The Medical Education master’s program prepares healthcare professionals to be teachers of medical educators, educational scholars, and leaders who influence and inspire others to learn in undergraduate and graduate medical and healthcare programs. Our two-year program trains physicians and other healthcare professionals in the science of education while remaining solidly grounded in the medical environment. The executive format includes on-site classes over long weekends, independent study, and online sessions.

Participants complete four learning blocks over four semesters: Learning and Technology, Educational Research, Leadership, and Master’s Capstone. Virtual coaching clinics are coordinated with each of the program blocks. These clinics hone students’ online teaching abilities and collaborative learning skills, and help students complete their block assignments.

Prepare to teach medical educators : Gain an understanding of how adults learn, how to develop effective and efficient educational experiences in medical education, and how to teach others to do the same. Prepare to take on the many challenges facing medical educators, including assessment, curricular design, and integrating educational technologies into all types of learning experiences.

Become a medical education researcher : Gain the skills and knowledge to meet the growing need for research and innovation in medical education. Learn how to evaluate programs and publish your research in this area.

Grow into a leadership role at your healthcare organization or medical school : Influence and inspire others to learn. Develop the leadership competencies to plan, implement, and maintain successful, sustainable programs. Acquire leadership skills and tools that are highly relevant to medical education.

Admission to the Medical Education master’s program is offered every two years. The application for the Fall 2026 cohort will be available on September 1, 2025.

Our curriculum is designed to integrate the expertise of professional educators with the perspective of clinicians. Created for adult learners, the program is active, engaging, and experiential. We provide the newest thinking and scholarship in a variety of learning formats.

Our Master of Education (M.S.Ed.) requires completion of four blocks, each composed of on-site large-group and synchronous remote small-group sessions in the following areas:

  • Learning and Technology:  The Learning and Technology block introduces participants to theories of, and research on, learning, curriculum, instruction and technology in medical education. It connects the theories and research to learning and technology practices in the academic medical and healthcare contexts. In addition, participants will develop a deeper understanding of common educational challenges such as learner assessment, curricular development, and pedagogical techniques.
  • Educational Research:  Inquiry and investigation are central to refining and advancing education in medicine and healthcare. Leaders in medical education must also be skilled in program evaluation, which requires research. During the course of the Educational Research block, participants will become familiar with evaluation tools and techniques, qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, and pragmatic aspects of educational scholarship such as proposal development and publishing research.
  • Leadership:  The Leadership block provides an opportunity to explore concepts such as emotional intelligence, how to influence and motivate others, group and classroom dynamics, power dynamics, organizational change, and the impact of organizational culture on leading and learning in complex systems. Central to this block is the understanding that people with advanced training in education will be called upon to develop and administer programs, which requires leadership skills that few in medicine are ever taught.
  • Master’s Capstone:  The Master’s Capstone allows students to design their own paper and/or project based on needs in their individual workplaces. The project/paper structure is clearly outlined by program directors and supported through synchronous and asynchronous online sessions with faculty and students.

Virtual coaching clinics are coordinated with each of the four blocks of the program, and there are three or four clinics per block. The clinics hone students’ online teaching abilities and collaborative learning skills, and help students complete their block assignments. Clinic time is an essential part of teaching and learning in medical education, and coaching supports knowledge retention and skill acquisition. By harnessing technology, the Med Ed program provides students with small group teaching and learning experiences in the virtual world, overseen by experienced and trained coaches.

Teach for Impact with Your MEd in Secondary Education

Make an impact on the lives of middle and high school students through content knowledge you love while learning essential transdisciplinary knowledge and skills in the  Master of Education in Secondary Education program.

This full-time, New Hampshire based MEd program was designed to prepare you to become a secondary school classroom teacher while instilling a transdisciplinary mindset. At the end of this program, you’ll have earned a teaching certification specializing in 1 of 5 content areas:

  • English language arts for grades 5-12
  • Mathematics teaching – middle level
  • Mathematics teaching – upper level
  • Science for grades 5-8
  • Social studies for grades 5-12

In addition, every candidate earns a Certificate in STEM Education including two STEM EDU digital badges. With a June start every year, this master’s degree program is a campus cohort, residency-based model that is four 16-week terms. This program strongly supports candidates’ development of equity, inclusion, and cultural competence. Our partner district is Manchester, NH and during the school year, members are partnered full-time with a mentor teacher in their certification area. During the summers, members work with 5-12 students in a summer camp-based experience. Each term the trio of SNHU faculty, along with the Manchester school-based Clinical Educator, support candidates to grow and develop their commitment to students, content knowledge, and teaching skills.

SNHU requires an undergraduate major (or substantial course work) in the intended licensure area and an undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 (or equivalent) for admission.

The good news is, employment of secondary teachers is projected to grow by 8% from 2020 to 2030, with about 77,400 openings across the country each year, on average, over the course of the decade. And more good news, with your newly earned Certificate in STEM Education, you can take advantage of the benefits of having STEM experience on your resume. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also projects that occupations in the STEM field are expected to grow by 10.5% through 2030. So, this program is all around a great option if you are seeking teacher certification in a middle or high school.

The MEd in Secondary Education program at SNHU is competency-driven, ensuring graduates of this program are prepared to teach in the growing number of New Hampshire schools that have adopted a competency-based approach to teaching and learning, so you’ll be ready for a career in the classroom.

Through the AmeriCorps program  called Manchester Excels, students are eligible to receive scholarships, stipends and other benefits throughout their enrollment.

First Term Benefits:

Students will receive a $3,000 stipend and an Education Award/tuition scholarship of $1,459.26 for the summer term through Goodwill/AmeriCorps.

For the remaining three terms, based on availability and securing grant funding, members may be co-enrolled in order to receive larger financial benefits.

Additional Benefits for Those Who Qualify:

Starting in term two, each student who is co-enrolled in our Manchester Excels partnership with AmeriCorps can receive the benefits outlined below, provided they meet certain AmeriCorps requirements.*

  • Living allowance of up to $19,000, paid biweekly throughout service term.
  • Education Award of $7,395 upon successful completion of AmeriCorps term (this can be used to pay off Federally-qualified student loans and/or for current/continuing education costs at a Title IV institution).
  • Health insurance through SNHU if eligible.
  • Childcare reimbursement through AmeriCorps if eligible.

*(Note: SNHU Program requirements count as volunteer hours; additional requirements include training (e.g., to fill out a timesheet, cultural diversity) and “days of service” (e.g. 9/11, MLK day). Other students accepted into the program may be waitlisted for any AmeriCorps benefits.

Program Requirements Summer 2023 – from June 2nd through the end of August 2023 Members are required to complete 300 hours (240 in service and 60 in training) during this summer term. A living allowance of up to $3,000 evenly divided over the course of the 300-hour term (approximately $500 biweekly before taxes). The MEd in Secondary Education is a 36-credit, 16-month clinical master’s in education program. You’ll engage with grade 5-12 students from the start of the program, spending a full school year working alongside practicing educators in local schools.

During the summer, you will develop project-based learning activities, and then work with middle and high school students during a summer learning program sponsored by SNHU. By the end of the program, you will have earned a Graduate Certificate in Trans-Disciplinary Competencies along with STEM education badges as part of your clinical coursework.

The MEd in Secondary Education is a full-time program. Classes are held weekdays on late afternoons and evenings at Loyola's Lakeshore Campus for some courses, and Loyola's Water Tower Campus for others, while some of the courses are also offered online.

Initial Science PEL: Can earn additional subsequent Science endorsements with either 12 hours of acceptable coursework OR passed content test

This content area is for applicants interested in becoming social studies teachers. Candidates must have 32 total credit hours at grade C- or above in the social sciences. The social sciences are defined as courses taken in departments of:

All secondary candidates must complete the program with a licensure endorsement in history education, even if psychology or political science are the initial endorsement field. To do this, candidates must have at least 12 credit hours in history by the time of certification or have passed the Illinois Licensure Test #246 “Social Science: History” prior to admission.

Statement of Purpose Details

Your statement should be 2-3 pages (double spaced) and describe your academic and professional experience, plans and goals for this program and upon completion of graduate coursework, and your perspective on social justice as it applies to being a high school teacher. Please clearly indicate your content area of choice (Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Physics, or Social Studies). You should also include why you are a good fit for Loyola University Chicago's teacher education program.

Curriculum Design

As mentioned above, curriculum design outlines what kids learn and when. The MEd with a concentration in curriculum design is more of a background position but still essential for schools to function. 

This specialization can also open doors to becoming a school principal, vice-principal, or curriculum director. Courses in curriculum design typically include psychology classes (such as developmental psychology) and classroom management.

Overall, the goal of a curriculum design degree is to help students apply what they learn in the classroom to their future careers. You will also have to conduct research and most likely complete a thesis.

Special Education

One of the only sects on this list that involves teaching directly, the special education concentration MEd is not for everyone – but for those that decide to pursue it,  it often changes students’ and teachers’ lives in the same way.

The special education Master’s program at some universities may only accept applicants with a teaching degree or a special education Bachelor’s. Concentrations within the special education MEd certification include but are not limited to:

The instructional coordinator job is ideal for those with a concentration in curriculum design. Some of the job duties of an instructional coordinator include:

Wonderful experience

This university conducts seminars, alumni meetings, debate competitions, and many more competitions at the national level. Cultural festivals are also organized like the Holi celebration, Pongal, Ugadi, etc. There are a lot of books and journals in the library, we can access them easily. Smart classrooms are available in respective departments. There are so many clubs like dance club, science club, maths club, etc And main beauty of the campus are very green and freedom of entry and exit anytime. Healthcare facilities are provided 24hrs There is ample opportunity for sports like cricket, badminton, basketball, volleyball, football, etc. Yes, there are some social groups like ABVB, PUSDC, and many more.

Tuition fees for a year program are approx 35000 and hostel fees 1000rs yearly and mess fees 12000 per semester. The complete cost of education is around 90000 including mess facilities. Here scholarship is available for the first three best performances in the class. Campus placement also gives the opportunity.

A Story about my college days

Spandan, tech smart, and Sportica are the annual fest of the college that held annually. There are 15000+ books available in the library. auditorium and lecture hall complex are available there. 400-meter race, long jump, high jump, cricket tournament, handball and many more sports activity yes some students sun social groups along with their studies.

I love to read English that is the reason I chose this course.i have prepared for this from my own notes and the YouTube channel is also useful for us. The course should not more lengthy so that we can cover and understand it easily in the selected time period..The frequency and timing of exams in my perspective are easy to moderate.

PROFESSIONAL COURSE IN HNBGU

The curriculum is not that much modified. It is based on old education policy which is very wrong to teach education students old policy knowledge. There is lack of smart claases and the ICT is just taught in books only . No medium of technology is updated. Faculty is good but they didn't take classes because of documentation and paper work load.

The fee structure is very minimal in comparison with other central universities. State scholarships are open for students. No financial assistance is given to students and there is very very less amount of campus placement in professional courses.

The capus is quite big but there are some restriction in the college. There is annual fest held every year. There are libraries where you find the books and sports are also conducted by college. there are few groups in M.Edu but overall all groups are run by students.

The fees structure is not much high. The fees for M.Edu is about 45k for a year. There are scholarships also provided by govt. Which can be get by the help of college. My aim is not get campus placement.

My College Days Experience at MANUI

In the year 2021, I completed My B.ED from the same University and My Aim was already decided to become an assistant professor of Education I have to do a Master of Education that's why I did. In my college, I think it is 150 to 13 because in the college there is 2 Unit B.Ed. & 1 Unit M.Ed. seats are allowed by NCTE norms, and In the College, there are 2 Professors 2 Associate Professors & 22 Assistant Professors. Term Exam is definitely on time as Calendar of Every Year Program wise is issued by University and it is followed by the college accordingly. If You study Properly and attend class regularly you can pass the term exam easily because here exams are malpractice free don't dare to cheat in the exams because rules are strict here.

The University is absolutely attractive and the hostel facility, literary club gym, and Extracurricular activities programs were subsequently conducted in the university headquarters. It is enjoyable. Libraries are there, have Big Hall for study with an AC facility and many more expensive ones and the book you have for your courses are available in the library. Extracurricular Activities are Conducted by the Union Leader. Required facilities for the course are available in the classroom like a smart board projector and more. ANUGOONJ is the annual college fest which is organized every year in the month of February. The campus holds various activities every month. There is a library on the campus that is accessible to students with a wide variety of books. The classrooms are good in condition with the presence of working CCTV, projector, and AC. I want to become teacher educator. Hence, I chose M.Ed for my post-graduation. The faculty: student ratio is 50:6. The teachers are well qualified holding Phd degrees. The classes are very interactive. Both Lecture method and ICT tools are used to conduct leactures. There are 4 minors and 4 semester exams along with Dissertation. The exams are of good level checking the understanding and application of the students.

The annual fest of DAVV is one in which all the departments participate. The books in the library are accessible as much as uh can read. The classroom amenities are perfect. Not that many sports facilities. We give all our time to the dissertation.

This course consists of Theory Examinations, Dissertions, Field Based Assignments/ Projects, Seminars and Internal Assessment tests which help students Improve their Knowledge.I Choose this course because I wanted to teach in Colleges. Every Student must do the Dissertion Work Individually under the supervision of a lecturer and score 50% marks. There are many subjects in this course like Philosophy of Education, Pychology of learning and Development etc. The Faculty of AMS college is highly Experienced and have good communication skills.

The fees for M.Ed in AMS college of Education is approximately Rs 30000/- per year and there are some other fees you need to pay before Semester Exams like Exam fee and Project fee etc. The cost to study in this college is very less compared to other M.Ed colleges. Also there is an opportunity for students belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe as well as Minority students for scholarship. You need to have Original Caste certifiate and Income Certificate for verification otherwide scholarship is not sanctioned.

Best Course for Professional Educator.

I selected this course because it is in the teaching field, which I enjoyed a lot. The faculty was amazing and helpful and the ratio was 1:45, although they divides students among 2 or 4 groups according to the requirement. Faculty was qualified from reputed colleges and some were Doctorate in their field. It is an annual mode course where you only have exams once a year as there is a lot of fieldwork and fun visits and trips planned.

Life at the campus was amazing as B.El.Ed students stay From 8:30 AM TO 5:00 PM, and annual fees, sports day and Mata Sundari Day use to celebrate. The library was fully Air Conditioned and had access to all material required. For more materials and books B.El.Ed scholar can reach to DOE library.

School principal

A school principal is the chief executive officer of a school. They oversee the school staff, monitor education objectives and curricular standards, ensure assessment is administered regularly and effectively, approve extracurricular activities, manage the budget, arrange professional development for staff, and oversee daily operations. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that school principals typically earn $98,490 annually. 

School psychologist

School psychologists work with students who have acute mental health, emotional, and behavioral issues. They typically work within a school or school district (larger schools may have their own school psychologist; smaller ones may share a psychologist with neighboring schools). Additionally, school psychologists develop policies to promote mental and emotional health and assist in supporting students with learning differences. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , school psychologists typically earn about $77,500 annually.

School superintendent

School superintendents oversee school districts, ensuring that each school in the district operates efficiently and effectively. They set and communicate policy, oversee curriculum implementation, manage instruction and assessment, supervise human resource management, and provide leadership for all schools in the district. Additionally, superintendents represent their districts at the county and state level, advocating for them when policy is formulated and budgets are determined. According to the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), school superintendents can earn a median salary between $140,172 and $180,500 per year, depending on the size of their district.

Training and development specialist

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , training and development specialists “plan and administer programs that improve the skills and knowledge of employees,” making this an excellent job for someone with an education background. Training and development specialists work in nearly every industry and field, “working with people, giving presentations, and leading training activities.” The BLS reports that these professionals earn an average annual income of $62,700.

Vice principal

A vice principal is second-in-command at a school, serving directly below the principal. A vice principal’s duties can vary depending on which tasks the principal wishes to delegate, but typically vice principals are actively involved in the day-to-day running of the school. If the principal is the school’s chief executive officer, the vice principal is its chief operating officer, enforcing rules, monitoring schedules and calendars, handling student discipline, supervising operations, and liaising between faculty and administration. According to Salary.com , vice principals earn an average annual salary of $90,381.

MAT vs. MEd: What do you learn?

Whether you earn a master of arts in teaching (MAT) or a master of education (MEd), you will likely complete a curriculum of approximately 30 credit hours. If you do not have a bachelor’s degree in education, you may be required to complete additional foundation courses.

In either master’s degree program, you’ll likely complete core course work in education theory, research, education technology, classroom management, curriculum development, and assessment and measurement. The focus of these classes may differ slightly – the teaching master’s will likely emphasize in-class applications while the education master’s will take a more academic approach – but the subject matter should be similar.

Most programs offer the opportunity to specialize in a specific subject or skill area. You will complete your graduate degree specialization by taking several elective courses in your discipline of choice and, in some programs, completing a thesis, capstone research project, or field placement/internship.

MAT vs. MED specializations

Specialization options in master’s teaching degree and education degree programs include the following.

Master of arts in teaching (MAT) specializations

Early childhood education.

A focus on early childhood education prepares teachers to instruct at the birth through grade 2 level. You’ll learn to recognize the different stages of childhood development and what interventions are appropriate for students demonstrating developmental issues.

Elementary education

An elementary education specialization provides the theory, pedagogy, and practice required to teach at the kindergarten through grade 6 level.

English as a second language (ESL)/teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL)

ESL and TESOL specializations prepare teachers to work with students whose native language is not English. Different programs use different distinctions, but ESL and TESOL are interchangeable terms. A third distinction, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), is used for teachers who plan to teach English overseas. Some programs offer ESL and TESOL as a certificate but not as a specialization track.

Language arts education

Learn to teach students to speak, read, write, and understand written and spoken English. English language arts (ELA) teachers teach grammar, spelling, phonics, reading comprehension, speaking, literature, and research skills. A language arts teaching master’s typically focuses on grades 7 through 12 content, the grades at which teachers specialize in a single subject.

Mathematics education

Mathematics encompasses everything from basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) to geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. An MAT in mathematics education typically focuses on grades 7 through 12 content.

Middle grades education

Middle school is a period of intense social and physical development. Middle school teachers require training in the pedagogy, psychology, and physiology of students in this age group. A specialization in middle grades education prepares teachers to lead grades 6 through 8 classes.

Science education

Science at the secondary level encompasses chemistry, physics, life sciences, and earth sciences. An MAT prepares you to teach science at the middle and high school levels.

Secondary education

A master of arts in Teaching with a specialization in secondary education prepares teachers to teach at the grades 7 through 12 levels. Not all schools use this distinction, and most that do require enrollees to specialize further in a single subject, such as language arts, mathematics, or science.

Social studies education

Social studies covers a substantial range of subjects, including ancient history, US history, world history, geography, world cultures, civics, economics, and sociology. An MAT in social studies education prepares teachers to lead grades 7 through 12 classrooms in these subjects.

Special education instruction

Special education training prepares teachers to work with students demonstrating autism spectrum disorders, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, physical impairment, or learning disabilities. Course work focuses on diagnosis, pedagogy, possible interventions, education technology, classroom management, and diversity.

Master of education (MEd) specializations

Applied human development.

Applied human development concentrations focus on the physical, psychological, and emotional development patterns young people experience. This specialization typically leads to careers in academic research, youth program management, or work with NGOs and foundations.

Curriculum design

Curriculum design is how curricula are mapped against various learning standards and compiled into yearlong sequences of objectives and corresponding lessons. A curriculum design specialization typically leads to careers in federal, state, and district-level administration, textbook publishing, or research.

Curriculum and instruction

Curriculum and instruction is a broader specialization than curriculum design. Its scope includes instructional methods, education technology, cross-disciplinary learning, and fostering collaborative classrooms. A curriculum and instruction specialization may lead to a career in front of a classroom or in school administration. 

Education administration

Running a school requires expert management skills and knowledge. An MEd in education administration prepares you for the challenges of keeping a school operational and effective. Those who pursue this specialization typically aspire to be superintendents, principals, vice principals, or administrative specialists.

Educational leadership

As its name indicates, an educational leadership specialization focuses on leadership skills within education. It’s an appropriate degree for aspiring lead teachers, department heads, school administrators, and policy experts.

Educational psychology

Educational psychology focuses on child and adolescent development, cognition, and motivation in education. Careers include non-clinical roles in education, training, and research.

Educational technology

Computing permeates nearly all aspects of modern life, including education. As more and more learning activities migrate to apps and devices, the need for educational technology experts grows ever greater. Learn education web design, e-book publishing, app management, virtual reality learning, assistive technology, and social media. Careers include instructional designer, trainer, and technology coach.

Experiential learning for early childhood

Experiential learning for early childhood explores learning theory and pedagogical design for young learners. Careers include curriculum developer, policy advocate, and program director.

Higher education administration

College and university administration presents a unique set of challenges. An MEd in higher education administration trains you for a career in the front offices of a higher education institution. You’ll learn to anticipate developing problems, design and implement student support programs, and maintain the smooth operation of a large and complex institution. 

Instructional design and technology

Apply learning theory to the creation and implementation of learning materials, with a particular focus on technology-driven education. You’ll study learning theory and how to apply it to develop interactive tools that promote learning. This degree can lead to careers in public and private school systems, curriculum development and instructional design firms, and corporate training.

Global and comparative education

Teaching techniques and learning theories vary around the world. Global and comparative education specialists study these different approaches to determine whether they are effective and can be applied or adapted in American classrooms. This degree typically leads to careers in policy and academics.

Measurement and evaluation

Academic testing is a massive industry in the United States and around the world. MEd in measurement and evaluation specialists learn the science behind accurate and effective testing as well as the essential validation processes employed to ensure test validity. Graduates typically pursue careers in school administration, research, testing organizations and companies, or private business (companies also like to test their employees’ aptitude and skills).

School counseling

School counselors work one-on-one with students to promote personal, academic, and career development. Counselors assist students in managing institutional obstacles, coping with trauma and other challenges, and plotting their academic trajectory and college choices. Most counselors work within school systems, although some operate independently.

Master’s in teaching: curriculum 

The MAT degree is a graduate-level teaching credential focused on both theory and practical skills required to lead a classroom. MAT programs typically cover learning theory, curriculum design and development, classroom management, assessment and measurement methodology, and cultural and societal factors impacting student performance and achievement. Prospective teachers in these advanced degree programs typically specialize. If they seek to teach at the middle or high school level, they often specialize in the subject they plan to teach.

Residents in the NYU Teacher Residency program earn an online master of arts in teaching while completing a teaching residency, which is a form of apprenticeship. The program is designed for teacher candidates who aspire to develop a practice that is culturally responsive and equitable. It allows them to accrue the requisite classroom experience and training necessary to lead a classroom upon completion of their degree (which takes a little over one year).

The academic portion of the NYU Teacher Residency consists of 10 to 12 modules, commencing in the summer preceding your apprenticeship and concluding at the end of the following summer. The Secondary MAT is a 10-module, 30-credit master of arts in teaching (Grades 7-12) and the new Inclusive Childhood MAT is a 12-module, 35-credit master of arts in teaching (dual degree in Childhood Education and Childhood Special Education, Grades 1-6). Early modules focus on understanding the roles and identities of teachers and students and how they impact classroom dynamics. Prospective teachers also learn the importance of engaging parents and community in education, how to recognize their own blind spots concerning diversity and inclusion issues, and the importance of creating an environment of mutual respect.

Residents then concentrate on promoting student success and managing the classroom to optimize participation and learning. For the master of arts in teaching in Secondary Education, residents begin work in their content area, developing unique approaches and techniques to teach their chosen subject or skill area (e.g., special education). They also study curriculum planning and development, including methods for tailoring instruction to students’ individual needs and integrating their subject with content taught elsewhere in the curriculum. They learn to utilize tests, assignments, projects, and other assessments to measure progress and identify areas requiring further instruction and practice.

Later modules focus on teaching reading and writing in the context of other subjects, special education and disability education, low-incidence disabilities, and the professional and social responsibilities of teaching. Master’s students also engage in a participatory action research (PAR) project, a “collaborative process of inquiry and action for change in response to organizational or community problems.”

While earning their master’s degrees in the evening, residents complete a teaching residency under the supervision of an experienced teacher. Working alongside a mentor for a full school year, residents accumulate the experience and knowledge they’ll need to ultimately lead a classroom of their own. Full-time residents receive a stipend and tuition support in return for their work. 

Master’s in education: curriculum 

A master of education (sometimes called a master of science in education or a master of arts in education) covers a broader range of practices than a master of arts in teaching. The latter concentrates almost exclusively on classroom leadership. The master’s of education, in contrast, can explore everything from curriculum development to policy leadership roles to educational administration. Accordingly, curricula for MEd programs vary significantly, not only from school to school but also from one specialization to another. To get some idea of what you’ll study in an MEd curriculum, review the MEd specializations listed earlier in this article.

In a profession in which only 20 percent of teachers are people of color, the NYU teacher residency has enrolled at least 60 percent of teachers of color each year. Your students will include emergent bilinguals and students with learning and physical disabilities, providing you with experience in teaching students of all backgrounds and abilities.

Master of Education in Teaching and Learning (Online)

This 36-hour secondary education program is designed primarily for experienced teachers who wish to:

  • Further their education and improve their teaching practice.
  • Qualify for leadership positions within their schools or districts (i.e., curriculum/instructional specialists).
  • Teach dual credit courses at the high school level.
  • Teach at a community college.

This degree consists of 18 hours of online core courses, including a 3 hour capstone course, some courses may include regular virtual class meetings. The core courses along with an individualized capstone project will enhance student knowledge and skills to better serve the needs of the diverse student population in Texas within educational settings. The student will also take 6 hours of electives from inside or outside the Perkins College of Education. This degree has four different concentration options including:

  • ESL/Bilingual Education (12 hours, online)
  • Gifted and Talented Education (12 hours, online)
  • Online Teaching (12 hours, online)
  • Content Area (18 hours, face to face, online and/or hybrid depending on content area)

The purpose of the Office of Continuing Medical Education is to certify lifelong learning activities for physicians in order to improve the practice of medicine, addressing gaps in quality and patient safety and their outcomes. This includes patient care, research, medical education and administration.

Activities include a range of clinical, research, medical teaching and leadership skills which are based on identified needs of practitioners. This includes all segments of contemporary primary and specialty practice. Michigan State University is a world-class institution of higher learning. The target audience of the Office of Continuing Medical Education includes the broad community of health care professionals including primary and specialty physicians locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Accreditation

The expected results of the CME program are to provide activities that:

  • Incorporate the educational needs that underlie the professional practice gaps of our learners, and which match the current or potential scope of professional activities independent of commercial interests
  • Improve patient outcomes through early adoption of new standards and enhanced clinical skills
  • Foster the continuing educational development of physicians and health professionals to enhance their competence and performance
  • Improve the quality of the educational process through consultation and documented compliance with accreditation standards/criteria

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Continuing Medical Education Office is focused on meeting the continuing education needs of the health care providers in our state and the nation, and supporting our partners in their efforts to offer world-class continuing medical education (CME) opportunities. The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) accredits MSU College of Human Medicine.

MSU College of Human Medicine has been resurveyed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and awarded full accreditation for 4 years as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians. ACCME accreditation seeks to assure the medical community and the public that the college provides physicians with relevant, effective, practice-based continuing medical education that that supports US health care quality improvement. The ACCME employs a rigorous, multilevel process for evaluating institutions' continuing medical education programs according to the high accreditation standards adopted by all seven ACCME member organizations. These organizations of medicine in the US are the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, the Association for Hospital Medical Education, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and the Federation of State Medical Boards of the US, Inc.

Central Oregon’s first graduate medical education program launches; meet the first 3 residents in training

The first three participants in Central Oregon’s only graduate medical education program, the Three Sisters Rural Track Program, began training in family medicine this month. They will have hands-on learning at OHSU in Portland for the program’s first year, and will complete their final two years of training at St. Charles Madras. 'I want to give back to the community that raised me'

PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Three newly minted physicians are the first trainees of the Three Sisters Rural Track Program , or RTP, a three-year family medicine residency program that is Central Oregon’s first graduate medical education program .

Oregon Health & Science University and St. Charles Health System jointly established Three Sisters RTP to help grow Central Oregon’s health care workforce and meet the unique health needs of rural Oregonians. Organizers hope many of the new program’s participants will continue to live and work in Central Oregon after they complete their residency.

The trio of residents began their advanced medical training at OHSU this month. Next summer, the residents will head to St. Charles Madras — a 25-bed critical access hospital located about 50 miles north of Bend — for two more years of training.

“We are excited to welcome the first residents of the Three Sisters Rural Track Program, and eager to help them provide thoughtful, comprehensive health care for the people of Central Oregon,” said Three Sisters Rural Track Program Director Jinnell Lewis, M.D., who is also a family medicine physician with St. Charles. “Once at St. Charles, the residents will immediately help fill a need in the region, providing care for an estimated 900 patients a year.”

The program creates a pathway for specially trained physicians to dramatically improve health care access in Central Oregon, where many towns have a shortage of providers. Research has shown that about 55% of physicians stay within a 100-mile radius of their residency site . This means, within 10 years, Three Sisters RTP is estimated to produce 23 physicians who would reside in Central Oregon and provide care for 20,000 to 40,000 patients in the region.

“It’s hard to overstate the powerful positive impact this program can have,” Lewis said.

Lewis moved to Central Oregon about a decade ago, after she completed another OHSU residency program that is focused on rural health: the Cascades East Family Medicine Residency in Klamath Falls. Three Sisters RTP is partly modeled after Cascades East’s more than three decades of success.

Residency programs provide additional training for physicians who recently completed medical school. Three Sisters RTP focuses on family medicine , a primary care medical specialty that involves caring for the whole family, ranging from children to pregnant people to seniors. Family medicine physicians offer broad care, and help patients both manage existing health conditions and prevent others. In rural areas where there are fewer physicians, primary care providers play a particularly important role in keeping their communities healthy. In addition to primary care, Three Sisters RTP residents will also train in family birthing, emergency medicine, behavioral health and hospital medicine.

One of the new Three Sisters RTP residents, Callie Krewson, D.O[SH1] ., was born at St. Charles Bend and graduated from Bend’s Mountain View High School in 2008. Krewson said she is excited to be part of the program’s inaugural class and would like to stay in Central Oregon after her residency.

“I look forward to returning to the places that I know and love,” Krewson said. “I want to give back to the community that raised me.”

During the residents’ first year in Portland, they will work and learn at OHSU hospitals and various outpatient clinics, as well as at the VA Portland Health Care System. And when the residents move to Madras for the final two years of their training, they will care for patients at the St. Charles Family Care Clinic in Madras and Mosaic Community Health’s Madras Health Center. They will also have learning opportunities at the Indian Health Services’ Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center.

OHSU is the host institution for Three Sisters RTP, and St. Charles is its primary training site. The program’s launch was made possible by a $750,000 grant from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources & Service Administration, and a $250,000 Healthy Oregon Workforce Training Opportunity grant. Donations to St. Charles Foundation will support ongoing training and recruitment efforts, technology upgrades and additional needs as the residency program grows.

The program’s launch is part of larger efforts to expand residency programs statewide. OHSU recently achieved the milestone of having more than 100 accredited residency and fellowship programs .

Five faculty members with a variety of clinical and research experience — representing four departments — have joined the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences during the past few months.

Tatsuaki Kurosaki, PhD , is an assistant professor of biotechnical and clinical laboratory sciences .

The primary research goal of his laboratory is to investigate RNA regulatory mechanisms that govern cell proliferation and cell death and to understand how RNA misregulation contributes to various incurable human diseases.

The ultimate goal is to develop RNA-based methodologies to correct aberrant RNA processing, providing effective and targeted therapeutic strategies for these conditions.

Kurosaki earned a doctoral degree in biology (molecular biology and genomics) from the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Science.

Hamza Hassan, MD , is an assistant professor of medicine .

He is a hematologist with a research focus on novel translational clinical trials focused on plasma cell dyscrasias.

His current work involves understanding the biology of high-risk myeloma and amyloidosis and designing novel clinical trials to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Srinivasan Mani, MD , is a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics , who specializes in neonatology.

Mani completed a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the Jacobs School and a residency in pediatrics at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. 

He earned his medical degree from Madurai Medical College and Hospital in India.

The promise of weight-loss drugs.

Where these drugs might take us — and what that means for medicine.

I’ve covered Ozempic and similar drugs since 2022.

In the past two years, Ozempic has become a synonym for weight loss. When celebrities slimmed down, tabloids wondered whether they were taking the drug. Activists argued that the drug entrenched old norms about body image — people still seemed to want to be thin. Ozempic was weight loss; weight loss was Ozempic. It’s like Kleenex or Scotch tape: totemic.

Technically, while Ozempic is a diabetes drug, people can, and do, take it to drop weight.

But the drug — and others in its class, such as Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound — is about much more. Scientists believe the drugs are about to revolutionize several fields of medicine, such as cardiology and endocrinology. Researchers are also running dozens of trials to see whether they might help with Alzheimer’s, liver disease, polycystic ovary syndrome and even skin conditions. If these trials prove successful, the drugs may extend many lives by years, save billions in medical costs and divide public health into before-and-after epochs. A researcher studying these drugs told me he felt like the scientist who first discovered antibiotics.

Those are some sky-high hopes, and not all will be come true. But we’ve already seen a real-world impact. In March, the Food and Drug Administration said that doctors could use Wegovy to reduce the risk of heart problems . Last month, a trial showed that the compound in Ozempic reduced the risk of complications from chronic kidney disease. And last week, two trials found that tirzepatide, the substance in Mounjaro and Zepbound, could improve symptoms of sleep apnea.

The idea that a single drug that could target so many kinds of disease might sound too good to be true. These drugs, called GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists), mystify even the scientists who study them. When I asked researchers how it was possible that Ozempic might help with cognitive issues and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and opioid addiction, they gave the same answer: We don’t know!

But we have early clues about where these drugs might take us — and what that means for medicine. In today’s newsletter, I’ll explain.
