Report: Trump Campaign Wants Biden to Stay in Race as an Easy Target

Scotus ruling on federal power may have major ramifications for health care, st. vincent and grenadines prime minister recounts hurricane beryl’s destruction, an increasing number of migrant women are dying at the us-mexico border, love for the environment.

All we need is LOVE.

There are many things and we can (and should) do to preserve and protect our environment if we want to preserve and protect life on Earth. Reducing consumption of resources, reusing products and materials, and recycling what can no longer be reused are all critical to being more sustainable. However, the most important personal thing we can each do for the environment is to fall in LOVE : L ocal, O rganic, V egetarian/ V egan E ating. (Vegetarians don’t eat any animals; even better, vegans don’t consume any animal products, including eggs and dairy.)

There is consensus amongst the overwhelming majority of the world’s scientists, environmentalists, governments, major corporations, and many others that climate change in the form of global warming is, by far, the most important environmental problem facing life on Earth. Carrying reusable bags, changing to energy-efficient light bulbs, saving water, and driving less are all very good things to do, yet they all pale in comparison to the cool effects of LOVE.

None of these or other positive actions prevent us from doing others, and we should try to do everything we can to live more sustainable lives. However, eating has a much bigger personal impact on the environment – as well as our health and the health of animals – than anything else most of us ever do.

Here’s some LOVE!

Think globally, eat locally!

The average item of food in the U.S. travels approximately 1500 miles from production to consumption. By eating locally and seasonally, you’re reducing your food miles, the amount of distance your food has to travel from farm to table, thereby cutting down on the amount of oil consumed and greenhouse gases emitted. Being a locavore cuts down on traffic and the need for energy-hogging refrigeration, both of which contribute to global warming. These are all benefits for the environment. And any benefit for planetary health is also a benefit for our personal health.

Eating locally means eating fresher and healthier produce, eating fruits and vegetables that are in season and grown in your region. Fresher produce maintains more of its nutrients. That’s not only healthier and tastier for you and your family, but also better for your region’s economy and ecology, supporting local farm families and the local economy while preserving biodiversity and building community. The easiest and most fun way to eat more local is to shop at farmers’ markets, where seasonal produce is abundant and, according to sociological studies, people tend to be more social. Packaging, plastic water bottles, and chemicals, for example, are not local. Specifically, pesticides are almost always not local, so eating organic is also vitally important.

Don’t panic, just go organic!

Organic agriculture means farming without the hazards of synthetic pesticides. Quite simply, agricultural chemicals are toxic and deadly, as is their intention. Author Sandor Katz states that, “Agricultural chemicals kill – and not only plants and insects and worms and birds and fungi and the vast universe of soil organisms; they kill people as well.” Claire Cricuolo, both nurse and chef, relates that, “When you buy organic, you help to promote biodiversity and cut down on the pesticides that pollute our soil, air, and water. You also support natural systems that will ensure the integrity of our farmlands for future generations.”

Organic methods produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions, using only one-third the petroleum as chemicalized crops, while sequestering more carbon dioxide in the soil, thereby being another powerful way to help stem global warming. As with local produce, organic produce also tends to have a higher level of nutrients, studies show, and may be tastier as well. Eating organic is not only healthier for consumers, but is also healthier for farmers, neighbors, animals, insects, and the soil, as well as everyone and everything downstream. Many chefs and other foodies also believe that organic foods taste better.

Another big bonus to eating organic is knowing that you are not consuming any genetically engineered products with their unknown potential personal, public, and environmental consequences.

Alan Greene, M.D. affirms that, “Every little move towards organics is worthwhile.” The most effective ways to become more organic is to (1) “Switch out foods you eat most often”, (2) “Replace the worst offenders”, and (3) “Shop locally, eat seasonally”.

V egetarian/ V egan E ating

Go vegetarian/vegan and no one gets hurt!

It is increasingly clear that eliminating, or at least sharply reducing, the production and consumption of meat and other animal products is the single best thing people can do for human health, animal suffering, worker safety, and environmental sustainability.

The editors of World Watch , an environmental magazine, concluded in the July/August 2004 edition that, “The human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage now threatening the human future – deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, social injustice, the destabilization of communities and the spread of disease.” The November/December 2009 issue of World Watch stated that recent evidence and new calculations reveal that the livestock industry is responsible for 51% – a majority! – of greenhouse gases. Lee Hall, the legal director for Friends of Animals, is more succinct when she states that at the root of almost “every great environmental complaint there’s milk and meat.”

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize laureate along with Al Gore, and head of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, states that the mass production of meat is a major factor contributing to global warming and that, “The single [most effective] action that a person can take to reduce carbon emissions is vegetarianism.” We ignore or deny this critical yet simple information at our individual and collective peril. LOVE is the most powerful antidote, by far, against global warming!

We also need LOVE for our in vironment, the environment inside of us. Vegetarians live six to ten years longer, on average, than those who eat meat. Vegetarians have much lower rates of heart disease, cancer, and stroke – the three leading causes of death in the U.S. – as well as more protection against diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, hypertension, gout, kidney diseases, and even Alzheimer’s.

What you eat on a daily basis is actually more important than what you buy, save, recycle, or even drive. Eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) is like packing old light bulbs, single-use plastics, styrofoam, hormones, antibiotics, tar, toxic chemicals, chainsaws, SUVs and other deadly clunkers into your pantry all the time. Get the junk out of your pantry and diet! Get the junk out of your community and environment! Get the junk out of your body! LOVE yourself and your family!

If you’re not ready to fall madly in LOVE, it’s OK to flirt with it. LOVE doesn’t have to be all or nothing and it doesn’t have to be all at once. You can play with your food, but make sure to have fun.

LOVE can also stand for L iving O pposed to V iolence against the E nvironment. We can stop the violence in the world by stopping the violence on our plates. More LOVE means more peace, inside each of us, within our families, and around the world, for this and future generations. Besides being more compassionate toward animals and much healthier for you and your family, as well as lifting your spirit and boosting your energy, LOVE can help save the world by preserving and protecting our precious planet.

As they say in the 12-step programs, it’s about “Progress not perfection.” What path are you on? In which direction is the Cupid’s Arrow of your life pointed?

Spread the LOVE!

The environment is the key to the existence of life on earth, and thus kids need to know about its importance as they are the future pillars of the world. Here we present 10 lines on environment essay for class 1 and 2 kids.

  • The environment is a gift that needs a lot of nurturing.
  • The environment is the surrounding in which we live.
  • It consists of both biotic and abiotic elements.
  • A clean environment is essential for the peaceful and healthy survival of humans.
  • Human activities negatively affect the environment. It includes pollution, global warming, extinction of species, etc.
  • Government and citizens alike should take steps to protect our environment.
  • We must spread the message on the importance of the environment to everyone.
  • More trees must be planted to balance the ecosystem.
  • The usage of plastic bags that harm the environment must be stopped.
  • The use of recycled products must be promoted.

Every species on this planet is dependent on the environment. We, humans, are also a part of it, and our primary responsibility is to protect the environment and teach future generations. The following short paragraph on the environment will guide kids to write an effective essay:

The environment plays a vital role in the existence of life. It consists of plants, animals, food, natural resources, water, and so on. Ancient humans lived in a natural environment and hence led a healthy life. But in recent times, the environment has been highly harmed due to human selfishness and greed. If this continues, it may endanger human existence. Thus every citizen must protect our environment. There are plenty of little things to do daily to help preserve our environment, such as using public transport instead of private ones to control pollution, preserving natural resources, using eco-friendly products and services, planting more trees, etc.

All life on earth is dependent on the environment for its survival and basic needs. We utilise all the resources provided by nature and benefit from them but fail to protect the same. Given below is a short essay for class 1, 2 and 3 students about the environment:

Mother Earth is the home of many living creatures. But we are destroying it little by little due to mindless behaviour. To prevent further damage, we must control pollution, preserve natural resources, plant more trees and reduce the use of harmful chemicals and plastics. To create awareness about this, ‘World Environment Day’ is celebrated every year on June 5. We must never forget that it is an individual and a collective responsibility to preserve our environment so that we and our future generation can lead a happy and healthy life. There are so many ways we can contribute to saving our environment. We can use cloth bags instead of plastic ones. We can opt for public transport than using our private vehicle to cover short and long distances. Planting more trees and mindfully availing of natural resources are steps towards a sustainable environment. Our thinking today will secure the future for upcoming generations.

“Nature is the art of God”. But the need to protect it is vital now. In this article, let’s learn about the significance of the environment and explore what we can write in an essay for class 3 about this topic. Here is a descriptive essay about the environment:

What Is The Environment?

Everything surrounding us comes within the scope of the environment. It includes biotic and abiotic elements, which together help maintain ecological balance and make human survival possible.

Significance of Environment

  • Warehouse of natural resources:  The environment provides us with all the necessary resources to carry on our day-to-day routine. It is a life support system for all living beings.
  • Medium of livelihood:  The livelihood of billions of people depends on the environment. Most of them are engaged in agriculture to earn income; others rely on different water bodies.
  • Provide food:  The environment provides food, one of the basic necessities of life.
  • Provide medicine:  Nature is a rich source of medicine. In ancient times, people got treatment mostly from plants. More than one-third (39.1%) of all FDA-approved drugs are of natural origin. Many scientific studies also reveal that spending time in nature can increase one’s lifespan.

Major Causes Of Environmental Degradation

Environmental degradation refers to the depletion of natural resources and the ecosystem, and it can happen due to two causes – natural and manmade. Natural causes are beyond our control. But we can prevent human causes. Pollution is mainly caused by exhaust gas emitted from factories and vehicles. Due to the industrial boom, a demand-supply imbalance of environmental resources is there. Human’s surge in urbanisation and increased demand for wood has led to rapid deforestation. It further leads to an imbalance of oxygen and CO2 in the atmosphere. Excessive generation of non-biodegradable waste and increased use of chemical pesticides have led to degradation of land quality and soil erosion.

Measures To Protect The Environment

Following are the simple steps to safeguard our environment:

  • Planting trees is one of the most popular and effective methods to preserve the environment.
  • Minimise water use by reducing bath time, recycling, etc.
  • Conserve electricity by switching off electrical appliances while not in use. Use energy-saving appliances.
  • Consider using eco-friendly products.
  • Environmental education and awareness must be given top priority.

Apart from assisting you in writing your essay, this article will help your children understand how precious their environment is and ways to safeguard it. Mother Earth has provided us with enormous benefits, and we must protect our environment.

From the above points, it is clear that the natural environment is a treasure to humanity. But due to our irresponsible actions, we are continuously harming nature without knowing its consequences. Thus we must learn to respect and protect the environment before it is too late. Change must begin from us by setting a positive example for our future generation to follow and enjoy the innumerable benefits of nature.

“A better environment ensures a better tomorrow.”

Essay on Understanding and Nurturing Our Environment

The environment is everything that surrounds us – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil beneath our feet, and the diverse flora and fauna that inhabit our planet. It's not just a backdrop to our lives; it's the very essence of our existence. In this essay, we'll explore the importance of our environment, the challenges it faces, and what we can do to ensure a sustainable and thriving world for generations to come.

Our environment is a complex and interconnected web of life. Every living organism, from the tiniest microbe to the largest mammal, plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. This delicate balance ensures the survival of species, including humans. For instance, bees pollinate plants, which produce the oxygen we breathe. Nature is a masterpiece that has evolved over millions of years, and we are just one small part of this intricate tapestry.

Importance of Environment

The environment is crucial for keeping living things healthy.

It helps balance ecosystems.

The environment provides everything necessary for humans, like food, shelter, and air.

It's also a source of natural beauty that is essential for our physical and mental health.

The Threats to Our Environment:

Unfortunately, our actions have disrupted this delicate balance. The rapid industrialization, deforestation, pollution, and over-exploitation of natural resources have led to severe environmental degradation. Climate change, driven by the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, is altering weather patterns, causing extreme events like floods, droughts, and storms. The loss of biodiversity is another alarming concern – species are disappearing at an unprecedented rate due to habitat destruction and pollution.

Impact of Human Activities on the Environment

Human activities like pollution, deforestation, and waste disposal are causing environmental problems like acid rain, climate change, and global warming. The environment has living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components. Biotic components include plants, animals, and microorganisms, while abiotic components include things like temperature, light, and soil.

In the living environment, there are producers (like plants), consumers (like animals), and decomposers (like bacteria). Producers use sunlight to make energy, forming the base of the food web. Consumers get their energy by eating other organisms, creating a chain of energy transfer. Decomposers break down waste and dead organisms, recycling nutrients in the soil.

The non-living environment includes climatic factors (like rain and temperature) and edaphic factors (like soil and minerals). Climatic factors affect the water cycle, while edaphic factors provide nutrients and a place for organisms to grow.

The environment includes everything from the air we breathe to the ecosystems we live in. It's crucial to keep it clean for a healthy life. All components of the environment are affected by its condition, so a clean environment is essential for a healthy ecosystem.

Sustainable Practices:

Adopting sustainable practices is a key step towards mitigating environmental degradation. This includes reducing our carbon footprint by using renewable energy, practicing responsible consumption, and minimizing waste. Conservation of natural resources, such as water and forests, is essential. Supporting local and global initiatives that aim to protect the environment, like reforestation projects and wildlife conservation efforts, can make a significant impact.

Education and Awareness:

Creating a sustainable future requires a collective effort, and education is a powerful tool in this regard. Raising awareness about environmental issues, the consequences of our actions, and the importance of conservation is crucial. Education empowers individuals to make informed choices and encourages sustainable practices at both personal and community levels.

Why is a Clean Environment Necessary?

To have a happy and thriving community and country, we really need a clean and safe environment. It's like the basic necessity for life on Earth. Let me break down why having a clean environment is so crucial.

First off, any living thing—whether it's plants, animals, or people—can't survive in a dirty environment. We all need a good and healthy place to live. When things get polluted, it messes up the balance of nature and can even cause diseases. If we keep using up our natural resources too quickly, life on Earth becomes a real struggle.

So, what's causing all this environmental trouble? Well, one big reason is that there are just so many people around, and we're using up a lot of stuff like land, food, water, air, and even fossil fuels and minerals. Cutting down a bunch of trees (we call it deforestation) is also a big problem because it messes up the whole ecosystem.

Then there's pollution—air, water, and soil pollution. It's like throwing a wrench into the gears of nature, making everything go wonky. And you've probably heard about things like the ozone layer getting thinner, global warming, weird weather, and glaciers melting. These are all signs that our environment is in trouble.

But don't worry, we can do things to make it better:

Plant more trees—they're like nature's superheroes, helping balance everything out.

Follow the 3 R's: Reuse stuff, reduce waste, and recycle. It's like giving our planet a high-five.

Ditch the plastic bags—they're not great for our landscapes.

Think about how many people there are and try to slow down the population growth.

By doing these things, we're basically giving our planet a little TLC (tender loving care), and that's how we can keep our environment clean and healthy for everyone.

Policy and Regulation:

Governments and institutions play a vital role in shaping environmental policies and regulations. Strong and enforceable laws are essential to curb activities that harm the environment. This includes regulations on emissions, waste disposal, and protection of natural habitats. International cooperation is also crucial to address global environmental challenges, as issues like climate change know no borders.

The Role of Technology:

Technology can be a double-edged sword in environmental conservation. While some technological advancements contribute to environmental degradation, others offer solutions. Innovative technologies in renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable agriculture can significantly reduce our impact on the environment. Embracing and investing in eco-friendly technologies is a step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Conclusion:

Our environment is not just a collection of trees, rivers, and animals; it's the foundation of our existence. Understanding the interconnectedness of all living things and recognizing our responsibility as stewards of the Earth is essential. By adopting sustainable practices, fostering education and awareness, implementing effective policies, and embracing eco-friendly technologies, we can work towards healing our planet. The choices we make today will determine the world we leave for future generations – a world that can either flourish in its natural beauty or struggle under the weight of environmental degradation. It's our collective responsibility to ensure that it's the former.

Essay on Importance Of Caring For Environment

Students are often asked to write an essay on Importance Of Caring For Environment in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Importance Of Caring For Environment

Why the environment matters.

The environment is our home. It gives us air, water, food, and everything we need to live. Keeping it clean and safe is important for our health and for animals and plants too. If we don’t take care of it, the air can become dirty, the water poisoned, and the land filled with trash.

Our Role in Protecting Nature

Every person can help the environment. Simple acts like recycling, saving water, and planting trees make a big difference. When we protect nature, we make sure that we have a beautiful world to live in, now and in the future.

What Happens if We Don’t Care

If we ignore the environment, many bad things can happen. Animals could die out, forests might disappear, and the weather can get very extreme. This would make life hard for everyone. So, it’s really important to act now to keep our planet healthy.

250 Words Essay on Importance Of Caring For Environment

Our environment is like our home. Just like we keep our houses clean, we need to keep our environment clean too. When we take care of the environment, we make sure the air is fresh, the water is clean, and the land is free from too much trash. This is important because we need clean air to breathe, water to drink, and safe places to live and play.

Animals and Plants Need a Healthy Environment

What happens if we don’t care.

If we don’t look after the environment, bad things can happen. The air can become dirty, making it hard for us to breathe. Our rivers and oceans can get filled with trash, hurting the fish and other creatures that live there. Also, if we use too many resources, like cutting down too many trees, there might not be enough left for future kids.

How We Can Help

We can do simple things to help the environment. Turning off lights when we leave a room saves energy. Walking or biking instead of asking for a car ride reduces pollution. Recycling things like paper and plastic means less trash hurting the Earth. When we do these things, we show that we care about our planet.

Caring for the environment is very important. It keeps our world safe and clean for us, animals, and plants. It’s up to us to make sure our Earth stays a happy and healthy place for everyone.

500 Words Essay on Importance Of Caring For Environment

The world we live in is full of wonderful things: tall mountains, deep oceans, and forests full of animals and plants. But did you know that taking care of our planet is important for us and all living things? Just like we keep our rooms clean, we need to keep our environment clean too.

Our Health Depends on a Clean Environment

Breathing fresh air, drinking clean water, and eating healthy food all come from our environment. If we pollute the air with smoke or the water with chemicals, it can make us sick. Plants and animals also need a clean place to live. If we take care of the Earth, it takes care of us by giving us what we need to stay healthy.

Protecting Our Friends in Nature

Keeping the earth beautiful for everyone.

Parks, beaches, and forests are places where we can play and relax. If we leave trash everywhere or harm plants and trees, these places won’t be nice to visit. By keeping them clean, we make sure that everyone can enjoy them, even people who will be born many years from now.

Using Resources Wisely

The Earth gives us many things like water, wood, and oil. But if we use too much, there might not be enough left for other people or for us when we get older. By saving these resources and using them carefully, we make sure there’s enough for the future. For example, turning off the lights when we leave a room saves electricity, and recycling paper means we don’t have to cut down as many trees.

There are many easy things we can do to help the environment. Walking or riding a bike instead of asking for a car ride reduces air pollution. Turning off the tap while brushing teeth saves water. And throwing trash in the bin keeps our neighborhoods clean.

Taking care of the environment is important for our health, for the animals and plants, for beautiful places, and for using Earth’s gifts wisely. Even small actions can make a big difference. So let’s all do our part to keep the Earth a happy and healthy home for everyone.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Happy studying!

Our Environment Essay

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year. All living and nonliving things represent the environment on Earth. Our environment is home to various living things, including plants, animals, water, and air. Climate interaction, geomorphic changes, and hydrologic changes all affect our environment. Climate has a direct impact on both human and animal existence. Here are a few sample essays on "our environment".

Our Environment Essay

100 Words Essay On Our Environment

Earth, our planet, supports our natural environment and nourishes life as we know it. The existence of life on Earth depends significantly on the natural environment, which also supports the growth and development of humans, animals, and other living things. But our environment is being impacted by certain negative and selfish human behaviours and activities. Everyone must understand how to preserve the environment and maintain the ecological balance necessary for life to exist on this planet. To lead a peaceful and healthy life, a clean environment is essential. But due to some human negligence, our ecosystem is becoming more polluted.

200 Words Essay On Our Environment

The term "environment" refers to the setting in which we interact, exist, and breathe. It is one of the fundamental necessities for all living organisms. The term "environment" refers to both biotic and abiotic that are present around us. It supplies essentials, including air, water, food, and land, which are crucial for human health.

A clean and safe environment is crucial for a flourishing community and the country as a whole. It is one of the fundamental prerequisites for life on earth. The importance of a clean environment is needed because humans, animals, plants, and any other living thing cannot exist in a poisoned environment.

For survival, every living thing requires a safe and favourable habitat. A dirty environment promotes different diseases and an unbalanced ecosystem. Life is particularly challenging because of the depletion of natural resources.

As a result of increased air, noise, and environmental pollution, as well as deforestation, acid rain, water pollution, soil pollution, and other harmful natural disasters, the environment is becoming polluted and unlivable. A large amount of pollution and climate change is negatively impacting our environment. To ensure that our natural environment remains as safe as usual forever, we must collectively pledge to defend it.

500 Words Essay On Our Environment

The natural components that support life on earth include water, air, sunlight, land, fire, forests, animals, and plants. The only planet in the universe that has the conditions necessary for life to exist is Earth. We cannot predict the existence of life in our world without a healthy environment. Thus we should preserve it for future generations. Every person who lives anywhere on the planet is accountable for it. Everyone should step forward and join the effort to protect the environment.

Environmental Components

The following are components of the environment:

Biotic Components | All living things, such as plants, animals, and bacteria, are considered to be biotic components.

Abiotic Components | These are non-living elements like soil, minerals, temperature, light, and rainfall. It is made up of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere.

Advantages Of Environment

For thousands of years, the environment has supported the growth and well-being of people, animals, and plants.

It contributes to preserving the natural equilibrium.

It satisfies every requirement a person might have, including food, shelter, and air.

Environmental factors control daily natural cycles. These organic cycles maintain equilibrium between the environment and all living beings.

Additionally, it gives us access to water, animals, air, and other necessities for living and fertile land.

Reasons for Environmental Problems

One of the main reasons for environmental deterioration is the quick rise of the human population.

Over-consumption of natural resources such as minerals, fossil fuels, food, water, and land.

Another significant issue that is damaging the ecology as a whole is deforestation.

The entire ecosystem is negatively impacted by environmental pollution, such as that in the air, water, and soil.

The other causes are:

Most people damage the environment, making human activity the leading cause of environmental degradation.

Pollution, poor environmental regulations, chemicals, greenhouse gases, global warming, ozone depletion, and other human activities are responsible for ecological degradation.

The demand for environmental resources has increased because of the industrial revolution and the population boom, while their quantity has decreased because of overuse and abuse.

The extensive and intensive use of renewable and non-renewable resources has depleted several essential resources. The depletion of resources and the exponential growth in people harm our ecosystem.

Measures To Protect The Environment

With every individual on the planet taking just one small step, we can easily rescue the earth.

We should reduce the amount of waste by properly disposing of garbage only in their designated locations.

Ceasing the use of poly bags, reusing some old items in novel ways, repairing and using broken items instead of tossing them away, estimating the cost of repairs, using rechargeable batteries or renewable alkaline batteries, using fluorescent lighting, utilising rainwater collection to reduce water waste, minimising the use of electricity, etc.

My Contribution To Saving The Environment

Every Vanmahotsav, our college's club invites us to plant something in the college garden and to make a promise to protect trees by refusing to allow them to be cut down in the neighbourhood. The college has about 2500 students, and on that day, everyone plants a tree or shrub in the garden. I planted the rose and lily plant in my home after becoming aware of the importance of protecting the environment. I participated in environmental awareness campaigns at my college.

People must act responsibly and with consideration for the environment to preserve a healthy and balanced ecosystem. We rely on the food web or food chain produced by environmental elements. The survival of life on this planet depends on us taking care of our environment.

How to Write an Essay on the Environment

The environment where we live affects how we function and socialize as human beings. Over the years, there has been a growing focus on climate change and how shifts in weather events and temperatures are affecting living organisms.

Of course, although climate change is one of the threatening and pervasive things, currently, there are many other areas one can write about including biodiversity and pollution. Choosing what to write about is just one aspect of creating a good essay on the environment.

When tasked with writing an assignment on the environment, there are some specific factors to consider. Of course, different instructors issue different guidelines for academic writing, including the format and citation style to use. Make sure to adhere to these and stick to the question as outlined in the assignment prompt. Here are additional tips for effective essay writing.

Essay on the environment

Start by Choosing a Good Topic

The most important step in effective academic writing is selecting an appropriate topic. There are many areas of the environment where you can base your writing. However, you have to make sure that your preferred topic is in line with your assignment question, as set out in the prompt. Of course, there are times when instructors provide specific topics for their students, eliminating the need for topic selection.

In other instances, students are accorded the freedom to create their own topics. With such freedom, comes the responsibility of making sure that your topic is relevant for your project and current. Also, you have to make sure that your area of writing is precise enough to be covered within the scope of your essay. Those who are unable to find good topics can seek  custom writing  from professionals online.

Your essay on the environment can be in any of the following areas:• Climate change or global warming and its impacts;• Biodiversity;• Environmental pollution and how it affects living organisms.

Since the environment is a very broad topic area, you will need to conduct some research to make sure that you pick a relevant and current topic. Also, make sure to  narrow down your topic .

Brainstorm for Ideas and Create a Plan

love our environment essay

Once you have a topic for your essay, the next step is brainstorming. This is the process of thinking about the topic and noting down everything you know. The notes created here can form part of your outline.

When it comes to outlining, having a good plan will save you time much later in the course of your research and writing. This stage may require some preliminary research as well as the creation of a working thesis statement.

Create an Interesting Thesis Statement

Now that you have a topic and an outline, it is time to create a working thesis. Please note that your statement may change several in the course of your research and writing. As you proceed with your work, you may encounter different ideas and change your perspective on important issues. In essence, your thesis should be clear, arguable, interesting, and simple. It should demonstrate the position you intend to take with your argumentation.

Conduct Research and Document Sources

It is impossible to write a good essay on the environment if you don’t gather enough data and evidence. Quality academic papers present coherent arguments where ideas and points are supported using credible evidence. Conduct research on books, electronic journals, reputable websites, and primary sources. Just make sure to document the sources of your information to help with citations and references. Most importantly,  take keen notes that will make organizing  your essay easier.

Start Writing as Soon as Possible

Do not spend so much time with preparations that you forget to make time for the actual writing. You may have heard that freewriting is the easiest way to overcome writer’s block. However, there is an even better way — writing from an outline and researching the various sections of your paper. Just make sure to give each main idea its own paragraph, supported using evidence and examples from credible sources.

As you write your paper, grammar and syntax should not be your main priority. At this stage, just work on the drafting of your ideas and points. You can finish by editing your work for grammatical, content, and formatting consistency.

Please note that the tips provided in this article are meant to guide you through the process of academic essay writing. You still have to make sure that your writing adheres to your assignment instructions. Most importantly, you need to ensure that you proofread and edit your work.

Similarly, people must give attention to forest conservation. Forests are vital for the Environment. However, deforestation certainly reduces the area of forests around the World. The government must launch programs to conserve the forests. The government must make harming forests a criminal offense.

Soil conservation is yet another important way to save the Environment. For this, there must be control of landslides, floods, and soil erosion . Furthermore, there should also be afforestation and tree plantation to conserve the soil. Also, terrace farming and using natural fertilizers are some more ways.

Waste management is a powerful way of protecting the environment. There must be proper disposal of wastes. Most noteworthy, this would help to keep the surroundings healthy. The government must ensure to clean the streets and other polluted land areas. Furthermore, there should be toilets in every house. Also, the government must provide enough public toilets.

Pollution is probably the biggest danger to the Environment. Smoke, dust, and harmful gases cause air pollution. These causes of air pollution come from industries and vehicles mostly. Furthermore, Chemicals and pesticides cause land and water pollution.

Essay on Save Environment

Essay writing is an important part of the school curriculum, competitive exams like GRE , IELTS , TOEFL , etc. and higher education as well. One must know how to precisely select arguments, collect the data based on them and put it all together in their write-up. Usually, the essay topics given to students are based on the latest political, social and environmental issues. Due to the changes occurring in our surroundings, essays based on saving the Environment are becoming very popular. Keeping that in mind, this blog presents you some sample essays on Save Environment.

Sample Essay 1 on Save Environment

In the 21st century, environmental concern has sent shockwaves to the world leaders and people living on the planet. The unprecedented climate changes and natural calamities have become a major global pandemic of contemporary times. The superpowers of the world are boasting high on their technological innovations, but they seem helpless in tackling environmental affairs efficiently.

The environment constitutes the soil, trees, animals, flora and fauna. It comprises plants, air, water, sunlight and the dynamism in eco-system.  We cannot imagine living on this planet earth without environmental sustainability. There is a dire need of saving the environment, especially when the humungous urbanisation activities are taking place. Trees are being cut down mercilessly and the concentration of toxic gases are poisoning the planet. The heavy presence of Methane gases, as well as Cholorofloro Carbons, have massively lead to the depletion of Ozone Layer, which resulted in Acid rain and Skin Cancer in many areas on the planet.

At such crucial juncture, the inspirational speech of Greta Thunberg on Save Environment and other environmental activists should be taken into utmost consideration. There is a dire need for saving the environment & be protagonists for sustainable development in order to do away with the natural calamities.

This essay on save environment can help you in the PTE Writing Essay, TOEFL Essay Topics and TOEFL Sample Essays !

Sample Essay 2

As human beings, we exist because of environmental support. Had there be no air, no freshwater, no other natural resources, our existence would have been impossible. It is because of innumerable trees around us, we are able to breath fresh air. We eat when the process of photosynthesis takes place in plants. We are living comfortably in our habitats when there the food chain in the ecosystem is properly maintained.

Whenever there is any ecological disturbance, be it rise of harmful gases in the environment rise of earth’s temperature due to global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, glacier melting, unprecedented climatic changes, extreme air pollution, and water pollution are taking a heavy toll on human lives and certainly, this is the creation of anthropogenic approach.

Delhi is the best example of poor air quality that engulfed the capital city last year. It happened due to the presence of toxic gases emitting from industrial units and countless vehicles. The poor air quality has forced to change the vehicular movement strategy which resulted in massive human sufferings and hardships.

We have so many examples from the northernmost belt of India, where the massive soil erosion is washing away residential areas away in a harsh deluge. Such conditions arise when trees are being uprooted mercilessly.

There is a dire need to embrace the concept of ‘Sustainable Development’ that talks about the judicious usage of natural resources. It is the time when we have to Save Environment from further degradation. It is the time when human beings have to utilise their collective consciousness towards environmental sustainability and refrain using those resources and products which causes environmental degradation

Sample Essay 3 on Save Environment

We have mesmerizing landscapes and breathtaking water bodies which constitute a great contribution to fresh air and houses various species of animals and aquatic life. But, the unfortunate part is the rise of humungous plastic pollutions which lead to a disastrous impact on environmental change. Other than a climatic change, plastic pollution posing a massive threat to the environment, it is affecting not only the quality of soil but affecting the aquatic life as well.

It would grow more alarmingly if concrete steps are not being taken at the right time; it is sure that we may lose water bodies at a vast scale.

Same is the case with the excessive usage of Carbon gases in the environment which is causing the depletion of the Ozone layer in the Stratosphere. Joseph Farman first time discovered the ozone depletion over the South Pole. Its depletion has caused acid rains in many parts of the globe as well as skin diseases.

Another level of environmental degradation is taking place when a large chunk of trees are being cut. Humans not only cut down the vast land of the forest for the construction of houses but destroy the natural habitat of wildlife. When the wildlife is losing their dwelling places, they migrate to human settlements areas, causing a heavy imbalance in the food chain, ecosystem and insecurity for human beings. The massive rise of deforestation has caused floods to enter into human settlements, causing loss of precious lives and property.

Now that the environmental issues are buzzing at the international forums, many awareness programs are being conducted to keep people updated about the repercussions of environmental exploitation. A number of campaigns are being launched to spread the message of Saving Environment.

It is a need of the hour to the hour to protect the environment, come what may otherwise face the brutal repercussions.

The environment includes the backdrop of our living space, comprising the air, water, soil, plants, and animals. It is a complex web of interconnected ecosystems that support life on Earth. 5 reasons why you should love Earth

Get the dirt on our planet and what makes it so awesome.

The planet is one big party.

Earth is the only planet in our galaxy that can support life. Scientists estimate that Earth is home to about 300,000 plant species, over 600,000 species of fungi, and about ten million animal species. Guess you could say we’re the life of the party.

Earth has a superpower—it sports an invisible shield.

Earth is surrounded by a cloud of gas called the plasmasphere. This cloud interacts with rings of particles that also surround the planet to create an invisible shield. The “armor” deflects superfast electrons that zip through space and could harm Earth if they were able to enter the atmosphere.

This planet is into recycling.

The ground you walk on is recycled. It starts off as sizzling-hot magma deep within the planet’s core. This is pushed up to the surface, where it cools and becomes hard rock. Winds erode the rock , shaving off tiny fragments that get buried back into the earth, where they’re reheated into magma. Then the cycle starts again. Good to know Earth is so green.

Earth is in the perfect position.

Earth spins around a tilted axis, or an imaginary line that runs through the planet from the South Pole to the North Pole . If the planet were angled any differently, or if Earth were even just a little closer to or farther from the sun, temperatures would shift drastically. And that would make life here impossible.

Our planet is a mystery.

About 95 percent of the Earth’s oceans (which make up more than 70 percent of the planet) remain unexplored. Scientists estimate almost a million undiscovered species could live in these unseen seas. Some lands, like parts of the rain forests in New Guinea, are also uncharted. This means that many things on Earth have yet to be discovered.

For millions of years, nature provides us everything to live a better life and start from clothes, food, light, air, and furniture to beautiful landscapes, waterfalls, and forests. The ecosystem helps us with agriculture and grow crops and vegetables. Our waste products were absorbed and decomposed as compost for agriculture. Humans were served by the environment in several ways and are still using nature for various personal uses.

Today the pressure of high population and so many people are taking a toll on nature and creating a lot of stress. The entire system of living beings around the Globe is collapsing. Our planet’s biosystem, which consists of both the chemical and physical environment, is constantly changing, causing our world to deplete gradually. Earlier, humans could not cause much damage the environment, and if they did, it was on a small area of land. However, today the human population is constantly increasing with various technological advancements, automobiles, and more. Today, the environment is about farm fields and agriculture, but it consists of the entire planet. They are thus resulting in a complete disruption and misbalance in our ecosystem. Without realizing the long term consequences, modern people are still continuously using different means of hazardous elements that adversely affect our nature.

Over the years, people were concerned about their health, living conditions, various diseases, pandemics, famines, accidents, and vector borne diseases. The farming and domesticating animals formed new contagious disorders among people, creating new challenges for better health among people.

With the advancement of technologies and the development of industries, various water-borne and other diseases were prevented. However, it adversely affects the environment by using harmful gases, chemicals, and building wastes. The trade and commerce, industries, and other factories paved the way for humans to leave the agricultural field and step into the technological world. The air, water, and soil pollution is affecting the environment, and it is damaging rapidly. Harmful greenhouse gases are causing the greenhouse effect. The protective ozone layer is depleting, causing the sun’s direct ultra-violet rays to enter the Earth and cause the snow to melt and produce serious skin diseases infections among animals and humans.

Ecology is the study of plants and animals and how they work together to balance nature. Humans must be responsible and use nature efficiently and only to survive for causing less damage. Various animals are going into extinction because of lack of trees, increased pollution, use of electronic gadgets and waves. The birds that once migrated to the urban areas from the rural districts were now seen nowhere because of the harmful emissions from the industries and the electronic waves through mobile phones and internet connections. This imbalance of nature is causing serious complications and danger for a long-lasting life on Earth.

The environment Essay is an important part of our life, without which the living things couldn’t survive on Earth. However, several issues are disrupting the ecosystem of the environment and causing damage to living beings. The main reason behind such a condition was that humans misused nature and the technology that they settled their lifestyle. Greenhouse effect, global warming, pollution, and various other harmful toxic wastes from industries are the side effects of nature damage. Humans’ everyday activities like washing clothes using chemical detergents, using chemicals like fertilizers, and using colors in vegetables are degrading environmental quality.

There are various reasons behind the decline of our environment. However, some of the issues are causing serious complications in our ecosystem, resulting in a threat to life and the ecosystem. Pollution is one of the major causes that affect the soil, air, and water, degrading the quality of nature. In the past few decades, industries’ formation has led to the use and emission of harmful chemicals, gases, and compounds dumped in the river or waterfronts or thrown on the soil. The use of plastics is detrimental to our nature, as it doesn’t decompose in the ground. The poisonous gases that are left in the air cause serious breathing problems and even death. Various such cases of mass death have occurred previously in places like Bhopal and Chernobyl, which has caused death and serious health complications in common people living in the surrounding areas.

Greenhouse gases are another major factor responsible for destroying the ecosystem of our environment. These gases are responsible for increasing the temperature. With the growing number of vehicles on the road every year, greenhouse gas release is constantly growing, causing serious temperature changes on our planet. However, various precautions are planned by the government to reduce the number of use of vehicles. However, to completely incorporate the laws might still take several years. The excessive emission of harmful gases is a direct result of changing climate. Every day, acid rains, smog are becoming a common phenomenon. In the few years, natural calamities like drought, earthquakes, famines, floods, landslides, and heavy snowfall are increasing rapidly and disturbing nature’s free flow. Human beings’ need for a better life and luxury is constantly growing, thereby hampering our ecosystem.

Various ways can help to resolve the issues of environmental damage. However, an individual can’t make a change. It might take years and millions of people to make a change. There are few ways to save the environment easily and various animals on our planet. Reforestation helps restore nature’s natural flow and balance the ecosystem. The underground water is often disturbed by deforestation or cutting down excessive trees; therefore, maintaining the groundwater recharge works well with Reforestation. Plants take in carbon dioxide, which helps to reduce the number of greenhouse gases in the air. The best way to care for the environment is to follow the principle of three R. Reducing plastics, reusing the plastic products until it is entirely damaged and recycling the damaged plastics, are the best way to save our environment. Reuse, reduce, and recycle are practiced in various schools and localities to keep our nature safe.

The inhalation of toxic air is impacting the health of animals, humans, and other living beings. Today, humans are leading a fast life, making it impossible for people to make efforts to bring a change. It is important to keep the environment safe and clean by following some rules. We can get water, air and pure greenery with a better and healthy atmosphere. Children can stay happy and safe living in a healthy surrounding. Children learn to keep their house and surroundings clean when they grow up in a hygienic environment.

Today, various laws are made by the government to decrease noise pollution. Many companies are building eco-friendly vehicles to reduce air pollution. The use of polythene and plastics is banned in various malls. Throwing wastes on the road is a felony in many countries. People must make it a habit to repair the broken items and reuse them. Fluorescent lights or alkaline lights are best to use by replacing the battery lights. Many houses use solar panels for electricity. To maintain a better environment, less waste of water, low electricity consumption, rainwater harvesting, Reforestation is some of the best ideas to adopt.

Importance of Environment Essay Conclusion

The environment is very important for all living things, including humans. It harms all human activities and health. The new technologies every day has made human life comfortable. 12 Ways to Love Our Planet

Show Mother Earth some love with these simple ideas.

Mother Earth has had a bit of a rough time of late – her oceans are awash with single use plastic,  wildlife populations are declining at an unprecedented rate , and we have less than  12 years to limit irreversible climate change catastrophe .

So that’s why we think that the planet deserves to be shown a bit of love and kindness!  Even these small changes can help to make a difference, and hopefully they can be the start of new conscious habits and practices beyond February 14th.

Here are some simple ways to spread the love:

love our environment essay

1. Volunteer your time to help clean things up  Litter not only makes our paths, parks and beaches look untidy, it also causes harm to wildlife and the environment – with plastic waste in particular sticking around for years. Help to keep the planet clean by volunteering your time to take part in an organised  beach  or  river clean .

You can even clean the waterways of London while stand-up paddle boarding or canoeing – see  Paddle & Pick  or  Plastic Patrol .

If you don’t want to join an organised clean, why not simply take it upon yourself to pick up some litter on your local, beach, or even as you go about your day?  Combine with some exercise by going plogging – the Swedish craze for litter picking while jogging. 2. Dress more consciously The world’s addiction to fast fashion devastates wildlife and communities around the world – from the pollution caused by intensive cotton farming on people and the planet (remember the dried up Aral Sea in  Stacey Dooley Investigates:  Fashion’s Dirty Secrets ?); to the water used in production of clothes and the  hidden plastics  released during clothes washing, which make their way back to the sea and into the food chain – the clothes we buy and wear can have a big impact on the world. To help reduce this impact, choose natural, organic fibres as much as possible and buy clothes that you really love and will keep wearing beyond #30wears from ethical brands. Read our simple tips on  how to adopt a new, more sustainable way to dress .  3. Give up single use plastic  … or at least reduce it.   Documentaries  such as  Blue Planet II  and  Drowning in Plastic  have highlighted the vast extent of the plastic crisis and the devastating impact single use plastic is having on  ocean wildlife.    There are many simple swaps you can make at home to reduce the amount of  plastic you buy and discard, from carrying a reusable water bottle to buying food in bulk. See Melissa Hemsley’s guide to 1 0 simple swaps to cut down on plastic  and our  plastic free beauty swaps .

love our environment essay

4. Plant a tree Trees help to clean our air, filter our drinking water, purify our soil and provide habitat to over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. Forests also  provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people  worldwide and provide key medicinal ingredients.

But trees are under threat from climate change, urban development, pollution and attack from tree diseases and pests.

So why not help the planet this Valentine’s Day by planting a tree? You can do this by yourself in your back garden, or  joining a  National Forest planting event . You can also donate to reforestation projects around the world – see  onetreeplanted.org  and support the Woodland Trust  to help protect trees and woodland. 5. Eat seasonal & local produce Eating seasonal, local produce helps to reduce the environmental footprint of your food, using less energy (and associated CO2 emissions) for growing and transportation. It also helps to supports the local economy and, as seasonal fruit and vegetables are picked at their natural taste and nutritional peak, quite often tastes better too. Read our guide to eating seasonally   6. Reduce your meat intake Research  has found that food production is a major driver of climate change and environmental damage, thanks to greenhouse gases from livestock, agricultural pollution,  deforestation  to make way for livestock and  water shortages  caused by farming.  As the world population rises by 2.3 billion people by 2050, these environmental impacts only look set to worsen.  Last October,  scientists warned  that to ward off dangerous climate change, we need to  eat less meat  and replace it with more plant-based foods such as beans and pulses, particularly in nations like the UK & US, where beef consumption needs to be reduced by 90%. Having at least one meat-free day a week, or a meat-free meal every day can help to make a big difference.  See  Meat Free Mondays  or  One Meal a Day for the Planet  for tips and ideas. 7. Help to save the bees The global bee population is in trouble, and that means we’re in trouble too. Wild and domestic honey bees perform about  80% of all pollination worldwide , including 70 of the top 100 human food crops supplying 90% of the world’s nutrition.

Bee numbers are in serious decline. In the UK, we have already lost around  13 species of bees  and another 35 are under threat of extinction.  This decline in bees’ diversity and abundance would have serious consequences on how our natural world functions. Bee  decline is caused by  a number of factors  including drought, habitat destruction, air pollution, global warming – but the biggest cause is the intensification of farming and the use increased use of pesticides. Help to save the bees this Valentine’s Day by planting some bee friendly plants, such as wildflowers, in your very own bee garden to create a habitat corridor for bees. Create a  bee hotel  where solitary bees can nest, and  create a bee bath  out of a small dish or bowl filled with clean water and some pebbles poking out that bees can rest on to take a drink.

For more ideas,  order a bee saver kit  from Friends of the Earth.

8. Conserve energy Simple changes at home, such switching the lights off when you leave the room and replacing your lightbulbs with low energy LED lights can help to conserve energy in the home.  Not only does this help to reduce your household bills, but there’s also a direct correlation between your energy use and the environment.  Consuming less power at home helps to reduce power plant emissions that are emitted when generating electricity, and also helps conserve the earth’s natural resources.

A few ideas for how to conserve energy:

  • Turn the lights out when you leave a phone
  • Don’t leave appliances on standby – switch them off
  • Open windows instead of using an extractor fan when cooking or showering
  • Pack your freezer and defrost frozen items in the fridge
  • Switch to low energy LED lightbulbs – they use 90% less energy and last a lot longer than regular bulbs
  • Hang wet clothes out to dry rather than using a dryer

Additionally, consider switching to a green energy supplier. There are an increasing number of energy suppliers including Ecotricity, Good Energy, Bulb and Ovo, offering 100% renewable electricity generated from wind turbines, solar panels, and hydro, plus green gas produced by breaking down organic matter such as manure and sewage.

9. Forgo the car as much as possible Opt to walk, cycle or use public transport as much as possible to reduce CO2 emissions caused by driving and taking taxis. Of course, this might be easier in big cities where there are more public transport options available and there will always be occasions where you do need to take a car.  Car sharing is a great way to reduce the number of vehicles making the same journey.

10. Save water Conserve water resources by making simple changes at home such as turning the tap off when brushing your teeth, taking a shower rather than a bath (which use approximately double the amount of water a shower uses) and shortening your aforementioned shower time.  Check with your water supplier to see if they offer any water saving devices. Thames Water , for example, offer freebies such as showerheads, to save-a-flush devices and inserts for your tap to not only reduce your water bills, but also to lower energy bills from heating less water.

love our environment essay

11. Go paperless Cancel paper bank statements and bills and opt to pay online instead. Not only does this save trees and energy, but it also means you have less waste to get rid of and is much more convenient.  12. Adopt an endangered animal Adopt an endangered animal and support the vital work of conservation and wildlife charities that are working to protect species around the world. From elephants, lions, giraffes, to more local wildlife such as badgers, owls and hares, your sponsorship will help to raise money for protecting and creating habitats, fund projects to work with local communities to educate, support and address human-animal conflict, and provide care for rescued animals. When you adopt an animal, you’ll usually receive an adoption certificate and regular updates on the work being done – making this a great gift idea too. A few ideas for where to adopt from: Born Free Foundation The Wildlife Trusts WWF Durrell Galapagos Conservation Trust

An environment is called healthy environment when natural cycle goes side by side without any disturbance. Any type of disturbance in the nature’s balance affects the environment totally which ruins the human lives.

Now, in the era of advance living standard of the human being, our environment is getting affected to a great extent by the means of air pollution, noise pollution, deforestation, water pollution, soil pollution, acid rain and other dangerous disasters created by the human beings through technological advancement. We all must take an oath together to protect our natural environment to keep it safe as usual forever.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Executive branch agencies will likely have more difficulty regulating the environment, public health, workplace safety and other issues under a far-reaching decision by the Supreme Court .

The court’s 6-3 ruling on Friday overturned a 1984 decision colloquially known as Chevron that has instructed lower courts to defer to federal agencies when laws passed by Congress are not crystal clear.

The 40-year-old decision has been the basis for upholding thousands of regulations by dozens of federal agencies, but has long been a target of conservatives and business groups who argue that it grants too much power to the executive branch, or what some critics call the administrative state.

The Biden administration has defended the law, warning that overturning so-called Chevron deference would be destabilizing and could bring a “convulsive shock” to the nation’s legal system.

Image

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the court, said federal judges “must exercise their independent judgment in deciding whether an agency has acted within its statutory authority.”

The ruling does not call into question prior cases that relied on the Chevron doctrine, Roberts wrote.

Here is a look at the court’s decision and the implications for government regulations going forward.

What is the Chevron decision?

Atlantic herring fishermen sued over federal rules requiring them to pay for independent observers to monitor their catch. The fishermen argued that the 1976 Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act did not authorize officials to create industry-funded monitoring requirements and that the National Marine Fisheries Service failed to follow proper rulemaking procedure.

In two related cases, the fishermen asked the court to overturn the 40-year-old Chevron doctrine, which stems from a unanimous Supreme Court case involving the energy giant in a dispute over the Clean Air Act. That ruling said judges should defer to the executive branch when laws passed by Congress are ambiguous.

In that case, the court upheld an action by the Environmental Protection Agency under then-President Ronald Reagan.

In the decades following the ruling, Chevron has been a bedrock of modern administrative law, requiring judges to defer to agencies’ reasonable interpretations of congressional statutes.

But the current high court, with a 6-3 conservative majority has been increasingly skeptical of the powers of federal agencies. Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch have questioned the Chevron decision. Ironically, it was Gorsuch’s mother, former EPA Administrator Anne Gorsuch, who made the decision that the Supreme Court upheld in 1984.

Image

What’s at stake?

With a closely divided Congress, presidential administrations have increasingly turned to federal regulation to implement policy changes. Federal rules impact virtually every aspect of everyday life, from the food we eat and the cars we drive to the air we breathe and homes we live in.

President Joe Biden’s administration, for example, has issued a host of new regulations on the environment and other priorities, including restrictions on emissions from power plants and vehicle tailpipes , and rules on student loan forgiveness , overtime pay and affordable housing.

Those actions and others could be opened up to legal challenges if judges are allowed to discount or disregard the expertise of the executive-branch agencies that put them into place.

With billions of dollars potentially at stake, groups representing the gun industry and other businesses such as tobacco, agriculture, timber and homebuilding, were among those pressing the justices to overturn the Chevron doctrine and weaken government regulation.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce filed an amicus brief last year on behalf of business groups arguing that modern application of Chevron has “fostered aggrandizement’’ of the executive branch at the expense of Congress and the courts.

David Doniger, a lawyer and longtime Natural Resources Defense Council official who argued the original Chevron case in 1984, said he feared that a ruling to overturn the doctrine could “free judges to be radical activists” who could “effectively rewrite our laws and block the protections they are supposed to provide.”

“The net effect will be to weaken our government’s ability to meet the real problems the world is throwing at us — big things like COVID and climate change,″ Doniger said.

More than just fish

“This case was never just about fish,’' said Meredith Moore of the environmental group Ocean Conservancy. Instead, businesses and other interest groups used the herring fishery “to attack the foundations of the public agencies that serve the American public and conserve our natural resources,’' she said.

The court ruling will likely open the floodgates to litigation that could erode critical protections for people and the environment, Moore and other advocates said.

“For more than 30 years, fishery observers have successfully helped ensure that our oceans are responsibly managed so that fishing can continue in the future,’' said Dustin Cranor of Oceana, another conservation group.

He called the case “just the latest example of the far right trying to undermine the federal government’s ability to protect our oceans, waters, public lands, clean air and health.’'

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey called the decision a fitting follow-up to a 2022 decision — in a case he brought — that limits the EPA’s ability to control greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. The court held that Congress must speak with specificity when it wants to give an agency authority to regulate on an issue of major national significance.

Morrisey, now the GOP nominee for governor, called Chevron “a misguided doctrine under which courts defer to legally dubious interpretations of statutes put out by federal administrative agencies.”

A shift toward judicial power

The Supreme Court ruling will almost certainly shift power away from the executive branch and Congress and toward courts, said Craig Green, a professor at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law.

“Federal judges will now have the first and final word about what statutes mean,″ he said. “That’s a big shift in power.″

In what some observers see as a historic irony, many conservatives who now attack Chevron once celebrated it. The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was among those who hailed the original ruling as a way to rein in liberal laws.

“Conservatives believed in this rule until they didn’t,’' Green said in an interview.

In recent years, conservatives have focused on “deconstruction of the administrative state,’' even if the result lessens the ability of a conservative president to impose his beliefs on government agencies.

“If you weaken the federal government, you get less government,’' Green said — an outcome that many conservatives, including those who back former President Donald Trump, welcome.

The ruling will likely “gum up the works for federal agencies and make it even harder for them to address big problems. Which is precisely what the critics of Chevron want,” said Jody Freeman, director of the environmental and energy law program at Harvard Law School.

Spring 2024 was unnerving for people across large parts of the U.S. as tornado warnings and sirens sent them scrambling for safety.

More than 1,100 tornadoes were reported through May − a preliminary number but nearly twice the 30-year average at that point and behind only 2011 , when deadly tornado outbreaks tore across the southeastern U.S.

The U.S. experienced several multistate outbreaks in 2024. Tornadoes damaged homes from Texas to Minnesota and east to West Virginia and Georgia . They caused widespread destruction in several towns, including Greenfield, Iowa ; Westmoreland, Kansas ; and Bartlesville, Oklahoma . Barnsdall, Oklahoma, was hit twice in two months .

In May, at least one tornado occurred somewhere in the country almost every day .

What causes some years to have so many tornadoes? I’m a meteorologist who studies tornadoes and thunderstorms . Here’s what created the perfect conditions for these violent storms.

2 key tornado ingredients, on steroids

The hyperactive season has been due to an abundance of two key ingredients for tornadoes: wind shear and instability.

The jet stream − a band of strong upper-level winds that mostly blows west to east, flowing between warm air to its south and cool air to its north − plays an important role in how and where weather systems evolve, and in wind shear.

During April and May 2024 , the jet stream often dipped southward in the western U.S. before turning back to the northeast across the Plains. That’s a pattern favorable for producing tornadoes in the central U.S.

A US map shows warm moist air rising from the Gulf of Mexico, the jet stream bending northward into the Great Plains, Tornado Alley from Texas to South Dakota and into Iowa, and cold air to the north and warm air to the south.

In the area east of the jet stream’s southern dip, air rises. That creates a strong low-pressure system, which causes winds near the ground to blow from a different direction than winds higher up, contributing to wind shear.

Making this year even more active, persistent record heat waves were common over Mexico and Texas, while the Rockies and far northern United States stayed cool. The sharp temperature difference created a stronger jet stream than normal, leading to strong changes in wind speed with elevation. As a result, wind shear has been on steroids.

The change in wind speed with elevation can cause air to have a rolling motion . The rapidly rising air in a thunderstorm can then tilt the rolling motion to create a spinning thunderstorm that can concentrate the spin into a tornado.

The Gulf of Mexico was also much warmer than normal , producing abundant heat and moisture that could be transported northward to fuel thunderstorms. That creates atmospheric instability , the other key ingredient for tornadoes.

Chart shows 2024 tornado reports well above the 15-year mean and only below 2011. It's just above 2019 numbers.

El Niño’s weakening was a warning

This perfect combination of ingredients for tornadoes wasn’t a complete surprise.

El Niño and La Niña – opposing climate patterns centered in the Pacific Ocean – can affect winds and weather around the world. A 2016 study found that when El Niño is shifting to La Niña , the number of tornadoes in the central Plains and Upper Midwest is often larger than normal.

That’s exactly what was happening in spring 2024 . The tornadoes mostly occurred in the traditional Tornado Alley, from northern Texas to South Dakota, with an extension across the Corn Belt through Iowa and as far east as Ohio, matching the findings of that study.

How is tornado activity changing?

The active spring in the Great Plains was a bit unusual, however. Studies show a long-term trend of decreasing tornado numbers in this region and an increase in tornadoes farther east , near or just east of the Mississippi River.

That shift is consistent with what climate models suggest is likely to happen throughout the remainder of the century as global temperatures rise.

A U.S. map shows the greatest activity over the Southeast, particularly Louisiana and Alabama.

The expected decline in the number of tornadoes in the Plains is likely related to increasing heat over the high ground of the desert Southwest and Mexico. That heat flows over the Great Plains a few thousand feet above ground, creating a cap, or lid. The cap lets heat and moisture build up until it punches through to form a thunderstorm. This hot, moist air is why the central U.S. is home to the most violent tornadoes on Earth.

One theory is that, with climate change, the cap will likely be harder to break through, reducing the number of tornadoes in the Plains. At the same time, increasing heat and moisture elsewhere will fuel more tornadoes in the East.

Long-term trends and climate model predictions also suggest that more tornadoes are occurring during the cooler months , particularly in the Southeast . Tornadoes are also occurring on fewer days each year, but on the days when they do form, there is more likely to be an outbreak with several tornadoes

Republicans Used to Love Wind and Solar. That Romance Has Cooled.

A new Pew Research Center survey finds Republican support for wind, solar and electric vehicles has tanked since President Biden was elected, mostly among those 65 and older.

By Lisa Friedman

Support for wind power and solar energy among Republicans has dropped significantly since 2020, as older Republicans in particular soured on renewable energy sources, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center .

Still, a clear majority of Americans, 63 percent, want the country to stop adding carbon dioxide from the burning of oil, gas and coal to the atmosphere by 2050, the study found. That’s the goal that scientists say all major economies must reach to avoid the most deadly effects from climate change. To that end, 78 percent want more solar energy while 72 percent want more wind power, the survey found.

But that marks a softening in public support for renewable energy, driven by Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, whose approval of clean energy started to fall sharply after President Biden took office in 2021, according to Pew.

In the new survey, 64 percent of Republicans said they favor more solar farms, down from 84 percent the year Mr. Biden was elected. Similarly, 56 percent of Republicans said they support more wind turbine farms, down from 75 percent in 2020. Over the same period, support among Democrats for wind and solar remained high and steady.

“This is a sizable and significant change,” said Alec Tyson, associate director of research at Pew Research Center. “It’s a new level of polarization on energy issues that we had not previously seen.”

The public’s appetite for electric vehicles has also fallen, with just 29 percent of Americans saying they would consider an E.V. for their next purchase, down from 38 percent in 2023.

Dropping Out Is Biden’s Most Patriotic Option

If he believes that Trump is a unique threat, the choice is clear.

Photo-illustration of Donald Trump and Joe Biden on the presidential-debate stage

Sign up for The Decision , a newsletter featuring our 2024 election coverage.

Joe Biden says he ran for president in 2020 because of Charlottesville. He says he ran because he saw the threat Donald Trump posed to the country and the threat he posed to democracy. If Biden truly believes that, he needs to end his reelection campaign. Indeed, dropping out could be the most patriotic gesture of his long career in public service, and every senior Democratic official and leader in the country should be pressuring him to act immediately.

Read: A disaster for Joe Biden

Throughout last night’s debate , Trump lied; obfuscated; and made bizarre, unsupported arguments about the economy, foreign policy, abortion, and the January 6 riot. A halfway competent opponent would have capitalized on these many, many errors. But Biden could barely speak coherently. The catastrophe of the incumbent’s performance is almost impossible to capture in words; you have to watch.

According to reporting by The New York Times , the campaign believed that the debate would “provide an opportunity to go on the offensive on issues like immigration and abortion access.” When asked about the latter—Biden’s best issue—he rambled about his worst issue, immigrant crime. You can read for yourself:

There’s many young women who’ve been—including the young woman who was just murdered and he went to the funeral—the idea that she was murdered by an immigrant coming in, they talk about that but here’s the deal, there’s a lot of young women being raped by their in-laws, by their spouses, brothers and sisters, it’s just ridiculous and they can do nothing about, they try to arrest them when they cross state lines.

Before the debate , the president spent a week with a full slate of advisers at Camp David: former Chief of Staff Ron Klain, current Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, White House senior adviser Anita Dunn, and campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon. This performance was rehearsed .

It should be the last straw. The president went into this debate as a historically unpopular candidate. At this point in his presidency, a lower percentage of Americans support him than have supported any other president since at least Harry Truman. He’s running behind Democratic candidates for Senate in Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin .

When the Times ’ Ezra Klein argued in February that Biden should step down , he was shot down by countless White House staff and Democratic leaders who claimed that Biden was up to the challenge of campaigning. And when Biden outperformed expectations at the State of the Union, speculation about his capacity to effectively campaign became more subdued.

But not anymore. Last night, Biden’s advisers were clearly underwhelmed with his performance; during the debate, they began leaking that he had a cold. After the event, when pressed repeatedly by Anderson Cooper on CNN, even Vice President Kamala Harris was forced to concede that the president’s showing had been lackluster. “He’s losing,” one prominent Democratic Party operative, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue, told me by direct message. “The campaign said this debate would help him and it did not. Now he has no credible argument for how he’s going to turn the race around by November, especially since the convention is going to be a shit show.”

The problem facing the country is twofold. First, because the primaries are over, Biden would have to voluntarily step aside; there’s no other way for his party to nominate someone else. And second, there’s a first-mover disadvantage at play. No one wants to stick out their neck and end up as the laughingstock of the party—as Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota did when he briefly challenged Biden for this year’s Democratic nomination. And for those closest to Biden—Jill Biden, Val Biden, Mike Donilon, Ted Kaufman, and all those who joined him at Camp David this week—the question will be whether they can put the needs of their country above their loyalty to the current president.

In their recent book, The Hollow Parties , the political scientists Daniel Schlozman and Sam Rosenfeld discuss the weakening of the Democratic and Republican establishments. In another age, no party apparatus would have allowed an aging, frail Joe Biden to get to this point. I recently asked Schlozman why the Democratic Party hasn’t simply replaced Biden—why Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison hasn’t called Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, or any number of other Democrats and tried to whip up support for them as potential replacements for Biden.

As a political scientist, Schlozman hates questions like this, so he answered me somewhat facetiously: He cited “the old joke of ‘Why is Profiles in Courage such a short book?’ ‘Because we don’t see these kinds of behaviors very much.’”

But what’s needed right now is exactly that kind of bravery: uncommon fortitude in the face of atrophied party institutions that have lost the power to prevent the rise of candidates such as Trump, and, more to the point, Biden’s continued presence in the race.

What exactly happens if Biden drops out? Well, there are two options. Either he drops out and endorses another candidate, or he allows the party to decide at the convention. Ideally, he would do the latter, to allow a competitive process to determine his successor as the Democratic nominee.

Either way, I have no illusions that any of this would be orderly. Speeding through a nominating process in a month and a half because the incumbent has decided he’s incapable of victory is going to be chaotic, and the Democrats could end up with a candidate with serious vulnerabilities.

But as Biden showed last night, the party most certainly has a flawed candidate now. The Democrats need to be able to find a nominee who’s actually able to mount a vigorous challenge to Trump and the singular threat he poses to American democracy.
