Research is cyclical in nature.

  • Stage 1:  Initially research is done to verify that there is enough written to support your initial topic.  The information at this stage helps to write your introduction and set the stage for coming research.
  • Stage 2:  Transitions from general information about the topic to problem-based research where you can identify the evidence needed to support your research questions and the literature review
  • Stage 3: Critically review the research done to this point and see if more is needed.

Additional Resources

  • Stage One - Introduction
  • Stage Two - Literature Review
  • Stage Three - Review & Revise
  • Library Resources

Stage One of the research process helps you verify need and the information that is needed to successfully write your introduction.

1.  Select a topic that has meaning for you.  Think of an issue or problem you wish to explore in more depth.

2. Use handbooks and encyclopedias along with textbooks to locate background information.  Answers: Who, What, When, Where.

  • Define terms
  • Find theories & theorists
  • Establish timelines
  • Track Trends
  • Identify major authors & researchers
  • List keywords and ideas

3. Clarify the purpose of your project (will become your thesis)

4. Select which databases best fit your topic and develop list of search terms

  • Use database thesauri to define terms
  • Test different combinations of search terms in database(s)
  • Expand synonym list for each of the main ideas
  • Don't forget to review recent theses and dissertations

Stage Two helps you focus on evidence derived from the research studies you have located.  Grouping the search results by research questions helps you organize the Literature Review.

1. Develop thesis.  If you think of the thesis as a problem to be explored, then the temptation to write "about" a topic can be kept in check.

2. Search for studies that align with your main ideas.

  • The articles may support or refute aspects of your thesis.
  • The articles should be published in peer-reviewed journals. Always get your instructor's permission to use websites, government documents, or study papers & reports.
  • Look for patterns of evidence.  It is a positive sign when the abstract begins, "This study..."

3. Identify the three or four research questions you want your research to answer in support of your thesis.  Focus your searching on these smaller questions and you will have more satisfactory results. Researchers often are looking for one of two things: A cause for a problem ( Why ) or a solution to a problem ( How ).

PICO is a model of research used in many professions to identify key research questions:

P = Population (participants, problem, process, point of view, primary event)

I = Intervention (therapy, treatment, causes or etiology, improvement, interpretation, impact)

C = Comparison (Opposing arguments)

O = Outcome (measurement)

Stage Three: Read and think critically to synthesize the collected body of research. Review your purpose, thesis statement, and research questions to see if they need to be modified based on your new understanding of the topic.

Modify and research again as needed to ensure that you have located all key studies related to your thesis.

If you have too many articles, then you may need to narrow your topic.  Are there specific populations or situations that you can use to focus your search?

If you need more research, think about your topic more broadly and look for related studies that may not "fit" exactly what you hope to do but support the development of your topic.

Use information ethically... carefully decide what to summarize, what to paraphrase, and what to quote.  Remember, only about 10% of the paper should be direct quotes.  Provide in-text citations or footnotes and a complete reference list for all content used that is not common knowledge.

If you have questions about your research process, contact your instructor or a librarian.

The best way to locate discipline databases is to use your Subject/Program Guide .

Also check out the following databases:

Content: Global student dissertations and literature reviews.

Purpose: Use for foundational research, to locate test instruments and data, and more.

Special Features: Search by advisor (chair), degree, degree level, or department. Includes a read-aloud feature

The ProQuest Dissertations & Theses database (PQDT) is the world's most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses. It is the database of record for graduate research, with over 2.3 million dissertations and theses included from around the world.

Content: Books, reference works, journal articles, and instructional videos on research methods and design.

Purpose: Use to learn more about qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research.

Special Features: Includes a methods map, project planner, and "which stats" test

UCR wins national award for redesigned alumni website

UC Riverside won a national award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE, for its marketing and communications outreach to alumni. University Relations won a silver CASE Circle of Excellence Award from the nonprofit association dedicated to educational advancement in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing, and advancement services. Its peer-selected and adjudicated awards honor colleges, universities, and schools worldwide for their work in educational advancement. The annual awards were announced in late June.  The department won in the marketing category for the September 2023 relaunch of its redesigned alumni website. The project involved a complete overhaul to make the website more navigable and engaging. It added features such as an alumni video header, concise content, and career resources organized by different life stages. Four months after the relaunch, the website’s overall engagement rate increased from 34% to 77%.

The redesign was overseen by Lisa Tyson, alumni communications manager, with website design by Johnny Lam, digital marketing manager; video content by Kristopher Vargas, video production manager; and other content by Brock Cavett, programming and career development director for alumni engagement. CASE judges noted that “it was a good, well-executed, and well-evaluated microsite with clear goals. Additionally, the microsite was packed with information, and the results for alumni engagement are impressive. Overall, this project shines from all directions.”

Yara Al Salman receives two national awards for research on group ownership

Dr. Yara Al Salman. Foto: Froukje Vernooij

Yara Al Salman , Associate Professor of Ethics and Political Philosophy at Utrecht University, receives both the Keetje Hodshon Award and the Legatium Stolpianum  for her PhD research ‘Sharing in Common: A Republican Defence of Group Ownership’.

Democratic group ownership

The concept group ownership can be found worldwide, from farmland to insurance funds. Yet, Al Salman observed, political philosophers have not written extensively about the subject. In her dissertation, she provides a theoretical framework to explore how democratic group ownership contributes to equitable power relations. She concludes that group ownership is often preferable to hierarchical corporate structures for a free and equal society.

Societal relevance

With her thesis, Al Salman managed to convince both juries. Besides Al Salman’s approach to the philosophical basis of group ownership, the Legatium Stolpianum jury also praised her thorough analysis, interdisciplinary approach, and positive vision of the future. “This dissertation truly outlines a better future for our societies,” jury member James McAllister says.

The jury of the Keetje Hodshon Award also recognises the societal relevance of Al Salman’s research, in which she shows that it can work to their advantage when people take responsibility together through group ownership. “With her dissertation, she makes an important contribution to the debate on how a society should be structured,” the jury report stated.

Yara Al Salman

Yara Al Salman has been an Associate Professor of Ethics and Political Philosophy since 2022. Prior to this, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher in Political Philosophy. Her research focuses on the political philosophy of property, commons, democracy, freedom, and domination. She obtained her doctorate in 2022 for her dissertation, for which she also received the two aforementioned awards.

Keetje Hodshon Award and The Legatum Stolpianum

The Keetje Hodshon Award, awarded by The Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW), aims to honour original research in the humanities. It is an incentive award for researchers who have not received their PhD no longer than four years prior to the award year. The prize includes an award of 12,500 euros.

The Legatum Stolpianum was established at Leiden University in 1753 by Jan Stolp (1671-1753), making it the oldest surviving Dutch academic prize. It is awarded every five years to recognise a PhD dissertation defended at a Dutch university, prominently featuring ethical and philosophical components.
