers and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods put a lot on the film’s shoulders. They got butts in the theater with the sci fi action premise, but the heart of the film is a thin, trite indie drama about grief and finding a reason to continue to live.

The whole desperate dad thing gets wearisome as if the movie were conscientiously telling lonely 9-year-olds how much their absent work-junkie fathers actually love them. Which it is. Driver’s big salary-earning business trip isn’t happening “to you."

Driver makes it all stick. It’s his first lead role in the action hero genre, and he adds depth and nuance to a thinly written role. We don’t know much about Mills, but the actor keeps us plugged in due to his ability to elevate material.

Movie Review

Business trips are just the worst. Just ask Mills.

The originally scheduled trip was bad enough: a two-year interplanetary journey, shuttling a bunch of cryogenically suspended passengers on an “exploratory mission.” Two years is a long time to be away, especially when you have a critically ill daughter back home. But how else is Mills going to afford his daughter’s treatment? Health care is apparently not any cheaper on Mills’ home planet of Somaris than it is here.

Yes, if everything went as planned, the job would’ve still been lacking. But you know how trips are: weather delays, unscheduled maintenance, your occasional killer asteroid storm. Mills’ ship was hit by the latter, sending it careening off course and crash-landing on some strange, green and insanely deadly world.

Half of the ship—the part that Mills is attached to—landed in a fetid swamp. The rest—including the ship’s only still-working escape pods—now sits on a big ol’ mountain, a good 10 miles away. And while 10 miles might not sound like a long way, it is when the crash pretty much sounded the dinner gong for the surrounding fauna.

Oh, and when you’re babysitting a 9-year-old girl.

That girl would be Koa, the only other survivor. And just to add to the degree of difficulty, she doesn’t speak English. (Though one wonders why Mills, coming from the planet Somaris and all, is so fluent in it.) Her parents are dead, though she doesn’t know it just yet. The planet seems to want her dead, too—which is soon made very clear.

Mills and Koa will have to cross jungles and rivers, avoid poisonous berries and insidious parasites, fight small dinosaurs, big dinosaurs and positively gargantuan dinosaurs.

And that asteroid shower? It’s heading their way, too. Y’know, just to make things interesting.

But at least Mills didn’t fly coach.

Positive Elements

When Mills realizes the predicament that he’s in, he’s ready to just give up. But when Mills learns that someone else has survived the crash, too, he does his very best to get he and the girl back home. He’s not always the most touchy-feely of protectors, but he is a ferocious one. Slowly, he begins to treat Koa a little like his own surrogate daughter.

Koa, meanwhile, proves to be perhaps even more brave than her brave protector. Understandably, she’s a little unnerved when she saves a dino cub from a perilous tar pit, only to see it devoured by predators a mere 90 seconds later. But once she understands that pretty much everything on the planet would like to eat her, Koa becomes surprisingly resourceful. She also rescues Mills a time or two—and given that she’s 9 years old, that’s pretty impressive. When my kids were 9, they didn’t even save me ice cream.

Spiritual Elements

Twenty minutes or so in, we learn that Mills and Koa have crash-landed on prehistoric Earth: The movie’s title, 65 , comes from the fact that this is Earth from 65 million years ago, and obviously evolution is implied.

Sexual Content

Violent content.

Herbivores are about as common as accredited universities in this prehistoric world of 65 , and the bevy of meat-hungry dinosaurs must’ve been thrilled at the prospect of eating something besides each other.

They do eat each other, by the way: Raptor-like dinos swarm over a sweet-but-limping bit of immature prey (though, given the teeth on the thing, that dino likely would’ve grown up on a nice diet of meat, too, so perhaps it was a preemptive strike). Lizard-like beasts catch and kill pterodactyl-like beasts.

And all have their big, beady eyes focused on Mills and Koa—attacking them at every opportunity. One of the most disturbing critters to attack actually does its work from the inside . (We see the thing when the victim’s mouth is opened. If it was sentient, it surely would be cackling with malicious glee.)

Mills responds to most of these threats with a nifty energy blaster, which gorily blows apart the smaller dinosaurs and perforates the bigger ones. He and Koa also use tiny marble-like explosive devices to dispatch a few monsters. Koa poisons a massive fang (or horn) she finds and stabs a Tyrannosaurus-like dinosaur right in the eye socket. (It’s pretty impressive, really, that she can even lift the thing.) Mills smashes a much smaller dino repeatedly with his weapon.

But those aren’t the only dangers to beset the pair or their would-be predators. Geysers prove to be dangerous (and telltale dinosaur bones beside one indicates that they’re sometimes lethal). Tar pits can mire the unsuspecting in its gooey folds. Quicksand—a peril that I’ve not seen on screen since Gilligan’s Island —nearly kills one of our human heroes.

And, of course, one must not forget the asteroid shower, which includes a huge one that pretty much (according to many scientists) ended the age of the dinosaurs forever. Add the dino fatality count after that big event, and we’re looking at a pretty huge number.

As mentioned, Mills’ ship crashes, which claimed the lives of 30-some passengers. While they hope they were sleeping when they slipped the surly bonds of earth, we do see their dead bodies lying about in a swamp. Mills is injured in the crash, too; he yanks a piece of metal from his midsection and painfully sprays it with a coolant. (It continues to cause him periodic discomfort throughout.) He also dislocates a shoulder, and sprains an ankle, and falls from a big tree, and is bitten by a very nasty dino and nearly perishes in a crumbling cave (as does Koa). It’s surprising he wasn’t beset by killer bees (though he does gorily crush a huge insect or two).

Koa, meanwhile, was burned in the crash (an injury that Mills treats), and she’s yanked around by a dinosaur by the hair, which can’t be fun. We also hear that someone has died (back on Somaris, Mills’ home planet).

Crude or Profane Language

Mills swears on occasion: three s-words and one use of the word “d–n.” Koa is blissfully unaware of these linguistic missteps, though we English/Somarian speakers in the audience are not.

Drug and Alcohol Content

None. Not surprising, given the lack of taverns in the region.

Other Negative Elements

Despite the language barrier between Mills and Koa, Mills still manages to lie to Koa—communicating to her that her parents are alive and well with the other half of the ship. Even at 9, you’d think Koa would be a little suspicious, given the state of the other half of the ship and, y’know, the dead bodies there and stuff. But perhaps children are more trusting on Somaris.

The critter that sneaks inside someone’s body causes that person to kinda vomit/froth at the mouth.

The movie 65 is not destined to go down as an all-time sci-fi classic. Despite the always-interesting presence of Adam Driver in, um, the driver’s seat, this turn-back-the-clock thriller ultimately boasts more plot holes than asteroid craters, and that’s saying something.

But while 65 has problems, it doesn’t lack heart. This quasi father-daughter story is sweet in its own way. And except for a rather surprising amount of dino-blood and guts, 65 plays it surprisingly clean.

Adam Driver’s latest sci-fi thriller is a B movie, plain and simple. But 65 does tell us that the love of a father and daughter—even if they’re not actually related—can defeat dinosaurs, asteroids and everything in between.

And that message is T-rex-eriffic.

65 Poster

If all you’re looking for out of a movie is Adam Driver running around in a jungle shooting dinosaurs while protecting a young girl, 65 delivers in spades. If you’re hoping for something more complex, either in terms of character development, background narrative, or world-building, the movie has neither the time nor the patience to accommodate. The dino special effects are adequate for the job (better than in 1993’s Jurassic Park but inferior to those in the third installment of the Jurassic World series ) and Driver appears committed to the work. The running length is a svelte 93 minutes, meaning that 65 isn’t around long enough to wear out its welcome. By keeping its goals limited, it’s able to deliver what it promises, and that stands for something. I’ll admit I was more entertained by this high-concept sci-fi adventure than half the films I have seen thus far in 2023.

In their directorial debut, Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (the writers of A Quiet Place ) keep it simple. The plot could be the template for a video game: get the hero from Point A to Point B without dying. Along the way, there are various impediments that have to be overcome: rockslides, steam geysers, quicksand, and (of) course dinosaurs. 65 mixes in an Aliens - inspired subplot about a lone, grieving adult “adopting” and orphaned young girl. At no point, however, does Adam Driver say to any of the dinosaurs, “Get away from her, you bitch !”

65 movie review parents guide

One could argue that 65 is real throw-back – all the way back to the 1920s and 1930s, when monster movies could enthrall and amaze. The first two-thirds of King Kong , after all, focused on explorers wandering around a prehistoric jungle and encountering dinosaurs. 65 has all the advantages of modern technology but it’s not significantly more sophisticated than the movies of Willis O’Brien. This is the kind of production that provides a couple of memorable moments (the T-Rex “reveal,” which is spoiled by the trailers, being the most notable) but somehow seems smaller than it should. Maybe that’s because we have been trained to expect that a menagerie like this is appropriate only for epics while the most lofty goal 65 can claim is being a slickly-made B movie.

65 Movie Review - More Family Drama Than Wild Dinosaur Adventure

  • First Released Mar 10, 2023 released

It's Adam Driver vs. dinosaurs in 65, but somehow this movie doesn't realize how awesome its premise is.

By Alyse Wax on March 10, 2023 at 11:58AM PST

Based solely on the trailers, I went into 65 thinking it was going to be an epic time travel tale with dinosaurs as the main antagonists. What I ended up getting was a fairly traditional, if not hollow, adventure with a focus more on family than on giant space lizards, which is unfortunate.

The movie starts 65 million years ago on Solaris, a planet similar to Earth. Though we see nothing more than the beach, the people look like humans. Mills (Adam Driver) is a father who leaves his wife and daughter for two years to take on a special project that will pay him extra--money that will go to his ailing daughter's hospital bills. We are not privy to what that special project is, but it involves Mills flying a spaceship full of cryopods to another planet. During the flight, his spaceship is hit by an asteroid and crashes on an uncharted planet (Earth). Mills is the only survivor until he discovers Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), a nine-year-old girl who survived in the cryopod. She doesn't speak English, her parents are dead, and they have to find the other half of their spaceship, which has the escape module. So there's your story.

A fairly rote adventure flick follows, with Mills and Koa trying to escape Earth before the asteroid that eradicates the dinosaurs hits the planet. Along the way, Koa has to learn to trust Mills; Mills has to learn to open his heart to Koa; and the pair must dodge dinosaurs and treacherous terrain. The plot is thin and is ultimately little more than a logline. There is no surprise plot device halfway through, nor is there a twist ending. It tells you what it is up front, and delivers exactly that.

This film had far too much family drama to keep my interest. I was hoping for hard sci-fi action; I got very little of that. 65 is definitely meant to appeal to a broader audience: people who want cute kid stories (like watching Mills try to explain things to Koa, who struggles to understand); people who want heartbreaking family stories (like when Mills finally accepts Koa and gives her a big hug); there is even a story for people looking for something with an adorable animal (when Koa decides to risk it all to save a baby dinosaur from a tar pit). It's enough to make you wonder if writer/director partners Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ script was meddled with by the studio to get a little bit of something for everyone into the precise 90-minute runtime. This was the pair's first big-studio directing gig, with previous directorial outings including low-budget horror like Haunt and Nightlight, and with the exception of a few overly dark scenes, 65 was competently shot.

Driver and Greenblatt were both fine in their respective roles. The only other humans in the film were Mills' daughter and wife. The daughter is seen through video holograms, while the wife isn't even named in the movie. It was interesting to see so few actors in a film, as it really put the onus on Driver to carry the film. Frankly, though, I don't know that he has the charisma to handle that burden. There was nothing special about his performance. No off-hand jokes; no special chemistry with Greenblatt. Then again, the character of Mills wasn't well developed, either. I never really grew to care about him, his family, or his struggle to get home. We spent less than two minutes with him and his family before he was sent off on his mission; suddenly, he was trying to piece together a crashed spaceship. It's as if any interesting character development was cut out, leaving us with little more than a shell of a character without much to latch onto. Luckily, Greenblatt was charming enough to carry a good portion of the film, even though her character mostly spoke a nonsense language.

The dinos in the movie are a bit better, but something about them still seems off. Anyone raised on a steady diet of Jurassic Park films has a very specific idea of how dinosaurs move and act in movies. Oddly, the dinosaurs in this film had a loose, almost slithery way of moving, making them feel alien. It's an odd choice to make, given that these are supposed to be dinosaurs on Earth. Despite that, the CGI was clean and looked good. And thankfully, CGI, which looks realistic, is all you need to be entertained sometimes. Not that it can make up for a core performance from your star that doesn't resonate as it should.

I think perhaps I had my hopes set too high for 65. I was expecting something much bigger than what it ended up being. Logically, for it to go up against Scream VI at the box office, you would assume it to be a big, sprawling film. Instead, you're treated to something that would have been just fine if you watched it at home on a streaming service.

  • Leave Blank
  • The CGI was well done
  • It is well-rounded, to please a variety of tastes
  • The plot was thin
  • The movie is overloaded with family drama
  • Adam Driver can't carry the movie

How Much Did Inside Out 2 Cost To Make & What Box Office It Needs

Inside out 2 review: anxiety & envy breathe new life into formulaic pixar sequel, inside out 2 voice cast: every new, returning & recast character.

  • Inside Out 2 will tackle heavier subject matter like high school, relationships, and anxiety, appealing to older viewers.
  • The movie is rated PG for thematic elements, indicating it may have some intense moments but still suitable for children.
  • The sequel will introduce new Emotions and build upon the original, offering a heartwarming story for the whole family.

Like all of Pixar's animated classics, Inside Out 2 is designed to appeal to all ages, but that doesn't preclude it from venturing into some heavier subject matter. The sequel to the beloved 2015 that followed the escapades of five anthropomorphic Emotions in the mind of a preteen girl, Riley, will pick up a short while after the original ended, and will introduce new cast and Emotions as Riley becomes a teenager and deals with puberty. Inside Out is considered one of the greatest movies Pixar/Disney has ever produced, and it was nominated for two Academy Awards upon release.

Inside Out 2 will differ from its predecessor by dealing with some more advanced material. While the big emotional obstacle for Riley in Inside Out was moving to a new city, Inside Out 2 will deal with high school, relationships, and anxiety among other "big kid" problems. Justifiably, that calls into question just how appropriate the sequel is for children who aren't yet teenagers. If Inside Out 2 's box office projections are any indicator, there will be plenty of younger eyes on the movie.

Inside Out 2 Is Rated PG For Thematic Elements

Like most pixar movies, there will likely be some peril and fear.

Inside Out 2 is, like most Pixar movies, rated PG, indicating that some parental guidance is recommended. PG movies are widely recognized as being entirely appropriate for any child over the age of 8, but can still be suitable for children younger than 8 with the exception of some scenes that they might find scary. That looks like it's the case for Inside Out 2 , as it has been rated PG for "thematic elements."

Pixar's chief creative officer Pete Docter, who directed Inside Out , originally imagined up to 27 different emotions, as that more accurately reflects the real human experience. Inside Out 2 reflects his original vision for the 2015 classic.

With the sequel set to introduce four new Emotions, the story may venture into some new elements from the original. The new emotion Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke) in particular will likely be involved in some emotionally intense moments, which the youngest viewers in the theater could potentially find upsetting. Chances are there will be some moments of fear and danger, but nothing more objectionable than that. As an animated kids movie, there won't be any sort of real violence or death, although there may be some sad moments, like Bing Bong disappearing in Inside Out .

Inside Out 2 Is Very Suitable For Children

Its bright characters return with a fun, heartwarming story.

Riley takes a selfie while riding in an Uber in Inside Out 2

Overall Inside Out 2 is perfectly appropriate for the entire family. The most intense moments will almost certainly have a happy resolution, and any violence will be of the cartoon slapstick variety, designed to make kids laugh. The highly-anticipated sequel, which will have its first showtimes on Thursday, June 13th , will build upon the foundations laid in Inside Out , and will have more time to introduce the newest Emotions with no need to spend time establishing the world in which they live.

Inside Out 2 will undoubtedly still feature a heartwarming, enjoyable story that will delight viewers of all ages.

The full trailer for Inside Out 2 reveals that the new Emotions introduced (Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Nostalgia) fundamentally change Riley as a person as she becomes a teenager. That will definitely ensure that the movie strikes a chord with the viewers who have experienced becoming a teenager, and properly pushes the franchise forward. However, Inside Out 2 will undoubtedly still feature a heartwarming, enjoyable story that will delight viewers of all ages.

Inside Out 2 Poster Showing Joy and the Other Emotions Squished Together

Inside Out 2

Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 original film, which starred a young girl named Riley with a head full of emotions. - literally. With Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, the all-star cast brought to life the emotions that adolescents face as they grow, change, and adapt to new situations. This sequel, currently in development, will bring Amy Pohler back as Joy, with Riley, now a teenager.

Types of Life Insurance

While there's many different types of life insurance policies , broadly speaking, there are two types of life insurance: temporary and permanent. Let's go over each in detail.

Temporary life insurance

Temporary life insurance is often called term life insurance. This type of policy covers you for a set amount of time before expiring, usually between 10-30 years. If you pass away after your policy expires, your family won't receive any benefits. Additionally, your policy won't accrue cash value like a permanent policy. That said, some term life insurance policies offer a conversion from term to whole life insurance, so you can extend your coverage.

Because its benefits aren't guaranteed, term life policies are generally cheaper than permanent life insurance. That said, the vast majority of term life insurance policies never pay out. on

Permanent life insurance

Permanent life insurance is an umbrella term for a variety of life insurance policies that will insure you indefinitely and guarantee a payout as long as you maintain your policy. Policy types that fall under permanent life insurance includes:

  • Whole life insurance
  • Universal life insurance
  • Variable life insurance
  • Variable universal life insurance
  • Simplified life insurance
  • Guaranteed issue life insurance

These policies vary widely in purpose and intended buyers, but all guarantee death benefits to your loved ones. Some permanent life insurance policies, like whole, universal, and variable have a cash value component , which you can use as a savings tool or to leave your heirs a larger death benefit.

How to Pick the Best Life Insurance Policy for You

Finding the right fit in life insurance starts with finding a trusted insurance agent. Because there are so many state regulations, shopping for homeowners or auto insurance can be easily done online. Life insurance is not required. So it's a voluntary purchase. Many buyers don't know what they need or when they need it. Before making your selection, consider a few things:

Some companies will sell you a policy for your child as soon as they're born. While this may seem morbid, early sign-up means lower rates for a policy your child could enjoy in the future. Regardless, early sign-up equates to more policy for lower premiums and a higher likelihood of acceptance. At 20, you may be healthier and be able to pay into the policy for a longer period compared to when you're 50 with more age-related conditions.

As a general rule, never agree to more than you can afford. For the average life insurance agent, their job is to sell you a large policy with a large commission. Consider not only how much you make now, but how likely your current income is to continue. If you work on a project basis and your project is scheduled to end in 12 months, you may want to reconsider a policy premium outside your monthly savings.

How much are you prepared to buy? Some people only want a small policy to cover funerals and other end-of-life expenses. Others build a life policy into their retirement plan. Whatever direction you're going, involving a financial planner could help you make the right decisions. Depending on the carrier, customers can also compare set limits with index universal life policies, which set no limit. These policies never expire, and the value builds over the entirety of your life.

Living Benefits

Life happens unexpectedly. You could be healthy one day and in the hospital the next. Many life policies offer living benefits. These allow you to draw a limited amount out of your policy to cover medical and other bills you cannot pay while sick.

Much like a 401(k), many life insurance policies have penalties for early withdrawal. No matter what policy you want, this question is critical to an informed decision. It's a question of how early you can withdraw and how much you'll lose from the total to have the money in 10 years instead of 30 or after death.

Some policies require insured parties to pay premiums for at least one year before any significant payout would be available. Suicide exclusions are common. Even with no medical exam policies, the company may still do a check for known conditions. An insurance company has to mitigate its risk.

Flexibility

Once you've been denied a life insurance policy, a mark goes on your record. No matter the reasons, other insurance companies may deny you coverage based on the first denial. So consider your whole situation and choose your policy carefully before you submit any applications. Some policies have greater flexibility if you lose your job or otherwise can't make payments. Others will lapse if you miss even one payment.

Payment Type

Even within whole life or term life insurance policies, customers have the option to choose guaranteed fixed or variable rates. Some have guaranteed payouts, but you'll need to ask your agent for details.

What is your intended use? Why are you shopping for a life insurance policy in the first place, and what are your goals? Many successful financial planners also have a background in life insurance. So while they may not be able to find you a specific life insurance policy, financial planners can help you set out a blueprint for your purchase.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed the Best Life Insurance Companies

In life insurance, it's easy to get "sold a bill of goods." Many life insurance agents pass a state test to be thrown into the deep end. Agents sell the company product, but not all know the products. In this vein, we look at the products each company offers. We also look at agent training.

A good life insurance agent may not volunteer all facts upfront. But a company's agents should answer questions about its products accurately and in a way the average consumer can digest. Agents should be able to inform you about the long-term benefits and limitations. This will help customers find the right policy for their long-term plan.

We consider affordability, policy sizes available, and performance for a comprehensive assessment in our insurance rating methodology . If you can, we recommend also working with a financial advisor to make a plan for your future with life insurance.

Our Expert Panel for The Best Life Insurance Companies

To inform our choices for the best life insurance companies, we spoke with the following experts:

  • Paul LaPiana , head of product at MassMutual
  • Barbara Pietrangelo , CFP, CLU, and chair of the nonprofit Life Happens
  • Wykeeta Peel , Corporate Vice President and Market Manager, African American Market Unit at New York Life

The Experts' Advice on Choosing The Best Life Insurance for You

How much life insurance coverage do you believe the average buyer should have.

Paul LaPiana, Head of Product at MassMutual

"There are different approaches to determining how much life insurance you need. One is the 'human life' approach, which estimates the current value of your future earning potential. Another is securing specific coverage to pay off debts such as a mortgage or provide for the education of children. A comprehensive protection plan should provide the right amount of coverage over the course of your working life and into retirement."

Barbara A. Pietrangelo, Chair of Life Happens

"There is no one-size-fits-all life insurance policy because everyone is different. One way to get a rough estimate is to multiply your income by 10 to 15; another is adding $100,00 to that amount, should you have a child and anticipate college education expenses.

Your best bet is to talk to a financial professional or use the Life Insurance Needs Calculator on LifeHappens.org to analyze what's right for you."

Wykeeta Peel, Corporate Vice President & Market Manager African American Market Unit at New York Life

"As you consider what policy best meets your needs, it can help to answer four key questions: First, how much death benefit do you need? Second, how long will you need that coverage? Third, what is your budget (or how much monthly premium can you afford to pay?), and finally, what is your investment risk tolerance?

To determine how much death benefit makes sense, it's helpful to think beyond using life insurance to cover funeral expenses and consider whether anyone is relying on the policy owner's income to maintain a lifestyle, pay rent or a mortgage, or fund a child's education and for how long.

There are various rules of thumb regarding the right amount of Life insurance coverage. Some tips can be found online, but they only provide an estimate and don't necessarily factor in an individual's specific needs. In my opinion, human guidance, powered by technology, is required. Basically, it comes down to how much money your loved ones would need to remain on firm financial ground if your earnings were no longer in the picture and that is different for everyone."

What is the biggest opportunity you see for improvement in the life insurance industry?

"Increased accessibility through digital and other channels as well as through underwriting enhancements. Increased tailoring of products and features. And an increased emphasis on health and wellness programs."

"Having enough qualified insurance professionals to walk potential buyers through the multiple benefits of life insurance will be pivotal to the growth of the industry. Education is a key factor here, as professional agents also need to be able to explain life insurance and its benefits in an easy, digestible way, especially when there are so many misconceptions about life insurance."

"The need for life insurance is greater than ever. In fact, a recent New York Life Wealth Watch survey found that 37% of adults have been thinking about life insurance more often these days – and half of adults report that financial products that provide protection (50%) and reliability (50%) are more important now compared to last year. This may be especially true for middle-market and Cultural Market families.

Our organizational structure of having Cultural Market agents embedded in the communities where we live and work allows us to understand the needs of diverse communities and develop solutions that resonate with them."

What advice would you give to buyers who are debating whether or not to buy life insurance?

"It is difficult to say with any certainty how healthy you will be years from now. That's why securing life insurance, and insuring your insurability, today, when you are the youngest you'll ever be again, and perhaps your healthiest is a wise decision."

"Do you love someone? If the answer is yes, then life insurance is certainly something you should consider. Many buy gifts and experiences to express their love, but haven't considered that life insurance is just another way to say I love you. Nothing says support like ensuring your family's financial security and peace of mind."

"If you have someone depending on your income, you should consider purchasing life insurance. A death benefit from a life insurance policy can replace income from the loss of a breadwinner, ensure a family can stay in their home, fund educational or retirement expenses, address debt and so much more.

A life insurance policy can also help you grow your family's wealth over time. Once the risk of an unexpected loss has been managed, you can begin to think more broadly about your family's financial future. Life insurance can enable your mindset to shift from death to growth."

What's the most important thing buyers should look for when choosing a life insurance agent/company to buy from?

"With life insurance, you are securing a future commitment that may be decades away. Research the company behind the policy to ensure it has high financial strength ratings, longevity, and an excellent track record of paying claims."

"When looking for an insurance agent or company, be sure to do your research. When comparing companies, be sure to remember that the policy features that fit you and your loved ones best is the most important factor. Don't automatically assume you should buy from the higher-rated company.

If the policy from the other company has more of what you're looking for, it might be the better choice. If you're unsure where to start, try the Life Happens Agent Locator to find an insurance professional in your area."

  • "The insurers' track record: At its core, life insurance is protection - a hedge against the unexpected - and you are paying premiums in exchange for the promise that the insurer will be there when you need them, so the financial strength and track record of the company backing your policy is critical.
  • Customer service: Are service professionals available by phone and digital channels? Is there is an online dashboard where you can manage your policy? Beyond ensuring assistance is available after you purchase a policy, it's also critical to ensure you have access to trusted advice and guidance before you buy.
  • Flexibility in conversion: How easy is it to change? Life can be unpredictable and while term insurance can cover your loved ones through a critical period of time, you may decide that access to cash value is an important piece of your strategy.
  • Accelerated online applications : Online applications are convenient but don't replace human guidance. Keep in mind that accelerated online applications may have a maximum coverage amount, meaning that you may not be able to get all the coverage you may need exclusively through an online process.
  • A range of payment options: It's important to understand how often you're required to make premium payments and whether and how often you can change the frequency of payments."

Best Life Insurance FAQs

According to JD Power's 2023 life insurance study, State Farm is the highest-rated life insurance company when it comes to overall customer satisfaction. However, you still may want to shop around for quotes from various insurers if you're looking to purchase a new policy.

There isn't one best life insurance company, because the best option for you will depend on the type of policy you're looking for. It's best to work with a qualified insurance agent to help you find the best coverage. If you're deciding between multiple similar options, it's also worth consulting J.D. Power's life insurance customer satisfaction study . The latest study ranks State Farm as the top pick for individual life insurance, outpacing Nationwide by three points.

The best type of life insurance policy for you will differ from someone else's, as your policy should be tailored to your needs. The best policy for you will be affordable and will offer the benefits best suited to your situation. For example, some policies are only meant to cover end-of-life expenses such as burial and funeral arrangements, whereas others include living benefits like a cash value insurance plan , which you can borrow against during your lifetime.

Some life insurance policies are advertised as "no medical exam." This doesn't mean the insurer won't ask you about known conditions or look at medical records. Policies with no medical exam also tend to offer lower benefits with higher premiums. Most companies have a network of medical examiners, some of whom can come to your home. You can find our guide on the best no exam life insurance here.

Each situation is different and requires a knowledgeable life insurance agent to assess your best options. Bring all your questions and the coverage you're looking for to an insurance agent near you to explore your options.

Godzilla Minus One Film Poster

Godzilla Minus One

One of the biggest surprise hits of 2023, Godzilla Minus One follows Kamikaze pilot Shikishima ( Darren Barnet ), who, after failing to distract the titular iconic monster, was accidentally at fault for the deaths of several warplane engineers. Intent to make up for his error, Shikishima joins a team whose sole purpose is to destroy the monster for good. One of cinema’s most legendary villains, there have been numerous versions of the Godzilla story, with this one widely considered one of the best of all time. Equal parts a gripping tale and dazzling cinematic experience, the movie even picked up a Visual Effects Oscar at the most recent Academy Awards — such is the extent of this film’s triumph. - Jake Hodges

'War Dogs' (2016)

Rotten tomatoes: 62% | imdb: 7.1/10.

War Dogs Film Poster

Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips , War Dogs follows the life of David Packouz ( Miles Teller ), who, to begin with, lives as normal and mundane a life as can be imagined. However, everything is set to change when he runs into an old friend, with the two of them earning a contract to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan. Featuring a cameo from the real David Packouz , War Dogs is loosely based on a true story, with the mind-blowing depths of this narrative made even wilder when learning of this fact. Both of the central characters are neatly flawed, with their mistakes always rooted in reality — an important addition to any protagonist in a story of this ilk. Deeply gripping but also often funny, War Dogs has a bit of everything. - Jake Hodges

'Atlas' (2023)

Atlas Movie Poster Showing Jennifer Lopez Looking up Into the Sky Flying a Spaceship

Atlas (2024)

Directed by Brad Peyton ( San Andreas , Rampage ), Atlas is a sci-fi action thriller film starring Jennifer Lopez , Simu Liu , Sterling K. Brown , and Mark Strong . The movie is written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite and follows a data analyst who is forced to put aside her distrust of Artificial Intelligence for the sake of humanity’s future. Hot on the heels of her 2023 Netflix movie The Mother , Atlas puts J. Lo in another high-octane action story, this time going up against a very creepy robot who wants to end all life on Earth, played by Shang Chi star Simu Liu. The film is essentially a survival thriller, with Lopez’s Atlas Shepherd crashing on a wild planet and being forced to work with another AI called Smith (voiced by Gregory James Cohan ) to stay alive and complete her mission. It’s a buddy survival movie for the age of generative AI, with a few touches of I, Robot and Pacific Rim thrown into the mix. With gorgeous visuals, a stacked cast, and a cool, far-future setting, Atlas checks off all the boxes for a classic Netflix actioner.

'The Equalizer' (2014)

Rotten tomatoes: 61% | imdb: 7.2/10.

the equalizer 2014

The Equalizer (2014)

Based on the 1980s TV series of the same name, The Equalizer is an action thriller film directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Richard Wenk , starring Denzel Washington as Robert McCall. A former Marine and Defense Intelligence Agency Paramilitary Operations Officer, McCall returns to action in The Equalizer to protect a teenage girl from human traffickers. The movie’s cast also includes Chloë Grace Moretz , David Harbour , Bill Pullman , Marton Csokas , and Melissa Leo . Though The Equalizer received rather mixed reviews from critics, the film was a box office success and has proven quite popular with audiences. In the years since its release, it’s spawned two sequels, The Equalizer 2 in 2018 and The Equalizer 3 in 2023. While the plot is a bit uneven and almost nonsensical in parts, the stylish action sequences and gratuitous violence still carry you through its 132-minute runtime. Denzel Washington is as scintillating as ever in the lead role, and when you add the stacked supporting cast and Fuqua’s slick direction to the mix, you’ve got one great old-school actioner that’s perfect for a weekend movie night.

'Anyone But You' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 55% | imdb: 6.2/10.

Anyone But You Movie Poster

Anyone But You

is a romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck that’s loosely based on the William Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing . Gluck also co-wrote the screenplay with Ilana Wolpert . The film stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell as two people who have an instant connection that quickly turns sour, only to find themselves reunited at a destination wedding where they must pretend to be a couple. Though Anyone But You received a mixed reception from critics, the film has performed quite well at the box office, earning over $200 million globally. The chemistry between its two talented stars is what makes Anyone But You such a fun rom-com and has made the film so popular with audiences. Sure, there are better Shakespeare adaptations and better enemies-to-lovers rom-coms out there, but Sweeney and Powell’s enjoyable performances make this a much better movie than it would otherwise have been.

'Shrek' (2001)

Rotten tomatoes: 90% | imdb: 7.9/10.

Shrek Film Poster

It’s easy to forget just how big of a deal Shrek was when it hit theaters in 2001, but it was a very big deal. DreamWorks Animation challenged Pixar in the realm of CG animation with a more edgy, slightly more adult-oriented animated film — one in which parents would be laughing at jokes that went over their children’s heads. But at its core, Shrek works beautifully as a story of an outsider looking for acceptance, and of love coming from unexpected places. It’s also just a really pretty and fun fairy tale in its own right. While technology has advanced considerably in the two decades since its release, Shrek still holds up all these years later. – Adam Chitwood

'Four Daughters' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 85% | imdb: 7.3/10.

Four Daughters Film Poster

Four Daughters

Read Our Review Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania , Four Daughters is an Arabic-language documentary film that explores the true story of a Tunisian woman whose two eldest daughters were radicalized by Islamic extremists. After the disappearance of her daughters, the filmmaker invites professional actresses to take their place, blending reality and fiction to give the audience an intimate view of the family’s life. The movie was a co-production between France, Tunisia, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. Four Daughters premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the prestigious Palme d'Or Award. The film received near-universal acclaim and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 96th Academy Awards. Critics have lauded Kouther Ben Hania’s form-breaking approach to the film, and that masterful storytelling is what makes this documentary all the more engaging. Four Daughters makes the lives of its subjects come alive in heartbreaking detail in a way that few other documentaries have done before.

'American Graffiti' (1973)

Rotten tomatoes: 95% | imdb: 7.4/10.

American Graffiti poster

American Graffiti

George Lucas ’s directorial debut, American Graffiti is a coming-of-age comedy-drama starring Richard Dreyfuss , Ron Howard , and Paul Le Mat . The film follows the adventures of a group of teens in 1960s Modesto, California, on the last day of summer as they grapple with their futures. The film is comprised of a series of vignettes that come together to tell a concurrent story of cruising culture, rock-and-roll, greasers, and mysterious blondes. Far removed from Lucas’ later creations, American Graffiti is a nostalgic and bittersweet film that speaks to a more thoughtful sensibility. Critically acclaimed, the movie is visually striking and features some great performances, including an appearance by a pre- Star Wars Harrison Ford . The movie is a nostalgic return to the sixties, full of heart and humor — and it helps that it also has one of the greatest rock soundtracks of all time.

'The Matrix' (1999)

Rotten tomatoes: 83% | imdb: 8.7/10.

The Matrix Film Poster

Written and directed by the Wachowskis , The Matrix is a science fiction film that stars Keanu Reeves as a hacker who discovers that the world he lives in is an illusion crafted by malevolent Artificial Intelligence. The movie also stars Laurence Fishburne , Carrie-Anne Moss , and Hugo Weaving and spawned a franchise that includes three sequels and an animated anthology. The Matrix is an ambitious movie that presents the very best in technical filmmaking, winning the Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing. The performances are solid, the action is spectacular, and the plot is intricately crafted. The film’s narrative style feels quite surreal, drawing the audience into its ever-expanding world in a way that feels like a blend of Hong Kong action movies, cyberpunk anime, and 1990s techno-futurism. It’s dystopian, slick, and easily one of the best films ever made in its genre.

'Molly's Game' (2017)

Rotten tomatoes: 81% | imdb: 7.4/10.

molly's game poster

Molly's Game

Based on the true story of Molly Bloom , Molly’s Game was written and directed by Aaron Sorkin and stars Jessica Chastain in the lead role. An Olympic-level skier whose career was ended by an accident, the film follows Molly as she seeks a different kind of gold by running a high-stakes underground poker ring. The movie also stars Idris Elba , Kevin Costner , Jeremy Strong , and more. Sorkin’s directorial debut, the film received critical acclaim, largely thanks to Sorkin's Oscar-nominated script and the phenomenal performances by Chastain and Elba. The role of Molly Bloom earned Chastain her fifth Golden Globe nomination, further cementing her reputation as an acting powerhouse. It’s one of the defining performances of her career, and that alone should make the movie worth watching. Tightly written and expertly paced, Molly’s Game is a complete entertainer from beginning to end and a brilliant showcase of Sorkin’s abilities as a writer and filmmaker.

'American Symphony' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 94% | imdb: 6.9/10.

American Symphony poster

American Symphony

Even if you just watch the trailer for American Symphony, you will be in tears. The documentary tells the story of Grammy winner Jon Batiste and his wife, Suleika Jaouad , as they live a life of drastic contrast. While Batiste continues to take over the music world, Jaouad goes through an intense battle with cancer. Jaouad begins chemotherapy on the same day Batiste is nominated for 11 Grammy Awards – an obviously unplanned detail that sums up the entire message of the film: that a wonderful thing and terrible thing can happen at the same time. Over the course of the documentary, Batiste is writing a composition that he plans to play for one night only at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival to great reviews, with Variety Magazine calling it “one of the best love stories seen on film.” Currently, American Symphony is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “It Never Went Away” by Batiste and Dan Wilson . - Emily Cappello

Currently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Leading Actor for its star, Colman Domingo , Rustin tells the story of Bayard Rustin (Domingo), a civil rights activist heavily inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr. Rustin sets out to organize the March on Washington against huge obstacles like racism and homophobia. Those familiar with the March on Washington, which occurred in 1963, know how paramount it was in the fight to end racial discrimination and that it concluded with Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The film follows these incredible historic events while highlighting Rustin’s passion and enthusiasm for civil rights.

The film also stars Aml Ameen ( The Maze Runner ) as Dr. King, Glynn Turman ( Super 8 ) as A. Philip Randolph , Chris Rock ( The Longest Yard ) as Roy Wilkins , and Audra McDonald ( A Raisin In The Sun ) as Ella Baker . Rustin was previously nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for Best Original Song by Lenny Kravitz and Best Performance by Domingo. - Emily Cappello

'Nyad' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 86% | imdb: 7.1/10.

Nyad Film Poster

Oscar winners Annette Bening and Jodie Foster dominate in the biographical sports drama Nyad . Directed by documentarians Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin , Nyad is their feature directorial debut, which benefits from their experience capturing authenticity. As expected from most sports dramas and biopics, Nyad shares a story of perseverance, the triumphs of determination, and a message of hope, showcased by the undeniable on-screen power of Bening and Foster.

The actors’ dedication to truth in storytelling, as well as their chemistry, shine alongside the smart script written by Julia Cox . Nyad engages the audience with its solid foundation while entertaining through grounded drama based on reality instead of relying on cheap cliches. - Yael Tygiel

'Society of the Snow' (2023)

The poster for Society of the Snow

Society of the Snow

In 1972, a Uruguayan flight crashed while carrying a rugby team on their way to Chile, and the survivors of the wreck had to work together to survive in the treacherously cold weather of the Andes. This real-life event is the subject of J.A. Bayona 's film Society of the Snow , which tackles the incredible story of the survivors and their attempts to survive for two months in the mountains. Director Bayona got the idea for the film upon discovering the book The Society of the Snow , which was written by Pablo Vierci , and used the same name for his film. The cast, largely composed of newcomers in the acting world, is completely composed of Uruguayan and Argentinian performers.

The film was nominated for two Oscars, including Best International Feature Film, a Golden Globe for Best Non-English Language Film, and a Critic's Choice Award for the same category. With a budget of 60 million euros, The Society of Snow is the most expensive Spanish film ever made. With music by Michael Giacchino , the film is acclaimed for its emotional undertone and important message. - Emily Cappello

'May December' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 90% | imdb: 6.9/10.

May December Film Poster

May December

While watching May December , I found myself laughing out loud almost as much as I was cringing. I also found myself looking online afterward to see if my reaction was “normal.” This kaleidoscope viewing experience shows the brilliance of May December and how its subject matter — a thirty-six-year-old woman entering into a relationship with a seventh grader and having his three children — will dramatically change depending on the person telling the story. The plot follows actress Elizabeth ( Natalie Portman ) as she shadows Gracie ( Julianne Moore ), the controversial woman (and sex offender) who inspired Elizabeth’s latest film role. Or, depending on your point of view, it’s about Gracie’s experience as Elizabeth enters and disrupts the parts of her she’s been able to keep hidden. Or it’s about Gracie’s much, much younger husband, Joe ( Charles Melton ), as he discovers what Elizabeth’s presence means about his own life.

Written and directed by Todd Haynes , the film was inspired by the real-life relationship between teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her sixth-grade student, Vili Fualaau. The two had children together and eventually married upon Letourneau’s release from prison, as Gracie and Joe did in May December . While it seems impossible that, given these themes, the film would have any laugh-out-loud moments, Haynes has crafted the story in such a way that it’s aware of its own absurdity. And, perhaps, we would find humor in the smallest moments, like Gracie dramatically revealing they “need more hot dogs” just to forget the insanity of the situation we’ve found ourselves in as an audience. - Emily Cappello

'Maestro' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 79% | imdb: 6.7/10.

maestro-poster

One of the most talked-about films of 2023, Maestro tells the story of American composer Leonard Bernstein ( Bradley Cooper ), his rise to fame, and how that fame affected his relationship with long-time love Felicia Montealegre ( Carey Mulligan ). Directed and co-written by Cooper alongside screenwriter Josh Singer , the film was produced by cinema heavy hitters Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg . The film won the American Film Institute (AFI)’ s “Movie of the Year” and was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, including “Best Motion Picture, Drama,” “Best Director,” and “Best Performance by a Male Actor” for Cooper and “Best Performer by Female Actor” for Mulligan. It co-stars Matt Bomer ( In Time ), Vincent Amato ( Unbroken ), and comedian Sarah Silverman .

Leonard Bernstein began his career as an assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic and rose to fame when he filled in for the main conductor, who had fallen ill. Maestro follows Bernstein as he meets and marries Felicia Montealegre, who struggles with her new husband’s infidelity. While Bernstein goes on to compose some of the most famous music in American history, including West Side Story , he struggles with alcohol and other substances, causing more issues in his marriage. - Emily Cappello

'Set It Up' (2018)

Rotten tomatoes: 92% | imdb: 6.5/10.

Set it Up Netflix Poster

Two corporate executive assistants hatch a plan to match-make their two bosses.

Read Our Review Anyone who knows me knows I’m a rom-com junkie — obsessed to the point of running a podcast on it, actually. So it’s no surprise that Set It Up , Netflix’s 2018 original film starring Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell , is easily my favorite movie the streamer has on offer, even five years after its premiere. While they’ve made plenty of other rom-coms since the film was released, the story of two down-on-their-luck executive assistants who attempt to set their bosses up with each other for a little free time is easily still their best.

While it’s not the first time Powell and Deutch starred together — that award goes to Richard Linklater ’s Everybody Wants Some!! — and both have gone onto much bigger projects, it’s a sweet and heartwarming film that’s easy to get into, even if the comedy’s a bit cringe-worthy. It’s rare to find rom-coms made after 2005 whose leads have such immediate, entertaining, and believable chemistry and even rarer to find a cast filled with heavyweights who are just as much fun — can you believe this film also boasts the likes of Lucy Liu , Taye Diggs , and Pete Davidson ? Not to mention it’s an easy hour and forty-five minutes, perfect for watching (and rewatching, as I do) whenever you want a little fun in your life. — Maggie Boccella, News Editor

'It Follows' (2015)

Rotten tomatoes: 95% | imdb: 6.8/10.

It Follows Film Poster

Read Our Review In a world filled with remakes and reboots, It Follows defied the norm by finding an original way to tell a mysterious horror story. The story follows Jay ( Maika Monroe ), a teenager who has sex with a guy named Hugh ( Jake Weary ), whom she doesn’t know very well. Afterward, Hugh tells her that she’s inherited a curse that he's now free of. Jay starts to be followed by a phantom who wishes her dead, and the only way Jay can get rid of the curse is if she sleeps with someone else, passing it along to them.

It Follows premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, where it was then a part of a limited theatrical release before moving to a nationwide release in 2015. Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell ( Under the Silver Lake ), audiences raved about the movie not just for its originality but also for their different interpretations of the meaning behind the plot. Throughout its time in theaters, the film continually received great reviews for its terrifying scares and for its deeper meaning. As of October 2023, a sequel is in the works entitled They Follow . - Emily Cappello

'Burning' (2018)

Rotten tomatoes: 95% | imdb: 7.5/10.

Burning 2018 Poster

Based on the short story “Barn Burning” by Haruki Murakami , Burning is a South Korean-Japanese thriller written and directed by Lee Chang-dong in his first film after an eight-year hiatus. The film focuses on Lee Jong-su ( Yoo Ah-in ) after he runs into an old classmate named Shin Hae-mi ( Jeon Jong-seo ), who asks him to feed her cat while she’s away. Jong-su obliges, but upon Hae-mi’s return with a mysterious man named Ben ( Steven Yeun ), things take an odd turn. When Ben admits his illegal and dangerous hobby to Jong-su, Jong-su becomes worried for Hae-mi’s safety. It's a story that knows how to heighten the tension little by little and, by the end, has viewers' hearts racing.

Burning premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, where it won the International Critics’ Prize and was then released in South Korea and later in the United States. Perhaps more impressive, the film was voted as the best Korean film of all time on Korean Screen. Burning appeared on many critics’ “Top 10” lists for 2018, with critics at The A.V. Club and The Los Angeles Times rating it number one. The film also made some “Best Films of the Decade” Lists, proving the power of the writing, directing, and the three lead actors’ performances. - Emily Cappello

'Mobile Suit Gundam I' (1981)

Imdb: 7.9/10.

mobile suit gundam i

Mobile Suit Gundam I

In outer space, an interplanetary war is raging. This is the story of Mobile Suit Gundam I , a Japanese animated action and adventure movie based on an animated series of the same name. While the battle rages on in the Solar System, there is hope in the form of a mobile battle suit named the “Gundam,” but there’s one problem: the only person able to pilot the massive machinery is a boy named Amuro Ray ( Toru Furuya ). Now, Amuro must fight alongside other kids to save themselves and their families as the war rages on. The film also stars Hirotaka Suzuoki , Toshio Furukawa , Kiyonobu Suzuki , and Shôzô îzuka .

The film, directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Ryoji Fujiwara , premiered in Japan in 1981 and acted as a compilation of episodes 1-13 of the popular Animated series Mobile Suit Gundam . Later dubbed in English and released on VHS tape in the United States in 1999, both the film and its original show material were suddenly popular worldwide, finding a completely new fanbase with English-speaking audiences. - Emily Cappello

Positive Messages

Friendship is important and can change over time as you do. It's important to explore who you are and find yourself -- regardless of age. Have the courage to pursue your dreams. Life doesn't always go to plan, and new beginnings can be scary, but also exciting and rewarding.

Positive Role Models

Lucy is initially stuck in her life, doing the same things and not making any changes or opening herself up to new experiences. Jane is more confident and impulsive, and tries to bring Lucy out of her shell, but sometimes makes assumptions about what Lucy needs. Both value their friendship and are supportive toward each other, though can also be hurtful when things get difficult.

Diverse Representations

The movie centers a woman exploring her sexuality and coming out as a lesbian in her 30s, whereas coming-out movies more often focus on teens. As well as LGBTQ+ representation on-screen, directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne are lesbians, and the movie is inspired by the experiences of writer Lauren Pomerantz, who herself came out in her 30s. Stereotypes are used, but poked fun at, such as a straight character saying "I've always wanted to try it" regarding lesbian sex, and a boyfriend appearing impressed and sexualizing the fact that his girlfriend kissed a girl at school. While lead actor Dakota Johnson is White, her best friend is played by Sonoya Mizuno , who has Japanese, Argentine, and English heritage, and Black actor Jermaine Fowler and biracial (Black and White) actor Kiersey Clemons play supporting roles.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Kissing and undressing. Implication sex has taken place when two people wake up in bed together -- underwear is seen, and sheets held up to cover breasts. Frequent sexual references -- including oral and anal sex, erections, and masturbation. A person is seen on the toilet (no nudity).

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Am I OK? is a heartfelt romcom-style drama about a 32-year old woman, Lucy ( Dakota Johnson ), who struggles with her sexuality and the impending move of her best friend, Jane ( Sonoya Mizuno ), to another country. There are frequent sexual references, as well as kissing, undressing, and the implication sex has taken place. Strong language includes "f--k" and "s--t," as well as exclamation of "Jesus" and "Christ." Characters drink alcohol to the point of drunkenness, and smoke pot at home on a couple of occasions. Friendship is an important theme, and Lucy and Jane are warm and likable, and there's positive LGBTQ+ representation in front of and behind the camera. What's the Story?

In AM I OK?, Lucy ( Dakota Johnson ) and Jane ( Sonoya Mizuno ) are best friends living in Los Angeles, doing everything together and knowing pretty much everything about each other. But on a night out, Jane announces a big job move and Lucy reveals a personal secret that signals a lot of change for them both. Can the two navigate their friendship through the upheaval while they try to deal with their own inner and outer chaos?

Is It Any Good?

The debut feature from wife-and-wife team Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne lends their impressive combined comedy chops to Lauren Pomerantz's warm, personal script. Inspired by Pomerantz herself coming out in her 30s, Am I OK? merges sweet coming-of-age tenderness with sharp romcom one-liners, but at its core is a really solid film about friendship. The easy on-screen chemistry between Johnson and Mizuno is that of friends who've been close for years and know each other inside out, which makes their intimate moments more touching and their struggles even harder to watch. The supporting cast are great as well, with Jermaine Fowler as Jane's likable boyfriend, Kiersey Clemons as Lucy's buoyant co-worker Brittany, and Sean Hayes making an appearance as her clueless, eccentric boss, Stu. Some moments feel a touch convoluted, and the script occasionally spells things out a little too clearly, but it's a touching movie with plenty to offer beyond just being OK.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Am I OK? centering a 30-something woman coming to terms with her sexuality. Have you seen similar coming out stories about people of her age or older in movies or on TV -- how do they compare? Why do you think the focus tends to be on teens exploring their sexuality more often than adults? Why is it important to see this kind of representation as well?

Friendship is a central theme in the movie. How was Lucy and Jane's friendship portrayed? How did it change during the film? What do you think makes a good friend and a strong friendship generally?

Both the writer and directors of the movie are lesbians. Does that impact how you think about the film -- does it add authenticity to the story? Do you think it's important to have representation behind the camera as well as in front?

Discuss the strong language used. Did it seem necessary or excessive? What did it add to the film?
