Coursera Financial Aid sample answers (approved every time)

For us students, it is difficult to pay for the courses at Coursera. I believe they should make all their courses free, for all school and college students worldwide. However they instead chose a method whereby everyone would pay, except those who aren’t financially well off. They made a ‘Financial aid’ option available for all their courses, and the great thing is that all applications for aid are approved after 15 days. So to get the courses for free, you simple have to fill out a form of 3 questions. The answers to those questions are given below. (Let’s say you are applying for their popular Machine Learning course, the answers could be like: )

First question : “Why are you applying for financial aid?” (minimum 150 words)

I am currently a student at XYZ School/college and I have a deep interest in the field of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. I often read the popular blogs like Towards Data Science etc. However I feel I lack the understanding of the basics of ML and hence I am not able to comprehend the articles very well. So I want to do a course that covers the fundamental topics of this field.

Being a student, I have no income of myself. I could have done internships and use the stipend to pay for this course, but currently my personal and college expenses are already very high which leaves behind a very small amount as savings.

With my deep interest in the field, I don’t want to lose out the opportunity to learn, just because I am unable to pay the amount. It is a great initiative by Coursera to have a financial aid option, and hence I would like to request a financial waiver for this course.

Second question : “How will taking this course help you achieve your career goals?” (minimum 150 words)

It is no doubt that Machine Learning opens up lots of opportunities for one’s career. The field took off in the 2010s and has been growing ever since. ML experts and Data Scientists are some of the most well paid jobs in the world.

I plan to use this course to improve my knowledge about the fundamentals of Machine Learning and Data Science. I plan to eventually specialise in Deep Learning after having learnt and practiced the basics well enough. I read that this course also includes several practice assignments and a project, doing which would be immensely beneficial to the improvement of my practical skills in this area.

Completing this course would also provide me the confidence to dive deep into data science and take on further challenging assignments. All of this would greatly help me in achieving my career goals in future and also help me in eventually getting a data science job.

Third question : Would you like to take a non interest loan?

Answer ‘No’ to this.

Final question:  Why would you not opt for a zero interest loan?

I still have several years of education ahead of me for which I and my parents have to pay. It would be an additional and considerable expense to pay back the loan amount, due to which I am seeking a complete waiver.

How coursera compares to other educational pathways.

Alternative education opportunities

Coursera is unique in its emphasis on certificates and technical training, which bypass traditional educational requirements. Many of the programs on Coursera do not require a specific educational background, and some are even no-application. This can be a great opportunity for people who could not afford to go to college.

Flexibility to explore

Since Coursera offers online courses in a variety of areas, it is a useful way for students to “try out” a specific discipline that you are interested in studying in college or graduate school. These areas include the hard sciences, art history, the humanities, information technology, and healthcare.

Job opportunities

Despite these opportunities, Coursera’s online degrees don’t always carry the same weight in the job market as a traditional degree. Before enrolling, you should extensively research your program to ensure that it will help you reach your career goals.

Coursera financial aid & scholarships

Because Coursera is a hosting platform, the majority of fees charged for their courses go to the university or corporation who designed the courses. As a result, most of the scholarships for Coursera courses are from external organizations. But Coursera does offer one major scholarship: they have partnered with the University of Illinois’ Giles School of Business to fund need and diversity-based scholarships for students pursuing an iMBA, iMSA, or iMSM. These scholarships will pay for 70% of students’ fees. This brings the total cost of the iMBA program down to $7,171.20 .

Free courses for college students

Coursera also offers free courses to any current college or university student . All you have to do to take advantage of the offer is enter your student email address. In addition to the free class, current students also have access to unlimited Guided Projects . These are shorter exercises meant to impart specific, job-relevant skills.

Even without a scholarship, Coursera programs typically cost only a fraction of their on-campus counterparts. For example, full tuition for the iMBA program mentioned above is only $23,904. An on-campus MBA can often cost two to three times this amount.

How to find scholarships through Coursera

Although Coursera does not offer a wide breadth of scholarships, their website includes resources to help match students with available opportunities.

  • To find scholarships, visit the degree page that interests you, and click on “Tuition & Financing.”
  • This page will contain a subheading called “Financial Aid” which outlines scholarship opportunities offered by the university or organization that designed the course

The “Financial Aid” section will also tell you if the course you are considering is eligible for federal financial aid. Many of the degree programs offered by accredited universities will be eligible for federal loans, and some may even qualify for the Pell Grant . Make sure to check this section for every course or program you consider, as eligibility may vary by program.

Don’t forget about external scholarships

Once you have explored the opportunities posted on Coursera’s website, it’s time to search for other external scholarships. As online learning has increased in popularity, so have scholarships for online students. Try searching for scholarships that apply to your life situation. There are scholarships for:

  • Online students
  • Part-time students
  • Nontraditional students

Between the opportunities posted on Coursera and the scholarships on our site, it is possible to obtain an affordable online degree or certification. Remember to tap all the resources that are available for you, and good luck as you begin your search.

Alternatives to Coursera

If you are looking to earn an online degree or certification, Coursera is a great place to start, but it’s not the only option. You should also be sure to check out other sites such as edX , and remember that many prominent schools with online campuses host their own programs. So, you can try gathering a list of schools that interest you, and research which ones offer online degrees.

In order to maximize your financial aid possibilities, be sure to look beyond Coursera and send out multiple applications to ensure that you are getting the best possible deal.

How to write a financial need statement for your scholarship application (with examples!)

So you’re applying for a scholarship that asks you about your financial need. What do you say? How honest or specific should you be? What is TMI? In this article, we break down how to pen an awesome financial need scholarship essay or statement.

What to include in a financial need scholarship essay

Template to structure your financial need scholarship essay, introduction: your basic profile, body: your financial situation and hardships, conclusion: how you would benefit from this scholarship, was this financial need essay for a college financial aid application , now, reuse that same essay to apply for more scholarships, additional resources to help you write your financial need scholarship essay.

Writing a financial need scholarship essay

Many scholarships and college financial aid awards are “need-based,” given to students whose financial situation requires additional support. That’s why one of the most common college scholarship essays is a statement of financial need. This might be very explicit (“Explain your financial need”), somewhat explicit (“Describe your financial situation”), or quite open-ended (“Explain why you need this scholarship”).

In all cases, scholarship providers want to get a sense of your family’s financial picture: what your family income is, if you personally contribute to it (do you have a job?), and how much additional money you need to attend your target college (your “financial gap”).

If the essay prompt is a bit more open-ended (“Explain how this scholarship would help you”), your essay should probably be a combination of a financial need statement and a career goals / academic goals essay.  That’s because you want to show how the award will help you financially and in your academic or career goals.

Usually this statement of financial need is a pretty short scholarship essay (150-300 words), so unlike a college essay or personal statement where you have ample word count to tell anecdotes, you’ll likely need to get right to the point.

Be sure to include:

  • If you are an underrepresented group at college, for instance, part of an ethnic minority or the first in your family to go to college
  • Any relevant family circumstances, like if your parents are immigrants or refugees, as well as your parents’ occupation and how many children/family members they support financially
  • How you are currently paying for college, including what you personally are doing to contribute financially (like working student jobs)
  • What financial challenges/difficulties your family is facing, for instance, if a parent recently lost their job
  • How you would benefit from the scholarship–including your academic and career goals (if word count allows)

Also remember to write in an optimistic tone. Writing about your financial situation or hardships might not be the most positive thing to share. But you can turn it around with an optimistic tone by writing about how these challenges have taught you resiliency and grit.

Student writing a financial need scholarship essay

Give a short introduction to who you are, highlighting any family characteristics that might make you part of an underrepresented group at college.

“I am a first-generation American and the first in my family to go to college. My family moved from El Salvador to New York when I was seven years old, to escape the violence there.”

Example 2:

“I am from a working-class family in Minnesota. My family never had a lot, but we pooled our efforts together to make ends meet. My parents both worked full-time (my father as a mechanic, my mother as a receptionist at the local gym), while my siblings and I all worked weekend jobs to contribute to the family income.”

Dive into the details. How are you currently planning to pay for college? The idea here is to show that you and your family have made a good-faith effort to earn enough money to pay your tuition, but that it has simply not been enough.

Make sure you describe your parents’ occupation, any savings (like a 529 College Savings Account), and any student jobs. You might also discuss any sudden changes in fortune (e.g. parent fell ill or lost their job) that have ruined your original financial plans.

Example

As immigrants with limited English, my parents have had to accept low-paying jobs. My father is an Uber driver, and my mother is a housekeeper. They earn just enough to pay our rent and put food on the table, so I’ve always known they could not help me pay for college.  So I’ve been proactive about earning and saving my own money. Since age 11, I’ve worked odd jobs (like mowing my neighbors’ lawns). At age 16, I started working at the mall after school and on weekends. Through all these jobs, I’ve saved about $3000. But even with my financial aid grants, I need to pay $8000 more per year to go to college.

Bring it home by wrapping up your story.  Explain how you plan to use the financial aid if you’re awarded this scholarship. How will you benefit from this award? What will you put the money toward, and how will it help you achieve your academic and/or career goals?

Scholarship review boards want to know that their money will be put to good use, supporting a student who has clear plans for the future, and the motivation and determination to make those plans a reality. This is like a shortened, one-paragraph version of the “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” essay .

Winning $5000 would help me close the financial gap and take less in student loans. This is particularly important for me because I plan to study social work and eventually work in a role to support my community. However, since these jobs are not well paid, repaying significant student loans would be difficult. Your scholarship would allow me to continue down this path, to eventually support my community, without incurring debt I can’t afford.
My plan is to study human biology at UC San Diego, where I have been admitted, and eventually pursue a career as a Nurse-Practitioner. I know that being pre-med will be a real academic challenge, and this scholarship would help me focus on those tough classes, rather than worrying about how to pay for them. The $2000 award would be equivalent to about 150 hours of working at a student job. That’s 150 hours I can instead focus on studying, graduating, and achieving my goals.

Sometimes this financial need statement isn’t for an external scholarship. Instead, it’s for your college financial aid office.

In that case, you’re usually writing this statement for one of two reasons:

  • You’re writing an appeal letter , to request additional financial aid, after your original financial aid offer wasn’t enough. In this case, you’ll want to make sure you’re being extra specific about your finances.
  • You’re applying for a specific endowed scholarship that considers financial need. In this case, your financial need essay can be quite similar to what we’ve outlined above.

Now that you’ve written a killer financial need scholarship essay, you have one of the most common scholarship essays ready on hand, to submit to other scholarships too.

You can sign up for a free Going Merry account today to get a personalized list of hundreds of scholarships matched to your profile. You can even save essays (like this one!) to reuse in more than one application.

Coursera’s Financial Aid: What it is and who is benefiting

October 23, 2015

When Coursera began offering our first paid product, Course Certificates, we also committed to supporting a comprehensive financial aid option. We knew that financial aid would be critical to achieving our mission of enabling all individuals, regardless of their financial means, to access the world’s best education.

We recently approved our 100,000th financial aid application of the year. As we pass this exciting milestone, we wanted to share an update on how Financial Aid works, who benefits, and how we plan to improve the program to help more learners achieve their goals.

What is Financial Aid?

Coursera offers financial aid for learners who could benefit from our paid products, but cannot afford to pay the associated fee. Learners accepted into the program are granted a fee waiver that allows them to access all of the course content and complete all work required to earn a Certificate. To receive Coursera Financial Aid, learners must complete a brief application describing their financial circumstances and motivations for taking the course.

A recent survey showed that less than half of of our learners knew about the program, meaning not everyone who can benefit from Financial Aid is aware of it. To address this issue, we recently developed a new design for our payment page designed to raise the visibility of Financial Aid. When we applied the new design to a few courses, we doubled the number of learners receiving Financial Aid. This result suggests that financial aid can help many more learners benefit from our paid offerings. We are now working to increase the visibility of Financial Aid in a similar way across our entire website.

Who is benefiting from Financial Aid?

Specifically, is Financial Aid reaching the learners who need it most? In reviewing data from our Financial Aid applications, we found that two facts stood out:

  • 60 percent of Financial Aid applications come from learners in countries considered to have developing economies, despite the fact that those learners represent only 38 percent of total course enrollments.
  • Learners from developing economies are about seven times as likely as learners in higher-income countries to apply for and receive Financial Aid.

These results tell us that our Financial Aid program, coupled with top-quality courses, is truly changing lives around the world. In addition, a recent survey revealed that lower income course completers on Coursera are considerably more likely to report tangible career and educational benefits. We’ve heard accounts from many Financial Aid recipients who’ve gained access to new opportunities after earning Course and Specialization Certificates – opportunities that had resounding positive effects not just on their own lives, but also on their communities.

One of those learners is Michael Tumwesigye of Kampala, Uganda . After receiving a BA, Michael Tumwesigye started teaching in Uganda and Kenya. In 2007, he went back to his hometown, Kampala, to help his aunt start a nonprofit called “In Need Home” — an organization dedicated to the care, protection, and education of orphans and vulnerable children. He dreamed of going back to school to acquire the skills he needed to accelerate the program’s curriculum, but had limited financial resources. Searching for ways to improve his situation, he found Coursera.

After browsing the catalog, he applied for Financial Aid and earned certificates for several courses, including the Virtual Teacher Program Specialization offered by The University of California, Irvine. He proudly lists all of his Course Certificates on his LinkedIn profile .

Spanish launch

With the skills he learned on Coursera, he was able to start a social enterprise called Snacks for Education (S4E) to produce and package snacks like roasted peanuts, plantain chips, and more to sell at local supermarkets. The proceeds are used to give educational support to orphans living in the slums. In addition, he was able to create an association for teachers called Country Society for Technology Education (COSOTED) where over 300 teachers in the region use face-to-face workshops to integrate technology in education.

Michael says, “Thanks to Coursera and the Financial Aid program, I feel that I have done something for my country.”

We are thrilled to learn through stories like Michael’s that Financial Aid is helping those most in need of access to the world’s best education, and we are excited to see those impacts reflected more broadly in our data, as well. Why are you applying for Financial Aid? (150 words minimum required)

Hello, my name is "your name" and I live in "your country", the country in development. I'm applying for Financial Aid for the course "Course name" because I do not have any special source of income and I don't earn enough money and I can't afford the full tuition at this time of my life and career. Receiving Financial Aid for this course will help me get valuable knowledge in "write your career neme like machine learening" , and i searching for a job from a long time for earning money for taking this course, and i not find yet, and the time goes on, and receiving financial aid will allow me to focus on my studies and by taking it to allow to take off a paid internship and can take another course in machine learning path . I want to invest in my career and my education, but at this moment I can only invest my time to increase my knowledge and advance in my career and not the money. Hopefully this will change in the upcoming years because I'm ambitious, I want to increase my programming knowledge and new technologies, I'm eager to work and to advance in my career.

How will taking this course help you achieve your career goals? (150 words minimum required)

I have a solid background in "math and algorithms and problem-solving skills", so i eager to learn "machine learning" and that's the course the first step to me to making good projects that help the humanity for an easy life and solve the big problem. My main career goal is to learn every day, i really want to learn and to progress in my career. "Programming" requires constant learning and improving, taking a course can help me advance in my knowledge.

I plan on gaining additional skills by taking related classes and continuing my involvement with a variety of professional associations and I noticed that there a lot of company provides in internship and jobs in the related filled, and I would certainly be interested in taking it and improving my self to be on of the pioneer of "machine learning and deep learning." There are many opportunities in this field that the candidate can join but must have good knowledge to join these opportunities, so I see that this course with good tutorials and exercises to join me in the world's largest companies and creativity in this area

If you answered no, please help us understand why.?

Because there are alot of developing countries the average rate of income is low and not enough personal needs for home so it isn't enough to get paid courses, and we need a lot of free courses for learning and improving ourselves and hlep the humanity and society.
