PhD in Artistic Research

Doctoral education at Oslo National Academy of the Arts is a three-year full-time study programme, 180 credits, which leads to a PhD in artistic research. The subject areas for the PhD at The Oslo National Academy of the Arts are art and craft, dance, design, fine art, opera and theatre. The education gives the candidate knowledge, expertise and competence in accordance with the Norwegian Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (NQF). The study programme is practice-based. The candidate has access to relevant and qualified supervision in dialogue with an active community of peers and colleagues operating according to international standards.

Artistic practice is at the core of the artistic PhD result. At the same time, the artistic practice is to be accompanied by an explicit reflection, which, when the project is presented, grants others access into the working methods and insights that emerge from the artistic research.

The study programme consists of training component courses (30 ECTS credits) and independent artistic research, that is, the artistic PhD project (150 credits). Courses and the artistic PhD project are required to operate according to advanced professional standards. The artistic PhD project is expected to be at a level of national and international relevance.

The doctoral study programme is the parallel within artistic disciplines to third cycle science-based research training and qualifies for artistic practice and artistic research at a national and international level. Additionally, the competence is relevant to other societal functions where in-depth competence with artistic research is required. In addition to its relevance within the arts, competence at this level will be sought after in public administration, universities and colleges and in the industry.

Frequently asked questions

From the announcement: «Artistic research at Oslo National Academy of the Arts is expected to be innovative, further the professional fields, and be based on artistic practice.»

There are two different types of PhD degrees in Norway

  • philosophiae doctor (PhD)
  • philosophiae doctor (PhD) in artistic research

Oslo National Academy of the Arts offer a PhD in artistic research.

The core in Oslo National Academy of the Arts PhD is explained in our regulation:

«Artistic practice is at the core of the artistic PhD result. At the same time, the artistic practice is to be accompanied by an explicit reflection, which, when the project is presented, grants others access into the working methods and insights that emerge from the artistic research.»

From announcement: «Applicants must normally have a master’s degree in performing or creative arts in the relevant art discipline, c.f. the descriptions in the second cycle of the Norwegian Qualifications Framework. Based on a special assessment, Oslo National Academy of the Arts may approve other, comparable qualifications as the basis for admission.»

The key is that the competence requirement is an executive / creative master's degree in the relevant subject area/ art field.

Documentation of competence requirement

The competency requirement is usually documented with a diploma, or with other documentation of master degree within the subject area.

If you cannot document this level of competence with a diploma, you may be able to document the same competence requirement (executive or creative master's degree) in another way.

  • Unfortunately, it is not possible for Oslo National Academy of the Arts to make an expert assessment, but what you can consider is whether you are likely to have the same level of expertise as people who have taken an executive or creative master's degree in the artistic field – and how you can document this level of competence
  • Documentation of competence will be measured against the learning outcome of the relevant master's study, eg. Design
  • You can find the learning outcomes described in the curricula for these study programs at khio.no
  • The documentation you enclose must cover all of the learning objectives; This means that this may require quite extensive documentation
  • The documentation is evaluated by experts who are appointed for each individual position as a doctoral fellow

From the announcement: «The PhD research fellowship is a three-year full-time position with terms and conditions in accordance with regulations for state employees» «Workplace on a daily basis is at Oslo National Academy of the Arts.»

Yes, the position is in Oslo.

Admission to the PhD programme at Oslo National Academy of the Arts requires appointment in position that includes three years of pure doctoral education.

Two people who both need to take the doctoral degree cannot share a position.

From regulation § 11-2. Collaborative work:

«It is the responsibility of Oslo National Academy of the Ars to decide whether an artistic doctoral result produced through collaboration between several contributing partners may be submitted for evaluation. In this case, it must be possible to identify the contributions of the individuals involved. If the artistic doctoral result or parts of the result have been produced in collaboration with other cooperating partners, the PhD candidate must follow the norms for co-authorship that are generally accepted within the academic and artistic community and in accordance with international standards. A doctoral result containing collaborative contributions from cooperating partners must include a signed declaration that describes the candidate’s contribution to each of the results. The candidate and all the contributors must sign the declaration.»

As of today, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, does not yet have experience with the situation that an artistic doctoral result produced by several others, is handed in for appraisal. Oslo National Academy of the Arts will have to make a concrete assessment, should this situation come up. As the fellow is admitted into a doctoral programme that will lead to a result being assessed, a minimum requirement will nevertheless be that the fellows individual contribution can be identified.

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design

design phd norway

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) offers a unique research-based education of international standing. Established in 1945, today it has built a solid national funding base and is prominently ranked internationally. AHO awards three Master’s degrees in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Design, as well as a PhD programme.

In its education, the school follows a studio-based model with a faculty-to-student ratio that encourages individual development and collaboration. The school has approximately 650 students.

AHO offers Master’s degree programmes that are designed to best equip the student to enter directly into professional practice or academia. Within the Master’s programmes, students may specialise in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism, industrial design, interaction design, service and systems-oriented design.

The school also offers post-professional Master’s courses in urban studies, system oriented design and architectural conservation. AHO offers a single type of doctoral degree, the Doctor of Philosophy.

The PhD programme is organized as a separate academic and administrative unit. The programme includes approximately 50 PhD candidates who, along with AHO’s established academic staff, do research on artistic and academic problems.

Three institutes— Institute of Architecture , Institute of Urbanism and Landscape , and Institute of Design —organsize the education at AHO. Each Institute has its own research centre that informs and inspires teaching and practice.

As an international school, AHO’s Master’s programmes are taught in English. International students constitute 25% of the Master’s students and 50% of the PhD candidates.

The school boasts of three unique workshops for wood, plastic and metal, alongside a full-scale construction hall, Rapid manufacturing labs, libraries, and the most current IT resources. Studios, data labs, and unstaffed workshops are open to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The international faculty consists of academics and practicing professionals who provide the necessary breadth needed for a contemporary architecture and design education.

AHO is located in the centre of Oslo, at Vulkan, a revitalised industrial area near the Aker River. An innovative, creative and cultural part of the city. The school lays adjacent to the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and the recently opened Food Hall.

AHO was established in 1945 initially as a “crisis course” for architects who had seen their education interrupted by World War II. Prior to this, most Norwegian architects were educated at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) in Trondheim, a polytechnic school. Throughout the interwar period, many architects had called for a more artistically oriented architectural education, and for an institution based in Oslo, where the most qualified teaching personnel were located. The architecture programme was initially run as part of The Norwegian Arts and Crafts School (SHKS), but in 1962 AHO was established as an independent institution.

The first industrial design programme in Norway, the Institute of Industrial Design, was established at SHKS in 1983. In 1996, the Institute merged with The Oslo School of Architecture. Master of Landscape Architecture became part of AHO’s master’s programmes in 2004. In 2005, The Oslo School of Architecture changed name to The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. In 2009, the Institute of Industrial Design changed its name to the Institute of Design.

What defines quality of life in a city? Is it the availability of good restaurants, bars and entertainment options? Or is it easy access to unspoilt nature? In Oslo, you don’t have to choose between the two—we have plenty of both.

The sun doesn't set until close to midnight, and even then it never really gets dark. You can spend the evening watching the light change at an outdoor café with friends, or go for a relaxing swim in the fjord alone. Oslo in the summer is a pretty magical place.

Student life.

The traditional Viking spirit is still strong in modern day Norwegians. Despite the hardiness needed to endure cold winters and mountainous terrain, Norwegians have a spirit of kos (cosiness) that can be seen in their love of gå på tur (hiking), staying in hytte (chalet-like holiday cabins), their liberal society and an inner warmth and humour.

Norway is also a country with unique natural wonders. You can experience the serene Fjords, the awe-inspiring Northern Lights and the impressive mountains of the Jotunheimen National Park.

Culture and tourism

Arts and culture are flourishing in Norway, carrying on the legacy of famous literary, artistic and musical figures including Edvard Grieg, Henrik Ibsen, Edvard Munch, and Ludvig Holberg. Norway’s ‘Atlantic art nouveau’ style can be seen in its architecture, museums, theatres. Perhaps Norway’s most popular export is its music, ranging from the electronic duo Röyksopp to the folk-pop Kings of Convenience and the heavy metal bands Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir.

Sport and leisure

Winter sports are big in Norway – a traditional proverb declares ‘Norwegians are born with skis on their feet’. Norway also enjoys its extreme sports such as rock climbing, rafting, parachuting, BASE jumping, kiteboarding and mountain biking. For more leisurely visitors, hiking and cycling around Norway’s natural wonders are also a popular pastime.

Food and drink

Norway has a unique and traditional cuisine - though not all of it is for the faint-hearted! Lots of dishes are based around fish, including tørrfisk (a dry-preserved fish), sursild (pickled herring with sauces), fiskesuppe (fish soup), and lutefisk (fish soaked in acidic water-lye). There’s also syltelabb (cured pig’s trotter) and kjøttkaker and kjøttboller (meat-cakes and meatballs). The truly adventurous may want to try smalahove (blowtorched and boiled sheep’s head). Norwegians also love their coffee, and you’ll find many cafés. Although most alcohol is expensive, juleøl (Christmas beer) and akevitt (spirit flavoured with caraway seeds) are traditional delicacies.

Accommodation

The cost of housing in Norway can be high so, as a PhD student, you will usually be staying in university accommodation.

Accommodation types

Most Norwegian universities offer student accommodation in the form of student villages located within or nearby to the university campus. These are similar to halls of residence or student flats in the UK. Student villages are significantly cheaper than alternative accommodation, such as private rented rooms / apartments.

Accommodation costs

The cost of accommodation is generally higher than in the UK. You can expect to pay around €350-495 per month for a room in university accommodation. Your prospective university can provide you with further information about the accommodation options that they offer.

Living costs

The cost of living in Norway is quite high. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) requires that students have a minimum of €12,931 per year to cover subsistence during PhD study. You can expect to pay around €946 per month excluding rent.

Prices in Norway

The following table gives an indication of prices for some common expenses during a PhD in Norway:

Student Cost of Living in Norway - 2024
€17.13
€12.84
€67.65
€191.85
.

Working during your PhD

Due to the high cost of living in Norway, many international students choose to hold part-time jobs to fund their studies. However, finding part-time work with Norwegian language ability can be difficult and available jobs are limited.

EU / EEA students do not need a work permit and are free to work in Norway once they have registered their residence with the local police.

Other international students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the first year of study as specified by your student residence permit . However, when the study permit is renewed year-on-year, satisfactory progress in your PhD must be documented to continue working part-time.

Employment contracts with your university

Many PhD students in Norway are treated as university employees. As such, you may receive a salary and workers’ rights. However, this also means if you are a non-EU / EEA student you may require specific conditions or a valid work permit to reflect your status, and this may also affect your ability to carry out additional work. You should contact your university for more information.

The Norwegian currency is the Krone (kr or NOK).

In order to open a Norwegian bank account, PhD students will first need to receive their Norwegian Identity Number . The application to open your bank account must be done in person at your chosen bank and requires your National ID card and passport. It may take several weeks to process your application.

The transport networks of Norway are typically modern and expansive. Additionally, your Norwegian university student card provides many discounts on transport services.

Rail travel

The railway is often the best way to get around Norway, particularly in the remoter Northern parts of the country. Most passenger services are operated by Norwegian State Railways (NSB). Student tickets, with a 25% discount, are available for students with valid ID cards and confirmation of university enrolment.

Norway has over 50 airports, connecting the country’s major cities to more isolated locations and other parts of Europe. The state-run company Avinor is responsible for administering most of Norway’s airports.

Inner-city travel

Most Norwegian cities have a local bus service offering affordable travel. However, the most popular way of travelling around Norway’s cities is by walking or biking – the country’s traffic culture priorities pedestrians and cyclists. Taxis are also available, but these tend to be fairly expensive.
