Garrioch: ottawa senators part ways with assistant gm trent mann back to video.

A year after being named to a role as one of the club’s assistant general managers, the Senators parted ways with Trent Mann.

The circumstances of his departure are unclear, but league sources told Postmedia that Mann is no longer with the organization after a meeting with GM Pierre Dorion at the Canadian Tire Centre on Tuesday morning.

This decision comes on the heels of Anthony LeBlanc, the club’s president of business operations, confirming Monday to Postmedia he’d resigned from his post after just a little more than three years on job and less than a month after the club was sold to Toronto billionaire Michael Andlauer.

The paperwork is still being worked on for the sale and isn’t expected to close until September. When the sale is completed, it’s expected further changes will be made.

The NHL’s board of governors haven’t approved the sale yet, but that could happen sometime in the next month or so and the belief is former Senators president Cyril Leeder is the frontrunner to return his old role.

Mann’s departure is the end of an era for the organization and it comes on the heels of the decision by the Senators to fire his brother, Troy Mann, from his post as the head coach of the club’s AHL affiliate in Belleville last February following a win over the Rochester Americans.

Assistant David Bell took over and was recently placed in a full-time role with the club heading into next season. The decision to fire Troy Mann came as a surprise, but the Senators didn’t feel the message to the prospects was the same as the one being used in Ottawa.

“A change like this is a difficult decision, but we are aligned internally and feel this is necessary for the short and long-term growth of the players in our organization as well as the cohesion in systematic play between Ottawa and Belleville,” Belleville GM Ryan Bowness said on Feb 2.

The decision by the organization to fire Troy Mann caused tension in the organization’s front office. Trent Mann would have known when Troy took over the post in Belleville that there would come a day his brother would be fired, but only learned of the decision after it happened that night.

Trent Mann, 49, joined the organization as a part-time amateur scout in 2010 and moved into a full-time role with the Senators in 2014. He took over the role as the club’s lead amateur scout in 2016 and did a lot of work to help make sure the Senators had success at the draft table.

Though he was promoted to the role of assistant GM, Mann was in charge of the club’s amateur scouting staff. He would have signed an extension with the Senators when he was moved into his new role so Mann likely has two years left on his contract.

The good news is the club has the bulk of its scouting staff in place. They’ve drafted the likes of Brady Tkachuk, Drake Batherson, Tim Stutzle, Jake Sanderson, Shane Pinto, Alex Formenton and Tyler Kleven.

Mann ran the club’s draft table in Nashville last month and was on hand for the development camp that wrapped up last Thursday, but it would appear that will be his final act with the organization.

Mann couldn’t be reached for comment. He was all smiles after the draft because his son, Mateo, was selected in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Flyers last month.

Any decision of this type would have to be approved by the board of directors running the Senators on behalf of the estate of the late Eugene Melnyk. Sheldon Plener, the club’s outgoing representative at the NHL board of governors meeting, is still part of the day-to-day operation.

WORKING BEING DONE

Speaking on TSN 1200 on Tuesday, Dorion indicated he’s not finished making changes after dealing disgruntled winger Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night.

The Senators were able to get Dominik Kubalik back as part of the package for DeBrincat.

“In a perfect world we’d always like to improve our team. Obviously, Kubalik has scored 20 goals and our people feel he can be a top-six player,” Dorion told the station.

Dorion confirmed he has spoken with the agents for unrestricted free-agent winger Vladimir Tarasenko and he remains an option. The talk is the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and San Jose Sharks remain in the mix.

The possibility also exists that the club will make another deal.

“If we make a trade to acquire a forward, we’ll have to move either another forward or assets,” he added. “I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into a situation here, but we feel if we need to acquire a player, he needs to have some term on his contract.”

The club signed minor-league goalie Kevin Mandolese, a restricted free agent, to a one-year deal that will pay him $110,000 in the AHL and $775,000 in the NHL next season.
