Festivals in India are celebrated with great zeal. Indian festivals are worth witnessing as they are the most popular and colourful festivals. Be it Holi, the Queen Festival of Colours or Diwali the festival of crackers and rangoli, all are marked with great historical significance that tells about Indian Mythology. One of the most popular and biggest festivals in the world, Kumbh Mela, is also celebrated in India, where millions of devotees gather to offer their prayers.

Every festival has its own story and belief. People follow and respect their traditional values and do fasting on festivals like Chhath Puja , Govardhan Puja , Bhai Dooj , and Karwachauth. All these Indian festivals play an important role in uniting people belonging to different cultures in the same society. 

Apart from these festivals, Onam, Dussehra , Christmas, New Year, Raksha Bandha, etc are also celebrated in India. Republic Day , Gandhi Jayanti , and Independence Day are the National festivals of India which are government holidays in the Indian Calendar. 

Religious festivals include Eid-Ul-Fitr which ends with Ramadan celebrated by the Muslim community, Guru Nanak Jayanti held on 27 November 2023 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji celebrated by Sikhs, and Christmas celebrated on 25 December every year by Christians.

“Diwali” is a Hindu festival celebrated all over the world. It falls on the “new moon day” of Kartikeya month. The people of his kingdom celebrated his victory and homecoming with mirth and merriment. It signifies the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and wit over ignorance.

Diwali preparations often start a month before the festival. People clean and decorate their houses. Schools and colleges usually close for the five-day festival. People wear new clothes and perform various rituals. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is worshipped on this day. Diwali is a time to meet relatives and friends, distribute sweets, and share food. People also celebrate by burning crackers to celebrate Lord Rama’s return and welcome Goddess Lakshmi.

My favourite festival is Diwali, also called Deepawali. Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated Indian festivals.

Story Of Diwali | Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya, his home, after 14 years of exile. As per Hindu mythology, Rama was sent to exile along with his wife, Sita, by his father, King Dashratha, on the wish of his wife Kaikeyi. During the period of their exile, Sita was kidnapped by Ravana and taken to Lanka. Rama, along with his brother Lakshman, defeated Ravana and brought Sita back home.

The festival of Diwali, thus, commemorates the victory of Rama over Ravana, or good over evil. It is celebrated in October or November on new moon day. So, the absence of the moon is filled by lighting diyas and candles.

How It Is Celebrated | People buy new clothes, decorate their houses, and distribute gifts and sweets among friends and relatives. Rangolis are made and diyas are lit. Families and friends play cards with each other, cook delicious food and eat together. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is worshipped on Diwali. It is a time of joy and glee, and also a chance for people living away from their families to reunite with them.

Diwali is also called “Deepawali”. “Deep” literally translates to “Diyas” or little earthen lamps. So, the term Deepawali means an array of diyas put together. It is celebrated in the autumn season and falls in October or November. It symbolises the victory of good over evil. Diwali is a 5-day festival filled with joy, laughter, love and positivity.

Significance Of Diwali

In India, Diwali has been celebrated for the last 2500 years. This was first celebrated when Lord Rama returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. He was accompanied by his wife Sita and younger brother Lakshmana. There they together faced many challenges and difficulties.

Mythology says that Ravana tricked Sita and kidnapped her, taking her to Sri Lanka. Rama and Lakshmana along with others went to Lanka to save Sita. It is believed that they had to tread through a long and challenging journey. They had to fight a long and rigorous battle to defeat the ten-headed demon, Ravana. Hence, the festival of Diwali symbolises the victory of good over evil.

Traditions And Customs

People celebrate Diwali by lighting their houses, and decorating them with diyas and candles. Beautiful and intricate designs of rangoli are made at the entrances of homes. It is a time for people to get together with their families and friends, and make memories. On the day of Diwali, pooja is performed in the evening, followed by the lighting of fireworks. The 5-day festival starts with Naraka Chaturdashi and culminates with Bhai Dooj.

How I Celebrated Last Year

Last year, we celebrated Diwali at my native place. All my uncles, aunts and our family gathered at my grandparents’ house. We reached there a day before.

My grandfather distributed the tasks equally. Elders were assigned the cleaning of the house while we, kids, were asked to make rangolis and decorate the house.

Get Togethers | In the evening, we performed a pooja together and then went to the common space in the village where we met my grandparents’ neighbours. We all made merry as we exchanged sweets and had dinner together.

Visit To Orphange | I and my cousins slept with my grandparents in the living room. Our grandparents told us the stories of how they celebrated Diwali in olden times. The next day, we decided to go to an orphanage and donate clothes and food. We watched a newly- released movie together. On the third day, everybody was sad as it was time to return to routine.

We all had a great time. It was especially enlightening for my younger cousins since they experienced how it was to live in a joint family for the first time. The smile that emerged on their faces as they received gifts and cash from all the elders was worth a sight.

Things We Should Take Care Of

Needless to say, Diwali is a time of gaiety and celebration for a lot us. But keeping in mind certain things as we welcome the festival would ensure that the underprivileged and voiceless are also able to make joy during the festive time.

We should keep a check on the amount of crackers we burn since they pollute the environment. Also, it might be tough for people with any respiratory issues to cope. Crackers are also a threat to stray animals.

Instead of buying decorative items and household stuff imported from other countries, if we stick to buying domestically-manufactured items, small and medium businessmen will also be able to make the most of Diwali.

Helping the needy never harms. During the festival time, when the privileged lot is celebrating, they should also make an effort to share their happiness with those in need.

Holika would not be harmed as she was granted the blessing of not being harmed by fire. After this deed, Holika died and Prahlad was safe due to the blessing of God. Later Hiranyakashyap was also killed by Lord Vishnu.

Process of Festival Celebration

On the occasion of Holi, People wear white dresses and come out of their houses. There is the provision of playing with each other using colors. In some places, flowers, mud, water, etc are used for playing Holi with each other. Some people also drink buttermilk containing bhang and enjoy the festival. Children celebrate this festival with their own age group. They throw the balloons filled with colours on each other.

Dhanteras is celebrated one day before Diwali. There is a provision of buying new utensils or new things for the day of Dhanteras. On the day of Diwali, we decorate our house with rangoli and flower garlands. People wear new attire and worship Lord Ganesha and Lakshmi, considered to be the sign of prosperity and wealth. The doors and windows are kept open so that Goddess Lakshmi may find her way through that. All the houses and shops are decorated with lighted diyas, lights and candles. Children are busy lighting firecrackers.

I like this festival as it is filled with simplicity. I feel very nice when the whole family prays together and we get sweets and laddus as Prasad. The whole colony looks beautiful and lighted.

Rangoli Competition in School on the Occasion of Diwali

Rangoli making is a prominent activity on the festival of Diwali. In our schools before Diwali Holidays are granted, a Rangoli Competition is organized. The students interested in Rangoli making, participate in the competition, and work as a team. Students are very excited about this competition. We can see different types of Rangolis prepared by students using flowers, sand, rice, flour, etc. The three best designs are awarded first, second and third price.

It is the best way of initiating festival vibes in us. There is a short programme as pre-celebration of Diwali and sweets are distributed to us.

There are many stories behind celebrating this festival. It depends upon different cultures and religious beliefs in different regions of the country. The most accepted story is the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after completing the exile period of 14 years. Lord Rama returned after rescuing his wife Mata Sita from the demon Ravana and killing him. People light Diyas express their gratitude, happiness, and welcome Lord Rama on his arrival to Ayodhya.

If we study all the religious beliefs behind celebrating this festival, we will come to know that the moral is the same i.e. Victory over Evil. The lighted Diyas also symbolizes the removal of darkness and spreading the light of happiness, joy, and power.

Pollution-Free Diwali

Every year lot of Firecrackers are burnt on the festival of Diwali which pollutes the atmosphere. The use of firecrackers must be stopped. The pollutants released by burning and fireworks are harmful to us and also deteriorating the Air Quality Index (AQI). We should try to make Diwali a pollution-free Diwali, by saying “No” to Crackers. Infants and animals also fear the noise which comes after burning the crackers and bombs.

Diwali is the festival of lights. The houses, shops, temples all lighted with diyas gives a glorious look. It is the major festival of Hindus but is celebrated by many people of different religions.

Photo essay: Chinese Lantern Festival takes center stage at Franklin Square with 90-foot dragon

The new attraction at this year’s festival is the Palace of Heaven, featuring multiple 40-foot-high lanterns.

More than 100 people spent nearly 30,000 hours putting together the lanterns for this year’s festival . Everything was made entirely by hand, with silk fabric stretched over steel frames. A team of 30 people assembled the lanterns on-site over a one-month period. Artists used 19,000 square feet of silk and 164,000 feet of electric cable.

In addition to the dazzling lanterns, multiple entertainers, including a face changer, hula hoopers, teeter board balancers, chair handstanders, spacewalkers, balancers and folk dancers, will perform onstage at the festival during the evenings. Performers visiting from China include Jiang Kuo, Peng Changrong, Li Guohui, Zhang Jiaxu, Liu Huawei and Liu Xiang.

On Wednesday,  The New York Times  op-ed section  published a blunt essay  from George Clooney , in which the actor and director, one of Hollywood’s more engaged political players, forcefully argues for President Joe Biden to step aside in his campaign for reelection and allow a new candidate to take on Donald Trump in November.

“Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe,” Clooney wrote of the debate performance that has sent Democrats into a panic and that is now dividing the party. “But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw. We’re all so terrified by the prospect of a second Trump term that we’ve opted to ignore every warning sign. The George Stephanopoulos interview only reinforced what we saw the week before. As Democrats, we collectively hold our breath or turn down the volume whenever we see the president, who we respect, walk off Air Force One or walk back to a mic to answer an unscripted question.”

Clooney writes that while it may seem unfair to point out Biden’s perceived cognitive decline given his advanced age, “it has to be fair” because Democracy is at stake. He asserts that running Biden at the top of the ticket will not only lose the Democrats the presidency, it will cost them the House and Senate majority, which is within the grasp of both major parties in November; Clooney says that every single senator and congressional representative that he has spoken to privately agrees with this prediction.

“We Democrats have a very exciting bench,” Clooney asserts. “We don’t anoint leaders or fall sway to a cult of personality; we vote for a president.”

The Oscar winner for the political thriller  Syriana  and nominee for  Good Night, and Good Luc k, which follows the conflict between journalist Edward R. Murrow and U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy, floated the idea of several prominent Democrats stepping up to lead the ticket in November. Clooney suggests in the essay that the nominating process at the 2024 Democratic National Convention could “enliven our party and wake up voters.”

In closing, Clooney gives Biden credit for steering the nation away from the paths of the Trump administration and says he must repeat the feat.

“Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020,” he wrote. “We need him to do it again in 2024.”

According to a news story on the op-ed that The New York Times published Wednesday, two sources said that the gala fundraiser was planned around Clooney’s schedule — not Biden’s — and the event’s timing demanded that in a short window of time, Biden fly from a Group of 7 gathering to California and back to Washington. Following the debate, Biden explained his dismal performance as the result of a cold and jet lag.

Roberts and Kimmel, along with Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg, have not yet commented on whether Biden should stay or step aside , despite several influential celebrity Democratic donors like Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, media mogul Barry Diller, Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel and millionaire Disney heiress Abigail Disney calling on the Democratic party to replace Biden on the ticket.

In response to Clooney’s op-ed later on Wednesday, Michael Douglas, a longtime Biden supporter who hosted a Hollywood fundraiser at his home for the president in April, said he too was “deeply, deeply concerned” about Biden’s reelection prospects after the debate, but he stopped short of withdrawing his support for Biden for 2024.

Following up on he r monologue in support of Biden on Monday’s show, The View ‘s Whoopi Goldberg said that she continues to support th president — even when Douglas and her   cohost Joy Behar said that Biden should have focused on Trump’s lies during the debate. To that notion, a flummoxed Goldberg said, “But then when he does that…You know, you can’t win in this game. I really feel bad for him. If he can’t do the job and we see he can’t do the job, then he’s gotta go, but until I can see that, I’m going to support him.”

Horticulturists, gardening enthusiasts and tourists from far away have all taken note: This is a banner year for hydrangeas from New Hampshire all the way down to the Mid-Atlantic states.

With their vibrant orbs of colorful clustered petals, hydrangeas are a quintessential attraction for many towns on the Eastern Seaboard. After a rainy fall and mild winter, this summer has seen an explosion of blooms.

“This might be the best year for hydrangeas that I’ve seen in at least the last decade,” Greyson Keller, a gardener who owns a landscaping business called the Garden Group in Nantucket, Mass., said.

Here’s what to know about the flowers before they’re gone.

The hydrangea originated in Japan.

The hydrangea was first cultivated in Japan but is native to both Asia and the Americas, according to the National Garden Bureau . The most common variety in North America is the big-leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), whose flowers are often a vivid blue, pink or purple color.

The Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival presented by Invesco QQQ (NYCWFF) has announced the official lineup for its 17th year. Taking place on October 17 to 20, 2024, this year’s festivities promise tons of new programming, a new location, and of course the return of many fan favorite events and chef personalities.

As one of the largest food festivals in the country, NYCWFF celebrates the culinary scene in New York City and beyond over the course of a weekend with a host of events that shine a spotlight on incredibly talented chefs, bartenders, sommeliers, beloved Food Network stars, viral social media personalities, and more who take part in walk-around tastings, intimate happy hours, and once-in-a-lifetime dinners.

This epic event is all in support of NYCWFF’s charitable partner God’s Love We Deliver , which is New York’s only provider of life-sustaining meals and nutrition counseling to those affected by severe and chronic illness. A long weekend of eating, drinking, and giving back? Yes please!

This year The Festival is headquartered in Brooklyn

Big changes are taking place this year, and one of the most notable is the shift to and focus on Brooklyn. That means a host of signature events like the Grand Tasting and Pier Parties will now take place in one, sprawling 450,000 square foot covered location at the new Invesco QQQ Campus at Brooklyn Army Terminal.

“It’s a long time coming,” says Lee Brian Schrager, Festival Founder & Director. “We think it's going to create a better experience for guests to have everything in one campus, and it gives us the ability to manage it better.”

In recent years, the signature events that have taken place on Pier 86 have encountered rain that’s made it tough to enjoy the events to the fullest. “Having the events in a covered space will be a game changer,” says Schrager. “You’re lucky, until you’re not.”

Schrager says that this move also serves as a testament to the innovative culinary landscape thriving in one of New York City's largest boroughs, calling it a full circle moment, as The Festival actually got its start in Brooklyn. “We started in Brooklyn with Burger Bash, but we outgrew it within two years,” says Schrager. “It was a fantastic area for the event, so we’re excited to bring it back knowing it’s really grown to be one of the hottest food destinations.”

In order to make it easy and accessible from Downtown Manhattan, ticket holders will have access to special festival-only transportation via the NYC Ferry that will continuously travel back and forth making it seamless for guests to attend events in both Brooklyn and Manhattan — and it’s only a 12 minute journey from Wall Street. Along with a new location, comes a new headquarter hotel. This year The Wall Street Hotel will act as a perfect base for those attending NYCWFF.

In celebration of the Festival’s new home, NYCWFF will kick off Thursday, October 17 with a new headlining event Brooklyn Eats & Beats featuring celebrated Brooklyn chefs like Esther Choi, Billy Durney, Sean Feeney, Mark Iacono, Michael Solomonov and 25 of Brooklyn’s iconic restaurants (plus Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre serving up ready-to-drink gin & juice) — an event that took place on a smaller scale last year, but quickly showed signs of becoming something much bigger.

“It’s time to freshen it up,” says Schrager. “We’re well aware that we need to keep it fresh and new in order to keep consumers and sponsors excited year after year.”

Nearby at The Lawn Club in The Seaport, actress and founder of Betty Booze, Blake Lively will host a The Betty BOOze Harvest Happy Hour . The usual Drag Brunch is amping up into Drag Disco , a late night party hosted by David Burkta and Neil Patrick Harris. Consider yourself a caviar connoisseur? Scott Conant and Antonia Lofaso are hosting a brand new event — A Caviar & Cocktail Affair — that will make your champagne wishes and caviar dreams come true as the sun sets over the NYC skyline from the 102nd floor of the One World Trade Center in the Aspire One World Observatory.

Put your dancing shoes on because this year Bobby Flay is hosting a Triple Threat Dance Party presented by Treasure Cave alongside Tiffany Derry, Michael Voltaggio, and Brooke Williamson and every attendee will leave with a copy of Bobby’s newest cookbook, Bobby Flay: Chapter One.

Closing out The Festival is the returning JJ Johnson’s The Cookout: A Hip Hop Celebration where all things Black cuisine and hip hop are celebrated featuring some of the best Black-owned restaurants in the area.

Ukrainian evacuees enjoy traditional homeland summer festival in Japan

KAWASAKI -- The Ukrainian summer celebration Ivan Kupala was recently held at a park in this city, south of Tokyo, to cheer up those who fled their home country after Russia's invasion began in 2022. People in traditional costumes sang and danced to the delight of those gathered at the festival.

Ukrainian soldiers recuperating at the Japan Self-Defense Forces Central Hospital in the capital's Setagaya Ward also visited the venue in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, on July 7 and reminisced about their faraway families and friends.

Ivan Kupala is said to originate from an ancient custom held at the time of the summer solstice, which was later combined with St. John's Day to celebrate the birth of John who baptized Jesus Christ. The event has been passed down among the East Slavs including in Ukraine. Women dressed in folk costumes embroidered with plant and animal designs weave floral crowns as they pray for good luck, and then release the crowns in a river.

The festival was organized by the nonprofit organization Kraiany, which supports the livelihoods of evacuees and runs a Sunday school for Ukrainian children living in Japan. As of the end of June, 2,651 Ukrainian evacuees had entered Japan since March 2022, according to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. Some have returned home due to prolonged evacuation, work or family circumstances.

Pupusa Fest, highlighting El Salvador's staple dish, to take place at LA Coliseum

EXPOSITION PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The pupusa, El Salvador's beloved signature dish, has found its place in Southern California and across the United States, and now it will be celebrated at Pupusa Fest, which takes place at the L.A. Coliseum in Exposition Park for the first time on Sunday.

Attendees will not only be able to enjoy traditional pupusas but also live music. Headlining the entertainment lineup is Oro Solido, the internationally renowned group from the Dominican Republic. Other musical acts include La Máquina and Espíritu Libre from El Salvador.

"We feel that our identity should be reflected through pupusas and music," said event promoter Fred Lugo.

The festival, which has been held since 2017 in various parts of the state, will offer exotic and traditional pupusas, from the traditional Revueltas, filled with cheese and chicharrón, to simpler varieties like De Queso, stuffed solely with cheese, and De Frijoles, packed with flavorful refried beans.

"We realized that the pupusa is El Salvador's main dish," Lugo added. "It's a dish that can be shared with friends and family."

Those with a competitive drive will be able to participate in a pupusa eating contest.

The family-friendly event will take place from 12 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $30 for adults and kids 12 and under are free.

The recipe for any successful relationship boils down to both parties being able to show up authentically and fully themselves. Outside of date nights and baecations, it is essential to be emotionally well, intentional with your actions, and work through some of the hard stuff to support your partner best. Two couples in particular, Rita and Theodore Smith and Armani Aliyya and Woody Randall, know what it takes to keep their love thriving and everlasting. During a panel discussion moderated by on-air talent and host of the Healed Girl Era podcast, Gia Peppers , the Smiths and the Randalls share anecdotes of how they have kept their love story going after all these years.

Rita and Theodore Smith went viral on social media after sharing their love story on TikTok . After 43 years of marriage, the New Orleans natives have captured people’s hearts and minds by displaying the strength and bond they have in true Black love. While there have been ups and downs, Rita and Theodore Smith have openly expressed how they have made it work for them no matter what.

Amani and Woody Randall met on television through the well-known series Married At First Sight . While the couple took an unconventional route to jump the broom, they have been together for four years since the show aired. The couple has also recently welcomed a second child into their loving family. Both have great insight into what it takes to keep a marriage alive and how they have supported each other after the cameras turned off.

Why was it important for you to start sharing the love that you have from inside the house to the world?

Rita: It was important for me because I went through the pandemic and was missing my man. I was crying a lot. So I started talking about my man because he had to work so much. And I’m like, ‘I need my man home.’ So I started talking about my man.

Authenticity and vulnerability are imperative to maintaining that special connection with your partner. Rita and Theodore Smith have learned to share how they feel about one another and reassure each other that they are adored and valued. Outside of words of affirmation, it is critical to also set boundaries in your relationship. For Armani and Woody Randall, that was a priority for their partnership.

What boundaries did you all set within your relationship to make sure that the public viewers didn’t affect you all?

Woody: I would say, I think we both looked at each other as a form of a landing board. We both knew that once the cameras leave, producers, execs, and all those people go, we have each other. And we just look to each other for all our needs. If I’m frustrated, I’m happy, or whatever that may be. I think we had a good, solid foundation from the very beginning. Since we didn’t know each other, and met as strangers.

Armani: Yeah, we were kind of like, once they leave, let’s make sure we prioritize what we need. Because at the end of the day, people will tell you everything that they think. They project their ideas. They project what they think is wrong or right. But you all have to look at each other and know you’re my person. You’re my best friend.

The discussion continued with both couples touching on what they love about one another, the biggest blessings and challenges in marriage, and how they overcame obstacles. Being married can be tested, but despite the low points, there is always a way to bring things back to a better level. Peppers asked Rita and Theodore Smith how they had sustained their love and what advice they had for other couples.

Theodore: One of the biggest pieces of advice for Black love to stay together is keeping people out of your marriage. Keep people out of your marriage. Whatever is going on between you and her, keep it between her. You got to get together as Black love and work that out. Whoever they are, don’t walk away from them. Communicate with each other. That’s the key. Many times, we want to walk away.

The panel concluded with Armani and Rita expressing their ways of preparing for the ultimate love. While you may spend quality time with yourself to know yourself better or play from your strengths, anyone deserves unconditional love, and it is possible for everyone.

With 1999’s ‘Bigger & Blacker,’ Chris Rock risked his career — and secured his legacy

School shootings, presidential sex scandals, taxes, racism and the big piece of chicken.

Despite all the ways that the world has changed since Chris Rock stepped onstage to deliver his third special, “Bigger & Blacker,” which premiered on HBO on July 10, 1999, all you have to do is watch it to realize how much the concerns of our country are still the same. Taking the stage in an oversize leather coat, looking like Morpheus from the year’s hit movie “The Matrix,” Rock pierced the heart of the country with a blade of truth that made us laugh until it hurt — and kept going until the pain felt good.

In an era when comedy specials still felt special because only those in the highest echelon were even allowed to have one, Rock’s follow-up to the groundbreaking “Bring the Pain” was a high-wire act that reminded us that the multi-hyphenate — then at the peak of his celebrity — ultimately values one thing above all else: telling jokes that ring true to Black America, with punchlines that are quotable for anyone with a pulse and sense of humor.

All year we’ll be marking the 25th anniversary of pop culture milestones that remade the world as we knew it then and created the world we live in now. Welcome to The 1999 Project, from the Los Angeles Times.

On the heels of filming a major movie (“Lethal Weapon IV”) and anchoring hit TV shows (“Saturday Night Live,” “The Chris Rock Show”), Rock could’ve easily played it safe by softening the edges in his act to avoid turning off the mainstream. Instead he cranked up the volume by doing what every great comic does when faced with controversy — doubling down.

Belied by his diminutive frame (which we now know can take a hit ), Rock’s persona in the 1990s was caustic, aggressive and truthful, down to the way he paced back and forth on stage. The purpose in his jokes matched his stride as he opened with jokes about Columbine and the “trench coat mafia.”

“What the hell is wrong with these white kids shooting up the school? They don’t even wait till 3 o’clock either. Killing people in the morning, that ain’t right!”

In moments like these, comics of Rock’s caliber know how to distill tragedy to its most hilariously simplistic elements. The imagery of a group of homicidal misfit teens having more friends than Rock ever had when he was in school turned mass murder into a joke that slayed his audience.

One has only to replay the crowd reactions throughout the special to see its effect. When was the last time you saw crowd laughter in a special that was almost as funny as the jokes themselves? People falling over on their loved ones sitting next to them, standing up with their best Arsenio-esque “Whoop! Whoop!” and rolling in the aisles like Pentecostals moved by the spirit. The absence of cellphone cameras makes it feel like a moment when the entire crowd at the iconic Apollo Theater in Harlem was in it together, which is how the special made people watching at home feel.

To this day, Rock’s jokes about the differences between men and women — from former President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton to the people in our own families — made “Bigger & Blacker” an instant classic. Most Rock fans can quote the special by heart after 25 years.

Some of the best lines (that we can repeat):

“We don’t need gun control, we need bullet control. I think all bullets should cost $5,000. ’Cause if a bullet cost $5,000 there’d be no more innocent bystanders.”

“It’s all about Mama, Mama, Mama. Nobody give a f— about Daddy. Think about everything a real daddy does … and what does Daddy get for all his work? The big piece of chicken, that’s all Daddy gets.”

“Clinton damn near got impeached for what? For what? Lying about [oral sex] so his wife wouldn’t find out. Is that against the law? Do you need the Supreme Court for that one? You could have took that one to ‘The People’s Court.’ You could have took that one to Judge Judy.”

“We got all these taxes. ... You don’t get the money ‘til you’re 65, meanwhile the average Black man dies at 54. S—, we should get Social Security at 29. We don’t live that long, hypertension, high blood pressure, NYPD, something will get you.”

“All I had when I was a kid was Robitussin. No matter what you got, Robitussin better handle it. ‘Daddy, I got asthma.’ ‘Robitussin!’ ‘I got cancer.’ ‘Robitussin!’ ‘I broke my leg.’ Daddy poured Robitussin on it.”

“They ain’t never curing AIDS, don’t even think about it. There ain’t no money in the cure, the money’s in the medicine. That’s how a drug dealer makes his money, on the comeback. That’s all the government is, a bunch of motherf— drug dealers!”

Even today, most comedy stars at the height of their commercial success wouldn’t get anywhere near half the jokes Rock spouted on stage. Whether fearful of angering half the country, Hollywood executives or activist groups, even the most provocative comics can reach a point where they shy away from poking the bear in favor of a squeaky-clean gig with steady residuals. And it’s possible that “Bigger & Blacker” cost Rock the chance to make an even bigger bag somewhere down the line. But on stage, he proved that the price of greatness trumps the price of gold any day of the week.

Listening back to his jokes, it’s even more amazing how true they remain given where we find ourselves as a nation a quarter century later, on the verge of yet another high-stakes presidential election and with new deadly viruses and racial tensions and suffocating costs of living bearing down on us. Without specials like “Bigger & Blacker” to keep us laughing through the pain, society might just wake up from “The Matrix” and realize that we’re doomed. Just as it was back in 1999, the need for laughter to ease the tension is the primary reason people will always turn to stand-up — and to Rock, who remains the Morpheus of the art form decades later.
