How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

4-minute read

  • 7th January 2023

Describing a person or character is difficult for even the most successful authors. It requires a balance of words to make sure they shine through without the language being too heavy. In this article, we’ll look at how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person, share some examples, and talk about different strategies.

1.   Brainstorm Your Ideas

Brainstorming is crucial to any writing process. It’s the process in which you think of ideas for what you’d like to write about. In this case, you’re writing a descriptive paragraph about a person. It’s important to use adjectives to describe the features or characteristics you want to focus on.

One way to come up with ideas for a descriptive paragraph about a person is to go through the five senses. Use the questions below to get some ideas for what you want to highlight about your person.

Appeal to your reader’s senses – smell, taste, sound, sight, and touch

Smell: How does the person smell? Do they wear perfume? Are they doing an activity that would make them have a certain smell?

Taste: Do you associate a certain food with this person? Does it make you think of a specific taste? Can you taste something due to a certain smell they have?

Sound: Do they have a unique voice or laugh? Are they doing an activity that has distinctive sounds?

Sight: What prominent features do they have? For example, think about their dressing style, their smile, or their surroundings. What do you see them doing in your mind when you see a photo of them? What memories do you have of this person? Does this person remind you of something or someone?

Touch: What textures do you see? For example, imagine their skin or clothing. How does it feel if you hug them?

2.   Begin With a Short and Snappy Sentence

Like with any type of writing, you want to hook your reader so that they want to continue reading. In this case, you can use a topic sentence, if appropriate, to introduce your reader to the person. For example:

Or, if you want to be more creative, you can reel them in with a short and snappy sentence about this person. This is called a writing hook . This sentence should focus on a stand-out detail or characteristic about the person you’re describing. For example:

3.   Describe the Person

Now, this is the hard part. But, if you’ve brainstormed plenty of ideas and know which ones you want to focus on, it will be easier. Let’s look at some examples to get a better idea of how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person using the prompt “describe a person you admire.”

Comments: This paragraph is pretty typical of most students. It gives lots of visual details of the person and uses a simile or two (“ Her eyes are like the color of honey” and “Her smile shines like the sun” ). While this strategy gets the job done, it’s not very exciting to read. In fact, it can be quite boring!

Let’s look at how we can rewrite this to make it more exciting.

Comments: In this example, we focused on one defining characteristic of the person we are describing — her laugh. This strategy places more focus on the person you’re describing, rather than the adjectives you use to describe them.

4.   Edit and Revise

After you write your descriptive paragraph, be sure to read it over. Read it out loud. Read it in a funny voice. Doing this will help you to hear the words and identify which parts do not work or sound awkward.

5.   General Tips for Descriptive Writing

●  Avoid using too many descriptive words.

●  Remember to show the reader, not tell.

●  Appeal to the reader’s five senses – smell, touch, taste, sight, and sound.

●  Focus on a striking or defining characteristic.

●  Use contrasting details from other people or surroundings for emphasis.

●  Use literary devices (metaphors, similes etc.) sparingly and with intention.

●  Use a hook to reel your reader in.

●  Use a variety of short and long sentences.

●  Practice creative writing exercises to improve your descriptive writing skills.

●  Always edit and revise your writing.

When couples make it through the seven-year itch or the average time relationships last, everything down the road is said to be more manageable. However, some couples break up even after decades of being together. Explore the primary causes behind the failure of long-term relationships and consider the first signs that couples are growing distant from each other.

Look into today’s social sentiments and determine whether long-term relationships are declining. If they are, contemplate whether this should be a cause for concern or merely an acceptable change in culture. Positive Words That Describe My Wife

A lot of times, in marriage, it is easy fo get distracted by so many things and forget to appreciate . This was actually an idea I stole from her but I just thought “why not”? If anyone is deserving of appreciation, it is she. But since my vocabulary is limited, i thought about getting a list of that describes her.

aspacio at tamagoya

This list of positive words to describe my wife were taken from my friend Google which has hundreds of words. What I did was I eliminated the words which do not deescribe her. I also learned some new words that fits her character, personality and attitude.

To my wife: “I apologize for the times I have not expressed appreciation and gratitude, not only for the good traits in you but also for all the good things you do for me daily. I choose, by God’s grace, to focus on these rather than to look at faults. I will make this list grow all through our married life and will never stop discovering the good things in you. I love you, Jennie!”

Although, not totally exhaustive, I do plan to keep is list growing and grow in knowledge about adjectives and their meanings. I will update this list from time to time as I discover more about her.

This list contains traits and characteristics that I see in my wife. To me she is:

affable affectionate agreeable amiable approachable attractive attentive authentic bright careful caring charitable charming classy consensical compassionate congenial conscientious courteous cuddly dear determined devoted diligent emotional faithful frank friendly generous gentle good gregarious hard-working helpful honest intellectual intelligent intuitive kind loving loyal modest neat nice passionate patient persistent polite powerful practical pro-active quick-witted reliable resourceful romantic self-disciplined sensible sensitive sincere sociable straightforward sweet sympathetic thoughtful tidy tough warmhearted willing witty

Ever wondered what makes a marriage great? Although every relationship is a little different, the same common traits are found in the strongest marriages. Trust, communication, and respect probably come to mind, but you might be surprised to learn that playfulness and friendship rank high, too. Read through these characteristics to see how your marriage compares.

You spend quality time around one another.

Strong couples make time for their relationship.

  • Work on a mutual project you've wanted to accomplish.
  • Take a language class together.
  • Go for a walk or jog after dinner.
  • Have a picnic the next time the weather's nice.
  • Watch a local comedian and laugh together.
  • Go on a day trip and explore a nearby town.

You keep the lines of communication open.

A good marriage means it's easy to share thoughts and feelings.

  • When you two talk, you also give each other your undivided attention. For instance, your spouse will put down their phone or get off their laptop when you want to tell them something.

You’re kind and respectful to each other.

A strong marriage is based on mutual love, so you show it.

  • Acts of kindness don't have to be huge! You could leave a sweet note, pack a lunch for your spouse, compliment them in front of others, or call them during the day to see how they're doing.

You’re both committed to the relationship.

You and your spouse support each other through thick and thin.

  • In healthy marriages, neither partner will threaten the other with divorce or withhold affection.

You think the best of your spouse.

Secure partners give each other the benefit of the doubt when they make mistakes.

  • For example, if your spouse is running late, don't think, "He can never be on time. He's never considerate enough to check in with me," tell yourself, "Traffic must be bad today. I know he said he'd try to make it home on time."

You have fun with each other.

Couples in a good marriage are playful and lighthearted.

  • For instance, you could play innocent pranks on your spouse, surprise them with a weekend getaway, or take them to a show they've wanted to see.

You show each other physical affection.

Physical connection makes you feel more trusting and secure.

  • Keep in mind that some people have a stronger need for physical touch while others are more reserved. Try to find a good balance of what you and your partner need in your marriage.

You both work on emotional and sexual intimacy.

Strong marriages have a deep connection, so spouses can support each other.

  • Being emotionally close means that you're vulnerable, but you trust your partner to respect and listen to you.

You successfully resolve conflicts.

Strong couples don't avoid fighting, but they use it as an opportunity to talk.

  • For example, instead of saying, "You never help around the house. You just don't appreciate what I do!" you could say, "Can we talk about household chores later? I'm feeling really stressed out."

You forgive your spouse.

You realize that your partner is human and will make mistakes.

  • If you can't forgive your spouse and choose to hold a grudge, you'll have a hard time emotionally connecting with them in the future.
  • Not sure how to forgive them? You might say, "I'm really hurt by what you did, but I love you and I want to get through this together."

You appreciate your partner.

You or your spouse frequently say that you're thankful for each other.

  • For instance, you could say, "Hey, thank you for making dinner tonight. It was wonderful," or, "Thanks for picking up the kids today. It really made my day easier."

How to Write a Descriptive Essay

  • 4-minute read
  • 26th February 2020

A descriptive essay, as the name may suggest, is an essay in which you describe something. The idea is to create a vivid picture of something – a person, object, place or experience – for your reader.

But how do you write a descriptive essay? We have a few helpful tips to share.

1. Brainstorming and Organising Your Ideas

Your first step should be to brainstorm ideas . Think about the qualities of what you’re describing. As well as physical qualities, make notes about any thoughts, memories, and emotions you associate with your subject matter.

This brainstorming will give you the raw material for your descriptive essay. The next step is to create an essay outline. Typically, this will include:

  • An Introduction – An outline of what you will describe and the ‘thesis’ for your essay (i.e. a key theme that will run through your essay and guide your description). For instance, if writing about an inspirational teacher, you could mention the importance of education in the introduction.
  • Main Body – A series of paragraphs in which you describe your subject. Each paragraph should cover a single main point, then lead neatly on to the next one, adding to the overall picture you’re creating for the reader.
  • Conclusion – A final paragraph where you summarise your overall essay. This is also a good place to reaffirm your essay thesis, emphasising how your description reflects this.

Before you start writing, then, make some notes about what each paragraph in your essay will include. This will then guide the drafting process, making sure your essay has a clear structure.

2. Use Vivid, Sensory Language

A descriptive essay should paint a picture for your reader. And this means you need to use vivid, exciting language rather than a formal, academic tone. Ideas for making your essay more linguistically engaging include:

  • Using sensory language to evoke how something looked, smelled, etc.
  • Writing in the present tense to make the situation feel immediate.
  • Describing feelings and thoughts elicited by the subject of your essay.
  • Looking for dynamic adjectives and adverbs to use (e.g. you could say something made you ‘happy’, but ‘elated’ or ‘delighted’ may be stronger).
  • Using metaphors, similes, and other literary techniques .

Keep your introduction in mind while writing. The language you use should serve the ‘thesis’ you set out there, drawing the reader’s attention to specific aspects of the thing you’re describing.

3. Show, Don’t Tell

‘Show, don’t tell’ refers to a technique used by authors to make their writing more engaging. Essentially, all this means is using action, description, and dialogue to paint a picture for the reader rather than simply stating something in plain language. We can see the difference below:

Telling: Miss Hardy was an engaging speaker.

Showing: When Miss Hardy spoke, everyone listened. Her voice bubbled with enthusiasm, bringing even the most mundane subjects to life.

In the first sentence, we simply tell the reader that Miss Hardy was an engaging speaker. But in the second, we try to help the reader picture being in her class, listening to her speak. And by engaging the reader’s imagination like this, we can make our description more memorable.

4. Editing and Proofreading Your Descriptive Essay

Once you have a first draft, you’ll be ready to start editing. The idea here is to go back over your essay – at least once, but possibly multiple times – to look for ways you could improve it. This drafting process may involve:

  • Making sure your writing is clear, well structured, and impactful.
  • Rewriting passages that feel clichéd or that could be stronger.
  • Reading your essay out loud to see how well it flows.
  • Ensuring that the central theme of your essay is present throughout.

And when you’ve finished redrafting, go through the essay one more time to remove any typos that remain. Alternatively, you can submit your descriptive essay for proofreading . With the expert eye of a professional editor on your side, you can be confident your writing is the best it can be.

What is a Descriptive Essay?

A descriptive essay is a detailed paper that describes a place, person, situation, object, or emotion. Different people have different points of view and your job is to explain yours in detail.

You may be asked to write a descriptive essay about the beach or forest or about a person or situation. The purpose of this essay is to test the writer’s ability in expressing and explaining their experiences.

Descriptive writing should create a picture in the reader’s mind. You may be required to write a descriptive essay as a high school or college essay assignment.

For a compelling essay, using adjectives and adverbs, details, and figurative language is fundamental. Without proper usage of words, you will not be able to invoke the readers' emotions.

What is the Purpose of a Descriptive Essay?

The purpose of a descriptive essay is to describe a person, place, or personal experience in vivid detail so that the reader can create a picture in his mind.

The descriptive essay is written to get the reader to understand by using descriptive language. It is different from narrative essays, where the writer tells the story about someone else. Usually, it starts with a real-life event and then the content follows the author's imagination.

Descriptive essays are not intended to persuade the reader or show facts and figures to prove something. Descriptive essays are like word paintings that contain personal and descriptive details and these are mostly assigned to students of creative writing.

How to Start a Descriptive Essay

A strong start for your descriptive essay is essential. Analyze your topic from every angle and document the following details:

Analyze the main subjects in detail and observe minute things.

  • Start with observing all the possible aspects of the subject.
  • Don't just observe the object but also its surroundings.
  • Focus on details and features of the subject and develop opinions about them.
  • Be thoughtful; this first step will be the basis for the essay.

Physical Settings

Describing the physical settings is a must in a descriptive essay. When describing, keep the following points in mind.

  • Focus on the subject's position and observe nearby objects
  • Note the time of day and kind of lighting: natural or imitated
  • Physical settings: all the basic and decorative elements
  • The position and shape of the objects
  • Alignment and any other observable information

Physical Features

When describing the physical features of the subject, living or nonliving, consider the following points.

  • Living or nonliving; describe the features in detail
  • The subject's skin color, texture, smoothness, expression, and age
  • The features of inanimate objects in the picture, color, surface, and texture

Create Drama

Storytelling and drama are the life and blood of a good descriptive essay. It turns your essay into an exciting and interesting piece of writing. However, be subtle about adding drama to your sentence structure and add it to complement your story only.

Focus On Your Feelings

Focus on how you feel about the particular topic or person and stick to it. It is easy to get involved when working on the essay. But, focus on your own feelings and write an essay based on them.

Use Of Specific Vocabulary

Vocabulary is important. Select the best words for describing an action or object. Don't always use the first word that comes to mind.

Write slowly and thoughtfully, and use specific words to convey your thoughts.

Psychological Aspects

Writing about a certain situation or behavior of a person focuses on the mental aspects and emotions involved in them.

For Example, describe your emotions when your friend misplaced your notes right before the exam.

You may have had several emotions in that incident. Maybe you were prepared for exams, but this situation put you under pressure and made you feel frustrated and hurt.

Explore those emotions and describe the feelings they aroused. Describe the body language also, if relevant.

Ask Yourself, WHY?

This is the most valuable tip for students. When you are looking at a particular subject, and having difficulty analyzing its aspects, ask yourself "WHY".

  • Why is the subject the way it is?
  • Why does the person you are describing have such a deep-set and cold eyes?
  • Why is the animal so wounded and terrified?
  • Why is this particular place famous?

It is a good practice and after some time you will do it naturally. Knowing the why is important if you want to describe your topic properly.

How To Write A Descriptive Essay?

When you write a descriptive essay, you help your readers visualize an event, a person, or a story. It is written to make your readers feel what you feel about the respective subject.

A descriptive essay seeks to appeal to some or all of the audience’s five senses. Some key things to consider are:

  • Discussing your subject thoroughly
  • Focusing on details and adding them in your essay
  • Sharing your personal feelings and experience about the subject
  • Observing and describing all sensory details of your subject

Here are the steps to write a descriptive essay easily.

1- Choose an Engaging and Focused Essay Topic

An important step that all strong descriptive essays share is having a focused topic. Before you make the outline, identify the purpose of your essay and use it to create an appropriate thesis statement. This type of paper does not require much personal opinion from you. Its main goal should be focusing on information that will make a dominant impression in readers' minds instead.

2- Research and Gather Important Details

When writing a descriptive essay, it is important to make sure you include as many details and sensory information as possible. This helps your reader fully understand the images that are being presented in their mind's eye.You can organize these ideas into categories so they're easy for you to access when needed.

3- Create an Outline of Your Essay

Your essays must be organized by having subheadings that are clear and concise. Group your main points into individual body paragraphs, each of which should only cover one idea or topic at a time.

4- Write your Essay’s Introduction

A good introductory paragraph is much like a road map because it provides direction to your readers.

It provides relevant background information before diving into more specific details related to how something works or why something happens. These could include statistics or stories from real-life scenarios.

5- Write the Main Body Section of Your Essay

Each body paragraph should start with a topic sentence that keeps the reader hooked on what you are saying. Use specific details instead of making generalized statements, and make sure to give examples if necessary.

6- End with a Strong Conclusion

The conclusion of an essay is the final paragraph, and it should summarize all that you have said throughout. It's a good idea to restate the main points and key details from the essay in this section.

It is important so the reader has everything they need for better understanding before ending off on something new.

If necessary be sure not to introduce anything odd or unusual, to avoid any confusion.

7- Proofread and Revise the Essay Carefully

Once you are done writing the essay, proofread and revise it carefully. Make sure that it is free from all kinds of errors.

Descriptive Essay Outline

Like all the other essays, a descriptive essay also follows the usual 5-paragraph essay structure and format. Before starting, it is important to create an outline. Following are the fundamental elements of your descriptive essay outline:

Descriptive Essay Introduction

The introduction sets the footing for the entire essay. Before heading towards the body section, the reader will come across the introduction.

It is the first impression of your work. It is very important to write an engaging introduction so that the readers read the essay till the end.

Start the essay in an easy-to-understand way and language. Provide background information on your topic so they can understand it and its importance.

To make sure the reader feels your emotions and decides to continue reading further, incorporate the following points in your introduction.

The following tips will guide you on how to write a good introduction for a descriptive essay.

  • Attract the reader's attention with an interesting fact, phrase, or quote
  • Don't bombard them with information
  • Go straight to the main pointsInclude enough information to introduce the topic and its significance.
  • Summarize the argument and the main topic and craft your thesis statement

Descriptive Essay Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is an integral part of your essay. It focuses on the argument and the writer’s main idea, which is to be discussed in the essay.

This statement also provides the writer with a chance of explaining the purpose and scope of the topic. It is intriguing and engaging.

A thesis statement is written at the end of the introduction, it is mainly a single sentence that describes the essay objective. The thesis statement should act as a guide to the reader on what to expect in the essay body. It is like a table of contents of a book, to the reader on contents you will get an idea of what the book is all about so you get to understand it better.

It is like a table of contents of a book. By reading it, you will get an idea of what the book is all about.

A good thesis should contain the following things:

  • Define the essay scope - it should narrow down all the points to clarify its purpose.
  • Avoid using common words - you should be creative with your choice of words.
  • Create suspense - it should attract the reader to the body paragraphs of the essay.

For further information on how to write a thesis for a descriptive essay, check out the following examples.

  • Descriptive essay example about a Place

“Even though monarchy is long gone, Buckingham Palace is here to remind us of the aesthetic beauty of that era.”

  • Descriptive essay example about a Person

“One of the characteristics of Spider-Man is his youthfulness, and the fact that he talks to himself more than Hamlet.”

  • Descriptive essay example about an Emotion

“For numerous reasons, the dark forest is my greatest fear, though not a fear which is necessarily smart to face.”

Descriptive Essay Body Paragraphs

Body paragraphs of the essay come next after the introduction and thesis statement. It is the main part that continues your essay.

Usually, an essay consists of three body paragraphs but you can add more if needed.

Don't add more than one central idea in one paragraph. Fusing different ideas will confuse the reader.

Build your paragraphs according to the thesis and introduction.

  • Start each body paragraph with the main sentence
  • Use transitions to move between paragraphs smoothly
  • Each paragraph should be five to six sentences long

Descriptive Essay Conclusion

The concluding paragraph is the last part of an essay, and probably your last chance to impress your reader.

The last part that the reader can keep in mind is the conclusion, which is as important as the rest of the essay.

To make it interesting and thought-provoking, include the following points:

  • Restate the thesis statement
  • Summarize the main points
  • Add an intriguing closing statement

After writing the conclusion, make a review of your essay, identify the mistakes and maintain a good tone throughout the essay.

Curley’s Wife: sample GCSE English Literature essay

describe your wife essay

So, following on from the last blog post about Curley’s Wife, showing you how I would prepare my answer, what can I actually write in 45 minutes? I wrote this out longhand, just to see how much I could write in the time. Of course, I have been writing essays for many years, so I should be able to write more than the average GCSE student. Also, I’ve taught this text for about five hundred times. However, I’ll share what I got. I’m pretty pleased I managed my ‘side every 10 minutes’ as I did at A level – and narrow lines too. My hand hurts though, it must be said.

Press play and get a little “Curley’s Wife inspiration” as you read!

So, before I share, my thoughts.

  • Time yourself, time yourself, time yourself. I had the clock constantly running by me. I looked up every couple of paragraphs or so.
  • Make sure you move on when you need to. I could have written for hours about the extract and missed out altogether on part b of the answer.
  • Make sure you focus on the big ideas. You simply don’t have time in an essay to write about all the nuances.

In this passage, what methods does Steinbeck use to present Curley’s Wife and the attitudes of others towards her?

How does Steinbeck present attitudes to women in the society in which the novel is set?

Curley’s Wife is the only major female in Steinbeck’s novel, and as such, she represents all women in this short parable about how futile dreams are. Is she solely responsible for the end of George and Lennie’s dream, or is she just a misunderstood character? She is perhaps one of the more complex characters – neither ‘all bad’ like Curley, or ‘all good’ like Slim.

In this passage, Steinbeck uses two main techniques to present Curley’s Wife: the symbolism of colour and his description of her. The symbolism of the colour red cannot escape us: she has ‘rouged’ lips and ‘red’ fingernails; her mules are red and they are covered with ‘red’ ostrich feathers. First, it brings to mind a ‘scarlet’ woman – a dangerous woman who uses her sexuality to manipulate men – a promiscuous creature who is deeply cunning and manipulative. Red may be the colour of passion and love, but it is also a warning. She’s presented to us as a loose and dangerous woman, and it’s no surprise that so many of the men think that she gives them all ‘the eye’. Of course, we cannot overlook the connotations of sex, danger and warning. On the other hand, though, we are told she is a ‘girl’ and with her ‘sausage curls’, she seems like a child who likes bright colours, a girl desperate for attention, a girl desperate for everybody to look at her. It’s deeply ironic that she is dressed in clothes that scream ‘look at me’, and most men, like George, ‘look away’. She is invisible, despite all her attempts to get attention.

We get a very strong sense that Steinbeck is showing her to be an overly sexual ‘whore of Babylon’ or an Eve-like seductress sent to bring men to ruin.

When she puts her ‘hands behind her back… so that her body was thrown forward’ and we see that there’s something very deliberate in how she chooses her posture to maximise her assets. Like the ‘Whore of Babylon’, who leads men into hell, she’s dressed in red. She’s a temptress. She’s Eve personified, leading men into sin.

There’s also a strong element of foreshadowing that Steinbeck uses, to give her overtones of threat and warning. The red dress is an omen. All of this red is a reminder of the blood that will be spilt: hers and Lennie’s. It’s foreshadowing on another level, too, as George later tells Slim that Lennie had a run-in with a girl in a red dress in Weed.

She gets three reactions here, which exemplify how men react to her throughout the novel. George avoids her, looking away, calling her ‘jail bait’ and a ‘rat trap’. Here, he speaks ‘brusquely’ to her. He wants to end the conversation. Later, he calls her a ‘tramp’. He realises the trouble she could cause – albeit without any explicit desire to. Lennie exemplifies another reaction. He is ‘fascinated’ by her and when ‘his eyes moved down over her body and she bridled a little’, it shows she’s conscious of Lennie’s attention. He does as I suppose many people would. He gives her a good look over. She’s like some strange, exotic bird on the farm. Still, we can see what a dangerous situation this is. Finally, there’s Slim’s reaction. He calls her ‘goodlookin’ and speaks to her with neither George’s abrasive hostility nor Lennie’s dumb fascination. Ironically, it causes him issues with Curley, but he gives Curley’s Wife what she needs – attention, recognition and compliments.

Unfortunately for Curley’s Wife, she is a woman trapped in a misogynistic world of men whose reactions generally emulate George’s. They are openly hostile, sexist and mistrusting. Right from the first time she is mentioned, Candy says he’s seen her give Slim ‘the eye’ and give Carlson ‘the eye’ (this despite the fact that Steinbeck describes Carlson as a ‘big-bellied man’!) Candy calls her ‘a tart’. Her appearance unfortunately reinforces this view. In her red and makeup and feathered shoes, she has no place on a farm. She has no role. She is a trophy wife and yet she has no value here. From being a daughter at the mercy of her mother’s rules, she goes to become ‘Curley’s Wife’ – a nameless piece of property. She is so low on the scale that, like Crooks, she does not even have a name of her own. Today, we live in a world where women can wear whatever they like. Curley’s Wife does not have that permission. Because of the way she looks, Candy at the very least, blames her for what happens to her. It’s her own fault she got murdered, according to him. It seems like some kind of religious totalitarian state.

As you might expect in a fundamentalist religious country (despite the fact it is America, ‘the land of the free’) Curley’s Wife even gets the blame for her own murder, even though Steinbeck has been very careful to show that this is the inevitable outcome of Lennie’s spiralling ‘petting’ problem, from the mouse to the puppy to a woman. From the girl in Weed to Curley’s hand, Lennie is bound to hurt someone eventually. Even George says he ‘should of knew’ that Lennie would do something like this, absolving Curley’s Wife of any blame for her own death. Even so, Candy blames her, saying ‘you goddamn tramp… you done it, di’n’t you?’ as if it’s her own fault she’s dead and she only got herself murdered out of spite so Candy’s dream could not come true. It’s as if she did it on purpose. He says, ‘I spose you’re glad’ and we’re reminded that Candy sees her as entirely responsible for the destruction of his dream. She is Eve, ruining his paradise.

It’s sad because in a way she is accorded less respect than the only other women really mentioned in the novel – the girls in the local whorehouse. Even if the men only seek out the women there because they are lonely, there’s a kind of respect for the ‘working girl’ who does not offer anything more complicated than sex for cash. Curley’s Wife seems to command less respect than the prostitutes, and even Curley chooses to spend his night off at a brothel than with his wife.

It’s hard to determine Steinbeck’s own view of Curley’s Wife. Does he too believe that she is nothing more than ‘jailbait’? set to lead men into sin like some kind of modern day Eve? He presents her as unbelieveably cruel to Crooks, but within the context that everybody is cruel to Crooks, including the boss. She is presented as a petty, small-minded, deluded woman who believes she ‘could of been in movies’; she does not care who she hurts and would never even deign to stoop to become one of the ‘dum-dums’ she despises. Yet he also presents her as sad and vulnerable, mistreated by men. In this way, she is one of the most complex and most human characters in the novel, but it is clear there is no place for her here. I think she is both accidental temptress and misunderstood, but it is clear that beyond the brothel, attitudes to women were both prehistoric and misogynistic.

Some post-essay thoughts.

  • Write an introduction that attempts to set out the main points. If you get stuck, leave space and write it afterwards. Don’t just regurgitate her story, because it will give the examiner nothing to mark. All it shows is that your pen works! Get right into it with a summary.
  • Bring in background knowledge that relates to the book.
  • Be mindful that you cannot write everything in 45 minutes and you MUST prioritise. That’s really tough!

Essay on My Family

A family is God’s greatest gift to all living beings on earth including human beings. A person without family and its love is never complete and happy. A family is one with whom you can share all your joys and sorrows. Family stands by you at the toughest situations in life. Family gives you the warmth and affection that you may not get anywhere else. I too am blessed with such a family. My family has always been my strength. My mother, father, sister and I complete my family.

My Mother

My mother is the strongest woman I have ever seen in my life. She is a super woman. She can manage everything at the same time so beautifully and confidently. She is a fine individual with poise and dignity. She is the pivot around whom our family revolves. She has raised us with important values in life. She explained to us the true essence of love and compassion. She also tells us the importance of spirituality. She has given utmost importance to our education. She coordinates with our teachers in school and helps us with our weaknesses. My mother is an amazing cook and takes care of what we like to eat. She’s  just not a housewife. She is an entrepreneur too. She owns a restaurant managing a staff of 30 boys. It is indeed not an easy job but she manages everything very efficiently. She is an inspiration to all of us. She is indispensable to our family.

My father is a man of strong principles. His presence at home itself gives us a sense of security and hope. He is very gentle, disciplined and strict. He is a software engineer by qualification and works for a multinational company. Since the headquarters of his company is in The United States of America, he frequently needs to travel. I know he feels very sorry that he is not able to spend much time with us due to work pressure and travel but whenever he is at home he makes the best of it. He has a good sense of humor. He makes us laugh with his jokes and keeps telling us about his work experience. I get a lot of insight from it and clarity of what field I can take when I grow up. I have learnt a most important and valuable lesson from him that is being content in life with whatever I have. The atmosphere in our home becomes so cheerful and joyful when he is around. It gives a feeling of a complete family. He is a dutiful son towards his mother. Even though my grandmother doesn’t live with us, my father carries all his duties and responsibilities for her very diligently. I feel proud to be his son. I want to grow like him and take care of my parents the way he does.

My sister is three years older than me. She is a very soft and gentle girl. She is my best friend and a confidant. We fight on silly things but I know she really cares for me and loves me a lot. She always protects me from getting scolded by my mother. She is an artist and helps me with all my drawings. My sister supports and stands by me when seniors in my school bully me. I feel very secure around her when I am away from my parents.

To Conclude

Families can come in certain formats – from the traditional nuclear family to those in which children are raised by relatives to same-sex partners with their children. Many people turn to their friends for love and support and, therefore, consider them their real families. Regardless of what each one of us defines as family, one thing is pretty certain – we need a family to survive happily. Human beings are considered social animals living in groups called families. Family plays many important roles throughout life.  A person without a family is not complete in this world because family is an integral part of all of us.

A family can be a small family, a small nuclear, a big nuclear, or joint family. There are many relationships in the family such as grandparents, parents, wife, husband, brother, sister, cousin, nephew, niece, uncle, aunt, In-laws, etc. My parents love and care for my grandparents very much and always take care of their needs. They give lots of needed things to them whenever we go to the village. My parents talk to my grandparents with mobile almost every day by taking out some free time from their busy schedules. I am so lucky and feel very happy to have such lovely and careful members of my family. I miss my grandparents when I get back home. However, when you look at what a family means, you realize that family can be anyone, the people you were born to, or the people you choose to be with. Love them or hate them, you cannot deny the fact that your family is pivotal in your life and there are quite a few reasons for that.

My Family Essay 300 words

A family is called a group of people who live together as two, three, or more persons. Family relationships can be because of the variety of connections like blood, marriage, adoption, etc. among members of the family. A healthy family is a need for everyone, especially children and old people. Healthy family relationships help in promoting good habits, cultures, and traditions in children. Family plays a very important role in preparing a modern and new generation child mentality to live his whole life in this modern community. Family is an essential part of our life as it provides life security for each member of the family. It provides both financial and emotional support to all.

Family is the foundation of everyone who lives together. It is through a family that we learn our first interactions with the world. It teaches us how to love and be loved, how to offer and receive support, and how to respect others while earning their respect. It provides a different point of view for our viewing angles of the world. The socially acceptable version of family is the people who are biologically related to you. Every person in a family has a special personality to be unique in it. We need to connect emotionally with each other for the well-being of the members such as mental and physical both. As we have to keep our family safe, and strong, and build a powerful emotions amongst each other then we have to maintain a strong bond with each other. Also, the interactions of having to be unique with other members of the family.

Notwithstanding, the interactions need to nurture and strengthen the bonds between family members or the family will drift apart. Strong family relationships mean better communication with each other. The members of the family take out the time to talk to each other whenever they want to spare time. No matter whether the conversations could be about small things or big ones. They understand one another and listen to what the other person has to say. Everyone feels the need to be appreciated. Stronger family bonds mean that when a family member appreciates you, it heightens your self-esteem and in turn makes it easier for you to express your appreciation.

My Family Essay 500 Words

Every family becomes the first school for the children where they receive all the cultures and traditions, and most importantly they receive the basic values of life. Family plays a great role in teaching good manners and habits to the newcomers in the family. It helps in nourishing a better character in society. I am feeling my good fortune to be born into a small nice family and to be a part of it, where I learned a lot of things in my early childhood. My family type is a big nuclear family having six members, mother, father, brother and his wife, and my sister. I live with my family and we are very happy.

Normally, a small family having one set of parents with two children is called a small nuclear family. A family having one set of parents with three or more children is called a big nuclear family. A family having many sets of parents with their children is called a joint family. My Family is the lovely family of the world for me and an important unit of society. A small or a big family becomes of great importance to its members and is considered as the strongest unit of society because various families together make a nice society. People in my family become very caring and give proper guidance from time to time.

My grandparents lived in the village in their homes and once a year during vacations go to meet them and enjoy by spending time with them. Both of them care for me and my brother, and sisters a lot. They generally tell us nice stories at night which we enjoy. We enjoy every moment with them and catch the moments on my mobile. A family provides lots of benefits to all members where everyone shares equal responsibilities within the family. Everyone in the family is emotionally attached to their happiness and sadness. They determine not just the interactions but the thinking that goes behind those interactions as they are emotionally attached to all so they can easily understand one’s feelings.  They help each other in their bad times which gives them a feeling of security. A family provides love, warmth, and security to its all members throughout life which makes it a complete family. A good and healthy family makes a good society and ultimately a good society is involved in making a good country. Hence, a family has a great influence on how we interact with each other and society at large. Our family imparts the knowledge of these norms to us and these norms are called values.

There are advantages and also disadvantages of having and living in a joint family according to the personal point of view depending on the modernization of living emotions and thoughts with our family members like a joint family providing a better pattern of living which is highly contributing to the proper growth. The members of the joint family understand the mutual understandings and adjustments between the people living in it. It teaches the principles of equitable economy and responsibilities and also guides how to stabilize the burden of other members. The members of the joint family become responsible and disciplined as well as they follow the commands and orders of the head of the family with respect.

Also, certain disadvantages are depending on the mentality of the person there may be a lack of proper rules in the joint family and due to this, the members live in a parasite and afterward they become a habit of feeding on other income. Due to this behavior, they start exploiting other innocent members of the family. In certain cases, the person having high status and money-earning members of the joint family generally insults low status or low money-earning members. There may be chances of separation in the joint families because of an imbalance of feelings of generosity, brotherly love, and feeling of oneness.

Families are a very essential part of our lives, whether you love them or hate them.  They play crucial roles in teaching us how to deal with the world. Without a family, an individual’s identity isn’t ever complete. Our family also gives me the feeling that we belong somewhere, they give us our roots. Knowing where we belong gives us the anchor as we need to deal with everything the world throws at us. Having a family is such a basic necessity that often we take it for granted when we have it. Our families stay with us from our first breath to our last. They provide us with the foundation upon which we build ourselves. To us, family is an extension of our life.

Help! I Willfully Blew Up My Marriage. Now I’m Seething That My Ex-Wife Is Living Her Best Life.

I’m not sure i can handle seeing another photo of her on a mountain with her handsome boyfriend..

Dear Prudence is Slate’s advice column. Submit questions here.

Dear Prudence,

My first wife “Trish” and I divorced about five years ago. She didn’t want to have sex after the birth of our kids, so I found sex elsewhere. I was very discreet, but she found out after several years; then she informed me “what’s good for the gander is good for the goose” and she started seeing other people too. That was fine with me, as it gave me more freedom and less paranoia about getting caught cheating. Trish asked for a divorce within the year, and since my girlfriend of two years, “Annie,” had been pressuring me to leave Trish, I thought it was the best outcome for everyone. Annie and I got married soon after the divorce was final.

I see Trish every week when we hand off the kids, who are now teenagers, and I dread it. Not because she’s mean or rude … she is warm and generous and funny. I recognize that she hasn’t really changed; these traits were always there, but they were buried under my resentment over the sex thing, the nagging, the financial stress, etc. On top of that, her career took off almost as soon as we separated, but not soon enough for me to ask for alimony. She’s earning more by herself (thanks GlassDoor) than our combined household income when we were together. Her live-in boyfriend (she has told the kids she’ll never marry again, which feels like an attack on me, her one and only experience with marriage) is a well-known writer and together they travel to exotic places, eat at fancy restaurants, and have a crowd of well-known writer friends. They’re even taking the kids to London this summer while he teaches a workshop there.

I am struggling financially and having some health issues—the recent loss of a visible tooth I can’t afford to replace hit even harder than the diabetes diagnosis—and my now-wife Annie has health issues of her own that make her tired and irritable, and affect her ability to work. I used to be mostly content with my life, even when married to Trish, as long as she wasn’t nagging me. Her new life makes me feel terrible. Like the spotty overweight kid at a high school dance. I feel like in the game of divorce, I lost big, and it’s eating me up. I’m resentful that we had money problems when we were together because she didn’t work very hard—she said she was focused on the kids and the home. I hate that my daughter showed me a picture of her mom beaming happiness with her boyfriend on a mountaintop in Patagonia.

I hate the idea of therapy, and can’t afford it anyway, and the antidepressants my GP prescribed don’t seem to be doing anything. Can you help me re-frame this so I can get over it? How do I live in the life I have now, maybe even improve it, instead of going around and around about all the ways it could have gone differently for me?

—Me: 0, Ex: 100

Dear Ex: 100,

This reads like the fantasy of anyone who’s been in Trish’s position: Leave a cheating spouse and immediately begin thriving in every way, while your ex looks on, full of regret and delayed appreciation for you, with a missing tooth.

But if this letter is not in fact the work of a scorned wife using creative writing to envision a just outcome for her relationship, and is actually your request for advice, I have a few thoughts on how you might begin to feel better:

1.    You should grapple with how your relationship with Trish began to go downhill. I don’t perceive even a hint of regret for the infidelity that started all this. It seems to me that before you get to making peace with the mistake you made by looking outside your marriage for sex, you should actually acknowledge to yourself that it was a mistake. You probably felt like you didn’t have any other options and I get that, but there were steps you could have taken before betraying your wife’s trust.

2.   Once you’ve had a chance to sit with that, you can forgive yourself and also remind yourself that you weren’t actually that happy with Trish. You didn’t have any intimacy, you felt nagged, and the most positive word you used to describe your relationship was “content.” So you actually never had the option of being with the current, jet-setting, high-earning, happy version of her. That wasn’t on the table for you. My guess is that a lack of connection between the two of you made your marriage a place where she was unlikely to thrive the way she is now. It’s possible things started falling into place for her after you split because she had the partner she needed, and all of his unconditional support. Maybe, for example, when she was asking him to pick up some household duties while she was in the midst of an intense job search, he didn’t accuse her of nagging but instead happily agreed and also offered to do mock interviews with her. I’m not saying that to shame you, but to suggest that the right spouse can bring out the best in us—and that kind of dynamic is available to you, too!

3.    Even as you try to let go of the idea that it could have been you married to Trish 2.0, give yourself permission to feel jealous. Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it definitely eliminates some of the things that can make happiness tough, and you’re not wrong to wish you had the financial security Trish has, especially as you struggle with things like affording healthcare. But then maybe try to replace the jealousy with a different way of looking at your ex’s seemingly charmed new life: What if it’s not an indication of your failure, but proof that a major change in fortune is available to all of us, including you? If Trish went from financially struggling, not working (and I assume being pretty devastated that her husband was cheating on her) to beaming at the top of a mountaintop on an expensive vacation, isn’t that proof that this kind of change is possible? Could you start to imagine it for yourself and maybe look at her as inspiration rather than competition?

4.    Keep trying new antidepressants. All the reframing in the world won’t make you feel better if your brain is insisting that your life sucks, so medication might be the most efficient remedy. Also, commit to finding a therapist with a sliding scale and meeting with them for six months. You don’t have to love it! Just try it. Worst case scenario, it will be a place to share all the thoughts you’ve shared in this letter repeatedly, week after week, until they don’t feel as overwhelming.

5.    Don’t make the same mistakes with Annie—being critical of her limitations instead of working on your own—that you did with Trish. Two thriving ex-wives would be too much to handle! But on a more serious note, you have someone who loves you, which is more than a lot of people can say. Even if you aren’t thrilled with your life at the moment, you can make it a point to make hers better through simple things like being understanding when she’s tired, trying to cheer her up when she’s irritable, listening to her and affirming how tough it is to live with health conditions, and assuring her that things will get better. In other words, invest in this relationship in the way you didn’t in your first marriage. In the short term, it will take your mind off other people, and in the long term, it could lead to a partnership and life that excites you.

I (32F) went no contact with my dad about a decade ago for a lot of reasons, but mostly that I couldn’t handle his flagrant narcissism or taking his mood swings out on my voicemail. It’s been great not ending a phone call a day in tears. Now, however, my brother is getting married, and I know we’ll be seated at the same table at the reception. There’s a chance that 10 years, having a baby granddaughter, and getting to see his son married (always a goal) will have him in a good mood, but that might swing over into maudlin (“princess why did you abandon me,” etc.). I have no idea how to navigate a dinner with him. Do I just ignore him? Treat him like an old acquaintance? What do I even say? I told my brother “don’t start no shit won’t be no shit,” as I am perfectly capable of being polite. I just don’t know how to act when I see him again, or what to say. Thank god it’s an open bar.

—Scared of Small Talk

Dear Small Talk

If your brother understands the nature of your relationship with your dad, maybe he would consider placing you at a different table? Making any demand about someone else’s wedding day is always tricky—and of course you don’t want to send the stressed-out couple into an anxiety spiral over seating arrangements—but a gentle “no problem if not!” request might solve your problem.

Plan B: Do you have a friendly cousin or former neighbor who might be willing to do a good deed and simply switch seats with you? Because, keep in mind, one thing they don’t do at weddings is check tickets before you take your seat. If anyone asks questions about your table assignments, you can simply say you got mixed up and quickly pivot to “Doesn’t the bride look beautiful?”

Plan C: Minimize any discomfort by taking your sweet time making your way to the table. Be the last one to leave the cocktail hour, make a long stop in the bathroom to freshen up, and talk to whoever you run into on the way there. By the time you sit down, you’ll have shortened the time before the first dance and speeches are underway. Greet your dad with something light that places the focus on your brother or the bride rather than the two of you. Think: “Hi Dad. Can’t believe Tom is all grown up and married! Doesn’t he look great?” Then plan to make intense conversation with a non-Dad person seated near you. Finally, if he gets out of line despite all this, have an exit plan. Pretend to take a call, step outside, and chat with a friend who you’ve prepared to be available at this moment until it’s safe to return, when dancing has begun and you can easily lose your father in the crowd.

Dear Prudence Uncensored

“I mean, I know I would hesitate to seat two people together when one of them was going into the event with a “Don’t’ start no shit won’t be no shit” spirit. That basically tells me there will be some shit.”

Jenée Desmond-Harris and Joel Anderson discuss a letter in this week’s Dear Prudence Uncensored —only for Slate Plus members.

I’m in my early 30s and have spent the last 10 years living and working in the U.K. with my British husband. I’ve always daydreamed about moving back to the U.S., if just for a temporary stent, and my husband is now on board! Only, now I’m a little worried. Despite growing up in the U.S., I’ve spent my entire career in the U.K., where the work-life balance is great. I work seven-hour days, get 40 vacation days a year, never do overtime or work late, and employers are legally obligated to consider all requests for flexible working. Are the stereotypes about American workplaces—that everyone works long hours, that you’re lucky if you get a couple weeks off per year—actually true? No one seems to post this info in their job ads. I’m excited by the idea of moving back, but I don’t know if a miserable work grind is worth the better weather and delicious Mexican food.

—Work to Live vs. Live at Work

Dear Work to Live,

I do think the stereotypes are generally true, but there are definitely exceptions, so I wouldn’t want you to give up on your American Dream and decent burritos without doing a little more research. You need to know what things are like in your specific industry, and at the companies you plan to interview with. To get that information, poke around on GlassDoor and consider identifying people in roles like the one you see yourself in and reach out on LinkedIn for informational interviews, where you can delicately inquire about “culture” and “work-life balance.” Another option, if you’re truly open to the U.S. experiment being temporary, would simply be to move and start working (for the employer who seems the least like a sweatshop based on what you can learn during the hiring process) with a plan to simply quit and move back if you’re miserable. The very idea of having an out might make the grind feel more bearable, at least for a time.

My sister-in-law is 23 and refuses to learn how to drive. Her parents chauffeur her everywhere, despite the fact that our part of the country makes it nearly impossible to get anywhere without a car. My father-in-law lost his job and got offered another one out of state. Only my SIL doesn’t want to go with them, since her school and friends are here. My husband and I live on the outskirts of the city, so any travel is a trek through horrible construction and traffic. My in-laws want us to put up with my SIL until she graduates next year.

My husband wants to do a trial run. I refuse. I work from home, so I am going to be the one driving Miss Daisy around. My SIL is not disabled in any way. I have suggested that she needs to look into moving in with a friend or learn to drive before the move. She got upset and accused me of not caring about her education. I told her it wasn’t my job to hold her hand like her parents do. This is a huge bone of contention between my in-laws and me. My husband thinks I am being unreasonable. A big part of me keeping my remote position was that I don’t want to deal with the daily grind of traffic. And the university is clear on the other side of the city.

Dear No Drive,

You work from home, not from your car. A remote job does not make you available! Why don’t people get this? “I’m not willing to drive her anywhere during my workday, or at any other time that it’s not convenient for me. It’s fine for her to stay with us, but I want to be clear that she can’t count on me for transportation,” could have been the beginning and end of this conversation. That, and perhaps suggesting your sister-in-law familiarize herself with Uber.

In any case, it’s not your business whether your SIL learns to drive or was parented well—and I wish you would have stayed on topic and avoided escalating things by telling her what she should be doing. In fact, I wish you would have spoken only to your husband. This is his sister, and if he wants her to live in his home, he can figure out the logistics. To get this point across, it might actually help to agree to a trial run. You can demonstrate during that time (by repeating, “Sorry, I’m working right now! The bus schedule is available online”) that you are not a chauffeur.

What is the etiquette for wedding showers when you are having a small destination wedding? My fiancée (28F) and I (37M) are planning a wedding next year, and it is going to be a small destination wedding with a small guest list. Neither of us ever wanted a big wedding (think immediate family and a few close friends, about 20-25 guest list total). My mother is asking me what to do about wedding showers. Apparently, the tradition is that everyone who was invited to the wedding is invited to the shower. I had no idea that was the convention, but it makes sense. I have a much larger extended family than my fiancée does and she is estranged from part of her family on top of that.

I am not sure what to tell her. What is the convention these days for something like that? Since we are having a small wedding, I am most concerned about not offending anyone or to have something seem like an attempt to get gifts. I discussed it with my fiancée and she does not expect my mother or our family to do anything. She will have a shower and obviously my mom would be invited, but she is not expecting anything with our larger family. This seems fine to me. Is that the norm in this situation?

—Unfamiliar with Shower Dynamics

Dear Shower Dynamics,

I really think a lot of wedding etiquette and tradition (even the idea of having multiple pre-wedding events that people are expected to attend) originated at a time when everyone lived in the same place as all their friends and family and had the wedding in the church basement. Inviting guests who are spread out throughout the country to an event at a separate destination really changes things. So instead of looking to rules or how things are typically done, we should focus on the bigger goal: Celebrating in a way that makes you happy, while considering the feelings of those involved enough so that they come away with warm fuzzy feelings about your union—or at least aren’t so offended or inconvenienced that they rant about you in their group chats.

In this case, your fiancée is happy with one small shower with her friends, so that’s what she should have. I can’t imagine anyone in your extended family expecting to be invited. If your mom would like to host something shower-ish and your fiancée is okay with it, something like manicures and/or brunch (no gifts) at the destination, in the day or two before the wedding, just for the women who are there, would be a nice touch.

My daughter is getting married and is on a tight budget. She did not give my sister a plus one because she hasn’t dated anyone in years. My sister is upset that she did not get a plus one. My daughter also did not give any other guests a plus one who is not dating anyone. My sister called my daughter and told her she should not have a wedding if she can’t afford one. I don’t know what to say to my sister. My sister is upset because she says she is over 60 years old and should be allowed to bring someone. I understand she is lonely, but my daughter does not want someone at the wedding she hasn’t met.

—Upset and Hurt at My Sister

Dear Upset and Hurt,

This response sort of builds on the previous one. While there’s no rule that says you have to offer a plus one to guests who are coupled, it’s a really nice thing to do if you have even the slightest interest in people having a positive experience with your big day or thinking nice thoughts about you. But since your daughter made a different choice, it was your sister’s job to take that information and use it to decide whether or not she wanted to attend. “I’ve been on this earth for 60 years and I deserve to have someone to talk to at the reception as much as everyone else” is a perfectly reasonable stance, but it’s one you say to yourself as you check “Regrets,” not one that you call the bride and yell about. She was way out of line for that.

But to answer your question about what you should say to her: You don’t have to mediate this dispute! Your daughter is grown up enough to be married and therefore grown up enough to manage family relationships on her own. You can leave it at “I’m sorry to hear that” and quietly hope she backs out so your daughter can invite someone who isn’t a bully in her place.

Classic Prudie

While trying to print a file on my husband’s laptop, I accidentally clicked on a folder that contained images of naked women, including one picture of someone who seemed underage. When I confronted my husband about this, he said that he wanted to try drawing those pictures. He did indeed take up drawing recently, but I’m still uncomfortable with that one picture .
