Sections of a Scholarship Application Letter (Format)

A scholarship cover letter should have different sections and paragraphs, with each part serving a different role:

Introduction

Provide your contact information, e.g., full names, address, and telephone number. Briefly introduce yourself to the scholarship committee or individual and add a milestone achievement to draw their attention. 

First Paragraph

Your introductory paragraph should focus on your educational and career goals. Discuss your interests and show passion in the chosen area of course work. Give the funding organization all the reasons to choose to invest in you and help further your education. In simpler terms, show your worth.

Second Paragraph

The second paragraph needs to focus on your strengths. If you have participated in any extracurricular activities or you have had your hands on any community work, include it in this paragraph. Any academic accolades and awards should also be listed in this section. The second paragraph is usually all about selling yourself and your capabilities to the decision-makers of a scholarship.

Third Paragraph

In this section, talk about why it should be considered for the application. Speak directly to the individual or organization that is handling out the money in a professional manner. However, refrain from acting desperate for money, but rather, desperate for education. It is not wrong to talk about books, food, housing, and other school costs.

You can add the fourth paragraph if there is much to talk about.

Call to action paragraph

This is the last paragraph of your letter. Close strongly by highlighting any talents or special skills you possess and letting the funding company or individual feel confident that the course work will be completed. Restate your educational and career goals, and include a call-to-action statement.

Length of your cover letter

The letter should be around 1-2 pages maximum. Use font 12 and double spacing to make it easy to read through.Proofread your letter for clerical errors to ensure it is perfect.

The structure of a scholarship motivation letter

Scholarship motivation letters vary by award, but they usually consist of three elements:

• An introduction
• Three body paragraphs
• A conclusion

Your introduction should include your name, level of education and the degree program.

Your first body paragraph should include any work-related experience you have. This can include both paid and unpaid internships. You should show the growth of your career in chronological order. Finally, suggest where your career will go with continued education.

Your second body paragraph should explain what you hope to gain from your education. Think of which problems you aim to solve or uncover.

Your final body paragraph should explain your holistic plans for the future. Some ideas for inspiration:

• You can include extra education you plan to pursue after education.
• You can write about companies or agencies you’d like to work for after graduation.
• You can talk about programs or organizations you would like to develop.

Finally, your conclusion should re-emphasize why you are a good candidate for the scholarship.

What NOT to include when writing a scholarship motivation letter

Your scholarship motivation letter should be well-written with no grammar or spelling errors. Use a professional tone and advanced phrasing (no slang). Provide specific examples about your past, present and future. Stay away from vague generalizations. Vagueness suggests a lack of care or knowledge. Neither of  these are impressive to a scholarship review committee.

Some final tips

Writing a motivation letter for scholarship applications takes time and commitment. Plan what you will say in advance, and allow at least three days to write the letter, review it, step away from it and edit it. This extra time will provide the best chance of success with your application.

We recommend submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) regardless of whether you think you will qualify for financial aid. The factors determining aid eligibility are complex, so you may qualify for a federal student loan even if it seems unlikely to you. Many states use the FAFSA to determine eligibility for state-level student aid as well. Some aid is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so submitting the application in a timely manner is wise.

Also by October, you should know whether you will be registering to take any AP exams. The College Board usually requires all AP test-takers to register for their exams by November 15, but your high school may impose an earlier deadline for registration. Make sure you know and are on track to meet those deadlines.

By May, you should have received responses for all your college applications. Of the schools that granted you admission, you should have narrowed down your options and decided where you’d like to attend. Now, it’s time to make it official.

Note that if you were accepted to a school on early decision, you will have to complete this step of the process much earlier in the year—usually by February.

During June and July

By this point, you’ve accepted admission to a college and you’ve graduated from high school—but we’re still going. Now that you’ve officially wrapped up your high school career, it’s time to tackle these last remaining tasks: submitting AP scores and official transcripts.

Send these materials in June if possible, and check with your prospective college for its specific deadlines—they are usually in early or mid-July.

Note: Admissions decisions for this program are made on a rolling basis. All applications must be received by the deadline in order to be considered for the following fall term.

What makes a competitive applicant?

The program takes a holistic approach to admissions. That means we consider a combination of GPA, relevant work experience, experience in physical therapy, strong letters of reference, volunteer or service activities, leadership activities, and honors and awards.

Applicants should demonstrate strong academic backgrounds and life experiences to be competitive. These may include additional PT volunteer work over and above the minimum 40 hours, volunteering in a community setting other than PT, significant leadership experience, research activity, scholarship history, and significant academic or community volunteer awards.

Admissions Requirements

• Clemson University students who are on the Accelerated Pathway track must provide signed verification of Clemson general education requirements validated by the Clemson Registrar’s Office by time of matriculation into MUSC.
• Coastal Carolina University students who are on the Accelerated Pathway track must provide signed verification of CCU general education requirements validated by the CCU Registrar’s Office by time of matriculation into MUSC.
• Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score.  Applicants should strive for GRE scores in the 60th percentile or above on each section. We use the highest score on each section across all GRE test attempts so it usually benefits the applicant to take the test more than once. All official scores are to be received on or before the deadline in order to be considered. Our PTCAS GRE school code is 7338.
• Complete 39 hours of prerequisite coursework at a regionally accredited college or university .. A minimum of 31 hours need to be completed by the application deadline. The remaining hours must be completed by matriculation. In-person and online courses from regionally accredited institutions are accepted (see course list below).
• Two references from individuals who know you and your abilities .: One from a physical therapist who supervised you in the clinic and a second from a professor or advisor familiar with your academic ability and accomplishments or from an employer if you have been out of school for several years. No personal references will be accepted.
• Complete a minimum of 40 hours of experience  directly related to physical therapy. Clinical observation in physical therapy either as a volunteer or paid employee must also be with a minimum of two different patient populations, for example, pediatrics, adults, sports rehabilitation, or older adults.  At least 10 observation hours are required with the second patient population.  Experience in multiple settings is recommended. Settings may include, but are not limited to, home health, acute care, rehabilitation, and outpatient. Read our FAQs for more information.
• Complete an application through the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS ).
• Complete the MUSC application .
• Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers and First Aid certification through the American Heart Association is required. Students have the option of completing the certifications no more than 45 days prior to the start of the program. 
• Accepted students must be able to meet the Minimum Skills/Eligibility Requirements and sign a form indicating that they meet the minimum skills when upon matriculation. 
• Submit a resume and personal statement through PTCAS.

• Basic science courses must be courses  for science majors . Basic science courses identified in chart above with an *.
• Biology : Prerequisite courses must be offered through the Department of Biology or a Basic Science Department. In addition to Biology I and Biology II, acceptable courses include genetics, cell biology, zoology, human biology and disease and similar courses. Unacceptable courses include botany, exercise physiology taken in Exercise Science and Physical Education departments, and human physiology when used as the physiology prerequisite.
• Human Anatomy   and Physiology including the labs:  Anatomy and Physiology may be taken separately or may be combined and taken as two, four-hour courses. However, if you start a two-part course sequence, you  must  complete both parts (Anatomy and Physiology I & II). If only a 3-semester credit hour course in anatomy is offered, a comparative anatomy or kinesiology course is recommended in addition to the human anatomy course. Also, Vertebrate Anatomy is accepted if Human Anatomy is not offered. Exercise physiology will not meet the Human Physiology requirement.
• Introductory Statistics : This course should include parametric and nonparametric statistics. 
• **Psychology:  Includes 3 semester credits hours of Introductory Psychology and 3 semester credit hours of an upper-level psychology such as Human Growth and Development, Child Development, or Abnormal Psychology. 
• Dual enrollment courses are accepted for prerequisite courses so long as the course appears on your college transcripts.
• Advanced placement credits are accepted for prerequisite courses. Submit your official scores report demonstrating a score of 3 or higher.
• We do not accept transfer of credit, or credit for experiential learning. Applicants do not receive credit for previous coursework and/or experience.

Application Process

• Complete the MUSC Application. Opens July 1, 2024.
• Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended for all college credit courses.
• GRE Scores.
• Two references: One physical therapist and one professor or advisor (see above).
• Personal statement.
• Log of physical therapy experience.

All above information must be received on or before the application deadline to be considered for admission to the program. It is the applicant's responsibility to review the progress of his/her application by viewing the Applicant Progress Portal  and ensure that all application materials (including reference forms, and all official transcripts are received by the application deadline).

Use of Marijuana and/or CBD Products

Marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug and is illegal to purchase in South Carolina. Apart from a narrow and limited scope of codified/documented medical exceptions, it is illegal for individuals to use marijuana/tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in South Carolina. Although cannabidiol (CBD) products may be purchased and used in South Carolina, please be aware that CBD products may contain higher levels of THC than represented on packaging and use of CBD products can result in a positive drug screen for THC/marijuana. Be aware that current drug testing methods cannot accurately ascertain the origins of THC metabolites (i.e., whether from marijuana or CBD products). Your academic program has the authority to conduct random and/or scheduled drug testing; if your test result is reported as positive for THC metabolites (even if you only used a CBD product), your ability to be accepted into the program, progress in the program, and/or successfully complete the program may be negatively impacted.

Scholarship Eligibility

MUSC offers scholarships for which you may be eligible. Some are awarded based on academic achievement; others are awarded based on community service, for example. However, the majority of scholarships awarded at MUSC are based on financial need. This means those scholarships are only awarded to students who need some financial assistance to cover the cost of tuition and fees. If you would like to be considered for a financial need-based scholarship, you must have an up-to-date Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file. Make sure you list Medical University of South Carolina on your FAFSA form, along with MUSC’s code: 003438. We encourage you to submit the FAFSA as early as possible. It is recommended to submit the FAFSA in January if you plan to enroll in the Fall.

How to apply for HELB 2024/2025 Scholarships and Loans through the HEF Portal

The  Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal  is now accepting applications for scholarships, bursaries, and loans for students entering universities.

Government scholarships and loans are accessible for students enrolling in universities, starting from the academic year 2023/2024 onwards. 

Students who enrolled in university prior to 2023 can continue to use the previous government funding and  HELB loan application system .

Grants and scholarships will be granted based on the financial circumstances of the student, similar to how it has been done with  HELB loans .

Type of Loan Application

There are  two  types of undergraduate loan applications:

• First Time Application-This is for applicants who are applying for the first time.
• Second & Subsequent Application-This is for applicants who are applying for the second, third, or fourth time as per the program duration.

Note:  The number of loans one is eligible for depends on the program duration. For example, one is given a loan 4 times for a 4-year program or 5 times for a 5-year programme.

How to apply for a HELB Loan as a First Time Applicant:

• Visit HELB website,  www.helb.co.ke  to access the Student Portal and click on “create an account” to register.
• Once the account is created, log in and select the appropriate Undergraduate First Time Loan Application Form [LAF].
• Read the literature or view the videos on Financial Literacy and participate in the brief exercise online.
• Access and fill out the loan application form.
• Print TWO copies of the duly filled-out Loan Application Form  [Mandatory].
• Have the forms appropriately filled, signed, and stamped by the relevant authorities.
• Any of the following Huduma centers nearest to you: Bomet, Bungoma, Chuka, Eldoret, Embu, Garissa, Nairobi GPO, Kakamega, Kericho, Kilifi, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitale, Kitui, Lodwar, Machakos, Makueni, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Murang’a, Nakuru, Nandi Narok, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Thika and West Pokot for free and secure delivery; or
• HELB Student Service Centre on Mezzanine 1, Anniversary Towers, University Way, Nairobi.
• Retain a complete copy of the Loan Application Form  [This is mandatory].
• Please ensure that you read, understand, and follow the instructions provided at the beginning of the online loan application process including reading and undertaking the HELB Financial Literacy Programme.
• It is recommended that students prudently manage their HELB loans once disbursed to cater for Tuition, books, stationery, accommodation, and subsistence.

Requirements

• A copy of the Applicant’s national ID Card.
• Copies of the parents’ National ID Cards/death certificate where the parent is deceased.
• Copies of both guarantors’ National ID Card.
• A copy of the applicant’s admission letter and KCSE result slip/certificate.
• A copy of the applicant’s Bank ATM/Bank card (for Government sponsored students only).
• A copy of the applicant’s Smart Card from the institution.
• One recent colored passport size photograph of the applicant.

How to apply on the HELB App as a second and Subsequent applicant

• Applicants should visit Google play store and download the HELB Mobile Application.
• Register your details (First name, Phone, Email Address, National ID and KRA PIN number) on the HELB App to generate a PIN which you will use to log in and accept the license agreement. Ensure that you use the Safaricom number that you use for Mpesa transactions and it should be registered in your name.
• Read the mandatory Financial literacy notes and undertake a brief Question & Answer to appreciate the purpose of credit. Scroll down to view results then click “proceed”.
• Click on loans then select undergraduate loans to get the Undergraduate Subsequent Loan Application Form [LAF].
• Follow each step to fill in the required details and submit. A pop-up message will appear to show that you have successfully applied. The loan serial number will also be displayed.

NB:  You will be required to pay Kshs. 1 from your MPESA account during the application process to verify your telephone number.   Please note, the application is paperless hence no printing .

• Students that are not Safaricom subscribers will be directed to the Portal and apply using the application form, after which they will be required to print and submit the form to the HELB Student Service Centre on Mezzanine 1 Floor at Anniversary Towers.
