IELTS Topics: Advertising [With Speaking and Writing Sample Answers]

Advertising is a fact of life for almost all humans in the twenty-first century. As such, it is also a possible IELTS topic . In this exam, you might find questions about advertising in any part – speaking, writing, listening, or reading.

Today, I am going to explain a little about advertising and IELTS . I will talk about how it could arise in the exam and what you should do to give a great answer. I will also cover some aspects of IELTS vocabulary.

Advertising Vocabulary for IELTS Students

First of all, let’s look at some useful words and phrases that might help you in your next IELTS exam. These are all related to the topic of advertising.

Brand(noun) a type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular nameThey are very protective over their brand and will sue anyone who develops anything similar.
Campaign(noun) an organized course of action to achieve a goalThey have an amazing online ad campaign right now. Everyone’s talking about it!
Commercial(noun) a television or radio advertisementI saw a great commercial at lunchtime.
Slogan(noun) a short and striking or memorable phrase used in advertisingLet’s meet this weekend to come up with a great slogan for our next ad campaign.
Viral(adjective) suddenly and widely popularNo one had even heard of this company two months ago but after their ad campaign went viral they suddenly blew up!

Here is a PPT of vocabulary related to the IELTS topic of advertising. I made this a few years ago when I was teaching IELTS in China.

Advertisement vs Advert vs Ad

Because advertisements are so common in daily life, we tend to shorten the word to make it easier to say and spell. Instead of “advertisement,” we usually say “advert” or “ad.” The meaning is the same in each case, but they are shorter and easier to use.

However, remember that for IELTS writing you should use a more formal kind of English and this means using the longer form of words. Thus, you would be better avoiding “ad” and saying “advertisement” instead.

An Important Note on Pronunciation

The word “advertisement” is pronounced differently in British and American English. In British English, we place emphasis on the second syllable, but in America they say it with an emphasis on the first. You can read more about it at the Cambridge Dictionary website .

One final note on vocabulary: The word “ad” is short for “advertisement” but “add” means to put things together, such as numbers. Also, “ad” is a noun” while “add” is a verb. These words are pronounced the same but spelled differently. Do not confuse these in your IELTS writing test!

  • Just add the milk to the flour and then mix them together. You can add the egg later.
  • I say a funny ad on TV earlier today. A gorilla was playing the drums!

IELTS Speaking

In the IELTS speaking test, you might be asked about advertisements. This could occur in any of the three parts. For part one, it would be a pretty straightforward question about your experiences or opinions. For example:

Q: Have you ever bought something because you saw it advertised on TV or the internet? A: Yeah, sure. I think most people have. Off the top of my head, I can think of a miniature tripod that I saw online last year. I looked up some reviews and then bought it, but I wouldn’t have known about it if it weren’t for the ad.

In part two, you would be asked to describe an advertisement . There are various possible cue cards but this is one that you might encounter:

Describe an advertisement you like. You should say: – what type of advertisement it is – what product it advertises – when you first saw it and explain why you like it and think that this advertisement is effective.

You can watch this advert and then look at my sample band 9 answer below.

Sample Answer

Like most people, I have seen countless adverts in my life and many of them have stuck in my mind, but the one that I can think of now is for John West’s canned salmon. It was a TV commercial that I saw a long time ago and it was really funny so I always remembered it.

The premise of the commercial was highlighting the efforts that fishermen go to in order to bring back salmon for their customers. However, instead of showing this in a serious light the company opted to depict a fisherman comically fighting a bear! The fight is choreographed so that it is clearly fake, as though the bear understands Kungfu. In the end, the fisherman beats the bear and steals its salmon.

I really like this advert for the same reason I like many others: because they are so funny that they are memorable. I think this is a very effective method of advertising. Traditionally, companies show off the quality of the product but nowadays there is so much competition that it is better just to get your brand into people’s minds. Even if the commercial has nothing to do with the product, it could still boost sales.

Notes on my Sample Answer

This is a pretty straightforward answer and it took me 01:20 to read it, which would be fine for IELTS. There is no particularly difficult vocabulary here except the word “choreographed.” However, this word was only important for my answer and would not necessarily help you with yours.

I have switched back and forth between “commercial” and “advert(isement)” in order to vary my language but please note that they are not always interchangeable. Make sure that you only use “commercial” for TV adverts.

IELTS Essays about Advertisement

Of course, the topic of advertisements could also appear in IELTS writing. There are many possibilities for this but I think that the ethics of advertising would be the most likely to arise. This means that you would be asked about advertising to children or issues like false advertising. (These topics could also occur in IELTS speaking part 3.)

Here is an example question:

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

This is a pretty simple task. You have to talk about two perspectives:

Advertising influences people to buy things.Advertising does not really influence people anymore.

You also need to give your opinion and make it clear throughout the essay.

Here is my sample answer to this question:

Sample Band 9 Answer

Since the early twentieth century, advertising has held tremendous sway over people’s lives. Some people think that it persuades us to buy things, but others claim that it has lost its effectiveness. This essay will look at both views but ultimately conclude that advertising is still as powerful as ever.

To begin with, people argue that advertising has lost its impact because it is so prevalent, and there is certainly some basis for thinking this. It is hard to deny that most people nowadays are aware of advertising and that many of them make efforts to avoid it. When using websites or apps, it is so common to see adverts littering the page that the average person can basically ignore them, which obviously diminishes their power to some extent.

However, it should be clear that the advertisers are aware of this and constantly innovate in order to attract attention. Although people are now aware of them, adverts still have a strong influence over what people buy because the people who create them are incredibly gifted at implanting subtle messages. Data harvesting by search engines and social media sites has also made advertising much more targeted, allowing companies to pitch products to specific demographics rather than attempting to show their product to the greatest number of people. This means that even people who avoid adverts are likely to be influenced after seeing one. Advertising is a science that is developing quickly and will continue to dictate our shopping habits for years to come.

In conclusion, people are generally more aware of advertising than they used to be and many try to avoid it, but that does not mean that it has lost its power. Adverts still exert influence over our lives because they are more intelligently designed than they used to be.

Advertising Essays – Sample #2

Here is another IELTS writing task 2 question about advertising. This one is really interesting so I wanted to include it here:

Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

While our first example was very straightforward, I find that this one is much more challenging. It has some subtleties that people might overlook. We can come to a better understanding by paraphrasing it:

To what extent do you agree that people buy things because of advertising?

My personal opinion is that people buy things partially because of effective advertising. I do not believe that it is purely because of this, but I think I could write a good essay that leans towards agreement.

Remember: You can give a strong opinion, a weak opinion, or a balanced opinion . Just be consistent throughout your essay!

As globalization sweeps the world in the twenty-first century, people appear to have become more materialistic. Expensive consumer goods produced by companies like Apple and Nike are sold in all corners of the globe, and for many people they are must-have items. Some people believe that this is all down to advertising rather than actual necessity. This essay will argue in support of that position.

It should be abundantly clear that many of the popular consumer goods that dominate markets around the world are not items of objective importance, but rather ones of purely superficial appeal. People need things like food and clothing, as well as some items that enable them to work or travel, but certain products are just luxury items. Take, for example, the iPhone. There are countless other devices on the market that can fulfill the main functions of an iPhone without the jaw-dropping price tag. However, in almost every country, people want to own one of these status symbols. The reason is simply that it has been marketed well, and owning one makes a person look successful and wealthy.

If the real needs of society were reflected in sales, rather than the popularity of certain luxury items, our economies would look very different. Fashionable brands would not be as wealthy as ones making affordable, simple products. Yet it is those items that are carefully advertised on TV, on the internet, and at sports events, which captivate people and cause them to make unwise purchases or form irrational brand loyalties. Look at how Apple overtook Microsoft, or how Nike easily outsells any humble, local shoemaker.

In conclusion, it is clear that sales are dictated not by a product’s necessity, but rather by its appeal to consumers, and this appeal is created through slick advertising campaigns.

Advertising in IELTS Reading and Listening

It is pretty difficult to predict the sort of material you would encounter for these parts of the exam because the possibilities are nearly endless. However, you can prepare by going on news websites (like the BBC ) to read or listen to articles about adverts. This will help you learn new vocabulary, perfect your spelling or pronunciation, and get ideas to use in your own IELTS answers.

Advertising is all around us, it is an unavoidable part of everyone’s life. Some people say that advertising is a positive part of our lives while others say it is a negative one. Discuss both views and include your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words.

On the other hand, there are some good sides to advertising. For instance, it compares the prices of many companies which the consumer. Besides, it really see more products which we unless the TV or Radio advertised them. , it breaks our daily routine and allows us to see new faces and learn the language better with the help of the daily updates they deliver through .

In conclusion, as we can see there are many aspects to this . I feel that we gain no benefits at all from advertisement, it plays buy more things that they do not need it at all.

Your arguments are good and the paragraphs are set out well, however, you must be careful about making assertive statements, e.g. ‘ it motivates the psychological point in everyone’. How do you know that all advertisements do motivate every single person, for instance? Overall, this is a good essay, well done.

A majority of people are prompted by advertising to purchase all kinds of consumer goods. This essay will discuss the issues associated with this and propose several solutions to avoid these unwanted outcomes.

An obvious problem of buying products through advertisements is the uncertainty over the quality of the purchased items, ranging from fake, faulty, or low-quality products to even hazards. So-called ‘hand products’ such as cosmetics and medicine, imported into a country by individuals via airways, are usually claimed on social media as standardized or approved when their quality has, in fact, yet to be inspected by the authorities. Another consequence stemming from advertising-based purchases is debt. Thousands of people, especially young workers, in major cities struggle to refrain from buying fashion products or electronic devices, despite their unaffordable prices.

One approach to preventing these consequences is to select only official and prestigious suppliers. Thus, one can avoid spending huge sums only to receive low-quality or hazardous products. One more recommendable solution is the ‘50/30/20 proportion,’ in which no more than 30% of one’s monthly income should be allocated for pastimes, including entertainment, traveling, and shopping, with the surplus (20%) converted into savings after essential expenditures (50%). Ultimately, individuals should desist as much as possible from surfing social media, well-known as a major channel for advertising. Now that one is aware of the influence these platforms exert on consumer behaviors, one should instead spend their leisure time doing physical activities or reading books.

In conclusion, buying consumer products through advertising can cause quality-related issues of varying seriousness as well as significant money losses. To tackle these problems, individuals should make sure they are selective about suppliers, employ a reasonable spending scale, and finally, minimize using social media.

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasize that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

In recent years, marketers have been inclined to feature the freshness of their products in advertisements, making them much more tempting to the public. This trend is principally attributable to the companies’ sales target and, in my opinion, may bring about various adverse impacts.

In essence , advertisers opt to portray their products as novel to lure the audience and provoke false expectations, directly boosting the companies’ profits. For instance, it is reported that consumer-centered ads for nutritional supplements are the main contributing factor to the overestimation of the medicines’ efficacy and the ignorance about their after-effects . While the voice-overs on TV reveal that they barely possess the treating functions, the visual presentations and videos depict the opposite, showing the glamorous rejuvenation of ill-stricken patients. Consequently, business owners may earn much more than those who do not adopt this approach in misleading the viewers.

Notwithstanding the monetary benefit of these marketing schemes , they can spur excessive consumption , posing numerous insidious threats to society and the Earth’s environment. Take the mobile industry as a prime example , where large enterprises, including Samsung and Apple, annually apply manipulative copywriting lines and alluring words describing groundbreaking innovations, all-new versions, and exclusive applications to induce consumers to purchase the latest iPhones or GalaxyS. Such tactics drive malleable watchers like teenagers and young adults to desperately ask their parents for new phones and possessions, a significant catalyst for a more materialistic worldview. Besides, it has become the norm that consumers tend to abandon the obsolete when acquiring new products. For this reason, this inclination, without a doubt, generates an incredible amount of waste and has severe repercussion s for the environment. 2. Potential customers (n): khách hàng tiềm năng

Cụm danh từ trên dùng để chỉ đối tượng khách hàng có khả năng sẽ mua sản phẩm hoặc sử dụng dịch vụ của doanh nghiệp. Với cụm danh từ này, bạn đọc có thể sử dụng kèm với hai động từ là attract và reach như bên dưới:

attract (v): to cause something to come toward something else, or to cause a person or animal to become interested in someone or something (Nguồn: Cambridge dictionary): thu hút

Ví dụ: It is of great importance for businessed to attract their potential customers, as this will help with boosting their sale.

reach (v): to come to somebody’s attention (Nguồn: Oxford Learner's Dictionaries): tiếp cận

Ví dụ: Advertisements help companies to reach their potential customers.

3. Impulse buying (n): sự mua sắm bốc đồng

Từ điển Oxford định nghĩa cụm danh từ này như sau: buying goods without planning to do so in advance, and without thinking about it carefully (mua mà không suy nghĩ hoặc lên kế hoạch trước). Ngoài impulse buying, bạn đọc cũng có thể thay thế bằng impulse purchase với nghĩa và cách dùng tương tự.

Ví dụ: Advertisements obviously leads to the impulse buying/impulse purchase among consumers, in which they purchase a large number of unnecessary items without careful decision.

Lưu ý với danh từ impulse, bạn đọc còn có thể sử dụng collocation "on impulse" với nghĩa làm việc gì đó bốc đồng, không nghĩ kỹ.

Ví dụ: My friend always act on impulse. She never stops to think straight.

4. An upsurge in (n): đột ngột tăng

Theo Oxford, danh từ upsure mang nghĩa "a sudden large increase in something" (tạm dịch: sự tăng đột ngột ở đối tượng nào đó". Bạn đọc lưu ý collocation với danh từ này" an upsurge in something"

Ví dụ: There is an upsurge in advertisements aimed at children, which may brings about several drawbacks.

5. Pay heed to (v): chú ý / lưu ý

Từ heed được sử dụng trong cụm với chức năng là danh từ, mang nghĩa là sự lưu ý/sự chú ý. Với chức năng này, bạn đọc có thể sử dụng các collocation như sau với nghĩa hoàn toàn tương đương nhau: pay heed to - give heed to - take heed of, theo sau đó là một danh từ hoặc danh động từ (V-ing).

7. Pester for (v): vòi vĩnh

Động từ pester được sử dụng để chỉ sự vòi vĩnh của trẻ em, nằng nặc đòi bố mẹ làm gì đó, được định nghĩa trong Cambridge như sau: to behave in an annoying manner towards someone by doing or asking for something repeatedly.

Kickstarting the writing process in the summer can give students a critical advantage in the admissions process, allowing them more time to brainstorm, edit, and polish standout essays. However, as students begin drafting their essays this summer, they should bear in mind that selecting the right topic is crucial to writing a successful essay. Particularly for students with Ivy League aspirations, submitting an essay that is cliche, unoriginal, or inauthentic can make the difference between standing out to admissions officers or blending into the sea of other applicants.

As ambitious students embark on the college application process, here are the personal statement topics they should avoid:

1. The Trauma Dump

Many students overcome significant hurdles by the time they begin the college application process, and some assume that the grisliest and most traumatic stories will attract attention and sympathy from admissions committees. While vulnerability can be powerful, sharing overly personal or sensitive information can make readers uncomfortable and shift focus away from a student’s unique strengths. Students should embrace authenticity and be honest about the struggles they have faced on their path to college, while still recognizing that the personal statement is a professional piece of writing, not a diary entry. 3. The Superhero Narrative

Ivy League and other top colleges are looking for students who are introspective and teachable—no applicant is perfect (admissions officers know this!). Therefore, it’s crucial that students be aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and open about the areas in which they hope to grow. They should avoid grandiose narratives in which they cast themselves as flawless heroes. While students should seek to put their best foot forward, depicting themselves as protagonists who single-handedly resolve complex issues can make them appear exaggerated and lacking in humility. For instance, rather than telling the story about being the sole onlooker to stand up for a peer being bullied at the lunch table, perhaps a student could share about an experience that emboldened them to advocate for themselves and others. Doing so will add dimension and dynamism to their essay, rather than convey a static story of heroism.

Similarly, many students feel compelled to declare their intention to solve global issues like world hunger or climate change. While noble, these proclamations can come across as unrealistic and insincere, and they can distract from the tangible achievements and experiences that a student brings to the table. Instead, applicants should focus on demonstrable steps they’ve taken or plan to take within their local community to enact positive change, demonstrating their commitment and practical approach to making a difference. For instance, instead of stating a desire to eradicate poverty, students could describe their extended involvement in a local charity and how it has helped them to discover their values and actualize their passions.

5. The Sports Story

While sports can teach valuable lessons, essays that focus solely on athletic achievements or the importance of a particular game can be overdone and lack depth. Admissions officers have read countless essays about students scoring the winning goal, dealing with the hardship of an injury, or learning teamwork from sports. Students should keep in mind that the personal essay should relay a story that only they can tell—perhaps a student has a particularly unique story about bringing competitive pickleball to their high school and uniting unlikely friend groups or starting a community initiative to repair and donate golf gear for students who couldn’t otherwise afford to play. However, if their sports-related essay could have been written by any high school point guard or soccer team captain, it’s time to brainstorm new ideas.

6. The Pick-Me Monologue

Students may feel the need to list their accomplishments and standout qualities in an effort to appear impressive to Ivy League admissions officers. This removes any depth, introspection, and creativity from a student’s essay and flattens their experiences to line items on a resume. Admissions officers already have students’ Activities Lists and resumes; the personal statement should add texture and dimension to their applications, revealing aspects of their character, values and voice not otherwise obvious through the quantitative aspects of their applications. Instead of listing all of their extracurricular involvements, students should identify a particularly meaningful encounter or event they experienced through one of the activities that matters most to them, and reflect on the ways in which their participation impacted their development as a student and person.

7. The Pandemic Sob Story

The Covid-19 pandemic was a traumatic and formative experience for many students, and it is therefore understandable that applicants draw inspiration from these transformative years as they choose their essay topics. However, while the pandemic affected individuals differently, an essay about the difficulties faced during this time will likely come across as unoriginal and generic. Admissions officers have likely read hundreds of essays about remote learning challenges, social isolation, and the general disruptions caused by Covid-19. These narratives can start to blend together, making it difficult for any single essay to stand out. Instead of centering the essay on the pandemic's challenges, students should consider how they adapted, grew, or made a positive impact during this time. For example, rather than writing about the difficulties of remote learning, a student could describe how they created a virtual study group to support classmates struggling with online classes. Most Americans who vow to leave over an election never do. Will this year be different?

Deirdre Roney wanted an escape plan – a place to go if her darkest fears about America’s democracy came to pass.

The Los Angeles attorney and activist for immigrant and voting rights has worried about a rise of authoritarianism ever since Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016. As this fall’s election drew closer, that anxiety only grew.

Trump has vowed “ retribution” if he wins and a “ bloodbath ” if he loses. Though she says she’s not a high-profile activist, Roney fears political persecution could become a reality. “I would challenge you to find somebody who's as depressed and dark and scared as I am,” she said.

So, this summer, she secured her escape hatch. She and her husband obtained dual citizenship in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda in exchange for a development fund investment of about $100,000, she said – a barrier-free overseas refuge to use if she feels unsafe.

“I wanted us to have a place to go,” she said. “I wanted a Plan B.”

The idea of moving to another country to protest a presidential administration or political policy isn’t new – think the Vietnam War or even vows to move following the reelection of President George W. Bush. Even Trump once joked he might leave if Joe Biden was elected. 

Typically, relatively few who vow to leave actually make the move, said Amanda Klekowski von Koppenfels, a University of Kent migration scholar and expert on Americans abroad .

But this year, as voter anxiety hits the red zone ahead of a divisive election contest between Trump and Biden, there are signs that Americans from a cross-section of society are taking a more serious look at the exits.

The percentage of U.S. citizens who would settle abroad if they were able reached 34% in a March 26 poll by Monmouth University, up from 12% since 1995. Monmouth polling officials said they believe the political rancor of recent years likely helped fuel the rise.

For some current and former members of the U.S. law enforcement and intelligence community, threats to jail political opponents are driving them to weigh whether they may have to leave to avoid being illegally detained, according to a former FBI director.

A recent survey by the publisher International Living found that 65% of more than 2,700 readers said that concerns about the political climate prompted them to accelerate plans to relocate overseas.

Henley & Partners, a large global residence and citizenship advisory firm, reported this year that wealthy Americans are pursuing backup citizenship or residence abroad at record levels. Motivations for its clients include political risk along with tax or business reasons.

Several other firms that help Americans live or work abroad told USA TODAY that political uncertainty is driving a spike not just in inquiries and but in concrete efforts to secure visas, homes, dual citizenship or foreign work permits – whether to move or to set up a contingency plan. 

David Lesperance, a Canadian tax and immigration adviser whose firm helps people secure dual citizenships or residency abroad, said most of his U.S. clients now cite concerns including political polarization and deadlock, antisemitism, gun violence, threats to LGBTQ+ rights, fear of rule by “the other party” and retribution by a Trump administration. 

And for some, such moves are also easier in the era of remote work.

“What’s different today is people are acting on it,” Lesperance said, adding that the Supreme Court ruling relating to presidential immunity has further ratcheted up concerns. “They sense the danger is real.”

Whether significant numbers of Americans actually pull up stakes is far from certain. Moving abroad brings the challenges of obtaining a visa and leaving behind family obligations. And some view such sentiments as an overreaction at home when other countries also face new political turmoil.

But it’s an idea that is a growing topic of conversation, especially after a presidential debate that raised new questions about Biden’s suitability and Trump’s repeated falsehoods . Even before that, some said, the urge to escape has spurred calls for advice to friends living overseas.

Justin Knepper, 48, moved from California to Portugal in 2020. Now, he said, “I would say at least 50% of our friends are considering moving” with politics at least a factor for most.

Moving to South Africa: ‘We’ve got to get out of here’ 

Ted Baumann’s move last year came after he grew alienated from both political parties.

The 63-year-old worked in nonprofit housing and financial publishing while living in Decatur, Georgia, near Atlanta, with his wife, a prekindergarten teacher, and their daughter.

He watched with concern as reactionary politics gathered steam amid President Barack Obama’s tenure. He was stunned when Senate Republicans violated a norm by blocking Obama from filling a Supreme Court seat. He said it seemed like “Third-World style politics.”

He worried about how easily some could rationalize such moves. Then Trump won. All around him, he thought political debate had become increasingly vitriolic. 

“I remember waking up the next week and thinking, ‘We’ve got to get out of here,’” he said.

It wouldn’t be a difficult move. Baumann’s wife is originally from South Africa. And he’d previously lived for a time and already had dual citizenship.

But they were settled into their own Georgia community. They both had good jobs and their daughter was headed to high school. And then the pandemic hit. 

While voters had narrowly elected Biden in 2020, it rattled him that nearly half of America supported Trump’s ideas including stolen-election conspiracies that fueled the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

But Baumann – who said he doesn’t identify with either party but leans left – wasn’t thrilled with Democrats either.   

He thought liberals were overly focused on “identity politics, gender, race and sexual orientation – which are all important,” he said, and gave too little attention to pressing economic and other issues.

Over time, he lost faith that elected bodies could tackle everyday issues.

“It doesn't really matter which side you're from. It’s the inability to govern and to legislate and to address issues,” he said. “Because eventually, these unsolved issues are going to come back to bite you. You're going to run out of Social Security, you're going run out of health care for the elderly.”

By 2022, he and his wife decided, “This is not where we want to raise our daughter, this is not where we want to be,” he said, putting plans in motion to move to South Africa. 

There were economic considerations involved in their move, too: The cost of living, as well as health care, would be lower. Last year, they left behind their life in the Atlanta area for Cape Town. His daughter entered high school there and “couldn’t be happier,” he said. Baumann now works remotely.

To be sure, South Africa has its share of political struggles and problems, he said. But it felt like a place moving in a positive direction. America, by contrast, seemed to be moving backward.

Moving to Spain: Complicated reasons for going abroad 

Marsha Scarbrough arrived in Spain in early 2017.

Not long before that, she had given an interview to a Spanish reporter back home in the U.S. and found herself on the front page of a Spanish newspaper – dubbed “La Primera Exiliada,” the first exile, following Trump’s election.

Though she opposed Trump, Scarbrough moved at age 70 for a mix of reasons including affordable retirement, less expensive health care and a desire to live abroad, she said. She also wanted to be away from gun violence and other problems in the U.S., she said.

That’s true for most U.S. residents who migrate overseas for multiple reasons such as jobs, spouses or to study, said Klekowski von Koppenfels, the University of Kent expert. But she said politics can play into it. 

“Back when George Bush's handling of the Iraq War was a big political issue in the United States, I spoke with a number of people who had always meant to move to Europe and had always thought of studying in Europe. And then, as the Iraq War rolled around, they were increasingly unhappy with the politics around that. They thought, OK, now's the time for me to go ahead and move,’” she said.

A similar dynamic is in play for some currently considering a move.

Marco Permunian, founder of Italian Citizenship Assistance, has seen inquiries triple this year reaching as many as 250 a day, most U.S. residents looking to relocate, get dual citizenship based on lineage, or obtain visas to work, study, or retire in Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

He said a “general feeling of instability throughout the country, both politically and socially” is what’s driving many of his clients to seek to move to Europe now. A minority of them are ready to go immediately, he said, while others “want to have the option to relocate if they have to.”

In France, Adrian Leeds, whose company helps Americans find real estate, said her business has doubled each year since the pandemic. While some Americans are worried about far-right gains in France , she said that pales to clients citing the “fear of Donald Trump and the disaster in the U.S. when it comes to health care, gun control, women's rights, etc.,” she said. 

Jennifer Stevens, editor at the move-abroad publication International Living, which conducted the survey showing rising political concerns among readers, has seen it too. 

“People who already had an idea in the back of their minds that they might like to go abroad sometime,” she said, “They're crafting a Plan B because they feel like they just might need it if things go sideways in November and beyond.”

But will they adopt Plan B? Klekowski von Koppenfels said a survey she helped to commission didn’t show a significant increase in emigration aspirations between 2014 and 2019 despite an increase in public statements about it.

Gallup found that during the start of the Trump Administration in 2017 and 2018, a record 16% of Americans said they would like to permanently move to another country if they could. That was higher than the average levels during the Bush (11%) or Obama administration (10%). 

Gallup said that while it didn’t ask respondents about political leanings, the surge in Americans' desire to migrate in those years came among groups that typically leaned Democratic and had disapproved of Trump: women, young Americans and people in lower-income groups.  

The percentage of respondents in later Gallup polls who said they'd like to move abroad permanently dipped to 13% in 2020 and rose to 17% in 2023, according to data provided by Gallup.

In March, the Monmouth poll found that of the 34% who said they would settle in another country if free to do so. It asked about the political leanings of those who said they would leave: 41% of independents, 35% of Democrats and 22% of Republicans.

If wanting or vowing to leave is most often a political statement, it’s also a source of political fodder.

When Barbara Streisand said she would leave the country if Trump won, the conservative outlet BlazeTV declared that “For the second time in recent history, the trash is promising to take itself out.” In 2020, one Ohio sheriff mocked celebrities who said they’d leave four years ago but didn't by offering a one-way ticket out of the country . 

And some who want to leave get criticism for leaving the U.S. instead of fighting for change. 

After Scarborough moved to Spain, a man from another European country told her, “ ‘Well, you're just an opportunist. You’re taking advantage of other countries where people have done the work.” But she’d spent years advocating for causes back home, she said. 

“I'm choosing to spend my final years having fun in a place that has solved many of these problems and created a better quality of life,” she said. “At my age, I’ve done everything I can do. Do I need to keep fighting?”

Moving to Europe: Surprising, similar political issues 

Lauren Ell, 36, said people often underestimate the costs and challenges of moving. 

Ell, a Trump-supporting Republican Southern California native who moved to Sweden in 2016 to be with her partner, founded an online group called Nordic Republicans to connect conservatives, who she said are difficult to find in an area where Democrats tend to dominate expat forums.

“When I hear people say, ‘I'm gonna move out of the country, because of the politics there.’ I think it's a bit silly because it's really difficult if you just want to get up and move,” she said.

Some countries have strict residency policies for immigrants. Obtaining visas, work permits and citizenship often takes time and is costly. 

“And then there’s the politics,” Ell said, noting that Sweden, despite its liberal reputation, didn’t close businesses or mandate certain health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, in contrast to U.S. policies she opposed. “They might be surprised that there's actually similar right-leaning politics in many European countries.”

Indeed, support for right-leaning politicians has been rising in some European countries. In France, a far-right party made historic gains in the first round of hastily called legislative elections, raising the specter of the far-right coming into power for the first time since Nazi occupation in World War II. In the final round of voting, the far-right  National Rally party fell short of expectations, finishing behind centrist and leftist coalitions, but still secured its highest number of legislative seats yet. In early July, the Netherlands installed a new right-wing government, Reuters reported . 

Alessandra Bloom, 33, who moved from Boston where she worked in restaurant management to Rovigo, Italy, in 2021 to seek dual citizenship based on lineage, now works for Italian Citizenship Assistance – and understands why some Americans back home are looking abroad.

“It feels heavy in America. The divide is so strong,” she said. But living in Italy has also shown her that “there are problems everywhere in the world, and no matter where you go, everyone has political troubles.” She added, “I mean, they have just as much conservative politics and immigrant policy that they're debating.”

David Morse, 72,  who once worked as a staffer to Congressional Republicans, said he left the U.S. because of Trump. He moved in 2019 to Norway, where his wife was born. But he’s found it harder than he'd hoped to leave Trump’s political noise behind: “It’s hard to avoid Donald Trump.”

On TV,  he said, is a regular TV show chronicling Trump news. He’s everywhere on the internet. And Morse still reads U.S. political news often.

“And I guess that's partly my fault, too, because I suppose I could just not read stuff and turn it off, but I don’t,” he said. Trump, he said, “sort of buries himself into your brain.”

He still plans to vote from abroad, a desire that has helped grow the group Democrats Abroad, an official group with state-level recognition by the Democratic National Committee, whose membership has tripled since 2015, according to a spokeswoman who declined to provide an exact figure. 

But Morse is happy living abroad. In part, because he doesn’t see things changing anytime soon. While people moved to Canada to protest the Vietnam War, he said, “it wasn't systematic or fundamental to the American system.” This time, he said, it feels different.

He said he worries about a more violent or widespread version of Jan. 6 if Trump loses, and that democracy’s guardrails will fail to hold up. 

“There's nothing that says that American democracy is permanent and immutable,” he said. “And I fear it's coming apart.”

Politicians must engage with Asian American voters

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month ended in May. But the question for community leadership organizations like the Asian American Federation and our members and allies is: How do we keep our community in focus year-round?

While celebratory months come and go, preparations for election season are always upon us. Thanks to recent results, political pundits now realize what our community has known for years: Engaging Asian American voters is crucial for winning an election. But as candidates vie for our votes, some fail to recognize that the key to gaining them is year-round engagement.

At 1.5 million strong, Asian Americans are the fastest-growing voting bloc in New York City. On Long Island, the Asian population grew by 4.4% to 252,957 between 2022 and 2023, according to a Newsday analysis. Asian American voters represent more than 20 ethnic groups and speak more than 40 languages.

This diversity, driven by national origin, home-country ties, and linguistic identity, results in varying socioeconomic circumstances. For some, health care access is pressing, while others prioritize more funding for schools, immigration reform, or safety in light of ongoing anti-Asian violence and racist political rhetoric.

In community meetings, we often hear, “Why are we only sought out during election season? We are here year-round, and we want to be engaged on issues important to the entire community. We feel unseen and ignored.”

Elected leaders and candidates must think beyond transactional relationships during election season and engage in earnest with their Asian American constituents using linguistically and culturally sensitive approaches. Most importantly, our community tends to vote based on issues, not party affiliation. Candidates must recognize our unique complexities and avoid lumping us under a simplistic “Asian vote” label.

Failing to tailor outreach efforts to our needs excludes many in our community from crucial conversations that influence voters. AAF understands these challenges, as do our member agencies that lead civic engagement programs, especially in communities where only 50% of residents are proficient in English.

A new AAF report highlights the power of consistent and culturally sensitive outreach to Asian American voters: Rep. Tom Suozzi’s campaign successfully engaged Asian American voters, demonstrating how our communities were key to victory in February’s Third Congressional District special election. More than 17% of registered voters in the district are Asian American; 37.5% of them are unaffiliated with any party. Suozzi won the Queens area by more than 20 points, significantly outperforming the previous Democratic candidate’s 4-point margin in the same area.

Suozzi’s campaign connected with Asian American communities through local events in places where Asian New Yorkers gather. Furthermore, because nearly 63% of Asian Americans in his district are foreign-born and 34.8% have limited English proficiency, the campaign produced multilingual voter literature in Chinese, Korean, and Urdu to ensure broad outreach, a tactic we know is effective. Suozzi’s win illustrates the power of the Asian American vote.

It would be a critical mistake for any campaign to continue to disregard the voting power of Asian American New Yorkers and to not meet our communities where they are.

My community has been long ignored, but we are Americans who want to be engaged as a key to change. The Asian American community wields significant power as a voting bloc. Our votes will support candidates who connect with us in ways that respect our culture and heritage. We are here. We want to be engaged, and we are ready to vote.

Elektrostal , city, Moscow oblast (province), western Russia . It lies 36 miles (58 km) east of Moscow city. The name, meaning “electric steel,” derives from the high-quality-steel industry established there soon after the October Revolution in 1917. During World War II , parts of the heavy-machine-building industry were relocated there from Ukraine, and Elektrostal is now a centre for the production of metallurgical equipment. Pop.
