WEST PALM BEACH — A year before he killed 24-year-old Kassandra Morales , Marcus Hull told a police officer that he “shoots a lot and shoots straight.”

At a murder trial in May, the Lake Worth Beach resident said the opposite was true: that the bullets that struck Morales and wounded three others in a nightclub parking lot were accidental and that he pulled the trigger to scatter the strangers — not hurt them.

Jurors didn’t believe him. They deliberated for six hours before convicting Hull, 33, of premeditated murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm from a weapon. Circuit Judge Jeffrey Gillen sentenced him to four consecutive life sentences Monday, July 1.

Hull turned down a 45-year plea deal with prosecutors ahead of his trial, opting instead to fight the charges against him. At Monday's sentencing hearing, he apologized to Morales' family, thanked them for the kindness they'd shown his wife and prayed for them to find peace.

Yani Pena, Morales' sister-in-law, read aloud a letter that recalled the joy of her life and the horror when it ended.

"You destroyed and crushed the lives of those who loved her the most, while also destroying your life, and the lives of yours," she told Hull. "I feel in my heart that if you could take that moment back, you would. However, the law of man has found you guilty, and for your crime you will spend the rest of your life behind bars."

Chance encounter at La Isla nightclub led to fatal shooting

Hull killed the Greenacres mother of two outside the La Isla Del Encanto nightclub near Palm Springs on April 29, 2018. He also wounded two security guards and a bystander before fleeing from the parking lot and eventually from the state.

Anthony Lorenzano, one of three friends who accompanied Hull to the club on the night of the shooting, told attorneys that Hull was "the kind of person that, if he gets mad, he'll shoot you." Assistant Public Defender Stephanie Gagerie maintained that Hull didn't mean to kill anyone.

Lorenzano said he and Hull arrived at the club well after midnight by happenstance; they were hungry, and La Isla sold food late. While the men ate chicken and plantains, Morales and her boyfriend shared a bottle of Hennessy with friends Kelvin Fajardo and Gabriel Delcid at a table nearby.

The two groups crossed paths shortly after 2 a.m. when Hull and Lorenzano stepped outside to smoke cigarettes. Morales' group had exited the nightclub a minute earlier to call an Uber for Delcid. Morales and her companions were strangers to Hull, but Hull said he saw a look of recognition pass between Lorenzano and Fajardo.

The men had a "longstanding beef" over a woman, Assistant State Attorney Francine Edwards told jurors. Their feud was the catalyst for a brief but explosive fight between the groups outside the nightclub.

"Fists were thrown," the prosecutor said. "Punches were had. Glasses fell off."

Someone knocked Hull, at 6-foot-1 and 250 pounds, on his back.

By the time the club's security guards broke up the fight and began escorting Morales' group away, Hull had returned to his gray Chevrolet Equinox alone. He said Lorenzano, still searching for his glasses, was hidden from view.

"Reasonably believing that his friend is still being attacked, he does the only thing he thinks possible to help in that moment," Gagerie told jurors.

Hull started the car, turned off its headlights and drove to the nightclub's entrance, where he fired several shots out the window. According to Gagerie, he aimed at the ground.

Detectives found murder weapon at home of Hull's relative

Fajardo called Morales' mother at 2:16 a.m. "You have to come here," she said he told her. "Kassandra was shot."

Yamileth Rodriguez arrived at the club 15 minutes later, but her daughter was already en route to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Rodriguez said she followed her there and was barred from seeing Morales while she underwent treatment. At 5:25 a.m., doctors told her she had died.

Detectives identified Hull as the gunman within hours, with the help of surveillance video and witness statements. During a 40-minute interview at the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Hull told investigators that he was in the nightclub parking lot when gunfire began, but he denied shooting anyone.

Hull said he went to a family member’s house in Lake Worth Beach after leaving the nightclub. Deputies obtained search warrants for Hull's home and his relative’s, where they found a garbage bag containing the clothes Hull wore to the club and the 9mm semiautomatic gun he used to kill Morales and wound three others.

Hull, then 29 and with children of his own, was arrested in Georgia after Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County offered a $3,000 reward for information about his whereabouts.

Morales was born in Miami but graduated from Lake Worth High School. She worked as a supervisor for a cleaning company and was a team mom in the youth baseball program at Phipps Park in West Palm Beach. A GoFundMe account in her name raised more than $15,000. The money went toward her funeral and savings accounts for her two sons.

Caribe Group Enterprise, which operated the since-closed La Isla nightclub, agreed to a confidential wrongful death settlement with her family in January.

A family has been left reeling after the abrupt disappearance of a loved one resulted in a suspicious death.

The family of Deundray Cottrell, 31, last saw the doctorate student on the evening of July 4th, when he stepped away from a family gathering in Birmingham, Alabama to check on his dog. He walked upstairs never to be seen alive again, according to local outlets.

Cottrell's body was found under "suspicious" circumstances days later just a block away from where he was last scene, police said. The same day, his death was ruled a homicide and police issued public notice of a search for his partner, Julian Taylor Morris, who hasn't been seen since Friday morning.

Doorbell footage recovered during the search reportedly captured Cottrell racing through yards and hopping gates as if he was "looking for refuge," his family told local news organization AL.com.

The strange series of events has left Cotrell's loved ones and the community baffled. Here's what we know about the case so far.

Who is Deundray Cottrell?

Deundray Cottrell was a 31-year-old Atlanta-based doctorate student working on his PhD after receiving his master's degree in public administration and bachelor's in marketing, according to his Instagram.

He also used social media to show off his many other talents, including modeling, mixology and dance. Cottrell served as the CEO of the dance troupe Skiiboy and often made popular posts sharing his fashion sense and collaborating with different brands.

Cottrell was a "well-loved, well-known, good-hearted person and there’s a lot of people hurting from him being gone,’’ his sister, Angelica Harris, told AL.com when Cottrell originally went missing.

When did Deundray Cottrell go missing?

Cottrell originally went missing on the evening of Thursday, July 4.

Cottrell arrived in Birmingham from Atlanta Thursday to celebrate the holiday with his family, according to a police press release . He was spending time at a family member's home when, around 10 p.m., he told his sister he was going upstairs to check on his dog because of fireworks going off.

“He went and checked on the dog and I never saw him again,’’ Harris told AL.com.

Police said they were called to the home that night when friends and family couldn't find Cottrell. He was last seen on foot, said police, and the family told AL.com that Cottrell's partner reported seeing him take off through the backyard after a conversation in the house.

The family told the local outlet that they found Cottrell’s sunglasses, cell phone and one of his shoes while searching for him. Police later found some of Cottrell’s clothing around where he went missing and reviewed surveillance footage from neighbors, which showed him walking in the area.

Cortell's family told AL.com that the recovered Ring doorbell footage showed him running through yards and jumping gates as if he was "running for his life."

The family and police searched through Friday and into Saturday for Cottrell.

USA TODAY has reached out to Birmingham Police and Harris for comment.

Deundray Cottrell found dead

Unfortunately, Cottrell was found deceased two days later around 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Police have yet to release the circumstances of Cottrell's death but did call it "suspicious" upon discovery. The same day, the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on Cottrell and ruled the manner of death homicide, the Birmingham Police Department announced online that evening.

It was also in that post that Julian Taylor Morris was named a person of interest in the investigation.

Who is Julian Taylor Morris?

Julian Taylor Morris, 31, was Cottrell's romantic partner and is a person of interest in the investigation. Police believe he may have been the last person to see or hear from Cottrell the evening of his disappearance.

Morris and Cottrell initially came to Birmingham together to celebrate the holiday, Angelica Harris told AL.com. Morris was allegedly in the house when Cottrell went inside to check on his dog around 10 p.m. and told the family he had spoken with Cottrell, according to AL.com.

The family told AL.com they felt Morris was acting "erratically" as they searched for Cottrell that night. The family told the outlet they saw Morris Friday morning but have not seen him since.

Police, who are offering a $5,000 reward for any information on Morris' whereabouts, describe him as a 5'6", 160-pound Black male.

Lester VanMeter and the Turgut family represent the best of Indiana chess

Lester VanMeter has been at the top of Indiana's chess scene for the better part of half a century. At 71, he's a six-time state champion in chess; the first came in 1976 and he became the oldest person to hold that distinction this year.

It's not supposed to work that way. Aydin Turgut, for example, won the United States title when he was 7 and living in South Bend.

But the best chess players in Indiana have connected to the game in different ways.

Lester VanMeter's rise

It took VanMeter 13 years to reach Indiana's chess pinnacle after he began playing as a 10-year-old in 1963. Although he was born in South Bend, his chess journey started at Russ' Barber Shop in Niles, Michigan.

He remembered first going to the shop with his mother and brother. While they got their hair cut, he played chess against barbers and customers.

"I lost almost every game (during) the first year," VanMeter said. "In the second year, I won about one quarter of the games. The third year I won about half the games. Then in the fourth year I was winning 75% of the games and in the fifth year I was winning almost every game."

By then, VanMeter was ready to begin high school, where he discovered the United States Chess Federation. He began trying to compete in tournaments, but since his parents didn't let him travel much due to his age, he quickly settled into becoming the best chess player in northern Indiana.

Once he hit his mid-30s, VanMeter knew he was at the top of his game. Not only did he pick up an Indiana State Championship in 1993, but he made a podium finish at the United States Open Championships.

Playing professional chess to make most of his living for nearly a decade, VanMeter realized the unstable job security that came with his unusual profession's competitive age range.

"As soon as you just pass 30, you're in big trouble, just like a baseball player," VanMeter said.

Using his college degree in physics, he worked for General Motors for three decades to help support his family. Now retired, VanMeter said he has more time to play chess internationally, something he did sparingly during his prime. In some of his most recent ventures overseas, VanMeter has competed in tournaments in Iceland and New Zealand.

His 2024 Indiana chess Champion crown at 71 makes him the oldest to win the honor.

"But this year, my preparation was different," VanMeter said.

William Clayton Ralph, a chess apprentice of VanMeter's for 45 years, found himself in hospice just one week prior to the 2024 Indiana chess championship tournament. Instead of his usual at-home preparation and practice, VanMeter spent that week leading up to the biggest tournament of the year staying with Ralph in hospice.

The day after VanMeter won his first chess state championship since 1993, making for a historic 31-year gap between victories, he made his way back to Ralph in Noblesville.

"To actually be able to take that trophy before he died was really an emotional thing," VanMeter said. "This championship really meant a lot more to me, because I was able to actually take that trophy and show Gil. He passed away there that same day after I showed him."

In the four months since, VanMeter has been able to find peace with Ralph's death and recognize the story as a heart-warming one.

A familiar prodigy

Aydin still remembers learning how to play chess.

As a toddler, he saw his father's chess board and began carelessly playing with the pieces as if they were toys. Most 3-year-olds would, after all.

But his father, Tansel, wanted to not only let his son know that chess pieces should not be treated like toys, but wanted to teach young Aydin the game he holds so dear. Tansel began playing chess as a 13-year-old in Turkey, and before he even turned 20, became chess champion of his home country's capital, Ankara.

"It's always fascinating," Tansel said. "When you play chess, you get away. You forget about all the troubles, you forget about all the stress. It gets you into a different kind of world."

He was the third-best player in Turkey by the time he was 26. Before he turned 35, he was representing the country in the 2000 chess Olympics.

Since moving to the United States before Aydin was born, Tansel has earned the State Champion crown in Louisiana, Michigan and, most recently, Indiana. However, he has played less and less chess as the years have progressed due to his day job as a cardiologist in South Bend.

In fact, Tansel believes his career and his most successful hobby have a lot in common. He described chess as a combination of sport and science, as the board game creates struggle and requires strategy.

"It's like painting," Tansel said. "It's like doing something creative; you create a piece of art and not everyone understands it, but you understand it."

Now, he only plays in a couple of tournaments per year, despite still playing online anywhere from three minutes to one hour every day for practice. And while Tansel has slowed down, Aydin is as strong a chess competitor as he ever has been.

Aydin won his first United States chess championship when he was 7 years old. He won three more before he started high school. As a freshman and sophomore at Culver Academy, Aydin won back-to-back Indiana State Championships in 2019 and 2020.

He believes his early success in a game that previously favored players near the age of 30 came down to his constant online practice. Aydin thought back to his time waking up at 6 a.m. as a young child, hopping on his family's computer and playing numerous quick games of chess before school every day.

"Chess is so much more accessible now," Aydin said. "There's like hundreds of millions of players that play online, so there should be more people that end up being really strong. So many kids that are like 10 or 12 years old, they just play all day on Chess.com. And they're really good. Being able to play against Grandmasters is invaluable."

Even though he doesn't play as much chess as he did before his junior year of high school, Aydin still remains one of the top chess players at his age range in the country. He is even the President of Princeton University's Chess Club.

Despite only holding this role for one academic year so far, Aydin has already taken a step back to realize the game that comes so natural to him can be quite intimidating to others. However, one of the things that attracts Aydin to chess the most is that the skill-based nature of it makes it possible for anyone to become great.

Perhaps more importantly, Aydin said chess has taught him the significance of values of patience, struggle and acceptance.

"I think the beauty of chess is that no matter how good you are, no matter how high rated you are, if you don't play a good game you will not win," Aydin said. "... You have to really be diligent and treat everyone with respect."
