Spanish Materials by Panda Speech

I received some questions about my Spanish materials on Teachers Pay Teachers so I thought I would share a little about them. I learned Spanish as a second language when I was a teenager and have continued to learn ever since! I currently Skype once a week with a teacher in Mexico to keep up my conversational skills and I have also used the program Pimsluer. When I create a resource in Spanish I send it to 3-4 native Spanish speakers on my team to check for errors or dialectical issues. There are so many dialects in the Spanish language, so I primarily use the one that is in my region (Texas). I have received amazing feedback and it has encouraged me to continue translating my products so that more students can have access to them. I currently have articulation crafts, toy companions, favorites boards, category cards, and an interactive book available! I will be adding more soon! Make sure you are following my TPT store and social media accounts to get notifications on when new products are posted! Click here to see all of my Spanish products on TPT

These were designed to be simple, no-prep activities to target articulation in an engaging way. It is a simple cut and paste craft! Current themes available (click on them to see in TPT): Box of Chocolates , Robots , Recycling , Treasure Chest , Bunnies , Thunderstorm , Fiesta Foods , Apps , and Toolbox . Spanish Phonemes included: ★Initial/medial: p, b, m, j(h), d, t, k, g, f, ch, ll, rr ★Initial/medial/final: n, s, l ★medial/final: r ★Initial/medial: rblends ★Initial lblends ★medial: ñ ★blank pages (this comes with a printing guide, to find the phonemes you need quickly!) • Don't see a sound you need? I include a blank page to use with any speech/language target.

Game Companions

speech therapy in spanish word

Bloques BUNDLE! Articulación y Lenguaje: Speech Therapy UN-stacking Game Companion Spanish Articulation Words and Language Targets I love playing stacking blocks in therapy but my students often got frustrated with how easy it is to knock over (and some of my students would knock it over or bump the table on purpose). I wanted to figure out a way to play this game without as much frustration! This is how my Blocks/Bloques products were born! Spanish Phonemes included: ★Initial/medial: p, b, m, j(h), d, t, k, g, f, ch, ll, rr ★Initial/medial/final: n, s, l ★medial/final: r ★Initial/medial: rblends ★Initial lblends ★medial: ñ ★blank pages (this comes with a printing guide, to find the phonemes you need quickly!) • Don't see a sound you need? I included a blank page to use with any speech/language target. This activity covers the following language objectives using functional vocabulary in Spanish. • Categories (name the category, name items in a category, which one doesn’t belong) • Compare/Contrast (with 2 options: same/different on separate tiles or same/different on the the same tile). • Wh-Questions (who, what, when, where, why, how, and mixed) • Antonyms • Synonyms • Defining (with visual cues: what category, what does it do, what does is look like, what is is made of, what do you do with it). • Describing (with five senses visual cues) • Present Progressive Verbs • Past Tense Verbs • Plurals • Multiple Meaning Words • Blank Templates (Name the Category, Wh Questions, Defining, Describing, & a generic blank template). • Fillable (type-able) blank page → Game Play: Start off by telling your students this isn’t the regular stacking block game (where you take blocks off and stack them back on top). Tell them this is an UN-stacking game! Each player will carefully remove a block out of the tower (they are not allowed to take one of the top blocks until the tower is down to 2 layers or no other blocks can be removed without it tumbling down). Then they get to choose a block on their mat to put it on. The student will produce target phoneme and then place the block over it. Practice 7X per block to get over 100 productions per mat!

Toy Companions

Spanish Phonemes included: ★Initial/medial: p, b, m, j(h), d, t, k, g, f, ch, ll, rr ★Initial/medial/final: n, s, l ★medial/final: r ★Initial/medial: rblends ★Initial lblends ★medial: ñ ★blank pages (this comes with a printing guide, to find the phonemes you need quickly!) • Don't see a sound you need? Assembly: To assemble the cards, print pages 2-25 front to back (the die will be on one side and the pictures on the other). Cut out and laminate. Ways to play: Build A.... Series companion: Use this card deck while playing any of my Build A... games. Set up the game as directed and arrange these cards in decks by the die number on the back. Have your students roll the die and answer questions from the corresponding deck. After each answer is given the student will choose the game piece that corresponds with the number rolled and put it on their building board. If the students gets a Free Roll card they get to put a piece on their board without having to answer a question. Stand alone activity: You do not have to own a Build A.... game to use this card deck. Simply arrange the cards in decks by the die number. Have your student roll the die and then answer a question that corresponds with the number they rolled. If the students gets a Free Roll card they get to put a piece on their board without having to answer a question.

Best Tools and Tips to Provide Speech Therapy in Spanish

speech therapy in spanish word

Providing speech therapy in Spanish is a challenge for speech-language pathologists (SLP) who do not speak fluent Spanish. Working in early intervention for as long as I have, I have extensive experience with Spanish speaking families. But, I am one of those SLPs who are at a disadvantage not being fluent in Spanish. I always had an amazing Spanish interpreter with me for home visits, and this was truly a gift. Despite not being able to communicate in Spanish, I felt that parents sensed that I cared and gave it my all.

Suggestions for working with Spanish speaking families

With families who speak Spanish as their primary language, here are a few suggestions I have learned along the way.

1. Encourage parents to use their primary language.

Parents are often concerned that their child will have difficulty learning English, especially if they continue to use Spanish at home. To the contrary, encourage parents to speak to their children in the language that they speak best. When parents are more fluent in Spanish than English, they have a larger vocabulary in that language. To learn to talk and be successful in school, children need to hear and understand thousands of words. They need to hear rich vocabulary spoken. Because of that need, encourage parents to talk to their kids, engage with them in daily activities, read books to them in Spanish. Learning English can be explored also, but focus on Spanish.

2. Be aware of TV use

Parents may feel that kids can best learn English through the TV. Although there are certainly excellent children’s programs on TV, they will never take the place of human communication. Encourage all parents, regardless of what language they speak, to substitute daily activities done together for excessive TV use.

3. Use specific vocabulary of daily routines

Tell parents to use specific vocabulary of daily routines. This suggestion was described by a native Spanish speaker and educator in early intervention. She mentioned her tendency to use less descriptive words such as “this” or “here” instead of more specific words. For example, we may say, “Put this over there,” as opposed to “Put your hat in the basket.” As a result, encourage parents to limit words like “aqui, ese, or esa” and suggest they substitute with the actual name of the objects.

4. Using my WE CAN TALK techniques

When working with families in early intervention, I use my WE CAN TALK techniques, focusing on one technique per day. While coaching Spanish families, I use my techniques below called, HABLEMOS, which means, “Let’s Talk.” These techniques do not follow the exact order of WE CAN TALK, but they do contain the same techniques. With HABLEMOS, I would start by teaching the letters, O and S, which discuss waiting and commenting.

I’m happy to share Hablemos with you and hope it will be helpful to Spanish speaking families.

Use our Talk It Rock It songs to encourage language development, imitation, articulation, and more in Spanish.

People have asked me what activities are available for speech therapy in Spanish. They have also asked me how to improve speech and language skills in Spanish speaking children. When working with Spanish speaking families, I always felt at a loss in having materials that I could share with them.

As a result, with the help of 2 Spanish speaking SLPs, I developed our Spanish song set, Digo y canto, which includes songs and printable visuals for speech and language practice. This set also includes a manual and translated words for SLPs who are not bilingual but want to provide Spanish activities. You can listen to song samples and see the speech and language goals of each song here .

Website suggestions

After a bit of searching, I also found a blog article listing 20 websites that feature Spanish language activities. To assess that site, check here . I cannot say whether these sites are legitimate or not, but it is a place to start.

Contact your state speech and hearing association to ask for specific names of bilingual speech language pathologists in your area. You can also go to the American Speech and Hearing websit e to search for bilingual SLPs in your area.

The Best Speech Therapy Materials at Your Finger Tips

The Best Way to Use These Free Speech Therapy Materials

There will always be a high need for speech therapy materials. We had been thinking about ways we could stop SLPs from recreating the wheel.

  • We get emails from SLPs with specific therapy needs and rather than just sending that individual what they need, we wanted to share the love.
  • When we present nationally and internationally, we wanted to give people a link to the materials as well as a way to share with their colleagues.
  • When we reference topics in our blog essays, we wanted to create an environment where the articles point back to one speech and language therapy materials library that was easy to remember.
  • We want to know how we can best help the field of speech pathology. By seeing what people are asking for, it creates a picture of what the biggest problems that the field is facing. Then we can make more free speech therapy materials around those topics and even invite experts in to speak at our conferences.

Fast forward, and our speech therapy materials page and evaluation resources page have dozens of materials that have collectively been downloaded over 100,000 times. They are the two most bookmarked pages that we have.

For those of you that have been following us for years know that this list has grown tremendously! So we wanted to highlight some of the best speech therapy materials above, especially the ones that have been downloaded over 10,000 times. They are organized alphabetically, so if you read about something you like just scroll back up, preview, and download it.

Must Have Speech Therapy Materials

So just what are the most used and talked about materials from above? These five resources make up half of the total downloads. We think they’re great, but aside from that they are definitely always a hot topic among SLPs. They’re also quite unique–I really don’t that that any speech therapy materials companies have made any products like these.

Best Speech Therapy Materials for Special Populations

Another area that causes us to scramble is when we get assigned a life skills classroom or we are working with a child with multiple disabilities. Here are some of the best speech therapy materials we have created from our life skills work, 3-year-old classrooms, and clients in the clinic.

  • Lifeskills English and Spanish Story Communication Boards

Bilingual Speech Therapy Materials

Bilingual speech therapy materials are hard to come by under any circumstance and this issue is the basis for making all of our books  suitable for children who speak multiple languages. Truly all of our materials can be used with bilingual students. Here, we wanted to use this environment to showcase some materials for bilingual speech therapy that aren’t talked about much.

 Preschool Speech Therapy Materials

And what about the little guys? Preschool speech therapy materials are special because working with young children who have minimal communication and need to learn behaviors and how to follow directions so that can actually participate in speech therapy. The SLP and the Bilingual ‘R’

speech therapy in spanish word

I am very fortunate to work in a multicultural school, for someone whose job is language there is no better place. Over the years I have observed an articulation variation that I have dubbed the Bilingual ‘R’.   The Bilingual ‘R’ is when a student speaks two languages and is able to accurately produce /r/ in only one language. My building houses a dual language program in which students are educated in English and Spanish, from Kindergarten, with the goal being that they will be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking in both languages.  I have found several students over the years who can produce a beautiful Spanish /r/ and then struggle to make an English version.  I have seen this in students who are native English and native Spanish speakers.  So what’s an SLP to do? They clearly can produce a great /r/, so why doesn’t it stick?

In Spanish, /r/ can be produced in different ways. It can be trilled ( think about how you quickly move your tongue if you want to imitate a purring cat ) or tapped.  A tap /r/ is simply that, the tongue is quickly tapped in position to produce the sound. We know in English the position and movement for /r/ production is a bit different.  When I have native English speaking students brought up for their English /r/ because it is starting to impact them, I automatically listen to their Spanish /r/ as well. If they can trill their Spanish /r/ it is a great place to start.

I typically will have them start by trilling their /r/, not for a word, but just the phoneme.  Then I will have them stop but give them the instruction to keep their tongue in position as if they were about to start trilling again. Finally, I ask them to round their lips and repeat an English,  initial /r/ word such as ‘rat’. Usually the first try is not perfect, but it is more accurate then before.  I continue to shape the /r/ from there.

What if they are native Spanish and cannot produce an /r/? Here we need to keep cultural production in mind. Shaping a Spanish /r/ with the goal to produce a tap /r/ is usually a good place to start.  A tap /r/ can be shaped pretty nicely from /d/. Have the student start by producing an initial /d/ word in Spanish such as dia ( day, FYI there should be an accent mark for on the /i/ but I couldn’t get my computer to do it ). Have them say the word a few times, then just the /d/.  Have them keep repeating /d/ and slowly move their lips to a rounded position. They should hear the sound change. Finally, have them hold their tongue as if they were to say /d/ but have them move it a bit farther back towards the alveolar ridge and say a medial /r/ word such as ‘mariposa’ ( butterfly ). I know that typically we would want start with an initial /r/ word, but the majority of initial Spanish /r/ words are trilled.

We know that not every strategy will work for every child, these just happen to be the ones I have had success with.

SLPs Boost Spanish Language Skills with Printable Multisyllabic Word Cards

Products in Action

Multisyllabic words are often a difficult concept for students who are bilingual to grasp. There are a lot of multisyllabic words in Spanish. Far more, actually, than there are in the English language. This makes it challenging for the bilingual student who has struggles with speech. While working with my students I saw them continually struggle. I wanted to give them more practice with 4 and 5-syllable words. So, I created Spanish Multisyllabic Word Picture Cards .

This multisyllabic word picture cards resource works well with students at the elementary level. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) can use these during speech therapy sessions, SPED teachers can use them with small groups or individual students, and general education teachers can even use them in their classroom settings! This resource was created to be easy to use and versatile.

How to use multisyllabic word picture cards.

To use the printable word picture cards, simply choose to print either the colored or black and white version of this resource. I suggest printing the colored cards on a thick paper like card stock. Then laminatw for extra durability and extended use. Your students will love using the colored cards during speech sessions so save them for class or session work.

I like to print the black and white copy for homework practice. This provides parents an idea of what we are practicing in sessions (or class). It also gives them a fun and engaging way of practicing at home using a resource they are already familiar with. Many parents have thanked me for sending these cards home. That’s because they have been extremely helpful to both students and parents practicing two languages.
