Guidelines for writing a PhD proposal for Translation Studies
Below you will find certain headings under which it's useful to present your research proposal. The headings are listed in chronological order.
1. Territory/ Introduction
The first stage of your proposal establishes the territory in which the proposed research will place itself. This territory can be either
- a research territory (i.e. the academic field that is going to be addressed by the research), or
- a ‘real world’ territory (i.e. what kind of applications or implications the proposed project can have in the world outside the immediate academic field).
In some research proposals both territories can be usefully addressed.
2. Gap/ Rationale
Here you indicate the gap in the knowledge or the problem in the territory. With your research, you want to fill in this gap or to solve this problem. If the gap is in the research territory, it means you aim at contributing to the general understanding and knowledge within the discipline. If it is in the ‘real world’ (e.g. environmental, social, commercial problems), it means your objective is to offer a solution to particular problems.
3. Goal/Objective
Here you state the aim or general objective of your study. You explain what the project intends to do, what its chief contribution will be. It is in this stage that you can suggest how to fill in the gap presented in the previous stage.
4. Reporting Previous Research/ Literature Review
Here you can report or refer to the earlier research in the field, either by yourself or by others.
5. Theoretical framework
This is the section where you elaborate on the theoretical approach(es) you will adopt while examining your data or those approaches which you will be challenging, enhancing or refuting. This section is crucial in giving the evaluators an idea about how prepared you are to do research at doctoral level.
6. Data and accessibility
The material you will be looking at in your research will be presented here. This section should also mention any particular difficulties envisaged in accessing your data and how you are planning to overcome them.
7. Means/Methodology
Here you specify how the goal will be achieved, describing the methods, procedures, plans of actions and tasks that lead to the goal. At the initial stage of your research, you do not need to put a lot of details here. Yet there should still be an obvious link between the gap, the goal, the theoretical framework, the data and the means.
8. Achievements
You might wish to conjecture about the anticipated results, findings or outcomes of the study, if you already have a general idea about them. Of course, the actual results, findings or outcomes may differ drastically in the end.
9. Benefits
You can then briefly explain the usefulness and value of these achievements for the domain of research itself, for the world outside or for both.
10. Competence Claim
It is here that you might wish to boast about yourself! You can make a statement to the effect that you are well qualified to undertake this research and to carry out the tasks involved.
11. Importance Claim
You may wish to conclude your proposal by emphasising the urgency or importance of your proposal’s territory, its objectives, or its anticipated outcomes with respect to either the ‘real world’ or the research field.
12. References
Here list only those texts you referred to within your proposal. We do not ask for a bibliography, but a references list.
Prepared by:
Dr Şebnem Susam-Sarajeva

Imagine Hearing A Distant Relative Telling Stories in a Nearly Forgotten Language. What Would You Do?
For jared coleman, ph.d. ’24, it meant developing ai tools to help revitalize owens valley paiute, a critically endangered indigenous language..
![phd translation tamil Mountain and trees collage photo with Paiute words in cursive](https://viterbischool.usc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Caitlin_1200x600.jpg)
Coleman is a member of the Big Pine Paiute Tribe of Owens Valley — his father, David, grew up on the tribe’s reservation in Big Pine, CA, and Paiute is his ancestral language.
Jared Coleman, who recently earned his Ph.D. in computer science, and his supervisor, Bhaskar Krishnamachari , are bound by a shared love of languages — both human and computer.
Krishnamachari grew up in India, speaking Tamil, Hindi and English, and started learning French and Mandarin Chinese in college. Coleman, who was raised Anglophone, loved Spanish in high school and learned Portuguese from his now-wife and friends in college.
During the pandemic, Coleman started taking online classes in a lesser-known language: Owens Valley Paiute. Coleman is a member of the Big Pine Paiute Tribe of Owens Valley — his father, David, grew up on the tribe’s reservation in Big Pine, CA, and Paiute is his ancestral language.
![phd translation tamil Jared Coleman](https://viterbischool.usc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/jared_coleman-300x300.png)
Jared Coleman wondered: Could large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT help to hone endangered language speaking skills?
ChatGPT and other LLMs exhibit human-level performance on many natural-language tasks in English because one-fifth of the world speaks English. The same is true of other widely used tongues. But Paiute is deemed a “no-resource language,” meaning there are no publicly available Paiute sentences translated into English on which to train a machine learning model.
In a new paper, “ LLM-Assisted Rule-Based Machine Translation for Low/No-Resource Languages ,” Coleman and Krishnamachari propose a machine translation approach called LLM-RBMT (Rule-Based Machine Translation) to help people learn no-resource languages. The paper’s co-authors are Khalil Iskarous, a USC Dornsife associate professor of linguistics, and Ruben Rosales, an independent researcher. Their approach consists of a more “old school” rule-based translator tools and a more advanced, natural language-based large language model (LLM).
In the researchers’ method, the LLM does not translate into or from Owens Valley Paiute. Instead, it helps to guide the rule-based translators, which rely on grammatical and vocabulary rules to translate between languages.
“You learn a language from context and speaking it all the time, so the more tools you can build, the better.” Jared Coleman
“Essentially, the LLM acts as a sophisticated intermediary, using its advanced understanding of language to make sure the rule-based system produces accurate translations,” said Coleman.
The translation tool simplifies complex sentences and uses placeholders (in this case, English words) for unknown words. While this process loses some meaning, it still produces understandable and grammatically correct translations.
This method, said Coleman, mirrors how language learners naturally speak by mixing known and unknown words, making it a practical tool for real-world use.
“The tool is smart enough, given a few hints, to be able to do a lot of the translation on its own,” adds Krishnamachari.
Personal satisfaction
Coleman also built and maintains a suite of digital tools related to language revitalization, named Kubishi or ‘brain’ in Paiute, including an online dictionary, and a sentence-builder and translation system enabled by this research.
Overall, the paper, which will be presented this week at NAACL’s AmericasNLP workshop, found that LLM’s remarkable general-purpose language skills make them a promising tool in helping revitalize critically endangered languages.
For his part, Coleman credits his tribe’s members, past and present, for paving the path. “A lot of people in my tribe have been working for a long time on different language revitalization efforts, including classes, dictionaries, recordings,” said Coleman. “So as excited about this research as I am, I know it is one piece of a much larger puzzle.”
Indeed, the paper points to many directions for future work, including adding more complex sentence structures to test the limits of the methodology outlined in his paper. Beyond that, it’s both a personal and academic achievement for Coleman, who will join Loyola Marymount University as an assistant professor in computer science this fall.
“My dad did not grow up speaking the language – like many families, it was forced out of use by boarding schools where speaking the language was forbidden,” said Coleman.
“I’m lucky my great-grandparents sat down with linguists to document the language and to create recordings so I can hear their voices and words. And now, to listen to my great-grandfather and know what he is saying, there’s something very personally satisfying about that.”
