With “ Kalki 2898 AD ,” Telugu cinema filmmaker Nag Ashwin rifles through a century of sci-fi and fantasy extravaganzas to create a wildly uneven mashup of everything from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” to Marvel Comics movies, underpinned by elements from the Hindu epic poem “Mahabharata.” It’s billed, perhaps optimistically, as the first chapter of the Kalki Cinematic Universe franchise — which makes it part of a larger trend, since it launches the same weekend that Kevin Costner’s multi-film “Horizon” saga does in the U.S.

Bhairava (Telugu superstar Prabhas ), a roguish bounty hunter who rolls in a tricked-out faux Batmobile equipped with a robotic co-pilot, yearns to earn enough “credits” to buy his way into the Complex, where he can crash the best parties, ride horses through open fields and avoid all the debt collectors hounding him in Kasi. He seizes on the opportunity to make his dreams come true when a colossal reward is posted for the capture of SUM-80 (Deepika Padukone), an escapee from the Complex’s Project K lab, where pregnant women are routinely incinerated after being drained of fluids that can ensure Yaskin’s longevity.

While on the run through a desert wasteland, en route to the rebel enclave known as Shambala, SUM-80 is renamed Sumati by newfound allies and, more important, protected by the now-ancient Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan), who has evolved into an 8-foot-tall sage with superhuman strength, kinda-sorta like Obi-Wan Kenobi on steroids, and a sharp eye for any woman who might qualify as the Mother, the long-prophesized parent of — yes, you guessed it — Kalki.

Bhairava and his droid sidekick Bujji (voiced by Shambala Keerthy Suresh) follow in hot pursuit, and are in turn pursued by an army of storm troopers led by Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee), a cherubic-faced Yaskin factotum who always seems to be trying a shade too hard to exude intimidating, butch-level authority. Ashwatthama swats away the storm troopers and their flying vehicles like so many bothersome flies, and exerts only slightly more effort by warding off Bhairava and his high-tech weaponry. (Shoes that enable you to fly do qualify as weaponry, right?)

For his own part, Bhairava has a few magical powers of his own, though it’s never entirely clear what he can or cannot do with them. After a while, it’s tempting to simply assume that, in any given scene, the bounty hunter can do whatever the script requires him to do.

But never mind: He and Ashwatthama do their respective things excitingly well during the marathon of mortal combat that ensues when just about everybody (including Manas and his heavily armed goons) get ready to rumble in Shambala for the climactic clash.

All of which may make “Kalki 2898 AD” sound a great deal more coherent than it actually is. Truth to tell, this is a movie that can easily lead you at some point to just throw up your hands and go with the flow. Or enjoy the rollercoaster ride. And if this really is, as reported, the most expensive motion picture ever produced in India, at least it looks like every penny and more is right there up on the screen.

బేబీకి ఎదుర‌య్యే అడ్డంకుల‌ను వినోదాత్మ‌కంగా రాసుకున్నాడు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌. బేబీ చేసే ప‌నుల‌న్నీ రివ‌ర్స్ అయ్యి అత‌డి ఉద్యోగానికే ఎస‌రు ప‌డ‌టం ఫ‌న్నీగా అనిపిస్తుంది. బిర్యానీ సెంట‌ర్‌లో గొడ‌వ‌ను ఆప‌డానికి వెళ్లిన పోలీసుల‌ను అక్క‌డి ప్ర‌జ‌లే కాపాడ‌టం, కుక్క ఎపిసోడ్‌తో పాటు కొన్ని సీన్స్‌లోని కామెడీ వ‌ర్క‌వుట్ అయ్యింది.

డిపార్ట్‌మెంట‌ల్ టెస్ట్‌లో స్లిప్పులు పెట్ట‌డం అనే మెయిన్ కాన్‌ఫ్లిక్ట్ ను మాత్రం ఎఫెక్టివ్‌గా చూపించ‌లేక‌పోయాడు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌. ఆ పాయింట్ క‌న్వీన్సింగ్‌గా అనిపించ‌దు. బేబీతో పాటు అత‌డి కొడుకు ఎగ్జామ్స్‌లో స్లిప్స్ పెట్టే సీన్స్ చాలా వ‌ర‌కు కొరియ‌న్ భాష‌లో వ‌చ్చిన బ్యాడ్ జీనియ‌స్ అనే సినిమాను గుర్తుకుతెస్తాయి.

క్లైమాక్స్‌లో ట్విస్ట్‌...

బేబీ, శిబిన్‌ల మ‌ధ్య ఈగోకు కార‌ణ‌మైన ప‌రిస్థితుల్లో డెప్త్ మిస్స‌యింది. చివ‌ర‌కు శిబిన్‌పై బేబీ ఎలా విజ‌యం సాధించాడు? ఏఎస్ఐగా ప్ర‌మోష‌న్ ఏ విధంగా వ‌చ్చింద‌న్న‌ది చిన్న ట్విస్ట్‌తో చూపించారు. అదొక్క‌టి ప‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తుంది. రివేంజ్ అంశాలతో పాటు ఓ ఫ్యామిలీ డ్రామాను స‌మానంగా చూపిస్తూ క‌థ‌ను ముందుకు న‌డిపించారు. కానీ ఈ ఫ్యామిలీ సీన్స్ లో ఎమోష‌న్‌, సెంటిమెంట్ పాళ్లు త‌గ్గాయి.

బేబీ పాత్ర‌కు న్యాయం...

బేబీ పాత్ర‌లో బిజు మీన‌న్ పూర్తిగా న్యాయం చేశాడు. త‌న ప్ర‌మేయం లేకుండానే ఇబ్బందుల్లో ప‌డే కానిస్టేబుల్‌గా సెటిల్డ్ యాక్టింగ్‌తో కామెడీని పండించాడు. బేబీపై రివేంజ్ తీర్చుకునే పాత్ర‌లో షైన్ టామ్ చాకో విల‌నిజం స‌రిగ్గా వ‌ర్క‌వుట్ కాలేదు. క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ పైపైనే రాసుకున్న ఫీలింగ్ క‌లుగుతుంది. బేబీతో ప‌నిచేసే కానిస్టేబుల్స్‌లో గోకుల‌న్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ బ్యాక్ డ్రాప్ లో వ‌చ్చే కామెడీ ట్రాక్స్ న‌వ్విస్తాయి.

పేరుకే కామెడీ మూవీ...

తుండు పేరుకు కామెడీ సినిమానే అయినా న‌వ్వుల డోస్ మాత్రం త‌క్కువేన‌ని చెప్ప‌వ‌చ్చు. బిజు బీన‌న్ యాక్టింగ్ కోసం మూవీ చూడొచ్చు.

The world is a wasteland, dead bodies illuminated by covering the earth to the luridly lit horizon, drums thundering and voices rising in a choral tide; Kalki 2898 AD is massive from the word go. Enter Krishna, mounted on a chariot drawn by four suitably apocalyptic black horses, to curse the battle’s seemingly sole survivor, Ashwarthama, for the sin of shooting an unborn child. Like many of the characters blundering through Nag Ashwin ’s stupendous Telugu-language epic, the valiant Ashwarthama lacks a moral framework.

There is always someone claiming that the worst of times is now, of course; accordingly, in real life, there have been quite a few Kalki pretenders. And despite the date in the title, Kalki 2898 AD could be read as a series of allusions to current issues: its skein of plot lines includes a man-made climate crisis, femicide, the erasure of democratic freedoms and an obscene gulf between rich and poor. All that. Or, you can take it as a humungous space opera combining Indian mythology with bits and bobs from Star Wars , Mad Max , Blade Runner and The Handmaid’s Tale , whipping them together in a great cinematic froth. Take your pick. Either way, it is overwhelming. And this is just episode one.

Skip forward past the titles. Shazam, it’s 6,000 years since Ashwarthama stamped through that field of the dead. There is now just one city, Kashi, full of poverty-stricken grafters who scrabble at the gates of The Complex, the ultimate in gated estates – it is an inverted pyramid, so vast that the park on the flat roof includes an ocean – begging for the leaders’ indulgence.  These people would kill each other for an apple. 

Somewhere beyond the endless desert there is, however, a rebel settlement called Shambala, where the belief holds that a blessed mother will arrive one day to give birth to a savior who will set everything to rights. (What this film shows, above all, is how much myth is shared across cultures.) 

She duly arrives in the comely person of Sumathi ( Deepika Padukone ), under the protection of the now ancient Ashwarthama. In a plum bit of casting, he is played by 81-year-old Bollywood cinema legend Amitabh Bachchan , wearing the pain of millennia and looking very much like Gandalf. He even carries a magic staff that, like most of the props, is inclined to burst into flames. 

Of course, the monsters of The Complex are also on Samarthi’s tail, as is a battle-worn bounty hunter called Bhairava who hopes to sell her to The Complex. Bhairava is out for himself and the devil take the hindmost, but as played by the hugely popular pan-Indian star Prabhas , he is never less than likable, funny, impressively invincible and undeniably hot. Think Harrison Ford in Star Wars , with that cheeky grin; like Han Solo, Bhairava even has a sidekick robot. He may be a very naughty boy, but he has the heft of a hero in the making: watch this very large, very hectic space.

The designers of that space have, of course, had a field day. Like Kashi – or, indeed, like the world of Mad Max – Shambala is a mix of high-tech forcefields, knocked-together steampunk vehicles and medieval weaponry. There is a tremendous amount of spectacular fighting, often including flying; fist fights bring down entire buildings while leaving the combatants without a scratch. This is the art of the impossible, brought to us by CGI that, unlike many of its western equivalents, is given every chance to go large. Why try to disguise what you can celebrate? 

So this is how the world ends, not with a whimper but a great many massive bangs, battles and increasingly complicated alliances, betrayals and stirring songs. It is terrific, cathartic fun – and, given that Vishnu’s next avatar has apparently yet to be born, what is described in the marketing blurbs as the Kalki Cinematic Universe can be expected to rage, burn and rip-roar for a good few editions yet, leaving audiences happily flattened with exhaustion. What can I say? All power to that burning staff.

ఇదీ కథ: రమేశ్‌ (కున్‌చ‌కో బొబన్‌) ఓ కాలేజీలో ప్రొఫెసర్‌. కథలు రాయడం అతని హాబీ. ఎన్నో కలలతో వివాహ బంధంలోకి అడుగుపెడతాడు. తొలి రాత్రే ఊహించని ఘటనకు షాక్‌ అవుతాడు. తన భార్య స్మృతి (విన్సీ అలోషియస్‌).. ప్రేమించిన వ్యక్తితో వెళ్లిపోవడమే అందుకు కారణం. ఈ బాధలోంచి బయటకొచ్చిన రమేశ్‌కు రెండో వివాహం చేయాలని కుటుంబ సభ్యులు నిర్ణయిస్తారు. దానికి రమేశ్‌ కూడా అంగీకరించడంతో ‘రెండో’ పెళ్లి చూపులు మొదలుపెడతారు. ఓ అమ్మాయి తరఫు బంధువులు అధికారికంగా విడాకులు మంజూరైతేనే రమేశ్‌కు ఇచ్చి పెళ్లి చేస్తామనే షరతు పెడతారు. మరి, ఎక్కడికెళ్లిందో తెలియని భార్యను రమేశ్‌.. విడాకులు కోసం ఎలా వెతికిపట్టుకున్నాడు? ఈ క్రమంలో అతడికి ఎదురైన సవాళ్లేంటి? వకీల్‌ శ్రీదేవి (అపర్ణా బాలమురళీ) ఎలా సాయపడింది? అతడు రెండో వివాహం చేసుకున్నాడా, లేదా? అసలు పద్మిని ఎవరు? తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే (Padmini Review).

ఎలా ఉందంటే: కొంత డ్రామా, కొంత కామెడీ మిక్స్‌ అయిన కథ ఇది. మర్రిచెట్టు, కాకి ప్రధానాంశాలుగా తాను రాసుకున్న కథను హీరో తన భార్యకు వివరించే సీన్‌తో ప్రారంభమైన సినిమా సరదాగా సాగిపోతుంది. మంచి కవిత్వంలా వీరి వైవాహిక జీవితం ఉండబోతుందని ప్రేక్షకుడు అనుకునేలోపు స్మృతి తన భర్తకు హగ్‌తోపాటు ‘హ్యాండ్‌’ ఇచ్చి వెళ్లిపోతుంది. ఇది ఊహించని మలుపే అయినా.. హీరోని చుట్టుపక్కల వారు హేళన చేయడం, అందుకు అతడు బాధపడడంలాంటి సన్నివేశాలు ఊహకు తగినవే. హీరో రెండో పెళ్లికి ప్రయత్నాలు మొదలుపెట్టిన దగ్గర నుంచి కథ వేగంగా ముందుకెళ్తుంది. ఈ క్రమంలో తెరపైకి వచ్చే హీరో బావ పాత్ర, పరుపుల వ్యాపారి (సజిన్‌) పాత్ర కడుపుబ్బా నవ్విస్తాయి. సహోద్యోగిని ప్రేమించి, పెళ్లాడాలనుకున్న హీరో.. విడాకులు తీసుకుంటేనే అది జరుగుతుందని తెలుసుకుని షాక్‌కు గురికావడం ఆడియన్స్‌కు హాస్యం పంచుతుంది. ఇంటర్వెల్‌ సీన్‌ ద్వితీయార్ధంపై ఆసక్తి పెంచుతుంది. పెళ్లి చూపుల్లో భాగంగా వకీల్‌ శ్రీదేవికి పరిచయమైన రమేశ్‌.. తన విడాకుల కోసం ఆమెనే సాయంకోరడం కొత్తగా ఉంటుంది. రెండేళ్ల క్రితం వెళ్లిపోయిన అమ్మాయి కోసం ఈ ఇద్దరు అన్వేషించే క్రమం అంతగా మెప్పించదు. వీరిద్దరి ప్రయాణం సోసో అనిపించినా.. వీరికి స్మృతికి ఇచ్చే ట్విస్ట్‌ మాత్రం అదిరిపోతుంది. దాంతో, ‘పెనం మీద నుంచి పొయ్యిలో పడినట్లు’ అన్నట్టుగా మారుతుంది హీరో పరిస్థితి. రెండో వివాహమై అతడేం నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంటాడనే ఆసక్తి ప్రేక్షకుడికి కలుగుతుంది. ఏ చెట్టు దగ్గరైతే హీరోని తన భార్య వదిలేసి వెళ్లిపోయిందో అదే చెట్టు దగ్గర సాయంకోరడాన్ని చిత్రీకరించిన తీరు బాగుంది. ఊహించని క్లైమాక్స్‌ ఎదురవుతుంది (Padmini Review).

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: కున్‌చకో బొబన్‌ తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు సుపరిచితుడే. ‘నాయట్టు’, ‘2018’ వంటి చిత్రాలతో ఇక్కడి వారినీ మెప్పించారాయన. ఈ సినిమాలో.. లోపల బాధను పెట్టుకుని పైకి నవ్వుతూ కనిపించే రమేశ్‌ పాత్రలో ఒదిగిపోయారు. ఫ్యామిలీ కోర్టు వకీల్‌గా అపర్ణ బాలమురళీ అభినయం బాగుంది. సజిన్‌ కామెడీ టైమింగ్‌ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. మడోన్నా సెబాస్టియన్‌, మాళవిక మేనన్‌ కీలక పాత్రల్లో కనిపిస్తారు. పాత్ర నిడివి తక్కువే అయినా.. స్మృతిగా విన్సీ అలోషియస్‌ అలరిస్తారు. కథాగమనంలో వచ్చే పాటలు పెద్దగా ఆకట్టుకోకపోయినా నేపథ్య సంగీతం వినసొంపుగా ఉంది. విజువల్స్‌ బాగున్నాయి. దీపు ప్రదీప్‌ రాసిన విభిన్న కథను తెరకెక్కించడంలో దర్శకుడు సెన్నా హెగ్డే విజయం సాధించారు (Padmini Review).

A new horror film, Pindam, starring Sriram and Kushee Ravi, is now out in theatres. The makers promoted Pindam as the scariest film to date. Let’s see how the movie is.

Antony (Sriram), an accountant at a rice mill, buys a new house in Suklapet. He moves there along with his pregnant wife, Mary (Kushee Ravi), his mother, and two daughters, Sophie (Baby Leisha) and Tara (Baby Chaitra). Very soon, everyone in the family starts experiencing strange things. They believe that the house is haunted and attempt to vacate the house. Annamma (Demonologist) comes to their rescue. What happened next? What is the mystery behind the house? This forms part of the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Pindam gets it right as far as the backstory is concerned. The flashback portions are interesting and disturbing at the same time. The movie deals with an important social issue and the same has been conveyed effectively towards the end.

Sriram is pretty good in his role. As a person who gets worried about his family, the actor did a supreme job. Kushee Ravi fits the bill rightly as a housewife and is impressive. The background score and locations play a key role in a horror film, and Pindam is solid in these aspects.

The kids, Baby Chaitra and Baby Leisha are brilliant in their respective roles. Eswari Rao leaves her mark in an important character. The rest of the cast did what was expected of them.

Minus Points:

Pindam follows a regular narrative style in the horror genre, which we have been seeing for many years. A family entering a new house and experiencing a supernatural presence is beaten to death concept. That isn’t the main issue, but the narrative lacks any thrilling moments.

The first half isn’t engaging for the most part. There are a couple of interesting scenes, but they don’t last long. Instead, what we get to see are regular horror tropes like flickering lights, photo frames dropping from the walls, objects moving, etc. The jumpscares don’t land well and seem very artificial which is the biggest drawback of Pindam.

The movie has a striking resemblance to the Hollywood film Conjuring in many ways, and this also affects the viewing experience. The length is one more issue as the climax portions are dragged needlessly. Srinivas Avasarala’s character is not written well.

Technical Aspects:

Music director Krishna Saurabh Surampalli gave his best with the background score. The intriguing background score doesn’t make much impact, and that is mainly because of the writing issues. Sathish Manoharan’s cinematography is good.

The visuals and the production design set the mood needed for a horror film, but the choice to resort to age-old techniques to scare the viewers hampers the impact. Direction by Saikiran is promising in parts. It is good that he didn’t try to add unnecessary elements, but at the same time, the horror elements aren’t thrilling. Had he taken more care of the screenplay, the end result would have been way better.

On the whole, Pindam is a regular horror thriller with very few decent moments. The performances from the lead cast are good, and the movie is high on technical values. But the main issue is with the narrative, which is flat for the most part. The scary moments don’t make the desired impact, and the movie is stretched over the end. A few scenes and the backstory are effective, but the result is far from satisfactory.
