Jesse Rumball-Smith - testimonial

I just wanted to say thank you for such a great and free service, all the other grammar checkers and writing assistants I have tried don’t have nearly the depth of features let alone all available on a free subscription. As a student with little income available I am extremely grateful that unlike all others companies you don’t limit features on the free plan. This is a fantastic product and given the income I would definitely upgrade to the premium. I've let all my fellow students know about Trinka as it is seriously a life saver.

Having great ideas and conducting significant research is a necessary part of the process, however, it’s not the only component of writing a good thesis.

An excellent academic thesis clearly expresses the unique ideas and insights of the student using proper punctuation, good grammar, and accurate spelling.

These things alone are enough to overwhelm any student but your teachers and professors will give you good grades on this.

Online Thesis Grader to Level up the Quality of Your Academic Writing

Online Thesis Grader to Level up the Quality of Your Academic Writing

Thesis Grader

As a Master’s or Ph.D. student, writing thesis papers can be time-consuming but equally satisfying once because it helps express your confidence in your belief. Unfortunately, submitting your thesis paper before you get rid of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors can drastically affect your credibility and authority.

thesis check grammar

Editing is critical in a thesis paper, although many students forget this important stage due to the overwhelming workload. Imagine having spent countless weeks researching and writing your thesis paper only to realize that you scored a super-low grade because it was littered with mistakes.

The good news is that our thesis fixer can help you detect and correct all the grammar and punctuation mistakes in your work. It works by crawling through your entire work sentence by sentence checking for improper word usage and sentence structure, poorly placed punctuation, and any other esoteric errors.

But before we show you how to grade a dissertation using our tool, let’s take a look at the importance of editing your thesis paper.

Importance of Editing Your Work Using a Thesis Grader

There are many reasons why you should be super-dialed in editing your thesis paper. And that includes:

To get rid of grammatical & punctuation errors

As earlier indicated, a minor typo error has the potential to completely alter the meaning of a sentence, ultimately ruining your credibility as an author. This is especially true when you are writing an original thesis paper, whereby you have limited sources to quote from.

To check adherence with formatting & referencing styles

Failing to adhere to the required formatting and referencing styles is highly punishable in academic work. References show that your work is backed by credible sources, as well as give a clear direction on how it is interpreted. By editing your work, you ensure that it conforms to the prerequisite format and style sheet, avoiding any potential problems with your professor

To streamline the structure & flow

Thesis papers are meant to solve or study particular problems in society. As such, they should have a solid structure and logical flow. And this can only be achieved by identifying and fixing any gaps in your arguments through editing.

To check language & phrases

Unlike in article writing where terminologies aren’t particularly crucial, academic writing is particularly strict on this aspect. A particular word may have a different meaning in a different academic field, and you don’t want your readers to read it out of context. For this reason, editing your work helps ensure that you use all the terminologies appropriately throughout your work.

Useful Tips to Grade Your Academic Work & How a Thesis Fixer Can Help

There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your academic work, some of them are taught in class as part of your course while some aren’t. Below, we have prepared a list of useful tips to help to grade your essay, thesis, or even dissertation paper.

why dissertation grammar check is so important

Pay attention to the initial brief

When grading your thesis paper, the very first thing markers examine is whether you have adhered to the initial brief. The initial brief entails things such as the thesis type, content focus, subject, formatting, and the word limit. For this reason, it is important to thoroughly go through your essay brief before you begin writing.

A properly crafted thesis paper should have a clear sense of structure. A structure is like a template upon which your message is premised, and it includes the introduction, main body, and conclusion. By getting the structure of your paper right, you are assured of creating a great thesis paper.

thesis check grammar

Show your knowledge and understanding of the topic

The only way your professor can assess your understanding of a topic is by seeing whether you have your facts right, how well you have linked different aspects in your thesis, and how articulate your arguments are.  Often, most students tend to cram as many details as they can into a single sentence or paragraph. Unfortunately, this is counterproductive as it may blur or water down the most important arguments in your thesis. To avoid this, ensure everything is laid out in plain terms.

Ensure there are no grammatical and spelling errors

You could have the best thesis in your class. However, spelling and grammatical errors will render your efforts completely useless. The markers are usually examining different mechanisms of English like punctuation, spelling, grammar, and sentence structure.

Along with that, they will be checking stylistic elements such as the formatting, style, and whether your work is easy to read in general. With the help of our thesis grammar checker, you will easily identify and correct all the above-mentioned errors before submitting your work.

Common Errors That Our Thesis Rater Can Help Fix

Finding spelling and grammatical errors in your thesis is difficult, even if you are a professional proofreader. However, our online tool is very good at identifying grammatical, punctuation, diction, stylistic, and factual errors.

Here are key issues that our thesis grammar corrector will help you identify and correct:

mistakes to fix with thesis rater

  • Typos . Did you mean to type the word morning but instead typed monrning? Our online tool will never let such a silly mistake escape your bare eyes.
  • Punctuation . Punctuation is easily one of the hardest things to master in writing. Nevertheless, if left unchecked, a simple punctuation mark can change the entire meaning of a sentence in your work. If you are unsure of what punctuation mark to use, let our online dissertation proofreading and editing tool help determine where you need to insert that comma, apostrophe, or any other punctuation symbol.
  • Passive voice . In writing, using an active voice to explain your ideas is generally better compared to using a passive voice. With our grammar checker, you can check the number of passive words used in your thesis and adjust accordingly.
  • Overused words . Our thesis grammar checker will also identify overused words in your work and suggest alternative words, making your work richer.
  • Plagiarism. Along with checking for syntax errors in dissertation or thesis, our tool also doubles as a plagiarism detector. It compares your thesis against billions of web pages and academic databases to see whether parts of your work are published, allowing you to make the changes in advance.

Using our Thesis Grader Vs Manual Editing

Along with identifying a plethora of spelling and grammatical errors, using our thesis checker online free tool comes with multiple other benefits compared to manual editing. They include;

Our tool produces faster and almost instantaneous results.Unlike our automated tool, a human editor can several weeks edit your work.
Our tool is built with AI and NLP technologies to ensure that it catches different types of mistakes, as well as learn new words depending on usage. Manually editing your thesis can lead to reduced efficiency, because it entails going through the same work over and over again.
Mostly free.Unless you are doing the editing personally, the cost of hiring a professional editor is pretty significant.
As well as identifying grammatical, spelling, and spelling errors in your work, our online paper grader helps improve your language by giving you alternate word suggestions. The learning opportunities in manual self-editing are limited because you have to figure out the next best word to use without any help.

Personalized Writing Help When You Need it

Unintentional plagiarism, grammar mistakes, and uncited sources  can turn what you thought was a good paper into a poor one. When you’re writing a paper the last thing you want is for your message to get lost due to incorrect punctuation or confusing sentence structure. You know that the great ideas in your head would make for a standout paper, if only you could get them written clearly on the page. If this struggle sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Great ideas may be an essential part of high-quality writing, but they’re not the only component. Excellent papers and essays clearly express strong ideas with good grammar, proper punctuation, spot-on spelling, and thorough, careful citations. While this may sound like a lot, your teachers and professors are grading you on your skills as both a writer and a researcher, which means your assignments will require an ethical and attentive approach. Luckily, there is no shortage of available tools to help you along your way.

You could use a plagiarism checker free, though, these tools often lack grammatical support. Given the high stakes and rigorous requirements, the aid of a plagiarism checker without the needed support of a grammar checker could mean the difference between an “A” paper and a “C” or even “D” paper.

Thankfully, the EasyBib Plus plagiarism tool provides all-in-one support to cover all your bases. Our premium essay checker is convenient, easy to use, and includes access to a grammar and spell checker, plus a plagiarism checker. With a single scan, you’ll receive personalized feedback to help identify potentially missing citations and help improve your sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and more.

Not sure if that noun is spelled correctly, or if the preposition at the end of your sentence is grammatically correct? The EasyBib Plus plagiarism tool is your one-stop shop to help check plagiarism, get grammatical suggestions, correct spelling and punctuation errors, and help create polished papers you can be proud to turn in. And, we haven’t told you the best part yet: you can try our tool free and scan your work for grammar suggestions right now!

A Grammar Check for Peace of Mind

You know that grammar plays a significant role in your assignments. Not only does it factor into your overall grade, but without clear and precise language, your ideas can lose their impact or might even be misunderstood entirely. Still, with so many different parts of speech and rules to learn and apply, it’s not uncommon to get them mixed up and find yourself questioning your knowledge now and again:

Can you use an adverb to modify a noun? (No. You need an adjective for that.)

Well, can you use it to modify a pronoun ? (Still no.)

What do they modify, then? (Almost everything else. Fun, right?)

Ugh. (That was an interjection .)

Does this have to be so difficult? (Nope!)

Scanning your paper with the EasyBib Plus writing tool delivers more than the basic punctuation and spell check functions that come standard in word processing programs. You’ll receive immediate, targeted feedback that can help improve the sentence structure and style of your writing. Not only can this help ensure that you don’t lose points off your grade for grammatical errors such as mismatched verb tense, but it can also help to clarify your meaning and strengthen your arguments by eliminating confusing punctuation and run-on sentences that confuse readers.

Reviewing your work to correct errors and refine the flow of your writing is a critical part of the revision process for novices and novelists alike. Even the most conscientious of wordsmiths might make mistakes, such as using a conjunctive adverb in place of a coordinating conjunction or pairing a plural determiner with an uncountable word. They likely appreciate a subscription-based or free grammar check as much as a beginning writer. That’s why the EasyBib Plus writing tool is designed for all writers, from students who are still learning the fundamentals to published professionals who get paid by the word.

The EasyBib Plus writing tool provides quick, targeted feedback that you can use to help improve your writing immediately. Also, our free resource library is available 24/7, just like the rest of our tools, to help you brush up on the areas that challenge you the most (Conjunctive what? Uncountable who?) That means you can continue to sharpen your skills and improve your writing over time, which will help make finishing your next project easier.

Ready to give your paper a boost? Sign up for EasyBib Plus or scan a paper right now for a free spell check—it’s easy!Just upload or copy and paste your paper to the online grammar check tool and, in a matter of seconds, you’ll be able to receive up to 5 feedback cards so you can begin polishing your draft.

Why is Grammar So Important, Anyway?

Why is grammar important? As long as others know what you mean, does it really matter if you use proper grammar? These are age-old questions, but the answers remain unchanged. Grammar is important for many reasons:

Communication:  Communication is about more than merely listening and talking. We communicate in myriad ways: with our voices, our mannerisms, our facial expressions, our actions, and frequently, our written words. Written communication is just as important as all the other ways we broadcast our thoughts and feelings. Unlike our other communication methods, though, written communication leaves a record. While most of us relax our style when talking to or texting friends, the fact remains that more formal venues require a more formal tone. Proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation are a necessary element of professional and academic writing, so running your work through a spelling and grammar check before you submit it is an absolute must.

Clarity:  Expressing your thoughts, ideas, and opinions is an uphill battle when you communicate them with less-than-stellar punctuation, spelling, and grammar. A missing or misplaced comma, for example, can entirely change your meaning:

  • Call me Ishmael = My name is Ishmael.
  • Call me, Ishmael = I want Ishmael to call me.

Spelling errors can result in similarly muddled meaning:

  • Her shoes perfectly complemented her dress. = Her shoes and dress go well together.
  • Her shoes perfectly complimented her dress. = Her shoes can both speak and engage in flattery.

Grammar deficiencies such as a dangling modifier yield similarly confusing results:

  • I saw the girl’s purple backpack in the library. = The purple backpack belonging to the girl is in the library; I saw it.
  • I saw the purple girl’s backpack in the library. = You know the girl who mysteriously turned purple? I saw her backpack in the library. This week has not been easy on her.

Credibility: Establishing your credibility is critical whether you’re writing for school or business. Proving that you can reliably communicate using proper grammar is essential to establishing and maintaining the trust of your teachers, professors, readers, customers, and colleagues.

What Happens After I Upload My Paper?

Once you upload a paper, the EasyBib Plus grammar checker scans your text and highlights grammar issues within your document so you can see it in context. For users running a grammar check and spell check using the grammar check free tool, up to the first 5 issues are shown. For subscription subscribers, all of the areas that require your review will be highlighted once the scan is complete.

No matter which version of the tool you’re using, your feedback will include detailed explanations so you can understand why the text was flagged. Other highlighted areas will include examples of how the issues can be fixed. Some will include a detailed explanation as to why the issue was flagged. This personalized feedback allows you to make an educated decision about whether to edit your text or dismiss the suggestion, so you’re always in control of your final draft.

Subscription users also have the plagiarism checker at their disposal when scanning their papers for style and grammar suggestions. Just as with our other writing tools, when you use the tool to check plagiarism, changes are never made without your review, so you are always in the driver’s seat. You can review each highlighted area as well as the sources of matching text and will always be given a choice to either accept or ignore both citation and grammar suggestions.

Check for Unintentional Plagiarism

Persistent use of the best grammar checker and spell checker you can find will help to shape up the style and substance of your composition. However, to ensure the integrity of your work and root out unintentional instances of academic dishonesty, you’ll also need to incorporate a subscription-based or free plagiarism checker for students.

The ability to scan your paper and check plagiarism and grammar before submitting your work is an invaluable tool for students. It’s so valuable, in fact, that students are not the only ones who consistently use this type of software.

Many teachers and professors use a service to ensure that student papers are original and include properly formatted and sourced citations for all reference materials. For some, this may be a consistent element of their grading process, while others may utilize one only when they feel there is a reason to do so.

What Exactly Does a Plagiarism Checker Do?

If you’ve used an online plagiarism checker before, you may be familiar with the process that these tools employ. For those who have never used one, it can be helpful to understand how these tools work and what you should expect as a result of using one.

The most basic free tools will scan your paper and provide you with a percentage that indicates how much of your work is original. This feature can be useful to a point, as some instructors and institutions set a percentage for the amount of similar text that is considered acceptable. This policy does not mean that they are lenient about academic dishonesty but, instead, that they recognize that similar or even matching word choice is not always an indicator of copying.

However, some schools do not tolerate any form of incremental plagiarism, period. In these institutions, “check paper for plagiarism” is likely a standard action when grading all papers.

With a free plagiarism checker, the percentage of word-for-word plagiarism in your text may be the only feedback you receive. Moreover, some of these providers may wade in unethical waters, and offer essay writing services in conjunction with their checking services. This is why many students and teachers prefer subscription-based checkers that focus on integrity, such as the EasyBib writing tools.

With our premium tools, you get more than just supporting proof that your paper is original and in your own words. Your writing is scanned for potentially matching text and areas that needs your attention is highlighted. We’ll provide you with the source of the matching text so you can review it and decide how to proceed. If you agree that a citation is needed, our citation tools and resources will provide you with the information you need to help format and insert the new sources in your text as well as your works cited page.

How Does the EasyBib Plus Online Plagiarism Checker Work?

The EasyBib Plus writing tool provides an all-in-one spell check, grammar review, and plagiarism checker that not only helps you with the paper you’re writing now but enables you to gain new knowledge and improve your writing for the future, too.

Our essay checker searches online for phrases, sentences, or passages that are similar to those in your paper. If it returns matching text, this may indicate that you have passages that are missing citations.

Just as with many checkers, our tool will tell you how many instances of matching text it finds in your paper. Our plagiarism tool is designed to do more than most free tools, however.

When a portion of your paper is flagged for review, we provide you with the source that it matches. As with our online spell check tool, you have the power to review each area and choose how to proceed. If you decide to cite the flagged text, you can review the suggested source and access our citation tools to help create a proper citation and start building a bibliography for your paper. Or, you may determine that no citation is needed, in which case it’s simple to dismiss the suggestion and continue to the next section.

If you’re unsure about how to proceed, our library of resources can help you learn more and make an educated decision. In this way, you gain more than just the ability to correct your work; over time, you can learn how to avoid plagiarism altogether.

Reasons Your Teacher May Run Your Paper Through a Plagiarism Detector

As stated previously, your teachers and professors grade papers with a fixed process that includes “check paper for plagiarism” as a standard, across-the-board action. Others may check for plagiarism only when they feel there is cause to do so. There are a few red flags that may stand out to them while reviewing a paper that would lead to their running a plagiarism check, including:

Style/Voice:  Most teachers are familiar with the style and voice that you use in your writing. While most will hope that the feedback they provide when grading your work will help you to improve problem areas over time, a paper or essay that has a dramatically different style or voice than the work you’ve previously submitted can be a red flag.

Inconsistency:  Changes in the font, font size, formality, formatting, and more may indicate that portions of a paper have been copied and pasted. If these inconsistent passages are not presented as quotations or don’t include citations, this may further indicate to your teacher that there’s plagiarism in the paper.

Old References:  Part of a well-researched paper is verifying the legitimacy and relevance of your sources. While some older references may be acceptable depending on the topic, if all of your sources are outdated, it may lead your teacher to believe that you’ve recycled your own work or someone else’s.

What is Plagiarism?

If you’re looking for a free online plagiarism checker , you’re already aware that it’s not something you want to be found in your papers. However, you may still be wondering: what does plagiarism mean? It’s a reasonable question and one that merits exploring. After all, some of the actions and circumstances that fall within the plagiarism definition come as a surprise to those who only learn that they’ve committed them after it’s too late.

So what is plagiarism? To define plagiarism in the most basic sense, you might say that it is taking someone else’s ideas and words and passing them off as your own.

If your goal is avoiding plagiarism entirely, you’ll need to go beyond the basics to thoroughly define plagiarism, recognize it, and keep clear of it. Some examples of plagiarism that students find surprising include forgotten citations, poor paraphrasing, and re-submitting your own work in whole or in part for more than one assignment. This useful article provides more help in recognizing and understanding the different forms that academic dishonesty can take.

Of course, using your own words and ideas does not count as plagiarism, nor does using common knowledge . Basically, common knowledge is information that is well known by the average person. Examples of common knowledge:

  • there are 12 months in a year
  • the freezing point of Celsius is zero degrees
  • Socrates was a Greek philosopher

So should you only include your original thoughts and common knowledge in your papers? Of course not! Research-based assignments are meant to demonstrate your skills as a researcher, after all, as well as your ability to build upon the work of others to formulate new ideas. To avoid accidentally committing an act that falls within the plagiarism definition when you’re using another person’s words or ideas, though, you need to give them proper credit. This means you’ll need to clearly identify direct quotations or properly paraphrase them when including them in your paper.

Regardless of your approach, you’ll also need to cite your sources according to the style your professor specifies. Generally, you will use MLA format for the arts and humanities and APA format for the sciences, but it’s always best to check with your instructor when you’re unsure.

If you know what style to use but still aren’t sure how to create your citations, don’t fret! Our library of resources includes free guides to help you learn about various styles so you can properly structure and place them. And our premium tools not only help you check grammar, spelling, and originality in your papers, but subscribers also enjoy access to our citation creation tools!

What are the Different Types of Plagiarism?

In addition to the question “what is plagiarism,” you may also be wondering, “why do students plagiarize?” While some students do intentionally plagiarize because they believe they can pass off someone else’s work as their own to avoid spending time on their assignments, many others do so accidentally. They may not understand how broad the plagiarism definition is or they haven’t learned how to research and cite their sources properly. That is why it is vital to recognize plagiarism in all of its forms if you wish to ensure the integrity of your work.

Examples of plagiarism & How to prevent it

Direct plagiarism:

Intentionally copying another person’s work without including a citation that gives credit to the source. When most students are asked to identify potential plagiarism examples and behaviors, this direct and deliberate act is what they think of first.

  • Prevention: If you use an idea or quote from another source, cite it in the text. Make it clear that it was not your own words.

Incremental plagiarism:

Copying parts of another person’s work, such as phrases, sentences, or paragraphs without crediting the source. When deciding which tools to use to check a paper for plagiarism , instructors often seek out those that will identify incremental forms as well as instances of direct copying and similar phrasing.

  • Prevention : Decide to either directly quote the phrases or sentences you want to use, or write a good paraphrase. In both cases, be sure to add a citation. Using a plagiarism checker could also help you identify problematic passages.

Self-plagiarism:

Academic self-plagiarism occurs when a student submits the same paper or parts of a paper for more than one assignment. When your instructors are grading your papers, they’re assessing your research and writing skills in the present. When you submit work that you completed in the past, they are both unable to evaluate your current skills and unaware that you haven’t completed the assignment.

  • Prevention: Write a new paper for each assignment you’re assigned. If you feel strongly that your past work could enhance your new paper, speak to your instructor and ask for permission first.

Misleading citations:

Including a citation for a quote or idea that misrepresents the source material. This can occur if a student does not understand the reference they are citing; if a student includes a citation for a disreputable source; or the source material simply does not align with the idea or argument that the student has attributed to it.

  • Prevention: Carefully review your assignment to understand it. As you research, take the time to evaluate each source notes . Remember, it’s better to have quality citations over an abundance of citations.

Invented sources:

If a reference in a student’s bibliography is found not to exist, it is considered an invented source. This may occur if a student couldn’t find a reputable source to back their argument, or if they needed to include additional references to meet the requirements of the assignment and chose to take an unethical shortcut rather than completing the required amount of research. No matter the reason, this behavior ultimately hurts them in the long run. Not only will they fail to gain the experience they need to conduct research in the future properly, but they’ll also experience significant consequences if they’re caught.

  • Prevention: Set aside time to do proper research so you can find enough sources. Start creating a list of sources as you’re researching and take good notes. This will help you keep track of your sources so none are forgotten. If you do end up forgetting where a quote came from, a paper checker could help you pinpoint the original source.

Patchwriting/Spinning:

Patchwriting is often confused with paraphrasing, but there’s a significant difference. When you paraphrase, you demonstrate that you understand the topic well enough to restate it in your own words. When you patchwrite or spin, it is more akin to a word-swapping game; there’s no need to understand the subject, merely to have access to a thesaurus so you can substitute enough synonyms to mask the source material. This can be intentional, but it may also be a result of having a poor understanding of how to paraphrase.

  • Prevention: Using your own words, write down the key points of the phrase or idea, and put them together in a sentence. Be sure to include a citation as well.

A good way to test if you’re patchwriting or paraphrasing is to remove your sources from view. If you can write about what you’ve read without looking at the source material, you likely understand it well enough to paraphrase it. If you have to review the source material with each new sentence or consult a thesaurus while writing about it (except when you’re adding direct quotations), you may be spinning your sources instead of paraphrasing them.

Academic Integrity Policies and Statements

If you’re still uncertain about what counts as plagiarism, look for your school’s/ organization’s policies on academic integrity and plagiarism. The policies of academic institutions usually cover what is considered plagiarism, the consequences of committing it, and how to avoid it. One great example is Purdue University’s Academic Integrity statement .

What are the Consequences of Plagiarism?

No matter the setting, plagiarism is not taken lightly, and the consequences can be significant. For a good reason, too! Whether in an academic or professional setting, the plagiarism consequences reflect the seriousness of the act, which is ultimately a form of theft that hurts everyone involved.

Just as with the theft of a tangible object, there can be legal punishments for plagiarism. It is, after all, a form of copyright infringement in many instances. A quick search for plagiarism articles will reveal that professional instances of intellectual theft have resulted in civil lawsuits and can even be criminally prosecuted under rare circumstances. In addition to the possible legal consequences, professionals may lose their jobs or have to start over in a new field after their acts of fraud are uncovered.

As a student, you’re likely to wonder what happens if you plagiarize in college or high school. While there will almost always be consequences for this behavior, there is no one-size-fits-all plagiarism sentence. Depending on the circumstances, academic dishonesty could result in outcomes such as:

  • You might get a zero for the assignment in which the infringement occurred.
  • You may receive a failing grade for the class. If it is a required course, this could leave you without enough credits to move on to the next level until you can repeat it and, in some instances, postpone graduation.
  • You may be expelled from your school or university.

The academic dishonesty may be noted on your transcript, which can lead to you not getting into your preferred college, graduate school, or Ph.D. program in the future.

Nobody wants to be known as a fraud or to have a reputation for dishonesty follow them through their career. And, given the consequences that can extend beyond just their reputation, it’s no wonder that professional and academic writers who wish to avoid them take the time to understand the complete definition of plagiarism and run their work through a plagiarism checker before sending it out into the world.

Even the vigilant can fall prey to inferior tools, unfortunately. Before selecting a plagiarism checker, you should understand how they work and what they can (and cannot) detect.

How We Check for Plagiarism

When exploring how to check for plagiarism, most students and professionals conclude that including a checking tool in their revision process is not only helpful but necessary. When you consider the Herculean task of checking each line of your paper against the text of each of your resources, the benefits of a checker are clear. Moreover, this manual approach would only alert you to matching text in the sources you’re aware of, after all, and leaves the sources you haven’t reviewed untouched.

But, hang on. Why would sources you haven’t reviewed factor into your review? The answer to this lies in the plagiarism definition you learned above. What is plagiarism? It’s presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, intentionally or otherwise. It is not uncommon to uncover an idea while you’re researching a topic and later misremember it as your own. This might even occur years after you originally came across it.

You might wonder: how can plagiarism be avoided if you have to account for the source of every thought you include in your work? A few exceptions minimize the scope of this. Common knowledge about your topic does not need to be supported by a citation, nor does knowledge that you gained through your personal experience. Using a subscription-based or free plagiarism checker will help you locate any passages that may fall into these categories so you can review them and decide for yourself whether a citation is needed.

EasyBib Plus writing tools provide easy, convenient, and reliable support to help you find potentially missed citations and can help you improve your paper into a high-quality paper with integrity. Simply upload your paper, select the checker, then sit back and relax as the site scans your document. In mere moments, we’ll search the web for passages of similar text and highlight duplicate content for your review.

Regardless of the tools you use to help you revise and polish your work, it’s ultimately your responsibility to ensure that you’re writing and submitting ethical work. That’s why our tools go beyond the basics and require your participation. The tool never automatically makes changes to your paper, but only flags sections that may need your attention and provides you with the matching source so you can to make an educated decision.

If you find that a citation is needed, our citation tools can help you create properly formatted citations and develop a complete bibliography. And, if you review the passage and determine that the match is coincidental, you can dismiss the alert and move on to the next.

Seamless Citation Creation

Professional writers and students alike can find creating citations incredibly confusing. Nevertheless, they are an integral part of a well-written and researched paper and a requirement in almost all academic settings. But, have you ever wondered why they are so important? Citations really do have a purpose—other than driving us crazy— that make it necessary always to cite our sources.

We cite our sources for a few important reasons:

We need to give credit where credit is due. When you use a quote from someone else’s work, you need to give credit for using their words and ideas. Research is often based on the works and ideas of others. However, to include the words and ideas of another without giving them proper credit is to plagiarize, even if the act was unintentional.

In addition, showing that you’ve done proper research by including in text & parenthetical citations and a comprehensive list of sources to back up your arguments gives your work a layer of credibility that can help you earn the trust of your reader or teacher.

Readers can find the sources you used.  When you’re writing high school or undergraduate papers, your only readers may be your instructors and peers. However, including citations at every level of writing helps to ensure that anyone who reads your work can access your sources to check their accuracy, learn more about your topic, and further their own research.

Sources can take your research and learning to the next level, too. When you are conducting research on a topic, checking the works cited or annotated bibliographies prepared by your sources can lead you down new avenues in your research to further develop your ideas and help you write your papers.

Correctly utilizing citations gives strength to your thoughts and opinions. Understanding the value of citations does not, unfortunately, make them any easier to create. We know how confusing it can be, but don’t throw in the towel on learning how to cite websites in MLA , create your APA citation website references, or format your works cited —this is where we come in!

While a free online plagiarism detector may tell you how much of your work is unoriginal and may even identify the passages that meet their plagiarize definition, a premium EasyBib Plus plagiarism checker account also gives you access to our powerful citation resources and generator so you can:

Scan your papers with the plagiarism tool to check for plagiarism-free work before you submit.

Review flagged passages to determine if they meet the plagiarism definition and create unlimited citations in APA format and MLA format for anything fitting the plagiarism meaning. Need more styles ? Check out our regular citation generator for thousands of choices and free resources to help you learn how to create an APA parenthetical citation , APA book citation , APA works cited , and so much more!

Build a full bibliography for your paper right along with your parenthetical or in-text citations, which can save you hours of work along the way compared to manually creating and formatting them.

How Else Do We Help You Improve Your Paper?

The EasyBib Plus plagiarism detector helps you check your content or paper for text that may be missing a citation—which may fall within the definition of plagiarism—to help ensure you don’t accidentally plagiarize. It also includes grammar check and spelling check tools to help identify errors and suggest grammatical tweaks that could help to elevate the level of your writing.

Running a plagiarism check couldn’t be easier! Just upload your paper to the online proofreader, and in a few moments we’ll have your writing and citing suggestions. And, there’s no need to worry about your paper after it’s been scanned.

thesis check grammar

As a student in college or any other institution of higher learning, thesis papers and dissertations form a major part of your curriculum. With that said, however, writing a thesis paper or a dissertation takes much more than identifying a problem, choosing a unique topic, collecting data, collating the data, and coming up with a conclusion. You need to clearly express your ideas and insights using good grammar, proper punctuation, and accurate spelling. Needless to say, your work needs to be 100% unique and free from any plagiarism.

thesis check grammar

Combined, all these writing components can overwhelm even the most English-proficient student, translating into lower grades. Luckily for you, our online thesis tester can help you deliver the perfect thesis paper or dissertation.

Unlike the manual proofreading process, our thesis checker free crawls through texts, automatically detects all writing-related mistakes, and offers the most-appropriate suggestion. Common Mistakes When Writing Thesis Papers and Dissertations

As a student, there are many potential mistakes that you can make when writing your thesis paper or dissertation. Making these mistakes not only affects your academic career but could also lead to a much bigger problem of missing out on your graduation. Whilst the writing process is frustrating, learning about the potential pitfalls may ease some of your stress.

In this section, we are going to look at the list of the most common mistakes that students make when composing their thesis papers and dissertations.

Choosing the wrong thesis/dissertation topic

One of the biggest mistakes that students make when writing their thesis papers and dissertations is choosing the wrong topic. Not only does this weaken the entire plot of the thesis but also addresses the wrong problem. When picking up a topic for your papers, ensure you follow the following points:

  • Conduct proper background research.
  • Conceptualize various concepts. If the concept of your paper doesn’t interest you, chances are you’ll find the writing process boring.
  • Phrase your topic in the form of a research question.
  • Experiment with different initial approaches to your topic and establish its impact on the different aspects of academics and society.

Writing a weak thesis/dissertation statement

On top of choosing a topic and developing the research question, you need to create a strong thesis statement for your paper. A poorly written thesis statement can turn off the readers, preventing them from going through the entire paper.

A strong thesis statement should be short, precise, bold, and straight to the point. The statement must be reliable and attractive. Here are some things to keep in mind when writing your thesis/dissertation statement;

  • Understand, internalize, and analyze your topic.
  • Your thesis/dissertation statement must give pointers for further discussion.
  • Avoid grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors in your statement.
  • Avoid writing anything that isn’t backed by concrete evidence or references.

Disconnect between thesis/dissertation statement and written information

Successful thesis papers and dissertations try hard to make a logical connection between the statement and the supporting information. Unfortunately, many students fail to make this connection due to poor research and limited brainstorming.

To fix this problem, you need to research more about supporting ideas or relevant information to support your main ideas. These supporting statements must come from relevant resources, be properly synchronized, and cite the sources from which they were sourced.

Academic integrity violation

Integrity is one of the fundamental pillars of academic writing, and violating it is not entertained when preparing a thesis paper or dissertation. Here are some instances of academic integrity violations;

  • Violating university guidelines.
  • Plagiarizing content i.e using content from other sources without referencing the source or giving credit to the author. More than often, plagiarism is accidental rather than intentional.
  • False information. Making false statements or claims is not acceptable in academic writing.

Failing to proofread and edit

Editing and proofreading are critical components of thesis/dissertation writing. Silly spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes can compromise the quality of your paper and even lead to lower grades. While at it, you need to ensure that your papers are properly formatted and referenced.

Whilst it’s possible to hire an experienced editor to streamline your work, their services don’t come cheap. Still, you need to engage in the back and forth with the editor to ensure they’re making the necessary changes.

Luckily for you, our free thesis checker can help make all the necessary grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence construction changes. And with the thesis plagiarism checker online tool, you can catch accidental plagiarism in your work.

How to proofread your thesis

Tips for proofreading your thesis

1. Review your institution's guidelines

2. take a break before you read anything, 3. determine how to proofread your thesis, 4. use online tools, 5. read your thesis in a different order, 6. read your thesis out loud, 7. reach out to your peers, frequently asked questions about proofreading your thesis, related articles.

Now that you've finished your thesis , it's time to proofread it. You'll need to do this several times to ensure that you submit a solid thesis that's free of grammatical mistakes and typos. We've put together a few tips that can help you optimize the proofreading stage of your thesis.

Your institution will likely have specific guidelines for formatting your thesis. Be sure to double-check the guidelines for layout and format issues, including:

  • paper size and margins
  • running head
  • page numbering
  • line spacing

Take time to read through the guidelines again and keep them handy as you proofread your thesis.

The proofreading stage is also a good time to check your citations or references . Whether you're using Harvard, APA (American Psychological Association), MLA (Modern Language Association) or some other citation style, make sure that your citations are correct.

Give yourself some time off before you start proofreading your thesis. This allows you to return to your work with fresh eyes. Ideally, you should plan to take a break of several weeks before you begin proofreading; however, even a short break can help you refocus and catch more mistakes.

Some people like to proofread their thesis on screen, while others like to print it out and read it on paper. Whichever method you choose, be aware that you can't read it all at once. Rather, make a plan for how you want to approach proofreading and stick to it. You'll generally want to break up your process by chapter or section.

Consider breaking down your thesis proofreading process in one of these ways:

  • by paragraph

Several online tools can help you with proofreading and some of them are even free. Use tools like Grammarly or Proofread Bot for proofreading or Readable.com or Slickwrite to critique your grammar and writing. A quick Google search will show you that there are dozens of tools out there that can help you with your thesis!

Week 1 : Read a chapter a day, watching out for major issues in argumentation, use of evidence, and organization.

Week 2 : Complete substantive revisions and check that all citations are correct. Use a reference manager like Paperpile to create accurate citations and bibliographies.

Week 3 : Re-read each chapter, checking for any additional surface errors. Double-check that your formatting aligns with your department’s thesis requirements.

Try reading your work backwards or in a random order. This approach often works better than reading your work from beginning to end.

By switching up your expectations, you will catch more errors. Plus, starting at the end allows you to keep your conclusions in mind as you read and helps you to verify that you've proven your thesis statement.

The best way to catch grammatical, stylistic, and organizational mistakes is to read your work aloud to yourself. Hearing your own words greatly increases your ability to find typos and errors.

Keep your eye out for the following common errors:

  • subject-verb agreement
  • faulty predication
  • misplaced modifiers
  • tense changes
  • incorrect citations

If you have friends or peers who are also writing theses, or who have completed them, reach out for advice and help. For instance, blogger Pat Thomson suggests setting up a proofreading deal with a friend.

Also, you might find it useful to join or start a writing group. These groups build accountability and provide writers with support for all stages of the research and writing process.

The length of the proofreading process depends on the length of the thesis. Plus, you should plan to take a couple of weeks off before you start proofreading. It's also a good idea to break up longer projects by chapter or section.

Always double-check your institution's guidelines for the general layout, including:

If you know someone who is willing to proofread your thesis, then definitely ask! Friends and peers who are also working on theses, or who have recently finished, can provide you with useful insights about the grammar, style, and structure of your thesis.

As part of your proofreading plan, you should create a checklist of items that you want to watch out for while proofreading your thesis. Your checklist might include:

  • Spelling and typos
  • Verb tenses and subject-verb agreement
  • Sentence structure
  • Layout and formatting
  • Citations and/or references
  • Consistency of style
  • Organization
  • Overall flow

You should plan to proofread your thesis as many times as it takes to ensure that you submit a polished and professional work. Typically, however, most thesis writers proofread their work around three to four times.

The Top 13 Grammarly Alternatives [Ultimate Guide]

Little figures on a computer choosing a grammarly alternative

Whether you’re sending an email to a customer or posting a blog about your business, writing is an essential skill. Good writing makes you sound more professional, engaging, and persuasive.

Quite a few tools on the market can help you improve your writing. One that you might have heard of is Grammarly. But Grammarly isn’t the only grammar and writing tool  out there.

If you’re going to rely on a writing tool to optimize your communication and content, you want to make sure you choose the best one. This article explores some of the best grammar and style checkers on the market.

Let’s start!

Overview of Grammarly

Grammarly started as a way to catch spelling and grammar mistakes, but it can do a lot more than that now.

Before we go through our list of Grammarly alternatives, let’s take a quick look at the original.

Grammarly’s Chrome extension allows you to use Grammarly’s suggestions with Gmail, WordPress, and anywhere else you write on the web.

You can also get Grammarly as a Windows desktop app. Just drag and drop a file you would like proofread into Grammarly.

There’s a specific app for Microsoft Office. You can use it to write Word documents or Outlook emails .

You can use Grammarly’s Android and iOS apps to check your texts or other writing on mobile.

If you don’t want to install anything, you can use Grammarly’s online editor.

The Grammarly online text editor

What Grammarly Does

Despite its name, Grammarly is more than a grammar checker. It checks your writing for:

  • Correctness
  • Engagement (whether your writing is exciting and fun)
  • Delivery (like whether you sound harsh vs. polite or confident vs. timid)

Correctness and clarity are included in the free version, while engagement and delivery are premium features.

For each document, you can set goals to get tailored suggestions. For example, you can choose whether your writing is formal or informal and whether you’re writing for an expert audience or a general one.

Some goals are available in the free plan, while others are only included in the premium.

It also gives your writing an “overall score,” which you can improve by accepting the suggestions.

Grammarly Pricing

Grammarly offers three plans: free, premium, and business.

Grammarly pricing structures

Grammarly Free

  • Includes grammar and spelling checker
  • Some suggestions to improve clarity

Grammarly Premium

  • $30/month, $60/quarter, or $144/year
  • Grammar and spelling checker
  • Plagiarism checker
  • Suggestions focused on tone, word choice, and formality level
  • Sentence rewrites for clarity

Grammarly Business (for teams of three or more)

  • Pricing depends on the number of users. Starts at $12.50/month/user
  • Includes everything in Premium plan
  • Add your brand style guide
  • Team analytics dashboard
  • Account roles and permissions

Why Choose a Grammarly Alternative?

Grammarly has a lot of great features that can improve your writing.

However, depending on your needs and budget, it may not be the best solution for you. Here are a few reasons you might want to try a Grammarly alternative.

Other Options Are Less Expensive

Grammarly has a free version that might be all you need. But its premium plans aren’t the cheapest on the market. Shop around for the specific features you want at the best price.

Grammarly Doesn’t Rewrite (All) Your Sentences

Grammarly offers a lot of helpful suggestions, including a few rewrite suggestions for wordy or unclear sentences (in the premium version). But if your goal is to have your work rewritten, Grammarly isn’t your tool.

Grammarly Is Focused on English Only

If you need to write in a language other than English — or to translate your existing content — Grammarly can’t help you. It does, however, support multiple English dialects.

Every Tool Has Different Integrations

Grammarly has a lot of helpful integrations with web apps and desktop apps, but you might find that other tools have integrations that work better for your business.

Almost all of the Grammarly alternatives on this list have a free version (and the others have an affordable basic plan), so try a few out to see what works for you.

The Top 13 Alternatives to Grammarly

Let’s break down 13 alternatives to Grammarly, including key features and price.

1. ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid  is a top Grammarly competitor with many of the same features. In addition to checking grammar and spelling, the free version of ProWritingAid will show you a few style suggestions. For the full list, you have to go Premium.

ProWritingAid has some interesting reports that Grammarly doesn’t, like an alliteration analysis and dialogue tag check. In the free version, these are run on the first 500 words of your document only.

It has browser extensions for Firefox , Safari, and Edge, along with a few integrations that Grammarly doesn’t have, like Scrivener.

Key Features

  • Grammar checker
  • Style checker
  • Synonym suggestions
  • Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge extensions
  • Integrations with Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Scrivener, and more
  • Extensive writing reports
  • Free version
  • Premium: $20/month, $79/year, $399 lifetime

If you’re trying to improve your writing on WordPress or Medium , the Hemingway desktop app has a useful integration that lets you publish right from the editor to your blog.

That desktop app is available for $19.99.

  • Highlights lengthy and complex sentences, adverbs, and passive voice

3. WhiteSmoke

WhiteSmoke  has a grammar checker, style checker, plagiarism checker, and translation tools.

Its features are more basic than Grammarly’s, but it has the advantage in some areas. It includes Safari, Opera, and Firefox browser extensions and native desktop apps for both macOS and Windows. It also does language translation.

A downside to WhiteSmoke is that it doesn’t have a free version. However, the web version based on browser extensions is cheaper than Grammarly Premium and includes WhiteSmoke’s style checker.

WhiteSmoke Premium and Business plans include the desktop apps and integrations with Microsoft Word and Gmail.

  • Chrome, Safari , Opera, and Firefox browser extension
  • Desktop and mobile apps
  • Email and document templates
  • Translation tools
  • No free version

4. Readable

As you can guess from the name, Readable  checks the readability of your writing using algorithms including Flesch-Kincaid and Gunning-Fog.

Readable also has a grammar and style tool that finds issues like passive voice, cliches, and adverbs. Plus, it can check your writing for keyword density.

One nice feature of Readable is a URL checker that lets you analyze existing web pages. Premium users can see a full history of every URL they’ve scored. It could be quite helpful if you have a blog or website you want to optimize.

Readable doesn’t have a free version, but a seven-day free trial of the ContentPro plan is available.

  • Readability test
  • Keyword density tool
  • Can be used on the web, with documents, or with emails

5. WordTune

WordTune is also a tool to improve your grammar and style, but it’s a bit different than the other Grammarly alternatives on this list.

Rather than acting as a proofreading tool , WordTune focuses on full sentence rewrites. Hover over a sentence, and it will give you multiple suggestions for how you could rephrase that sentence.

For example, if you enter the sentence, “I’m looking for the best grammar tool because I want to write awesome content for my website,” it gives you ten suggestions, including “My website needs a good grammar tool if I want to write compelling content,” and the more formal “to produce awesome content for my website, I seek the best grammar tool.”

The WordTune homepage

The Premium version lets you select whether you want the rewrites to be formal or informal and whether you’re trying to make your writing shorter or longer.

  • Provides multiple rewrite suggestions for sentences
  • Highlight a phrase to get synonyms
  • Chrome extension and online editor
  • Premium: $24.99/month, $119.88/year

Ginger Software’s writing tool offers many of the same features as Grammarly, along with the rephrasing feature of WordTune.

The free browser extension has a 600 character limit. It only does a basic grammar check. However, it does provide rewrite suggestions and synonyms for the words you use.

Giner Software

The Premium plan gives more style suggestions and has a tool for translating your writing into 40+ languages.

  • Suggested rephrasing
  • Dictionary lookup
  • Chrome extension
  • Premium: $13.99/month, $89.88/year, $167.76/two years

Sapling  is a tool that works with CRMs  and messaging platforms to help sales and support teams compose personalized responses.

Sapling provides grammar correction and style suggestions, but it’s also focused on helping you respond more quickly to customers. For example, you can quickly insert pieces of text that your team uses frequently.

Managers can look at the team’s writing scores and error reports to ensure that customers receive excellent professional communication.

Sapling has a lot of integrations with helpdesk solutions like Zendesk, Helpshift, and Freshdesk, as well as sales and marketing tools like Salesforce, Hubspot, and Mailchimp .

Most of Sapling’s unique features are only available in the Pro or Enterprise versions, but the free version will also give you basic writing suggestions.

  • Focus on customer support teams
  • Integrates with many CRMs and helpdesk tools
  • Browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox
  • AI learns past patterns
  • Pro: $25/month
  • Enterprise: Custom pricing

8. PaperRater

PaperRater  is a grammar and plagiarism tool that focuses on student papers and personal essays for college applications.

As a grammar checking tool, PaperRater is decent, but it doesn’t have as many advanced features as some of the solutions on this list.

The plagiarism tool lets you know whether your content is original and provides a list of URLs that may have similar content. You have to get the Premium plan to see which snippet of text is unoriginal.

PaperRater grammar tool

When you submit your writing, you can let the tool know the writer’s grade level and the type of paper submitted. For writers in fifth grade and up, it will give the paper a grade. It also provides a few more reports, like an analysis of how much scholarly vocabulary the paper contains.

  • Grammar check
  • Plagiarism check
  • Essay scoring
  • File upload (MS Word, .txt, .rtf)
  • Premium: $14.95/month, $95.40/year

Reverso  is primarily known as a translation tool that can translate to and from 14 languages. After translating a phrase, it will give you examples of the text in context and suggest synonyms.

You can improve your foreign language skills by listening to how texts are being pronounced by native speakers and seeing verb conjugations for ten of the languages.

For English and French, it also has a grammar checker.

The free version only lets you check 450 characters and provides basic error corrections. The Premium plan enables you to check texts up to 2,000 characters. It also suggests synonyms and does sentence rewrites.

  • Multilingual translation
  • Spell checker and grammar checker in English and French
  • Rephrasing suggestions
  • Premium: €9.99 EUR/month, €59.88 EUR/year

10. Slick Write

We’ll start with the best news: Slick Write is free. And it offers some great features that you have to pay for with most solutions.

For example, it checks for overly complex sentences and excessive adverbs.

You can customize the feedback you get to match your preferences. For instance, you can choose whether or not to allow profanity or passive voice.

An area where Slick Write excels is its reports and analysis. The main editing page provides key statistics like readability, average sentence length, estimated reading time, and more. You can also dig into reports on your writing that analyze things like sentence flow and vocabulary.

If you highlight a phrase in your writing, it gives you word associations and links to check the phrase on Wikipedia, Urban Dictionary, and Google .

  • Customized feedback
  • Reports and analysis
  • Chrome and Firefox extensions

11. LanguageTool

LanguageTool  does a lot of the same things as Grammarly.

The free version provides grammar, spelling, and punctuation checks. It also offers some basic style suggestions, like eliminating passive voice and redundant words. You can set it to “picky mode” to have it find more issues.

The premium version gives you additional style and tone critiques and synonym suggestions. Other unique features include detecting misspelled names and titles in emails and incorrect numbers, such as ISBN numbers.

What sets LanguageTool apart is that it can check text in dozens of languages and dialects.

The LanguageTool homepage

  • Multilingual grammar and style checker
  • Multiple English dialects
  • Chrome, Safari, Edge, Opera, and Firefox extensions
  • Desktop app for Windows and macOS
  • Plugins for MS Word, Google Docs, OpenOffice, and LibreOffice
  • Email add-ons for Gmail and Thunderbird
  • Premium for individuals: $19/month, $59/year
  • Premium for teams: $106.20 per year

Like many of the other tools on this list, Writer  checks grammar, style, and plagiarism.

As a writing tool for individuals, Writer is competitive with Grammarly and other grammar checkers. But where it shines is as a solution for teams.

Writer can check your team’s content based on your style guide and brand voice guidelines. You can also share team “snippets” — sections of approved, reusable text ranging from single sentences to page-long templates.

Reports help you track your team, as well as find out what mistakes they make most, who are using the app, and where they’re using it.

A unique feature of Writer is its inclusivity checker that helps you avoid offensive and negative expressions.

  • Inclusivity checker
  • Integrations with Google Docs, MS Word, Outlook, and Figma
  • Pro: $11/month, $99/year
  • Team: $18/month, $162/year
  • Enterprise: Custom pricing
  • 30-day free trial for Pro and Team plans

13. SentenceCheckup

Forget all the bells and whistles of the Grammarly competitors above. What if you just want a basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation checker as a Grammarly alternative?

Try SentenceCheckup . You don’t have to download anything or pay a fee. It’s not going to tell you if your tone is off or if you’re using too much passive voice, but it will tell you if you have a grammar error.

Just paste your writing into the online tool, and it will highlight your mistakes. Hover over the highlighted error and change it with one click.

The SentenceCheckup homepage

  • Free web tool
  • Highlights errors
  • American and British English dialects supported

The best way to find a Grammarly alternative that works for you is to try a few out yourself.

What Is a Thesis? | Ultimate Guide & Examples

Published on September 14, 2022 by Tegan George . Revised on April 16, 2024.

A thesis is a type of research paper based on your original research. It is usually submitted as the final step of a master’s program or a capstone to a bachelor’s degree.

Writing a thesis can be a daunting experience. Other than a dissertation , it is one of the longest pieces of writing students typically complete. It relies on your ability to conduct research from start to finish: choosing a relevant topic , crafting a proposal , designing your research , collecting data , developing a robust analysis, drawing strong conclusions , and writing concisely .

Thesis vs. thesis statement, how to structure a thesis, acknowledgements or preface, list of figures and tables, list of abbreviations, introduction, literature review, methodology, reference list, proofreading and editing, defending your thesis, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about theses.

You may have heard the word thesis as a standalone term or as a component of academic writing called a thesis statement . Keep in mind that these are two very different things.

  • A thesis statement is a very common component of an essay, particularly in the humanities. It usually comprises 1 or 2 sentences in the introduction of your essay , and should clearly and concisely summarize the central points of your academic essay .
  • A thesis is a long-form piece of academic writing, often taking more than a full semester to complete. It is generally a degree requirement for Master’s programs, and is also sometimes required to complete a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts colleges.
  • In the US, a dissertation is generally written as a final step toward obtaining a PhD.
  • In other countries (particularly the UK), a dissertation is generally written at the bachelor’s or master’s level.

The final structure of your thesis depends on a variety of components, such as:

  • Your discipline
  • Your theoretical approach

Humanities theses are often structured more like a longer-form essay . Just like in an essay, you build an argument to support a central thesis.

In both hard and social sciences, theses typically include an introduction , literature review , methodology section ,  results section , discussion section , and conclusion section . These are each presented in their own dedicated section or chapter. In some cases, you might want to add an appendix .

Thesis examples

We’ve compiled a short list of thesis examples to help you get started.

  • Example thesis #1:   “Abolition, Africans, and Abstraction: the Influence of the ‘Noble Savage’ on British and French Antislavery Thought, 1787-1807” by Suchait Kahlon.
  • Example thesis #2: “’A Starving Man Helping Another Starving Man’: UNRRA, India, and the Genesis of Global Relief, 1943-1947″ by Julian Saint Reiman.

The very first page of your thesis contains all necessary identifying information, including:

  • Your full title
  • Your full name
  • Your department
  • Your institution and degree program
  • Your submission date.

Sometimes the title page also includes your student ID, the name of your supervisor, or the university’s logo. Check out your university’s guidelines if you’re not sure.

Read more about title pages

The acknowledgements section is usually optional. Its main point is to allow you to thank everyone who helped you in your thesis journey, such as supervisors, friends, or family. You can also choose to write a preface , but it’s typically one or the other, not both.

An abstract is a short summary of your thesis. Usually a maximum of 300 words long, it’s should include brief descriptions of your research objectives , methods, results, and conclusions. Though it may seem short, it introduces your work to your audience, serving as a first impression of your thesis.

Read more about abstracts

A table of contents lists all of your sections, plus their corresponding page numbers and subheadings if you have them. This helps your reader seamlessly navigate your document.

Your table of contents should include all the major parts of your thesis. In particular, don’t forget the the appendices. If you used heading styles, it’s easy to generate an automatic table Microsoft Word.

Read more about tables of contents

While not mandatory, if you used a lot of tables and/or figures, it’s nice to include a list of them to help guide your reader. It’s also easy to generate one of these in Word: just use the “Insert Caption” feature.

Read more about lists of figures and tables

If you have used a lot of industry- or field-specific abbreviations in your thesis, you should include them in an alphabetized list of abbreviations . This way, your readers can easily look up any meanings they aren’t familiar with.

Read more about lists of abbreviations

Relatedly, if you find yourself using a lot of very specialized or field-specific terms that may not be familiar to your reader, consider including a glossary . Alphabetize the terms you want to include with a brief definition.

Read more about glossaries

An introduction sets up the topic, purpose, and relevance of your thesis, as well as expectations for your reader. This should:

  • Ground your research topic , sharing any background information your reader may need
  • Define the scope of your work
  • Introduce any existing research on your topic, situating your work within a broader problem or debate
  • State your research question(s)
  • Outline (briefly) how the remainder of your work will proceed

In other words, your introduction should clearly and concisely show your reader the “what, why, and how” of your research.

A literature review helps you gain a robust understanding of any extant academic work on your topic, encompassing:

  • Selecting relevant sources
  • Determining the credibility of your sources
  • Critically evaluating each of your sources
  • Drawing connections between sources, including any themes, patterns, conflicts, or gaps

A literature review is not merely a summary of existing work. Rather, your literature review should ultimately lead to a clear justification for your own research, perhaps via:

  • Addressing a gap in the literature
  • Building on existing knowledge to draw new conclusions
  • Exploring a new theoretical or methodological approach
  • Introducing a new solution to an unresolved problem
  • Definitively advocating for one side of a theoretical debate

Read more about literature reviews

Theoretical framework

Your literature review can often form the basis for your theoretical framework, but these are not the same thing. A theoretical framework defines and analyzes the concepts and theories that your research hinges on.

Read more about theoretical frameworks

Your methodology chapter shows your reader how you conducted your research. It should be written clearly and methodically, easily allowing your reader to critically assess the credibility of your argument. Furthermore, your methods section should convince your reader that your method was the best way to answer your research question.

A methodology section should generally include:

  • Your overall approach ( quantitative vs. qualitative )
  • Your research methods (e.g., a longitudinal study )
  • Your data collection methods (e.g., interviews or a controlled experiment
  • Any tools or materials you used (e.g., computer software)
  • The data analysis methods you chose (e.g., statistical analysis , discourse analysis )
  • A strong, but not defensive justification of your methods

Read more about methodology sections

Your results section should highlight what your methodology discovered. These two sections work in tandem, but shouldn’t repeat each other. While your results section can include hypotheses or themes, don’t include any speculation or new arguments here.

Your results section should:

  • State each (relevant) result with any (relevant) descriptive statistics (e.g., mean , standard deviation ) and inferential statistics (e.g., test statistics , p values )
  • Explain how each result relates to the research question
  • Determine whether the hypothesis was supported

Additional data (like raw numbers or interview transcripts ) can be included as an appendix . You can include tables and figures, but only if they help the reader better understand your results.

Read more about results sections

Your discussion section is where you can interpret your results in detail. Did they meet your expectations? How well do they fit within the framework that you built? You can refer back to any relevant source material to situate your results within your field, but leave most of that analysis in your literature review.

For any unexpected results, offer explanations or alternative interpretations of your data.

Read more about discussion sections

Your thesis conclusion should concisely answer your main research question. It should leave your reader with an ultra-clear understanding of your central argument, and emphasize what your research specifically has contributed to your field.

Why does your research matter? What recommendations for future research do you have? Lastly, wrap up your work with any concluding remarks.

Read more about conclusions

In order to avoid plagiarism , don’t forget to include a full reference list at the end of your thesis, citing the sources that you used. Choose one citation style and follow it consistently throughout your thesis, taking note of the formatting requirements of each style.

Which style you choose is often set by your department or your field, but common styles include MLA , Chicago , and APA.

Create APA citations Create MLA citations

In order to stay clear and concise, your thesis should include the most essential information needed to answer your research question. However, chances are you have many contributing documents, like interview transcripts or survey questions . These can be added as appendices , to save space in the main body.

Once you’re done writing, the next part of your editing process begins. Leave plenty of time for proofreading and editing prior to submission. Nothing looks worse than grammar mistakes or sloppy spelling errors!

Consider using a professional thesis editing service or grammar checker to make sure your final project is perfect.

Once you’ve submitted your final product, it’s common practice to have a thesis defense, an oral component of your finished work. This is scheduled by your advisor or committee, and usually entails a presentation and Q&A session.

After your defense , your committee will meet to determine if you deserve any departmental honors or accolades. However, keep in mind that defenses are usually just a formality. If there are any serious issues with your work, these should be resolved with your advisor way before a defense.

The conclusion of your thesis or dissertation shouldn’t take up more than 5–7% of your overall word count.

If you only used a few abbreviations in your thesis or dissertation , you don’t necessarily need to include a list of abbreviations .

If your abbreviations are numerous, or if you think they won’t be known to your audience, it’s never a bad idea to add one. They can also improve readability, minimizing confusion about abbreviations unfamiliar to your reader.

When you mention different chapters within your text, it’s considered best to use Roman numerals for most citation styles. However, the most important thing here is to remain consistent whenever using numbers in your dissertation .

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical first steps in your writing process. It helps you to lay out and organize your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding what kind of research you’d like to undertake.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review , research methods , avenues for future research, etc.)

A thesis is typically written by students finishing up a bachelor’s or Master’s degree. Some educational institutions, particularly in the liberal arts, have mandatory theses, but they are often not mandatory to graduate from bachelor’s degrees. It is more common for a thesis to be a graduation requirement from a Master’s degree.

Even if not mandatory, you may want to consider writing a thesis if you:

  • Plan to attend graduate school soon
  • Have a particular topic you’d like to study more in-depth
  • Are considering a career in research
  • Would like a capstone experience to tie up your academic experience
