When Sophia, a social humanoid robot and the world's first robot citizen, greeted the audience at a conference in Kathmandu with "Namaste Nepal," the hall burst into applause of awe and appreciation. 

As cameras from local and international media flashed and under the admiring eyes of the audience, Sophia proceeded with her keynote speech and interactions highlighting the importance of technology in the development of human lives. The robot, who is championing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Asia-Pacific, with a focus on innovation, was in Nepal Wednesday to attend the Innovation Conference and Fair: "Technology of Public Services and Development" organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Dressed in a white UNDP logoed T-shirt, the two-and-a-half-year-old, red-lipped robot said that technology provides endless possibilities and opportunities for the world. 

Highlighting the importance of technology in Nepal and its applicability to government models, Sophia said it can transform state institutions and help in meeting global sustainable development goals. "If artificial intelligence is used in Nepal, we can ensure better public services, a revolution in the agriculture sector, make better use of limited resources, protect the environment and make the world a better place," she said. The celebrity robot, a "citizen" of Saudi Arabia, added that technology and artificial intelligence can help in ending poverty and fighting starvation, corruption and ensuring gender equality.

"Machines are here to make your life easier and we can connect your country to the rest of the world," Sophia said. The audience, comprising government officials, private sector representatives, civil servants and tech enthusiasts, among others, were nodding in agreement at almost all of her statements, and cheered and applauded throughout her speech. "I hope the conference will inspire and generate brilliant ideas to help Nepal achieve its development vision and global goals," Sophia said in the conclusion of her three-minute long keynote speech. 

The social robot developed by Hong Kong-based company, Hanson Robotics, also answered a few questions raised by UNDP country director Renaud Meyer. English 9 93 In a question about humans fearing a robot takeover, Sophia joked citing it as fake news, although mentioned that she could be the first non-human to climb Mount Everest, which saw the entire hall erupt with laughter. The one-day conference also featured an "innovation fair" showcasing separate stalls with fresh innovations from youth, tech groups, NGOs and private sector participants, but Sophia was certainly the main attraction. In her opening statement, Valerie Julliand, UN resident coordinator, said technology is not just changing our lives but also providing solutions to different sorts of problems. 

With technological innovations, such as e-education, telemedicine, and the internet, it is possible to connect remote areas and people with solutions which were impossible earlier, the UNDP said in its statement. According to the UNDP, it is developing and scaling-up innovative project prototypes to address gender empowerment, combat gender-based violence and disaster risk reduction, with a focus also on green energy, youth engagement and post-disaster recovery in Nepal.

Computers are doing wonders since their invention. Every field of work needs a computer in their day-to-day work today. Transportation, offices, industries, research, education and the list goes on where a computer has an enormous and positive impact. AI or artificial intelligence is one of the emerging topics today. Artificial intelligence has revolutionized the way things work. Let’s find out about Artificial Intelligence and its Impact for a country like Nepal below.

It is because they use machine learning (a subset of Artificial Intelligence) to filter large data and come up with the most relevant results without you knowing about it.

Artificial intelligence is the ability of a computer or machine to think and learn the way we call intelligence. It is the simulations of human activity by machines or computer. Artificial intelligence enables the system or program in learning, reasoning, and self-correction as required. AI is the work done by machines or computers as humans do.

They can understand and adapt to the environment and most importantly decide the right course of action. AI can automate all the actions in a way any human would have done.

What impact can Artificial Intelligence make for a developing country like Nepal?

Nepal like other countries is affected by all the latest innovations in technology. How can a developing country like Nepal benefit from Artificial Intelligence? This is not an easy question to answer. It depends on many factors and mostly on the government’s policy on IT and related fields.

There are researches who show how economic growth will rise in developed countries with the increased use of AI. Research conducted by The Accenture Institute for High Performance shows that by 2035 A.D the US will have an annual growth rate of 4.6% compared to present 2.6%. Similarly, the UK will have an annual growth rate of 3.9% compared to the present 2.9%. These are some examples of developed countries.

For developing countries, AI has a more significant effect. We can see how technology-driven changes have helped such countries in tackling a number of challenges.

Nepal can benefit from this too, especially in Farming, Health Care, Resource provision, transportation, Electricity and so on. How can this be achieved depends on the policy adopted by the Government and the private sectors investing in the field of AI? There are some private companies already operating here in the field of AI, however, no such machines are used significantly until today.

What is being done for Artificial Intelligence in Nepal?

One of those AI companies is Fuse Machines, which was founded in 2011 AD has been operating in different fields to develop AI-enabled machines and program. There are some other companies and organizations that are working in AI, like Paailatechnology which is developing a robot waiter for the restaurant business. Apart from the waiter robots, they have developed speech recognition software for the Nepali language along with text to speech converter.

There is some work done in the field of AI but these are not sufficient to catch-up on what is happening around the world. However, Nepali AI enthusiasts can now access the global event named AI Saturdays. AI Saturdays help AI enthusiasts and learners come together in a single platform and learn from the AI experts and leaders. AI enthusiasts can be part of the AI Saturday event in Kathmandu.

Another group of AI enthusiasts is working together with different activities being organized for interested people. They are Artificial Intelligence for Development ( AID ), a group working as a research and development organization. Their primary focus has been in bringing applied AI solutions to existing problems of the community.

Some practical uses and future possibility

Some restaurant chain has already started using the waiter Robot waiter in Kathmandu. The owner has received a positive response so far and it has a positive impact on the business as well. Nepali microfinance companies can use AI to analyze risk and detect fraud as well.

This technology is already in practice in Africa. The lending company can analyze the data before doing any transaction with their client. The government can benefit from AI as well, especially in e-governance , quality data and other technical aspects. Machine learning analyzes large scale data which can be beneficial for government and private sectors. They can use this analysis to improve employment opportunities by shortlisting suitable and deserving candidates.

Almost two-thirds of the Nepali population rely on agriculture for their living but with very minimal effect on the economy. AI can have an immediate impact on farming with the use of technology. Public service is another sector that can benefit from the use of AI.

The automation of most of the work will make the service faster and reliable. Data analysis will help the service provider in shortening the service delivery time. These are some achievable goals in Nepal with the use of AI.

However, we need proper planning and implementation of these plans. With proper implementation, it is with no doubt that AI can resolve a lot of complex problems. Nepal can use it in a different area of infrastructure development.

Disaster preparedness and post-disaster reconstruction

During 2015 Earthquake response there was the use of drones. Not only drones but the data collected during that time helped in tracking the mass movement. Two major Nepali telecom operators NT and Ncell also helped with the location tracing during that time. All this became possible due to large scale data analysis.

Fuse machine and GeoSpatial jointly helped the reconstruction study of Sankhu city during the post-earthquake response. There is a possibility to attract more companies and enthusiast in disaster recovery and reconstruction projects.

Smart Agriculture – future is bright

Whenever I read articles related to AI and think what can be the best field to utilize it in our country, one particular field strikes me time and again. Smart agriculture is possible and farmers can benefit from the use of AI tools.

AI helps in predicting the best harvesting time. Farmers can use pesticides on only the affected plants with the use of smart technology. One such example where technology changed the traditional farming approach with higher profit can be the strawberry farms from California.

There are other examples of dairy farmers where AI is helping farmers to track if any of their cows are sick. For any farms with more than 500 cow,s it can be troublesome to trace any sick cow. However, now with the use of AIs in their farmers can achieve this by sitting in their office. The milking machine already serves as a great assistance for dairy farms.

Medicine Delivery in the rural area

Medicine delivery to the rural area is difficult and this has a severe effect on the health of locals in those areas. There are alternatives to the road but not all places have airports and helipads. Not to mention this can be expensive when it comes to operating cost. Drones are best utilized in such a situation with vital medicines being delivered on time and cheaper. The medical field can have other benefits with the use of AI.

Education Sector

In a country like ours where we lack the proper infrastructure for education, AI can be helpful for delivering quality education. AI tools like personal learning assistant can be vital for students in rural areas lacking good teaching facility. Developing countries like Nepal must focus on using AI to solve micro problems at the beginning. Gradually the use of AI can go larger. The education sector can start with basic learning capabilities and enhance the delivery later on.

It is high time that our policymakers have concrete plans on the use of digital technology for the realization of #DigitalNepal. AI can help boost the economy as well as provide better service delivery in Nepal . The achievement is guaranteed with changes in small scale but with concrete planning. AI will also be vital in making our lives better in days to come.

Embracing the Age of AI, Robotics and ML in Nepal

Innovative startups are tapping into the infinite potential of AI and machine learning (ML) in Nepal.

The world has changed to a great extent due to new strides in technology. After the ground shifting changes brought in by the extensive use of computers and smart devices over the last few decades, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and machine learning are now the new tools to unlock future potentials to positively impact the lives of people the world over. Nepal is also witnessing the unfolding of this technology revolution as some creative and geeky techies in the country have taken charge to bring positive changes in the society. Currently, some tech startups seem to be determined to carry on with their initiations in order to enable Nepal to join the global bandwagon of the new technological revolution.  

One such notable company is Paaila Technology which has developed a robot named ‘Pari’ for Nepal SBI Bank. The robot is placed in the bank’s Durbarmarg branch. When ‘Pari 1.0’ was launched, it only used to greet customers in the bank. Paaila technology has upgraded the robot to ‘Pari 2.0’, and now it identifies customers through facial recognition and can greet customers with their name. ‘Pari’ is the first commercial humanoid robot developed in Nepal.

Similarly, the company has also developed robots named ‘Ginger’, which are deployed in Naulo Restaurant in Durbarmarg. The robots work as the waiters in the restaurant. It can take orders and serve food to the customers. According to Dipkamal Bhusal, managing director at Paaila Technology, the response after developing robots ‘Pari’ and ‘Ginger’ has been amazing, and the company has received several orders for ‘Ginger’ from European and Middle East countries.

Apart from robotics, the company is also working on language processing, speech synthesis and recognition. “We are working on language processing and speech recognition. This will help visually impaired people as the computer-generated system can read texts in the Nepali language. The technology will also be able to convert Romanised Nepali to Devanagari script,” says Bhusal.

Fusemachines Nepal is another startup which mainly works on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The company is currently working on different projects including handwriting recognition. According to the company’s Senior Director of AI Services Subhash Manandhar, the handwriting recognition service can be beneficial to banking institutions. “It will help the organisations to digitally enter the know-your-customer (KYC) form, among other uses. Also, the technology will help to transcribe Nepali audio files,” says Manandhar.

Likewise, Fusemachines, in partnership with Artificial Intelligence of Development (AID), is organising the AI Expo in August. “The expo is the first of its kind in Nepal. The expo will bridge the gap between the academic and business communities.  It will help connect talents to digital opportunities while contributing to skills enhancement. The event will also be beneficial in providing an insight into the deployment of AI across different verticals that the industry can learn and benefit from,” Manadhar adds.  

A Boon for Agriculture and Transportation According to Dipkamal Bhusal, co-founder and managing director at Paaila Technology, the agriculture sector of the country will grow at a significant rate through the development of machine learning. “The technology can automatically detect the nature of the soil and analyse the amount of water and pesticides needed for the crop. After automation, robots and drones can spray pesticides, irrigate the field and can plant crops,” Bhusal said, adding this can increase productivity at an unbelievable rate.

While the government’s record keeping still runs traditionally, Subhash Manadhar, senior director of AI Services at Fuse Machines Pvt Ltd, says that if the government system is digitised machine learning can extract different data that can be beneficial for proper planning. “The technology can also be used in the transportation sector of the country. If the data and routes are digitised, the computer-based system can generate new routes which can be beneficial during heavy traffic and during other situations,” he said.

Challenges At the moment, there is no support from the government and the startups are doing things on their own to nurture the nascent areas of AI, robotics and machine learning.  According to Bhusal, it is difficult for startup companies to work without support from the government. “The government can exempt or lower custom duty to encourage startup companies in Nepal. Also, it can remove taxes for startup companies for a certain period which will help the sector grow,” he says, adding importing different raw materials from foreign countries with high custom rates increases the cost of the product.

Likewise, Manadhar says that the government system is yet to be digitised in Nepal. “Incorporating machine learning is not possible without digitisation,” he mentions, adding that the government should focus on digitising the system.

A romance bookstore boom.

The arrival — and success — of brick-and-mortar romance stores.

There’s a boom in romance bookstores. More than 20 of them have sprung up around the United States in the past few years — up from just two in 2020 — and more are on the way.

They have quirky names like the Ripped Bodice, Tropes & Trifles, Love’s Sweet Arrow, and Kiss & Tale. They’re sprinkled across the country, from Alaska to Maine. They’re largely owned and operated by women, and have become vibrant community hubs for romance fans.

As a reporter who covers publishing, I’ve been following the soaring sales for romance, which is by far the top-selling fiction genre. But the arrival of brick-and-mortar romance stores struck me as something new, and surprising.

For a story in The Times, I visited romance stores in South Florida and Brooklyn, and talked to booksellers, publishers and fans of the genre, to find out why romance bookstores are suddenly thriving .

How readers fell for romance

Romance writers and their fans point out that, about a decade ago, there wasn’t much enthusiasm for the genre in independent bookstores. Even though romance has long been a major moneymaker for publishers, the literary world tended to look down on it as frothy and unserious, or worse, as smut.

Rebecca Zanetti told me that after she started publishing paranormal romance in 2011, it was hard for her to book a signing at a store, even though her novels were best sellers.
