Ph.d. in political science.

We are ranked as a top-ten research department and our graduate program has an excellent job placement record. Over the past decade, the vast majority of our PhD graduates have gone on to attain tenure-track positions, and many other students have become leaders in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

In addition to a demanding sequence of courses during the first two years, our graduates begin working with faculty from the very first day, to gain an appreciation of the challenges involved in producing innovative research.

This paves the way to their own intellectual development, the first major milestone of which is a solo-authored research paper to be presented to the department during their second year in the program. From that point on, until the completion of the dissertation in year five, the focus is primarily on independent and collaborative research.

Our graduate program is organized around subfields that address major theoretical questions about political life, encourage collaboration across intellectual boundaries, and place us at the frontiers of the discipline. As a graduate student here, you will become certified in two major fields and gain exposure to other fields through our graduate workshop series.

The Ph.D. Programme is governed by the Higher Education Ordinance, The University’s and the Faculty’s rules and regulations for third-cycle studies, and the General Syllabus.

Doctoral position

Our Ph.D. students are generally employed for four years. Up to 20 percent of doctoral employment can consist of departmental duties, and the employment is extended with the corresponding amount of time. This means that the total time of employment can be a maximum of five years. Periods of sick leave, parental leave, leave of absence and certain representative duties are exempt from the five-year maximum.

The doctoral salaries are fixed by local agreements at the University of Gothenburg and negotiated with union representatives.

For 2022/23, the starting salary is 28 050 SEK. The doctoral salary increases once the Ph.D. student completes 50, 80, and 100 percent of the Ph.D. programme. The maximum salary (after Ph.D. defense) is currently 34 500 SEK.

Ph.D. students at the University of Gothenburg are state employees and are thus entitled to several benefits and insurances. Read more about b enefits and insurances at the University of Gothenburg .

Supervision

Each Ph.D. student is assigned a main supervisor and an assistant supervisor. Supervisors are appointed in consultation between the Ph.D. student and the Director of Doctoral Studies. Prospective Ph.D. students do not need to contact potential supervisors before applying to the programme.

The dissertation

The dissertation can be written in the form of a compilation, which means several articles and/or papers preceded by an introductory chapter (“kappa”), or as a monograph (i.e. a cohesive book).

Ph.D. students are expected to present their work on several occasions during the Ph.D. Programme:

At the end of the first year of the programme, the Department organizes a prospectus presentation seminar, at which the first-year Ph.D. students present the first draft of their dissertation to the entire Department, and receive questions and feedback from discussants.

When a Ph.D. student has completed around 50 percent of the programme, they present a paper or chapter or their dissertation at one of the Department’s seminar series.

When a Ph.D. student has completed around 80 percent of the programme, they present two chapters (for monographs), or one paper and the introductory chapter (for compilations) of their dissertation at the Department’s General Research Seminar. Finally, Ph.D. students defend their dissertation at a public Ph.D. defense, where the dissertation is discussed with an opponent, and a grading committee decides whether it will receive a ”pass”.

International networks and contacts

The Ph.D. Programme offers great opportunities for establishing international contacts. For example, doctoral students can participate in research conferences and might also participate in research work at universities abroad.

Future careers

A doctorate in political science can lead to a research career within or outside academia, teaching at different levels within universities, or a career such as a social analyst in the public sector or in politics.

Job information, offer description.

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The University of Gothenburg (GU) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in collaboration announce up to two doctoral positions that will result in a double degree in Peace & Development Research and Political Science from the respective universities. The PhD candidates will spend the first 24 months at the School of Global Studies (SGS), University of Gothenburg, and the following 24 months at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, University of Amsterdam.

The School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, hosts several academic disciplines, including Peace and Development Research, Social Anthropology, Environmental Social Sciences and Human Rights. Peace and Development Research at SGS is a leading site of interdisciplinary enquiry. The research environment consists of ca 50 researchers using a broad range of approaches to investigate various themes in peace and development in different regions of the world. The Migration, Borders and Diversity research group consists of scholars representing the different disciplines at SGS.

The Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) unites all social science research of the UvA. The research program focuses on the functioning of contemporary societies and their interrelationships from historical, comparative and empirical perspectives. Cooperation across these disciplines is institutionalized in interdisciplinary centers. Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies is a multidisciplinary and interfaculty research center that focuses on international migration and the integration of immigrants and their descendants in host societies in a comparative perspective.

This announcement for a doctoral position is situated within an ongoing collaboration between migration scholars at the University of Gothenburg and the University of Amsterdam. Within the framework of this collaboration, the project ‘Streetregimes: How Street Level Norms Make the Global Migration Regime’, funded by the Research Council of the Netherlands, seeks to discover whether ‘street-level’ actors also have the power to change how national elites make immigration policies. The project investigates this question through a combination of descriptive quantitative research and rich qualitative study in South Africa and Mexico. The doctoral students recruited in this call will work on the latter part, conducting in-depth qualitative work in Mexico and/or South Africa.

Job assignments

The purpose of undertaking doctoral studies is to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for conducting independent research within the fields of Peace and Development Research and Political Science. The doctoral studies comprise one year of coursework and three years of research, culminating in the production of a dissertation that makes a significant and original contribution to the research field. The knowledge and skills that are acquired during the studies should be applicable to postdoctoral research or other professional work. The position is salaried and covers four years (full-time equivalent, fixed term). The first two years will be spent at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, and the following two years at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, University of Amsterdam. The doctoral candidate may undertake departmental duties corresponding to up to 20% of a full-time position, in which case the duration of the appointment will be extended accordingly. There are no tuition fees.

We particularly encourage applications from candidates who have:

  • experience in conducting rich qualitative interviews or ethnographic research
  • disciplinary training in political science, international relations, anthropology or human geography
  • knowledge of interdisciplinary research on migration and mobilities
  • fluency in Spanish or a South African national language (isiZulu, Khosa, Afrikaans etc.)

We are particularly motivated to promote a greater diversity in the study of migration politics and therefore encourage applicants from beyond OECD countries, with particular expertise from their region of study.

The PhD candidate will be tasked with contributing to the overall research project by publishing research articles in academic journals, and the dissertation should preferably be a compilation (article-based) thesis.

Starting date: 15 February, 2024.

Best Jobs for Graduates With a Political Science Degree

phd political science vacancies

The Balance / Emily Roberts

If you are intrigued by current events, want to shape public policy, and feel called to service, political science is worth considering as a major. But even if you don’t want to work in politics, political science can be a solid foundation for many careers.

Political science majors study how laws are made and the comparative structures of governments across the world. They learn how public policy is formulated and the impact of policy on the social and economic status of the populace. From a policy analyst or social media manager to a political campaign staffer, this type of education can put you on the path to a successful career in policy, consulting, law, media, and more.

Key Takeaways

  • Political science majors develop strong writing, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Graduates with a degree in political science can build their careers in the public sector, working for elected officials or government agencies, or in the private sector.
  • Political science job titles include policy analyst, legislative assistant, political consultant, social media manager, and market research analyst.

Career Choices for Political Science Majors

In addition to jobs in politics, there are many other career options to consider. Political science majors develop strong writing and research skills. They discover how to make a convincing argument and back it up with facts. Students of political science hone their presentation and verbal communication skills as they share their work with faculty and peers.

Political science majors refine their analytical skills while exploring policy initiatives and considering the ramifications of government actions. Critical thinking is vital to evaluating the platforms of political parties and the impact of leadership changes.

During their studies, political science majors learn how power is acquired, how campaigns are waged, and how public opinion can be influenced. They study different models of leadership and gain a historical perspective regarding the relative effectiveness of different approaches.

Your final decision about your major and career should consider your unique values, skills, personality traits, and interests.

If you choose political science as a major, you’ll have a wide variety of options open to you after graduation.

10 Job Options for Political Science Majors

1. policy analyst.

Since political science majors study the process of generating public policy, the role of the policy analyst is a natural application of their work as a student. Policy analysts rely on strong critical thinking, writing, and research skills as they formulate statements about the nature and impact of proposals for public policy.

Like political science majors, policy analysts must devise a sound thesis and build a persuasive argument for or against the adoption of a particular policy initiative. In addition, analysts use their understanding of the political and legislative process to enlist the support of individuals who can help advance initiatives.

2. Legislative Assistant

Senators, assembly members, representatives, and other elected officials at all levels of government hire assistants to help them carry out their duties. Legislative assistants tap into the writing and verbal skills developed by the political science major to coordinate communication with constituents and inform them about developments within their district.

They assess the interest of constituents regarding current political issues and present the views of their elected officials within a positive framework. Legislative assistants respond to constituent inquiries and help to resolve problems of citizens within their jurisdiction.

Legislative assistants research policy issues, track legislation, and survey the positions of other legislators on pending legislation. They prepare briefings for their legislator and other office staff.

3. Public Relations Specialist

Public relations representatives influence public opinion about their clients based largely on placing stories with the media. Political science majors develop the writing skills needed to draft compelling press releases and the persuasive skills to assert the benefits of covering a particular story. They also learn how opinions are formed, and the role of the media, as they research current events during their studies.

Public relations specialists often organize and publicize press conferences and other events to attract media attention and get the word out about their clients. Political science majors gain some insight into this process as they study the mechanics of organizing campaign events and public appearances by government representatives.

4. Social Media Manager

Public opinion is increasingly shaped by social media. Political candidates, officials, parties, and interest groups need social media managers to monitor the views of constituents about their administration and current issues.

Social media managers must understand various social media platforms and orchestrate campaigns to shape the perceptions of their users. Political science majors know how opinions are formed and influenced by various media and can be instrumental in formulating and implementing these plans.

5. Market Research Analyst

Market researchers analyze how consumers will respond to products or services, much like political science students assess the reactions of potential voters to candidates. Political science majors study the role of survey research and opinion polling in campaigning. The work of market researchers often involves surveying consumer reactions to potential or current products and services.

Market research analysts can tap into the knowledge of research standards that the political science major possesses when designing scientifically viable studies. They must present their findings to clients and co-workers and back up their recommendations with data.

6. Political Consultant

Political consultants use the knowledge of the political process gained by political science majors to devise strategies for candidates to influence voters and gain support in their campaigns for office. Political consultants help brand candidates and repair damaged images.

They attempt to influence media coverage of candidates by offering favorable stories and positive takes on the past performance of the candidate. These workers may survey potential voters to discern their reaction to a candidate and the basis of their opinion.

Political consultants may also work for public interest groups and help them formulate strategies for advancing their causes.

7. Attorney

Lawyers working for political figures, interest groups, and lobbying firms use the legal research skills developed by political science majors to research legislative and policy issues. They help draft and edit the language for bills and assess the legal precedents for pending legislation.

Attorneys formulate and deliver arguments on behalf of their clients and attempt to influence decision-makers about the merits of their stance. They use political savvy in other areas of the law as well. Lawyers select sympathetic jurors and frame their cases in favorable ways when there are controversial political issues related to trials.

Many attorneys work for governmental agencies, where the political science graduate’s knowledge of political structures is beneficial.

8. Intelligence Analyst

Intelligence analysts work for clandestine agencies of the government like the CIA and the National Security Agency. They tap the political science major's understanding of political groups to assess developments in volatile areas of the world. These analysts study groups that pose a threat to security and analyze patterns of leadership and popular support.

Intelligence analysts write reports with their findings and present briefings to agency leadership, as well as executive and legislative leaders and staff. In addition, knowledge of foreign languages used by potential terrorists helps analysts to investigate potential threats.

9. Political Campaign Staff

Political campaign staff members help to formulate and execute campaign strategy. They work toward building a brand or favorable public image for the candidate. Staffers leverage the analytical skills of the political science major to study current political issues and assess voter reactions to a candidate's platform.

They write press releases and help draft language for speeches. Political campaign staff help manage the candidate's social media imprint and organize events to gain exposure for candidates. They recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, as well as raise money to fund the campaign.

10. College-Student Leadership and Activities Director

Activities directors can apply knowledge of political science as they structure student elections and leadership programs. They help set standards for elections and monitor proceedings to make sure student rights are upheld.

College-student leadership and activities officers develop leadership training exercises and advise leaders about effective and ethical ways to exercise their authority. They oversee the use of financial resources and investigate irregularities in student-run clubs and programs. These workers mediate disputes between student leaders and ensure minority interests are reflected in budgets and activities.

A scientist, a leftist and a former Mexico City mayor. Who is Claudia Sheinbaum?

Who is Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s future first female president?

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Claudia Sheinbaum, who will be Mexico’s first woman leader in the nation’s more than 200 years of independence, captured the presidency by promising continuity.

The 61-year-old former Mexico City mayor and lifelong leftist ran a disciplined campaign capitalizing on her predecessor’s popularity before emerging victorious in Sunday’s vote, according to an official quick count. But with her victory now in hand, Mexicans will look to see how Sheinbaum, a very different personality from mentor and current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador , will assert herself.

While she hewed close to López Obrador politically and shares many of his ideas about the government’s role in addressing inequality, she is viewed as less combative and more data driven.

Image

Sheinbaum’s background is in science. She has a Ph.D. in energy engineering. Her brother is a physicist. In a 2023 interview with The Associated Press, Sheinbaum said, “I believe in science.”

Observers say that grounding showed itself in Sheinbaum’s actions as mayor during the COVID-19 pandemic, when her city of some 9 million people took a different approach from what López Obrador espoused at the national level.

While the federal government was downplaying the importance of coronavirus testing, Mexico City expanded its testing regimen. Sheinbaum set limits on businesses’ hours and capacity when the virus was rapidly spreading, even though López Obrador wanted to avoid any measures that would hurt the economy. And she publicly wore protective masks and urged social distancing while the president was still lunging into crowds.

Mexico’s persistently high levels of violence will be one of her most immediate challenges after she takes office Oct. 1. On the campaign trail she said little more than that she would expand the quasi-military National Guard created by López Obrador and continue his strategy of targeting social ills that make so many young Mexicans easy targets for cartel recruitment.

“Let it be clear, it doesn’t mean an iron fist, wars or authoritarianism,” Sheinbaum said of her approach to tackling criminal gangs, during her final campaign event. “We will promote a strategy of addressing the causes and continue moving toward zero impunity.”

Sheinbaum has praised López Obrador profusely and said little that the president hasn’t said himself. She blamed neoliberal economic policies for condemning millions to poverty, promised a strong welfare state and praised Mexico’s large state-owned oil company, Pemex, while also promising to emphasize clean energy.

“For me, being from the left has to do with that, with guaranteeing the minimum rights to all residents,” Sheinbaum told the AP last year.

Image

In contrast to López Obrador, who seemed to relish his highly public battles with other branches of the government and also the news media, Sheinbaum is expected by many observers to be less combative or at least more selective in picking her fights.

“It appears she’s going to go in a different direction,” said Ivonne Acuña Murillo, a political scientist at Iberoamerican University. “I don’t know how much.”

Sheinbaum will also be the first person from a Jewish background to lead the overwhelmingly Catholic country.
