I have found that writing a love letter to my husband often helps – I pour out my emotions on paper and leave it on his desk. It’s the best way to say how you feel, especially if you’re shy.

Sometimes, even though our emotions are strong, it might feel like we’re not sharing or showing them as often as we should.

I have noticed about myself that I’d rather buy a gift for my husband from Amazon or similar online shopping sites than say how much I love him and what he means to me.

Because of this, a few years ago I decided to write my first love letter to my husband.

It felt a little bit funny at first, but I found it better than showing my emotions in person because I could truly express myself.

Now, I write a letter to my husband a couple of times a year for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

Modern Love’s ‘Marry My Husband’ Essay Has A Follow-Up, 1 Year After Writer's Death

As she was dying of ovarian cancer last year, author and filmmaker Amy Krouse Rosenthal wrote a wrenching essay for The New York Times’ “Modern Love” column , creating what she called a “general profile” for her husband Jason to begin dating.

Rosenthal wrote that she was “facing a deadline, in this case, a pressing one. I need to say this (and say it right) while I have a) your attention, and b) a pulse.”

What followed was a dating profile and a love letter.

“He is an easy man to fall in love with,” she said of her husband of 26 years. “I did it in one day.”

The essay, “You May Want to Marry My Husband,” immediately went viral, generating hundreds of responses and becoming one of the column’s most popular pieces.

Days after the Times published the essay in March 2017, Rosenthal died at age 51.

In honor of Father’s Day, Jason Rosenthal has written his own essay for the column, recounting lessons he has learned in the year since his wife’s death.

“I am that guy,” he began in the essay, “My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me,” published Friday. He said he received countless letters from women around the world in response to his wife’s essay, which gave him “solace and even laughter” after her death.

Many women took Amy up on her offer, sending me a range of messages — overly forward, funny, wise, moving, sincere. In a six-page handwritten letter, one woman marketed her automotive knowledge, apparently in an effort to woo me: “I do know how to check the radiator in the vehicle to see if it may need a tad of water before the engine blows up. While I do not know much about reality TV, there was also this touching letter submitted by the child of a single mother, who wrote: “I’d like to submit an application for my mom, like friends and family can do for participants on ‘ The Bachelor .’”

Rosenthal wrote that Amy’s greatest legacy was teaching him to value the opportunity for “a new future,” and through her essay, connect with others dealing with grief.

“One thing I have come to understand, though, is what a gift Amy gave me by emphasizing that I had a long life to fill with joy, happiness and love. Her edict to fill my own empty space with a new story has given me permission to make the most out of my remaining time on this planet,” he wrote.

“The cruelest irony of my life is that it took me losing my best friend, my wife of 26 years and the mother of my three children, to truly appreciate each and every day. I know that sounds like a cliché, and it is, but it’s true.”

Why I Love My Open Marriage

B ack in 2016, on one of the bleached-out days that fuse winter with early spring, my husband Stewart and I sat on an oversized couch in front of Evelyn, our couple’s therapist. Therapy had been my idea—or more accurately, my ultimatum. We were several years into our open marriage journey, and what had initially felt like a short-term experiment was evolving into something else, a graft that was becoming part of our marital flesh. What’s more, rules we had initially established to protect ourselves from the inherent uncertainty of non-monogamy were proving increasingly difficult to follow. (Our cardinal rule—"no falling in love"—became particularly sticky.) If we planned to commit to non-monogamy long term, I insisted, we would need help. Stewart had balked at “paying someone to pretend to care about our problems,” as he put it. So I threw down the gauntlet: agree to therapy, or we would close the marriage.

At our third session, Stewart surprised me by speaking before I’d had a chance to present my own agenda for the hour. The issue in short was this: When I’d laid my phone on the counter before it faded to black, Stewart had seen my text to the man I was dating at the time. The message read something like this: “I wish I could escape and come over right now.”

Seeing the hurt in Stewart’s eyes, I was steeped in shame. My voice faltered, coming out in a whisper: “I didn’t mean I wanted to escape from you . It’s more like wanting to escape from my role. As a wife. As a mother.”

The language of marriage and the language of captivity have a long history of overlap, but that language has often been reserved for men. Referring to a wife as “the old ball and chain” is part of the lexicon. Bachelor parties are held in the spirit of giving a groom “one last night of freedom.” When I was growing up, however, little girls were supposed to dream of their weddings as the climax of their lives. Marriage was the assumed goal, and motherhood was viewed as the fruition of a woman’s success. How could I want to free myself from a life I was lucky to have? It was the first time I’d ever voiced this yearning, which felt so taboo. I loved my husband and my children. I didn’t want to leave them behind. But clearly some part of me did.

In those days, I was doing quite a bit of therapy. I moved from individual to couple’s therapy and back again, desperately trying to figure myself out. It was my “solo” therapist, Mitchell, who helped me understand the connection between opening my marriage and my yearning to escape. What I was really looking for was a way to find a self that existed outside the constructs of “wife” and “mother”—escaping the restriction of my roles, yes, but also seeking something more. Seeking  my own version of “freedom.”

Over time, I came to realize the central fallacy of my original approach to finding freedom through sex. What I needed to do was to set myself free. For years, I marched from one “relationship” to the next, thinking that a variety of partners was the point, my ticket to the freedom I desired. But it turns out, they were simply distracting me from the core that was being fortified within myself. Every time I became intimate with someone new, I saw myself with fresh eyes. Every time a relationship ended, I spent time nurturing the innermost me that had been hurt. And so, over the years, my sense of self blossomed because of the space that open marriage had created.

The idea that people need space—space to breathe, space to move, space to grow—makes sense to most of us in the abstract. We are like all living things in this way. We know that for a houseplant to flourish, it requires a pot large enough to give its roots room to develop. We might feel outrage at the practice of wild animals held captive in zoos. And yet, the phrase “I need space” is synonymous with break-ups, with endings rather than beginnings. How would we react if our beloved partner were to utter those three words? Why can’t we see the need for spaciousness in love as well?

In his Letters to a Young Poet , a work that is oft quoted at wedding ceremonies and then too-quickly forgotten, Rainer Maria Rilke describes this connection between freedom and love so aptly. “The point of marriage is not to…[tear] down all boundaries; on the contrary, a good marriage is one in which each partner appoints the other to be the guardian of his solitude,” Rilke explains. “A merging of two people is an impossibility, and where it seems to exist, it is a hemming-in, a mutual consent that robs one party or both parties of their fullest freedom and development.”

Was opening our marriage the only way Stewart and I could guard one another’s solitude, the only way I could find the space I needed for self-discovery? Of course not. Let me be clear on this: Non-monogamy is certainly not everyone’s path. But it was my path. It’s a path I’ve stayed on for 15 years and counting. And my experience confirms the words of Audre Lorde: “The erotic is the nurturer… of all our deepest knowledge.”

At the end of that couple’s therapy session, Evelyn told us the following: “In some ways, open marriage is a joint adventure. But at the same time, your outside relationships are individual explorations. And there are risks. You don’t want to head off into the wilderness without knowing how to find your way home.”

Evelyn turned out to be right, but not in the way I believed at the time. What I didn’t know then is that the terrain I explored was not sex, per se, but myself. The risk was not that either my husband or I would find passion—or love—with someone else, but that by giving up the freedom to explore, I’d condemn myself to a life of stagnation and resentment. I would be suffocated by my own sense of safety. I would wake up one morning and find myself tucked inside the Tupperware with the leftover chicken and carrot sticks I packed for everyone else’s lunch, and there would be no way out, no entry point for air.

And the wilderness I had wandered into was different than what I expected, too. Far from being a frightening place, an inhospitable wasteland filled with danger—threats to my marriage, to my family, my security—I now see the landscape of my adventures in non-monogamy as a place of great beauty, splendid in its lack of societal constructs, a place that is purely my own. I carry this wilderness and a solid sense of home—my own True North—within me. There is plenty of space for both. And if I remember this, I will never be lost.

Dear Lizzy,

My sister has been given a terminal prognosis and has six to 12 months left. I do not know how to cope with this. Our mum died 30 years ago, I was 30 and my sister 25. We were always close but we became closer and we became each other’s mum always there for each other. Our children were close growing up and we still are.

When my sister told me we were both crying and telling each other how much we loved each other. My sister’s children all know and are heartbroken, but now everyone is being brave, including my sister, who has accepted her fate and has settled all her estate. Me, well I keep crying thinking about losing her and can’t cope as well as her and her children. My husband, who is also terminal, has maybe up to two years, is supporting me which makes me feel bad because I don’t feel as shocked about losing him because I knew I would have my sister to help me through my loss.

I do have my children and grandchildren around me which I am so grateful for. How do I cope with the next year knowing I am going to lose my sister and then my husband? I can’t stop crying but I want to be brave for my sister.

How Can I Survive

Dear How Can I Survive,

My heart breaks for you. So much horrible loss on the horizon. It’s too much and any person would be wondering the same thing.

First, I want you to take a deep breath. Long ago, a friend of mine who was going through cancer told me about a mantra someone gave her: “This is the perfect moment. This is the only moment.”

I’m giving it to you, too. Breathe in and think, “This is the perfect moment.” Breathe out and think, “This is the only moment.”

When I am playing out all the awful scenarios that are bound to happen in the future, this exercise helps me remember that all we are guaranteed is this moment and in this moment, I am here and I am alive.

Your sister and your husband are also here, right now. It is so incredibly difficult to remember when doom is on the horizon, but doom has yet to arrive and people with terminal diagnoses sometimes live longer than expected.

Don’t squander a minute of your time with these people you love so much. And also: It’s OK to feel sad. Let the feeling pass through you, acknowledge it, and try the mantra.

Of course, that won’t always be enough. A grief support group could give you a like-minded community to help you get through this. Your local hospital might have resources , or just try Googling it in your area and see what comes up.

When I started this column, I vowed to avoid just telling people to go to therapy. But you are in the midst of an earth-shattering life change and I think it would be very helpful to you, and your family, if you found a therapist now, that you like, that can help you navigate this period. Because it’s going to be very hard and you don’t have to figure it out alone.

The true story behind the Lifetime movie ‘Gaslit By My Husband,’ according to Morgan Metzer herself

Lifetime's "Gaslit By My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story" is inspired by real events.

In the early hours of New Year’s Day in 2021, Morgan Metzer awoke to a nightmare: a masked man entered her bedroom, beat her, restrained her and sexually assaulted her.

The intruder, who used a device to disguise his voice, left Morgan Metzer tied up on her deck with a pillowcase over her head and fled the house.

Soon after the brutal attack, Morgan Metzer’s ex-husband, Rodney Metzer, arrived on the scene. He comforted Morgan and seemed devastated by what had happened to her.

But before long, the unimaginable truth would emerge: it was Rodney Metzer himself who had attacked her.

The Lifetime movie explores how Rodney Metzer gaslit his wife for years, leading her to question her own reality, and how this abuse culminated in a horrific attack.

“Gaslit By My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story” stars Jana Kramer as Morgan Metzer, and was also executive produced by Kramer.

Kramer has been open about her own experiences with domestic abuse , and has supported Lifetime’s Stop Violence Against Women campaign, as well as the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

The actor and country singer says she hopes sharing Morgan Metzer’s story will help others recognize the signs of gaslighting and abuse, and to realize they are not alone.

“I wanted to play this part was because I know that it’s so many other people’s stories as well,” Kramer tells TODAY.com. “I wanted to be able to tell this and shed some light on this topic. And Morgan’s very brave to allow us to be able use her story to help other people.” -missing word I think

Kramer’s former “One Tree Hill” co-star, Austin Nichols, stars as Rodney, and Kramer’s real-life daughter, Jolie Rae Caussin, makes her acting debut as Morgan’s daughter, Amelia.

What true story that inspired ‘Gaslit By My Husband'?

Lifetime’s “Gaslit By My Husband” is based on the real story of Morgan Metzer, a Georgia woman whose ex-husband gaslit her over time and ended up brutally assaulting her.

In the early morning of Jan. 1, 2021, the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from Rodney Metzer, who said he had driven to his ex-wife’s house and discovered her tied up on her deck after having been assaulted, according to an August 2021 release from the Office of the District Attorney for the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit in Canton, Georgia.

However, a subsequent investigation found that Rodney Metzer himself had broken into his ex-wife’s home and attacked her. According to the district attorney’s office, he hit Morgan Metzer with the butt of a gun, tried to strangle her, then zip-tied her hands and assaulted her.

He then left her on her deck with a pillowcase over her head and told her not to move until she heard his car horn honking. 

Investigators found “substantial” evidence to implicate Rodney Metzer in the assault, according to the district attorney’s office, including a handgun in his vehicle and zip ties in his home that matched the ones used in the assault. Authorities also obtained surveillance footage showing Rodney Metzer purchasing zip ties from Lowe’s Home Improvement. 

In addition, authorities say they found the following search terms in Rodney Metzer’s internet browsing history: “How long before you starve to death, how to change the sound of your voice, and how long it takes to choke someone unconscious.” –each searched phrase should have its own quote marks

Morgan and Rodney Metzer were recently divorced at the time of the attack. They had known each other since they were teenagers, and they had previously been married for a decade and shared then-9-year-old twins, according to Fox 5 Atlanta .

In the days leading up to the assault, authorities say Rodney Metzer faked a cancer diagnosis “in an attempt to gain sympathy from his ex-wife,” a plotline that is shown in the Lifetime movie.

Authorities say Rodney Metzer had also “created a convoluted plan that the investigators in this case and our office truly believe involved a plot to kill her and then himself,” and that “when he couldn’t go through with that plan, he instead devised a new plan to rescue her.”

Where is Rodney Metzer now?

On Aug. 4, 2021, Rodney Metzer pled guilty to 14 charges related to the attack on his ex-wife, including kidnapping, sexual battery and aggravated assault, District Attorney Shannon Wallace said in a release at the time.

He was sentenced to 70 years in prison, with the first 25 years to be served in confinement and the remaining 45 years on probation. 

Metzer, who was 36 at the time of his sentencing, is currently incarcerated in the Augusta State Medical Prison in Grovetown, Georgia, according to inmate records from the Georgia Department of Corrections .

What to know about the signs of gaslighting

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse in which the abuser uses various techniques to make their victim “question their own feelings, instincts, and sanity,” according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline’s website .

The term originates from a 1938 British play called “Gas Light,” which was later adapted into multiple movies. In the play, a husband gradually dims the gas lights at home but tells his wife she is imagining the lower light levels, leading her to think she is losing her grip on reality. 

In “Gaslit By My Husband,” Rodney is shown repeatedly gaslighting Morgan, often subtly.

In one scene, Rodney accuses Morgan of forgetting to pick up their kids from school. 

“You said you could do it today,” he says. “Don’t you remember?” 

Morgan is confused, because she had never said she would pick up the kids.

This may seem like a minor incident on the surface but over time, when an abuser repeatedly questions a person’s truth or accuses them of being in the wrong, the person might start to question their own memory and judgment, too.

Metzer says she wants people to recognize how these “small, tiny red flags” can accumulate over time.

“I want them to know it’s not big stuff. It could be very minimal,” she tells TODAY.com. “It could add up… piece by piece.”

“Check yourself with every argument or every situation that arises,” she continues. “Generally go, ‘OK, was I at fault? Did I not do this?’ And then don’t let it chip away until it gets big.”

Kramer echoes this, saying gaslighting can be “very sneaky.”

“It kind of can come up and then it builds, and then by that point, you’re questioning every part of your reality,” she says. “You don’t even know what is true versus what’s real.”

In the movie, Rodney’s gaslighting of Morgan escalates to the point where he pushes her down a flight of stairs, but later makes her believe she was the one who pushed him. 

“I’m worried about you, Morgan,” he tells her after the incident. “You’ve been violent, erratic, unfaithful.”

In this scene, Morgan seems disturbed and confused by the actions she falsely believes she committed, and tells her husband, “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“Gaslit By My Husband” also shows how abusers often isolate their victims and manipulate them with threats.

“No one is going to believe you,” Rodney tells Morgan in one scene. “Everyone we know is friends with me, not you. And if you ever try to leave me, they’ll never let you keep the kids.”

Kramer notes that when an abuser gaslights someone into thinking she herself is the problem, she may hesitate to speak out because of guilt or shame.

“Manipulation is the biggest thing in gaslighting. They can manipulate you to think anything, and it’s going to turn into guilt,” she says. “So then typically you hide from your guilt. You don’t want to share your problems out loud. You are not going to go and tell somebody, ‘Oh, my husband and I did this.’ So then you keep it all inside, and you think you’re the bad person.”

One message Kramer wants people to take away is that if you feel trapped in an abusive relationship, you are not alone. 

“It feels very isolating when you’re in a gaslighting abusive relationship that you’re the only one, or you’re crazy or it’s your fault,” she says. “And I hope people find their voice after watching this to know that they’re not alone and that there is help out there.”

Metzer also encourages women to talk honestly with each other about what they are going through at home. 

“The biggest thing is women need to trust each other,” she says. “Stop trying to make it look like everything is absolutely perfect. You’ve got the perfect husband, you’ve got the perfect life. You’ve got the perfect kids. If you would speak to each other, your friends would see the signs first, and you could get out earlier.”

Kramer also notes that whether abuse is emotional or physical, it is all abuse, and it is not OK. 

“ For me, I think verbal abuse is just as bad,” she says. “It’s how it makes you feel. It’s any type of abuse, verbal, mental, sexual, physical abuse. It’s all not OK. And I think we know how we should be treated, and that’s something that we should stand firm on.”

Metzer says sharing her story feels ‘empowering’

Metzer says watching her story play out on screen was “really surreal.”

“I watched it and I felt like it was somebody else’s story. And then every once in a while it would hit me like, ‘Oh, this is about you,’” she says. “Certain parts would make me a little sad. And then some parts I’d be like, ‘I can’t believe I actually went through this. How did I make it?’ And it just made me think women’s strength is beyond powerful.”

Metzer says it was particularly powerful to watch the scene when Rodney sexually assaults her character in the movie, because it made her understand that incident from her own life in a different way.

“I didn’t realize your husband could rape you, but he can,” Metzer says. “And watching this video, a ‘no’ is a ‘no,’ whether it’s your husband or it’s not. … My husband said, ‘You’re supposed to serve me.’ And I didn’t realize how much he actually raped me until I saw that scene, how much I was just, I guess, taken advantage of.”

Kramer, who has been candid about her own experiences with domestic violence, also opens up about what it was like filming the attack scene, saying it was “by far” the most difficult. 

“Just because that was my abuser was on top of me. I couldn’t breathe. He was choking, strangling, hitting. So it was an uncomfortable replay,” she says. “But what my therapist helped me realize was that I got to take the control back that day. So I got to choose the different ending.”

Kramer says the courtroom scene at the end of the movie, when Morgan faces her abuser, was “healing” for her. 

“I got to find my own healing that day and my own weight lifted,” she says. 

While watching her own story on screen was challenging at times, Metzer says it ultimately feels empowering to use her experiences to help others.

“If I don’t take the bad that came of this, that I feel that God wants me to do, it’s like, why did it happen,” Metzer says. “It would happen for no reason. I’ve got to take the pain and turn that into something that’s powerful to help women.”

Through sickness and health came a bit sooner than they’d hoped. 

Just one hour after saying “I do,” bride Mary Greenwell found herself on the ground screaming, “My ankle! My ankle! My ankle!”

The newlywed had suffered a severe fracture following an ill-fated piggyback she’d given her six-foot, 300-pound groom, Blake. 

“Pretty immediately I knew my ankle was broken, it was like it happened in slow motion,” Greenwell, 27, from Boston, Kentucky, told Kennedy News of her Oct. 2019 ceremony-turned-crisis. 

Standing at a petite five feet, three-inches, the brunette and her husky hubby were posing for silly post-nuptial pics when the Blake playfully hopped on her back, inciting the intense injury.  

“I didn’t hear a snap but I could feel a burn in my left ankle,” said Greenwell. “I remember saying ‘My ankle is broken!’”

“I don’t think people thought I was serious at first — but then they saw how swollen it was.” 

Unfortunately, big-day blunders have sent many a blushing bride rushing off to the nearest emergency room. 

Catherine Franks was in need of serious medical attention after repeatedly collapsing from dehydration during her July 2023 hitching. 

And rather than a honeymoon suite, Houston couple Paolo Mugnaini and Valerie Ybarra spent their January 2024 wedding night in a hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after falling 25 feet through the floor of their Italian reception hall.

“I started screaming, calling Valerie, my wife,” recalled Mugnaini. “She was unresponsive and she seemed to have disappeared. I feared that she had been buried by the rubble.”

Greenwell’s husband was, too, concerned about his bride’s well-being after her ankle cracked under his weight. 

“Obviously Mary was very upset and I was very worried about my new wife,” Blake, 30, told Kennedy News. “It’s more the fact that me falling is what broke her ankle. I kind of blame myself.”

After the fall, Greenwell was forced to bid an early farewell to her 150 wedding guests, leaving the invitees to enjoy their $7,000 after-party and speeding off to the hospital — where she was forced to stay until 2:00 a.m.

“I definitely got some funny looks sitting in the ER in my wedding dress,” said the bride, who pouted in pain while waiting to see the doctor. 

Greenwell’s grimace only worsened when physicians discovered she’d broken her ankle in two places and was in need of surgery. Specialists drilled 12 screws and a plate into her ailing ankle. 

But the millennial didn’t care much about the damage to her body. 

“I wasn’t upset that my ankle was broken,” confessed Greenwell. “I was more upset that we had put so much time, money, effort into planning a whole wedding and we had to miss that.”

However, the kooky couple refused to miss their honeymoon vacation to Disney World. Greenwell and Blake took the lover’s trip to the Florida-based amusement park just six weeks after the incident. 

A convalescing Greenwell rode around the attractions on a mobility scooter.

“At the time I was really upset we missed out on it,” she said. “But now I’ve been able to look back and kind of laugh.”

Patrick Wilson 's wife Dagmara Domińczyk is looking back on the day she and the actor tied the knot nearly two decades ago.

On Tuesday, June 18, the Succession actress, 47, marked the couple's 19th wedding anniversary by sharing a photo of their 2005 nuptials on X (formerly Twitter) and reflecting on all that has changed since then.

"19 years ago I was blonde, smoked cigarettes, I worried about everything but was fearless too. I’d also found the love of my life," Domińczyk wrote.

"I don’t smoke anymore, I’m no longer blonde & I worry a lot less," she continued. "And somehow, I love this man more than I did back then. More, and forever & ever."

Wilson, 50, and Domińczyk first met as drama students at Carnegie Mellon in the late 1990s, long before either of them had their big break in Hollywood. Although they lost touch after graduating, they later reconnected in 2004 and married just one year later.

On the couple's 13th anniversary back in 2018, Domińczyk, who emigrated to the United States from Poland with her family in 1983, shared another wedding photo on X — this one showing her crouched down outside in her white wedding gown as she lit a cigarette.

She jokingly captioned the snapshot, "Just a classy bride on her wedding day," before giving her husband a little shout-out.

"Hey, @patrickwilson73 . I quit smoking but I’ll never quit you. That’s a FACT, as our youngest son would say. KOCHAM CIĘ. Happy Anniversary," she wrote.

The following year, Wilson returned the favor by posting an anniversary tribute to his wife as he shared a casual throwback photo of the couple posing with their arms around each other.

"14 or so years ago. Before selfies. Before kids," he captioned the June 2018 post on X. "Just you and me and an old timey ship. I’ll sail away with you anywhere. My oh my, how I love you. Happy Anniversary."

Domińczyk and Wilson share two sons — Kassian, 14, and Kalin "Kal," who turns 18 on June 23. Last month, the Aquaman star shared a post on Instagram reflecting on the big milestones ahead for his elder child — and revealing the teen's budding career.

Alongside both a black-and-white modeling shot and a childhood photo of Kal, the proud dad wrote: "I couldn’t be prouder of this guy… with his senior year coming to a close, and an 18th birthday on the horizon…and college just around the corner… he’s dipping his (large) toes into modeling."

"Go for it, Kal. I can take a liiiiittle credit for your looks, but clearly you’ve always had an eye for the camera," he continued, adding, "I love you!"

Kal, who has been recruited to play football for Bowdoin College in Maine, has also signed with DT Model Management's men's division. The agency's president, David Todd, told PEOPLE the teen takes after his famous father — and also reminds him of a late movie icon.

“The first time I saw Kal, he was standing on the red carpet with his parents,” Todd said. “I was immediately struck by his resemblance to a fresh-faced River Phoenix . After meeting with Kal, I was won over by his charm and charisma that I found to be similar to that of his father, Patrick.”

Kal's parents couldn't be prouder of their son. “We’re so excited for Kal to embark on this journey,” Domińczyk told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. “He’s got the heart, the brains — and maybe we’re biased — but he’s also got the beauty."

Wilson added, "From football player to fashion model, we are so proud of Kal for continuing to carve out his own path.”

I think my husband has dementia. can i leave him before it worsens.

The magazine’s Ethicist columnist on what happens when the implications of marital vows to love “in sickness and in health” become increasingly urgent.

I strongly suspect that my husband is developing dementia. His doctors have found nothing wrong with him. I understand that ‘‘mini’’ cognition tests might not find anything amiss in the early stages of disease, and I imagine that what are now subtle changes will eventually become obvious. In the meantime, our decades-long relationship has eroded. My insistence that he engage with me in maintaining a quality relationship has led to endless fighting and brought me to the brink of divorce.

Since I’ve come to understand that early-stage dementia is at the root of our problems, I’ve quit trying to ‘‘fix’’ our relationship. Our fighting has stopped, but it’s a lonely place to be. I’m not thrilled about spending my retirement years as a caregiver. It’s a huge sacrifice that will narrow my own life significantly. Do we both need to go down with the ship? Can I leave now (and let his family deal with this)? Or am I obligated to stay and care for him? — Name Withheld

The traditional Christian marriage vow was to stay together ‘‘in sickness and in health.’’ The possibility of divorce shifts the meaning of that promise — it becomes more of an ethical commitment than a contractual obligation. In a loving relationship, you support your spouse through hard times, including illness and decline, because you can’t easily imagine doing otherwise. The shared experiences and memories of a life together enable you to find warmth amid cold spells. Though every case is different, age-related dementia can erode people’s capacities without effacing the essence of their personality and character.

You talk about how your husband has changed; it’s also possible that you’ve changed. If medical professionals haven’t diagnosed dementia, it’s worth considering that your personal assessment could be mistaken. Either way, it sounds as if your worry isn’t so much that you’ll become a caregiver as that you won’t have a loving relationship with the person you would be caring for. Before you sever ties, though, I would encourage you to explore couples counseling attuned to the challenges of dementia. See if you can cultivate your own well-being while finding activities that play to your husband’s strengths. You should be able to grieve what is being lost and acknowledge whatever moments of resentment you feel without shame.

I’m not saying that you’re required to sacrifice your well-being to his. The special obligations we have to our loved ones are rooted in the value we place on our relationships with them, with all the resilience, and fragility, of those relationships. Still, I hope you’ll figure out a way to balance your needs with your husband’s. That doesn’t mean going down with the ship; it means trying to find a way to keep the ship afloat.
