How To Write A Finance Thesis (With Free Topics)

The word “thesis” can evoke a range of emotions in a finance student – excitement, trepidation, and perhaps even a healthy dose of imposter syndrome. This guide is your roadmap to writing a stellar finance thesis. Before reading this, make sure that you know whether you are writing a dissertation or a thesis .

Table of Contents

What Is A Finance Thesis

A finance thesis is an academic document that explores a specific topic within the field of finance in a detailed and comprehensive manner. It is a substantial piece of scholarly work typically required as part of an advanced degree program, such as a master’s or a Ph.D. in finance or a related discipline.

The primary purpose of a finance thesis is to demonstrate the author’s understanding of financial concepts, theories, and methodologies, as well as their ability to conduct original research and contribute new insights to the field.

Structure Of A Finance Thesis

A finance thesis follows a typical research paper format but with an in-depth analysis of each section. Here are the elements that you must include in your finance thesis.

Introduction

To captivate your audience from the outset, begin with a compelling hook that sparks interest in your finance thesis. This could be a thought-provoking statistic, a relevant anecdote, or a compelling question. By engaging readers early on, you set the tone for an impactful thesis.

Following the hook, provide a brief but comprehensive overview of the background and context of your finance thesis. Explain the relevance of your chosen topic. This section serves as a foundation for readers, ensuring they understand the context before delving into the specifics of your research.

Introducing The Thesis Statement

The crux of your introduction lies in presenting a clear and concise thesis statement . Articulate the main argument or hypothesis of your finance thesis. Ensure that it is specific, focused, and indicative of the direction your research will take. This roadmap prepares your readers for the journey they are about to embark on throughout the remainder of your thesis.

Literature Review

In the literature review section, write about the existing body of knowledge related to your finance thesis. Provide a comprehensive review of relevant literature, identifying key theories, concepts, and empirical studies. Demonstrate your understanding of the current state of research in your chosen area and highlight any gaps or unresolved questions that your thesis aims to address.

  • Identify key academic journals and publications in your field.
  • Critically analyze relevant research papers , and understand their methodologies and findings.
  • Build upon existing research by identifying gaps or proposing alternative approaches.
  • Take meticulous notes and maintain proper citation practices.

Methodology

Clearly articulate the methods and procedures employed in your research. Detail the rationale behind your chosen methodology, whether it involves quantitative or qualitative approaches, surveys, case studies, or a combination.

By providing a transparent account of your research design, you establish credibility and enable others to replicate or validate your findings.

Present the findings of your research in a systematic and organized manner. Use tables, graphs, and charts to illustrate key data points. Ensure that the results align with your research questions and hypotheses .

This section should be objective, presenting the outcomes without interpretation or analysis—save that for the next section.

Engage in a critical analysis and interpretation of your results in the discussion section. Relate your findings to the existing literature and theories. Address any unexpected results and explore their implications.

Consider the limitations of your study and propose avenues for future research. This section is where you showcase your analytical skills and contribute to the scholarly conversation in your field.

Summarize the key points of your thesis, emphasizing the significance of your findings in the broader context of finance research. Revisit your thesis statement and demonstrate how your research has contributed to the understanding of the topic. Leave your readers with a lasting impression and a sense of closure.

Abstract And Acknowledgments

Craft a concise yet informative abstract that provides a snapshot of your entire finance thesis, including the research question, methods, results, and conclusions. In the acknowledgment section, acknowledge the contributions of others who have supported and influenced your research journey.

Express gratitude for mentorship, guidance, and any financial or logistical assistance received during the thesis process.

How to Write a Financial Aid Statement

Last Updated: February 1, 2023 Fact Checked

This article was co-authored by Michael R. Lewis . Michael R. Lewis is a retired corporate executive, entrepreneur, and investment advisor in Texas. He has over 40 years of experience in business and finance, including as a Vice President for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. He has a BBA in Industrial Management from the University of Texas at Austin. This article has been fact-checked, ensuring the accuracy of any cited facts and confirming the authority of its sources. This article has been viewed 560,453 times.

The financial aid statement is a simple, short piece of writing that students may include on a financial aid letter, in an essay, or in other communications to a financial aid department. The financial aid statement may not be a full communication on its own, but rather an element of a more complex financial aid appeal. If you need to write such a statement in order to reach out to a university or college's financial aid office, follow some basic steps.

Sample Statements and Things to Include

financial assistance thesis

Writing a Statement of Financial Need

Step 1 Write the introduction.

  • For example, you could write the following: “My parents moved to the United States from Albania in order to give us better opportunities. As their oldest child, I will be the first in our family to attend college.”

Step 2 Explain how you are currently paying for college.

  • For example, write something like this: “I have worked to help support my family since I was 16 years old. Currently, I work on the weekends as a waitress to support myself. My parents also give me what they can each month. Since my parents didn’t speak English when we moved here, it was very difficult for them to support our family. My mother worked many hours as a housekeeper in a hotel. They saved what they could, but we do not have enough savings to pay for my college education."

Step 3 Justify why you are seeking aid.

  • For example: “My earnings from my weekend job cover my living expenses. I worked extra shifts over the summer and saved enough to pay for a portion of this year’s tuition. However, I am seeking aid for the portion of the tuition I cannot cover on my own.”

Step 4 Describe how you would benefit from the financial aid.

  • For example: “Receiving financial aid will allow me to focus on my studies during the week without having to worry about earning extra money. I would continue to work on the weekends to cover my living expenses, but I would be able to keep the weekdays free to focus solely on my school work.”

Step 5 Write a closing statement.

  • For example: “Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to discussing my opportunities with you.”

Writing a Statement for a Scholarship

Step 1 Write an introduction.

  • For example: “I am applying for this scholarship in order to further my studies in education. My long-term goal is to work as an ESL teacher in an inner city environment. My academic, work and personal experiences have lead me to this career goal.”

Step 2 Describe your academic record.

  • For example: “I graduated from my undergraduate institution with a 4.0 GPA. I had a double major of Elementary Education and Spanish, with a minor in Sociology. I applied for and received a prestigious internship working with the state government on developing educational policies.”

Step 3 Communicate your leadership skills.

  • For example: “My parents moved our family to this country from Albania when I was 12 years old. I did not speak any English when we arrived. The ESL teachers in my school helped me to be successful in school, and I want to do the same for other students in my circumstances.”

Step 4 Explain your community service history.

  • For example: “Each summer, I volunteer for the Migrant Workers Education Association in Chester County, Pennsylvania. They service migrant workers who come here from Mexico to work on mushroom farms. We not only link families with community services, but we also tutor children in English and help them learn important school skills that will allow them to be successful in school.”

Step 5 Illustrate how your past experience has imparted qualities that the scholarship committee will value.

  • For example: “My experiences as an ESL student and an English tutor have taught me the value of helping children to feel successful and empowered. I know the meaning of hard work, and I have learned how to overcome challenges in my own personal and academic life.”

Step 6 Choose your words carefully.

Making Your Personal Statement Successful

  • Financial Support for Phd Students

PhD Students in the Natural Sciences, Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Medical Sciences

Phd students in the humanities and social sciences programs of the faculty of arts and sciences, phd students in humanities and social sciences programs offered in partnership with other harvard schools, acceptance of financial support.

The Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers incoming PhD students full financial support—including tuition, health insurance fees, and basic living expenses—for a minimum of five years (typically the first four years of study and the completion year). This funding package includes a combination of tuition grants, stipends, traineeships, teaching fellowships, research assistantships, and other academic appointments.

Each student is provided a Notice of Financial Support at the time of admission and is assigned a financial aid officer , who administers this funding and is available to assist with financial concerns. Each spring, continuing students supported by Harvard Griffin GSAS-administered funding sources are required to activate their funding for the upcoming academic year using the Student Aid Portal, an online financial aid management system.

A typical funding package* includes:

  • grants toward tuition and the Harvard University Student Health Program  paid in full for years G1 through G4 and the dissertation completion year, with a partially subsidized dental plan option available
  • a combination of stipend, teaching fellowships, and/or research assistantships during years G1 through G4
  • summer research support from Harvard Griffin GSAS or faculty grants following the first four academic years.

*In some programs, the timing and structure of living expense support may vary from this pattern.

The initial Notice of Financial Support assumes continuous enrollment as a full-time resident student; students not enrolled are not eligible for Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid programs. Students may find that their actual enrollment patterns necessitate adjustments to the timing of their funding. Students wishing to defer Harvard Griffin GSAS-administered funding indicate this in the Student Aid Portal during the annual financial aid acceptance process. The options for deferring financial support vary by type of aid; please refer to the applicable sections of the financial aid policy webpages for details. Students who are considering deferring financial support are strongly encouraged to contact their financial aid officers to review how such actions may impact their funding in future years.

While funding packages vary by program, PhD students in the sciences typically receive full funding until they complete their programs of study. Contact your department administrator or financial aid officer for details.

The future of financial services: AI and Microsoft Copilot

  • By Ryan Blakely, Director, Partner Go-To-Market, Financial Services
  • Future of work

Companies in the financial services industry (FSI) are adopting AI to transform operations and boost employee productivity. AI represents an exciting next step for FSI companies, but fostering innovation requires a foundation of trust and robust governance.

FSI firms handle sensitive financial data and personal information, facing unique security and regulatory challenges. Business leaders must prepare for the future by empowering employees with AI in a responsible and secure manner that protects customer data.

Empowering employee productivity with AI

The AI revolution is underway; the 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report shows that 75% of knowledge workers are already using AI. And the trend is accelerating—nearly half of those who adopted AI did so in the last six months. Employees who implement AI report time savings, improved focus, and enhanced creativity. Within one month, the top 5% of teams using Copilot for Microsoft 365 to summarize meetings saved eight hours—a full workday that they could dedicate to other tasks.

But with unique security and regulatory needs, FSI organizations need to carefully consider how they implement AI. “Without the right guardrails, processes, and policies, unmanaged AI use can present inherent risks and challenges that cannot be overlooked, especially in an area like financial services, where regulatory compliance and corporate governance are paramount,” says Dan Nadir, Chief Product Officer of Theta Lake.

Theta Lake , a Microsoft partner, is a compliance and security company that provides tools for organizations to boost employee productivity with AI securely. It actively monitors any content created, including Copilot creations, to help identify potential compliance risks across all content. With Theta Lake’s AI-powered financial services solutions , companies are detecting sensitive data more accurately and efficiently than doing it manually.

Promoting retention with AI tools

While providing access to AI can pay dividends for employee productivity, it can also drive talent retention. Professionals aren’t motivated to stay at jobs if they are not satisfied with the tools they’re given or the pace of innovation. However, fast-moving technology can pose challenges for FSI companies that depend on stable, secure solutions.

FSI business leaders need new technology to shrink the skills gap, retain talented staff, and enhance human connections. They also need an innovative mindset that thinks beyond simply optimizing processes or filling positions.

Microsoft partner HSO , a business transformation consultant, offers its customers access to Microsoft Copilot Studio to enhance analytics and decision-making. Through its Copilot Studio proof-of-concept program, HSO uses a prescriptive data governance methodology to demonstrate safe, secure Copilot deployments. With HSO’s built-in guardrails, customers can use Copilot without worrying about creating their own security infrastructure.

“Microsoft Copilot Studio offers unprecedented potential, but navigating security concerns is paramount. By partnering with HSO’s experts and following best practices, organizations can harness the full power of AI while safeguarding their data and ensuring regulatory compliance,” says Tom Berger, Vice President & Industry Director, Financial Services at HSO.

Implementing responsible AI to unlock the future of work

The productivity, analytics, and employee experience benefits of AI are clear for FSI firms, but any change can meet resistance. FSI companies need a culture that’s conducive to change and confidence in the security of their AI deployment.

EY , a professional services company, together with alliance partner Microsoft, helps FSI leaders implement AI for their use cases using Copilot. “EY is addressing people’s concerns by focusing on governance, risk, and compliance. In collaboration with Microsoft, we have developed a comprehensive framework for responsible AI, drawing on Microsoft’s extensive experience and know-how in advanced machine learning and automation,” says Rani Bhuva, EY Americas Financial Services Responsible AI Leader. “As rapid adoption takes place across more organizations, it is crucial to take time to make sure governance practices are in place – this framework will help set up our clients for success.”

EY provides its customers with a framework for responsible AI using the Microsoft five-point blueprint and delivers rapid risk assessment for a secure AI deployment. In one example, a bank uses Copilot to convert unstructured call-center data into actionable insights. The bank uses AI to automate manual tasks, generate reports quickly, and enhance customer satisfaction—all while keeping customer data secure.

Innovating in financial services and beyond

FSI companies that adopt AI must consider the security implications. But adopting solutions supported by built-in security and a network of trustworthy partners can help accelerate innovation while reducing risk. By balancing innovation with robust governance, FSI organizations can become AI leaders that harness its benefits while retaining customer trust.

Along with partners like Theta Lake, HSO, and EY, Microsoft provides robust and secure AI capabilities at scale for FSI companies as well as in those in other industries. Learn more about the security and compliance features of Copilot for Microsoft 365 .
