Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens or more commonly known as Mysore Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world. Established in the year 1892 by the Royals of the Mysore, this Zoological Gardens was formed from a part of Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar’s summer palace area.

Located within an area of 157 acres (64 hectares), Mysore Zoo is the second most visited place in Mysore after Mysore Palace. It is currently an abode to 1,450 specimens of animals and birds consisting of 168 species belonging to more than 25 countries.

History of Mysore Zoo

This century-old Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens has a very interesting history to be proud of. The then Maharaja Chamarajendra was a visionary and wanted to design a wee laid city. he envisioned the city with full of gardens, great landscape and owning a zoo of its own. Initially designed as a private zoo for the Royals which was named as Khas-Bangale and even Thamash Bangle. The entry of the general public started in 1920.

Mr. G.H. Krumbeigal, a German horticulturist, and landscaper were appointed to set up the Zoological gardens, which was originally 10 acres in size. The zoo was subsequently expanded to 45 acres in size over the next 10 years and the work of expansion and landscaping was given to Australian national called Mr. Huge. The administration of the zoo, post-independence was handed over by the then King to the Department of Parks and Gardens run by the then Mysore State Government.

Karanji Lake which covers an area of 77.02 acres is also a part of the zoo. This lake was taken over by the zoo in the year 1976.

The Planning

Meticulous planning is the special feature of Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, all the species of animals live in their natural habitat without any cages or barricades. The Zoological Gardens is designed on modern lines and enclosures for animals are provided using moats.

Maharaja Chamarajendra personally selected the animals from various countries of Europe and Africa. He brought animals like Primates, Antelopes, Chimpanzee, Giraffes, Orangutans, Gorillas and Bears. He also brought rare exhibits like American Bison, Polar Bear, Californian Sea Horse, Polar Bear, White Elephant, Penguin and Kangaroo and successfully exhibited them.

Animals and Birds at Mysore Zoo

The Zoological Gardens is proud to have a collecting of big cats like Cheetah, Jaguar, Tiger, Lion and small cats like Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat, Common Palm Civet and Small Indian Civet. It is the only zoo in India to exhibit a Gorilla. Other Primates include Baboon, Capuchin Monkey, and Marmoset, a variety of Lemur, Chimpanzee and common Indian Langur.

The Zoological Garden is also abode to large mammals like Elephants belonging to both Asiatic and African region, Black and White African Rhino, Gaur and Hippopotamus.

The Zoological Gardens is also proud to own flightless birds like Emu, Rhea, Ostrich, and Cassowary. There is also a huge collection of Terrestrial birds, aquatic birds, deers, antelopes, ducks, and reptiles.

A massive aviary is built in the Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens. A bridge is made right in the centre of the aviary, to enable visitors to walk through the bridge and watch the birds closely. Painted Stork, Pelican, Blue and White Peacocks, colourful Flamingoes, Cranes, etc. can be seen in this aviary very easily.

Apart from exhibiting animals the Zoological Gardens also has an aquarium and a museum. The zoo museum exhibits stuffed animals. The Zoological Gardens also has a library and a veterinary hospital. The zoo regularly organizes essay and painting competitions to create love and awareness towards amongst children.

Animal Adoption Program at Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens

The zoo is into wildlife conservation programs like captive breeding for endangered species. To run these programs successfully requires financial support on a regular basis. In order to fund the same, the Zoological Gardens has launched an animal adoption program wherein the general public can adopt an animal for a complete year. Under this program, one can contribute towards the feeding expenditures towards the animal of their choice.

3 km from the heart of the city, Mysore zoo is famed to be one of the oldest and the largest zoos in India. It is just 2 km away from the popular Mysore Maharaja Palace . With the beauty of Chamundi hills beside it, it offered not just a rich flora and fauna but also a breath-taking scenic beauty, incomparable to any other. Mysore zoo also had record number of housing various avian species, which are more than 40 other countries in the world. It is known for breeding of rare animals which is a feature present in very few other zoos in the world. Another feature to its credit is that number of visitors that it attracts every year; it is said that more than 2 million of tourists visit Mysore zoo in a year from all over the world.

Mysore Zoological Park History

Primarily this zoo was called as 'Khasa Bangle' or ‘Private Bungalow’ and used to be a unique zoo which was spread over an area of 10 acres, housing different kinds of birds. It was established by the then Mysore ruler Chamarajendra Wadiyar Bahadur in 1892.

It was later called as Palace Zoological gardens. However, again it’s name was changed to Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in the year of 1909. This was done in respect to the king Chamarajendra Wadiyar Bahadur whose efforts led to the establishment of this zoo. In 1948, the administration of zoo was shifted to Horticulture department from palace. Later, these zoological gardens eventually in 1979 were transferred to the Zoo Authority of Karnataka.

Although initially the area of zoo was 10.3 acres, in 1907, an additional area of 6.22 acres was merged with the zoo, while later it was again increases to an area of 45 acres. The area of the zoo was again extended to over 80 acres over a period of few years.

Fauna at Mysore Zoo

Mysore Zoo boasts of amazing and rare variety of fauna. For instance, it is the only Indian zoo that has all three species of Rhino i.e. white, black and Indian rhino. Brown bear, sloth bear, brown lemur, Nilgiri langur, chimpanzee, orangutan and the Himalayan bear are a few other wild animals that can be spotted here. This zoo is also known for its tigers. It is also said to be one of the main center which has seen fast multiplication of tigers. Many of these animals here have been listed in the books of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

A very unique feature of Mysore Zoo is its role in the adoption and rearing of animals from around the world. Many endangered species are brought here for for conservation and protection of animals. Many exotic animals are displayed in natural environment so as to create awareness about their protection and to offer an educative experience about them.

It was in Mysore zoo, that pair of Orangutans, Gorilla and some Chimpanzees were brought in an Indian zoo for the first time (1977). This zoo had also received calves of elephant, tiger and leopard cubs, etc. that were successfully raised here. It had also received Giraffe from Germany in 1986, pair of Red Kangaroos from Washington DC, lemurs from Duke University along with the opportunity to raise rare species such as Red Ibis, Penguins, Indian Rhinoceros, Hanuman Langurs, White Peafowl, Binturong, etc.

With Karanji Lake being included in the zoo, the zoo now attracts of a range of birds as well. Keeping its increasing avian fauna in consideration, there are plans to develop a bird sanctuary around the lake as well.

Flora at Mysore Zoo

This zoo boasts of many exquisite species of plants as well. The zoological garden presents a range of ornamental plants and trees, some of which are even brought from outside India. It is estimated to have about 85 different species of trees along with 35 varying species of ornamental plants. The flora of the zoo creates a landscape which not only accentuates the beauty of the place but build a favorable environment for the animals and birds to survive in the best possible way.

Best time to visit to Mysore Zoo

The zoo is open on all days of the week. It is closed on Tuesday. Mysore zoo timings are 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. However, if you like bird watching then the best time to visit in morning as birds are said to be more active during early hours of the day. During summer season, most of the animals and birds stay hidden due to heat, hence it is advisable to visit either before 10.30 AM or after 3 PM in summers.

There is a minimal entry fees for entering the zoo. During weekdays, entry fee for Mysore zoo is Rs.50 per person for adults and Rs.20 per person for children between the age group of 5 to 12 years. During weekends, (Saturday and Sunday, entrance charges are Rs.60/- for adults and Rs.30/- for children. The charges for still camera is also negligible, i.e. Rs.20. For carrying video camera, you need to pay a fee of Rs.150.

Reaching Mysore Zoo

Tourists will not find any problem in reaching Mysore zoo because of its ideal location. It is only 3 km from Mysore bus stand and just 2 km from the Mysore Palace. There are many city buses which run to Mysore zoo. Apart from that visitors can take an auto-rickshaw as well. There are also horse carts running from Mysore Palace to Mysore zoo offering a completely new experience of commuting.

Located in the heart of Mysore city, the zoo is a very popular tourist attraction. It's arguably the second sought after attraction in the city after Mysore Palace. There are many reasons for its popularity. The location is an obvious plus point from a itinerary point. More importantly this is a sprawling zoo with a great variety of exotic and rare animals. The animals are let in a natural habitat like environment. For the visitors it is a joyous place to explore in a picnic style.

Mysore zoo is one of the oldest zoo in the country. This was started way back in 1892 as a private zoo attached to the palace. Though it is popularly called "Mysore Zoo", the official name is Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, named after its founding maharaja Shri Chamarajendra Wodeyar.

So what do you get to see in Mysore zoo. Leaving the usual suspects apart, this is the only zoo in India to have a Gorilla. The zoo also houses Chimpanzee. The huge trenches draws big crowd.

Other exotic animals of Mysore zoo include Giraffes, Zebras, White Deer, African Elephants, Bears, Porcupines, Rhinoceros, Tapir ,Otters etc.

The Indian species of note includes Gaur, Bisons, Nilgai, Spotted Deer, Black Bucks, Bears, Tiger, Jakal, Barking Deer, Panther, White (albino) Tiger,Tigers, Lions, Leopards and a great number of elephants.

There is a massive aviary (a netted enclosure) with a bridge passing right through the center. Visitors can walk through these enclosures and observe the birds closely. Reach the aviary point early as the entry closes by 5pm though zoo closes by 5.30pm. (see Mysore Zoo Timings for the tour itinerary suggestions and tips).The bird species inside the aviary includes Spoon Bill, Pelican, Painted Stork. You can also see a great variety of birds like White and Blue Peacocks, Silver and Gold Peasant, Horn Bill; the flightless Emu and Ostrich; brightly coloured Flamingos; the largest bird of India the Sarus Cranes; Love Birds, various types of Geese, Ducks, Parrots,Vultures, Eagles and so on. The reptile section has a large number of cobras, King Cobra, Python and even the star studded turtles.

The zoo successfully runs what is calls the animal adoption program. The general public are encouraged to adopt the animals for a stipulated period ( typically 1-2 years). The adoption cost of various animals are prefixed. The adopter name are duration of adoption is displayed at each enclosures. Many organizations and individual animal lovers patrons the program. Another important aspect of the zoo is it is a 'No Plastic' zone. If you carry those  "use and throw" snack packets, they will ask to transfer to the paper bags provided. This is the first thing they will do as you cross the zoo entrance.

It takes anything from 2 hours to visit this sprawling zoo. The animal enclosures are large and scattered quite apart. You'll be walking many kilometers before completing the tour. If that looks like a challenge, there is a battery operated buggy service that makes a round trip. But this zoo is best enjoyed on foot. Towards the end there are some snack stalls and a souvenir shop.

Keep in mind this zoo gets huge crowds, especially during the weekends and other holiday seasons. The problem is the rather long queues at the ticket counter and at the entrance gate during the peak seasons. Like mentioned earlier, the inside of the zoo is sprawling that can accommodate large number of visitors. The zoo is at a short distance from Mysore Palace , on the way to Chamundi Hills. About Mysore Zoo

Mysore Zoo (officially known as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens) is a 157-acre (64 ha) zoo located on the eastern edge of the city. Mysore Zoo is one of the city’s most popular attractions and one of the oldest and most popular zoos in India. It is home to a wide range of species, about 168 species in total. The zoo was established under royal patronage in 1892, making it one of the oldest zoos in the world.

While mainly depending on entry fees for its financing, an adoption scheme was introduced in the early 2000s at Mysore Zoo which has been a success, with Indian celebrities, institutions, and animal lovers contributing directly to the welfare of the zoo inmates.

Mysore Zoo was originally created in 1892 on 10 acres (4.0 ha) of the summer palace of Maharaja Sri Chamaraja Wodeyar, and was originally called the Palace Zoo. The zoo was originally set up by G.H. Krumbeigal, a German landscaper and horticulturist. Over the next 10 years the zoo was expanded to 45 acres (18 ha) with spacious enclosures that are still in use. The zoo was opened to the public in 1902, and now includes a bandstand and an artificial lake.

The zoo is currently home to ten elephants, and has more elephants than any other zoo in India. A total of 34 elephants have lived at this zoo, many of which were eventually transferred to other zoos. The zoo also has five green anacondas, contributed by Colombo Zoo. It also has giraffes, zebras, lions, tigers, white rhinoceroses, and baboons.

The Mysore Zoo has a large collection of Indian birds and animals including white peacocks, Indian hornbill, Royal Bengal tigers, gaurs, Indian elephants, and Indian leopard.

Mysore Zoo has been famous for housing giraffes. Standing tall, they are a huge hit with children and therefore placed at the entrance to the zoo. The zoo has five giraffes including ‘Lakshmi’ a 2-year old female giraffe. The giraffes are adopted by popular Indian cricketer, Anil Kumble.

The zoo also has a good collection of deers and antelopes including several Indian deer varieties such as Barasingha (swamp deer), Indian Muntjac, and Sambar. Due to the excellent weather conditions, the zoo has bred most of their deers and antelopes successfully over the years.

Recently, Mysore Zoo rescued two Royal Bengal tigers, Amrita and Shiva, from Nagarhole and Bandipura Tiger Reserves. Amrita has a sustained injury in her foreleg while Shiva is aged so they will both spend the rest of their lives in captive conditions and will continue to be a star attraction at the zoo.

Mysore Zoo is also home to a very popular and hostile white tiger.

Mysore Zoo Gorilla & Other Primates

African and Indian primates are always a popular attraction at zoos and Mysore Zoo has no shortage of these primates. Ranging from the common Indian macaques to the more exotic Hamadryas baboons, the primates at this zoo are very entertaining.

Polo, the African gorilla loves his swing and can be caught sitting on it any time of the day.

(Unfortunately, Polo, India’s only gorilla died in April 2014 due to old age. He was 41 years old.)

Mysore Zoo is open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm daily except for Tuesdays. The best time to visit the zoo is in the morning when the sun is not that strong and the animals are active. Try to visit during the week when there are less crowds.

While mainly depending on entry fees for its financing, an adoption scheme introduced in the early 2000s has been a success. Celebrities, institutions, animal lovers and volunteers of various clubs in the zoo have contributed directly to the welfare of the zoo inmates.

Mysore Zoo was created in 1892 on 10 acres (4.0 ha) of the summer palace of Maharaja Sri Chamaraja Wodeyar, and was originally called the Palace Zoo. The zoo was originally set up by G.H. Krumbiegel, a German landscaper and horticulturist. Over the next 10 years the zoo was expanded to 45 acres (18 ha) with spacious enclosures that are still in use.

The zoo was opened to the public in 1902, and now includes a bandstand and an artificial lake. It was given to the Department of Parks and Gardens of the Mysore State Government in 1948. The zoo was expanded first with another 50 acres (20 ha), and then another 150 acres (61 ha) with the acquisition of the Karanji Tank (Karanji reservoir), in which an artificial island has been created as a sanctuary for birds.

The zoo was handed over to the Forest Department in 1972, and was entrusted to Zoo Authority of Karnataka (the first autonomous organization in India to manage a zoo) in 1979.

The zoo had completed 100 years in 1992. The centenary celebrations were held in 1990 and 91. During the centenary celebrations various developmental activities were initiated such as renovation & modification of entrance gate, hospital building, Walk Through Reptiles, etc. The bust of Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar, founder of Mysore Zoo was unveiled. The logo of the zoo, centenary souvenir, publication of literature & leaflets, conducting various competitions, preparation of a documentary film were other highlights.

A Day at Mysore Zoo, what to expect? – Image Gallery

Mysore Zoo is South India’s biggest and oldest zoo. The variety of animals and birds that can be admired at is worth appreciating. The zoo also hosts some of the exotic species like Giraffe and Zibras. You can also spot a white peacock and an elegant white tiger in the Zoo.

Located very close to the Mysore palace, this world renowned Zoo fits perfectly in your one day itinerary of Mysore. Mysore Zoo is a bit commercial but, totally worth your time if you admire wildlife and the forest dwellers. The Zoo also has a reptile section where you can spot King cobra, giant pythons and many other snake species.

The Mysore Zoo is actually pretty vast! You have to walk a good 3 KMs to be able to view all the species. However, if you skip some portions, you can save 1 Km or so. My favorite animal here was the very elegant Giraffe. I couldn’t help but stare away at this glorious herbivore! I wonder how spectacular would it be to witness them in their full grandeur in Africa! I have heard of some stays there where a Giraffe feeds on plants in your room’s balcony! Must be an amazing feeling I wonder.

1) What are the Zoo timings?

8:30 AM to 5: 30 PM. Saturday timings are also the same. The Zoo is open on Sundays but closed on Tuesdays.

2) What is the best time to visit the Zoo?

The best time would be before 11 AM or after 3 pm. Due to intense heat at times, the animals prefer to rest in shades during 11 am to 3 pm.

3) How big is the Zoo?

There are 1450 individual creatures belonging to 170 species in Mysore Zoo. To cover all the species, you need to walk around 3 KMs!

4) What are the ticket charges?

Rs 60 on saturdays, sundays and holidays. On other days, it is Rs 50. For children between 5 – 12 yrs, the charge is Rs 20. Children younger than 5 years are allowed for free. Still Camera charge is Rs 20 and Video Camera would cost Rs 150.

5) How long would it take to see the entire zoo?

It should take around 3 hours if you decide to see each species.

6) What are the highlights of the Zoo?

Our Mysore zoo trip from Bangalore

Once upon a time zoo used to be last on our list of places to visit anywhere. After all, what’s in a zoo, 90% of the same old animals in the same colors. But now, where ever we go, zoo always is on top of our list. In conclusion, having a toddler really changes things !! And you do need an efficient list of tips for traveling with toddler to make the vacation time enjoyable. Just like all other toddlers, ours gets so super excited when it comes to animals, be it street dogs or the colorful animals on her bed sheet or her animal stuff toys. So, this time in 2016 , on her second birthday, we decided to take her on a Mysore zoo trip from Bangalore.

While it’s always more exciting and better to watch the animals in their real habitats. ( I will prefer the Wildlife Observatory in Alaska or the Jim Corbett or Gir National Park anytime over a zoo). But it is not always feasible (And also that easy to score a cheap flight ticket , find the right accommodation on a whims and pull off an outdoor adventure trip with kids). So, we settled for the Mysore Zoo this time.

But weather was not supportive so far, with harsh sunshine and heat waves starting right by 8:00am or 9:00 am in the morning. Finally, after much awaiting, the pre monsoon showers started. With this, the temperature also dropped. And soon the days started to be cloudy with pleasant wind blowing. It looked like an idle time for a nice couple of hours drive. Thats why we chose Mysore zoo trip from Bangalore instead of any other zoo. So finally, we started on our trip, packed with our kid’s travel snacks , essential medicines , a few pair of extra cloths, some regular travel products for her and our camera to capture the moments of her first day trip.

Some background of Mysore Zoo

Mysore zoo is one of the 10 most popular zoos in India. Is is oficially known as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens . And, it is located right in front of the Mysore palace in Mysore, India. So much so that the entrance is almost opposite to the Mysore Palace entrance. So the Mysore Zoo and Mysore palace are at walking distance. It sprawls over a huge area of 157-acres. This makes is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in south India as well as Asia. (We did visit Singapore Zoo afterwards, which is the second largest and again very popular. In comparison, Mysore Zoo is much more vast.)

This zoo was established by Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar in 1892. However, not just in India, but in the whole world it is renowned as one of the oldest zoos. Mysore zoo is home to largest number of elephants compared to any other zoo in India. Currently it houses around 10 elephants. Apart from elephants, some of the other exotic fauna includes striped Hyena, Jungle cat, Asiatic black bears, African Elephant. It is also the only zoo in South Asia to host a Gorilla. Apart from this, the zoo is home to bengal tiger, Indian wolves, giraffe, leopard, hippopotamus, rhyno, crane, swan, zebra and many other animals and reptiles.

Lake Karajni

The nearby lake, karanji lake is also a part of Mysore zoo now. This lake is situated amidst the vast greenery of the zoological garden with a backdrop of Chamundi hills. Boating facilities are provided on the lake. Also, the animals stationed at Mysore zoo are provided large, specious enclosures to give them the feeling of being at their natural habitat. The zoo is open all year round from 8:00am to 5:30pm, except for Tuesdays. But it is advised to visit early in the morning before 11am or late in the evening after 3:00pm since in between, the animals tend to be inactive due to mostly hot weather and hence may not be spotted.

Our experience

We booked our entrance tickets online from the official zoo website to avoid the queue at the entrance. Since the weather was cloudy, we started on mysore zoo trip from bangalore little late from our home & reached the zoo by 10:30 am. However, we were able to site most of the animals. While some were enjoying an afternoon nap. It takes considerable amount of time to cover the whole area and see all the animals, if you choose to walk by foot. So, there is an electrically operated vehicle also available inside the campus at an extra charge, which would take you around the zoo if you don’t prefer to walk.

However, the area inside is lush green. And thus, you will not feel heat or tiredness at all as long as you walk within shades.  Most of the path has ample shade all through the day. Overall, the whole zoo is very well landscaped. There is facility of washrooms , child care rooms and drinking water at every few steps. There are benches all around to take rest intermittently. Take a picture of the mysore zoo map which you will see on a board near entrance.

We entered from the main gate of the zoo. Right in front of the entrance is a pathway from where the zoo starts. Both the sides of this pathway are lined with birds of different types that include parrots, parakeets, peacocks, white peacocks, swan, crane. We walked down this path, our daughter thoroughly enjoying the scene. Some of the birds were being fed by the zoo assistances. My daughter excitedly watched the birds being fed. Next came the monkeys of different breeds. These animals are caged.

Wild animals

After watching the monkeys, next we headed further into the zoo. The next section was where leopard resides. There are 7-8 leopards. They are kept inside a big enclosure. Since the animals need to feel at home. So, plants and trees are placed inside the enclosure. Some of the leopards were sleeping while others were roaming around leisurely. At the other end was the Tiger’s enclosure. A tiger and a tigress live here. One of them was taking rest while the other was walking around leisurely. I can’t put my daughter’s excitement into words as she saw these animals. (The only drawback is that ask her now where a tiger lives and she says zoo :D).  Then we crossed several other animals including lion, bengal tiger (white tiger), zebra, wolves etc.

Not so wild animals

We took short breaks in between to feed our daughter. During these breaks, we rested at the benches on the way. Then we arrived in another section of the zoo that consisted of not so wild animals. We saw a huge field dedicated to bisons. Then came another section where there were herds of deer. Crossing this, we arrived at herds of buffaloes. We also spotted a peacock freely roaming around in the campus. Then we met the gorilla. After this, we arrived at the enclosure where the elephants are kept. Then we came face to face with Giraffe. There were some 5-6 giraffe quietly eating the grass, least bothered about the surroundings and the people who were circling them. My daughter was super excited here as well.

The water birds & animals

Crossing the Giraffe, you reach at a small section where there are numerous ponds. In these ponds reside different species of crocodiles, gharial, tortoise, turtles, water birds , ducks etc. The section is a little artistically done. There are small footbridges constructed across the water bodies that provide a better view of the birds and animals.

The reptiles

As you move further on, you will enter a shade where there are numerous glass enclosures on either side. Each of these enclosure contains a variety of the reptile family. These include a huge ratsnake, kobra, some non-poisenous varieties, small and big.. numerous snakes. Some chameleon varieties can also be seen

Refreshment

Almost 1km before the entrance, there is a nice eatery where there are numerous options to get rid of tiredness and have your meal. The ice creams seemed to be highly popular given the moderately hot weather. However, if you buy a plastic water bottle , you will be charged INR 10 extra. And when you hand it over near the zoo exit, your extra bucks will be returned to you. This way, majority of people take care of carrying their plastic bottles all the way to the zoo exit and it helps keep the zoo plastic free.

When you buy an icecream with a cover, you can return the cover at the counter then and there and they will take care of it’s disposal. I really liked these little initiatives towards keeping the area clean and eco friendly. And I hope all the tourists understand it’s importance and adhere to the rules. Apart from this, there are restrooms and drinking water facilities at every few hundred meters. These kind of refreshment facilities are really important given it’s mostly children who visit the zoo and hence will require such facilities.

The meal options here comprise of north Indian, south Indian, noodles, thalis, sweets and ready to eat snacks. The prices are reasonable and taste decent. We will recommend you have food here before exiting the zoo. This will give you a chance to relax your tired feet and also save time hunting for a restaurant outside. After you exit the zoo, you can proceed to the next site seeing spot or you can just get back home.

Animal adoption

Mysore zoo also runs an animal adoption program which has been a great success. It provides you the facility to adopt an animal right from your home. You can check the details on the official zoo website . Those who adopt, their name is displayed in the zoo near the adopted animal’s habitat.

Overall the day was very well spent. The little one enjoyed it to the fullest. It gave us the feeling of fulfillment and made the trip a success. To all the animal lovers and parents, if you visit South India or you happen to live somewhere near Mysore / Bangalore we would recommend you visit here once. It will be a day well spent.

Tips on visiting Mysore zoo

• You can book Mysore Zoo entry tickets online from their website.
• Although the Mysore zoo timings are from 8:30am to 5:30pm. But, the best time to visit is early morning till 11:30. Or then in the afternoon after 4pm. Since in the afternoon most animals fall asleep  deep inside their enclosures and hence may not be seen.
• If you have toddler with you, you may want to carry their essentials along.
• There are sufficient drinking water sources and restrooms inside the campus.
• Don’t forget your sunglasses and hat or umbrella to combat the hot weather in case you are planning to visit on a sunny day.
• Wear comfortable cotton cloths
• Wear comfortable walking shoes as you will walk more than 5 kilometers inside the zoo campus itself
• Keep at least 4-5 hours aside for visit to the zoo.
• It had got a little tiring for our toddler on this mysore zoo trip from bangalore. We suggest you stay overnight in Mysore when doing this trip. We also saw deer and kangaroos. Next, we saw many varieties of birds like cranes, ducks, pigeons, parrots, kingfishers, owls, etc. We also saw our national bird peacock in the zoo. Then we came to the glass houses. Animals of different kinds and colour were kept in them. At last, we enjoyed an elephant ride and returned home.

Essay on a Visit to a Zoo: 150 Words

Last Sunday, I visited a zoo with my family. First, we went round the bird’s section. We saw parrots, sparrows, pigeons, peacocks, eagles, and vultures. Then we saw the cages of wild animals like tigers, lions, and leopards. A lion was walking up and down restlessly. It often roared furiously. The baby tigers were playing in their cage.

We saw the deer park, where only the deer were kept. We also saw zebras, bears, foxes, giraffes, a hippo, and a rhino. Then we went to the huge enclosure where the elephants were kept. They were eating grasses, leaves, and bananas. We enjoyed watching the monkeys.

We saw serpents, pythons, and cobras. Next, we saw many swans and ducks swimming gracefully in a big pool of water. The crocodiles lay Lazily near the water. We also saw a tank which contained small fishes of fine colours. We had a great fun at the zoo.

A Visit to Zoo Essay: 200 Words

A zoo is a place where animals and birds are kept for public display. We, the three friends, went to the Alipore Zoo, Kolkata. We saw two elephants, tied with iron chains by their hind legs. The visitors offered them bananas or nuts which they gladly accepted and swallowed. We were greatly amused to see the huge animals from so near.

Then we visited the bird’s section. There were hundreds of birds. They were of various colours and had lovely plumage (feathers). Their chirping produced soft music. The twittering of sparrows was very pleasant to the ear. At some distance, there was a big pool of water. Many ducks and swans were swimming gracefully in it. We also saw a tank which contained small fishes of fine colours.

Then we came to the cages of tigers, panthers, leopards and lions. They were wonderful. The serpent house gave us a new experience. We saw there various types of snakes on the first floor. Then we saw the bisons, the camels, the ostriches and the bats. The zebras and giraffes were really beautiful who looked innocent and friendly.

It was about 2 P.M when we had taken some light refreshment in the zoo canteen. In this way, we passed the day with much delight and acquired a wonderful experience.

A Visit to a Zoo Essay: 250 Words

A Visit To A Zoo is very thrilling. I went to see the zoo with my younger brother. One is surprised to see such a variety of animals and birds. It was an interesting sight. First of all, we saw the monkeys. They were of many kinds and very amusing. We offered some nuts to them.

Then we came to the lions. They looked very fierce and majestic. They were kept in an open place enclosed with high iron railings. Sometimes they roared terribly. Next, we saw the tigers. They had yellow skins with black stripes on them. In the next two cages, there were a wolf and a fox. The wolf was sleeping, but the fox was walking within the cage.

Then we saw the long-necked giraffe, the dark-striped zebra, the thick-skinned rhinoceros, and a huge elephant with beautiful ivory tusks. We were very pleased to see them. After this, we came to the glass houses where reptiles were kept. There were snakes, cobras, and serpents. Some of them looked fearful. We did not stay there long.

Then we came to the fences where peacocks were kept. It was a treat to see one of them in his pride (i.e. with his tail spread like a fan).

We stayed three for three hours. We were tired. At last, we went to the cafe and had some refreshment and tea. Then we returned home. We enjoyed our visit very much.

Essay on a Visit to a Zoo: 500 Words

Introduction:.

Everyone needs relaxation and an occasional deviation from the drudgeries of daily existence. A visit to a zoo can offer him these. At the same time, it is a learning experience. It was with this intention that visited the Alipore Zoological Garden last 25th December with some of my friends. This visit was memorable because it was both enjoyable and educational.

Entering the Zoo:

We reached the gate of the zoo in a taxi around 10 am. One has to buy tickets to enter the zoo. A number of visitors were already standing in a queue before the ticket counter. We stood behind them, got our tickets and entered the big arena of the zoo.

Various Types of Birds and Animals:

We crossed the green sward and were greeted by varieties of monkeys in cages. Monkeys and baboons were jumping on the trees within their enclosures. When some people threw food at them, they immediately jumped down from the trees to eat. Some children were making faces at them.

Then, we came across a beautiful lake in which some water birds like ducks and swans were present. There were some migratory birds as well. As we moved, we came to the big netted enclosure in which birds were kept. There were sparrows, parrots, and many other birds. Most of them were twittering, chirping and whistling. But the owls were sitting with their eyes closed as if they were lost in deep thought. The chirping of the birds went on ringing deep in my heart. In their songs, I heard the voice of nature to which the whole universe surrendered. I felt that all was right with the world.

We visited the tigers, lions, zebras, giraffes, rhinos and elephants. Roars of the lions and the tigers were deafening. We found a tiger pacing restlessly with its bloodshot eyes. It was strongly built.

Then we came across a garden in which stags and deer were frisking about. These animals were very agile and beautiful.

Our next halt was at the aquarium section. There were fishes of many species and colours. To see them swimming to and fro in the water was really a rewarding experience. Just beside this enclosure, was the cage of a black bear. It attracted a mammoth gathering. The bear was playing many tricks that thrilled us. Some people offered it eatables which it gulped at once.

Leaving the Zoo:

At about 2 pm, feeling tired, we rested and relaxed on the grassy ground for half an hour. The fragrance of flowers coming from somewhere was really soothing. We again began to stroll around the zoo after having our lunch. We saw a variety of amphibians like crocodiles, snakes, frogs, and a variety of other creatures. Then we hired a boat and enjoyed a short pleasurable ride in the canal. It was around 5 pm when we came out of the zoo. We boarded a bus, casting our last and lingering look on the zoo.

Conclusion:

I reached home in a cheerful mood. This visit refreshed my mind and deepened my awareness of the animal world.
