TitleThe Evolution of Airport Design: Philosophy, Function and Form
TypePhD thesis
AuthorsStewart, R.
Abstract

The aim of this research is to understand the line of development of airport design and consider whether airport architecture is inherently transient and doomed to obsolescence.

Little has been written about the multidisciplinary nature of airport design and why, when, where and how new airport concepts have evolved so this is the contribution of this thesis. Airport design is different from other forms of architecture and engineering by virtue of the sheer scale of the development which is more akin to city planning. Because it is on a city scale it requires the input of many disciplines with different philosophies.

This thesis analyses the role of architectural philosophies such as Futurism in capturing the spirit of flight and facilitating growth and change, the engineering approach to safety and operational robustness, the planning focus on connectivity and the environmentalist’s concern with sustainability.

The primary influences on the evolution of airport design, such as airline growth, aircraft characteristics, safety and security and commercial viability are considered, together with how technological advances in communication, mechanisation, automation and digitisation have helped airports avoid obsolescence.

The evolution of design response has been looked at through several lenses: the architect concerned with the layout and form of the terminal, the engineer focusing on the design of the airfield, the planner developing the airport as an interchange, and the environmentalist making airport development sustainable.

There are case studies to show which concepts have been flexible enough to accommodate growth and change. It concludes that the evolution of airport design can best be categorised in a series of stages each of some two decades.

Pioneering Era 1920 to 1940

Evolutionary Phase 1940 to 1960

Jet Age 1960 to 1980

Transfer Interchange 1980 to 2000

Mega Hub 2000 to 2020

This research considers which airports have been adaptable, survived best and avoided obsolescence. The thesis concludes that airport master plan and terminal concepts have largely evolved in response to increasing traffic volumes, and that those that have proved most durable and avoided obsolescence are those that have planned for growth and change from the outset.

Kinetic Architecture is a branch of architecture that involves the use of mobile or dynamic components in a building or structure, such as movable roofs, walls, and façades. The use of kinetic architecture is highly popular in countries with changing climates, where buildings need to adapt to various weather patterns throughout the year. India is a country with a tropical climate, which makes it an ideal location for the exploration of kinetic architecture. Kinetic façades offer both aesthetic and functional appeal in modern architecture. This paper will explore the working mechanism of kinetic façades, the technology behind the façade's movement, and the various applications of the kinetic facade in modern architectural design. Some case studies has also been included for better understanding of the knetic mechanism. This research paper explores the use of kinetic architecture in India's tropical climate, analyzing case studies of buildings that have incorporated dynamic components into their designs to create more sustainable, energy-efficient, and comfortable spaces.

Airport complexes are considered, where a part of long span premises is covered by awning covers. In Ukraine, it is proposed use awning covers for buildings and structures that are to become composition components in developing the airport building.

Tall buildings are slender versatile structures and want to be investigated to establish the importance of wind elicited oscillations or excitation on and across the direction of wind. Wind could be a development of nice complexness owing to the various flow things arising from the interaction of wind with structures. Wind consists of a large number of eddies of varied sizes and movement characteristics carried on in an exceedingly. general stream of air moving relative to the earth’s surface. This research paper discusses the analysis adopted for the evaluation of tall building under effect of Wind force and examines 30-storied building. This is analyzed under an effect of wind using ETABS. Tall building of height 99m has been analyzed for Chikkamagaluru region. Indian standard code of practice IS-875 (Part 3: 1987) is used for analysis. Here, the lateral story displacements, story shears and story drifts are analyzed for the same wind speeds in different direction for the same structure of dimension (15m X 25m).

The design process of structural planning and design requires not only imagination and conceptual thinking but also sound knowledge of science of structural engineering besides the knowledge of practical aspects, such as recent design codes, bye laws, backed up by ample experience, intuition and judgment. In the present study 2cellars+G+14 building at Yen dada, Visakhapatnam, India is considered for the study. The study involves the construction of substructure of building, which includes site selection, soil test, leveling, earth work, foundation, retaining wall, columns, beams & slab .In order to design them, it is important to first obtain the plan of the foundation& retaining wall that is, positioning of the particular type of foundation, columns, beams etc. Thereby depending on the suitability; plan layout of beams and the position of columns are fixed. The reinforcement provided is HYSD BARS Fe500 as per IS: 1786-1985. Safe bearing capacity of soil is calculated. Retaining wall is constructed to retain the excavated soil. Footings are designed based on the safe bearing capacity of soil. Isolated, combined footings & raft foundation are constructed in the site.
