MASTER OF SCIENCE (INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTING)

Master of Science (International Accounting) programme aims to produce graduates who possess international perspective in accounting and management with professional skills and prepare them for the challenges of managing organisations in the competitive current global business environment. Students should be able to make judgements by applying knowledge gained; lead and engage in managerial teams; contribute new knowledge and advance their knowledge for the benefits of their organizations; and practice ethical and professional values in providing their services.

Applicants must possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in the field of Accounting or related fields with Honours from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of at least 2.50; or
  • A Bachelor’s degree in the field of Accounting or related fields from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of 2.00 to 2.49 with at least three (3) years relevant work experience, subject to an interview by the Postgraduate Committee; or
  • Candidates without a qualification in the related fields or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the programme and meet the minimum CGPA based on (a) to (b); or
  • A Diploma from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with at least ten (10) years of relevant work experience, 35 years or older and passed APEL assessment (level 7); or
  • Any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; and
  • Fulfil the English language requirement as set by the University Senate.

All international candidates should meet any one of the following English language requirements set by the University before they are accepted for admission.

  • TOEFL score of between 477 to 549 for Paper Based Test
  • TOEFL score between 53 to 79 for Internet Based Test
  • IELTS of Band 5.5
  • MUET of Band 3.0
  • Cambridge English Advanced Test score of between 162 to 168
  • Pearson Test of English Academic score of between 42 to 49
  • TOEFL Score of 550 and above in the Paper Based Test
  • TOEFL Score of 80 and above in the Internet Based Test
  • IELTS of Band 6.0 and above
  • MUET of Band 4.0 and above
  • Cambridge English Advanced Test score of 169 and above
  • Pearson Test of English Academic score of 50 and above
  • Obtain a degree from any institutions with English language Education System
  • Obtain a degree from any Public University in Malaysia with English as a language of instruction
  • Obtain a degree from any Private University or College University in Malaysia that are listed in Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR)
  • Students who do not meet any of the above English language requirement will not be allowed to register for courses or continue with their programme of study. They may attend the Intensive Language Course for International Students that will prepare and assist them for their MUET examination.

Master Theses

The number of supervised theses is based on the capacity of the Full Professorship of Financial Accounting. We strongly recommend that you only apply for a master thesis if you conducted your project study or an elective course at our chair. Students from other disciplines must have attended at least one of our seminars before they can apply for a thesis.

Application process:

  • Select a topic from the list of open topics below. If no topics are listed, we are currently not offering any new topics. In this case you can either wait until new topics are announced or apply with your own topic proposal (see details below). The listed topics can be written in either English or German unless otherwise stated.
  • If you have chosen to pursue your master thesis on one of the provided topics, kindly send your CV and your transcript of records as separate files to your assigned thesis supervisor. Additionally, please develop 2-3 research questions . Each research question should include the question itself, along with a brief description of the motivation, the data to be used, and/or the methodology to be applied. Please ensure that the description and the research question collectively do not exceed half a page (see details below).
  • The registration date, i.e., the starting date for your thesis must be within the next 7 days. This means that you must start working on your thesis immediately and cannot "reserve" a topic. We do not provide any more information on the topic before the registration is completed than the information given in the table.
  • We evaluate your application and check whether you fit our qualification profile. Please wait until your potential supervisor confirms your registration. If we receive more than one suitable application on the same topic at the same time, we will assign the thesis according to the first-come-first-serve principle.
  • After receiving an acceptance email from your supervisor, both of you will discuss all further details regarding content, methodology and timeline.
