Students can use ChatGPT to generate full essays based on a few simple prompts. But can AI actually produce high quality work, or is the technology just not there yet to deliver on its promise? Students may also be asking themselves if they should use AI to write their essays for them and what they might be losing out on if they did.

What is Generative AI?

Artificial intelligence isn’t a twenty-first century invention. Beginning in the 1950s, data scientists started programming computers to solve problems and understand spoken language. But ChatGPT is still in its early stages of development, and that essay is likely not as accurate or well-written as you’d expect it to be. Be aware of the drawbacks of having ChatGPT complete your assignments.

It’s not intelligence, it’s statistics

One of the misconceptions about AI is that it has a degree of human intelligence. However, its intelligence is actually statistical analysis, as it can only generate “original” content based on the patterns it sees in already existing data and work.

If you ask ChatGPT to find and cite sources for you, it will do so, but they could be inaccurate or even made up.

This is because AI doesn’t know how to look for relevant research that can be applied to your thesis. Instead, it generates content based on past content, so if a number of papers cite certain sources, it will generate new content that sounds like it’s a credible source — except it likely may not be.

There are data privacy concerns

When you input your data into a public generative AI model like ChatGPT, where does that data go and who has access to it? 

Prompting ChatGPT with original research should be a cause for concern — especially if you’re inputting study participants’ personal information into the third-party, public application. 

JPMorgan has restricted use of ChatGPT due to privacy concerns, Italy temporarily blocked ChatGPT in March 2023 after a data breach, and Security Intelligence advises that “if [a user’s] notes include sensitive data … it enters the chatbot library. The user no longer has control over the information.”

It is important to be aware of these issues and take steps to ensure that you’re using the technology responsibly and ethically. 

It skirts the plagiarism issue

AI creates content by drawing on a large library of information that’s already been created, but is it plagiarizing? Could there be instances where ChatGPT “borrows” from previous work and places it into your work without citing it? Schools and universities today are wrestling with this question of what’s plagiarism and what’s not when it comes to AI-generated work.

To demonstrate this, one Elon University professor gave his class an assignment: Ask ChatGPT to write an essay for you, and then grade it yourself. 

“Many students expressed shock and dismay upon learning the AI could fabricate bogus information,” he writes, adding that he expected some essays to contain errors, but all of them did. 

His students were disappointed that “major tech companies had pushed out AI technology without ensuring that the general population understands its drawbacks” and were concerned about how many embraced such a flawed tool.

Using ChatGPT (ChattieG) to write good

I’m on sabbatical for the next three months and have committed to doing a literature review on neurodiversity and PhD study. Ugh. I hate doing literature reviews. I’m just going to say it: most academic writing is BORING and doing a big review means reading lots of it. The thought of reading more than 200 papers in 3 months makes me want to poke my eyes out with a pen.

The good news is I can use ChatGPT to help me write this review. There’s something of a moral panic around ChatGPT, or, as my twin sister amusingly calls it: ‘ChattieG’. We’ve heard much about the perils of misinformation and how to stop students cheating. While there are legitimate concerns about ChattieG around privacy, pollution and worker exploitation , I think a lot of the commentary misses the point.

Look, here’s my hot take, for what it’s worth: academics have a responsibility to show others, including our students, how to use these tools responsibly, creatively and ethically. Feeling conflicted about using the technology is reasonable because there is no ethical consumption under late stage billionaire-ist capitalism. While we should continue to critique how this technology is made and used, refusing to engage is not really an option. The genie is well and truly out of the bottle and the robots really will take our jobs if we don’t put ourselves in charge of this technology.

Ok, I will get off my high horse now.

It took me quite some time to work out how to make ChattieG genuinely useful. The rest of this post will document what I have learned so far, but check with your uni before you follow my lead. Here’s the advice from ANU, which is kind of vague and allows for exploration, unlike some others.

Generally, the best way to use ChattieG is to imagine it as a talented, but easily misled, intern/research assistant who has a sad tendency to be sexist, racist and other kinds of ‘isms’.

Instruct it like you would a human being with these shortcomings and you will get much better results. And I know this sounds weird, but it also helps give ChattieG an actual face. I typed in ‘cute, smart intern wearing glasses’ into AI image generator DALLE, and this is what I got:

Of course, ‘cute and smart’ means young white guy (sigh). But I suppose the image is a good reminder of the bias that seems horribly built into AI tools of all stripes. Ok, to the literature review – how can it help?

Brainstorming

You can ask ChattieG to suggest ideas. While ChattieG can be a bullshit fountain , the bigger problem is its ideas are likely to be boringly pedestrian. Boring is not all bad: it can be a starting point for fact checking or to engage in some myth busting.

Let’s see how it does with my basic project idea, which is to help supervisors and universities better support neurodiverse doctoral students:

Prompt: I’m writing a literature review about neurodiversity in doctoral education. Can you list ten things that educators should know about neurodiversity when supervising doctoral students? Please touch on aspects of neurodiversity that can affect how people write, process information, approach deadlines and communicate with others. include a short description with each list item, written in academic style.

Response: Certainly, here are ten key things that educators should know about neurodiversity when supervising doctoral students:

• Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in how human brains process information and perceive the world around us. This includes individuals with conditions such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, and other learning differences.
• Neurodivergent individuals often have unique strengths and abilities that can be leveraged to their advantage in academic settings. For example, some individuals with ADHD have been shown to be highly creative and innovative problem-solvers.
• Neurodivergent individuals may face challenges with executive functioning, which can affect their ability to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Educators should be aware of this and work with students to provide support and accommodations as needed.
• Many neurodivergent individuals have different communication styles and may struggle with social interactions. Educators should be patient, flexible, and willing to adapt their communication strategies to meet the needs of their students.
• Neurodivergent individuals may process information differently than their peers, which can impact their ability to write and articulate their ideas clearly. Educators should work with students to identify strategies for organizing and expressing their thoughts effectively.
• Neurodivergent individuals may benefit from alternative forms of assessment, such as presentations or projects, that allow them to showcase their strengths in non-traditional ways.
• Educators should be aware of the potential for bias and discrimination against neurodivergent individuals in academic settings. They should work to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that celebrates neurodiversity and values diverse perspectives.
• Accommodations such as extended deadlines, quiet study spaces, and assistive technology can make a significant difference for neurodivergent students. Educators should work with students to identify and implement these accommodations as needed.
• It is important for educators to recognize the intersectionality of neurodiversity with other identities such as race, gender, and sexuality. They should be aware of how these factors can impact the experiences of neurodivergent individuals in academic settings.
• Educators should prioritize self-education and ongoing professional development around neurodiversity to ensure that they are providing the best possible support for their students. This may involve attending trainings or workshops, consulting with experts in the field, or engaging in ongoing research and reading.

That’s… not bad. There’s some good ideas here for me to follow up. I particularly like the one on intersectionality, which prompted me to widen my search terms in useful ways.

Use ChattieG to make tiny summaries of key concepts

An important part of note taking is putting other people’s concepts and ideas in your own words. ChattieG can do this for you by simplifying other people’s writing; translating the academic concepts and making them easier to understand. I use this feature to make tiny summaries of interesting ideas from papers I’m reading.

If the text you want to simplify is on the web, you can just point Chattie at the URL and it will do the whole document. But I prefer to use this feature on smaller chunks of text as you get more accurate results. Here’s a bit of text from a paper I found after taking ChattieG’s advice to explore intersectionality: “The Theory Of Intersectionality: A New Lens For Understanding The Barriers Faced By Autistic Women.” by Amanda Saxe published in Canadian Journal of Disability Studies in 2017. I understand these concepts, but the writing is very dense:

“Intersectionality takes into account that “identities are …culturally mediated constructs implicated in relations of power, privilege and oppression” (Liasidou, 2013, p.300). This is directly relevant to the social model of disability, conceptualized by Oliver (1983) in Social Work with Disabled People which proposes that disabilities are the result of societal barriers, rather than inherent deficiencies in the ‘disabled’ person (see also Appleby, 1994; Ballan, 2008; Hirschmann, 2012; Oliver, 1983). Individuals with disabilities face barriers constructed within the able-bodied communities in which they live (Ballan, 2008; Hirschmann, 2012; Oliver, 1983). They could lead ‘normal’ lives should these barriers (both physical and social) be removed, since it is these barriers that disable them (Hirschmann, 2012). Throughout history, Autism has been seen through a medicalized lens, where individuals with the disorder were viewed as deficient and abnormal (Bumiller, 2008). The neurodiversity movement has since emerged through the work of Autistic self-advocates, promoting the argument that Autism is the result of a difference in neurology which should be accepted as a form of human diversity”

Let’s see how ChattieG goes simplifying the key concept in this paragraph. You could just say ‘summarise’ and give it the text, but remember it’s better to talk to it like a research assistant. Tell Chattie what the source paper is about as well as reading level and style of output. I find instructing it to simply to a 9th grader level in academic style gives consistently good results:

Prompt: I’m going to give you some text from an academic paper about intersectionality and autism. Can you please produce a simplified version of this text. Make it to a 9th grader level, still in academic style: [text inserted here in quotation marks]

Response: Intersectionality is a way of looking at how different parts of a person’s identity, like their gender, race, and disability, can affect how they’re treated. People with disabilities have faced barriers to living a “normal” life because society isn’t set up to accommodate their needs. This idea is called the social model of disability. It says that disabilities are not caused by something that’s wrong with the person, but by the way society is set up. In the past, autism was thought of as a problem that needed to be fixed. But now, people with autism are saying that it’s just a different way of thinking and that this should be celebrated as a form of human diversity.

An important part of the note taking process is what I call ‘rambling’ – just typing out my thoughts for an audience of one: me. Rambling is a way of getting ideas out of my head and onto the screen so I can assess whether they are any good. Chattie is brilliant for taking these rambles and turning them into something… less shit.

Prompt: I’m going to give you some of my rough notes about how neurotypicals process information compared to people with ADHD. Can you rewrite these notes as the discussion section of a paper about the differences between how people with ADHD work, vs people with neurotypical functioning: “I’m going to give you my rough notes on what it’s like to work with ADHD. Can you turn these notes into an introduction to an academic paper? “I list each segment of the event in a table and then write the tasks associated with each part of the event. As I do this, I must imagine – literally walk through each part of the event in my mind. This is DMN in action, then I flip back to TPN to put the task into words on a page. Then I must imagine a future flow of work where I can do these tasks – which one needs to be done before the other, are there dependencies? I then flip to my diary and look at the work that is coming up – are there any ‘big rocks’ that are going to get in the way? Can I schedule this work or must I delegate it. I then have to imagine my co-worker’s flow of work and tasks. I have to imagine the physicality of doing something like a stocktake of our tea and coffee supplies and how that might fit into her schedule, which I see visualised in the team diary. When I look at my work this way I wonder how I EVER get things done. And yet I do. For me, this work is effortful, but not difficult. But to a person with ADHD with the faulty switch between these different cognitive processes, it’s really difficult. They can get ‘stuck’ in the past, not the future – remembering a previous event rather than imagining a future one. If something went wrong on that previous event, they may get stuck in rumination about it. Although they want to get on with their task list, it’s a conscious thing to try and switch out of DMN and back into TPN.”

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in executive functioning, attention, and working memory. Individuals with ADHD often experience challenges in organizing and completing tasks, particularly in complex work environments. This section will discuss some of the differences between how individuals with ADHD process information compared to neurotypical individuals and the implications of these differences for work activities.

One notable difference is the way individuals with ADHD break down complex tasks. As noted in the introduction, individuals with ADHD may engage in a cognitive process that involves breaking down events into smaller parts and imagining each segment in detail in their mind. This process requires them to switch back and forth between two cognitive networks, the default mode network (DMN) and the task-positive network (TPN). Neurotypical individuals may not engage in this process to the same extent, relying more on internal scripts and past experiences to guide their actions.

Another difference is the way individuals with ADHD handle distractions. Neurotypical individuals may be better able to filter out irrelevant information and focus on the task at hand. In contrast, individuals with ADHD may struggle to ignore distractions, leading to difficulties in sustaining attention and completing tasks.

These differences in cognitive processing can have significant implications for work activities. For example, individuals with ADHD may benefit from accommodations such as breaking tasks into smaller steps, providing regular feedback, and reducing distractions in the work environment. Additionally, it may be helpful to provide training on time management and organizational skills, as well as access to assistive technologies that can support executive functioning.

In conclusion, individuals with ADHD may process information differently compared to neurotypical individuals, particularly in terms of breaking down complex tasks and handling distractions. By understanding these differences and providing appropriate support, employers can create a more inclusive and productive work environment for individuals with ADHD. Future research can build on this work by exploring additional strategies for supporting individuals with ADHD in the workplace and evaluating the effectiveness of current accommodations and interventions.

Look, it got some of that wrong, but it’s easy to correct and not terrible. Now, here’s a neat trick my sister Anitra (who is a power ChattieG user) taught me, which you can have for free. When you have some of your rambling translated into prose, tell Chattie to keep making stuff up and see what happens. Some of it will be terrible, but it’s worth seeing where it will go with the ideas.

It’s a simple one word command this time:

Prompt: continue

Response: Further research could also investigate the role of cognitive processing in other areas of work, such as decision-making, creativity, and problem-solving. While individuals with ADHD may experience challenges in some aspects of cognitive processing, they may also demonstrate strengths in other areas, such as divergent thinking and innovation.

It is also important to note that not all individuals with ADHD will experience the same challenges or strengths in the workplace. The impact of ADHD on work performance may depend on various factors, such as the severity of symptoms, the type of work involved, and the individual’s coping strategies and support systems.

Finally, this discussion highlights the need for greater awareness and understanding of ADHD in the workplace and society at large. By promoting education and awareness about ADHD, we can reduce stigma and misunderstandings and create a more supportive and inclusive environment for individuals with ADHD and other neurodivergent traits.

In conclusion, this discussion highlights some of the differences between how individuals with ADHD process information compared to neurotypical individuals and the implications of these differences for work activities. By understanding and addressing these differences, employers can create a more inclusive and productive work environment for individuals with ADHD.

Similarly to the initial brainstorming, Chattie is largely giving me banal ideas, but I like the point it makes about difference in the first paragraph.

Again, I wouldn’t use this text exactly as its given – for me, this is part of a creative process towards a first draft. I’ll end up rewriting this text completely I suspect, but ChattieG definitely reduced some of the cognitive ‘heavy lifting’.

I suspect people will have Feelpinions about using ChattieG this way… as My friend Dr Jason Downs pointed out to me in one of our podcasts : academics have been trained not to accept help with thinking work.

We award PhDs in recognition that people are capable of independent thought and knowledge making. Using a machine to help generate ideas feels… weird and wrong. Mind you, I would have no problem if the ideas were a result of a conversation with other humans. Is using ChattieG to continue a thought ‘cheating’, or leveraging a technology to extend thinking in a way that was previously not possible? I’m still trying to work that one out.

Use ChattieG to improve your existing prose.

I love Grammarly for cleaning up text, but it feels like a lot of work compared to cleaning text with ChattieG. In our book ‘ How to fix your academic writing trouble ‘, Katherine, Shaun and I discuss how to use insights from linguistics to help make prose sound more ‘academic’. Here’s some prompts I wrote, using our book, to automagically apply some of these principles to your prose:

• Rewrite this text with less nominalised verbs [or, rewrite with more nominalised verbs]: [insert text]
• Rewrite and reduce instances of the following words: Is, Am, Are, Was, Were, Be, Being, Been and the word ‘that’: [insert text]
• Rewrite this paragraph, introducing more bridging sentences to increase clarity [insert text]
• In the following sentence, please identify the theme and the rheme: [insert sentence]. Follow up prompt: Rewrite the previous sentence to make the connection between the theme and rheme clearer.
• Please provide me with a list of conjunctive phrases to link ideas that have a [particular kind of logical relationship, eg ‘cause and effect’, ‘comparison’, ‘contrast’] relationship.

I’ve been mucking around automating my note taking in other ways by plugging ChattieG into Obsidian with the TextGenerator and SmartConnections  (thanks Peter Hayes!), but that’s a post for another time. I have topped 3000 words already!

I’m so honoured to be staying in the house of the late Professor Adam Kendon while I am in the UK on sabbatical. I read (and cited) so much of Dr Kendon’s ground breaking work on hand gestures when I did my own PhD thesis nearly 20 years ago. I wrote to Dr Kendon after I finished my PhD and remember his generosity and kindness to me, as a young, nervous scholar. His example of collegiality has long stood out as a model for me. His personal library here is astonishing and it’s honestly the experience of a lifetime to be sitting and writing this at the desk of one of my academic heroes. Big thanks to the Kendon family for lending Mr Thesiswhisperer and I this beautiful house.

Hey guys, I'm using chatGPT since a few days and I really love it. I just started to chat about some economical and theoretical topics and I wondered about a bachelor thesis written by AI. That said, by writing stuff down, you miss out on the perks of digital notes. ChatGPT helps you get the best of both worlds.

When OpenAI supercharged the free version of ChatGPT with GPT-4o in May, users gained the ability to upload files, including images and documents, and to interact with images in multiple ways, such as extracting text.

This means you can upload handwritten documents, from sticky notes to meeting and class notes to packing lists, and convert them into text. Then, you can use that text to create new content by copying and pasting it into presentations, emails, outlines, essays, Quizlets , and more.

Sounds too good to be true? I thought the same, but after testing the tool, I can assure you that it works efficiently and quickly. Getting started is simple, and you will not want to stop once you start.

1. Log in to your OpenAI account 

If you haven't created an account, click on Sign Up. Otherwise, log in with your OpenAI credentials.

Even though you can access ChatGPT without creating an OpenAI account , you need to sign in to access GPT-4o and its many perks, including image uploads. The good news is that creating an account is easy, and the perks are well worth it.

If you don't have a ChatGPT account, you can easily create one on the sign-in page. You can also log in with your existing Google or Microsoft account. I opted for the latter option, so I don't have to memorize another username and password. 

2. Upload your image 

Once you log in, you will be brought to the ChatGPT interface with a blank text box. Next to the text box, you will find a paperclip icon, which you can click on to upload your photo from several different sources, including Google Drive , Microsoft OneDrive , or your computer.

I wouldn't worry about what your text looks like. I uploaded a sticky note I wrote over the weekend in cursive, as seen below, and ChatGPT had no problem understanding and outputting the text.

If you add the picture with no text prompt, ChatGPT will most often automatically extract the text and present it to you, typed out. To ensure the chatbot knows what to do, however, I recommend adding a simple text prompt like, "Can you extract the text from this image?" and then hitting enter.

3. Use your text for whatever you need

Once ChatGPT outputs the extracted text, you can check to ensure the output accurately represents your text. In every instance I have tried, the chatbot has been word-for-word correct. Then, you can copy and paste the text wherever you'd like. Some use cases include presentations, emails, virtual sticky notes, and outlines.

ChatGPT vs. Me: Who Will Write a Better Beach Read?

What makes a beach read a beach read? Is it an escapist subject matter? A frothy tone? Or is any book you read on a beach automatically a beach read?

I’m the author of seven novels and one short-story collection, and I have no idea what the answer is to these questions. But in an attempt to figure them out, I’ve agreed to participate in an experiment, and I hope you’ll join me.

I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite elements of summer, along with other topics I like to write about. Please vote on which items you would most want included in a summery short story — your ideal beach read — and submit your own suggestion, too. I’ll then write a story that includes the top three vote getters and two elements I choose from readers. And because it’s 2024 and life is now weird all the time, so will ChatGPT. Which will help us answer another pressing question: What’s the difference between human and machine writing?

Both stories will be the same length (1,000 words), and both will incorporate the same five prompts. ChatGPT, which will be told to write in my style, will complete its story in a few seconds; I’ll complete mine in a few weeks.

I’m curious about whether, in its current iteration, ChatGPT can write fiction I’d want to read or aspire to write. Can it write like me specifically? What does writing like me even mean? I’m one of the many fiction writers whose novels were used, without my permission and without compensation, to train ChatGPT. (I confess that I was offended in one way that five of my books were used and offended in a different way that two of them — the two that sold the least and received the worst reviews — weren’t.) Groups of fiction writers have sued OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, for copyright infringement. The New York Times has sued Microsoft and OpenAI over the use of copyrighted work.

So it may go without saying that in this contest, I’m rooting for myself; I’m Team Human, and I’m hoping to honorably defend my species. But as with the steel-driving John Henry and the chess-playing Garry Kasparov before me, the outcome is unknown in advance. Maybe fiction writers’ jobs are in danger, or maybe there’s some ineffable quality, similar to the transcendent quality of a beach read, that still separates a story told by a person from a story told by a computer.

Perplexity , described as a “Swiss Army Knife for information discovery and curiosity,” is essentially an AI-enhanced search tool.

It combines ChatGPT and Google Search elements , yet it isn’t a direct substitute for either. The platform is similar to the direction Google is taking with Gemini, but appears to be less chaotic .

It provides a list of websites relevant to your query, along with a concise summary answer and the sources used to generate it. Sometimes, the summary alone suffices, while other times, you might explore the various sources for deeper insight.

Although Perplexity cannot fully replace traditional search engines, it proves to be surprisingly functional and effective within its limits. It’s even been hailed by the likes of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos .

Who owns Perplexity?

Perplexity, founded in 2022, was co-created by Aravind Srinivas , Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski, all engineers with expertise in AI , machine learning , and back-end systems.

Yarats is the current CTO and previously was an AI research scientist at Meta. CEO Srinivas has a background with OpenAI as an AI researcher. Chief Strategy Officer Ho has experience as an engineer at Quora and a quantitative trader on Wall Street. Konwinski was part of the initial team at Databricks.

By 2024, Perplexity successfully secured $165 million in funding, reaching a valuation exceeding $1 billion. Its investors include prominent figures and firms such as Bezos, Nvidia, Databricks, Bessemer Venture Partners, Susan Wojcicki, Jeff Dean, Yann LeCun, Andrej Karpathy, Nat Friedman, and Garry Tan.

What is Perplexity AI used for?

Perplexity works like an advanced chatbot , answering queries while seamlessly integrating recent articles. It indexes the web daily, so you can ask about the latest news, sports scores, and other common search topics. This indexing capacity is so effective that it can provide real-time updates, like the latest scores from Wimbledon , which we tested out.

The platform, which the company describes as continuously updating, also remembers the context of each interaction, storing them as “Threads.” This means any previously provided information is considered in subsequent queries. It also suggests “Related” search queries to expand your exploration.

What sets Perplexity apart is its transparency with sources. It lists references and provides footnotes for every piece of information, making it a viable alternative to traditional search engines. You can explore deeper into any topic rather than just accepting the AI-generated explanation, which isn’t always correct.

How to use Perplexity AI

To maximize your interaction with Perplexity, here are three main tips.

Use the platform’s smart search functionality

Use the platform’s smart search functionality to upload files for a detailed context or use two to three keywords for simpler queries. This approach lets you quickly find the answers you need.

Personalize your experience

Secondly, personalize your experience by adjusting settings in your AI Profile, such as language, output format, and tone, making Perplexity more tailored to your preferences.

Manage your privacy

Finally, manage your privacy and collaboration effectively. Your interactions, by default, remain private, but you can opt to share them publicly. Use Threads and Collections for teamwork or conduct shared research, customizing these features to suit your requirements.

• Quick Search delivers rapid, straightforward answers
• Pro Search explores deeper, tailoring responses to the specifics of your question. It may even pose follow-up questions to refine its responses further.

The main thing is that the process remains consistent. It understands the query, searches for relevant information across websites and articles, and then summarizes the findings.

For instance, we inquired about the benefits of consuming five fruits and vegetables daily, Perplexity used its large language model (LLM) to interpret our interest in health benefits. It then found authoritative health sites discussing these benefits, providing a succinct summary.

Both Quick and Pro searches offer similar information, though Pro Search might explore topics more thoroughly or provide specific dietary recommendations. Perplexity also developed its responses with images and videos and even allows users to generate custom images, making the experience far more interactive.

Does Perplexity AI use GPT?

Perplexity relies on several large language models (LLMs) to deliver its natural language processing features. This ensemble includes models like GPT-4 , Claude 3 , Mistral , and custom models developed by Perplexity itself. These LLMs are important for accurately interpreting user queries and providing concise summaries of the relevant information.

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT?

If you’re turning to Google, Bing, or another search engine for answers, Perplexity can probably work as well. It tends to be better than traditional search engines by providing quick responses and is far more reliable than other chatbots when providing useful responses. Google Gemini offers a similar experience but Perplexity has some advantages.

Typical chatbot queries generally include tasks like trip planning and recipe fetching, however, the results sometimes appear to be subpar. Perplexity improves on these by pulling data from multiple web sources instead of relying only on an LLM, which means there is more reliable information. You can also check out the original articles it summarizes, adding an extra layer of verification.

What’s rather useful is its handling of information. For example, when we presented it with the challenging request to “ Give me a recipe for someone with a diet that is pescatarian, diabetic, gluten-free and lactose-free ,” Perplexity was able to it was able to provide a detailed and accurate response by mixing a group of sources.

A newly introduced Pro Search feature has made its AI capabilities with multi-step reasoning even more effective, as it can now link together multiple searches. This upgrade was first made available to web and iOS users last week and has now been extended to Android as well.

Pro Search can also now solve mathematical problems through an integration with Wolfram Alpha and to execute code, so it can compute far more challenging equations.

Perplexity AI features

Powered by a large language model (LLM), it has a few more advanced features that fare better than a traditional search engine:

• Using its Pro search, it engages with users by asking clarifying questions to refine results, removing the need for you to constantly manually adjust your search terms. Users can easily ask follow-up questions or request modifications to the answers provided. Perplexity also supports documents and images, providing more comprehensive results
• Perplexity is also able to generate images relevant to any queries or create text based on the information it retrieves
• It also lets you organize searches—or “Threads”—into collections of related ideas, apply specific prompts to each Thread within a collection, and even share particular Threads with others.

The platform is accessible through mobile apps and two Chrome extensions. One of the extensions adds Perplexity as your default search engine while the other integrates its functionalities into any web page, so users can summarize content or answer queries directly from the site you’re viewing.

Is Perplexity reliable?

Though it is not yet a complete replacement for traditional search engines or general AI chatbots, it does a good job of gathering, presenting, and organizing information.

That being said, Perplexity’s team claims that they’ve taken steps to ensure accuracy. However, like all LLMs, Perplexity occasionally hallucinates details .

When searching for this journalist’s name, it incorrectly claimed that I had “ experience in the film industry, having worked on an Oscar-nominated film ,” which was sadly not true. Nonetheless, it did accurately provide a significant amount of information.

While such errors are not entirely unexpected, they showcase that although Perplexity is pretty good at accessing recent information and disclosing its sources, it is not infallible.

Is Perplexity AI free?

Perplexity is currently accessible via its web app, mobile applications, and a Chrome extension. You can begin Quick Searches at no cost and without needing to register an account.

For more advanced searching capabilities, Perplexity Pro is available for $20/month, giving users access to hundreds of Pro Searches a day.

However, the updated Pro Search feature is not yet available in all areas.

To check if it’s available in your region, enter a detailed query and click the Pro Search toggle. If Perplexity does not break up the query into multiple searches, it means that the feature has not been enabled in your area.

Programmers have spent decades writing code for AI models , and now, in a full circle moment, AI is being used to write code. But how does an AI code generator compare to a human programmer?

A study published in the June issue of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering evaluated the code produced by OpenAI’s ChatGPT in terms of functionality, complexity and security. The results show that ChatGPT has an extremely broad range of success when it comes to producing functional code—with a success rate ranging from anywhere as poor as 0.66 percent and as good as 89 percent—depending on the difficulty of the task, the programming language, and a number of other factors.

While in some cases the AI generator could produce better code than humans, the analysis also reveals some security concerns with AI-generated code.

Yutian Tang is a lecturer at the University of Glasgow who was involved in the study. He notes that AI-based code generation could provide some advantages in terms of enhancing productivity and automating software development tasks—but it’s important to understand the strengths and limitations of these models.

“By conducting a comprehensive analysis, we can uncover potential issues and limitations that arise in the ChatGPT-based code generation... [and] improve generation techniques,” Tang explains.

To explore these limitations in more detail, his team sought to test GPT-3.5’s ability to address 728 coding problems from the LeetCode testing platform in five programming languages: C, C++, Java, JavaScript, and Python .

Overall, ChatGPT was fairly good at solving problems in the different coding languages—but especially when attempting to solve coding problems that existed on LeetCode before 2021. For instance, it was able to produce functional code for easy, medium, and hard problems with success rates of about 89, 71, and 40 percent, respectively.

“However, when it comes to the algorithm problems after 2021, ChatGPT’s ability to generate functionally correct code is affected. It sometimes fails to understand the meaning of questions, even for easy level problems,” Tang notes.

For example, ChatGPT’s ability to produce functional code for “easy” coding problems dropped from 89 percent to 52 percent after 2021. And its ability to generate functional code for “hard” problems dropped from 40 percent to 0.66 percent after this time as well.

“A reasonable hypothesis for why ChatGPT can do better with algorithm problems before 2021 is that these problems are frequently seen in the training dataset,” Tang says.

Essentially, as coding evolves, ChatGPT has not been exposed yet to new problems and solutions. It lacks the critical thinking skills of a human and can only address problems it has previously encountered. This could explain why it is so much better at addressing older coding problems than newer ones.

Interestingly, ChatGPT is able to generate code with smaller runtime and memory overheads than at least 50 percent of human solutions to the same LeetCode problems.

The researchers also explored the ability of ChatGPT to fix its own coding errors after receiving feedback from LeetCode. They randomly selected 50 coding scenarios where ChatGPT initially generated incorrect coding, either because it didn’t understand the content or problem at hand.

While ChatGPT was good at fixing compiling errors, it generally was not good at correcting its own mistakes.

“ChatGPT may generate incorrect code because it does not understand the meaning of algorithm problems, thus, this simple error feedback information is not enough,” Tang explains.

The researchers also found that ChatGPT-generated code did have a fair amount of vulnerabilities, such as a missing null test, but many of these were easily fixable. Their results also show that generated code in C was the most complex, followed by C++ and Python, which has a similar complexity to the human-written code.

Tangs says, based on these results, it’s important that developers using ChatGPT provide additional information to help ChatGPT better understand problems or avoid vulnerabilities.

“For example, when encountering more complex programming problems, developers can provide relevant knowledge as much as possible, and tell ChatGPT in the prompt which potential vulnerabilities to be aware of,” Tang says.
