My deep commercial experience and copywriting expertise combine to give me the attributes needed to create compelling job-seeker collateral, ensuring skills and knowledge are captured and presented in the best way possible.

Finding vacancies

Writing a cv, writing a covering letter.

  • Preparing for an interview
  • Career advice

Your CV is often your first contact with a potential employer, so it should make a good impression and market your skills and experience in the best way possible.

Tips for writing a CV

  • Keep it short – about two pages
  • Explain any gaps, such as time spent on a career break
  • Put the most important information first
  • Tailor your CV to the role you’re applying for
  • Make sure it highlights the key skills employers are looking for
  • Give examples as evidence to back up your skills
  • Make sure it is accurate – lies on your CV can lead to dismissal
  • Proofread it carefully, and ask someone else to check it too

Formatting your CV

To make your CV easy to read, use:

  • clear section headings
  • a clear font that looks professional, no less than 10 point
  • consistent fonts, sizes and layout
  • bullet points

Layout and what to include

Contact details.

Use your name as the heading at the top of your CV.

List your contact details at the start of your CV. This should include your:

  • email address
  • postal address
  • phone numbers

You can put these details on one line to save space.

You should not include other personal information such as your age, date of birth, marital status or a photo.

If you have a disability, you do not have to tell employers about it, but you might decide to tell them so that they can make reasonable adjustments for you at an interview, or in the role if you’re successful. You can do this when you apply or at a later stage. There may be a benefit to disclosing your disability where firms are committed to equal opportunity policies.

Personal statement

You may want to include a short personal statement at the start of your CV. This should briefly summarise your background, skills and experience and the type of role you’re looking for.

Work experience

List your roles, with the most recent first. For each role you should include:

  • your job title
  • the name of the organisation
  • the dates you worked there
  • your main responsibilities
  • your achievements in the role

Make sure you highlight the skills and experience most relevant to the job you’re applying for.

You do not need to include your salary or the reason you left.

Education and qualifications

List your education and qualifications, with the most recent first. Include:

  • the type of qualification
  • your result, or expected result if you are still studying
  • the name of the school, college, university or other organisation
  • the dates you attended
  • a brief summary of the course and what you learned, such as the areas of law you studied

You can also include any professional memberships in this section.

If you’re at the start of your career you may wish to put the education section before the work experience section.

You can include a skills section covering:

  • IT skills, such as software packages that you’re familiar with
  • languages, particularly if they’re relevant to the role
  • any other specialist skills that are relevant

If you prefer, you can include your skills as part of the sections on work experience and education.

Interests and activities

You do not have to include your interests or hobbies on your CV. Think carefully about the impression they will give a potential employer. Only include interests that show you have skills the company is looking for, such as:

  • volunteering, particularly if it relates to your career
  • activities that show key skills such as team work
  • positions of responsibility that you have held outside work
  • interests that relate to the job

You do not need to list references on your CV. An offer of employment will usually be subject to receiving references, but you can wait until an employer asks for them, and this will normally be later in the process.

Check that your referees are willing before you provide their contact details.

According to the Solicitors Regulation Authority there were 219,424 solicitors employed as of October 2022, as quoted by The Lawyer Portal .

Of course, competition is high for the best roles, but as you’d expect, you’re likely to be well rewarded financially if you can make it. Solicitors featured in our recent list of the highest paying jobs in the UK .

Whether you’d like to be a lawyer, a paralegal, or involved with the profession in any other capacity, it all starts with a well-written law CV. Here are our top tips:

Legal CV dos and don’ts

For more general CV advice, here’s how to write a CV – our comprehensive guide .

Know your audience – keep the layout and formatting simple and effective. This is not an industry where a creative CV that breaks the conventional rules will do you many favours!

  • Write a strong personal statement outlining who you are, what you can offer and your career aims. Spend a good amount of time getting this part right – otherwise, the reader may not continue.
  • Describe your legal career experiences so far in precise detail, drawing attention to your achievements. Whether it was a full-time role or a law vacation scheme, sell yourself.
  • Succinctly describe any other work experience that could support your application. This could differentiate you from other candidates, as long as you can show how it’s relevant and makes you a stronger applicant.

Adopt a professional tone for your law CV and include all the other CV essentials.

Mention your education and qualifications, plus any key skills you can bring to the table. Some of your skills will be more relevant for the role than others, so tailor them to the job description .

  • Lie on a CV – as you probably know, that’s illegal
  • Add personal details such as age or marital status
  • Put your photo on a CV in the UK (if you’re applying for a role overseas then check the local requirements)
  • Mention your salary expectations
  • Include references – wait until later in the application process to provide them if you’re asked

Take great care not to use clichés or generalisations on your law CV. In the next section, we’ll explore how to describe your successes so far in specific detail.

Demonstrate your impact

Writing about the impact you have made since beginning your legal career can sometimes be tricky, particularly if you’ve only just left university.

Think about any experiences you can include that others are less likely to have – whether at a law firm, in pro bono work, during your studies or even from an extracurricular activity!

Include any relevant and impressive facts, figures or statistics you can to demonstrate your impact.

These numbers will have more impact in the right context. If you’re struggling to explain your best ones, use the STAR method:

  • Situation: Give some quick context
  • Task: Outline the problem to solve
  • Action: Explain how you tackled it in succinct detail
  • Result: Share the positive outcome, with figures if possible

If you need to use lots of words to explain your STAR example, go into more detail as part of your cover letter.

We always recommend providing one when you apply for a role, even if you’re not required to. It helps you express your motivation for the opportunity and gives you another chance to stand out from rival applicants – here are the basics of a cover letter .

General law CV advice

You’ve written all about your hard work, achievements and passion for the profession. Don’t undo all that great effort by making a rookie error.

It goes without saying, but you need exceptional attention to detail for a legal career.

Your CV should be a reflection of that, so check it comprehensively to spot any mistakes and fix them. Here are 10 mistakes that make your CV look unprofessional .

And remember – customise every CV to each firm you’re applying to, for example by using their job advert, website and any other relevant information you can get your hands on.

With this information, you may want to tailor your personal statement or emphasise certain aspects of your work to date.

Taking everything into account, here’s a legal CV example to help frame your thinking:

Legal CV example

Rose Rodriguez

[Address] – [Phone number] – [Email address]

Personal Statement

Use 6-7 lines to promote who you are, what you can offer and your career aims. Be concise and personalise it – show how you stand out and what makes you unique. For example:

Commercially-savvy and multilingual solicitor specialising in intellectual property law with 5 years’ client-facing experience. Proven track record of winning new work and cutting costs…

If your skill section looks strong, include it here – otherwise, put it after your work history section. Relate your skillset to the job description and use bullet points – for example:

  • Legal writing
  • Legal research
  • Problem-solving
  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Fluent in French

Work History

List your previous roles or companies worked at in reverse chronological order, starting with your current or most recent position – also include the dates.

Then, add bullet points, to describe your most relevant achievements or responsibilities, e.g.:

[Role, company] [Dates]

  • Helped secure 5 new contracts in the area of intellectual property rights worth £1m
  • Co-negotiated several contracts with suppliers to reduce our costs by 10%
  • Assisted with 50+ disputes relating to IP rights

Qualifications and Education

Include relevant details – such as your Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), Legal Practice Course (LPC) or undergraduate degree:

  • [Legal qualification(s) obtained] [Dates]
  • [University name, degree subject, grade] [Dates]
  • [School name, A-Levels, grades] [Dates]
  • [School name, GCSEs, grades] [Dates]

This section is optional if you’re short of space on your legal CV. Any interests you include should ideally strengthen your application in a relevant way – as an example:

University Law Society: I regularly took part in student-led moots to practise my argument forming and public speaking skills

It also includes 5 legal CV examples for inspiration.

The CV examples above show exactly how a Legal professional should present their skills and experience, in a well structured 2 page document.

This should give you a good idea of how to format your own CV, and the type of information you should be highlighting to recruiters and employees, in order to land interviews.

Legal CV structure & format

Recruiters are busy, and if they can’t find the information they’re looking for in a flash, it could be game over for your application.

You need to format and structure your CV in a way which allows the reader to pick out your key information with ease, even if they’re strapped for time.

It should be clear, easily legible, well-organised and scannable – check out some simple tips and tricks below:

CV structure

Formatting Tips

  • Length: Whether you’ve got one year or three decades of experience, your CV should never be more than two sides of A4. Recruiters are busy people who’re often juggling numerous roles and tasks, so they don’t have time to read lengthy applications. If you’re a recent graduate or don’t have much industry experience, one side of A4 is fine.
  • Readability: Columns, lists, bullet points, bold text and subtle colour can all help to aid the readability of your CV. Your overarching goal should be to make the content as easy to read and navigate as possible, whilst also aiming to make your key skills and achievements stand out.
  • Design: While it’s okay to add your own spin to your CV, avoid overdoing the design. If you go for something elaborate, you might end up frustrating recruiters who, above anything, value simplicity and clarity.
  • Avoid photos: Don’t add photos, images or profile pictures to your CV. Not only do they take up much-needed CV space, but they’re actually completely unnecessary and won’t boost your CV at all.

CV builder

Structuring your CV

When writing your CV , break up the content into the following key sections, to ensure it can be easily digested by busy recruiters and hiring managers:

  • Contact details – Always list these at the very top of your CV – you don’t want them to be missed!
  • Profile – An introductory paragraph, intended to grab recruiters attention and summarise your offering.
  • Work experience / career history – Working from your current role and working backwards, list your relevant work experience.
  • Education – Create a snappy summary of your education and qualifications.
  • Interest and hobbies – An optional section to document any hobbies that demonstrate transferable skills.

Now I’ll guide you through exactly what you should include in each CV section.

CV Contact Details

Contact details

Tuck your contact details into the corner of your CV, so that they don’t take up too much space.

Stick to the basic details, such as:

  • Mobile number
  • Email address – It should sound professional, such as your full name.
  • Location -Just write your rough location, rather than your full address.
  • LinkedIn profile or portfolio URL – If you include these, ensure they’re sleek, professional and up-to-date.

Legal CV Profile

Your CV profile (or personal statement , if you’re an entry-level applicant) provides a brief overview of your skills, abilities and suitability for a position.

It’s ideal for busy recruiters and hiring managers, who don’t want to waste time reading unsuitable applications.

Think of it as your personal sales pitch. You’ve got just a few lines to sell yourself and prove you’re a great match for the job – make it count!

CV profile

Tips for creating an impactful CV profile:

  • Keep it brief: Aim for a short, snappy paragraph of 3-5 lines. This is just enough room to showcase why you’d make the perfect hire, without going into excessive detail and overwhelming busy recruiters.
  • Tailor it: The biggest CV mistake? A generic, mass-produced document which is sent out to tens of employers. If you want to land an interview, you need to tailor your CV profile (and your application as a whole) to the specific roles you’re applying for. So, before you start writing, remember to read over those job descriptions and make a list of the skills, knowledge and experience the employers are looking for.
  • Don’t add an objective: Want to talk about your career goals and objectives? While the profile may seem like a good space to do so, they’re actually much better suited to your cover letter .
  • Avoid cliches: Focus on fact, not fluff. Phrases like “Committed and enthusiastic thought-leader” and “Dynamic problem solver” might sound fancy, but they’ll do nothing for your application. Not only do they sound cheesy, but they have no substance – stick to real skills and facts

What to include in your Legal CV profile?

  • Summary of experience: Demonstrate your suitability for your target jobs by giving a high level summary of your previous work experience, including the industries you have worked in, types of employer, and the type of roles you have previous experience of.
  • Relevant skills: Highlight your skills which are most relevant to Legal jobs, to ensure that recruiters see your most in-demand skills as soon as they open your CV.
  • Essential qualifications: If you have any qualifications which are highly relevant to Legal jobs, then highlight them in your profile so that employers do not miss them.

Quick tip: Your CV is your first impression on recruiters, so it’s vital to avoid spelling and grammar mistakes if you want to appear professional. Use our quick-and-easy CV Builder to add pre-written content that has been crafted by recruitment experts.

Core skills section

Underneath your profile, create a core skills section to make your most relevant skills jump off the page at readers.

It should be made up of 2-3 columns of bullet points of your relevant skills.

Before you do this, look over the job description and make a list of any specific skills, specialisms or knowledge required.

Then, make sure to use your findings in your list. This will paint you as the perfect match for the role.

CV core skills

Work experience/Career history

Now it’s time to get stuck into your work experience, which should make up the bulk of your CV.

Begin with your current (or most recent) job, and work your way backwards.

If you’ve got too much experience to fit onto two pages, prioritise space for your most recent and relevant roles.

Work experience

Structuring your roles

Recruiters will be keen to gain a better idea of where you’ve worked and how you apply your skill-set in the workplace.

However, if they’re faced with huge, hard-to-read paragraphs, they may just gloss over it and move onto the next application.

To avoid this, use the simple 3-step role structure, as shown below:

Role descriptions

Begin with a summary of your role, detailing what the purpose of your job was, who you reported to and what size of team you were part of (or led).

“Providing legal, trial and administrative support for team of 9 attorneys and 2 senior partners within a busy family law practice; reporting to the Lead Attorney.”

Key responsibilities

Next, write up a punchy list of your daily duties and responsibilities, using bullet points.

Wherever you can, point out how you put your hard skills and knowledge to use – especially skills which are applicable to your target role.

  • Reviewing all legal documents to ensure they are correct and contain all necessary paperwork prior to submission to court
  • Client management, maintaining key account relationships
  • Managing a small team of  paralegals  and monitoring progression

Key achievements

Lastly, add impact by highlight 1-3 key achievements  that you made within the role.

Struggling to think of an achievement? If it had a positive impact on your company, it counts.

For example, you might increased company profits, improved processes, or something simpler, such as going above and beyond to solve a customer’s problem.

  • Liaised with senior lawyers to implement new data procedures, reducing data process time by 50%.
  • Assisted the Compliance and Legal Affairs team with the implementation of a new complaint handling system which reduced departmental spend by 15% annually.

Next up, you should list your education and qualifications.

This can include your formal qualifications (a degree, A-Levels and GCSEs), as well as sector-specific Legal qualifications and/or training.

While school leavers and recent grads should include a lot of detail here to make up for the lack of work experience, experienced candidates may benefit from a shorter education section, as your work experience section will be more important to recruiters.

Interests and hobbies

Although this is an optional section, it can be useful if your hobbies and interests will add further depth to your CV.

Interests which are related to the sector you are applying to, or which show transferable skills like leadership or teamwork, can worth listing.

On the other hand, generic hobbies like “going out with friends” won’t add any value to your application, so are best left off your CV.

Essential skills for your Legal CV

Tailoring your CV to the roles you are applying for is key to success, so make sure to read through the job descriptions and tailor your skills accordingly.

However, commonly desired Legal skills include:

Legal Knowledge – The law serves many purposes and understanding how law works in different scenarios will help you do every job in hand.

Responsibility – Meeting clients from different backgrounds is an everyday responsibility for a lawyer and many other jobs in law. You will need to be able to write clearly, listen to your clients’ needs and negotiate settlements which are important to your law firm.

Critical Thinking – Reviewing important sources and case studies is part of the job. You need strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail to understand what every document is really saying.

Calculating costs – You may need to read technical documents in order to prepare estimates and Identify factors that impact on costs.

Commercial Awareness – All law firms are businesses and you will need to understand how businesses generally work so that you can offer insight into profit, timesheets and much more.

Writing your Legal CV

When putting together your Legal CV, there are a few key points to remember.

Always tailor your CV to the target role, even if it means creating several versions for different roles.

Additionally, remember that the structure and format of your CV needs just as much attention as the content.

Remember to triple-check for spelling and grammar errors before hitting send. If you’re unsure, try using our quick-and-easy CV Builder for a quick and easy approach.

Good luck with your job search!

6. legal cvs and covering letters.

Despite the widespread use of application forms, the CV is still a vital tool in the recruitment process. This Step guides you through the process of constructing a legal CV and writing a successful covering letter.

Updated Resource Book coming soon

Writing Legal CVs and Covering Letters

The curriculum vitae (CV) is the traditional method of application and is widely used throughout the legal profession. You will still need a CV, even if you are applying to organisations that use application forms, for two main reasons.

  • The information on your CV forms the basis of many of the answers you will need to give on application forms
  • Having an up-to-date law CV is useful when applying for work experience or to give information to a useful contact.

Before you start drafting

Think about the type of organisation or specific organisation you are applying to. What are they likely to be looking for in a candidate? See your work from Step 1 and 4.

Know what skills and experience you have to offer a prospective employer. See your work from Step 2.

Know what you want to use the CV for. Is it to apply for work experience or a speculative application? See your work from Step 2 and 3.

Tips for a good law CV

  • Target your legal CV – you need to adapt your CV to each individual recruiter so that they are able to see how you could fit in with their organisation.
  • Length – keep it to no more than two sides of A4 paper.
  • Make it easy to read – create a clear structure, leave enough white space and make use of formatting like headings.
  • Look professional – use plain white paper, a size 11 standard font like Arial or Calibri, and avoid photos and exclamation marks.
  • Correct spelling and grammar is essential – don’t rely on spellcheck; proofread several times to make sure your CV is error free.
  • Be honest whilst ensuring you are making the most of what you have to offer.
  • Focus on your cover letter as much as your CV.

Legal CV structure and layout

There is no single correct way to lay out a law CV and you will have to try different structures to see which one works best for you.

A traditional structure contains the following information:

Personal details

Include your name and contact details such as address, email address and phone number as a heading. You don’t need to put the words ‘Curriculum Vitae’ on your CV.

Education and training

Arrange your education in reverse chronological order, with your most recent example displayed first. Include the name of the institution, subjects, dates and your grades. Detail any professional legal qualification you have such as the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) . Don’t forget to mention the areas of law that you studied and state your dissertation title if relevant.

Employment and work experience

Depending on how much experience you have, you might want to separate out and highlight any legal, commercial or voluntary experience. Describe your key tasks and responsibilities, mentioning the positive results of your actions. Apply your law work experience to demonstrate your passion and part-time or voluntary work to show your transferable skills such as teamwork and communication.

Additional skills

A brief mention of other relevant skills you have such as the languages you speak, a proficiency in software packages or technical skills such as programming languages.

Extracurricular activities

Mention things you do outside of work and the classroom such as sports and clubs. Experiences such as membership in the Law Society or starting a new club at the University will help you stand out.

Stating ‘references available on request’ will usually suffice.

Legal Covering letter tips

  • Aim for a professional and personable tone
  • Fonts and formatting – maximum of one side of white A4 paper, with the same font as your legal CV. Proofread carefully to avoid spelling and grammar mistakes.
  • Find out who you are addressing – find out the name of the recipient if possible and sign off ‘Yours sincerely’. Try to avoid using Dear Sir or Madam, but if you do remember to use ‘Yours faithfully’ instead.
  • Signing off – be polite, say thank you and that you look forward to hearing from them.

Legal Covering letter structure and layout

The purpose of your application.

Talk about the opportunity you are applying for and where you saw it.

Why are you applying to them?

Explain why you are interested in their organisation.

Why should they pick you?

Explain what you have to offer that is relevant to them and the opportunity. This could be your performance on your degree, recent work experience with a similar organisation or experience in their area of practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m making speculative applications. who do i address the covering letter to.

Call the firm you’re targeting, explain that you’d like to send your CV in as a speculative application and ask who to best address the letter to.

If you’re unable to get a specific name, use “Dear Sir/Madam” and you’ll need to sign off as “Yours faithfully”.

I spoke to someone at a law fair recently. Should I mention this in my cover letter?

Definitely mention that you spoke to a representative from the organisation, and give the name of the event. This is evidence to back up your interest in the organisation and shows that you have done your research.

It is a useful tip to write down the name of whoever you speak to as soon as possible. Usually exhibitors wear name badges but if not, politely ask if you can take their name at the end of your discussion.

I have a substantial previous career. Is it important to fit it all on 2 sides of A4?

It is important to keep to the two page limit, so you will need to work out a way of cutting down the content without losing your key selling points.

Formatting your legal CV to meet the role expectations

  • Use the reverse chronological order to showcase your experience, starting with your most recent role;
  • Include your contact details (email address, phone number, and location) - and potentially your professional photo - in the header;
  • Must-have CV sections include summary or objective, experience, education, and skills: curate the ones that fit your profile;
  • Your professional legal CV should be between one-to-two pages long: select the longer format if you have more experience.

A little bit more about your actual CV design, ensure you're using:

  • plenty of serif or sans serif font (e.g. Montserrat, Exo 2, Volkhov) as they are Applicant Tracker System (ATS) compliant. Avoid the likes of Arial and Times New Roman because most candidates' CVs are in this typography.

When submitting your CV, are you still not sure what format it should be? Despite the myth that has been circling around , most modern ATS systems are perfectly capable of reading PDFs. This format is an excellent choice as it keeps all of your information intact.

Use bold or italics sparingly to draw attention to key points, such as job titles, company names, or significant achievements. Overusing these formatting options can dilute their impact.

The top sections on a legal CV

  • Contact Information to quickly reach the candidate.
  • Professional Summary showcasing legal expertise.

  • Highlight your qualifications, ensuring that you include your degree in law, any legal practice courses or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) that you have completed, as well as your solicitor or barrister accreditation status.
  • Showcase your specialisation by mentioning specific areas of law you have experience in, such as commercial, property, or family law, to demonstrate your expertise and niche within the legal industry.
  • Include legal-specific skills such as proficiency in legal research platforms, familiarity with case management software, and the ability to draft and review legal documentation, indicating your preparedness for the technical aspects of legal work.
  • Provide examples of your ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion, as this is crucial in the practice of law and will reassure employers of your professional integrity and trustworthiness.

Writing your CV without professional experience for your first job or when switching industries

There comes a day, when applying for a job, you happen to have no relevant experience, whatsoever. Yet, you're keen on putting your name in the hat. What should you do? Candidates who part-time experience , internships, and volunteer work.

  • Promotions on CV: Where to Include Them?
  • How to Address Employment Gaps on Your CV (With Templates for 2023)

If applicable, briefly mention a situation where things didn’t go as planned and what you learned from it, demonstrating your ability to learn and adapt.

Mix and match hard and soft skills across your legal CV

Your skill set play an equally valid role as your experience to your application. That is because recruiters are looking for both:

  • hard skills or your aptitude in applying particular technologies
  • soft skills or your ability to work in a team using your personal skills , e.g. leadership, time management, etc.

Are you wondering how you should include both hard and soft skills across your legal CV? Use the:

  • skills section to list between ten and twelve technologies that are part of the job requirement (and that you're capable to use);
  • strengths and achievements section to detail how you've used particular hard and soft skills that led to great results for you at work;
  • summary or objective to spotlight up to three skills that are crucial for the role and how they've helped you optimise your work processes.

One final note - when writing about the skills you have, make sure to match them exactly as they are written in the job ad. Take this precautionary measure to ensure your CV passes the Applicant Tracker System (ATS) assessment.

Please be aware that this is an example. Use it as a template to help generate ideas and structure your own CV but avoid copying and pasting. Your own CV needs to be original and tailored to the job you're applying for.

When applying for a training contract or a position as a solicitor you'll need to:

  • write as clearly and concisely as you can. Recruiters often have a large number of applications to work through and want to identify the salient points as quickly as possible
  • keep the length to two sides of A4. You want to highlight what you can offer in the CV not give every last detail. You can always give further information at interview if asked
  • show your best grades, wherever possible, and place your academic results at the top of your CV
  • highlight relevant legal experience
  • demonstrate that you're active and involved with extra-curricular activities. Legal recruiters like to see that you have interests outside of the law so round up your CV with a list of additional achievements.

Remember that law is a conservative profession, so your CV should reflect that. Including photos, using colours or unusual fonts is not recommended.

UK election latest: New cabinet in place - but 'shock' as PM Keir Starmer snubs senior figure

Sir Keir Starmer has named the bulk of his cabinet, with Rachel Reeves the first female chancellor. Rishi Sunak said "sorry" to voters as he resigned as Tory leader. His party endured a torrid election night, with the Lib Dems (71 seats) and Reform (five seats) making big strides.

Live reporting by Samuel Osborne, Mark Wyatt, Emily Mee and Bhvishya Patel

The historic nature of the general election results has largely focused on the seismic reversal of the previous Tory majority and the magnitude of the Labour landslide.

But amid discussion of those headline developments, the new governing party recorded a less heralded milestone in Earley and Woodley in Berkshire, a constituency being contested for the first time after boundary changes.

There, Yuan Yang claimed a narrow victory for Labour over the Conservatives' Pauline Jorgensen - in the process becoming the first Chinese-born candidate to be elected to British parliament.

Previously she has been a journalist for the Financial Times.

England manager Gareth Southgate has wished new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer well .

Asked if he had any advice for the new PM, Southgate replied: "Well, I'm not envious of his job. No, I don't have any advice.

"I think when you're in a position of responsibility, as I am, you realise that advice comes from every direction.

"Everybody has a simple solution to complex problems, so I'm sure he's going to be inundated with that sort of feel.

"Yeah, having been in the role I have, the one thing I would do is not be offering any additional issues for him by speaking publicly about anything, so I wish him well.

"We want a strong country. We all want the best possible conditions in the UK and whoever is in charge, whichever government is in charge, that's what we all desire."

So, the UK has yet another new prime minister - the fifth since David Cameron resigned in 2016.

But this election has not only delivered a new PM, it has also put a different party in power.

It is the biggest change in the UK political landscape since 2010.

If you are not British - and find the whole thing a little confusing - we have put together the following explainer...

Former defence secretary Ben Wallace has tweeted his congratulations to Labour's John Healey, who has taken up the role.

Mr Healey had served as shadow defence secretary since 2020, while Mr Wallace was defence secretary between 2019 and 2023.

Mr Wallace said he wished his former opposition well, adding: "We agreed on much in my time."

Sir Keir Starmer took the keys to Downing Street yesterday after voters handed Labour a landslide victory in the General Election.

While timings might change, here is a look at the new PM's next few days in power...

The new cabinet will meet for the first time this morning.

Appointments of junior ministers are likely to continue, as will calls from world leaders and first ministers of the devolved nations.

Legislative priorities and the timing of any major policy announcements will also need to be worked out.

Sir Keir has signalled that at least three housing announcements could be made in the first two weeks of a Labour government.

The new parliament will be summoned to meet.

The first business will be to choose a Commons Speaker - with Sir Lindsay Hoyle set to be re-elected.

Congratulating the Speaker will be Sir Keir's first opportunity to speak at the despatch box as prime minister and he will likely offer some rhetoric on the future.

Swearing-in could begin on the same day or the next and will continue for several days.

MPs and peers will take the oath, with the government going first, followed by some other established figures.

MPs are not allowed to speak in debates, vote or receive their salary until they make an oath or solemn affirmation of allegiance to the Crown.

The King will preside over the pageantry of the state opening of parliament, marking the formal start of the new parliamentary session at the Palace of Westminster.

A key component of the ceremony is the King's Speech, where he sets out the government's legislative programme for the coming session.

The UK is hosting a gathering of the European Political Community, the body that brings all 27 EU member countries together with 20 others from outside the bloc.

Sir Keir will welcome about 50 heads of government to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, giving him an opportunity to set the tone for his government's approach to the UK's relationship with the EU.

If you didn't manage to stay up, we've collected the key moments from a dramatic election night in the video below.

They include the first result to be declared, the first Tory to lose to a Labour candidate, and the cabinet ministers who lost their seats.

Plus Rishi Sunak's admission of defeat, and Sir Keir Starmer's victory speech.

Watch it all unfold below...

Politics is showbusiness for ugly people - according to the crude and perhaps unfair saying by American political consultant Paul Begala.

However, occasionally famous faces from the world of entertainment and sport do cross over into the ruthless, back-stabbing world of politics.

Sometimes they are hugely successful - just look at the case of the late US actor Ronald Reagan or former Pakistani cricket star Imran Khan, who both ended up running their respective countries.

In the UK, former actress Glenda Jackson, ex-GMTV presenter Esther McVey and Olympic gold medallist Sebastian Coe are among those who have switched careers in the spotlight to become MPs.

However, this time around, the story was mostly one of failure for the celebrities - and sort-of celebrities - who ran in the 2024 UK general election...

US secretary of state Antony Blinken has held a call with the UK's new Foreign Secretary David Lammy this evening.

During the call, the US official congratulated Mr Lammy for his appointment, spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

Mr Miller said: "The pair emphasised the enduring and essential importance of the US-UK special relationship in addressing the most pressing global challenges, including reaching an immediate and enduring ceasefire in Gaza, and supporting Ukraine against Russia's brutal aggression.

"The secretary noted that he looks forward to welcoming the foreign secretary to the NATO summit in Washington next week."

Labour MP Jess Phillips is back with Beth and Ruth to un-pick the election results.

On this episode they discuss how Jess was heckled when she narrowly held her seat of Birmingham Yardley.

They also look at the wider Labour results and talk about Rishi Sunak’s resignation speech, as well as discussing why Reform and the Liberal Democrats took seats from the two main parties.

Sir Keir Starmer and Irish premier Simon Harris have committed to reset and strengthen Anglo-Irish relations "with urgency and ambition".

The taoiseach "warmly congratulated" Sir Keir on his appointment as prime minister and said he looked forward to a "close and constructive" working relationship.

He also accepted an invite to visit Downing Street on 17 July.

"The taoiseach and the prime minister spoke of their shared determination to reset and strengthen the bilateral relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom and to set about that task with urgency and ambition," a statement said.

"They discussed Northern Ireland, welcoming the restoration of the institutions, including the full operation of North-South and East-West Good Friday Agreement institutions, as well as legacy issues."

Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly also spoke to Sir Keir by phone and congratulated him.
