Curriculum & Coursework
Our programs are full-time degree programs which officially begin in August. Students are expected to complete their program in five years. Typically, the first two years are spent on coursework, at the end of which students take a field exam, and then another three years on dissertation research and writing.
The Marketing program draws on computer science, economics, behavioral science, and psychological methods to focus on marketing problems faced by the firm and its management. Through a combination of discipline- and field-based methods, the curriculum enables students to master concepts and research skills directly relevant to business problems. Candidates must come to understand the point of view of practicing managers and be able to bring theory and careful research to bear in illuminating important business problems.
The program requires a minimum of 13 semester-long doctoral courses. Students in the Marketing program are required to complete a year-long discipline sequence typically in microeconomics or psychology. They also complete courses in the areas of machine learning, computer science, statistics, research methods, academic field seminars, and two MBA elective curriculum courses. In addition to HBS courses, students often take courses at other Harvard Schools and MIT.
Research & Dissertation
Students in Marketing begin research in their first year typically by working with a faculty member. By their third and fourth years, most students are launched on a solid research and publication stream. The dissertation may take the form of three publishable papers or one longer dissertation.
Recent examples of doctoral thesis research include: The effects of brand extensions on the value of parent brands; Multi-method examination of the consumption of “knockoffs” of high status brands, and the counter-intuitive positive outcomes for consumer-brand relationships; Competitive analysis of pricing and quality decisions in industries with strictly complimentary products; The psychological effects of pricing, and how these affect consumers and firms; and "Choice amnesia," the motivated forgetting of difficult decisions.

According to national studies, more education translates not only to higher earnings, but also higher levels of job success and job satisfaction:
“Educational attainment – the number of years a person spends in school – strongly predicts adult earnings, and also predicts health and civic engagement. Moreover, individuals with higher levels of education appear to gain more knowledge and skills on the job than do those with lower levels of education and they are able, to some extent, to transfer what they learn across occupations.” - Education for Life and Work (2012), National Research Council of the National Academies, pg. 66.

Show Me the Money: Tech Salaries for Product, Sales, and Marketing Roles
Many marketing, sales, and product positions in the computer manufacturing industry pay a median salary well into the six-figure range. IT pros who are unhappy with a stagnating tech salary may want to consider transitioning into one of these roles.
The scale of the IT industry is truly enormous. Every year, companies and individual consumers spend over $5 trillion on computer hardware, software, and services. That’s bigger than the GDP of more than 180 countries.
To offer some additional perspective, in our article breaking down IT spending vs. other industries , we calculated that Americans spend 19x more on tech than they do on beer, 66x more than they do on pets, and 229x more than they do on bacon!
With so much cash flowing, how much of it goes into the pockets of the people who make, sell, and support the products we all rely on? Let’s explore median salaries in the tech industry, as the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported, for the workers who supply computer hardware that powers businesses everywhere.

Product roles and responsibilities.
$178,460 – Software Developers design computer applications or programs.
$167,600 – Computer Hardware Engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components.
$138,200 – Software Quality Assurance (QA) Analysts and Testers identify problems with applications or programs and report defects.
$104,830 – Technical Writers Prepare instruction manuals, how-to guides, journal articles, and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information.
Marketing and Sales Roles and Responsibilities
$218,130 – Sales Managers direct organizations’ sales teams.
$203,340 – Marketing Managers plan programs to generate interest in products or services, such as determining the demand for products and services offered by a firm and its competitors and identifying potential customers.
$146,880 – Sales Engineers sell complex scientific and technological products or services to businesses.
$135,150 – Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Technical and Scientific Products sell IT products to individuals or businesses.
$120,980 – Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists gather information to determine potential sales of a product or service, or plan a marketing or advertising campaign.
Support Roles and Responsibilities
If there’s one job on the vendor side of the IT industry that doesn’t pay especially well, it’s that of the Customer Service Representative (CSR). If earning a large paycheck is your primary goal, you should probably consider other roles.
$49,430 – Customer Service Representatives interact with customers to handle complaints, process orders, and answer questions.
