How to Describe an Animal: A Guide on Descriptive Writing

When it comes to descriptive writing, painting a vivid picture using words is essential. whether you’re writing a story, an essay, or simply want to express your admiration for an animal, mastering the art of animal description can greatly enhance your writing. in this guide, we will provide you with helpful tips on how to describe an animal effectively..

How to Describe an Animal: A Guide on Descriptive Writing

1. Observe and Research

The first step in describing an animal is to observe it carefully. Pay attention to its appearance, behavior, and unique features. Take notes on what you see and capture the essence of the animal.

Additionally, conduct some research to gather valuable information about the animal. Learn about its habitat, diet, and any interesting facts that can further enrich your description.

2. Use Vivid Adjectives

One of the keys to creating a captivating animal description is to use vivid adjectives. These descriptive words help to paint a detailed image in the reader’s mind. For example, instead of saying a bird has wings, you could say it has magnificent, graceful wings that effortlessly carry it through the sky.

Think about the animal’s size, shape, color, and texture, and pick adjectives that accurately represent these characteristics. Aim to evoke emotions and create a sensory experience for your readers.

3. Describe Behaviors and Movements

An animal’s behavior and movements can say a lot about its personality and traits. Describe how the animal moves, whether it slithers, leaps, trots, or glides. Pay attention to any distinct behaviors it exhibits, such as grooming, hunting, or communicating with others of its kind.

By focusing on these details, you can create a more dynamic and engaging description that captures the essence of the animal’s actions.

4. Appeal to the Senses

To truly bring your description to life, appeal to the reader’s senses. Incorporate sensory details that allow the reader to imagine what it’s like to see, hear, smell, touch, and even taste the animal.

For instance, describe the vibrant colors of a tropical fish, the melodic chirping of a songbird, or the pungent scent of a skunk. These sensory elements transport the reader from mere reading to experiencing the animal through their imagination.

5. Create Comparisons

Comparisons can be a useful tool when describing an animal. By likening certain characteristics or behaviors to something familiar, readers can better grasp the qualities of the animal you’re describing.

For example, you could compare the flight of a butterfly to a delicate ballet or the stride of a cheetah to a lightning bolt. These comparisons not only aid in understanding but also make your description more memorable and relatable.

By carefully observing, researching, and implementing vivid adjectives, detailed descriptions of behavior, sensory elements, and effective comparisons, you can master the art of describing an animal. Keep practicing, and soon your animal descriptions will come to life on the page, captivating your readers and transporting them to the world of the animal kingdom.

How to Write an Expository Essay on an Animal

Last Updated: September 15, 2021

This article was co-authored by Bess Ruff, MA . Bess Ruff is a Geography PhD student at Florida State University. She received her MA in Environmental Science and Management from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2016. She has conducted survey work for marine spatial planning projects in the Caribbean and provided research support as a graduate fellow for the Sustainable Fisheries Group. Expository essays describe a particular topic and provide the reader with relevant information. An expository essay about an animal can take a variety of different directions. Choose a topic that interests you, outline and write your essay, and then proofread your work before turning it in.

Outlining and Researching

Step 1 Think of a topic.

  • An expository essay is an essay that provides the reader information about a particular topic. To write an expository essay on an animal, you'll have to choose an animal and provide a variety of information on that animal. It would likely include things like what that animal looks like, what it eats, where it lives, and so on.
  • Choose an animal that personally interests you. You'll have more fun writing your essay if you are writing about something you enjoy. Pick an animal you like. Your favorite animal could be a good topic for an expository essay on an animal.

Step 2 Understand what format your essay should follow.

  • You can review the assignment sheet given to you or ask your teacher in person. If you speak with your teacher, be sure to take notes so you can refer back to them when researching, outlining, writing, and polishing your essay.

Step 3 Research.

  • Look for sources that are valid. Major newspapers like the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle are a good place to start. You also might want to find some history behind your topic. Go your school's library and ask a librarian to help you use the card catalogue to locate books and magazines on your topic. An encyclopedia could be a good reference for an expository essay. [1] X Research source
  • The Internet is a major source of information and can be extremely helpful when researching. However, you should know how to evaluate sources before relying on the internet for information. Look for current resources so you know the information is up-to-date. Go for websites associated with universities or government organizations, with domains like .edu and .gov, over business or commercial websites.
  • Select pages where the author's name is clearly visible and the page is easy to navigate. Personal blogs are not a good resource. Websites for organizations advocating strongly for a particular political cause may have a strong bias. Avoid sites like Wikipedia, as they are user generated and may not have accurate information.
  • Take notes while researching. Keep a notebook with you and jot down relevant information. Write down which source you got this information from so you can refer to the source later on. If possible, print out your own copies of library texts so you can underline and write notes in the margins.

Step 4 Outline...

  • Outlines are usually formed using a series of numbers and letter. You write down main points as headings and then expand upon these points in subheadings.
  • For example, you can use Roman numerals as headings and then use letters as subheadings. Say you're writing about potbelly pigs. You can start with “I. Introduction.” Then something like “a. Introduce my topic, including a brief description of potbelly pigs” and “b. briefly state the personality traits and appearance of a potbelly pig.”
  • You don't need to use full sentences in an outline. It's just a tool to help you organize your ideas. Don't worry about forming full sentences or thoughts yet. You can get to that during the writing process.

Writing the Essay

Step 1 Begin with an introduction.

  • Begin your introduction with a fun opening sentence that gets the reader's attention. You can open with a question, a quote, a joke, or anything that introduces your topic in a creative manner. For example, let's return to the potbelly pig example. Open with something like, "Did you know that not all pigs are farmyard animals? Some pigs are kept domestically as pets." This invites the reader to think about your topic.
  • From there, briefly state what you'll be discussing in your paper. You can provide a brief description of a potbelly pig, including things like a brief overview of their appearance and personality traits.

Step 2 Write paragraphs focusing on specific topics.

  • For example, one paragraph can describe the appearance of a potbelly pig. Another paragraph can then describe the eating habits of a potbelly pig, and another can talk about how to care for potbelly pigs, health problems they're prone to, and so on.
  • Make sure you stick to one main topic per paragraph.

Step 3 Back up your information with research.

  • Go to your sources for support of the information you're listing. If you're talking about how potbelly pigs are prone to bacterial infections in the ear, you'll need a source that shows that this is true.

Step 4 Write a conclusion.

  • Certain questions can help guide a good conclusion. Did you think of any new ideas about the animal you're researching? Are there any questions or concerns that need further research? What larger significance does your topic have in the bigger world?
  • However, you should not suddenly introduce new information in the conclusion. Instead, you should speculate and reflect on the information provided. Think of a good closing line that will stay in readers' minds. You want to make sure your essay has an impact. [2] X Research source

Reviewing Your Work

Step 1 Revise your first draft.

  • A good way to structure transitions is to make them a bridge between the old paragraph and the new. For example, to connect a paragraph on keeping a potbelly pig as a pet to a previous paragraph about eating habits, you could use something like this: "Although potbelly pigs can eat a variety of things in the wild, if you're keeping a potbelly pig as a pet, you need to be more careful about providing a balanced diet." The word Although sets up a connection between the ideas.
  • Focus on clarity. You want to make sure the information is presented in as straightforward means as possible. If you notice any sentences that seem unclear in your first draft, work on rewording them in revision.

Step 2 Proofread

How to write an animal report

Your teacher wants a written report on the beluga whale . Not to worry. Use these organizational tools from the Nat Geo Kids Almanac so you can stay afloat while writing a report.

STEPS TO SUCCESS:

Your report will follow the format of a descriptive or expository essay and should consist of a main idea, followed by supporting details and a conclusion. Use this basic structure for each paragraph as well as the whole report, and you’ll be on the right track.

Introduction

State your main idea .

The beluga whale is a common and important species of whale.

Provide supporting points for your main idea.

1. The beluga whale is one of the smallest whale species.

2. It is also known as the “white whale” because of its distinctive coloring.

3. These whales are common in the Arctic Ocean’s coastal waters.

Then expand on those points with further description, explanation, or discussion.

1a. Belugas range in size from 13 to 20 feet (4 to 6.1 m) in length.

2a. Belugas are born gray or brown. They fade to white at around five years old.

3a. Some Arctic belugas migrate south in large herds when sea ice freezes over.

Wrap it up with a summary of your whole paper.

Because of its unique coloring and unusual features, belugas are among the most familiar and easily distinguishable of all the whales.

Key Information

Here are some things you should consider including in your report:

What does your animal look like? To what other species is it related? How does it move? Where does it live? What does it eat? What are its predators? How long does it live? Is it endangered? Why do you find it interesting?

SEPARATE FACT FROM FICTION: Your animal may have been featured in a movie or in myths and legends. Compare and contrast how the animal has been portrayed with how it behaves in reality. For example, penguins can’t dance the way they do in Happy Feet.

PROOFREAD AND REVISE: As with any essay, when you’re finished, check for misspellings, grammatical mistakes, and punctuation errors. It often helps to have someone else proofread your work, too, as he or she may catch things you have missed. Also, look for ways to make your sentences and paragraphs even better. Add more descriptive language, choosing just the right verbs, adverbs, and adjectives to make your writing come alive.

BE CREATIVE: Use visual aids to make your report come to life. Include an animal photo file with interesting images found in magazines or printed from websites. Or draw your own! You can also build a miniature animal habitat diorama. Use creativity to help communicate your passion for the subject.

THE FINAL RESULT: Put it all together in one final, polished draft. Make it neat and clean, and remember to cite your references.

Feature image of Short Essay on My Favourite Animal

All animals are amazing but my favourite animal is the dog. Dogs are very loyal and make great pets. They love their owners and protect them from dangers. Dogs are largely carnivorous and eat meat, bones, organs, and some plant-based food.

Dogs are closely related to wolves, coyotes, and foxes and were domesticated by man thousands of years ago. They served as companions during hunts as well as protectors and guards. Today, dogs are mostly kept as pets at home and are treated as family members. However, there are many dogs who live miserable lives on the streets and are uncared for. We must take care of dogs and be kind to them.

Short Essay on My Favourite Animal Cat in 200 Words

I love all animals but my favourite animal is the cat. Cats are small and cute. They have tiny paws, sharp claws, and a furry body and tail. They have beautiful bright eyes which glow in the dark. They are commonly found in colours like black, white, brown, ginger, and orange.

There are more than 60 different varieties of cats. Cats are carnivorous mammals and love to eat different types of fish like tuna and salmon. They also eat meats like chicken, turkey, beef, some whole-grain foods, and eggs. In the wild, they are known to catch rats, mice, lizards, snakes, and other small animals for food.

Cats know how to take care of themselves and don’t demand much attention from their owners. Hence, they make great pets for people who work full time and live in small apartments. Cats love their freedom and space but they also love their owners.

They will always be there to cheer you up when you need them. They love to purr and rub against their owners to show them their affection. Many pet cats bring dead mice, twigs, and other things that they like to their owners as a token of appreciation. Each cat has a unique personality and they always make their humans happy.

Short Essay on My Favourite Animal Lion in 400 Words

All animals are unique and amazing in their own ways. I love them all but my favourite animal is the lion. Lions are wild animals and their natural habitat includes scrublands, grasslands, savannahs, and rocky hills. They were historically found in many places around the world but now, due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting activities, they are mostly found in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and reserves. However, they can still be found in the wild in Africa as well as in the Gir forest in Gujarat, India.

Lions are majestic animals and are known as the ‘King of the jungle’. There are many different subspecies of lions, like Asiatic lions, Barbary lions, Congo lions, Transvaal lions, and African lions. Male lions have a beautiful signature mane around their neck and are much larger than the females of the same species. Male lions are known to act as the protectors of the pride while the females do all the hunting.

Pride is a family unit of lions that may contain a few lions, a dozen or so lionesses, and their adolescent and young ones. Each pride has its own territory and lions mark and defend these areas by roaring and scent-marking. These territories are fiercely defended against intruding lions and male lions may sometimes get into huge fights over their territories.

Lions usually prey on medium to large animals like zebras, antelopes, hippopotamuses, and buffaloes but they can also kill and eat smaller or larger animals, depending on the need. They are also known to eat animals killed and left by other predators. Lionesses stalk their prey from nearby cover and then leap and lunge at its neck, biting and strangling it until it is killed. Members of the pride then come forward to feed on the kill. An adult lion can eat about 34 kilograms of meat at once.

Lions usually breed once every year in captivity but in the wild, they breed once every two or three years. Lion cubs are born with dark spots on their fur coat which fade away as they mature. They can follow their mother after 3 months and can participate in hunting after 11 months.

However, they still need assistance and can not survive on their own before two years of age. The cubs become adults at about three to four years of age and while most female cubs become members of their mother’s pride, male cubs are forced out and become nomads.

Lions are incredible animals and have always intrigued me. They are truly the ‘kings’.

Scientific studies say there are 4 types of animals; mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. All these types of animals are important in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. From the smallest insects to the largest mammals, each species has a unique role to play in the web of life.

One of the fundamental roles of animals is in ecosystem services. Bees and butterflies, for example, are crucial pollinators for many plants, including crops that humans rely on for food. Ethical considerations surrounding animal welfare are increasingly important, leading to discussions on responsible and humane treatment.

Animals are essential components of our planet’s ecosystems and contribute significantly to human culture and well-being. Balancing our interactions with animals through conservation, ethical treatment, and sustainable practices is imperative to ensure a harmonious coexistence and preserve the diversity of life on Earth.

Essay on Animals: The presence of animals is essential because it maintains the balance in the ecosystem. In today’s world, some animals also serve as companions and help reduce our stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Every organism has a unique place in the food chain, and each contributes to maintaining the existence of life on this planet. The man had learned early that with their more complex and advanced mind, they are superior to any other animal on the Earth.

What makes man superior to them? Humans had learned the ways they can use some animals for their survival, like for transportation or as a food source.

Long Essay on Animals 500 Words in English

The living organisms that are eukaryotes and formed of numerous cells and those who sexually reproduce are called animals. Animals play a unique role in maintaining the balance of nature. Several animal species exist in both land and water, and each has a purpose for their existence.

The animals are divided into particular groups in biology for better understanding of their species like- amphibians (the animals that can live on both land and water), reptiles (scaled body and cold-blooded animals), mammals (the animals that give birth to the offspring in the womb and has mammary glands), birds (forelimbs evolved to wings, mostly feather-covered body, and lays eggs for giving birth), fishes (has fins in place of limbs, and gills for respiration in water), insects (they are mostly six-legged or more, and most have a head, thorax, and abdomen), etc.

Since human beings’ existence and evolution, we have established ourselves as the greater and more superior species for our sophisticated and more advanced way of thinking and applying. Humans have also learned to use animals for their benefit and have realized how to incorporate animals into our social lives. Animal husbandry is not a new practice done and has been in existence for a very long time.

The bond between humans and animals has increased, and now both coexist with a mutual understanding of nature. We have also strived to preserve the near exist and rare species through modern modes of conservation like zoological gardens and sanctuaries.

We have used animals for clothes, food, transportation, and entertainment. Animals have also been beneficial for us to discover new things from research and tests. Several vaccines and medicines are the blessings of the resources we obtained from animals. Animals have also been a part of outer-space explorations, which has achieved milestones in scientific discoveries.

Among these activities, some were for good reasons and to sustain a livelihood, but some were just the act of evil and torture the poor animals. With the modernization of the world, people started thinking about animals and worked for their rights.

It is essential to realize that with power, great responsibility comes as well. Hence, we should never abuse animals for our benefits. As good human beings, we must always revolt against any inhumane activity that harms our fellow wild friends.

Esssay about Animals

Short Essay on Animals 150 words in English

From the beginning of human civilization, we have interacted with wildlife. Before trade and commerce existed, human life had to depend on animal resources in some places solely. Our ancestors who lived in caves and were nomads and some big animals were a threat to their life.

But eventually, they learned to fight and survive and use the skin of the animal for clothing as a layer of protection from cold, used the meat as food or bait, and also came to use ivory elements as utensils or ornaments. Now animals contribute to many more aspects like our transportation, social life, economy, etc. Hence, it is our responsibility to preserve and protect them against any abuse that is not necessary for our existence.

10 Lines on Essay on Animals in English

  • It would be a shame not to mention bees in the list of essential animals for they are the most potent pollinators in this world, and almost one-third of the world’s food source depends on pollination.
  • Dogs have been a loyal and faithful companion to man throughout their life, and they ensure physical security and emotional support as our loving pets.
  • Squirrels are responsible for growing several trees on this planet, for they often collect nuts and seeds for winter and forget the place they stored them; eventually, those seeds and nuts grow into trees and sustain our ecosystem.
  • Birds are called the ecological handyman, for they are responsible for many things like pollination, pest control, reforestation, soil fertilization, etc.
  • Elephants are called the largest mammals living on land, whereas Blue Whales are the largest animals that exist on Earth.
  • We all are aware of the importance of fishes and other aquatic animals, and firstly they maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem. They are also a source of food and have a significant contribution to our economy.
  • Giraffes initially didn’t have an as long neck as we see them now; it was because of gradual evolution that their neck lengthened so that they can reach the upper branches of trees for leaves, i.e., their food.
  • The Camel is called the ‘Ship of the desert,’ and they are highly used as a medium of transportation in dry sandy areas by humans.
  • People often mistake camels to carry water in their humps, but it is fat that is stored in the tissues of a camel’s hump. These fatty tissues help to convert into energy or water, and hence a camel can survive for almost six months without water or food.
  • Animal rights are the idea submitted by humans, which declares that some of the animals are entitled to some rights of their existence and their fundamental interests. This was introduced to reduce the exploitation of animals and stop the torture that man does to them.

Students are often asked to write an essay on Wild Animals in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Wild Animals

Introduction.

Wild animals are creatures that live freely in nature, without human intervention. They are an essential part of the ecosystem, contributing to the balance of nature.

Types of Wild Animals

Wild animals and ecosystem.

Wild animals help maintain the ecosystem. Predators control the population of other animals, while herbivores aid in plant dispersion.

Threats to Wild Animals

Wild animals face threats like habitat loss, hunting, and climate change. Protecting them is crucial for a balanced ecosystem.

250 Words Essay on Wild Animals

Wild animals are an integral part of our planet’s biodiversity. They exist in varied ecosystems, ranging from the freezing Arctic to the scorching Sahara, each species uniquely adapted to its habitat. Their survival and prosperity are crucial for maintaining ecological balance.

Role in Ecosystem

Every wild animal plays a specific role in the ecosystem. Predators control the population of herbivores, preventing overgrazing. Scavengers and decomposers aid in nutrient recycling, ensuring soil fertility. Pollinators, like bees and butterflies, are critical for plant reproduction. Thus, each species’ extinction can trigger a domino effect, disrupting this delicate balance.

Unfortunately, human activities pose substantial threats to wild animals. Habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and hunting are causing rapid biodiversity loss. Deforestation for agriculture and urbanization displaces animals, leading to conflicts with humans. Poaching for fur, ivory, or medicinal uses also threatens many species.

Conservation Efforts

To mitigate these threats, conservation efforts are underway globally. Protected areas like national parks and wildlife sanctuaries have been established, providing safe habitats for animals. Legal measures against hunting and trade of endangered species are also in place. However, these efforts need to be strengthened, and public awareness about the importance of wild animals must be increased.

500 Words Essay on Wild Animals

The vitality of wild animals.

Wild animals are an integral part of our ecosystem and biodiversity. They play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature, contributing to the health and functionality of the world’s ecosystems. These animals, each with their unique characteristics and behaviors, contribute to the diversity of life forms on Earth.

The Role of Wild Animals in Ecosystems

Wild animals have significant roles in the ecosystem. Predators help control the population of various species, preventing overpopulation and ensuring the balance of the ecosystem. Herbivores, on the other hand, contribute to the propagation of plant species by spreading seeds. Moreover, animals like bees and butterflies play a vital role in pollination, which is essential for plant reproduction.

Despite their importance, wild animals face numerous threats. Habitat loss due to urbanization, deforestation, and climate change is one of the most pressing issues. As humans continue to encroach on their habitats, these animals struggle to survive. Poaching and illegal wildlife trade also pose significant threats. Many species are hunted for their fur, horns, or other body parts, leading to a decline in their populations.

Given the threats to wild animals, conservation efforts are now more critical than ever. Governments, non-profit organizations, and individuals worldwide are implementing various strategies to protect and conserve wildlife. These include establishing and managing protected areas, enforcing anti-poaching laws, and promoting sustainable practices that minimize human impact on wildlife habitats.

The Importance of Education and Awareness

Education and awareness are key to wildlife conservation. By understanding the importance of wild animals and the threats they face, people can make informed decisions that contribute to conservation efforts. This includes adopting sustainable practices, supporting conservation organizations, and advocating for policies that protect wildlife.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Happy studying!

Bella is the name of my pet cat, and I love her white and black fur, small paws, tiny claws, and a cute little tail. Bella was a stray cat we adopted when she was just three months old. Bella does not want much attention, but she enjoys being around us. She enjoys all types of fish, and her favourite is tuna. She is either in bed or spends the entire day lying on the couch. Her way of expressing affection is unique.

My favourite animal is a dog. Dogs are known for their friendliness and loyalty, and nothing can beat a dog’s devotion to their master. These are furry creatures found in various species, such as German shepherds, Pomeranians, Labradors, and others. Even I have a pet dog whose name is Rocky, and he is a German Shepherd with golden brown fur. He enjoys being around us and is extremely friendly. When I take him for a walk, that is his favourite time of day. He enjoys meeting new people and barks at other dogs he sees in the park. We adopted him when he was five months old and he is now four years old. He tries to keep us safe and never harms us.

Cats are small creatures that humans love. They come in a variety of colours, including white, black, and brown, and their small twinkling eyes make us adore them even more. Cats are known for their dislike of human contact, but they do show affection in other ways. Lucy is the name of my cat. She enjoys eating fish, meat, mashed eggs, and many other foods. When I get home from school, she rushes up to me and starts licking my hands. She recognises my sad mood and continues to sit beside me as if she is offering me support. We play on weekends and holidays, and she has a great time.

Elephants may appear to be enormous, but they are completely harmless. They have a playful nature; I have seen them in movies and videos splashing water from their trunks. The relationship between humans and elephants has been well known for a long time. Films have also been made about them, such as Haathi Mere Saathi. I have often seen the small and adorable baby elephants running around and playing in the zoo. Elephants eat plants, leaves, fruits, etc. Elephants are some of the most intelligent creatures on Earth.

Horses are extremely powerful and swift. Despite their thin legs, they are well-known for their running speed and are frequently used in horse races. Horses are obedient and friendly. Most of us have probably seen a horse in the hilly areas where they transport people from one location to another, and soldiers previously used them to fight in wars. Horses are herbivores that eat mostly grass. They can become extremely loyal to their master if properly trained. A horse’s average lifespan is 25-30 years. However, it may differ depending on their living circumstances. I once went to a horse race and witnessed them galloping with all their might. They are also among the most beautiful animals due to their silky hair and tails.

In an Indian household, the importance of a cow cannot be neglected. Cows have been given the status of mother and are referred to as “Gau Mata” in Hindi. A cow in the house is a common sight in rural areas. Many households rely on cows for a living. Cows produce milk, which is high in calcium and protein. Cow’s milk is used to make various dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt. Cows are herbivores that primarily eat grass, husk, vegetables, and grains. Cow dung is known for its antibacterial properties and is used as plant fertiliser. My grandparents’ house has four cows. I play with and feed them whenever I visit them on vacation. They are gentle creatures. I have fun spending time with them.

India’s national animal is the tiger. They are large cats that are mostly orange with black stripes. They are known for their strength and are associated with the Goddess Durga. They are carnivores that feed on small animals such as deer and antelopes. They are commonly referred to as man-eaters but do not unnecessarily prey on humans. Tigers are often hunted for their skin, nails and bones. During my summer vacations, I went to Sunderbans with my family, which is home to a variety of tigers. The Sundarban National Park and Tiger Reserve India aim to protect endangered species of tigers from extinction. The Indian government is also doing a lot to protect tigers!

There is one long essay on animals of 500 words and one short essay of 200 words on animals.

Animals Essay

Long essay on Animals is for students of Classes 8,9 and 10 and competitive exam aspirants.

The Earth is home to many creatures. Animals have been the inhabitants of this planet, along with humans. Historically, animals were used for transportation, protection, as well as for hunting. Animals have been companions to man since time immemorial.

Animals are the kingdom while classifying their species. There are a variety of species present under this, with their presence spanning across the world. Amphibians primarily require a moist environment as they breathe and absorb through thin skins. Some amphibians include frogs, salamanders, toads, and caecilians. Mammals are vertebrates and warm-blooded. Females have mammary glands to feed their young ones and have a thick coat of fur. Mammals include carnivores, bears, rodents, etc. Reptiles are vertebrates, but lay eggs. Some of them have scales. Common reptiles are lizards, turtles, and snakes.

Insects have an exoskeleton. They have three pairs of legs, a head, thorax, and abdomen. Beetles, ants, and bees are some insects. Birds have wings, beaks, and feathers such as eagles, pigeons, crows, and sparrows. There are many species of animals that are domesticated as well, such as dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, etc.

Animals are vital to the ecosystem. Animals have different purposes when it comes to the environment. Even microorganisms help to clean our planet. Many animals aide plants to converting free nitrogen present in the air and nourishing the roots and a crucial role in sustaining ecological balance. Predatory animals keep the population in the animal population controlled. Animals that feed on plants help to control plant growth. They also provide us with the food required for our survival. Poultry, dairy, and meat serve as essentials to many cultures and their diets. Animals are one of the oldest companions of humans.

However, many species face the threat of extinction. Urbanization causes cutting down forests to meet the needs of the growing human population. Cutting down forests has led to a loss of habitat for many animals. Habitat destruction has caused damage to animal life. Lions and bears traditionally hunted for their fur, elephants for their ivory tusks, and alligators for leather sell in black markets. Torturing animals and locking them in cages affects their wellbeing. Dumping effluents into water bodies affect marine life. Global warming also affects animals, with dried up water bodies and seasonal changes that have consequences on these species. Using animals to test human-made drugs has received widespread criticism as the animals suffer irreparable damages.

The importance of conserving animals has been recognized all over the world. International organizations such as the PETA and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) aim to spread awareness on preservation. Countries have strict laws for animal conservation. The Indian government has many wildlife protection projects such as Project Tiger and Project Elephant, animals whose populations are decreasing drastically.

World Wildlife Day is commemorated on the 3rd of March every year. An initiative by the United Nations, 2020’s theme is “Sustaining all life on Earth” to meet sustainable development goals. It is vital to conserve animals as the Earth is there home as much as it is ours.

Earth is the home to many animals. They are man’s companion. Animals have various species. Amphibians have thin skin through which they absorb and breathe. Frogs and toads are some examples. Mammals have a coat of fur and warm-blooded like lions, tigers, and bears. Reptiles lay eggs and cold-blooded. Some reptiles include snakes and crocodiles. Insects and birds are a part of the animal kingdom.

Animals help our environment. They provide nutrition to the soil, and they are a source of food. Predatory animals like lions and tigers help to control the animal population. They help in agriculture as well. However, animals face the threat of extinction. Man cuts down many forests to build homes and factories while animals lose their home. Hunters torture animals and kill them for leather, fur, and ivory. Caging animals and keeping them away from their habitat affects their well-being. Water bodies polluted with harmful substances affect the animals that live in water.

We need to protect animals because the Earth is not just our home; it belongs to them as well. They are the faithful companions of man. Every year we celebrate the 3rd of March as World Wildlife Day to spread the message of protecting our animals.

Our favourite animals are those that we thoroughly love and adore. They are indeed the ones whom we admire for their appearance, behaviour, and traits. We enjoy reflecting on and discussing them. Animals display their affection in various ways, just like people do. Here are a few sample essays on “My Favourite Animal”.

My Favourite Animal Essay

100 Words Essay On My Favourite Animal

Cats are the most popular pet in families nowadays. Since they are so adorable, cats are my favourite animal. My cat is named Bella, and I like her black and white fur, tiny paws, and adorable tail. We are made to love them even more by their little glittering eyes. When Bella was only three months old, we took her in as a stray cat. Bella likes being around us even if she does not seek much attention. She likes to eat meat and various fish, with tuna being her favourite.

She comes running to me as soon as I return from school and begins licking my hands. She understands my gloomy state and keeps sitting next to me, acting as if she is trying to comfort me. She has a special way of showing affection.

200 Words Essay On My Favourite Animal

Animals are beloved of humans. One of my innermost desires is to have a pet. Pets serve as family members as well as bring joy to their people.

Why I Love Rabbits | Rabbits are my favourite animal. The pleasure of keeping rabbits as pets is in their beauty. Long ears, silky fur bodies, and jittery noses are some of their features. Rabbits also love to bite on anything and everything. They appear even cuter with their small mouths and typical chewing patterns. Fresh produce, grass, and other fruits like pineapple are some of their favourites. They like vegetables the most.

My Pet ‘Sniff’ | My pet is a rabbit named Sniff. She is white. It was a gift from my uncle. Her paws have borders that are brown, and have lovely red eyes. She is enthusiastic. After school, I meet her when I am back home, and we play. She likes coriander leaves, so when I first get awake in the morning, I feed her some. She occasionally approaches me and climbs up on my bed before I even open my eyes. I cuddle my rabbit, Sniff, and cherish my bunny beyond all others as she is my best buddy.

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Animal

Dogs are my favourite animals. Dogs are favourite animals of a lot of people, so it is common to find them kept as pets in homes. The loyalty of dogs to humans has been proven. Dogs, in my opinion, are better at understanding human emotions than other human beings. In general, dogs are wonderful friends and are incredibly devoted to us humans. They are appropriately referred to as “man’s best friend” for this reason.

Characteristics Of Dogs

Following are some general characteristics of dogs:-

The physical characteristics of dogs include four legs, two eyes, two ears, one nose, and one tail.

They come in a variety of sizes and forms, and their teeth can consume both normal food and flesh.

Doberman, German Shepherd, Labrador, and Golden Retrievers are just a few of the various breeds of dogs. Several of these breeds are intelligent and smart.

Dogs can be any one of a wide range of colours, including white, grey, brown, black, and spotted.

Dogs As Companions

Playtime with my dog is something I really enjoy. My dog and I regularly go on walks, and anytime I am upset, he comes to sit by my side and cheers me up with his adorable eyes.

The fact that dogs never hurt young children and instead adore them without condition is one of the wonderful behaviours I have observed in dogs. Even yet, they defend them against damage of any kind. Our pet friends are dependable companions that lessen our sense of isolation. They are sympathetic and empathic with us. Both as guardians and buddies, they are ideal. They are great learners since they pick up a lot of knowledge when they are trained and perform tasks in the same manner.

The police and other investigation agencies often use dogs for helping them solve mysteries and investigate.

Bones, meat, fish, and various organs are typical foods that my dog eats. Grains, vegetables, and milk are additional options. If dogs are domesticated, they should be offered a healthy diet.

Dogs’ Faithfulness

The dog is believed to be a dedicated and devoted creature. For their owner, they are loyal and loving. In the same vein, I would like to cite an example.

My Neighbourhood Dog | There was a German Shepherd dog in my locality. He was named Simba. The dog sensed the robbery that occurred in my neighbour’s home six months prior and began howling to alert the family. He did his best. Regrettably, he was seriously hurt. The fact that he continued in their fight even after suffering injuries and the robbers allegedly escaped the house was reported in the papers the following day. This shows great bravery. The way a dog stood up for someone, not even man could.

Love For Stray Dogs | I adore dogs, but it does not imply I only love dogs that have been petted. I love and care for stray dogs as much. Being unable to communicate their hunger or distress, animals nearby should be taken care of. Because of this, we should respect and care for the animals in our vicinity and show responsibility. They are an integral part of our environment.

My Favourite Animal – Essay 1

Introduction.

Humans are fond of animals. With some of the significant dreams in life, owning a pet is also one. Pets are not only a sense of happiness, but they also prove to be a family member.

Though there are several dangerous species, humans adopt the ones that are among the least dangerous. People train their pets. The training is given by either the owner himself or someone virtuoso. It helps them to behave as similar to humans and even to be more familiar with human life.

Let us see some of my favorite animals. Those like the animals a lot, but dogs, rabbits, and horses are my favorite ones.

My Favourite Animal – Dogs

To start the list with the most common pet which I believe in. The dog comes first. Dogs are a sense of security and love for humans. Some people opt for dogs because of their wealthy lifestyle, some to increase their security. However, for some, it is the sense of love.

My favorite animal is a dog. I love dogs because they are very loyal. They have very soft skin, and I love to move my hand on their furry body.

I still remember the day when my father gifted me with a dog. It was my 10th birthday, and on that birthday, my father gave me such a precious gift.

I like to have fun with my dog. I usually play with him, and when I am sad, he sits by my side, and that makes me happy.

Dogs have a sense of love, are food friends, and are smart investigators. Investigation Department keeps Dogs as a security agent to find a critical solution to a problem. Dogs are too smart that they catch up the things very quickly.

Dogs with intelligent power are trained and used by the police and army to smell the traces of criminals and, in the investigation, work either indoor or outdoor.

Dogs are among those rare pets who do not care for their own life when serving their master. They are ready to die in a hard situation just to save their master’s life.

When we talk about the fooding habits of Dogs, they usually love to eat meat, fruits, fish, rice, bread, and other eatables.

All these capabilities of dogs make me love them so much.

My Favourite Animal – Rabbit

My favorite animal is Rabbit. Rabbits are so beautiful that people like to keep them as their pets. For some houses, Rabbits are the center of attraction.

They have long ears, soft furry body, and twitchy noses. Rabbits also love to chew on everything. With such smallmouth and their regular chewing habits, it seems even cuter.

Their favorite fruit includes fresh vegetables, grass, and some fruits like pineapple.

When we talk about their sleeping habits, Rabbits usually sleep during day and night and are awake at the time of dawn and dusk.

My Favourite Animal – Horses

Another capable animal who is always ready to take on the fear is Horse.

We often talk about dogs when it comes to training and security. However, Horses are also capable of helping humans in those tough times.

Though horses are not as intelligent, they are as fast as the wind, in some situations. People may ride on the back of horses either to cover a certain distance or to fulfill their habits.

I love horses because there is a real example of bravery. In past times, horses were used in battles to chase the enemy or to kill them.

On the other hand, horse riding is another luxury habit nowadays. People are fond of horse riding, and they even keep them as a pet at the homes.

Love for horses will never end because of its friendly nature. It is beneficial and useful to human society. Like all other big animals, i.e., camel and elephant, horses are also used t carry loads. Horses are beautiful and brilliant creatures. Their highly bushy tails always mesmerize everyone and is a center os attention.

Horses are of many colors like white, black, brown, golden, burgundy, or a mix of any two of these. It is a tall animal and comes under the mammal category.

If you own a horse, you will realize how quick this mammal is. Horses are very aware and alert of the surroundings. In addition, when we about its power, horses have a majesty body, which is so powerful that it can even break the door within seconds.

Horses are known around the world for their sharp memory and intelligent power. Along with being a smart animal, horses are a real example of calmness. They genuinely love peace and harmony.

You ever wondered how horses are too fast! The durable and long limbs of horses help them to speed up as fast as possible and to travel distance within a short period.  Because of their strength and endurance, they are used to fight wars. We can consider them as the right worriers.

They are considered as a symbol of royalty because of their beauty,

Along with their features, god also has provided them with an add on advantage of universal shoes. These shoes help them to run on any kind of surface, i.e., either uneven or plain.

To sum up, horses are fore – footed gentle domestic animal. They can be tamed easily with polite nature.

With thousands of species around the globe, these are few which can be trained and treated a friend. It is made possible just because of the nature and intelligence power of the animal.

Humans are considered as the wonderful creatures made by god. Animals also lie in the same bracket. When tamed and treated properly, both the humans and the animals could be of great use.

However, we should be well aware of these animals. This is true that they are helpful and friendly, but sometimes, because of diseases and disorders, they may harm their master. Though this is too rare to happen, the precautions taken in advance are of great importance.

Be aware and treat well! We have got wonderful gifts from god.

Describe an Animal [IELTS Speaking]

Posted by David S. Wills | May 10, 2016 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 0

Describe an Animal [IELTS Speaking]

In part 2 of the IELTS speaking test, you could be asked to describe many different things, from people to charites to places . You could even be asked to describe an animal .

In this lesson, I will show you how to do that by giving you some advice on interpreting the cue card, picking the right language, and then making effective notes in order to give a great answer. I will end this with my own sample band 9 answer, which you can hear in the following video:

The Cue Card: Describe an Animal

First of all, be aware that there are millions of potential IELTS cue cards because every topic could have a vast array of variations. You would not just be asked to “describe an animal” in each situation. It might be a certain type of animal: a pet , a wild animal, a cute animal, an animal you like, and so on. I have even covered a cue card before that asked you to describe an animal in your country . Thus, you have to read the cue card carefully.

Today, we will look at this cue card:

Describe your favourite animal. You should say – what it is – where it lives – what it eats and explain why you like it.

The important thing to consider here is that you must really like this animal. Even if you hate animals for some reason, you should at least pretend you like one. Pick something that you can describe easily, then explain why it is your favourite.

This might sound obvious, but in the pressure of an exam situation, people often make silly mistakes like changing their ideas halfway through the animal. You might, for example, start talking about a tiger but then later mention that your favourite animals are dogs. This would be a problem.

As for the bullet points, they are there to guide you and help you to talk for at least one minute. You don’t really have to answer all of these, but you should certainly try.

Vocabulary for Describing Animals

When it comes to describing animals for IELTS, there are of course many different words you could use and it’s better to think about one specific type or group of animals rather than just learning “animal vocabulary.” Think about it: would you use the same words to describe a blue whale, a cockroach, and a monkey? Not really.

animal vocabulary for ielts

Instead, perhaps it is better to learn vocabulary in groups of words:

Habitat (ie where an animal lives)The sea, the forest, the jungle, the rainforest, the desert, gardens, hedgerows, the polar regions, the tundra
Its physical sizeEnormous, tiny, about the size of a common dog, not much bigger than a mouse, huge, little, pocket-sized, microscopic, almost as big as a horse
Its skin/coatRough, furry, hairy, shaggy, smooth, slimy, scaly, coarse, silky, soft, feathers
Physical featuresA pointy nose, pointed ears, floppy ears, stripes, a long tail, short legs, big eyes, fangs, eight legs
PersonalityFriendly, fierce, wild, mysterious, graceful, affectionate, aggressive, cold, inspiring, silly

Obviously, this list could have gone on and on. However, as I mentioned before, your description will totally depend on the animal you want to describe.

One great way of learning vocabulary is to Google the animal you want to talk about, then pick some words from the links that pop up. Wikipedia is a great source, but any major website written by native speakers of English or professional English-language writers would work. For example:

describing an animal essay

This website is run by Cornell University and is a great resource for bird vocabulary if you want to talk about birds. However, please note that in descriptions like this, whilst the words are useful, they sometimes use shortened forms that are non-grammatical. Thus, you might be better off with Wikipedia, or else confirm your new vocabulary by searching specifically for those terms. You can put them into Ludwig , for example, if you want to see more sample sentences.

Making Notes

When you are given a cue card, you will have one minute to make notes to help you give your answer. Don’t waste this time writing full sentences, but instead note down some ideas, vocabulary, or structure that you think might help.

Honestly, though it is tempting to write as much as possible, it’s better to spend this time thinking and just note a couple of words. If there’s a really great word you want to use, write it down, but perhaps ideas are better. Even I, an IELTS tutor, sometimes forget the things I want to talk about, so I would personally note down ideas to come back to later in my description.

Also, I do recommend that you start your answer with a personal story or memory. That’s because this allows you to build naturally from there, instead of giving an artificial beginning and then trying to add detail after detail in an awkward way. This approach is explained here:

Sample Band 9 Answer

I have always loved animals and ever since I was a child I have had a particular fondness for rhinos, or rhinoceros as it is properly known. These are found in many countries around the world, although unfortunately it is an endangered species and so its numbers are generally decreasing. You can find rhinos across Africa, including South Africa and Zimbabwe, as well as throughout Asia, in places like Northeast India and Nepal. Typically they live in grasslands because they subsist on a diet of grasses and leaves. I like rhinos a lot because they are quite gentle and trusting animals, and I feel a great deal of sympathy for them. They have lived on this planet for millions of years but humans are now hunting them to extinction. Their gentle, peaceful way of life should be an inspiration for us; not something we take advantage of in order to kill them. I hope that we are able to avoid driving them to extinction and then move towards restoring their habitat and increasing their numbers so that they can thrive once again in the future, but that does not look likely as the human population grows and climate change worsens.

Notes on the Answer

I used some good phrases here that might help you:

  • it is an endangered species
  • You can find rhinos across Africa
  • Typically they live in grasslands
  • they subsist on a diet of grasses
  • hunting them to extinction
  • Their gentle, peaceful way of life
  • move towards restoring their habitat

You may be thinking that this answer was quite short, and you are right. However, remember that you should not speak too quickly in the IELTS speaking test, particularly for part 2. Not only will speaking quickly make you slip up with more errors, but also you will run through all of your ideas and have to say more and more. If you keep a good pace, you can give error-free sentences and spread your ideas out over a longer period so that you don’t have to cram dozens of ideas into your answer or repeat yourself.

If you want some more vocabulary related to rhinos, you can check out this reading exercise that I made many years ago.

HELPING TEACHERS INSPIRE COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS, PEOPLE & THE ENVIRONMENT

Animal Descriptions

By using adjectives and similes, students will describe and then draw images of animals while gaining an appreciation for how description evokes imagery., describing animals.

Each student writes out the physical description of an animal as accurately and detailed as possible, without naming the animal. It can be any animal they choose, in any kind of environment – e.g., a service dog at work, pet cat lying in a sunny spot, hippo in a zoo, or horse in a field. As part of their research prior to writing, they should find a picture of the animal to work from so they can include all the details.

Alternatively, if given as a homework assignment, they could have one of their own animals ‘model’ for them.

After all students have written their descriptions, have them switch papers. Each student now reads the paragraph and draws the animal described.

On the back of the drawing, student write their answers to the following questions

  • Which part of the description was most helpful in identifying the animal?
  • What could have been added to make it easier to draw the animal?

Student then take turns reading the paragraph aloud and let the rest of the class determine if the drawing matches the description. Next, have them examine their drawings to see if they included anything that was NOT described in the paragraph. Discuss the fact that people often refer to their own experiences and add to the description without even realizing it.

Example (paragraph written by a student)

The largest creature I have ever seen was an immense, grey animal with bristly hair. The hair was wide-spaced so you could see its mottled grey skin. Its tail was flat and was also covered in this bristly hair with a black tuft at the end. Its huge, flat ears were shaped kind of like Africa and often flapped side to side to keep this massive animal cool. A small, black eye was located on either side of its somewhat rounded face. A long, hose-like nose reached down to four round white toe-nailed feet. Two curved, lance-sized tusks protruded on either side of its trunk. It took four thick legs to support this house-sized mammoth!

Essay on Zoo for Students and Children

500 words essay on zoo.

The world is a huge place to see. It consists of so many living organisms that it is impossible to see each and every one of them. Especially for human beings, who are fascinated very much by animals. For the same reasons, zoos were created so that humans can interact better with animals.

Essay on Zoo

In other words, a zoo is a facility that has animals, birds, and reptiles of all kinds. They are confined to space where they are given food and medical facilities. The government has given strict guidelines to maintain a zoo. This is done keeping in mind the animal’s safety. In addition, zoos are made breeding grounds for animals to protect their species.

Benefits of Zoo

Zoos were made to bring wildlife closer to humans. It gave humans a better and up-close view of them. This allows various researchers and scientists to note the behavioral pattern of the animals. It helps them in their studies and discover new things.

In addition, zoos are a great source of entertainment for kids. They love visiting zoos and interacting with animals. This helps them learn practical knowledge about the animal. It also gives them exposure to wildlife and widens their knowledge.

Furthermore, zoos give us easy access to rare animals. Had it not been for zoos, we would have never been able to see what some animals looked like. We enjoy their behavior and it also creates awareness about the extinction of the rare species.

Similarly, zoos are a safe breeding ground for animals. They ensure the animal breeds so they never go extinct. This helps in creating a good balance. Moreover, the zoos ensure the animals get all the nutrition in their bodies to lead a healthy life. This is beneficial as the animal may not get guaranteed meals in the forests.

Disadvantages of Zoo

While the zoo is a great place for entertainment, it is also very exploitive. It takes advantage of the poor animals to make a profit off them. The zoos keep animals in very bad conditions. It takes unethical methods just to create revenue.

Furthermore, zoos are very unfair to animals. They take the animals out of their natural habitats just for the sake of human entertainment. Why would the animals be put into cages as humans want them to? They are voiceless creatures who are being forced to live in poor conditions. Imagine putting humans into cages so animals could come to see them. It sounds inhumane the other way around but not when we do the same to animals.

Most importantly, zoos do not take proper care of exotic animals. They bring them over in their facility despite knowing that they cannot survive in that climate. Some zoos do not take enough precautionary measures to keep the animals safe. This has resulted in so many deaths of animals that it seems cruel.

In short, though zoos are very helpful to humans and animals to an extent. They must be monitored constantly to ensure the animals are safe. The unethical zoos must be shut down at once to prevent any further loss of animals.
