IELTS Essay on Education Writing Task 2: Sample 1

Some people say that children should be encouraged with a competitive feeling right from a tender age, and others say that children must be taught cooperation rather than competitiveness in primary school and high school. In your opinion, what should be the right approach?

Sample Answer 1 :

Young people are the hope and strength of every society who will one day run the nation with their intelligence and skills. Therefore, some people firmly believe that inculcating the feeling of competitiveness will pave the way for a better future. However, others are inclined towards imbibing in them the values of cooperation. Garnering the thoughts of C.S Lewis, “Education without values, as useful as it is, rather makes a man a more clever devil,” I too believe in the power of cooperation. Here I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both values.

Competitive values cannot be ignored in children, for they instil the zeal to excel in school as well as for their university degrees. It is the desire to surpass others that drives a child for the best academic performance. The competitive nature of school where students are awarded for their best among the rest of their performance accelerates their hard work in the right direction. Winning in any activity not just fosters a sense of decision making but also leads to fulfilment and self-achievement.

Moreover, competitive values infuse self-independence and self-confidence in pupils, which brings them laurels in academics, sports, cultural activities, and professionally. This stands true when children grow to become a vital part of a country’s growth. The qualities of governing, balancing work, and pushing the envelope harder to reach goals enable them to contribute to nation-building.

While competitive values provide children with the zest to become the best in their profession, it is needless to say that without the values of cooperation, their skills will not stand effective. Man is a social animal and the inherent need to stay connected with other people is what gives him a purpose in life. This is where cooperation offers children the art of teamwork, tolerance, patience and co-existence. Competitiveness without cooperation will eventually result in rivalry amongst peers that proves good for nobody.

In recent years,  this has been evident from sports, where teamwork is considered to be the most vital element. Even the President of a nation needs his/her cabinet ministry for support at every level. While a place where none gets along with each other is doomed for failure, no matter the skills and knowledge. To conclude, after gauging both competitive and cooperative values, I strongly feel that both values carry their advantages and must be taught in conjunction to garner the benefits for children.

Sample Answer 2 :

It is always a bonus when one activity has the capability to offer double benefits, and this viewpoint stands true for children’s leisure time that delivers educational benefits as well. This concept of amalgamating education with recreation is drawing the interest of not just parents but also academicians, who believe that the absence of learning while playing makes the whole experience pointless.

By the same token, I feel every child’s activity must have some educational value as a takeaway. This is further supported by the examples of the internet game Pokemon, which aims at imparting analytical and strategic learning.

Recreational activities are the gateway to the responsive and refreshed mind of children, and taking advantage of this to infuse learning can prove to be highly beneficial. It is the world outside of the classroom where most children let their creativity find wings through leisurely activities. For example, Sweden has legally imposed that all children’s toys must have an educational value.

Furthermore, they also have a rule which specifies that the toys must be approved by scientific research so that children can gain maximum benefits from the toys while they have fun.

On the contrary, games with no educational value simply waste the time of children where they gain no practical knowledge in any area. If, however, every game is intertwined with informational data, no matter how small, it will help in the cognitive development of children. There is no denying that the time spent uselessly on leisurely activities with no educational value is a waste of time and energy for children whose mind is highly impressionable and can be guided to fun learning experiences. To conclude, scientific evidence pertaining to fun games with educational value is a clear indication of why children’s leisure activities should have an element of analytical and strategic learning involved.

IELTS Free University Education Essay

The issue of free university education is an essay topic that comes up in the IELTS test. This essay therefore provides you with some of the key arguments about this topic.

The essay is an agree / disagree essay , which means you are given one opinion and then asked if you agree with it or not.

So remember to make it clear in your essay which side you are on.

University education should be free to everyone, regardless of income.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Choosing a Side

Aims of University Essay

Of course you don't have to firmly come down on one side - you could partly agree if there are some aspects of the arguments you agree with but some parts you disagree with.

In this essay, the writer believes free university education is the best policy, so s/he agrees with the opinion. This is made clear in the conclusion (though you can put your opinion in the introduction as well if you wish).

The writer presents both sides of the argument . This is a good idea as you may find it more difficult to come up with a lot of ideas for one side of an argument. It also shows you are able to see both sides of the argument - a good academic skill.

Free University Education Essay

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Over recent years, more and more people have been attending university and arguments have persisted as to whether students should pay for this privilege not. Although there are convincing arguments on both sides, I strongly believe that it should be free.

One argument put forward in favour of charging students is that education is becoming more expensive to fund as universities grow in size. Consequently, making students pay may maintain standards and ensure the quality of the teaching. In addition, it is argued that most students benefit from university in terms of higher paid jobs, so it is fair that they pay for at least some of the cost, especially given that the majority of students attending university are from the middle classes. Last but not least, in many countries, there is a shortage of people to do manual jobs such as plumbing and carpentry, so making university more expensive may encourage people to take up these jobs.

However, there are a number of arguments in favour of making university education free for all. Firstly, it will encourage more people to attend and this will benefit society. This is because it will lead to a more productive and educated workforce. Research has generally shown that those countries that have a better educated population via university have higher levels of innovation and productivity. In addition, there is the issue of equality of opportunity. If all students are required to pay, those on a low income may be dissuaded from attending, thus making it unfair. The reason for this is that they will likely not be able to secure financial support from their family so they will be concerned about the debts they will incur in the future.

In conclusion, I am of opinion that all education should remain equally available to all regardless of income. This is not only fair, but will also ensure that countries can prosper and develop into the future with a well-educated workforce.

Sample Answer

Considering the current global scenario, some people opine that  enlightening  the masses is the sole developing factor for a nation. However, even though education can be regarded as one of the essential aspects of a country’s progress, other factors, like economic stability and healthcare facilities, play a crucial role. Therefore, this view will be further elaborated in the upcoming paragraphs of this essay.

Literacy  is the most fundamental right of an individual, and it not only furthers the advancement of the person but the society and country as a whole. But, unfortunately, only being educated is not enough, as one needs capital to  procure  necessities. For example, many people in India are highly qualified, but due to the lack of jobs, they are moving to countries that grant professional opportunities. Consequently, employment and monetary growth are also vital for a country, without which it cannot upgrade its infrastructure.

Moreover, another  decisive  factor in a country’s evolution is its health sector. When the citizens of a country are not physically and mentally  robust , no education will facilitate the  burgeoning  of a country. The recent outburst of the coronavirus not only addressed the medical  paucity  at large but also  brought  many influential economies  to their knees . Consequently, it was an  eye-opener  for all to be prepared for unknown perils in the unforeseeable future.

Nevertheless, education is the prime factor for improvement. As practical and theoretical knowledge is the foundation of every occupation that helps a country’s welfare, it is definitely one of the  paramount  influences for prosperity.

To conclude, although education is a dominant element in the nation’s development, it is also accompanied by other factors, as mentioned above.

Meaning: providing or tending to provide knowledge, understanding, or insight

E.g.: The speech was enlightening for the public on the health benefits of yoga

2. literacy (noun)

3. procure (verb)

Meaning: to obtain something, especially after an effort

4. decisive (adjective)

Meaning: able to make decisions quickly and confidently, or showing this quality

E.g.: Her condition was one of the decisive factors in the jury’s verdict.

5. robust (adjective)

Meaning: strong and healthy

E.g.: Ramen was a robust child, but now he has become sickly.

6. burgeoning (verb)

Meaning: growing or developing quickly

E.g.: The burgeoning of the company was the result of employee-friendly policies.

7. paucity (noun)

Meaning: the condition of having very little or not enough of something

E.g.: The paucity of water and food led to many deaths in the village.

8. bring to one’s knees (phrasal verb)

Meaning: to force to submit or give in

E.g.: He was brought to his knees after the repeated blow of his opponent.

9. eye-opener (noun)

Meaning: situation revealing surprising new information

E.g.: The celebrity’s death was an eye-opener for all.

10. paramount (adjective)

Meaning: more important than anything else

hello dave, can u please reply me?

Can u please tell me the ideas of the following essay? ( From the agree side please)                                             For the married couples nowadays, some people say that it is the responsibilities for both spouses to earn a living for the family. To extent do u agree or disagree?

I think I’ve written about that or a similar topic – if I get a chance, I’ll write a sample answer for that specific one, Eric!

Eric

Thank u dave

Eric

Can u just give me the ideas of the essay? Just in short notes. Not the whole essay. Thank U.

Tom

Hello Mr. Dave. I find that your writing style is amazing but it is quite difficult to imitate, especially the body part of the essay. I see I could have learned from you how to write an introduction and conclusion, but it seems too difficult to learn how to write the body. but I must emphasize that I still learn a lot of good vocabulary and phrases from you. It would be great if you have a detailed tutorial on how to write the body so that it is easiest to follow. dear

IELTS Writing Task 1 Tips by IELTS Mentor

IELTS Writing Task 1 Tips by IELTS Mentor

The  Writing Task 1  of the  IELTS  Academic test requires you to  write  a summary of at least 150 words in response to a particular graph (bar, line or pie graph), table, chart, or process (how something works, how something is done).

In IELTS writing module, the most complicated part is writing the introduction. If you have a good technique for this, then the rest of the task is easy. • The first thing to note is that writing about Tables, Graphs and Diagrams is not the same as writing an essay in IELTS writing task 2. • We are NOT asked to give our opinion on the information, but generally to write a report describing the information factually. • It is NOT necessary to write an introduction like in an essay for this writing task. We are writing a report, which means that we do NOT begin with a broad general statement about the topic. • We do NOT need to write a conclusion which gives any kind of opinion about the significance of the information.

Three steps to keep in mind

1. Identify the main idea behind the graph or table. This will be the focus of your first sentence.

2. Consider the details of what is being shown – the units of measurement and the time frame – and decide how much you need to include.

3. Consider the language to use – the introductory expressions, the tenses of the verbs, the correct expressions of time or measurement

Three possible ways to start

1. Refer to the visual directly (e.g. This graph shows the population of Canada in from 1867 up to 2007.) However, this method is not advisable, since the instructions in the IELTS test will normally give you just this information. If you copy directly from the paper you are wasting time, since the examiner cannot assess your English from a copied sentence.

2. Refer directly to the main message conveyed by the visual (e.g. There was a sharp increase in the population of Canada from 1867 up to 2007.) This way is perfectly acceptable, and shows that you are able to recognise the main concept or message that the graph or table shows.

3. Combine the two (e.g. The graph shows that there was a sharp increase in the population of Canada from 1867 up to 2007.) This is also acceptable, and is often used as a convenient way to start. In order to use this method, it is necessary to use a few fixed expressions, which refer to the text itself, like those below.

SAMPLE SENTENCES

• There was a substantial increase in the value of stocks on March 15th. • House prices rose dramatically in July. • The number of tourists visiting New York fell sharply in October. • The percentage of students walking to school continued to rise gradually over the ten year period from 2000-2010. • There was a sharp increase in employee turnover after the strike. • Interest in environmental issues has risen steadily over the last 10 years.

MORE USEFUL WORDS AND PHRASES

1. Percent – the word percent comes after a number

Examples: More than 25% of the students are from Brazil. More than 25 percent of the students come from Brazil. 2. Percentage – The word percentage comes after words like the, a, this and that. Often, it is preceded by an adjective. Examples: A small percentage of residents have lived in the building for more than 20 years. The percentage of students who live on campus has fallen sharply since the fire.

3. For numbers up to ten, write the numbers in words. For numbers over 10, you can write the numbers in numbers. Examples: Five percent of the employees were late this month. More than 50 percent of the students handed in their assignments late after the long weekend.

4. If the sentence starts with a number, always write it in words. Examples: Wrong: 25 students were from China. Right: Twenty-five students were from China.

Approximations, Percentages and Fractions

In many of the IELTS writing task 1 questions, we will have to deal with percentages. This is a good opportunity to express these percentages in a different way and boost our score. A way of varying this language is to express them as fractions or proportions. Remember that we should vary our language as much as possible in order to score high in the ‘lexical resource’ part of the test. It is also fine to use approximations, for example, ‘49%’ can be expressed as ‘nearly a half’.

Using appropriate tenses in IELTS writing task 1 is essential for a high band score. The key is to look at the title of the chart and the information contained on both axes to establish what time frame is used. This will help us establish what tense we should use. Example: • If the time is one point in the past, for example January 1990, then we should use the past tense. • If it has projections for the future, for example 2045, we use future tenses. • It there is no time, we use present simple.

Summarising

IELTS writing task 1 is essentially a summarising task. The overview paragraph should contain two or three sentences summarising the main features of the graph. Here are some short phrases that can be used. • To summarise, the most marked change is…. • Overall it is clear…. • Overall the majority/minority…. • In sum, the most noticeable trend is…. Don’t use ‘to conclude’. This is only for discursive essays.

Band 6+: Financial education should be a mandatory component of the school program. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Children in this modern era have access to a variety of magnificent toys, food, and many other interesting items compared to the past. They are bound to crave all these items they see. In other words, children will spend money on anything they want or find interesting. Even some adults these days crave items they find amazing.

If financial education starts at the very beginning of the school years, it will help children understand the value of money. Children should also be taught how to manage their expenses and spend wisely. When a child learns this in the school program, they will be able to apply it when making purchases or after they leave school. They will not be easily cheated when they are young. This will benefit not only their families but also the entire country when they grow older.

However, some children are capable of handling their finances in a very positive way even before they learn it at school. These children would have learned from their families or the people around them. They manage money better compared to children from wealthier families, for whom spending is not a problem.

My conclusion is: children, regardless of their background, should be taught financial education from the very beginning in school, and this foundational knowledge should be reinforced by parents at home.

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.
