Suvarna Pasare cooks the food for the dogs at their home. They have 5 dogs in total. All were strays earlier. All of them were rescued from the streets by Arun.

I am an animal lover by heart. But I have not been so helpful to them until I met Arun Pasare. His way of life helped me to see all the wonderful animals in a different way. The variety of jobs dogs perform has led humans to try to develop distinct dog breeds for each occupation, which led to the emergence of numerous and different varieties of the same animal.

The Greatest Dog Essay Ever

  … would first pay homage to Brian Doyle, knowing that it could never reach the dizzying heights of his “Greatest Nature Essay Ever,” before offering some doggie tidbit, like maybe the fact that dogs smell in stereo, or that sometimes when they roll on the ground in what seems to be joy they’re “really” discharging the static electricity built up in their electrophilic fur. Or maybe it would begin at the purblind beginning, with dogs’ very uncertain origins. They may have evolved from proto-wolves not one but twice, or possibly even three times, maybe in northern Asia or maybe the Middle East or perhaps even Europe. All we know for certain—or think we do—is that dogs evolved alongside humans, intertwined with human interests from their beginnings, leading to this bizarre concoction of natural selection and human engineering.

The greatest dog essay ever might be structured around the dog’s five senses, offering a paragraph on each, putting the reader in the dog’s-eye, dog’s-ear, dog’s-nose view. It would ask: What’s it like to smell in stereo? Should we think about hearing in stereo, and then imagine our ears as nostrils? What’s it like to see in fewer colors but alert to every minute movement? To hear all those sounds out there that the world makes without our knowing, so we call them “ultrasonic”? Imagine feeling a passing car’s rumbles in your paws.

Or the greatest dog essay ever might be structured around different dog breeds and their histories: the cocker spaniel, flushing woodcocks from the underbrush, his flapping ears brushing up scents; the border collie, harnessing the predation of her lupine ancestry into her stalk and stare; the dachshund, whose oversized web paws still dig for genetically remembered burrowed badgers; the husky, whose 20-inch neck yearns to pull weight, be it sleds or sleighs or middle-aged humans on the wrong end of the leash. Every feature of a dog’s body has a history. And then there’s the mutt: the cocker spaniel head on the border collie body, or the husky-terrier that Disney might cast as a cartoon wolf.

The greatest dog essay ever might mention important dogs in history and culture: not just Rin Tin Tin and Lassie (which of course it would mention in passing), but also, maybe, the White House dogs, from Bo Obama to Miss Beazley Bush to Buddy Clinton to the Him and Her beagles of LBJ to FDR’s Scottie, Fala, and all the way back to George Washington’s American foxhounds. Or perhaps it would stretch all the way back to the legendary Argos, who waited 20 years for Odysseus before dying of happiness on his master’s return. It might dip into dog mythology and question the association of dogs with death in many cultures: Cerberus, that three-headed hound of Hades in Greek antiquity; Xoloti, the monstrous dog of the Aztec Underworld; the messenger dogs of Yama, God of Death in Hindu mythology; Anubis, the ancient Egyptian jackal-god and guide into the Afterlife; and the Black Dog of the British Isles, portent of death. Dogs at that liminal space between human civilization, such as it is, and the natural world to which we all return. Dogs who show us the way to a world beyond our knowing.

The greatest dog essay ever wouldn’t shy away from the darker facts. The dogs gone wrong. Mange. Rabies. Dogs bred to kill other dogs, or to kill humans. The perfect little angels who one day suddenly maul a baby. The greatest dog essay might mention the cultures that eat dogs, and then gently redirect that disgust to wonder why it’s okay to eat other animals, mammals even. The essay would acknowledge the millions of strays, and the millions of euthanized dogs every year, and the puppy mills with their permanently caged puppy-making bitches, whose only crime is being female and fertile. The greatest dog essay, though, would consider more than condemn, recognizing that we all struggle in this dog-eat-dog world.

We struggle, but dogs make it a little bit better, and just when you start to feel overwhelmed with dog sadness, the greatest dog essay would remind you of the joy of rescue dogs, who come to you broken, miserable things and then quickly adapt to happiness. It would transition from darker side, not in denial but with the resolute resilience of a dog rebounding from a scolding by plopping a ball in his human’s lap, every muscle tensed for the throw, making waiting the most active verb ever, and you know that however much you love your own dogs, however much they’re the perfect culmination of canine evolution, are in fact the best dogs ever in the whole entire world, you would never clone them, like some celebrities might, knowing that there are even more dogs out there with more ways of being dog that you haven’t experienced yet, more than you could experience in a lifetime.

Perhaps this essay, having started with the nose, would end with the tail. Soft, swooshy, feather-duster tails and coffee-table clearing tails and thick, muscular tails that leave welts and sideways-curling tails and brush tails and up-and-over scorpion tails. Tails that tell emotions: stiffening to rigid alertness, flattening subordinately to cover escaping odors, whooshing warningly, or happily splashing their scents to all who know how to smell their greeting. Let other people doubt that dogs experience what humans know as emotions: the tail says otherwise. As does the acquisitive nose, twitching questioningly before the big sniff. The nose seeks the tail, or under-tail, of another, leading to the nose-to-tail circle-dance, that dog-to-dog handshake.

The greatest dog essay ever might itself do the nose-tail circle dance, reminding the reader that, seriously, dogs smell in stereo. Just imagine. The reader would return to her own dog—her ordinary, everyday, endlessly shedding, ever-pooping, tail-wagging, tail-drooping, tail-wagging dog. Perhaps he’s drowsing on the couch next to her and, sensing something different in his human’s fingers, raises his nose, thumps a tail once, twice, only half aware that his human will never again see him in quite the same way, that she’s feeling something beyond his emotional register, some bizarre hybrid of grateful and amazed, a feeling that, to be accurately expressed, would require something more physical than words. It might require a tail.

Mi Perro: Prisoners and their dogs in Latin America – a photo essay

A project looking at how prisoners in a violent, painful and precarious environment develop deep affective bonds with another species

V enezuela, a country with an economic, political and social crisis going back more than 20 years, is not known for being avant-garde in penitentiary issues. Although the internal relationships formed between convicts and dogs are nothing new when compared with programmes in other countries, what is innovative is that no one asked the prisoners there to take care of a dog, when taking care of an inmate in a Venezuelan prison can be an “extreme sport”.

Prisons in Latin America are a violent environment and living conditions are often precarious. That is not the theme of this essay. Such an adverse situation perhaps should not allow for the rescue of and nurturing of another living being. This is manifested in a natural way, as if among so much struggle the soul also seeks its food.

By exploring the relationship between prisoners and dogs, Mi Perro offers a broader and more nuanced look at prison life. It shows how bonds and the need for connection overcome the barriers imposed by incarceration. This not only provides a deeper understanding of the human experience in extreme situations, but also challenges the notion of prison as a place of exclusion and absolute punishment.

Through regular field research and photographic material, the project shows how we can build relationships from a different perspective with people who do not necessarily conform to social norms. In this case, the dog acts as a mediator, allowing us to align or put ourselves on the same level.

The project explores the fine line between good and bad in the same person, what really makes us, and what could happen if we had the opportunity and the right choices, because in the end we are all human.

If the dog, as a companion, has food and care, what does it offer to the prisoner, who cares for him? This question in a context, far from family, from people and things that evoke the prisoner’s home, brings us closer to see our own similarities and shortcomings, reflected in a four-legged being that accepts us, makes us feel useful. It also gives us love, and aren’t all these things that remind us of home? If so, then this research seeks to reflect a feeling of belonging that the dog gives back in that relationship.

One can find dogs everywhere in the world. Dogs are a very faithful animal. It has a sharp mind and a strong sense of hearing smelling the things. It also has many qualities like swimming in the water, jumping from anywhere, good smelling sense.

Importance of Dog

A dog has a strong power of smell . They are more liked by people because of their faithfulness. They are intelligent, they are watchfulness. The dogs have many colors such as grey, white, black, brown and red. They are of many kinds such as bloodhound, greyhound, german shepherd, Labrador, Rottweiler, bulldog poodle, etc.

Usually, the dog eats fish, meat, milk, rice, bread, etc. Dogs are sometimes called canines. Dogs are sometimes referred to as man’s best friend because they are kept as domestic pets and are usually loyal and like being around humans. They are also helpful in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness and even improve your cardiovascular health. A dog also provides valuable companionship for older adults.

The 2024 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest kicked off at the corner of Surf and Stillwell in Coney Island, New York. While the tournament is all the same, a major player – and an American icon – wasn't present.

This year, Joey Chestnut wasn't be part of the contest due to a contractual dispute with Major League Eating, leaving him on the sidelines and away from an opportunity at a 17th Mustard Belt. That opened the door (and the esophagus) for Patrick Bertoletti, who won in Chestnut's absence.

On the women's side, it was Miki Sudo and the field: Sudo is now a 10-time winner of the Ketchup Belt and has finished at the top of the heap in every contest she's performed in.

Who is Nathan’s new champion?

Patrick "Deep Dish" Bertoletti, 39, hails from Chicago. He is not the second coming of Joey Chestnut, but he’s been an accomplished competitor on the Major League Eating (MLE) circuit for more than a decade.

He holds 32 world records, including 47 pieces of Big Apple pizza in 10 minutes, 29 waffles in 10 minutes, and five pounds of sour pickles in six minutes, according to his bio on the MLE website.

But the Mustard Belt had eluded him. Until Thursday, when he scarfed down 58 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.

"I just can’t believe it," he said on ESPN's telecast, noting he always finishes second or third when he competes at Nathan’s. "I lost some weight. Just lots of work. There’s an urgency.

"With Joey not here, I knew I had a shot. I was able to unlock something that I don’t know where it came from."

Bertoletti prevails with 58 dogs!

Patrick Bertoletti, 39, of Illinois won the Mustard Belt by eating 58 hot dogs and buns in a back-and-forth 10-minute battle among a handful of eaters. It was the first time someone other than Joey Chestnut has won the contest since 2015, when Chestnut lost to Matt Stonie.

Bertoletti rallied from an early deficit and broke his personal record of 55 hot dogs.

"I wasn’t going to stop eating until the job was done," he said moments after the competition.

Geoffrey Esper of Massachusetts finished second with 53 hot dogs.

The X account for Major League Eating (MLE), which essentially banned Chestnut from competing at Nathan’s this year, has become a gathering place for Chestnut (mostly) supporters. Popular hashtags: #FreeJoey and #LetJoeyEat.  

MLE’s official announcement about Chestnut’s status June 11 triggered 296 comments, including: 

“The 30 for 30 about the downfall of the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest is gonna be lit." 

"This is like Caitlin left off the USA team. I mean who is in charge over there. Watch the viewer drop 50%."

"Strip his old victories and records away from him, too."

So said ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap in narrating a tribute to Chestnut with footage of his triumphs and rare setbacks (the loss to Matt Stonie in 2015).

“This year the greatest eater of our time has put down the dogs and buns," Schaap said. "At least the Nathan’s dogs and buns."

"I’ll probably look for something cold and refreshing," she told ESPN’s Tiffany Greene about an hour after her triumphant victory. "Maybe some fruit or soft serve."

Why isn’t Joey Chestnut competing in the Hot Dog Eating Contest? 

Chestnut will not be competing in the 2024 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest due to a contractual dispute with Major League Eating, the organization that sanctions the event. 

In June, Chestnut signed an endorsement deal with Impossible Foods to sponsor a new, meatless hot dog. Representing a rival brand is something that gave MLE and Nathan's Famous more than a bit of indigestion, leading to him not being at the event this year . 

The ban, though, isn't permanent, according to MLE, which wants Chestnut to compete at future events. 

"Joey Chestnut is an American hero. We would love nothing more than to have him at the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, which he has dominated for years. We hope that he returns when he is not representing a rival brand," MLE said in a statement.

Joey Chestnut a fan of Geoff Esper 

Joey Chestnut is out of the competition, but not out of the loop. In an interview with USA TODAY Sports, he offered thoughts on who might win the men’s contest this year. 

"There’s Geoff Esper," Chestnut said. "He’s an amazing eater and he just hasn’t been able to have a good contest on the Fourth of July. But he’s capable of 57. James Webb, he’s new and he’s getting better. So I can see his technique and eventually I think he’ll be in the 60s. He’s just getting started. Pat Bertoletti, I think he did 55 years ago (actually 49) and he started training a lot harder once he realize there was a chance (Chestnut would not complete).

In 2021, Joey Chestnut set the world record for hot dogs and buns eaten with 76. Chestnut set the world record twice in the prior three contests: In 2018, he shattered the world record, devouring 74 hot dogs and buns, and in 2020, he again set the standard, eating 75 hot dogs and buns. 

On the women's side, Miki Sudo is the top dog (eater), munching 48 ½ hot dogs and buns in 2020. 

How many times has Joey Chestnut won the Hot Dog Eating Contest? 

Chestnut holds the record for most Mustard Belts, winning the contest 16 times. On the women's side, Miki Sudo has been an unstoppable eating force, winning nine of the last 10 Ketchup Belts. 

Joey Chestnut vs. Takeru Kobayashi 

Though he's not eating hot dogs on the Fourth of July, Chestnut will return to the competitive eating spotlight in a big, big way in 2024, by facing an old rival. 

Chestnut will take on nemesis Takeru Kobayashi on Sept. 2 in a live Netflix special titled "Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef."  

"Through all of my years in competitive eating, Kobayashi stands out as my fiercest rival," Chestnut said in a statement. "Competing against him pushed me to be so much better. I know that fans have waited a long time for another chapter of our rivalry and I can't wait for our massive showdown live on Netflix!" 

Kobayashi and Chestnut last jawed off in 2009, with Chestnut chewing out the six-time Mustard Belt winner.

Advice for an Unforgettable Photo Essay

Six steps for turning your images into a memorable photo essay, from curating your best work to crafting a title.

A street cat wanders out of the frame and away from the man. He appears lonely, the only person inhabiting the place in which he seems so comfortably seated. As the eye wanders throughout the frame, however, the viewer discovers more: a vast city cast beyond the street and behind the man’s chair. Possibilities, discovery, and stories: these are some of the most effective elements of a photo essay. Collections of images can help produce a narrative, evoke emotion, and guide the viewer through one or more perspectives. A well-executed photo essay doesn’t rely on a title or any prior knowledge of its creator; it narrates on its own, moving viewers through sensations, lessons, and reactions.

Famous photo essays like Country Doctor by W. Eugene Smith or Gordon Parks’ The Harlem Family are acclaimed for showing a glimpse into the lives of the sick and impoverished. Other well-made photo essays offer a new way to look at the everyday, such as Peter Funch’s much-reposted photo series 42nd and Vanderbilt , for which Funch photographed the same street corner for nine years. As shown by these photographers’ experiences with the medium, a collection of photos can enliven spaces and attitudes. Strong photo essays can give voice to marginalized individuals and shine a spotlight on previously overlooked experiences.

You don’t necessarily need to be a documentary photographer to create a powerful photo essay. Photo essays can showcase any topic, from nature photography to portraiture to wedding shots. We spoke to a few photographers to get their perspectives on what makes a good photo essay, and their tips for how any photographer can get started in this medium. Here are six steps to follow to create a photo essay that tells a memorable story.

Choose a specific topic or theme for your photo essay.

There are two types of photo essays: the narrative and the thematic. Narrative photo essays focus on a story you’re telling the viewer, while thematic photo essays speak to a specific subject.

The most natural method for choosing a topic or theme for your photo essay is to go with what you know. Photograph what you experience. Whether that includes people, objects, or the things you think about throughout the day, accessibility is key here. Common topics or concepts to start with are emotions (depicting sadness or happiness) or experiences (everyday life, city living).

For photographer Sharon Pannen , planning a photo essay is as simple as “picking out a subject you find interesting or you want to make a statement about.”

Consider your photo subjects.

The subjects of your photographs, whether human or not, will fill the space of your photos and influence the mood or idea you’re trying to depict. The subject can determine whether or not your photos are considered interesting. “I always try to find someone that catches my eye. I especially like to see how the light falls on their face and how a certain aesthetic might add to their persona,” says photographer Victoria Wojtan .

While subjects and their interest factor are, well, subjective, when considering your subjects, you should ask yourself about your audience. Do other people want to see this? Is my subject representative of the larger idea my photo essay is trying to convey? Your projects can involve people you know or people you’ve only just met.

“Most projects I work on involve shooting portraits of strangers, so there’s always a tension in approaching someone for a portrait,” says photographer Taylor Dorrell . For Wojtan, that tension can help build trust with a subject and actually leads to more natural images “If there’s tension it’s usually because the person’s new to being photographed by someone for something that’s outside of a candid moment or selfie, and they need guidance for posing. This gives me the opportunity to make them feel more comfortable and let them be themselves. I tend to have a certain idea in mind, but try to allow for organic moments to happen.”

Aim for a variety of images.

Depending on your theme, there are a few types of photos you’ll want to use to anchor your essay. One or two lead photos should slowly introduce the viewer to your topic. These initial photos will function in a similar way to the introductory paragraph in a written essay or news article.

From there, you should consider further developing your narrative by introducing elements like portraiture, close ups, detail shots, and a carefully selected final photo to leave the viewer with the feeling you set out to produce in your photos. Consider your opening and closing images to be the most important elements of your photo essay, and choose them accordingly. You want your first images to hook the viewer, and you also want your final images to leave a lasting impression and perhaps offer a conclusion to the narrative you’ve developed.

Including different types of photos, shot at different ranges, angles, and perspectives, can help engage your viewer and add more texture to your series.

Says photographer Taylor Dorrell: “After I have a group of images, I tend to think about color, composition, the order the images were taken, the subject material, and relevance to the concept.”

Put your emotions aside.

Self-doubt can easily come into play when working with your own photography. The adage that we are our own worst critics is often true. It can be difficult to objectively select your strongest images when creating a photo essay. This is why putting together photo essays is such a useful practice for developing your curatorial skills.

“The most important part for me is getting outside opinions. I don’t do that enough, and have a bias in selecting images that might not be the most powerful images or the most effective sequence of images,” says Dorrell. Your own perception of a photograph can cloud your ability to judge whether or not it adds to your photo essay. This is especially true when your essay deals with personal subjects. For example, a photo essay about your family may be hard to evaluate, as your own feelings about family members will impact how you take and view the photos. This is where getting feedback from peers can be invaluable to producing a strong series.

Collecting feedback while putting your photo essay together can help you determine the strengths, weaknesses, and gaps within the collection of photos you’ve produced. Ask your friends to tell you their favorites, why they like them, and what they think you’re going for in the work you’ve created. Their opinions can be your guide, not just your own emotions.

Edit your photo selection.

Beyond post-production, the series of photos you select as your essay will determine whether you’ve executed your theme or narrative effectively. Can the photos stand alone, without written words, and tell the story you set out to? Do they make sense together, in a logical sequence? The perfect photo essay will give your audience a full picture of the narrative, theme, or essence you’re looking to capture.

A good method to use to cull your images down is to remove as many as half of your images straight away to see if your narrative is still as strong with fewer photos. Or, perhaps, deciding on a small number you’d like to aim for (maybe just five to ten images) and using this as a method to narrow down to the images that tell your story best.

Give your photo essay a title, and add a concise written statement.

Finally, you’ll want to create a title and written statement for your photo essay. This will help position your work and can enable the viewer to fully understand your intention, or at least guide their perspective.

A solid written statement and title will be relevant to your topic, detail your primary objective, and introduce your point of view. It’s an opportunity to clarify your intentions to the viewer and ensure they walk away with a clear interpretation of your work. Depending on your photo essay, you may want to include several paragraphs of text, but even just one or two sentences of background can be enough to expand the viewer’s understanding of your work.

Consider if you’d like to add the written statement at the beginning of your essay to introduce it, or at the end as a conclusion. Either one can be impactful, and it depends how you’d like people to experience your work.

For his photo essay White Fences, excerpted above, Taylor Dorrell wrote only one sentence of introduction. But for his series Over the Rhine, Dorell included a longer written statement to accompany the work, which is “an ongoing photo series that seeks to explore the Cincinnati neighborhood of the same name and its surroundings. The series was started in response to the shooting of Samuel DuBose, an unarmed black man, by officer Ray Tensing of the University of Cincinnati Police, which happened July 19th, 2015.” Dorell’s text goes on to offer more background on the project, setting up the viewer with all the information they need to understand the context of the photo essay.

Enough With the Fireworks Already

For 15 straight years, our old dog Clark — a hound-shepherd-retriever mix who was born in the woods and loved the outdoors ever after — spent the Fourth of July in our walk-in shower. He seemed to believe a windowless shower in a windowless bathroom offered his best chance of surviving the shrieking terror that was raining down from the night sky outside.

Did he think the fireworks, with their window-rattling booms, were the work of some cosmic predator big enough to eat him whole? Did he think they were gunshots or claps of thunder spreading out from inexplicable lightning bolts tearing open the sky above our house?

There’s no way to know what he was thinking, but every single year that rangy, 75-pound, country-born yard dog spent the Fourth of July in our shower, trembling, drooling and whimpering in terror.

Clark was lucky. We have friends whose terrified dog spent one Fourth of July fruitlessly trying to outrun the explosions. The next day a good Samaritan found him lying on a hot sidewalk miles away, close to death. Other friends came home from watching the fireworks to discover that their dog had bolted in terror from their fenced backyard and been killed by a car.

And those were all companion animals, the ones whose terror is clear to us. We have no real way of knowing how many wild animals suffer because the patterns of their lives are disrupted with no warning every year on a night in early July. People shooting bottle rockets in the backyard might not see the sleeping songbirds, startled from their safe roosts, exploding into a darkness they did not evolve to navigate — crashing into buildings or depleting crucial energy reserves . People firing Roman candles into the sky above the ocean may have no idea that the explosions can cause seabirds to abandon their nests or frighten nesting shorebirds to death .

Then there’s the wildlife driven into roads — deer and foxes, opossums and skunks, coyotes and raccoons. Any nocturnal creature in a blind panic can find itself staring into oncoming headlights, unsure whether the greater danger lies in the road or in the sky or in the neighborhood yards surrounding them.

Posts Misrepresent Photo of RFK Jr. With Animal Carcass in Vanity Fair

A photo of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. likely shows him holding the carcass of a goat, lamb or other ruminant animal in Patagonia. Social media posts, citing a Vanity Fair article, make the unsupported claim the photo shows a dog carcass in South Korea. The magazine deleted remarks by a veterinarian who said it was a dog.

In a Vanity Fair article published on July 2, special correspondent Joe Hagan raises questions about the character and credibility of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and highlights his controversial past, including allegations that he sexually assaulted his then-23-year-old babysitter in 1999 and texted images of nude women to his friends.

In response, Kennedy told the Breaking Points podcast on July 2, “The article is a lot of garbage.” Kennedy told the host of the podcast that he is “not a church boy” and has “many skeletons in my closet,” but he declined to comment when asked about the assault allegation. “I’m not going to comment on it,” Kennedy said.

Hagan’s article also published an image of Kennedy posing with an animal carcass. In the original article , Hagan described the photo as Kennedy “posing, alongside an unidentified woman, with the barbecued remains of what appears to be a dog” in 2010. Kennedy sent the photo to a friend last year. The friend told Vanity Fair that Kennedy “sent me the picture with a recommendation to visit the best dog restaurant in Seoul.”

In the original version of the article, Hagan supported the assertion that Kennedy posed with a canine by stating, “A veterinarian who examined the photograph says the carcass is a canine, pointing to the 13 pairs of ribs, which include the tell-tale ‘floating rib’ found in dogs.”

Kennedy responded to this allegation with a post on X on July 2, stating, “Hey @VanityFair , you know when your veterinary experts call a goat a dog, and your forensic experts say a photo taken in Patagonia was taken in Korea, that you’ve joined the ranks of supermarket tabloids.” 

In an interview with Fox News on July 3, Kennedy said that the image is “a real photo,” but told the interviewer, “It’s me in a campfire in Patagonia on the Futaleufu River eating a goat, which is what we eat down there.” In a 2013 interview in Patagon Journal , Kennedy said that he has visited the Futaleufu River at least five times. 

On July 7, Kennedy also posted a video on X responding to the magazine’s claim. In the video, which features his three pet dogs, he refers to the allegation that he posed with a dog carcass as “the height of irresponsible journalism” and calls the article “fake news.”

After Kennedy’s initial response, Vanity Fair revised the article on July 3, replacing the phrase “appears to be a dog” with “what he suggested to the friend was a dog.” Vanity Fair also added Kennedy’s initial response and removed the opinion of the veterinarian who claimed the carcass was a canine.

A representative from Vanity Fair’s parent company, Condé Nast, told us in an email on July 5, “The context for reporting this exchange, as we state in the story, was that this apparent attempt at a joke disturbed Kennedy’s friend, and as such, is part of a larger picture of Kennedy’s recent behavior distressing his friends and family.”

The Condé Nast representative told us that “we did not definitively ID the pictured animal as a dog” in the article. “We reported the date from the metadata — 2010 — but not a location, though Kennedy has incorrectly stated otherwise.” Their response also notes, “Kennedy has not disputed what he told his friend,” and that “the friend was disgusted by the picture and felt this episode illustrated poor judgment.”

By the time Vanity Fair made the changes in the article, other news networks had picked up the story. The New York Post, Newsweek and the New York Daily News published articles citing information from the original version of Vanity Fair’s story that said Kennedy posed with what “appears to be” a dog carcass. 

Multiple viral posts on social media continue to circulate the unsupported claim that Kennedy posed with a dog carcass despite Vanity Fair’s subsequent retraction. The text above the photo on a July 2 Threads post said, “Here’s a photo of RFK Jr posing with a barbecued dog. How can anyone even think about voting for this guy?”

Photo Likely Displays a Patagonian Dish

The preparation style of the carcass and roasting spit displayed in the photo of Kennedy all match closely with images of the popular Patagonian dish “asado al palo” or “cordero al palo,” which roughly translates as “lamb to the post.” The culinary guide Pick Up the Fork explains that while lamb is the favored barbecued meat in Patagonia, goat is more popularly used in Mendoza, Argentina.

We found numerous pictures of carcasses of other ruminants — which refers to hoofed, cud-chewing mammals — prepared on an iron cross in Patagonia that appear extremely similar to the photo published by Vanity Fair. 

National Geographic photographer Michael George published a photo of “a lamb that is being smoked” in a 2017 article titled, “11 Breathtaking Photos from Torres del Paine National Park,” which is located in Chile’s Patagonia region. The lamb in the photo is held by an iron cross that appears nearly identical in structure to the one displayed in the photo with Kennedy.

Tourist cruise company Australis published a 2019 blog post with photos describing asado al palo as “Patagonia’s signature dish.” The article explains the dish is prepared by cutting a lamb “vertically down the torso and splayed across an iron cross or rack,” just as it appears in the image with Kennedy.

The travel guide TasteAtlas describes  cordero al palo as a “traditional lamb specialty that involves roasting a whole lamb on a spit.” The article displays  another image  with a close similarity to the carcass held by Kennedy in the photograph published by Vanity Fair.

We found no similar examples of this cooking technique or the iron cross in South Korean cuisine. 

Opinions of Other Veterinarians

As we noted, in the original version of the Vanity Fair article, the writer cited a veterinarian who said the photo shows a canine based on the “13 pairs of ribs, which include the tell-tale ‘floating rib’ found in dogs.”

However, both dogs and ruminants possess 13 total pairs of ribs as well as some “floating ribs,” meaning that they do not attach to the sternum.

Dr. Patty Scharko , professor of animal and veterinary sciences at Clemson University and former president of the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners , disagreed with the findings of the veterinarian originally cited by Vanity Fair. She told us in an email that “without a head and feet (hooves), it is difficult to determine what species [the carcass] is.”

In a post on X , veterinarian Dr. Crystal Heath offered a different opinion than the veterinarian cited in the original Vanity Fair article. Heath claimed that “the triangular scapula and flattened ribs all point to goat.”

Update, July 10: After examining the photo that appeared in Vanity Fair,  Dr. Ray Wilhite , a professor at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and former president of the  American Association of Veterinary Anatomists , told us in an email that “the scapula looks totally unlike a dog and is consistent with a small ruminant like a goat or sheep.” He also said “the proximal ribs widen out significantly near the costochondral junction,” referring to where the ribs connect to cartilage in the front of the ribcage. It’s an anatomical feature that he said he had “only noticed” in “ruminants and definitely not in dogs.”

Photo Does Not Show RFK Jr. Eating Dog — or Goat

On July 2, 2024, Vanity Fair published a profile of independent U.S. presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr . One claim made in that story, written by Joe Hagan, immediately went viral: that Kennedy had sent a photo of himself appearing to eat dog meat   to a friend while recommending places to eat dog in South Korea.

As originally reported, Vanity Fair wrote :

Last year Robert Kennedy Jr. texted a photograph to a friend. In the photo RFK Jr. was posing, alongside an unidentified woman, with the barbecued remains of what appears to be a dog.  Kennedy told the person, who was traveling to Asia, that he might enjoy a restaurant in Korea that served dog on the menu, suggesting Kennedy had sampled dog. The photo was taken in 2010, according to the digital file's metadata—the same year he was diagnosed with a dead tapeworm in his brain.  (A veterinarian who examined the photograph says the carcass is a canine, pointing to the 13 pairs of ribs, which include the tell-tale "floating rib" found in dogs.)

Kennedy responded to the claim in a July 3, 2024, interview with Fox News' Martha MacCallum, denying that the photo showed him eating dog meat. "It's me in a campfire in Patagonia on the Futaleufu River eating a goat, which is what we eat down there," he told MacCallum. 

Based on several lines of evidence, Kennedy's defense appears to hold up to scrutiny with one exception: The meat in question is more likely to be lamb than goat. By email, Kennedy told Snopes that our conclusion of lamb was, in fact, correct. "You are correct," he wrote when asked if it was possible he confused the two meats. Lamb is the meat of juvenile sheep. 

'Tell-Tale' Sign of Dog?

The claim that 13 pairs of ribs combined with the presence of " floating " ribs make for a "tell-tale" sign of a dog carcass is inaccurate. Several animals, including goats and sheep, have 13 pairs of ribs, including some that are floating — i.e., unattached to the sternum or another rib. 

Vanity Fair appears to have walked back its assertion. The veterinarian's opinion that the carcass in the photo was likely a dog was removed from the story in a July 3, 2024, update. Hagen did not immediately respond to Snopes' request for comment about the removal of that quote or his confidence in his initial determination that the photograph showed dog meat.   

Simply put, neither the presence of 13 rib pairs nor the presence of floating ribs makes for a positive identification of a dog. Sheep and goats are both ruminants, and as such both belong to a class of hoofed mammals with 13 pairs of ribs, including some that are floating . 

The Futaleufú River

In responding to the allegation that the picture showed dog meat, Kennedy said the picture was taken during a whitewater trip down the Futaleufú River in the Patagonia region of Chile. Kennedy has a long history with the Futaleufú River, and the photograph at issue is consistent with travel to this region of the world. 

Kennedy has been going to this river for decades as both a tourist and an advocate against the construction of a hydroelectric dam on it, taking celebrities or family with him. In 2006, he wrote a narrative feature  for The New York Times describing his history with the river and with a guiding outfit named Earth River Expeditions:

In March, I made my third annual trip on the Fu with Earth River Expeditions. This time, I took my 10-year-old daughter, Kyra, who fell in love with the river on her first trip last year, and three of her girlfriends. Among the other guests were Darren Barber, an Olympic gold medalist rower; the "Baywatch" star David Chokachi and his wife, Susan; and the New York financier Michael Falk and his wife, Anne, and their two daughters, Kayla, 12, and Gigi, 10. The Falks were neophyte rafters, and this was also their first camping trip. … A three-hour bus trip on a narrow dirt road introduced us to the stunning landscapes of Andean Patagonia. At the confluence of the Fu and Azul Rivers, we donned wet suits, helmets and life jackets, and paused in a jungle clearing for a safety briefing and a seminar on paddling techniques. Class V white-water rafting is inherently risky, but with experienced guides and good safety plans, it is no more dangerous than skiing or touch football.

Earth River Expeditions' trips to the Futaleufú river have been widely covered in adventure- and conservation- related media, and as a result, we know that one of "the most popular dishes" on this trip is spit-barbecued lamb known as Chilean asado. As described in a 2016 piece for National Geographic:  

Earth River Expeditions include daily lunches at a local restaurant or remote picnic site, such as on the banks of a stunning waterfall swimming hole. Also included are daily chef-prepared breakfasts and dinners served at the lodges. One of the most popular dishes prepared on trips is Chilean asado, spit-barbecued lamb roasted slowly over an open fire.

Chilean asado

While Chilean asado can refer, broadly, to any Chilean open pit barbecue, lamb is what the people in this part of Chile are best-known for cooking in this fashion. As described in a 2016 Vice article about eating lamb in Patagonia:

The wooly livestock form a staple of Patagonian diets, and you can find mutton in any form: on pizzas, in empanadas, and in perfectly spiced burgers. The classic preparation, however, is cordero al palo , which is lamb roasted directly above a wood fire, the carcass stretched across an iron cross. 

This colorful description matches the type of cooking seen in the Vanity Fair photo, and it also matches other photos of this classic Chilean dish. The image below shows lamb being roasted during a Chilean barbecue, prepared in a manner that looks nearly identical to the food Kennedy was pictured with:

The Bottom Line

Because the photo matches a dish frequently served in the region Kennedy claimed the photo to have been taken in, and because Kennedy has a documented history with a guiding service that explicitly serves the meal, Snopes concludes that Kennedy is not pictured with dog meat or goat meat, but with lamb. Presented with this logic, Kennedy agreed with Snopes that he was pictured with lamb and not goat.

The source who shared the photo with Vanity Fair said  Kennedy led him to believe it was dog based on the context in which he sent the photo:

The friend says that Kennedy "sent me the picture with a recommendation to visit the best dog restaurant in Seoul, so he was certainly representing that this was a dog and not a goat. In any case, it's grotesque." by sending it alongside a recommendation of places to eat dog meat in South Korea.

Snopes takes no position on the claim that Kennedy intended to represent the photo he sent to his friend as him eating dog meat. 

However, because the central evidence used to link the image published in Vanity Fair to dog meat is factually incorrect, and because the photo is consistent with lamb meat along multiple lines of evidence, we conclude that the photo itself does not show Kennedy alongside the carcass of a cooked dog and therefore rate this claim "Miscaptioned."

RFK Jr. Really Had Quite a Week

Barbecuing a dog assault allegations 9/11 trutherism.

Donald Trump may be sitting back to watch Democrats implode . But RFK Jr. has opted to seize this moment of existential angst over the future of President Joe Biden’s campaign by presenting himself as, well, more erratic than ever.

All last week, as Democrats were engaged in an internecine struggle, RFK Jr. posted video clips of an alternative debate he had held after not qualifying for the CNN debate; fanned the flames of a damning Vanity Fair exposé that featured several dark secrets from his past; then, seemingly apropos of nothing, posted some unprompted thoughts about 9/11 to X.

The independent candidate clarified in a follow-up tweet that he was responding to “all kinds of speculation on X” and that he was making a political statement in favor of open-mindedness and government transparency for all kinds of controversial issues, including “unidentified anomalous phenomena.”

But the seeming randomness of a 9/11 trutherism statement after a week of bad publicity was an oddly unnecessary attempt to court controversy—when, by all accounts, it could have been a week for RFK Jr. to try to look, as they say, presidential. The Vanity Fair article was a deep dive into his past troubles and his relationship with his family. It also detailed a number of damaging claims about the candidate, including an allegation that he had groped a 23-year-old woman working as a part-time babysitter for his children in the 1990s, and featured a photo of him with what appeared to be a barbecued dog, an image he allegedly sent to a friend with a joke about eating dogs.

The article also detailed the bleak trajectory of Kennedy’s conspiracy-theorist outlook and advocacy. Perhaps the most horrifying example came from 2019, when Kennedy and his wife, Cheryl Hines, flew to American Samoa to meet with the country’s prime minister and promote anti-vaccine policies after two children died there from vaccines that, it turned out, were improperly administered. His campaign was successful; the Samoan prime minister halted the administration of the MMR vaccine. In the months that followed, the island was hit by an outbreak of measles that killed 83. Paul Offit, a pediatrician and member of the Food and Drug Administration’s advisory committee on vaccines, is quoted in the Vanity Fair article, blaming RFK Jr. for the disinformation that led to the deaths. (Kennedy has denied his connection to that outbreak, despite clear evidence of his involvement . In a forthcoming PBS documentary, according to Vanity Fair, RFK Jr. “becomes vividly agitated when confronted with the facts of the Samoa case, insisting that ‘I had nothing to do with people not vaccinating in Samoa; I never told anybody not to vaccinate.’ ”)

The article also hints that most of the Kennedy family sees RFK Jr. as a spoiler candidate who might allow Trump to win the election, a theme that has repeatedly come up in reporting on the candidate. Some of his family members seem to think that his years of heroin abuse permanently altered his brain, causing him to become irrational.

If RFK Jr. were a more serious candidate, the revelations in the Vanity Fair article would have been earth-shattering. But Kennedy has a long history of saying remarkably strange, wrong, and damagingly offensive things . He has dabbled in conspiracy theories about Bill Gates and 5G; compared public health officials with Nazis and anti-vaxxers with Anne Frank; and posited that COVID was “ ethnically targeted ” to spare Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people.

Still, even his defense of himself last week was strange. The candidate appeared on the politics podcast Breaking Points on Tuesday and, when asked about the groping allegation, said, “I am not a church boy.”

“I had a very, very rambunctious youth,” RFK Jr. added. “I said in my announcement speech that I have so many skeletons in my closet that if they could all vote, I could run for king of the world.”

When pressed directly about the allegation, he said he had no comment.

Instead, Kennedy’s camp has, since the Vanity Fair piece, apparently focused almost entirely on refuting the dog-related allegation . His campaign has asserted, on social media and in statements, that the photo featured a goat, not a dog, and that it was taken in South America, not Korea. RFK Jr. described the Vanity Fair story as a “lot of garbage” and alleged that it was coordinating with Democratic Party leadership.

He now appears to have decided he has moved on from his scandals and is posting about Biden’s mental decline and also about his more standard promises: fighting Big Pharma, opposing the prospect of war with Russia. He praised Edward Snowden, promising the whistleblower that he would allow him to “serve his country” again. But above all, RFK Jr. seems to be committed, in the midst of a great existential crisis over the American political system, to being weird in ways big and small. Right now, Kennedy’s pinned post on X is footage of him picking up a western diamondback snake with his bare hands, to have it moved to the wilderness. That was on July 4. Two days before that, the same day the Vanity Fair article dropped, he posted another video of him rescuing a snake.

RFK Jr. Says He Loves, Does Not Eat, Dogs

Even for the remarkable number of Americans who may still vote for him, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is not exactly an ideal candidate. Setting aside the vaccine skepticism — which is likely a pro for many of the RFK-curious — there is his shaky campaign , his wavering on election-defining issues , his long years of philandering , and that pesky brain worm . Late last week, Vanity Fair added to this list with an oppo dump from his own extended family , which included a claim of sexual assault by his former babysitter and a picture of Kennedy from his brain-worm era in which he is pretending to eat a dog that has been roasted on a stick.

In response, RFK Jr. has commented only once on the accusations that he groped his baby sitter, saying on a podcast that he is “not a church boy” and that he is “not going to comment on it.” But the dog stuff? Kennedy was on the defense throughout the long weekend, trying several times to woo back the animal lovers — and animals — in his orbit. On Sunday, he posted an apology to his dogs, which he loves so much that they even have their own car . “Ever since that guy wrote the article about me saying I ate a dog, it hasn’t been the same,” Kennedy said.

“Daddy would never do something like that,” said Kennedy, perhaps not for the first time in his life. He then sat in a dog bed and opened an illustrated book he wrote on noted animal lover Saint Francis of Assisi. “I love you guys, I would never eat a dog,” he said. (In response to the story, Kennedy claimed that the dog was actually a goat, though contemporaneous texts suggest otherwise.)

Kennedy extended his PR campaign beyond the canine world. On July 2, he posted a video of him saving a gopher snake tangled up in some sort of mesh at his daughter’s house in California; after petitioning his wife, Cheryl Hines, and the actress Rachael Harris to keep it, he ultimately let it go.

Two days later, he posted another video in which he relocates a rattlesnake in his driveway — but only after showing Hines his new pet. “Honey, no,” she says in a way that suggests this may actually be a common occurrence at the Kennedy-Hines compound and not just a stunt because her husband posed with a roasted dead dog. To drive the point home, he also picked up a lizard on July 6.

As other presidential candidates deal with bedrock problems in their pitch to the American people, Kennedy’s image rehab is a telling little effort in what could destroy a campaign. Plenty of allegations, including sexual assault, don’t derail candidacies anymore. Being weird with or cruel to dogs? That could be a kill shot. Just ask South Dakota governor Kristi Noem how her vice-presidential chances look after she copped to shooting her hunting dog .
