PhD program video placeholder

Video Transcript

Baris Ata (00:00): When I came here, it felt like, "Now I'm in the major leagues." I realized how high the standards are.

Jane L. Risen (00:09): We're the oldest PhD program within a business school, which is pretty extraordinary to think of sort of how long ago the recognition was there that we wanted to be training not just business leaders in practice, but to be training the future leaders of academic discipline.

Ray Ball (00:26): So I arrived in 1966. Oh, it was marvelous. The place just crackled with ideas and open discussion, and I ended up throwing out all the ideas I came with.

Ann L. McGill (00:35): What I especially liked about learning things here is this is an interdisciplinary school, so you didn't have to dive in a silo. You can wrap your arms around huge areas.

Marianne Bertrand (00:46): What is special is that we are part of a business school, training PhD students across a range of disciplines, not just economics or finance, which we deploy in the Economics Department, but also students are doing psychology, operation research.

Ray Ball (00:59): At Chicago, the ideas were the authorities, not the people, and they were all up for grabs.

Amir Sufi (01:06): What we're trying to create here is people who produce knowledge, not just consume it. And that's the real challenge I think of PhD education.

Ana-Maria Tenekedjieva (01:15): I was never told at any point that, "Oh, this is not real finance. This question is too outside of the box." On the contrary, it was always, "You should do what you want to do, and we're going to think about placement once the paper is ready."

Jane L. Risen (01:32): You don't make any assumptions. You question everything.

Pradeep K. Chintagunta (01:35): It's not enough just to know what other people have done. It's also important to know what needs to be done next. To be able to do that, you need to be able to ask questions beyond the questions that have been asked in the previous literature or in the previous knowledge that's already out there.

Jeffrey R. Russell (01:53): When you're going to seminars here, or watching my colleagues talk in the hallways, you'll often see them in what look like very contentious battles. But really, they're just after, "What's the right answer?" When PhD students come here, they are able to sort of bring that into their own souls, and I think that really pushes them then to sort of be the best possible researcher that they can.

Ana-Maria Tenekedjieva (02:12): Chicago Booth is known for its quite aggressive questioning style. I think that we get a little bit of a bad rap. There is a point to the aggressive questioning, and it is to clarify the idea. In Chicago Booth the spirit is be tough on the idea, not on the person.

Amir Sufi (02:30): Throughout the world, we're appreciating more and more how influential research can be. I think our PhD students going forward will increasingly be placed in positions, both in scholarship and in government and in business, where they can have major influence.

Ray Ball (02:48): So the fact that this is the oldest doctoral program in business, that it has been going for 100 years, gives some indication of the commitment of this school to training people. We still have those same values, and so it's always going to generate people who change the world, who change the way we think. I can't tell you at this point how that will happen. That's exactly the idea. New people come in with new ideas, and they learn how to implement them in the school, and they change the way we think about the world. And that's going to keep going.

PhD Program Overview

  • The Ben Bernanke Prize in Financial and Monetary Economics

Princeton’s Bendheim Center for Finance provides a second home for Ph.D. students interested in finance and related fields.

Princeton BCF does not directly admit Ph.D. students. Typically, Ph.D. students working with Princeton BCF faculty were admitted by the Department of Economics , the Department of ORFE , or the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics .

In order to foster interaction and mentorship, Ph.D. students who have passed their general examination and are working with Princeton BCF faculty are provided a carrel space in close proximity to the faculty. A wee kly Student Research Seminar gives students the opportunity to present their work and receive first-hand feedback from faculty and fellow students.

Princeton BCF Ph.D. Student Directory

The Ph.D. student(s) with the best draft of a job market paper for the upcoming job market will receive at the end of April the Ben Bernanke Prize in Financial and Monetary Economics.

Shaun Jones (he/him/his)

Phd student, department of epidemiology, gillings school of public health.

Hometown: Fayetteville, North Carolina

Email: [email protected]

About Shaun: I am a first year PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. I recently earned my MPH in Applied Epidemiology from the UNC Gillings School in May. I am a Barbara K. Rimer Cancer Fellow with UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and a health education associate/research assistant with the Duke Cancer Institute Community Outreach Engagement and Equity Office. I previously earned my Bachelor's in Cultural Anthropology and Biology from Duke University in 2017 before working in the Duke University School of Medicine's Psychiatry Department as a clinical researcher. My passions include tobacco cessation, Black and LGBTQ+ health, and eliminating health disparities in several areas including, but not limited to, cancer and nutrition. I ultimately plan to utilize mixed method approaches through epidemiologic data analysis and health education programming to combat issues affecting marginalized communities. I currently serve as a community advisory board member for Duke Cancer Institute and Durham's Community Health Coalition and as the co-President of the Black Graduate & Professional Student Association at UNC. In my downtime, you can find me hiking, bowling, and trying new restaurants.

Advice for incoming students: You deserve to be here! Take every opportunity to learn from your peers, professors and the community.

About Danya: My name is Danya Krueger, and I am a second-year PhD student in the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work and a Graduate Research Assistant with the UNC-BHWRC. You can find me spending all my non-academic time with my husband and dogs.

Advice for incoming students: Your first year will feel like a roller coaster ride, with several high and low points. In the midst of the low points, remember the ride will peak again—you were accepted, and you deserve to be here. Find your people in and out of the program and lean on them. Hometown: Dumfries, Virginia

Email: [email protected]

About Melissa: Prior to returning to work in global health at UNC in 2017 and balancing my classes as an MPH student in the Nutrition concentration, I earned my culinary arts degree in New York City at the International Culinary Center (formerly the French Culinary Institute). My husband and I moved to Chapel Hill for my job as an assistant cheesemaker and cheesemonger. We have a cat daughter named Honey, five beehives and a garden of vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Advice for incoming students:  It has been a long journey leaning on my support system of family, friends and mentors to get where I am today and persevering towards my degree. Lindner launches AI in Business graduate certificate

Students learn ai skills, how to deploy them to solve business problems.

headshot of Grant Freking

The Carl H. Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati has announced the addition of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Business graduate certificate, which focuses on empowering students with the means to leverage AI platforms for developing solutions to business problems.

Lindner graduate certificates allow students to gain specialized business knowledge to boost their career options. AI in Business can be completed in two to three semesters (nine to 12 months) of study and can be taken as a standalone certificate while also easily paired with the  Lindner MBA ,  Master of Science in Business Analytics  or the  Master of Science in Information Systems  programs.

AI in Business, which can be fulfilled via in-person and online modalities, is accepting applications for the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters. While no previous experience with AI tools is required, a basic background in Python programming and information systems is helpful.

Sachin Modi, PhD, professor and head of Lindner’s department of operations, business analytics, and information systems.

“AI is becoming a big part of business, and a lot of people want to upskill on AI quickly and learn how to apply AI to business,” said Sachin Modi , PhD, professor and head of Lindner’s department of operations, business analytics, and information systems . “The intent of the certificate is to equip students with the correct tools and techniques to achieve this.”

AI in Business provides students with flexibility; hands-on experiential learning opportunities with the latest AI tools; access to expert faculty who are working on and researching AI’s latest business applications; and a connection to Lindner's 50,000-strong alumni network, who can aid certificate recipients in landing job placements in a rapidly growing talent field.

The curriculum features four required two-credit-hour courses, plus four elective credit hours (from seven elective course options) that must be completed. AI in Business syncs up with job opportunities across business fields , from data scientists, business analysts, financial advisers and investment managers, to marketing managers, information systems managers, and operations and supply chain managers.

“The core courses take you from relatively little to no knowledge of AI to having a good understanding of how to design and deploy AI solutions,” Modi said. “The elective courses put you on two possible tracks — a more managerial path or a more developmental path.”

The graduate certificate application deadline for fall 2024 semester enrollment is July 31. For the spring 2025 semester, the priority deadline is Oct. 15, with the final deadline on Dec. 1.

Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering

Students typically complete the Ph.D. degree requirements in three to five years. Early in the program, students focus on course-work that enhances their knowledge as they prepare to conduct research.

Within one year, students must pass the departmental qualifying exam, an oral exam that tests research skills and knowledge of a core mechanical engineering subject area.

Student research forms the core of the Ph.D. program. Research involves active student-directed inquiry into an engineering problem, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense.

Ph.D. Financial Support

The majority of full-time Ph.D. students accepted through the standard application process receive fellowships that cover full tuition, the technology fee, and a stipend for living expenses for up to five years, as long as sufficient progress is made toward degree completion. These awards are sufficient to cover all expenses for the year (including summers). Students are required to pay for health insurance, the transportation fee, the activity fee, books, and course supplies. Off-campus housing is available within walking distance of campus. At least one year of residency is required for the Ph.D. We offer two ways to enter the Ph.D. program.
