speech on our good earth

Vice President Kamala Harris: ( 00:00 ) Your excellencies, distinguished leaders, and esteemed colleagues from around the world, welcome to this historic Leaders Summit on Climate. I want to thank you for being here, and for your leadership. I have spoken with a number of you about the climate crisis. We have talked about the scarcity of water, we have talked about the need to build resilience, and we have talked about the importance of investing in clean technologies. Together, of course, we come from very different places, but we share this common concern and this common threat. Here in the United States, the storms hitting our Gulf Coast are worse every year. The wildfires in my home state of California have grown in intensity. And of course, no nation or region is immune. Whether it is Western Europe, where heatwaves have made it very difficult to stay indoors while risking a health risk, or the Pacific Islands, where rising sea levels threaten to encroach on the land and homes of lifelong residents, or in Central America, where last year, two major hurricanes devastated entire communities.

Vice President Kamala Harris: ( 01:22 ) As a global community, it is imperative that we act quickly and together to confront this crisis, and this will require innovation and collaboration around the world. It will require the use of renewable energy and new technologies, and it will give each of our nations the opportunity to build healthier communities and stronger economies. Here, we believe tackling climate change, improving communities, and creating jobs can occur simultaneously, and we must recognize the importance of course, of justice, in the work that we do. The communities hardest hit by climate change are the same communities harmed by wealth and gender inequality, toxic air pollution, and so much more. This truth holds around the world. So I urge all of us to focus on these communities, including Indigenous communities, and consider their insight and experience in our efforts moving forward. They are critical leaders in this fight.

Vice President Kamala Harris: ( 02:36 ) Friends, the health of our communities, the well-being of our workers, and the strength of our economies depend on what we do now, and I can think of no one more committed to achieving our collective goals, than President Joe Biden. The president was one of the first members in the United States Congress to take the issue of climate change, and on our first day in office, he led the fact that we would rejoin the Paris Agreement. And the president is just getting started, as we work to tackle this crisis, while creating clean energy jobs across our nation. It is now my great honor to introduce the President of the United States, Joe Biden.

President Joe Biden: ( 03:24 ) Thank you, Madam Vice-President. Good morning to all our colleagues around the world, the world leaders for taking part in this summit, I thank you. Your leadership on this issue is a statement to the people of your nation and to the people of every nation, especially our young people that we’re ready to meet this moment, and meeting this moment is about more than preserving our planet, it’s also about providing a better future for all of us. That’s why when people talk about climate, I think jobs. Within our climate response lies an extraordinary engine of job creation and economic opportunity, ready to be fired up. That’s why I’ve proposed a huge investment in American infrastructure and American innovation to tap the economic opportunity that climate change presents to our workers and our communities, especially those too often that I’ve left out and left behind.

President Joe Biden: ( 04:23 ) I’d like to build, I want to build a critical infrastructure to produce and deploy clean technology, both those we can harness today, and those that we’ll invent tomorrow. I talked to the experts, and I see the potential for a more prosperous and equitable future. The signs are unmistakable, the science is undeniable, and the cost of inaction keeps mounting. The United States is in waiting. We are resolving to take action, not only our federal government, but our cities and our states all across our country, small businesses, large businesses, large corporations, American workers in every field. I see an opportunity to create millions of good paying middle-class union jobs. I see lineworkers laying thousands of miles of transmission lines for a clean, modern, resilient grid. I see workers capping hundreds of thousands of abandoned oil and gas wells that need to be cleaned up, and abandoned coal mines that need to be reclaimed, putting a stop to the methane leaks, and protecting the health of our communities.

President Joe Biden: ( 05:35 ) I see auto workers building the next generation of electric vehicles, and electricians installing nationwide for 500,000 charging stations along our highways. I see the engineers and the construction workers building new carbon capture and green hydrogen plants to forge cleaner steel and cement, and produce clean power. I see farmers deploying cutting edge tools to make soil of our heartland, the next frontier in carbon innovation. By maintaining those investments and putting these people to work, the United States sets out on the road to cut greenhouse gases in half, in half by the end of this decade. That’s where we’re headed as a nation, and that’s what we can do, if we take action to build an economy that’s not only more prosperous, but healthier, fairer, and cleaner for the entire planet.

President Joe Biden: ( 06:36 ) These steps will set on America on a path of net zero emissions economy by no later than 2050. But the truth is, America represents less than 15% of the world’s emissions. No nation can solve this crisis on our own, as I know you all fully understand. All of us, all of us, and particularly those of us who represent the world’s largest economies. We have to step up. Those that do take action and make bold investments in their people, and clean energy future, will win the good jobs of tomorrow and make their economies more resilient and more competitive.

President Joe Biden: ( 07:16 ) So let’s run that race. Win more, win more sustainable future than we have now. Overcome the existential crisis of our times. We know just how critically important that is, because scientists tell us that this is the decisive decade. This is the decade we must make decisions that will avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis. We must try to keep the Earth’s temperature to an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The world beyond 1.5 degrees means more frequent and intense fires, floods, droughts, heatwaves, and hurricanes, tearing through communities, ripping away lives and livelihoods, increasingly dire impacts to our public health. It’s undeniable, [inaudible 00:08:08], the idea of accelerating and punishing the reality that will come, if we don’t move. We can’t resign ourselves to that future. We have to take action, all of us, and this summit is our first step on the road we’ll travel together, God willing all of us, to, and through Glasgow this November in the UN Climate Change Conference.

President Joe Biden: ( 08:32 ) To set our world on a path to a secure, prosperous, and sustainable future, the health of communities throughout the world depends on it. The well-being of our workers depends on it. The strength of our economies depends on it. The countries that take decisive action now to create the industries of the future, will be the ones that reap the economic benefits of the clean energy boom that’s coming. We’re here at this summit to discuss how each of us, each country, can set higher climate ambitions that will in turn, create good paying jobs, advance innovative technologies, and help vulnerable countries adapt to climate impacts. We have to move. We have to move quickly to meet these challenges. The steps our countries take between now and Glasgow will set the world up for success to protect livelihoods around the world, and keep global warming at a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius. We must get on the path now in order to do that.

President Joe Biden: ( 09:40 ) If we do, we’ll breathe easier, literally and figuratively. We’ll create good jobs here at home for millions of Americans, and lay a strong foundation for growth for the future, and that can be your goal as well. This is a moral imperative, an economic imperative, a moment of peril, but also a moment of extraordinary possibilities. Time is short, but I believe we can do this, and I believe that we will do this. Thank you for being part of the summit. Thank you for the communities and the commitments you have made, and the communities you’re from. God bless you all, and I look forward to progress that we can make together today and beyond. We really have no choice. We have to get this done.

Earth Day Speech Example #1

Look around you—breathe in the fresh air, feel the warmth of the sun, and listen to the gentle rustle of leaves. Our planet provides us with an abundance of resources, beauty, and sustenance. It is a priceless gift, one that we must cherish and safeguard for future generations.

We must start by recognizing the impact of our daily actions. It is not enough to simply talk about saving the planet; we must translate our words into meaningful deeds. Let us pledge to reduce our carbon footprint by conserving energy, embracing renewable sources, and adopting eco-friendly practices. Small changes in our lifestyles, such as recycling, reducing waste, and using public transportation, can have a profound impact when multiplied by millions.

However, our efforts should not be limited to a single day. Earth Day should serve as a catalyst for long-term commitment and action. Let us embrace a sustainable mindset and integrate it into our daily lives. Let us pass on a legacy of environmental stewardship to future generations.

Earth Day Speech Example #2

Ladies and gentlemen,

However, we cannot ignore the pressing challenges that our Earth faces today. Climate change is a stark reality, with rising temperatures, melting glaciers, and unpredictable weather patterns. Pollution continues to plague our air, land, and water, posing a threat to ecosystems and human health. And the rampant destruction of forests and habitats threatens the very existence of countless species.

Embracing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, conserving water, and reducing waste are just a few examples of the changes we can make in our lives. By making conscious choices, we can minimize our ecological footprint and inspire others to do the same.

Remember, Earth Day is not just a single day of observance; it is a call to action that reverberates throughout the year. Let us pledge to make every day Earth Day—a day when we consciously strive to protect and preserve our planet.

Earth Day Speech Example #3

Climate change, caused by human activities, poses a significant challenge. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and the loss of biodiversity are all consequences of our actions. Pollution, deforestation, and overconsumption further compound these issues, putting our planet’s health at risk.

Education is another crucial aspect of effecting change. We must educate ourselves and others about the importance of environmental conservation. By raising awareness and promoting understanding, we can empower individuals to make informed decisions and take meaningful action. From schools to community organizations, let us prioritize environmental education and equip future generations with the knowledge they need to protect our planet.

In conclusion, as we celebrate Earth Day, let us remember that our actions matter. Let us honor the Earth by living in harmony with nature and inspiring others to do the same. Together, we can build a sustainable and resilient world, one where the beauty and vitality of our planet can be enjoyed by generations to come.

Speech No.1: Speech On Earth Day Celebration

  • Speaker: Professionals, Students, Teacher
  • Audience: General or Expert Gathering

Good morning,

Ladies and gentlemen, my dear student and Present Dignitaries

I am…(Self Intro.). It is my pleasure to speak in front of you.

Today is April 22, and this day is celebrated as Earth Day all over the world. Earth Day is more than just a day; it serves as a reminder to value and protect our beautiful world. It was initially commemorated in 1970 and has since grown into a worldwide celebration by people, groups, and governments to support environmental protection, sustainability, and initiatives to deal with issues like habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.

Sometimes it can seem like the last place you want to be is on Earth. In Indian tradition, the notion that the earth is the mother is firmly ingrained. We emerge from the soil. Only a representative who was also born on the same planet is our biological mother. The soil that we carry on our bodies is our true mother. The body you are carrying right now was once an insect, snake, cow, monkey, and human being, among millions of other bodies.

I am not referring to the evolution process, but rather the soil that supports all life. Not a commodity, but soil. It is significantly more intelligent and capable than you, and it is older and wiser. It is a much more extensive process than you personally know.

And there is no denying that our planet is dealing with some serious problems. A lot of issues need to be addressed, such as the destruction of biodiversity, deforestation, pollution, and climate change.

The greatest threat we are now facing is probably change in the environment or climate. As a result of the rise in global temperatures, extreme weather events like heat waves, droughts, and floods are becoming more frequent and severe. These disasters cause significant damage to ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

Pollution is another significant issue. Our oceans, air, and soil are all negatively impacted by pollution, which also has an adverse influence on human and animal health. The use of single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable materials has a significant impact on pollution.

Earth Day acts as an indicator of how crucial it is to protect the environment. Now is the perfect time to consider how human actions affect the environment and make changes in our lifestyles to lessen our carbon footprint. The commemoration of Earth Day also contributes to raising awareness of the risks posed by climate change and the necessity of taking action to limit additional harm.

World Earth Day is a significant occasion that serves as a reminder of the value of our planet and the necessity of taking steps to safeguard it. Despite the numerous obstacles we face, there are many things we can do to change things.

Let’s pledge to take action today and every day to protect the environment for the coming generations. Let’s pledge to do something to make the world more sustainable on World Earth Day. Let’s endeavor to lessen our carbon footprint and educate ourselves and others about environmental issues. Along with planting trees and restoring wetlands and marine habitats, we must also safeguard and preserve our natural ecosystems.

We can also support Earth Day by using less electricity, conserving water from the faucet, disposing of trash properly, avoiding the use of toxic chemicals in bathroom drains, sharing our vehicles, and driving an electric vehicle.

If we all make the decision to take steps toward a greener planet, the Earth Day celebration can result in a noticeable difference. Although the path to environmental sustainability won’t be simple, we must take it in order to protect our world and the generations that follow. We must cooperate for a better future, as it is our joint duty to save and restore our planet.

Thank you

Speech No.2: Speech On World Earth Day For Students

(4 to 5 Min. Speak time)

  • Speaker: School And College Student, Teacher
  • Audience: Students, Teachers, General Publi c

Respected Principle, Teachers, and my dear students,

Today is a very special day! It’s a day that brings all of us together to celebrate and cherish the incredible home we share – our beautiful planet Earth! Welcome to the World Earth Day celebration!

On this day, we take a moment to appreciate the wonders of nature that surround us. From the lush green forests to the sparkling blue oceans, from the tall mountains to the vast deserts, our Earth is filled with breathtaking sights and amazing creatures.

You might wonder why we celebrate Earth Day. Well, it’s because we want to remind ourselves of how important it is to take care of our planet. Just like how we look after our toys, our books, and our pets, we must also take care of the Earth.

There are many simple things we can do to help our planet stay healthy and happy. One of the most important things is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. By using less plastic and paper, we can protect our oceans and forests. And when we recycle, we give new life to old things!

Let’s also remember to save energy! Turning off lights and appliances when we don’t need them helps the Earth and saves our parents’ money too! Isn’t that cool?

Another way we can show love to the Earth is by planting trees. Trees are like magical guardians of our planet. They give us fresh air to breathe and provide homes for many animals. So, let’s all become little tree planters and watch our efforts grow tall and strong!

We should also be kind to the animals and plants that live with us on Earth. Just like we care for our pets, we must show love and respect to all living creatures. Remember, we are all connected in this wonderful web of life!

Now, you might think, “I’m just a kid, how can I make a difference?” Well, let me tell you a secret – you have tremendous power! Each one of you can be an Earth superhero! By spreading the message of love and care for our planet, you can inspire others to join in the effort too.

So, on this World Earth Day, let’s make a promise together. Let’s promise to be kind to our planet every day! Let’s promise to do our best to protect it, just like we protect our family and friends.

Remember, Earth is not just a place we live; it’s our home, and we must take care of it with all our hearts. By working together, we can make a big difference and create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.

Thank you for being a part of this special celebration. Now, let’s go out there and be the superheroes that our Earth needs!

Happy World Earth Day!

Earth Day Speech in English

Before going to speak about Earth Day, one must know what Earth Day is? Why is it important to celebrate Earth Day? This article will guide you with the important points that should be included while delivering an Earth Day speech.

Table of Contents

What is earth day and when is it celebrated, why is earth day celebrated, ways to protect our earth, faqs on earth day speech.

In our entire solar system, Earth is the only planet that sustains life. Earth Day is celebrated to protect the Earth from all man-made harm. Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on 22nd April every year. The idea of celebrating Earth Day was suggested by John McConnell (peace activist) at the UNESCO conference in the year 1969. Later, the International Earth Day was declared as 22nd April in 1970. Various countries take oaths in protecting the environment and working towards a sustainable future on this day. On Earth Day in 2016, the famous Paris Agreement was signed among countries like the United Kingdom, United States, China and 120 other countries. Events like the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and many other events that end up polluting the environment were the main reasons behind promoting the idea of Earth Day to save our planet from getting destroyed.

Many might often wonder why we celebrate Earth Day? For that, one has to understand how Earth helps in sustaining life on Earth. In our entire solar system, Earth is the only planet that has the right amenities (air and water) to support life on it. Through ages, Earth has provided us, i.e. mankind, with every kind of resource available to make our life as smooth as possible. Be it fresh drinking water, enough oxygen, proper landform, or proper climate to harbour life, Earth has given us everything we need.

To this present day, humankind has accepted all the resources available, but with time, their needs increased. This led them to use the Earth’s resources without keeping a check on them. In the process of taking away resources available from Mother Earth, we humans are not just drying out the resources but also harming Mother Earth.

The main reason why Earth Day is celebrated worldwide is to promote activities to protect the Earth and its resources. Through Earth Day celebrations, many people and countries take different measures to protect the resources of the Earth and work towards a more sustainable way of life. It is due to the selfish needs of human beings that Mother Earth is facing various environmental issues.

Protecting Mother Earth should be our foremost duty. If we don’t protect our planet, then after some years, all the resources that we get from Earth will be exhausted. So while we still have time, we must take proper and effective measures to make sure that our future generations can also use these resources. Let’s have a look at all the actions we can take to protect our planet.

  • The first way by which we can preserve our resources is by utilising less land for cultivation. Large areas of forest are cleared every year to make space for cultivation. We should try to grow crops that require less area, and this can be done through the crop rotation technique.
  • Instead of using non-renewable energies, We should focus on renewable resources like solar energy, wind energy, hydropower etc.
  • We should plant more trees and maintain a proper balance between human beings and nature.

Though days like the Earth Day and Environment Day are celebrated every year, it is important to realise that you do not need a set date to take some actions to preserve the planet’s resources and conserve the environment. This is the only way to ensure that our future generations can also get to live a good life on the planet.

When is Earth Day celebrated worldwide?

Earth Day is celebrated all over the world on 22nd April every year.

Why is Earth Day celebrated?

Earth Day is celebrated to promote activities to protect the environment and save Mother Earth from all the harmful effects caused by human activities.

Speech on Earth Day

‘Good morning, respected teachers and fellow students. Today, I stand before you to present my ‘Speech on Earth Day.’ Earth Day is a global event celebrated on 22 April every year. Earth Day is crucial for all of us, as it reminds us of the importance of saving Earth’s limited resources for future generations. In addition, Earth Day celebrates the efforts and accomplishments of environmentalists to protect the environment.

speech on our good earth

‘Leo Tolstoy once said, ‘One of the first conditions of happiness is the link between man and nature shall not be broken.’ Globally, several environmental movements have been launched to save earth from the harmful human activities. In India, too environmental movements like the ‘Chipko Movement, ‘Narmada Bachao Andolan,’ ‘Jungle Bachao Movement’, etc. have highlighted the importance of Earth’s natural resources.’

‘In 2023, the Earth Day theme was ‘Invest in Our Planet’ . This theme was meant to encourage businesses to shift their focus towards sustainable practices. For Earth Day 2024, EARTHDAY.ORG has launched a movement called ‘Planet vs Plastics’ . The objective of this movement is to eliminate plastic use for the sake of our planet’s health. The initial target is to reduce plastic usage by 60% in all sectors by 2040. ‘

‘With the new approach to saving the earth, EARTHDAY.ORG plans to unite governments, organisations, intellectuals, students, and NGOs to call for an end to plastics for the sake of the planet and humanity. Every year, plastic production increases to more than 380 million tons. The demand to eliminate plastic from our environment will help build a plastic-free society for future generations.’

‘Kathleen Rogers, the President of the EARTHDAY.ORG, quoted, ‘The Planet vs. Plastics campaign is a call to arms, a demand that we act now to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet.’

‘Our environment’s safety is our responsibility. Plastic was once an amazing product when it was produced in limited quantity. Now this useful product has become something else. It is harming our health, deteriorating our resources, polluting our water, and damaging the environment.’

‘So on this Earth Day, let’s all unite as one and fight against plastic. Only if we act now, we can save our planet from this harmful product. Thank you.’

Speech On Save Earth Save Life - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

  • Speech on Save Earth Save Life -

Earth is the only known planet in the universe that has life. The earth has provided various natural resources for the existence of life. By utilizing these resources, all living things can survive. "Save Earth" is an advertising campaign that shows the importance of Mother Earth. It teaches us how saving the planet can help not only humans but also other creatures.

Speech On Save Earth Save Life - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Earth is our only home, and we should do everything to protect it.

Climate change and other environmental problems threaten all life on the planet.

Deforestation and pollution are leading to the loss of biodiversity, which is essential for the survival of all species.

The actions we take today will determine the fate of the Earth for generations to come.

Simple changes such as reducing our carbon footprint, conserving energy, and recycling can significantly impact us.

Protecting natural habitats and wildlife is crucial for maintaining the ecosystem's delicate balance.

We must work together as a society to address the issues endangering our planet.

Governments, corporations, and individuals all have a vital role to play in protecting the environment.

Investing in clean energy, such as solar and wind power, is essential to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

It's always possible to start making a difference. Let's work together to save the Earth and secure a bright future for all life.

A warm welcome to everyone. Today I will be talking about the importance of saving the earth.

Earth: Most Precious

The earth is the most precious thing in this universe; it has oxygen and water, which are essential for life. The earth's natural resources are being depleted day by day due to various wrong practices of people. Due to the lack of a favorable environment, different forest animals have become extinct. The incidence of various types of pollution, global warming, and other environmental problems is increasing day by day. It is very necessary to stop all bad practices to reduce the negative impact of the same. Earth Day on April 22 every year is celebrated to raise awareness of people all over the world. Every year it is observed how much people care about the earth's natural environment.

Our earth gets nothing in return from us but demands to receive it for the continuation of healthy life on earth. We are not alone on earth. Many unknown creatures inhabit the earth. So we should not be selfish and think of all life on earth. We must reduce the amount of waste, plastic, paper, wood, etc., to protect the earth and the environment. To reduce waste, we should develop habits of reusing and recycling things.

A warm welcome to everyone present here. Today, in my speech, I would like to tell you about the topic "save earth, save life" . To save life on this earth, you must first save the world.

Earth and its Resources

The earth and its resources make life possible. It is impossible to imagine our life without these resources. Life cannot function without the sun, air, plants, and water. But if we don't save the planet now, this will soon become our reality. The resources that the earth gives us are limited. Those are countless blessings. Humans have become selfish and are rapidly exploiting the Earth's resources. We must protect them to save our lives. This is because humans and all living things depend on the earth for survival.

Destruction of Earth’s Resources

Development is progressing rapidly, making people's lives more convenient. But that doesn't give humans the power to corrupt the Earth. Waste is dumped into rivers and other bodies of water, affecting aquatic life. Technology has also improved, and the radiation levels in the air are so high that they affect birds. Some migratory birds forget their way. Trees are cut down, and forests are restricted, making it difficult for wildlife and birds to survive.

Initiatives to be Taken

If we don't protect nature now, only we and future generations will suffer. Our survival is impossible. By destroying nature, we influence our lives. Development is important in today's world, but nature is much more important. Evolutionary logic does not exist if people do not live to use it. We all must participate in volunteer activities to maintain a clean and green environment in our communities. We should recycle without throwing garbage away. We should not forget to schedule regular maintenance for your car.

We must Encourage people to avoid using polyethene and other plastic products. We must bring a cloth bag when we go to the grocery store. We must make it a point to encourage others to save water themselves. Although it is our responsibility to protect the earth we live on, we tend to be selfish and do things that further pollute the environment.

As we are the most evolved species in the environment, it must be understood that Earth is the only planet that supports life. So if Earth is in danger, moving to another planet for safety is not an option. So it's important to use what we have sustainably. Our approach not only saves the planet, but it also saves our lives. Moreover, our future generations will be given a healthy living environment.

Now is the time. It is not logical to take nature for granted. The health of our planet depends significantly on the small actions of humans. If possible, we must take a walk to the neighborhood market. We should carpool with a friend or colleague to get to work. We must be kind to all living things. Most importantly, plant at least one tree daily. If we do not save mother earth, we will all be in great pain.

5 reasons why you should love Earth

Get the dirt on our planet and what makes it so awesome.

The planet is one big party.

Earth is the only planet in our galaxy that can support life. Scientists estimate that Earth is home to about 300,000 plant species, over 600,000 species of fungi, and about ten million animal species. Guess you could say we’re the life of the party.

Earth has a superpower—it sports an invisible shield.

Earth is surrounded by a cloud of gas called the plasmasphere. This cloud interacts with rings of particles that also surround the planet to create an invisible shield. The “armor” deflects superfast electrons that zip through space and could harm Earth if they were able to enter the atmosphere.

This planet is into recycling.

The ground you walk on is recycled. It starts off as sizzling-hot magma deep within the planet’s core. This is pushed up to the surface, where it cools and becomes hard rock. Winds erode the rock , shaving off tiny fragments that get buried back into the earth, where they’re reheated into magma. Then the cycle starts again. Good to know Earth is so green.

Earth is in the perfect position.

Earth spins around a tilted axis, or an imaginary line that runs through the planet from the South Pole to the North Pole . If the planet were angled any differently, or if Earth were even just a little closer to or farther from the sun, temperatures would shift drastically. And that would make life here impossible.

Our planet is a mystery.

About 95 percent of the Earth’s oceans (which make up more than 70 percent of the planet) remain unexplored. Scientists estimate almost a million undiscovered species could live in these unseen seas. Some lands, like parts of the rain forests in New Guinea, are also uncharted. This means that many things on Earth have yet to be discovered.

10 reasons we should celebrate our planet.

We believe that celebrating earth month is extremely important.

We believe that celebrating earth month is extremely important. Here are 10 reasons why we should celebrate our earth:

Its natural beauty

First and foremost, the planet we live on is incredibly beautiful — and we should consider ourselves quite lucky to have the chance to experience it with all of our five senses.

It’s filled with life and incredible diversity

Being on this earth gives us the opportunity to meet and interact with a wide range of living things, from  rainbow trees , to tropical fish, to lemurs, to elephants. This earth is filled with millions of species that have their own little worlds, which makes it pretty impossible to get bored here. It’s all about taking charge and experiencing as much of it as you can!

It gives us peace of mind

Spending time in nature, connecting with the earth, is one of the most rejuvenating and peaceful experiences we can have. If you listen hard enough, the earth has a lot of secrets about life, health, and happiness that it can bestow upon you.

It is our home

We literally would not be here if it wasn’t for this amazing planet. It provides us with oxygen to breathe, water to drink, and food to eat. Our reliance on the earth also means that we’re always connected and one with the earth; remembering that we’re dependent on the simple things like air, water, and soil can be very grounding.

It gives us all we need

The earth knows how to take care of its living things, if only we look hard enough. And yes, all of our fashionable clothing items are in some way from the earth. That’s why tentree knows that we should give back to the earth by planting trees, in return for everything it gives us. We’re responsible for that.

It gives us perspective of what’s really important

Technology, fast-paced city life, and desk jobs can all fog our vision as to what’s really important in life. The things that matter are really quite simple — like happiness, friendships, good health and good character. Being out in nature reminds us that we should be grateful for the little positive things that enrich our lives.

The oceans are amazing

Most of the earth is made up of oceans that are home to millions of amazing sea creatures, tropical islands, and deep-sea mysteries. And the tiny parts that we can enjoy — along beaches, while swimming or boating or surfing — are the earth’s paradises.

It gives us a great view of the galaxy

The earth is the perfect spot for star-gazing and for viewing the Milky Way! Doing this will remind you of your smallness, but also provide you with appreciation for this life-giving, oxygen-providing, beautiful planet earth.

It keeps us healthy

Spending time connecting with the earth reduces your chances of developing chronic diseases, being depressed, or being overweight. In other words, the earth not only allows us to survive — but it helps us blossom and live healthy lives.

Most importantly, there’s no other place for us to live!

The earth helps us be grateful for the things we have. At the end of the day, the only things you’ll reflect on with happiness will be the relationships you’ve nourished as well as the experiences you’ve had exploring the globe and bridging differences among people. While in some distant galaxy there may be a planet similar to our earth, there likely isn’t any just exactly like ours. That’s reason enough to celebrate it, and to protect its purity and beauty.

Child planting a plant in a plastic bottle as a pot.

Secretary-General's message 2024

Humanity is acting like Mother Earth’s delinquent child.

We depend on nature for the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. Yet, we have brought chaos to the natural world: poisoning our planet with pollution, wiping out species and ecosystems with abandon, and destabilising our climate with greenhouse gas emissions.

These actions harm nature, and they harm humanity. We are imperilling food production, polluting our ocean and air, creating a more dangerous, less stable environment, and holding back sustainable development.

Together, we must restore harmony with nature, embrace sustainable production and consumption, and protect ourselves from harm – creating jobs, reducing poverty and driving sustainable development as we do so.

That means slamming the brakes on biodiversity loss, putting a stop to pollution, and slashing greenhouse gas emissions globally. It means supporting Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and others being hit hardest by the pollution, climate and biodiversity crises. It means delivering climate justice to countries on the frontline of climate chaos, and swiftly mobilising the finance and support countries need to act on climate, protect nature and promote sustainable development.

Countries must produce new national climate plans that align with limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. These can double as national transition plans and national investment plans, underpinning sustainable development for generations to come. And the G20 must lead a fast, fair and funded global phaseout of fossil fuels, and put a stop to nature-wrecking subsidies, such as those that underwrite runaway production of planet-choking plastics.

Repairing relations with Mother Earth is the mother of all of humanity’s challenges. We must act – and act now – to create a better future for us all.

Repairing relations with Mother Earth is the mother of all of humanity’s challenges. We must act – and act now – to create a better future for us all.” António Guterres

Speech on Earth

Welcome to the fascinating world of Earth, our home planet. You might know it as the blue sphere, teeming with life, spinning in the vast expanse of space.

Earth is unique, filled with diverse landscapes, climates, and species. It’s a place of mystery and wonder, waiting for you to explore.

1-minute Speech on Earth

Good Morning to everyone present here. Today, I am here to deliver a speech on the topic ‘Earth’. The Earth, our beautiful blue planet, is the only known celestial body to support life. It’s the third planet from the sun and the fifth-largest planet in our solar system.

Our Earth provides us with everything we need for survival, such as air, water, food, and shelter. It’s a treasure trove of natural resources that are essential for our survival and well-being. The lush green forests act as the Earth’s lungs, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. The oceans, rivers, and lakes quench our thirst and are vital for various human activities.

However, in recent years, human activities have adversely impacted our planet. Through mindless exploitation of resources, we are causing harm to the Earth’s ecosystems. Pollution, deforestation, and global warming are major concerns that need immediate attention.

Thank you for lending me your ears. Let’s make every day Earth Day.

2-minute Speech on Earth

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I stand before you today to talk about a subject that is close to all of us, our home, the Earth. The blue planet that we all share and cherish, a wonderful place of immense beauty.

But our Earth is more than just a physical entity. It is the very foundation of human existence. It has nurtured civilizations, witnessed the rise and fall of empires, and has been a constant guide for explorers and travelers. Our planet’s diverse climates, landscapes, and ecosystems have shaped cultures, traditions, lifestyles, and diets. Our literature, art, and science are deeply influenced by the natural world around us.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the rich biodiversity our Earth supports. Rainforests with their dense vegetation, the serene beauty of coral reefs, the icy landscapes of the polar regions, the deserts with their unique adaptability, and the myriad of life forms that each of these ecosystems support are all part of this incredible biodiversity. This diversity is not just for us to admire, but it is crucial for the survival and health of our planet.

However, this beautiful planet is under threat. Pollution, global warming, deforestation, and a host of other problems caused by human activities are pushing our Earth to its limits. We have exploited Earth’s resources, disrupted its ecosystems, and are now facing the consequences. Rising temperatures, melting ice caps, frequent wildfires, and loss of biodiversity are just a few of the alarming signs.

So, what can we do to protect and preserve our Earth? Just as the problems have been caused by our actions, it is our actions that can make a difference. We can start by reducing our waste, recycling more, and limiting our use of plastic. We can conserve water, use renewable energy, and plant more trees. We can educate ourselves and others about the importance of sustainable living and the consequences of our actions on the environment.

Earth Day at 50: Five Ways to Honor the Legacy and Change the World

A time of crisis is not just a time of anxiety and worry. It gives a chance, an opportunity, to choose well or to choose badly. —Desmond Tutu

Fifty years ago, 20 million Americans (10% of the U.S. population at the time) took to the streets at the first Earth Day to demand a better future. Outraged by polluted air and water, by oil spills and the destruction of nature, these people's actions changed policies and politics, and sparked the emergence of the modern environmental movement. Within months, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was created and the Clean Air Act was passed into law with bipartisan support.

Half a century later, we are not celebrating this anniversary the way we expected to. The year 2020 was supposed to be a critical one to make progress on climate, biodiversity and the ocean, anchored by large, international summits. We looked forward to this Earth Day as an opportunity for citizens from every country to rise up, celebrate nature and demand change. We envisioned marches, rousing speeches, teach-ins, music and colorful outfits.

Instead, most of us are confined to our homes as the world suffers through the worst health and economic crisis in a century. We are living through a human tragedy, especially for those who are sick or have lost loved ones, as well as for the millions who have lost their jobs and are suffering financially.

How then should we celebrate the 50th Earth Day? What are the goals we should fight for? Here are five imperatives that we at World Resources Institute are working toward.

First, Put People First

Crises don't affect all people equally, as tragically illustrated by the current pandemic. It is the poor and vulnerable that are least protected in terms of health and economic ramifications. So, too, with environmental damage. Climate change may thrust 100 million people into poverty, and 3 billion people already do not have adequate water. We must demand people-centric environmentalism, with a special emphasis for the most vulnerable. The same applies to the solutions for the problems we face. The scale of change needed is massive, and this change will be disruptive. The environmental community must focus much more on how to ensure a just and inclusive transition, and mitigate the negative impacts on workers who are most at risk.

It's not just a transition. It must be a just transition .

Second, Build Back Better

As leaders look to reboot their struggling economies, it is critical that we don't return to the same old ways of doing business. The coming 18 months will see the largest public spending programs in the history of the world — probably between $10 and 20 trillion. What a tragedy it would be if this money simply built back the same unequal, risky, high-carbon ways of the past. A survey this week in the UK found that 91% of the population does not wish to revert to "normal," but rather desire something better. As these trillions are disbursed, governments should focus on fairness and building the economy of the future, not of the past. After the 2009-2010 economic crisis South Korea was one of the countries that recovered the quickest. It also invested the biggest portion of its stimulus (about 69%) in low-carbon, climate-friendly measures. In the United States, the 2009 American Recovery and Investment Act led to the largest clean energy investment in U.S. history, and created 900,000 job-years in clean energy between 2009 to 2015.

It's not just about restarting the economy, but resetting it.

Third, Bury the Economics of Yesterday

Old fashioned politicians will tell you it costs too much to address climate change. That's last century's economics. Modern economists have shown that smart policies and investments can make the economy more efficient, promote new technologies, reduce risks, create more and better jobs, and unlock economic growth. The New Climate Economy has shown that smart climate action can yield $26 trillion by 2030 , starting immediately, and create 65 million new jobs and avoid 700,000 premature deaths in 2030. Renewable energy often creates many times the number of jobs that the fossil fuel industry does. Investments in energy efficiency and landscape restoration have fabulous rates of return. And designing cities for people rather than automobiles would save $3 trillion .

Beware of old fashioned economics, but embrace the smart, modern version!

Fourth, Rethink the Future

The current crisis reminds us that we are more vulnerable than we thought, that we face risks greater than we understood, and that we are not prepared to deal with them. Traditional planning assumes that the future is captured in straight lines and smooth curves, and is best understood as a continuation of past trends. This is foolishness in today's world. We need to understand that we are in uncharted territory, and learn from those such as small island states who have learned how to plan for an unpredictable and dangerous future. We need to look to the best science and understand that reducing and adapting to risk is much more important than in the past. Science tells us that, in light of feedback loops that we don't fully understand, the risks we face are truly existential. A half-hearted response is inexcusable.

Stop planning to maximize expected growth. Start planning to reduce risk and maximize resilience .

Fifth, Embrace International Cooperation

Global problems require global solutions. Sadly, we are not living in a cooperative world right now. For a brief period in 2015, we had a moment of true global, collective action when the world's nations agreed to the Sustainable Development Goals and the historic Paris Agreement on climate change. But this spirit quickly evaporated as "me first" nationalism re-emerged. Especially heartbreaking is the way in which this failure to cooperate hurts everybody. The belief that global cooperation is a zero-sum game is wrong in every sense. Countries that seek to advance the global common good will thrive. Some governments are stepping up to do the right thing. So too are many leading corporations and NGOs. We need to support the numerous multi-stakeholder coalitions fighting for change. In the absence of successful universal inter-governmental processes, we must try plurilateral approaches. Delays of the UN Convention on Biodiversity summit and the global climate summit (COP26) give us the chance to get it right. Two-thirds of Americans believe the government isn't doing enough to address climate change. We must demand more.

Don't accept a "Prisoners' Dilemma" world. Act for the global good .

A New Earth Day Commitment

History teaches us that crises can either bring people together or push us apart. We have seen remarkable acts of selflessness and community in the present pandemic, giving us a great sense of hope. It is even possible that this tragic period could open the door for important change. We may be able to make something good out of this crisis by resetting the social contract between citizens, governments and corporations — toward one founded on a new commitment to support the vulnerable, protect our natural systems, reduce risks and address our common threats together.

On Earth Day lets recommit to achieve such a reset.

Save Environment Speech For Students

Speech on Save Environment is an important topic for students. Students can avail a well-written speech on the topic ‘save environment speech’ and learn how to write the speech that will impress the audience.

Long Speech

Good morning to one and all present here. I am glad to be given the opportunity to present a speech on Save Environment. Our environment is where we live. There must be harmony between the environment and living beings. In the present scenario, due to overpopulation, the environment is under distress. The situation is alarming as our natural environment is overexploited to meet human needs. It is because of many human activities that we are not able to maintain a healthy balance with nature.

The threat we are facing includes manmade disasters and global warming. These threats are real and have raised an alarming situation. We need to come together to save our environment. This speech on saving nature throws light on why it is needed by mankind to protect and preserve the environment. Our environment offers everything from clothing, water, food to shelter. All living beings are a part of the ecosystem. Hence, it becomes our responsibility to take care of the natural habitat.

Environmental pollution is one of the biggest issues that the modern world faces today. To meet the wants of society, we are putting too much pressure on the natural environment. This leads to damage to nature. The soil is losing its fertility, and in most places, soil pollution makes it difficult to grow crops. Even air and water pollution is the effect of mass urbanization and industrialisation. Controlling the pollution is a need of the hour, however, this still gets neglected by us. I am delivering the speech to save the earth to make you aware of what can be done by each one of us sitting here. We can make our earth a better place to live by taking simple steps like planting a tree, throwing waste in proper bins, saying no to plastic bags, etc. Rather than complaining about pollution, such small steps must be taken to make our environment sustainable.

Environmental problems are also the result of vast technological advancements in the last few years. The overuse of resources to build IT infrastructure is responsible for the loss of the natural environment. Government and international organizations must take proper steps to control pollution and save our mother earth. Environmental protection policies must be strictly enforced. Everyone has to come together to save our mother nature.

Saving our environment is much more important today than ever before. The degrading quality of earth life is what we all are familiar with. However, the early signs of the upcoming destruction are visible. The harsh weather conditions, increased carbon dioxide emissions, melting of glaciers, etc. are the major concerns that needed immediate attention. Let us all do what we can to save our environment and preserve our resources for future generations.

Short Speech

Good morning to all. Today, I am going to give a short speech on saving the environment. We are all aware of how the environment is important to us. We cannot afford to harm the environment any longer. In today’s modern world, our planet earth is affected significantly. However, if we want to live in harmony with nature, we cannot put the entire pressure on the environment. Living beings, for their survival, depend completely on the natural and manmade environment. It is impossible to live without the resources that the atmosphere provides. In such a situation, it becomes critical to save mother nature from getting over-exploited due to the increasing population.

We all know that factors like overpopulation, deforestation, etc. are responsible for environmental destruction. Small steps taken by us can go a long way. We must try to use as much public transport as possible to protect the air we breathe. We must throw garbage in the right bins so that proper disposal of waste and waste management can be done. We need to make efforts in the right direction to conserve our natural resources and habitat. Some of the ways by which we can achieve this are to use renewable energy, avoid plastic bags, plant more trees etc.

Mother nature offers so much to us. We must protect the environment and nature and be a part of sustainable development programmes.

10 Lines Speech

A heartfelt welcome to each one present here. I am here to deliver a speech on saving the environment and saving a life. It is no hidden fact that our environment is affected largely due to human activities. It is facing a threat at an alarming rate. We have over-exploited nature due to our greed. This has caused a natural imbalance. However, we can still do something and protect our environment from all the damages. We must plant more and more trees, throw garbage in the dustbins, avoid using plastic bags, etc. It cannot be denied that our natural environment is such an important part of our ecosystem. It is important to educate people about how the environment is getting damaged. Then only we can have green earth to live in.

Main Causes of Environmental Degradation

Pollution, in any form, is destructive to the environment, whether it be in the form of air, water, land, or noise.

Rapid population increase limits natural resources, resulting in environmental degradation.

Increasing population equals more need for food, clothing, and housing. More land is needed to grow food and provide housing for people. Deforestation occurs, as a result, contributing to environmental degradation.

Deforestation is also caused by using forest areas for agriculture, livestock grazing, fuelwood harvesting, and logging. When forest size decreases, deforestation contributes to global warming by releasing carbon into the atmosphere.

The exhaust gas released by industries is one of the primary sources of pollution. Lead is found in large concentrations in the environment due to a range of substances such as gasoline, paints, ceramics, and batteries.

In recent years, there has been a massive increase in the number of private vehicles. The higher the number of cars, the higher the rate of pollution that causes smog. Lower-level ozone, which is detrimental, is caused by hydrocarbons emitted by engines.

Speech on plant trees, saving mother earth is important for students as it will make them aware of how to use natural resources and how a healthy balance can be maintained between the environment and human life.

FAQs on Speech on Save Environment

1. What is the best way to prepare a speech?

Giving a speech in class pushes students to step outside of their comfort zone, especially if they are required to take a stand on a social issue. Students gain courage, conviction, and fluency when they learn to face their insecurities and reply articulately to opposition with practice. The following tips will help students in delivering a great speech:

The size of the audience is one of the most primary considerations when giving a speech. High school students should consider the audience and the context for the speech before digging into stacks of research resources.

Students should slim down their attention and write a clear thesis statement that will act as a road map for the rest of the presentation. The speakers should then choose two or three major topics that they can address in the time allocated.

Decide the basic goal of your speech or presentation if you're informing, presenting, or entertaining.

When practising, keep track of your time from beginning to end and read the complete speech numerous times.

It can be beneficial to incorporate hand gestures to explain points in your speech. Hand gestures will not only help you communicate with the audience, but they will also assist you to remember important points.

A few people in the audience will have questions about your speech. Consider some of the products you might receive. Then jot down your responses and practice expressing them aloud.

2. How to create awareness about environmental pollution among people?

You must first ensure that you have a good understanding of environmental-related issues before you can begin promoting environmental consciousness in your community. Do some online research to learn about the root of pollution in your neighbourhood. Share your information with as many people as possible so that they are aware of the effects of pollution and how to avoid them. Creating an environmental group is another way to raise awareness. Various social media platforms can be used as tools to assist you in educating more people. The number of environmental challenges appears to be infinite, and while they are all crucial, it is easy to become overwhelmed. Choose one subject to concentrate on at a time.

3. What are the most important methods to conserve the environment?

Reduce the amount of waste you generate. Conserve natural resources and landfill space by following the three "R's" that are – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Deforestation must be controlled or, ultimately, stopped.

The less water you consume, the less drainage and wastewater end up in the ocean.

Afforestation must be fostered, and public awareness must be promoted.

Energy-efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas release. Also, flip the light switch off when you leave the room.

Fuelwood and timber wood should be used wisely.

In your house and office, use non-toxic materials.

We should maintain grazing lands and produce cover crops to keep soils from blowing away.

Using public transportation, walking, or riding a bike to class are all preferable options that assist the environment, save money, and provide exercise.

4. What is the importance of the environment for Human life?

The environment offers us a variety of producing resources, both renewable and non-renewable. It offers food, shelter, and air, as well as meeting all human needs.

Agriculture and the growing of crops and vegetables are facilitated by the ecosystem. Our waste products were thrown away and composted for use in agriculture.

Human life would not survive without the sun, water, air, and soil that make up the environment. It helps to keep life going by ensuring genetic variation and biodiversity.

Mountains, lakes, rivers, deserts, and a plethora of other amazing natural components are only beautiful because the environment exists.

The environment offers us fertile land, clean water, fresh air, animals, and a variety of other necessities for survival.

Remarks on earth day.

Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, for being here in the wonderful Botanical Gardens. I must say there's a lot I have to learn about this town, as you can tell if you follow events from day to day. And I didn't know that the Botanical Gardens was a branch of the Congress until I showed up here. [Laughter] Just one more thing I'm not responsible for. I'm glad to be here.

I also think that we should introduce a guest from another country who is here with us, the Environmental Minister from Australia, Roz Kelly. Would you stand up? We're glad to have you here.

Al Gore introduced Katie McGinty, and you were all good enough to clap. And I don't know if you could hear through the clapping that her parents are here. And what you may not know is that the real reason we appointed her is that she's one of 10 children, and we'd like to carry Pennsylvania in 1996. [Laughter] We think that there's a significant likelihood now because of that.

I want to say a special word of thanks to the Vice President for two things: first of all, for the wonderful trip that he has just concluded, going to Poland to represent our country on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, and the wonderful remarks he gave in New York on the eve of that departure and the way that he represented the United States in Poland. And secondly, notwithstanding what he said in the introduction, which was true, one of the reasons I did ask him to join the ticket is that he knew more about the subject of the environment than I did, and I thought I had something to learn from him. And I have learned a great deal, and it has been an immensely rewarding experience and one which I hope will benefit the United States in many ways over the course of the next 4 years. That's worth clapping for. I agree with that, Nancy, thank you. [Applause]

It's a good thing to have this celebration in the springtime, a time when our spirits are renewed and we are reminded by nature of new beginnings and forgotten beauty. This has been an astonishingly beautiful spring in Washington, DC, and something for which I will always be grateful, my first springtime here that I see every morning as I go out and jog around in it and try to breath in it, something that is a continuing challenge. [Laughter]

A little more than a week ago, most Americans celebrated holy days of freedom and renewal. Today, we still nurture the faith that helps us to understand more clearly that we can do better. This is a time of new beginnings, a time when there is anguish and anxiety all around us, but we still must yearn once again to succeed in our common purposes to reach our deepest goals.

For all of our differences, I think there is an overwhelming determination to change our course, to offer more opportunity, to assume more responsibility, to restore the larger American community, and to achieve things that are larger than ourselves and more lasting than the present moment. We seek to set our course by the star of age-old values, not short-term expediencies; to waste less in the present and provide more for the future; to leave a legacy that keeps faith with those who left the Earth to us. That is the American spirit. It moves us not only in great gatherings but also when we stand silently all alone in the presence only of nature and our Creator.

If there is one commitment that defines our people, it is our devotion to the rich and expansive land we have inherited. From the first Americans to the present day, our people have lived in awe of the power, the majesty, and the beauty of the forest, the rivers, and the streams of America. That love of the land, which flows like a mighty current through this land and through our character, burst into service on the first Earth Day in 1970.

When I traveled the country last year, I saw and spoke of how much had been accomplished by the environmental movement since then and how much still remains to be done. For all that has been done to protect the air and the water, we haven't halted the destruction of wetlands at home and the rain forest abroad. For all that has been learned, we still struggle to comprehend such dangers to our planet's delicate environment as the shroud of greenhouse gases and the dangerous thinning of the ozone layer. We haven't done nearly enough to protect our forest communities from the hazards, such as lead poisoning, which is believed to cause mental retardation, learning disabilities, and impaired growth.

Unless we act and act now, we face a future where our planet will be home to 9 billion people within our lifetime, but its capacity to support and sustain our lives will be very much diminished. Unless we act, we face the extinction of untold numbers of species that might support our livelihoods and provide medication to save our very lives. Unless we act now, we face a future in which the sun may scorch us, not warm us; where the change of season may take on a dreadful new meaning; and where our children's children will inherit a planet far less hospitable than the world in which we came of age. I have a faith that we will act, not from fear but from hope and through vision.

All across this country, there is a deep understanding rooted in our religious heritage and renewed in the spirit of this time that the bounty of nature is not ours to waste. It is a gift from God that we hold in trust for future generations. Preserving our heritage, enhancing it, and passing it along is a great purpose worthy of a great people. If we seize the opportunity and shoulder the responsibility, we can enrich the future and ennoble our own lives.

Just as we yearn to come together as a people, we yearn to move beyond the false choices that the last few years have imposed upon us. For too long we have been told that we have to choose between the economy and the environment, between our jobs, between our obligations to our own people and our responsibilities to the future and to the rest of the world, between public action and private economy.

I am here today in the hope that we can together take a different course of action, to offer a new set of challenges to our people. Our environmental program is based on three principles.

First, we think you can't have a healthy economy without a healthy environment. We need not choose between breathing clean air and bringing home secure paychecks. The fact is, our environmental problems result not from robust growth but from reckless growth. The fact is that only a prosperous society can have the confidence and the means to protect its environment. And the fact is healthy communities and environmentally sound products and services do best in today's economic competition. That's why our policies must protect our environment, promote economic growth, and provide millions of new high-skill, high-wage jobs.

Second, we want to protect the environment at home and abroad. In an era of global economics, global epidemics, and global environmental hazards, a central challenge of our time is to promote our national interest in the context of its connectedness with the rest of the world. We share our atmosphere, our planet, our destiny with all the peoples of this world. And the policies I outline today will protect all of us because that is the only way we can protect any of us.

And third, we must move beyond the antagonisms among business, Government, and individual citizens. The policies I outlined today are part of our effort to reinvent Government, to make it your partner and not your overseer, to lead by example and not by bureaucratic fiat.

In the face of great challenges, we need a Government that not only guards against the worst in us but helps to bring out the best in us. I know we can do this because our administration includes the best team of environmental policy makers who have ever served the United States: the Vice President, Interior Secretary Babbitt, EPA Administrator Browner—and I hope that the EPA will soon, by the grace of Congress, be a Cabinet-level Department—and Energy Secretary O'Leary, Commerce Secretary Brown, Transportation Secretary Pena, the Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy, our Environmental Policy Director Katie McGinty, and our Science and Technology Adviser Jack Gibbons. All of them share an unshakable commitment to a healthy environment, a growing economy, and a responsive Government.

Our economic plan will create new job opportunities and new business opportunities, protecting our natural environment. The reductions in the interest rates which we have seen already will free up tens of billions of dollars for responsible investments in this year alone.

The jobs package I have asked the Congress to pass contains—this has hardly been noticed, but it actually contains green jobs from waste water treatment to energy efficiency, to the restoration of our national parks, to investments in new technologies designed to create the means by which we can solve the problems of the future and create more jobs for Americans. Our long-term strategy invests more in pollution prevention, energy efficiency, in solar energy, in renewable energy, and environmental restoration, and water treatment, all of which can be found in the 5-year budget that we have presented to the Congress.

These investments will create tens of thousands of new jobs, and they will save tens of thousands more. Because when we save energy and resources, we will have more to invest in creating new jobs and providing better living standards. Today every other advanced nation is more energy efficient than we are. That is one of the reasons why over the last couple of years, for example, the average German factory worker has come to make over 20 percent more than his American counterpart; that German workers, while having higher wages, also have more secure and better health care. That's because that economy uses one-half the energy we do to produce the same amount of goods. We can do better, and we will.

I believe we can develop the know-how to out-conserve and out-compete anyone else on Earth. All over the world, people are buying. products that help them to protect their environment. There's a $200 billion market today for environmental technologies, and by the turn of the decade and the century, it will be $300 billion.

Let me just share one example with you. Something we all know and use and something some of us are still trying to learn how to replace: light bulbs. Long-lasting, energy-saving light bulbs didn't even exist in 1985. Now American companies sell over $500 million worth of these products, with sales expected to reach $2 billion by 1995 and $10 billion by the year 2000, creating thousands of new jobs. American scientists have taken the lead in developing these technologies, and it's time to help our companies take the lead in bringing our products and services to market.

I've asked the Energy Department, the Commerce Department, and the EPA to assess current environmental technologies and create a strategic plan to give our companies the trade development, promotional efforts, and technical assistance they need to turn these advances into jobs here in America, as well as to help promote a better environment. America can maintain our lead in the world economy by taking the lead to preserve the world environment.

Last year, the nations of the world came together at the Earth Summit in Rio to try to find a way to protect the miraculous diversity of plant and animal life all across the planet. The biodiversity treaty which resulted had some flaws, and we all knew that. But instead of fixing them, the United States walked away from the treaty. That left us out of a treaty that is critically important not only to our future but to the future of the world, and not only because of what it will do to preserve species but because of opportunities it offers for cutting-edge companies whose research creates new medicines, new products, and new jobs.

Again, just one recent example makes the point. A tree that was thought to have no value, the Pacific Yew, used to be bulldozed and burned. Now we know that that tree contains one of our most promising potential cures for ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and other forms of cancer. We cannot walk away from challenges like those presented by the biodiversity treaty. We must step up to them.

Our administration has worked with business and environmental groups toward an agreement that protects both American interests and the world environment. And today, I am proud to announce the United States' intention to sign the biodiversity treaty.

This is an example of what you can do by bringing business and environmentalists together, instead of pitting them against each other. We can move forward to protect critical natural resources and critical technologies. I'm also directing the State Department to move ahead with our talks with other countries which have signed the convention so that the United States can move as quickly as possible toward ratification.

To learn more about where we stand in protecting all our biological resources here at home, I'm asking the Interior Department to create a national biological survey to help us protect endangered species and, just as importantly, to help the agricultural and biotechnical industries of our country identify new sources of food, fiber, and medication.

We also must take the lead in addressing the challenge of global warming that could make our planet and its climate less hospitable and more hostile to human life. Today, I reaffirm my personal and announce our Nation's commitment to reducing our emissions of greenhouse gases to their 1990 levels by the year 2000.

I am instructing my administration to produce a cost-effective plan by August that can continue the trend of reduced emission. This must be a clarion call, not for more bureaucracy or regulation or unnecessary costs but, instead, for American ingenuity and creativity, to produce the best and most energy-efficient technology.

After the cold war, we face the challenge of helping Russia achieve a healthy democracy, a healthy economy, and a healthy environment. Our Russian aid package includes $38 million to clean up pollution and promote better uses of energy. As with the full range of our investments in Russia, this is truly an investment not only in promoting our own values but in protecting our national security. To protect the environment at home and abroad, I am committed to a Government that leads by example, brings people together, and brings out the best in everyone. For too long our Government did more to inflame environmental issues than to solve them. Different Agencies pursued conflicting policies. National leaders polarized people. And problems wound up in the courts or in the streets instead of being solved.

We seek to bring a new spirit to these difficult issues. Three weeks ago in Portland, Oregon, we brought together business people, timber workers, and environmentalists from throughout the Northwest to discuss how best to preserve jobs and to protect the old-growth forests and the species which inhabit them. People sat down in a conference room, not a court room, and in the words of Archbishop Thomas Murphy of Seattle, we tried to find common ground for a common good. At the close of that forest conference, I asked my Cabinet and our entire administration to begin work immediately to craft a balanced, comprehensive long-term policy that is also comprehensible.

Before I ask our companies and our communities and our families to meet any challenge, it seems to me we have to set that standard for the Government. The American people are entitled to know where the United States stands on this issue and many other issues. And it is time to bring an end to the time when issues like this wind up in court and there are five different positions from the United States Government itself. We can never solve problems in that fashion. We can only undermine the security and stability of people's lives.

That's one reason I am proud that yesterday the United States Army announced its plan to clean up a large number of sites where we learned recently that chemical weapons materials may be buried, in some places from as long ago as World War I. Working with the EPA, the Army will clean up this problem safely and in an environmentally sound manner.

This is a legacy of America's efforts to defend our people and the community of free nations. Now, we are taking steps to defend our people and our environment and the environment of the world. In that same spirit, I plan to sign an Executive order requiring Federal facilities that manufacture, process, or use toxic chemicals, to comply with the Federal right-to-know laws and publicly report what they are doing.

I might add that it is time that the United States Government begins to live under the laws it makes for other people. With this Executive order, I ask all Federal facilities to set a voluntary goal to reducing their release of toxic pollutants by 50 percent by 1999. This will reduce toxic releases, control costs associated with cleanups, and promote clean technologies. And it will help make our Government what it should be, a positive example for the rest of the country.

Poor neighborhoods in our cities stiffer most often from toxic pollution. Cleaning up the toxic wastes will create new jobs in these neighborhoods for those people and make them safer places to live, to work, and to do business.

Today I am also signing an Executive order that directs Federal agencies to make preliminary changes in their purchasing policies, to use fewer substances harmful to the ozone layer. Here, too, we must put our actions where our values are. Our Government is a leading purchaser of goods and services. And it's time to stop not only the waste of taxpayers' money but the waste of our natural resources.

Today I am signing an Executive order which commits the Federal Government to buy thousands more American made vehicles, using clean, domestic fuels such as natural gas, ethanol, methanol, and electric power. This will reduce our demand for foreign oil, reduce air pollution, promote promising technologies, promote American companies, create American jobs, and save American tax dollars. To demonstrate my commitment to this issue, Energy Secretary O'Leary is creating a task force led by the land commissioner of Texas, Garry Mauro, who is here in the audience today, who has headed a successful effort in his own State. I hope we can do as well in America as they have done in Texas.

In that same spirit, I plan to sign an Executive order committing every agency of the National Government to do more than ever to buy and use recycled products. This will provide a market for new technologies, make better use of recycled materials, and encourage the creation of new products that can be offered to the Government, to private companies, and to consumers. And again, it will create jobs through the recycling process.

We must keep finding new ways to be a force for positive change. For example, the Federal Government is the largest purchaser of computer equipment in the world, and computers are the fastest growing area of electricity use. That's why I am also signing an Executive order today requiring the Federal Government to purchase energy-efficient computers. We're going to expand the market for a technology where America pioneered and still leads the world, and we'll save energy, saving the taxpayers $40 million a year, and set an example for our country and for the world.

For as long as I live and work in The White House, I want Americans to see it not only as a symbol of clean Government but also a clean environment. That's why I'm announcing an energy and environmental audit of the White House. We're going to identify what it takes to make the White House a model for efficiency and waste reduction. It might mean fewer memos and less paper. [Laughter] And then we're going to get the job done. I want to make the White House a model for other Federal agencies, for State and local governments, for business, and for families in their homes. Before I ask you to do the best you can in your house, I ought to make sure I'm doing the best I can in my house.

I ask that all of us today reaffirm our willingness to assume responsibility for our common environment and to do it willingly, hopefully, and joyously. We are challenged here today not so much to sacrifice as to celebrate and create. I've challenged Americans who are young in years or young in spirit to offer their time and their talent to serve their communities and their country. I've asked them to help in teaching our children, healing the sick, policing our streets. But equally important are efforts to protect our environment, from our largest cities to our smallest towns to our suburbs. Our national service plan will ask thousands of Americans to do their part, from leading recycling drives to preventing lead poisoning.

The challenge to shoulder responsibility and seize opportunity extends to each of us in businesses, communities, and homes. In our own lives, in our own ways, each of us has something to offer to the work of cleaning up America's environment. And each of us surely has something very personal to gain.

On a colder day in the middle of winter, just 3 months ago, a poet asked us to celebrate not only the marvelous diversity of our people but the miraculous bounty of our land. "Here on the pulse of this new day," Maya Angelou challenged us to look at "the rock, the river, the tree, your country." Now, it is a season of new hope and new beginnings. And as we look anew at our neighbors, our children, and our own communities, as well as the world around us, we must seize the possibilities inherent in this exhilarating moment, to face our challenges, to exercise our responsibilities, and to rejoice in them.

Thank you very much.

NOTE: The President spoke at 11:50 a.m. at the U.S.. Botanic Gardens. The Executive orders of April 21 on ozone-depleting substances, alternative fueled vehicles, and energy efficient computer equipment are listed in Appendix D at the end of this volume. Later in the year, the President signed Executive orders on compliance with right-to-know laws (August 3, 58 FR 41981) and recycling (October 20, 58 FR 54911).

6 additional persuasive environmental speech topics

Persuasive environmental speech topics to increase the quality of your persuasive communication skills, detailed layouts on Natural Resources, Radio Active Waste Management, and Intensive Farming  are even applicable on essay writing goals.

Can We Write Your Speech?

Get your audience blown away with help from a professional speechwriter. Free proofreading and copy-editing included.

Examine the opportunities I offer, and assemble you own speaking text based on the sample series of reasons below.

That logic reasoning process in the end will result in a nice and substantial blueprint, and a sample argumentation scheme for a debate on good persuasive environmental speech topics.

Excessive Use of Natural Resources Leads to Depletion In The End.

I. Industrial development destroys the environment by left over and residue materials such as: a. High concentrations of metals;

b. Toxic substances and chemically changed minerals;

c. Debris and litter;

d. Radioactive infected ground at industrial sites.

II. Large-scale soil erosion because surface soil washes away due to influencing water tides and winds streams. a. Intensive plowing and draining of farm land.

b. Planting of genetically singular crops in combination with applying too much fertilizers and pesticides.

III. Abnormal huge irrigation systems in farming: a. Salination of the ground, ground water, and creeks and wells.

b. Excessive withdrawal of ground water reserves.

IV. Surface and underground mining for gas, oil and minerals devastate land and oceans and mutilates our world. a. It causes every growing desolate and desert spots.
V. Deforestation – the rainforests in Latin America are the obvious victims – you not need grown-up persuasive communication skills to bring this to reason. a. Including their biodiverisity of forest animals;

b. Exotic plants;

c. And micro-organisms.

Radioactive materials are – without exception I would state – firm persuasive environmental speech topics and essay discourse themes for students. E.g.:

Radio Active Waste Management.

I. There are three critical stages in the radio active waste management flow: a. Spent nuclear fuel that is stored temporarily at power plants, also known as interim storage.

b. The control of the risky transportation of radioactive materials.

c. The final storage and disposal, to protect future generations from potential threats.

В
II. There are three levels of contamination: a. The low level waste: 1. Nuclear reactor complexes, and also hospitals and research departments of industrial corporations produce low level waste.

2. It is considered as hazardous during at least thirty years and have to be isolated for three to five-hundred years from now.

В b. The intermediate level waste: 1. Heavier toxic materials from nuclear power plants constrained with the obligation to secure it in concrete.

2. Solid and semi-solid organic substances, chemical sediment from metal bonding processes.

В c. The high-level nuclear waste: 1. Exceeding the other acceptable amounts, highly dangerous to humans and other organic species for thousands of years in the future.

2. Residual nuclear waste in nuclear electricity generation complexes in the uranium fuel cycle.

3. Plutonium and uranium fuel in a nuclear reactor.

Intensive farming has many pros and cons. In the next example I deal with the cons. Note that each of them could be used as single persuasive environmental speech topics for a debate or essay:

The Disadvantages of Intensive Farming.

I. Disavantage One: often factory-like farms use an overkill of chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and pesticides. a. Pesticides kill helpful insects. E.g. bees, ladybugs, and mantis.

b. Chemical residues in meat, in fruit and in vegetables end up in our human food chain.

c. The soil and water streams are contaminated.

II. Disavantage Two: The problem of overcrowded livestock feedyards and poultry holding facilities full of pigs, cows, and chickens. a. Their waste causes environmental pollution.

b. Great risk of livestock diseases and infections for humans.

III. Disavantage III: Forests fires to make way for farmland. a. Cause erosion of the soil.

b. Reduce the wild animal population.

IV. Disavantage Four: Hormonal preparations to stimulate growth. a. This must make genetic selection easier and have to facilitate the extensive breeding of animals.

You also could take the opposite side and defend the pro-intensive farming arguments by attacking and replacing them for reasons in favor of the supporters of intensive farming. That will provoke immediate discussion among your listeners. Furthermore I would like to share alternative options for persuasive environmental speech topics:

  • Endangered species;
  • Marine debris and microplastics;
  • The sea level rise.

Endangered species – The international list of protected animals. E.g. the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature IUCN. Sharpen your persuasive communication skills and judge the conditions for protection.

Marine debris and microplastics – More and more are our ocean, seas, lakes and rivers polluted. Littering: plastic bottles, bags, and so on. Persuade your audience to act. Let them support coastal volunteer operations to remove and prevent debris.

The sea level rise – What is bad about it? What are the predictions of meteorologists regarding the reported weather and climate changes? What should we do to stop it? Is it possible to stop the rise of the sea level anyway?

  • The fundamentals of logistics for oil and gas exploration.
  • Wildlife protection programs.
  • Plants, animals and organisms that live in the ocean.
  • The greatest rainforests in the world.
  • Facts and figures of littering in our community
  • Domestic water waste treatment plans.
  • Safety issues of nuclear power plants.
  • Local communities can contribute to maintenance of fragile ecosystems.
  • Global concern about climate change rose dramatically after Al Gore made his documentary.
  • The importance of sustainable development for future generations.
  • What is at stake with greenhouse carbon gas emissions?
  • Water is the upcoming hot issue in the Middle East.
  • Availability and purity of water.
  • The Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai – the smart innovative energy reuser.
  • South-American tropical forests.
  • Global climate change is not only caused by humans.
  • We need a healthy environment.
  • The effects of global warming.
  • Why conserving energy is important.
  • The negative aspects of a polluted environment.
  • The great Pacific garbage patch.
  • The ways that water pollution is harmful.
  • The effects of industrial and household waste.
  • What is global warming?
  • The benefits of organic farming.
  • Why drought is a serious problem.
  • The pollution of today’s world.
  • The importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
  • The effects of environmental degradation.
  • Why should we save birds.
  • Why we should save the Ganges.
  • How to recycle different materials.

3 Minute Speech about Nature for Students

Short speech about nature.

Good morning everyone and all present here. I am standing before you all to share my thoughts about through my speech about nature. Nature is the world around us. We, all human beings depend on nature every time and for everything. Many people admire the beauty of nature and even they write many novels and poems on it, this is because the beauty of nature cannot be expressed in one single word or saying. It provides the humans, animals and all the living beings on the earth a place to live with the joy of natural resources.

Nature- A Boon for All

Nature is the mother of all, as it helps to sustain our life. It is our companion since eternity. Despite the importance of nature in human life, we are spoiling its balance only due to our greediness. Millions of years ago, when the knowledge of man was not better than an animal. At that time man used to get all the things needed for life only from nature. Even today, at the heights of science, our requirements are met by nature only. Nature is a boon given to us, as it protects crores and crores of organisms living on the earth. It gives us forests which are the lungs of Earth.

Challenges of Nature

Our lives as human beings started on this planet Earth and since then we are exhausting its resources. But, in return, we are exposing it to the external threats of destruction and mistreatment. Due to this, beautiful forests have been destroyed, rivers have been polluted and vast open lands have been consumed for buildings and factories. We are giving challenges to nature by doing activities as hunting down animals, cutting down trees, releasing poisonous gases and polluting rivers.

Get the Huge List of 100+ Speech Topics here

Our earth is literally experiencing many strokes of destructive activities due to which the river sources are going dry, plants are dying as well as species are eliminating. Today’s world is facing the biggest problem of ‘global warming’, which has a serious impact on our environment. So we all think seriously about our activities and help to bring such situations under control.

Conservation of Nature

Conservation of nature is another important issue. Although governments are employing various means to conserve nature, individuals must also come forward to contribute to saving nature. Therefore, everyone must do the tree plantation, restricting the use of paper, stopping wastage of water and electricity. Not only these we have to stop ill practices like the hunting of animals. Also, we must go for rainwater harvesting systems. If each one of us contributes their own bit, the difference will be tremendous for nature. The beginning of life, as well as the continuation of life on earth both, are a very complex process of nature. Every organism is important for the conservation of nature.

In the end, I would just say that please don’t keep my words to yourself only. I request all to spread the message around so that every person can become a responsible global citizen who can contribute to saving our planet.

Also, focus on energy consumption. Therefore, switch off the power button, if no one is in the room. Do not use personal vehicles, and follow public transportation. We can even use bicycles for small distances to protect your environment. Thus, through these simple yet effective measures, everyone can contribute greatly towards saving our mother nature from further exploitation.

Two Killer Asteroids Are Flying by Earth, and You May Be Able to See One

The smaller of the pair was spotted only this month and could be visible with binoculars as it passes by our planet within the distance to the moon.

speech on our good earth

By Robin George Andrews

Robin George Andrews recently wrote for The Times about a comet fragment exploding over Spain and Portugal.

This week, two asteroids — one big enough to destroy a city, and the other so large it could end civilization — are set to fly near our planet.

Don’t panic.

Both have a zero percent chance of impacting Earth. And, depending on where you are in the world, you may even be able to see one of them.

The bigger of the pair, (415029) 2011 UL21, will travel at a distance more than 17 times farther away than the moon on Thursday at 4:14 p.m. Eastern time. It is a whopping 7,600 feet long, but it will be too far to spot easily without a strong telescope.

However, two days later, the smaller space rock, named 2024 MK will get considerably nearer to humanity. On Saturday, at 9:46 a.m. Eastern time, it will zip by Earth at 75 percent of the distance to the moon. If you have a decent backyard telescope or perhaps even with some good binoculars , and your skies are cloud-free, you could see the 400- to 850-foot rock as a speck of light zipping across the starry sky ahead of the sun coming up.

“The object will be moving fast, so you have to have some skills to spot it,” said Juan Luis Cano , a member of the Planetary Defense Office at the European Space Agency.

Stargazers in the United States, particularly those farther to the southwest, may catch the asteroid flitting past the planet. Those atop Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano will be well positioned to see it as the asteroid zooms by before sunrise. However, people in South America may have the easiest viewing experience, said Andrew Rivkin , a planetary astronomer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Rishi Sunak's final speech as Prime Minister: 5 July 2024

Rishi Sunak gave his final speech as Prime Minister on the steps of Downing Street.

The Rt Hon Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak’s final speech as Prime Minister (BSL) (youtube.com)

Good morning, I will shortly be seeing His Majesty the King to offer my resignation as Prime Minister.

To the country, I would like to say, first and foremost, I am sorry.

I have given this job my all.

But you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change…

…and yours is the only judgement that matters.

I have heard your anger, your disappointment; and I take responsibility for this loss.

To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who worked tirelessly but without success…

…I am sorry that we could not deliver what your efforts deserved.

It pains me to think how many good colleagues…

…who contributed so much to their communities and our country…

…will now no longer sit in the House of Commons.

I thank them for their hard work, and their service.

Following this result, I will step down as party leader…

…not immediately, but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place.

It is important that after 14 years in government the Conservative Party rebuilds…

…but also that it takes up its crucial role in Opposition professionally and effectively.

When I first stood here as your Prime Minister, I told you the most important task I had was to return stability to our economy.

Inflation is back to target, mortgage rates are falling, and growth has returned.

We have enhanced our standing in the world, rebuilding relations with allies…

…leading global efforts to support Ukraine…

…and becoming the home of the new generation of transformative technologies.

And our United Kingdom is stronger too: with the Windsor Framework, devolution restored in Northern Ireland, and our Union strengthened.

I’m proud of those achievements.

I believe this country is safer, stronger, and more secure than it was 20 months ago.

And it is more prosperous, fairer, and resilient than it was in 2010.

Whilst he has been my political opponent, Sir Keir Starmer will shortly become our Prime Minister.

In this job, his successes will be all our successes, and I wish him and his family well.

Whatever our disagreements in this campaign, he is a decent, public-spirited man, who I respect.

He and his family deserve the very best of our understanding, as they make the huge transition to their new lives behind this door…

…and as he grapples with this most demanding of jobs in an increasingly unstable world.

I would like to thank my colleagues, my Cabinet, the Civil Service - especially here in Downing Street…

…the team at Chequers, my staff, CCHQ…

…but most of all I would like to express my gratitude to my wife Akshata and our beautiful daughters.

I can never thank them enough for the sacrifices they have made so that I might serve our country.

One of the most remarkable things about Britain is just how unremarkable it is…

…that two generations after my grandparents came here with little, I could become Prime Minister…

…and that I could watch my two young daughters light Diwali candles on the steps in Downing Street.

We must hold true to that idea of who we are…

…that vision of kindness, decency, and tolerance that has always been the British way.

This is a difficult day, at the end of a number of difficult days.

But I leave this job honoured to have been your Prime Minister.

This is the best country in the world and that is thanks entirely to you, the British people…

…the true source of all our achievements, our strengths, and our greatness.

The Greatest Speeches of All Time, and What Biden Said

The oratory was warmed-over, but the substance was right.

Trump and Biden and NATO

Listen to this article

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration.

I f you want to reach the kids , you’ve got to go where the kids are. Where are they right now? With their devices, of course. And what are they doing on those devices? Listening to podcasts, of course. This, presumably, was the reason behind the release of a corker: NATO Through Time , in which a grandfatherly former NATO official and three young and extremely well-informed co-hosts plunge into the past.

What’s next, Yalta: The Musical ? It would probably be a more successful venture, because Yalta was once; NATO is forever. From age to age, a new generation of supporters must be rallied, and that is becoming the 13th labor of Hercules. If the thudding disappointment of Unfrosted taught us anything, it’s that young people hate Boomer nostalgia. And NATO is the rotary phone of geopolitical alliances.

I grew up a long time ago, when the world was every bit as complicated and dangerous as it is today. But, if only as a reassuring fiction, the American president was often referred to as “the leader of the free world.” America was the most powerful country in history, and it was sworn to protect—and was protected by, should the terrible day come—an alliance of other free nations.

NATO was principally a firebreak against the Soviet Union and remains one against Russia. But Barack Obama felt that a foreign policy in which Russia was our chief enemy was a little old-fashioned. Too From Russia With Love . Too Rocky IV and Rambo III . In a presidential debate in 2012, he mocked Mitt Romney for saying that Russia was the biggest threat to America: “The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because, you know, the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.” Then the Cold War rose from the dead and Russia invaded Crimea, and two years ago began its bloodthirsty attack on Ukraine.

Two people who don’t like NATO are Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump (who once told his foreign-policy adviser, “ I don’t give a shit about NATO ”). This ought to ring a distant alarm bell. Managing the very special relationship between these two powerful men seems to be Trump’s version of NATO: cheaper, more direct, perhaps one day turning into an alliance of its own.

Around the world, autocracy is rising; spend any time at all reading about the evidence, and your hair catches on fire. Russia, China, North Korea—they have all been strengthening their ties to one another; all of them have a dim view of America and of democracy.

Toward self-preservation, allow me to offer my own extremely brief assessment of NATO through time, in the form of three speeches by American presidents.

N o one really knows what John F. Kennedy actually said in his famous 1961 inaugural address , because he was so goddamn sexy and so goddamn confident that the beautiful words and soaring phrases float through your receptive brain but can find no purchase. But by looping the video for a week, this is what I’ve got:

Kennedy believed that the Second World War—which had ended just 15 years earlier—was a turning point in American history. The war had revealed the extent of America’s commitment to freedom and its special role as the defender of nations where tyrants ruled. The speech recognized that the dropping of atomic bombs in Japan had forever changed the equation of human progress: “The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life.” America had nuclear weapons, but so did its greatest enemy.

Embedded within the beautiful speech was the rationale for a lot of very questionable foreign policy. But the speech was also a flex and a warning: “To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United, there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided, there is little we can do—for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder.”

In his beautiful words, he was talking about the rotary phone—NATO. And the desperate need to keep the peace: “To those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction. We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed.”

R onald Reagan presided over the Soviet Union’s demise. He also popularized that oxymoronic piece of realpolitik “Trust but verify.”

In 1984, he gave a speech marking the 40th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy. Peggy Noonan wrote it, and it took its place among the greatest American political speeches of all time. No one could sell a speech like Reagan, and this one opened like a novel, or better yet, a screenplay:

ESTABLISHING SHOT : “We stand on a lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France.” DISSOLVE : “The air is soft, but 40 years ago at this moment, the air was dense with smoke and the cries of men, and the air was filled with the crack of rifle fire and the roar of cannon.”

The genius of the speech was that, while it described dramatic action that took place in the context of extremely complicated political history, it left that history as assumed fact and centered on the individual and collective actions of very young American men, some of them boys, who had more or less been dumped out of landing craft into waist-high waves, and were immediately under German machine-gun fire.

Some survivors of that pitiless day sat in the front rows of the audience, and Reagan addressed them directly: “You all knew that some things are worth dying for. One’s country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it’s the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man.”

I doubt if any of the terrified young men bleeding and dying on that beach thought of themselves as morally bound to defend democracy. But Reagan followed an established tradition of recognizing the highest aspirations of American troops in combat and of finding within the individual acts of one soldier the aims and honor of a just war.

In one of the speech’s most arresting passages, Reagan tied the horrors of combat back to the suffering of parents and families. “The Americans who fought here that morning knew word of the invasion was spreading through the darkness back home. They thought—or felt in their hearts, though they couldn’t know in fact—that in Georgia they were filling the churches at 4 a.m., in Kansas they were kneeling on their porches and praying, and in Philadelphia they were ringing the Liberty Bell.”

I don’t think any other politician of the past 50 years could have sold that line about the Liberty Bell, but when Reagan said it, you were pierced by it.

Young Americans then had comparatively little experience with the Second World War as an exercise of American greatness. They’d been ground down by Vietnam, and by all the music and movies about it, and by the homeless vets who sat in wheelchairs panhandling and drinking. Vietnam had brought shame to America—but the Second World War was different. This speech gave them a chance to reconsider America in a new light, as the hero of a global catastrophe. This was before Tom Brokaw’s The Greatest Generation and Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, and Spielberg and Tom Hanks’s Band of Brothers . In fact, those lionizing, mythmaking inventions probably would not have existed without Reagan’s speech.

The tone was Shakespearean, Prince Hal into Henry V: “These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war.”

But the real heart of the speech was here, in the emphasis on the ways that the Allied powers had worked together to achieve this joint victory: “All of these men were part of a roll call of honor with names that spoke of a pride as bright as the colors they bore: the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, Poland’s 24th Lancers, the Royal Scots Fusiliers, the Screaming Eagles, the Yeomen of England’s armored divisions, the forces of Free France, the Coast Guard’s ‘Matchbox Fleet,’ and you, the American Rangers.”

And then he said this, possibly the point of the whole thing—his endorsement of the idea that the “strength of America’s allies is vital to the United States”: “We were with you then; we are with you now. Your hopes are our hopes, and your destiny is our destiny.”

W hen I read that Joe Biden was giving his own speech in Normandy this month, I think I actually said, “O almighty God, forbid it.” I knew it would feature our ever-diminishing president delivering a warmed-over version of Reagan’s great speech.

It was that. But, in its unspectacular way, it was also a speech that drew the sharpest possible contrast between Biden and Donald Trump, and what Trump imagines is his ability to cajole and bully our enemies, to find common cause with them and to stage dramas in which he emerges as a global ambassador of peace through strength. During his administration, Trump threatened North Korea with nuclear attack (sweet Jesus!). But he softened after Kim Jong Un “ wrote me beautiful letters .” The kind of foreign policy that involves, say, sending aid to Ukraine to beat back Russian soldiers seems far less interesting to him.

Biden said this: “When we talk about American democracy, we often talk about the ideals of life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. What we don’t talk about is how hard it is.” He said the “most natural instinct is to walk away, to be selfish, to force our will upon others, to seize power.”

“American democracy asks the hardest of things: to believe that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.”

Y ou would think that freedom is the force that flows naturally, but it’s not. Freedom generally has to be fought for and always must be vigilantly—and sometimes militarily—guarded.

There’s no point listing Joe Biden’s manifold shortcomings here. They’re in front of our eyes, and they’re not all “ cheap fakes .” But Biden believes in NATO and in supporting our allies. Maybe that seems quaint, and rotary-phone-as-hell, but these are very good things.

Trump is flashier: a convicted felon, an insult comic, the last man on Earth to run on a platform of “Trust me,” and yet it’s working on a huge number of Americans.

If you vote for Biden, you’ll have to ask yourself a question: Is he still fit for office, or is he too frail, too ancient-seeming to make another term anything but a mockery of the country?

And if you vote for Trump, you’ll have to ask yourself this one: Do you feel lucky?

Jill Biden enthusiastically supports Joe after debate: 'You did such a great job'

speech on our good earth

First Lady Jill Biden gave President Joe Biden a warm welcome as he stepped on stage at an Atlanta hotel after Thursday night's debate − despite his performance sparking concerns about his candidacy .

"Didn't the president do a great job? Yes!" said Jill Biden to supporters who gathered at the hotel after Joe stepped on stage. After a brief pause, the crowd starting chanting "four more years!" before Jill joined in on the chant.

"Joe you did such a great job," she went on. "You answered every question, you knew all the facts." Then she turned to the crowd to ask, "And what did Trump do?"

"Lie!" they all shouted in unison.

Other reactions to the first debate were mostly negative. Here's a look at what people are saying.

Swing state voters react to Trump-Biden debate

Reporters for USA TODAY's network partners interviewed swing-state residents shortly after the debate ended to see how they thought each candidate fared.

A voter in Nevada compared  President Joe Biden’s performance  to elder abuse.

A voter in Georgia was so disgusted with  what he was hearing  from the Democratic incumbent and former President Donald Trump that he quit watching, walked to a liquor store and bought a six-pack of beer.

Another voter in Wisconsin called it “a painful experience.”

Keeping our feet solidly on the ground but with great ideals

By Paolo Ruffini

There is a question underlying Pope Francis’ speech yesterday in Trieste, which concerns everyone and not just so-called professional politicians

What is politics for us?

And connected to this question there is another, or rather there are two more questions: What is democracy? And what is the role of every individual, and therefore also of Christians, of Catholics, in the crisis of our democracies?

These are not academic questions. On the contrary.

They ask us to get out of that excessive abstraction in which we often take refuge when we reduce politics to a power game, to a mathematical calculation, or topography, or to occupy positions of command, and when we transform democracy into a cold handbook of rules that govern this game that too many - mistakenly - consider belonging to someone else.

The truth is that by pretending to be just spectators, rather than actors (i.e. possible protagonists of progress for the common good), by watching passively on the sidelines, we end up acting like Pontius Pilate: washing our hands ends up worsening both the crisis of politics and that of democracy, and, ultimately, our destiny.

Pope Francis' response is different: it is concrete and in times of crisis he does not speak with abstract schemes but challenges us to examine our personal and collective conscience, both as individuals and as a people.

What game are we playing?

If politics and democracy do not only concern some (the others: those who vote, those who govern, those who oppose, those who militate, those who take to the streets); if they concern each of us, our lives, our choices, and not just at the moment when we cast our ballot, if everything is interconnected, what game are we playing?

The Pope's questions are addressed to us and bring us back down to earth. They are concrete. Like charity, of which politics - as Francis repeats, citing his predecessors - is the highest form. They blow up the carefully constructed schemes of polarization. They adopt a paradigm that only the shortsightedness of our time does not consider political. It is the paradigm of love, which demands participation, which includes everything, and “does not settle for treating the symptoms but seeks to address the root causes. It is a form of charity that allows politics to rise to its responsibilities and move beyond polarizations,”

What place does charity - love for others - have in our political reasoning?

Charity – as the Pope underlines – is concrete. It's inclusive.

It knows us name by name. It calls upon us to assume personal responsibility on the path towards a more human development.

It involves us in the construction of an alternative to the moral atrophy of the throw-away dynamics.

It is the only true antidote to the cancer that corrodes politics and democracies, which feeds on hatred and indifference.

It is up to each one of us not to reduce politics, which we all need, to a sum of numbers, of percentages, to an “empty box” to be filled.

It is up to each one of us to restore hope, the prophecy of a future to be built together, all together, and the beauty of sharing projects and stories in the weaving of the common good.

Politics – the Pope told us – is “participation”. “It's taking care of everything.” It is thinking “of ourselves as a single people,” not as my clan, my family, my friends". “It's not populism. No, it's something else."

Participation is responsible, populism, on the other hand, cancels out responsibility, which is individual, in the indistinctness of the mass.

Think big, roll up your sleeves to do big things, together: this is the task of Catholics in politics.

Feet on the ground, but great ideals.

We are called to be idealists with a great sense of reality and limits, aware that we can change reality, step by step on a journey that is always ongoing. Without mistaking the way with a point of arrival and possession, as Father Primo Mazzolari used to say.

In Evangelii Gaudium Pope Francis writes that “An authentic faith always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it.”

Father Primo Mazzolari translated all this by inviting us to look up: not to the right or left, or to the centre, but high up. Starting with being new men instead of adventurers of the new. Men and women who are capable of freely taking on themselves and honouring a commitment rather than behaving like Pontius Pilate. People, who do not stand watching, on the sidelines, the fight for justice. Who do not transform passion into hatred, and justice into a summary settlement of scores; who do not deny the ends with the means, who don’t yield to the culture of hyperbole, do not preach magical solutions; do not renounce the rule of charity in politics. They are men and women who do not delude themselves into thinking that they can build heaven on earth, do not mistake politics for the momentary challenge between those who win and those who lose, but rather live politics as a path to which we are all called and see it as a call to always do better.

The words Aldo Moro said when he was a young university professor come back to our mind as a parameter: “Probably, despite everything, the historical evolution, of which we will have been the acting causes, will not satisfy our ideal needs; the wonderful promise, which seems contained in the intrinsic strength and beauty of those ideals, will not be kept. This means that men will always have to remain in a position of more or less acute pessimism when faced with the law and the State.

And their pain will never be fully comforted. But this dissatisfaction, this pain, is the same dissatisfaction of man with his life, too often narrower and more miserable than his ideal beauty would legitimately seem to suggest. It is the pain of the man who continually finds everything smaller than he would like, whose life is so different from the ideal he dreamed of.

It is a pain that does not subside, if not a little, when it is confessed to souls who know how to understand or have expressed it in art, or when the strength of faith or the beauty of nature dissolves that anxiety and restores peace. Perhaps man's destiny is not to fully realize justice but to perpetually hunger and thirst for justice. But it is always a great destiny."
