phd courses in delhi

Per Semester Load Requirements

A normal full time load is 12 to 20 units for all PG students. Students who are on assistantship (and are earning the remuneration portion) shall be given a relaxation of upto 4 units in the normal full time load. A student may be permitted an overload of at most 4 units in a semester, with permission from the PG committee. The students who have completed the stipulated course requirements shall register for the thesis units in multiple of 4 units (i.e. 4, 8, 12 or 16). No overload shall be permitted in the thesis unit registration. Part time students may register for any number of units lesser than the normal full-time load.

Course Work Requirements

  • The requirement of the course work for a Ph.D. student is aimed at providing the basic academic preparation to carry out the research, and have sufficient breadth in the area. The minimum course requirement for a Ph.D. student is normally 32 units for students whose highest degree is a B.Tech. (or equivalent), and 16 for those who have an MTech (or equivalent). The PG committee may ask the students with insufficient background to do additional courses (in addition to 32/16 units). For detailed course of requirement refer PG Regulations Here.
  • In special cases, for students with advance standing by virtue of their academic preparedness and/or by virtue of their professional work experience, some of the course requirements may be waived. All such waivers shall be decided upon by the PG Committee and reported to the Senate.
  • The Ph.D. students are expected to finish their course requirements as per the timelines mentioned in PG Regulations Here.
  • Transfer of Credits for Courses done Outside: Students may be permitted to do academic work and courses in places of repute outside IIIT-Delhi. Based on their performance/quantum of work done and the content of the course, the PG committee may consider them equivalent to some course credits, and waive credit requirements for similar courses/projects within IIIT-Delhi. Institutions with which IIIT-Delhi has arrangements/MOU/student exchange programs, transfer of credits may also be permitted. Any such waivers/transfer is permitted only if the courses being considered have not been counted for any other degree/diploma requirement.
  • A Ph.D. student may be permitted to replace up to two courses done by him/her and in which he/she has obtained passing, but not good, grade. The replacement will be permitted as and when the request is made by the concerned student. In this case, the earlier course will be listed in the transcript as having been taken on “Audit”. He / She may also be permitted to do extra courses to improve the CGPA. All such permissions shall be granted by the PG committee upon requests from the students.

Teaching Requirements

One of the potential career options for the research students is academics. The Ph.D. program at IIIT-Delhi aims to develop suitable teaching skills among the research students through teaching requirements. Towards this, it requires all students on financial assistantship plan of the Institute are required to take part in the teaching activities. All Ph.D. students must be TA for at least two semesters to satisfy the teaching requirements for a Ph.D. degree. Students on research assistantship will also be required to complete this requirement, though they may be assigned lighter load each semester. The teaching requirement may be waived for part-time and/or sponsored candidates.

Thesis Requirements

All Ph.D. students irrespective of their entry category are expected to successfully complete a minimum of 56 units by thesis. In truly exceptional cases where the Ph.D. candidate is ready with a thesis before he/she has accumulated these credits, the PG committee can consider waiving off some of these units. For the purpose of grading in the thesis units registered, the progress in the thesis work shall be assessed by the thesis supervisor(s). For each semester, one S (if the performance is satisfactory) or one X (if the performance is not satisfactory) grade shall be awarded by the thesis supervisor(s). The thesis grades shall be submitted by the thesis supervisor(s) at the end of the semester.

Thesis supervisor and external co-supervisor

The thesis work shall be done under the guidance of the Ph.D. supervisor, who shall be a faculty member of the Institute. There may be multiple supervisors. Normally, a student is expected to decide the supervisor(s) by the start of the second semester but can defer it till the end of second semester .This will be done by informing the PG Committee through a form, which shall be signed by the supervisor(s). A student can change the supervisor later – for this a formal request will have to be submitted to PG Committee and has to be signed by the old as well as the new supervisor. A student may also have external co-supervisors for the thesis. Such external co-supervisor shall be approved by the PG Committee upon a request by the student, duly approved and forwarded by the supervisor(s). The request must be accompanied by the CV/Bio or sufficient information about the proposed external co-supervisor which will allow the PGC to evaluate the suitability. Normally, the external co-supervisor should be finalized before the comprehensive and the PGC should be informed by the adviser and the student about the same.

Thesis evaluation and defense

All Ph.D. theses will be evaluated by a panel of thesis examiners who are experts in that area, and the candidate will have to defend the thesis in front of this panel. The panel will consist of supervisor(s) of the student, and a minimum of three non-supervisor examiners, at most one of which can be from within the Institute. A thesis defense date will be fixed, after taking inputs from all examiners on the panel. The defense shall be open to all. At the end of the defense, the panel will deliberate and make an overall recommendation.

Phd program & requirements.

IIIT Delhi offers PhD programs in six disciplines:

  • » Computational Biology (CB)
  • » Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)
  • » Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE)
  • » Human Centered and Design (HCD) *
  • » Mathematics (Maths) please visit -->
  • » Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH)

Specific guidelines for these programs and relevant documents and forms are available  here .

The PhD program at IIIT-Delhi is focused towards research like any other PhD program - limited coursework to enhance the breadth and depth of a student, followed by focused research. Some of the key features of this program are:

  • » Being a focused program, it allows a motivated and hardworking student to finish in as early as 4 years, subject to fulfilling the degree requirements.
  • » Following the best practices in several universities around the world, fresh BTech graduates are encouraged to apply. Neither a master's degree nor GATE is mandatory for the application process.
  • » The institute provides attractive compensation – the stipend in the first two years is Rs.31,000 per month; 3rd & 4th year is Rs.35,000 per month.
  • » The institute provides support to present papers in national and international conferences.

Minimum Academic Performance Requirements

  • The minimum graduating CGPA is 7.5.
  • The minimum continuing CGPA is 7.0.
  • The minimum CGPA for continuing to get the scholarship component is 7.0.
  • His/her CGPA falls below 7.0.
  • If he/she in under warning and his/her performance is not improving in his/her academics/research/duties (research or teaching).
  • His/her SGPA is 7.0 or below in a first semester.
  • The students who are not allowed to continue in the PhD program may be permitted to transfer their registration to the MTech program provided they meet the conditions of continuing in the MTech program.

  • The requirement of the course work for a PhD student is aimed at providing the basic academic preparation to carry out the research, and have sufficient breadth in the area. The minimum course requirement for a PhD student is normally 32 units for students whose highest degree is a BTech (or equivalent), and 16 for those who have an MTech (or equivalent). The PG committee may ask the students with insufficient background to do additional courses (in addition to 32/16 units). For detailed course of requirement refer PG regulations
  • In special cases, for students with advance standing by virtue of their academic preparedness and/or by virtue of their professional work experience, some of the course requirements may be waived. All such waivers shall be decided upon by the PG Committee and reported to the Senate.
  • The PhD students are expected to finish their course requirements as per the timelines mentioned in PG Regulations.
  • A PhD student may be permitted to replace up to two courses done by him/her and in which he/she has obtained passing, but not good, grade.

The PhD program at IIIT-Delhi aims to develop suitable teaching skills among the research students through teaching requirements. Towards this, it requires all students on financial assistantship plan of the Institute are required to take part in the teaching activities. All PhD students must be TA for at least two semesters to satisfy the teaching requirements for a PhD degree. Students on research assistantship will also be required to complete this requirement, though they may be assigned lighter load each semester. The teaching requirement may be waived for part-time and/or sponsored candidates.

Thesis Requirements

  • All PhD students irrespective of their entry category are expected to successfully complete a minimum of 56 units by thesis. In truly exceptional cases where the PhD candidate is ready with a thesis before he/she has accumulated these credits, the PG committee can consider waiving off some of these units.
  • Thesis supervisor and external co-supervisor: The thesis work shall be done under the guidance of the PhD supervisor, who shall be a faculty member of the Institute.
  • Thesis evaluation and defense: All PhD theses will be evaluated by a panel of thesis examiners who are experts in that area, and the candidate will have to defend the thesis in front of this panel.

COAP Updates

Hostel accommodation, for pg/ph.d full time students only.

There is a severe hostel crunch in the campus due to which it is NOT possible to provide hostel accommodation to postgraduate (PG) students (including PhD).

However, the Institute strives to provide a hostel seat (normally on sharing basis only) on priority, if available, to admitted female students, students with special needs (SwD - Students with Disabilities, formally admitted as PwD) and foreign nationals.

Hence, it is to be noted that the offer of admission at IIT Delhi does not guarantee on-campus accommodation.

The best support, pertaining to accommodation, is in form of providing the contact information of some off-campus accommodation that may be available within walking distance of the campus.

Please note that these off-campus accommodations, if available, operate independent of IIT Delhi.

Further, while staying off-campus, there are provisions for making one of our on-campus messes available to students for food on monthly subscription basis.

For any query in this regard, you may contact [email protected], Tel. 011-26591784 .

Infrastructure of the department of mathematics is very cool and amazing. We get air conditioned classrooms and labs. Free wifi is enabled in the campus. Medical and sports facilities are present. Canteen offers tasty food.

Everything is good this university

University of Delhi has the biggest campus in Delhi or I must say Delhi . They have playgrounds, canteen and all are maintained well. Their playground are really big. A basketball adjacent to the football ground from one end and from the other end there is a volleyball court. All 3 can be played together. Beside college provides facilities such as swimming pool, a big hall and air-conditioned computer.

I feel good while giving you the review !

College infrastructure is so so beautiful. Classrooms have very comfortable benches. Cafeteria area is so beautiful, neat and clean ! Water dispensers are all clean . Cold water in summer and hot in winters

I gave cuet exam with subject pcb but for some dumbness i failed chemistry so can i get admission in du for bsc hons in zoology with english gt and biology.

There is a chance you might still be eligible for B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology in DU with a failed Chemistry score in CUET, but it depends on a few factors: Each program at DU might have a minimum marks requirement for each subject in CUET. You need to check the specific eligibility criteria for B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology at the colleges you're interested in on the Delhi University website. Even if you meet the minimum marks requirement, admission depends on the cut-offs for the program. Since you failed Chemistry, your overall CUET score might be lower, making it more challenging to secure a seat compared to students who scored well in all subjects. https://university.careers360.com/download/ebooks/all-about-cuet I hope it helps!

What should one do if their ews certificate is under process but Have to submit the document on csas portal of du? what should i submit

The most recommended approach is to directly contact the Delhi University Admissions office and explain your situation. Explain that your EWS certificate is under process and inquire about the possible alternatives for document submission on the CSAS portal. The admissions office might suggest uploading a copy of the application receipt you received for the EWS certificate, or they might provide an alternative document submission process. Some institutions might allow uploading a provisional EWS certificate issued by the competent authority while your main certificate is being processed. It is crucial to confirm with the DU admissions office if they accept such provisional documents before uploading one. If options 1 and 2 are not viable, you can still submit your application on the CSAS portal. In the designated section (if available) or as a separate document, clearly explain that your EWS certificate is under process and provide details like the expected issuance date (if known). https://www.careers360.com/university/university-of-delhi-delhi I hope it helps!

can i change my college after 1 year ? for eg i studied my ba in state university and can i join DU starting college again from 1st semester

It is generally not possible to directly join another university like Delhi University (DU) and start from the 1st semester after completing one year of a BA program in a different state university. Universities typically have limited flexibility for credit transfer between institutions. Even within the same university system, transferring a full year's worth of credits might be difficult. Course structures and curriculum might differ between universities. Your completed first year at the state university might not perfectly align with DU's BA program requirements. If both your state university and DU are affiliated to the same university grant commission (UGC) recognized university system, you might be able to explore an affiliation transfer process. This would allow you to continue your BA program under the new university (DU) but might still involve some credit evaluation and course adjustments.

Some universities allow students to apply for admission to a higher semester (like 2nd or 3rd) based on their previous academic performance and credit evaluation.  Explore DU's admission process to see if they offer such a program transfer option for students coming from other universities. If the above options aren't feasible, you could consider starting a fresh BA program at DU. This would involve applying for admission again and potentially losing the credits you earned in your first year at the state university. https://www.careers360.com/university/university-of-delhi-delhi I hope it helps!

PhD Psychology

Masters with 55% in Psychology and allied disciplines, with 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC (creamy layer) and Diferently Abled categories.

Eligibility

In keeping with the philosophy and central concerns for which the School of Human Studies stands, the doctoral programme in Psychosocial Studies too is guided by a vision. Its method is to retain ethical engagement with forms of life and cultural modes of being that are rendered invisible and voiceless by the dominant discourses and politico-social structures and processes. Moreover, a psychosocial framework of research is facilitated by a concern about relating to nuances of human subjectivity and an attempt to feel the psychic recesses, dilemmas, resilience, life choices and conflicts in the participant’s inner world. Guided by a critical perspective that constantly seeks to question both knowledge and power--questioning given structures within the discipline of psychology as also outside, historicizing/sociologizing knowledge, and orienting towards an inter-subjective world view within which affects, feelings and the phenomenological flow of life are received—the programme seeks to generate in the participants a nuanced sensibility to facilitate their clinical-critical, participatory and dialogical work.

In such research, the self of the researcher serves as an instrument through which processes of interpretation and meaning making are filtered, even as the momentum of work oscillates between recognition of self-reflexive moments (in the researcher and to an extent in also the participant) in which awareness of “sameness and otherness” leads to a deepening and broadening of human relatedness. Research in this mode welcomes the possible avenues through which the unknown (often preserved as the ‘excess’ and the ‘initially incomprehensible’ in the data) gradually unfolds in significance within the relational space between the researcher and the researched.

Serving life and its struggles, and focusing on qualitative work wherein sustained engagement is valued and the transformative potentials in the self of the researcher and researched are opened up, the doctoral programme will acquaint students with thinkers and researchers whose efforts are in line with the above objectives. It will also help to hone the skills of future practitioners to ask searching questions in clinical and cultural domains.

The aims of the programme are as follows:

  • To contribute to the rich and developing field of Psychosocial Studies through interdisciplinary research and writing.
  • To develop into writing from India and South Asia for developing psychosocial research.
  • To develop links between psychoanalysis and critical thinking relevant to India.
  • To develop links between clinical psychoanalysis and critical psychology.
  • To research marginalized lives and unexplored spaces of lived experience.
  • To use qualitative methods of enquiry that reclaim subjectivity along with critical textual analysis
  • To explore forms of listening to self and others.
  • To develop writing styles that foreground the intersubjective nature of psychosocial enquiry.

Nature of programme:  Interdisciplinary (drawing from psychoanalysis, clinical psychology, psychohistory, disability studies, sociology, political thought, anthropology, literature, cinema, arts and aesthetics, history and philosophy)

Every candidate would have to successfully complete at least five, 4-credit courses (i.e. 20 credits in all). A candidate must earn minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of B to fulfill the course work requirements.

Those candidates with an MPhil degree are normally exempted from course work but may be required to do courses where the MPhil courses do not connect to the nature and aims of the Psychosocial doctoral programme. The course work is normally of two semesters’ duration.

Each doctoral scholar isassigneda supervisor and a Research Advisory Committee (RAC). After course work, there will be six-monthly evaluations of progress in RAC meetings and presentations before the programme team.

Each scholar needs to publish a paper in a refereed journal and make presentations at two national or international conferences.

For more details, research regulations for all PhD programmes of AUD may be read at: (insert link)

Total Credits:  20 credits for taught courses and PhD thesis.

The total pool of courses on offer for PhD Psychology (Psycho-Social Studies) is the following:

  • Reading Texts: A Methodological Focus (4 Credits)

  • Produce knowledge that cuts across the divisions between disciplines.
  • Develop new bodies of psychological knowledge that are relevant to India.
