Career Preparation

General career preparation tips.

  • Start by building your Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume and update these documents at least once per semester. See below for examples and templates.
  • Identify any skills gaps you might have and work on gaining additional experience and skill development through volunteering, internships, coursework, and other opportunities.
  • Work on developing your own templates for additional job application materials such as a basic cover letter that you can adapt for each application, writing samples, teaching or research statements, and sample syllabi.
  • Take advantage of opportunities to present your work or speak to different audiences, do a mock interview at the career center, or see if you can set up a teaching demo in your department.
  • Audit your online presence - what do people see if they search for you on Google? Is your LinkedIn profile up to date and error free? How are your privacy settings set up on your Facebook account?

Big 12 Media Days 2024 schedule, storylines to watch

James parks | jul 9, 2024.

Big 12 Media Days are here to kick off the 2024 football season, with plenty of storylines and rankings ahead of the event in Las Vegas.

College football's Talkin' Season is here, and with a historic 2024 season fast approaching, Big 12 coaches and players are set to appear in Las Vegas for the newly-expanded conference's Media Days this week.

Media members have already released their Big 12 All-Conference Preseason Team and the annual projected order of finish and football power rankings for the 2024 campaign, and judging by the close vote, we should expect this to be one of college football's more competitive conferences.

And for the second straight season, the Big 12 is undergoing some notable expansion. Helping pick apart the old Pac-12, the conference brings in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Arizona State to help compensate for the historic loss of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC this year.

Here's what you need to know as Big 12 Media Days gets underway, with a preview of the full schedule and a look at the preseason football rankings.

Big 12 Media Days 2024 schedule, storylines

Wed., July 10

Big money questions

Rumors circulated this offseason that the Big 12 may consider a name change to the conference as part of a prospective sponsorship deal that would bring the league more revenue.

Insiders speculate such a deal would bring the Big 12 around $50 million per year in new money.

And news of the Big 12's interest in a corporate sponsor comes as it was revealed the league is also reportedly exploring a potential investment from a European private equity fund that could bring the conference up to $1 billion in exchange for a 15 to 20 percent stake in the operation, per reports.

Official remarks from the Big 12 on these subjects have been sparse, but it's likely that commissioner Brett Yormark will face questions on these topics.

Utah is the favorite

Boasting arguably the expanded Big 12's premier overall roster, the Utes are poised to make a run at the league title in their debut season. Media members gave Utah 20 first-place votes in the preseason rankings and the team, coming off two Pac-12 titles in the last three years, is loaded.

Cameron Rising returns to the quarterback position after missing last season with a knee injury, and he'll be joined by star tight end Brant Kuithe. Those two combined with transfer receiver Dorian Singer, make Utah a contender for the Big 12 and the expanded College Football Playoff.

Don't overlook Kansas State

The Wildcats fell one vote shy of tying Utah at first-place in the preseason media rankings, based on the strength of a program that has won 19 games under head coach Chris Klieman the last two years.

Will Howard is gone, transferred to Ohio State, but the quarterback position looks stable with youngster Avery Johnson at the helm. He's short on experience, but put forward promising tape in his limited exposure, particularly in the bowl game.

The Ollie Gordon Situation

Oklahoma State's star running back returns after leading college football in rushing a year ago, but that's likely not what will be discussed first when Gundy represents the program in Vegas.

Gordon, the preseason Offensive Player of the Year and only unanimous All-Big 12 selection, was arrested recently on suspicion of driving under the influence and over the speed limit.

OSU said that Gordon will be on site to represent the Cowboys , a good sign concerning his status with the program, but we hope to learn more from both the player and his coach.

Otherwise, the Pokes remain in contention for the Big 12 crown, placing third in the media poll with 14 first-place votes and returning key experience on both sides of the ball.

Coach Prime's Big 12 debut

Though this isn't Deion Sanders' first year in a Power conference, it will be his first attending the Media Days of one. Colorado's head coach didn't go to Pac-12 Media Days last year after having surgery and he was at Jackson State the year before that.

Coach Prime is always appointment viewing and should once again own the room when taking questions about the state of his Buffaloes team, which underwent another major turnover thanks in large part to the transfer portal.

But two key foundations remain in place: Shedeur Sanders, the coach's son and the Buffs' dynamic quarterback, and two-way player Travis Hunter, a star at both wide receiver and defensive back. Both are among the best overall players nationally and on them Colorado's hopes largely depend.

Big 12 Media Preseason Football Rankings

First-place votes in parentheses

1. Utah (20) 2. Kansas State (19) 3. Oklahoma State (14) 4. Kansas (5) 5. Arizona (3) 6. Iowa State 7. West Virginia 8, UCF 9. Texas Tech 10. TCU 11. Colorado 12. Baylor 13. BYU 14. Cincinnati 15. Houston 16. Arizona State

Conducting (Choral / Orchestral / Wind)

Choral conducting.

A pre-screening audition video is required with your application materials. The audition video should include both rehearsal, and performance recordings, demonstrating the candidate’s conducting skills. The camera should be positioned so as to produce a face-on view of the conductor. Upon faculty review of the materials submitted within the online application, a limited number of finalists will be invited via email to audition and interview at the University of Kansas on a specific audition date.

Process: The conducting audition will last roughly ten to fifteen minutes. The candidate will be expected to conduct a single piece. Prior to the candidate’s arrival on campus, the Director of Choral Activities will assign the title for the audition. The candidate will conduct straight through the work (or movement), giving the audition panel an opportunity to see the candidate’s artistry and physical communication skills as a conductor. In this segment of the audition, the candidate may not coach the choir verbally. Following the first reading of the piece, the candidate will be expected to rehearse a single segment of the work. This will give the audition panel a chance to see the candidate’s approach to rehearsal. It is important that the candidate not choose a segment that is too long or that cannot be improved in the time available. The point of the exercise is to see the maximum improvement of the passage in the shortest amount of time. The candidate should keep rehearsing until informed that the time limit has been reached. The candidate will then be given some specific conducting challenges to determine his or her ability to respond to instructions. This phase is conducted with the choir so as to create the most adverse condition possible. The candidate’s ability to respond to instructions will be determined from this exercise.

Faculty Contact : Eduardo Garcia-Novelli,  [email protected]

Orchestral Conducting

A pre-screening audition video is required with your application materials.

  • For DMA students, the audition video should show the applicant conducting at least two compositions in performance and two compositions in rehearsal.
  • For MM applicants, the audition video should show the applicant conducting at least one composition in performance and one in rehearsal.

In both cases, the conductor must be in frontal or a partial frontal view and at least part of the ensemble must be in view. Upon faculty review of the materials submitted within the online application, a limited number of finalists will be invited via email to audition and interview at the University of Kansas on a specific audition date.

The live audition piece for applicants in Orchestral Conducting will be an orchestral work to be determined by the Director of Orchestral Activities.

The audition will include three parts:

  • An interview with the Orchestral Director discussing the applicant’s experience and professional goals
  • A musical skills and knowledge diagnostic including aural skills, score recognition, and knowledge of orchestral instruments and musical terminology.
  • A twenty minute audition with the KU Symphony Orchestra adjudicated by the heads of the conducting divisions. The audition will begin with a run-through to assess non-verbal communication and gesture. The audition will conclude with the candidate rehearsing the piece in the remaining time.

It is preferred that all applicants for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting have four years of successful professional-level conducting experience that can be documented. This may include public school teaching, directing a professional or semi-professional ensemble, or other equivalent professional arenas.

A pre-screening audition video is required with your application materials. The video should show the applicant conducting at least two compositions in performance and two compositions in rehearsal. The conductor must be in full frontal or a partial profile view and at least part of the ensemble must be in view. The repertoire selected for the video must be appropriate to the musical and technical abilities of the ensemble. If you have had difficulty due to COVID, please contact us to inquire what options are acceptable.

Upon faculty review of the materials submitted within the online application, a limited number of finalists will be invited via email to audition and interview at the University of Kansas on a specific audition date.

The live audition includes three parts:

  • An interview with Paul Popiel  [email protected]  discussing the applicants professional goals, teaching philosophy, and experience.
  • A musical skills and knowledge diagnostic including aural skills, score recognition, and knowledge of wind/percussion instruments and musical terminology.

Application fee: Your application fee will vary depending on your status.

  • Domestic degree-seeking: $65
  • International degree-seeking: $85
  • Certificate-seeking: $30
  • Non-degree-seeking: $30

Applicants may be eligible for an application fee waiver. To be considered for a fee waiver, most applicants must submit a  fee waiver request . This process is specific to programs listed on this page , which contains links to program information. Note, only certain programs offer sponsorship for application fees. To determine if a program reviews applications for fee waivers, contact the program directly.

Additionally:

  • For MBA or other master's Business programs, reach out to the Business School for details on requesting an application fee waiver. Both Master's in Accounting and Business Ph.D. applicants should use the fee waiver request form above.
  • If interested in a KU Medical Center program, contact the respective graduate or certificate program for information on requesting an application fee waiver.
  • Applicants who provide documentation in the graduate application of past participation in a federally funded TRIO program won't be charged an application fee and won't receive a prompt for payment.
  • Certain programs sponsor the application fee, and applicants to these programs won't receive a prompt for payment.

Before submitting a fee waiver request ,  you must first start a graduate admission application and select the program you're applying to - fee waiver requests without a program will be denied. Although not required, you are encouraged to complete your admission application before submitting your fee waiver request. Your application fee is non-refundable, so do not pay the application fee when you submit your admission application if you plan to submit a fee waiver request. Fee waiver requests should be submitted well before the program application deadline to allow time for review.

For applicants who are citizens of countries with Temporary Protected Status  or countries in crisis as defined by internal resources, Graduate Admissions reviews fee waiver requests within 2-3 business days. Individual programs review all other fee waiver requests. Not all programs offer fee waivers ,  and program review times vary.

Applicants will be notified when a decision has been made on the fee waiver request. If a fee waiver is approved, it will be added to the application, and you will not be asked to submit an application fee. If your fee waiver is denied, you will need to pay your application fee before your application is reviewed for admission.

Official test scores: Some programs require tests such as the GRE or the GMAT. Refer to your program of interest to confirm test requirements. GRE test scores should be sent by ETS to KU's institution code of 6871.

Some applicants need to provide scores related to the University’s proof of English proficiency requirement. Details can be found here .

References and recommendations : Programs may require you to provide references or letters of recommendation as part of your application. If so, the application will prompt you to provide names and contact information for each reference. It is VERY important that you double check that your references’ names and emails are correct. A failure to correctly fill out the recommendation section may cause significant issues and delay the review of your application .

Recommendation requests may be submitted through the application before the application is fully submitted . , or at the time of submission. Your references will receive instructions on how to complete their recommendation. Recommendations received on your behalf prior to application submission will link to your application when it is submitted.

If you are not prompted to provide references on your application, that could mean your program doesn’t accept online recommendation submissions or doesn’t require them. Refer to your program of interest to confirm reference and letter of recommendation requirements.

Updates to support our applicants.

Changes to Fuqua's interview policy and Consortium membership headline the updates to the Daytime MBA application.

Allison Jamison

Published July 2, 2024

ku phd interview dates

With each application year, I’m continuously impressed by the dedication of Fuqua’s fantastic applicants and the matching enthusiasm of our Admissions team in getting to know them. The Daytime MBA Class of 2026 is, in a word, impressive. Amazing. Motivated. Inspirational. I know, that’s more than “a” word, but I can’t help myself!

While last year broke a school record for the number of applications received, our team is always looking for new ways to improve our process — and this year is no exception.

Here are three things applicants should know before completing the 2024-2025 Daytime MBA application .

1. Interviews Offered by Invitation Only

One of our goals is to ensure our process is as fair and consistent as possible. Therefore, as we reviewed our processes for this application year, we have decided to offer interviews by invitation only.

In prior years, we offered interviews both by invitation and during an applicant-initiated “open interview” period. However, we found that some applicants scheduled interviews before they were truly ready, afraid that they would be penalized for not taking advantage of the open interview period. While no applicant was penalized for “waiting” for an invitation to interview, we acknowledge the difference in the interview process was a source of stress and anxiety for many.

By moving to a single, consistent interview policy, we hope to alleviate this stress. Here’s how the process will work:

  • Applicants, including Early Action applicants, will submit their application.
  • Then, they will await an interview invitation. Interview decisions will be released on a rolling basis as applications are reviewed.
  • An applicant who is invited to interview will receive an email invitation with instructions on how to schedule the interview, either in-person or virtually, depending on what they indicated in their application.

We are excited about this change because it allows more time for applicants to plan and schedule their interview, whether they are choosing to interview virtually or travel to Durham for an on-campus interview. It’s important to note that while interview decisions are released on a rolling basis, there is no benefit or disadvantage to receiving an invitation earlier versus later. Regardless of when you receive your interview decision, all applicants will still receive their admission decision on the published decision release date .

2. Applying Through Consortium

As we shared earlier this year, we are excited that Fuqua has joined the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management , an alliance of business schools and industry partners aiming to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in business schools. Fuqua has a long history of supporting and championing those who are underrepresented in the business world. Becoming a member of the Consortium was a natural fit for us.

Applicants who are applying through the Consortium will find our essay questions and additional materials through the Consortium application. They will be considered for interview invitations on the same timelines as applicants applying directly to Fuqua through either Round 1 or Round 2.

3. Understanding the New GMAT Format

We are not making any changes to our test score policy — Fuqua will continue to accept the GMAT, GRE, or Executive Assessment (EA), without a preference for any test. Many applicants have questions about how the “new” GMAT score will be considered. Previously called the “GMAT Focus,” this shortened version of the GMAT is now the only format offered by GMAC. In addition to the GRE and EA, we will continue to accept both the new and old GMAT scores (test scores are valid for five years after the test date).

The new GMAT format uses a different scoring scale, so applicants should be aware that their scores may look different. Our Admissions team is very familiar with the new scale, though, so don’t worry! We encourage applicants to look into the new GMAT scoring scale .

Many people think their GMAT score “looks” lower than published GMAT averages, but that may not be the case. Looking at the percentiles that go along with the composite score offers a more clear comparison. For example, a 700 on the old GMAT was in the 89 th percentile; on the new GMAT, the 89 th percentile corresponds to a score of 655.

Again, Fuqua’s testing policy has not changed, but given the change to the GMAT itself, I wanted to be clear about how applicants should view their scores. We always encourage applicants to submit any test scores they have, whether they’ve taken one test type or have tried all three.

With these improvements in place, our Admissions team is ready to start recruiting the next wave of impactful business leaders. The application is live now, and our travel dates are on the calendar. We look forward to getting to know the Class of 2027!

Clinical Psychology Program

The Clinical Psychological Science program at the University of Kansas offers a Clinical Science approach to graduate training, and provides in-depth training in the application of scientific principles to all aspects of clinical psychology.

Program Philosophy

Admissions, outcomes & other data (.pdf), clinical psychology student handbook (.pdf), apa accreditation.

The program has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1949, and in line with our clinical science training philosophy, the Program is a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science. We aim to produce professional Clinical Scientists who demonstrate mastery of knowledge in the field of scientific psychology and who will have (1) the ability to generate new scientific knowledge and theory related to the field of psychology, and (2) can make independent contributions to the evolving base of skills and scientific knowledge required for effective clinical practice.

KU Medical Center & Clinical Health Track

The Clinical Science program has strong connections with the University of Kansas Medical Center, and offers a track in Clinical Health Psychology. We are a member of the Council of Clinical Health Psychology Training Programs, which defines Clinical Health Psychology as the application of scientific knowledge to understanding the interrelations among behavioral, emotional, cognitive, social, and biological components of health and disease. The distinct focus of Clinical Health Psychology within our program is on physical health problems, and more specifically emphasizes the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of illness and disability, the promotion and maintenance of health, and the improvement of the health care system.

Explore the Program

We have a long and proud tradition of training leaders in the field of psychology. Our first class entered in 1946, a few years before KU participated at the original Boulder Conference that defined the Scientist-Practitioner training model. Although we have moved to a more focused clinical science approach, our history is strongly rooted in the Boulder Model. Training in the program starts broadly with foundational courses and experiences in research, data analysis, psychological assessment, and theory and methods of psychotherapy, and narrows in subsequent years to allow for more specialization within student’s area of interest. Coursework and requirements are designed to be completed in 4-5 years, followed by a yearlong internship. Our students obtain excellent internships, and over the last 10 years, all of our graduates are employed, with many in university psychology departments, medical schools, and Veterans Administration hospitals. Our licensure rate is continuously over 90%.

Professional Licensure

The Department of Psychology Clinical Psychology Program meets the educational requirements for licensure as a psychologist in the states of Kansas and Missouri.  The  NC-SARA Professional Licensure Directory  provides resources for licensure and certification boards in other states & territories.

KU’s licensure programs strive to maintain accurate and up-to-date information about the educational requirements for licensure in U.S. states and territories. However, regulations are subject to change and varying interpretations. In addition to possible changes in educational requirements, licensure often includes additional requirements, such as specific examinations and additional training or practicum hours. It is highly recommended that students seek guidance from the appropriate licensing agency before beginning an academic program to ensure they know what is needed to obtain the license/certification/registration in the state in which they intend to practice and/or seek licensure.

Clinical Health Psychology

Clinical health psychology is concerned with the contributions that psychologists can make to understanding health and illness, frequently in collaboration with other health professionals, including physicians, nurses among others. It involves the development of theory, research, and intervention directed toward prevention, treatment, and management of physical disease and disability, as well as the promotion of health.

M.d.-ph.d. physician scientist training program.

The purpose of the MD-PhD dual degree program is to prepare highly qualified and motivated post-baccalaureate students for careers as physician scientists in academic medicine and biomedical research. To promote a close-knit group of students, MD-PhD training at the University of Kansas Medical Center includes small group interactions with the program directors and monthly interactions with fellow students at all phases of their training. A peer-mentoring program allows students to advise and guide each other on issues related to research and clinical training, personal life-work balance, and professional development. The program is conducted under the auspices of the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Executive Dean of the School of Medicine, with guidance from a MD-PhD Advisory Committee. On average, students spend about 7-8 years in the program; the variable period usually depends on the time needed to complete their research and dissertation.

The Program seeks highly motivated students with outstanding academic credentials and potential, a strong interest in research, and demonstrated research experience. There are no Kansas residency requirements for admission to the MD-PhD program and students with exceptional potential as physician scientists are recruited from around the country.

Applicants need to submit the following credentials: (Deadline October 15th for application through AMCAS, all needed items due October 30th)

Qualifying Examination

Students demonstrate knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals and a potential for research through the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination (Qual). The Qual demonstrates the ability of the student to understand and apply fundamental concepts and evaluates their potential to pursue doctoral research. The EECS Qual completes the Ph.D. Research Skills Requirement for Doctoral students at KU.

A student becomes eligible to take the qualifying exam after both: (a) completing 24 hours of graduate coursework, and (b) being formally accepted into the PhD program. The student must also complete 6 hours of KU graduate coursework before taking the exam.

The EECS Qual uses four types of evidence to evaluate the PhD student.

  • Advisor recommendation – the student’s advisor will provide a frank but confidential assessment of the student’s ability to conduct PhD-level scholarship.
  • Academic performance – the KU classroom performance of the student will be assessed.
  • Research ability – each student will submit written evidence of their research ability.
  • Oral exam – A committee of 3 faculty members will interview the student, discussing and probing topics associated with items 2 and 3 above.

A PhD student application for the Qual includes an “Abstract of Research Interests”, which provides a description and overview of the student’s interests and anticipated research direction. The main purpose of the abstract is to introduce the oral exam committee to the scholarly interests of the student, such that conversations and questions during the exam are fairly and effectively aligned with these interests. A secondary purpose of the abstract is to provide evidence as to the student’s ability to write effectively, and to communicate clearly and unambiguously technical content and ideas. As such, this abstract must be written and edited entirely by the student. The prose must therefore be original—it cannot be copied from a published document.

A committee of 3 faculty members appointed by the department will conduct an oral exam of the PhD student. The committee will receive the student’s research statement and course transcripts prior to this oral interview. Two hours will be scheduled for this interview. Using the student’s KU transcript, research statement, and the oral exam, the student’s exam committee will make a pass/fail recommendation. The department’s qualifying exam committee will then review both the advisor’s and the exam committee’s recommendations and render a grade for the exam.

Students who fail the exam are allowed to retake it one more time between 6 to 12 months after receiving a failing grade. If they fail it a second time, they will not be allowed to continue in the doctoral program.

Explore:  Qualifying Exam Topics    Application Form (pdf)

Ph.D. Activity Report

Students are required to submit an annual Ph.D. Activity Report (PHAR), which is used to assess academic progress.

A student who receives a second unsatisfactory evaluation will be placed on academic probation. Academic probation will be removed upon substantial progress as documented in the student's next PHAR; without substantial progress toward the degree, the student's Ph.D. status will be terminated.

Comprehensive Examination

After completing at least three-fourths of the course work requirements, students must pass the comprehensive examination. Before the exam, they will submit a detailed proposal for a possible dissertation. The doctoral committee will conduct an oral examination that evaluates a candidate’s proposal and overall knowledge of Computer Science.

If the student passes the comprehensive examination and later chooses a substantially different dissertation topic, a new proposal must be presented for the approval of the doctoral committee.

At least three weeks before the intended Ph.D. comprehensive exam, a student must do the following:

  • Verify your plan of study is complete, correct, and on file in the EECS Graduate Office
  • Schedule a time and location for defense with committee members and coordinate with staff to reserve the room
  • Email date, time, location, full committee, title and short abstract (< 350 words) to the  EECS Graduate Office
  • Distribute a written Ph.D. dissertation proposal to your committee
  • Prepare and practice comprehensive presentation

Doctoral Dissertation and Final Oral Examination

  • Interviewing

The interview process is a conversation between you (the applicant) and your potential employer. The purpose of the interview is to find out 3 things:

  • Do you have the skills and experience to do the job?
  • Do you have the motivation, work ethic, and energy to achieve the necessary objectives?
  • Will you fit in with the company's organizational dynamics and culture?

How to Ace Your Interview

Before  .

  • Get the details of when, where, and with whom you’ll be meeting.  Look up directions to the location and where to park.
  • Research the employer  so you won't be stumped by common questions like, “What interested you in this position?” or “What do you know about our company?”
  • Check your   online professional image . Your online presence on social media and other sites should be an asset, not a liability.
  • Prepare your outfit.  For most interviews, you should wear  business attire  – ideally, a two-piece matching suit.
  • Practice, practice, practice.  You can brainstorm your answers for  common interview questions , practice with friends, family, in front of the mirror, or  online , or  schedule a mock interview appointment  at the UCC.
  • Need business professional clothing for an upcoming interview or networking event? Check out  the Professional House of Garments (P.H.O.G.)  in Summerfield 203 for free interview-ready clothing items, including suits, shoes, ties, and shirts.

During

  • Be aware of your body language.  Sit up straight, make eye contact, and smile.
  • Be positive and enthusiastic.  Deliver thoughtful, relevant responses that emphasize results.
  • Prepare to ask questions of your own , including asking about next steps and/or timeline of the interview process to demonstrate your interest in the position and company.
