Thesis, Master's Degree

Lead paragraph

Starting a thesis can seem challenging, even if the topic and the development of own professional competence are motivating and inspiring. However, it is not worth to make the start become an obstacle to the progress of studies.

On these pages we have compiled a description of the stages, requirements and goals of doing the thesis. It is worth reading the materials well in advance and carefully, as they provide the answer to many things. However, this is not the only support when doing a thesis.

The community of orientation, ie. studies, other students and Master seminars (prev. orientation evenings), as well as the head of specialisation support the progress from start to finish. Significant support is also provided by the advisor of the thesis.

The Master's thesis is a 30-credit research and development task (approximately 800 hours of student work). Its purpose is defined in law as follows: "The aim of the Master's thesis is to develop and demonstrate the ability to apply research data and use selected methods for the analysis and solution of problems in working life and readiness for independent demanding expert work" (Government Decree 423/2005, § 7a).

The thesis can be started immediately at the beginning of the studies. First, the student comes up with an idea suitable for the specialisation and sends a topic proposal to the specialisation head. In addition, the student enrols in the Applied Design Research course. NB: You don't enrol for thesis via PSP.

In the 90-credit Master's degree programme, the student starts the thesis at the beginning of the second academic year at the latest, so that the student can graduate within the target time.

Specialisation activities (studies and joint Master seminars, prev. specialisation evenings) provide support for the ideation and launching of a thesis.

1. Thesis stage 1: Planning

The thesis project begins with the choice of the topic. The student makes a topic proposal either before or at the beginning of the Applied Design Research course. Once the student has defined the topic, he/she prepares and processes the topic proposal in the manner instructed by the specialisation head. The specialisation head approves the topic proposal, and after that the student saves it in Wihi. Please ensure that the type of thesis is a Master's Thesis in Wihi. The head of specialisation appoints an advisor for the student’s thesis project. The supervision of the thesis can be individual or group supervision.

In the Applied Design Research course, the student prepares a thesis plan based on the topic proposal. The student saves the thesis plan in Wihi, after which the guidance process starts with the advisor. At the beginning of the guidance process, the student and the advisor go through the guidance contract together.

A thorough plan is a good starting point for the implementation of the thesis. The main features of the plan are as follows:

  •  Introduction: The topic of the work (problem or need) and a compact introduction of the target organisation.
  • Objectives: The expected results for the organisation.
  • Research questions: Which questions does the thesis answer?
  • Theoretical framework: What are the previous research, theories, concepts, literature and other possible material that are essential for the work?
  • Methodology: Data, methods and tools which are used in the research and development project, and data management plan, which describes how the collected data will be processed and stored.
  • Organisation: The business unit, function or project in the organisation which is the focus of the student’s research and development (in case the thesis is commissioned by an organisation).
  • Schedule: Phasing and scheduling the tasks.
  • Risk assessment: Anticipation and preparedness for problem situations.

In defining the objectives and schedule, the preparation of the plan is also supported by discussions with a representative of the organisation, ie. the commissioning party. In particular, the commissioning party can help define the goals and schedule of the thesis.

If possible, the student makes a commissioning contract with the representative of the target organisation. A contract is recommended especially when the organisation is other than the student's employer. In addition, a possible research permit must be agreed with the organisation.

Research authorization

When Haaga-Helia is the commissioning party, the contract is always made. If Haaga-Helia is the subject of the thesis or the research is conducted for Haaga-Helia students, staff or alumni, the research must be approved in accordance with research authorization guidelines. The research authorization application will be sent to the following expert  [email protected] .

When making the thesis plan, the student also familiarizes herself with research ethics (see 5. Research ethics).

2. Thesis stage 2: Implementation

After the thesis plan is accepted the student will start writing the thesis: he/she will read up on literature, plan and carry out the research and development project and write the thesis according to the reporting instructions. The writing of the thesis starts at the beginning of the work so that observations and causes and backgrounds for various choices will get noted. The student and the advisor use Wihi to track the progressing of different versions of the work. The student will participate in a Master seminar (prev. specialisation’s evening) at least two times and will present the thesis in a way agreed with the advisor.

The writing of a thesis is mainly independent work but there are several forms of support available for the student:

Thesis advisor will read different versions written by the student, comments them and gives feedback and by doing so promotes the completing of the work. The advisor and student will agree on meetings. When changes are made to the plan they have to be agreed with the advisor.

When the student is doing his/her thesis in a group the group itself offers support as well.

Master seminars (prev. spesialisation’s evenings) and specialisation’s community (including Teams platform or Moodle) offer possibility to discuss the topic and doing of the thesis with the specialization head and other students. At Master seminars topical issues are addressed and theses are presented. The student will agree about presenting of thesis at a Master seminar or by using a video recording with the advisor.

This web page includes all the common instructions for a Master thesis.

Master thesis workshops are workshops intended for students to support the students’ use of methods and writing skills. The content and schedule of thesis workshops can be found at this thesis web page.

Library and information services (online library HH Finna ) offer guidance for information search and managing your references with Mendeley reference management program. Haaga-Helia’s LibGuides offer a lot of information and support for writing a thesis. It is recommended that the student familiarises him/herself with How to search for information guide and Referencing help at LibGuides. At LibGuide web pages you can also find tips for academic writing and research method literature.

Discussions with the commissioner at the target organisation can also support especially the writing of the practical part of the thesis.

3. Thesis stage 3: Finalising

The student agrees on the schedule of completing the thesis with the advisor so that there is enough time left for the assessment. The following tasks belong to the finalising of the thesis:

  • Presentation of the thesis
  • Maturity test
  • Thesis plagiarism review
  • Publishing the thesis

Presentation of the thesis: The student agrees on presenting the thesis with the thesis advisor and/or the teacher responsible for specialisation. For example, the student can present the thesis in the Master's seminar of the specialisation or by making video recording of it for the specialisation's platform.

Maturity test: The student writes the maturity test in the field of his/her study in his/her school language (Finnish or Swedish, otherwise English). Starting from September 1, 2023, an abstract written for the thesis will serve as the maturity test. The maturity test is evaluated on a pass/fail scale. (See instructions .) Plagiarism review: The student sends the public version of the thesis via Wihi to Ouriginal-review. Confidential parts of the thesis are not sent to Ouriginal.

Publishing the thesis: The student publishes the thesis after he/she has submitted the thesis to Wihi for evaluation, and the advisor gives a permission to publish the thesis.

If in a thesis that started before August 1, 2022, the student has agreed on the confidentiality of the material with the commissioning organisation, the student will receive instructions from the advisor to complete the work. The student publishes his/her thesis in the open collection of the national Theseus online repository of Universities of Applied Sciences. If the commissioning party does not want the thesis to be published in an open collection, the thesis will be stored in the restricted collection of Theseus. In Theseus' open collection, the thesis is available online in full pdf format. The thesis saved in the restricted collection can be read in Haaga-Helia's intranet. Thesis metadata and abstract are openly available in both Theseus collections. However, the thesis is always a public document, so anyone has the right to request that it be read. This also applies to a thesis stored in the restricted collection. You can find more information on the restricted collection on the submission page of Theseus .  As the thesis is public, make sure that the published thesis, its abstract or other metadata does not contain information that is subject to trade secret, privacy or other confidential information. NOTE! If the thesis commissioning agreement has been drawn up before 1.1.2022 and the commissioning party has refused to save the thesis in the open collection of Theseus, the student must assure the commissioning organisation that the thesis can be saved in the restricted collection of Theseus instead of previous restricted colletion HHthesis. Unlike HHthesis, the metadata and summary of theses stored in Theseus' restricted collection are openly available online. In case of doubt, you should contact the library [email protected] . Theseus submission page Theseus instructions on how to upload thesis Theseus search page for publications Please note that the publication link is activated only when the library staff has approved the thesis and published it in Theseus. This can take 1-2 work days. More information on Theseus can be obtained from Haaga-Helia libraries. If your thesis has not been published within a couple of days in Theseus, please check the email you have given when submitting your thesis. You may have received a notice of a failed submission. Please note that the confirmation message for an approved submission always comes to your Haaga-Helia email address, regardless of the address you provided during the submission.

If you have problems with publishing your thesis, you can contact Haaga-Helia library ( [email protected] ). If you need personal guidance with the publishing, library's specialists would be happy to help you also in a Teams meeting. Please tell in your message, if you wish to get guidance via Teams.

Open UAS students can't submit their thesis to Theseus. They can contact library staff, who will take care of the submission:  [email protected]

Your feedback on the thesis process

Feedback on the thesis process is included in the AVOP feedback at the end of the studies.

4. Thesis evaluation

Assessment of the thesis begins after the advisor has approved the Ouriginal analysis and the student has saved the finalised thesis to Wihi.

The thesis is assessed on a scale of 0-5, and the assessment is conducted by two assessors, the advisor together with another person appointed by Haaga-Helia (Section 13 of the Degree Regulations). The grade is determined on the basis of a joint assessment by the advisor and the second examiner. More detailed assessment criteria can be found in the file below.

The assessment of Master's Theses will change from August 1, 2022, so that the weighting factor for the results of theses will be removed. Theses started before August 1, 2022 will be assessed with an emphasis on results until July 31, 2023. After that, all theses are assessed without a weighting factor.

The evaluation statement is a public document that can be viewed by anyone in Haaga-Helia's library.

To assessment, the student requests also feedback from the possible commissioning party.

Rectifying procedure

The approved grade of the thesis cannot be raised by improving the thesis after the assessment. However, a correction request can be made for the assessment of the thesis (see Norms to be observed and appeal proceedings ).

If you feel that the assessment criteria have been incorrectly applied in the assessment of your thesis, you have the possibility to request a third assessor. In this procedure, a third assessor will re-assess your thesis. You will then still have the opportunity to request a correction from the examination board, which will not re-evaluate your thesis, but will examine whether the assessment process and criteria have been followed.

5. Research ethics

In accordance with Haaga-Helia's values, we take responsibility into account in all our operations. We are committed to good scientific practice and to conducting research and development in accordance with the principles of research ethics (see Responsible Conduct of Research by the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK ). In addition, we follow the ethical guidelines of The Rectors’ Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences Arene .

The following are the functions and processes related to Haaga-Helia's research ethics principles, especially from the students' point of view.

The Finnish National Board on Research Integrity divides research misconduct into four subcategories, namely, plagiarism, fabrication, falsification and misappropriation:

  • Unacknowledged borrowing, that is, plagiarism , refers to presenting material produced by someone else as one’s own.
  • Fabrication refers to presenting invented observations or results.
  • Falsification refers to the modification of original observations in such a way that the results are distorted, or that essential information is omitted.
  • Misappropriation means that results, an idea or a plan by someone else is presented as one’s own.

Ouriginal, plagiarism tracking program

All theses are reviewed with the Ouriginal application. The use of Ouriginal increases the awareness of plagiarism and its prevention. Its introduction indicates that plagiarism is not acceptable and that our university has both the desire and the means to address the issue.

The Ouriginal review of the thesis is done through Wihi. The thesis advisor approves the Ouriginal report in Wihi if there is no indication of plagiarism in the report, and the thesis can proceed to evaluation. If there is reason to suspect plagiarism, a preliminary investigation will be started, in which the student will also be heard.

The program can be used to find out if there is possible plagiarism in thesis or other learning assignments. The program compares the content of the document to three different source types:

  • Material published on the internet
  • Publisher material (eg. e-books and e-magazines)
  • Student-generated materials previously stored in the Ouriginal database.

The result of the comparison is an analysis report, which shows the similarities found. Based on this report, the advisor can determine if there is a suspicion of plagiarism.

The student's report is stored in a database, which will reveal possible plagiarism of the student's work in the future. If the student does not want the work to be the source material for plagiarism comparisons with other Ouriginal users, he / she should click on the link at the end of the confirmation message: "Follow this link if you want to prohibit the use of your document as described above."

Thesis Ethics Committee

Suspicions of plagiarism in theses are reviewed by Haaga-Helia’s Thesis Ethics Committee.

Haaga-Helia’s Degree Regulations 27 §, Personal Conduct at Haaga-Helia: “Cheating in examinations and plagiarism of assignments, thesis reports or other existing materials are strictly forbidden. If a student is found guilty of cheating, he or she is will be removed from the exam session or learning assignment and the course exam or other performance is failed. Plagiarism will result in failure of the course in question. Proved cheating will be entered into the study register. The punitive measures for the above-mentioned violations are governed by Section 38 of the Polytechnics Act (932/2014).”

6. Master seminars and thesis workshops

Students get support for their thesis work either in the specialisation’s Master seminars or the general thesis workshops. In the seminars, topics for theses are brainstormed, and in addition, the graduating students present their thesis.

Master seminars take place on the following Mondays in the autumn 2024:

  • September 9th in Finnish
  • October 28th in English
  • November 25th in Finnish from 17.00 to 19.30.

The teachers responsible for specialisations inform the students separately about the seminar agenda and place.

Thesis workshops

The thesis workshops support the planning and implementation of the Master's thesis and are intended for all Master's students. Participating in the workshops is voluntary and does not accumulate study points, but according to the feedback, they are useful at every stage of the thesis.

Assessment form Master's Thesis

Types of thesis

The research and development objectives, results and outputs can be very different. Respectively, working on the thesis can proceed in many different ways, and therefore, one general model cannot be given. However, theses have always in common that the student gets acquainted with previous research, collects and analyses one's own data or plans and implements one's own development project, and finally, describes and evaluates the results.

The master's thesis always begins with the definition of the objectives of research and development. The whole process is described in a thesis report and there can also be other outputs depending on the nature of the thesis. The progress of the work between these start and end points can then take different directions. The following orientations serve as examples.

The development-oriented thesis progresses from getting acquainted with previous research on the topic to the analysis of the current situation of the target organization and to the planned development and evaluation of the validity of the results. In addition to the thesis report, other outputs can be, for example, a new operating model, an operating manual for the organisation or operating instructions for an ICT system. In a development-oriented thesis, a separate output can also be developed and implemented, which can be, for example, a concept plan, product, a new service or piece of work.

Another common form of thesis is a research-oriented thesis , which also meets the development needs of the organisation. In this case, the thesis progresses from getting acquainted with previous research to collecting and analysing one's own research data, which serves as the basis for development proposals. Development proposals based on research must also be validated, for example, with feedback from the experts of the target organisation.

A research-oriented thesis can also focus on a current topic or challenge in working life or business. The student may not have an organisation or company as a commissioning party. Haaga-Helia, for example, can act as a client on the basis of its RDI needs. Even then, the thesis progresses from getting acquainted with previous research to collecting and analysing one's own research data. The result can be, for example, development suggestions, a new operating model for business, a blueprint or other recommendations.

Evaluation process

The system automatically sends an e-mail to the reviewers when the evaluation phase begins. The message will be sent to the e-mail address entered by the E-thesis officer at the student services. The message contains a direct link to the main view of the evaluation of the thesis to be reviewed. There are three links and they all lead to a different language view and form. Please check the faculty guidelines in which language the thesis should be evaluated. However, it is always possible to access the main view of the thesis also from the "workflows" page, which lists all jobs under review by the logged-in user. This requires you to log in to the system through the home page .

The main view includes links to downloading a pdf version of the thesis and the Ouriginal report. The page also shows the current content of the evaluation form. The reviewer can edit the content of the form by clicking the "Edit evaluation" button. When editing the content is locked for the logged-in user and prevents other reviewers from editing the content at the same time. If the reviewer opens evaluation while it’s being edited by another reviewer, he or she will be shown a lock-related message and information about the reviewer performing the edits. The lock is released when the reviewer saves or cancels the changes to the evaluation form or when the form is open for 30 minutes without saving / canceling.

The reviewers take turns editing the content of the assessment, and each saving (save button) can be thought of as an intermediate saving. "Note! It is therefore not always necessary to approve an assessment immediately if you want to use intermediate savings to help you make an assessment.

When the assessment is ready, the reviewers accepts it by “Approve evaluation” button. When the assessment is approved, the reviewer cannot make any changes to the assessment. The approval is made twice for the reviewer who first saved and approved the assessment, and for the second and third reviewer who registered on the assessment form, the assessment is usually approved only once. However, the reviewer's approval is revoked if another reviewer either modifies his or her own assessment portion (radio button selections in the assessment areas) or corrects the joint assessment (grade proposal, faculty-specific additional information, justification). Once all the reviewers have approved the assessment, the work automatically proceeds to the next step and the reviewers receive an e-mail from noreply address which includes the assessment form as a pdf file.

After this, the E-thesis officer at the local student service point will transfer the thesis pending the approval of the faculty council/degree programme steering group/grading committee meeting. This will be done no later than one week before the closing meeting. In this case, the student will receive an automatic message from the system with a reviewPDF attached. Once the final meeting has approved the evaluation of the thesis, the study advisor registers the performance in the study information system and transfers the thesis to the E-thesis archive. This will send the student an automatic message about the grading decision and the online publishing permit.

NOTE If an reviewer wants to notify other reviewer of changes to the assessment, he or she can use the comment feature. Adding a new comment (e.g. "I saved a preliminary version of a review") will email the information to other reviewers.

Registration and login of a new auditor outside the University of Helsinki

Persons who do not have University of Helsinki user IDs must register for the E-thesis service. Officers at student services will send an invitation to external examiners to register at the operational e-mail address provided through the E-thesis system. Follow the instructions in the email to create your own username.

The "Workflows" table lists all the jobs that the logged-in user is checking.

Job information can be accessed by clicking on the status "Under review" or the name of the job.

The "Tasks in the pool" table for inspectors is always empty. Inspectors also cannot return tasks to the job queue.

You can return to the "Workflows" page from the link at the top of the page, which is only visible to logged-in users.

Thesis information (main view of the evaluation)

General information The title of the page is the name of the work and below it the author (s) of the work. In the General Information section, you will find links to work-related files and the Ouriginal report, as well as the time limit set for the inspection.

Commenting Inspectors may write comments to each other for the sole purpose of communicating with each other. Comments are read-only by inspectors and are removed from the system at the end of the inspection phase.

A check mark in the "Approved" column means that the content of the review form has been approved by that reviewer.

Evaluation information

The "Assessment Guidelines" link takes you to the Faculty Examiners' instructions in the instructions for teaching.

The most important element of the evaluation information section is the evaluation form and related information. The system includes several evaluation forms tailored to different faculties. The evaluation forms for new master's theses contain both individual and joint examinations. If only one value is accepted in the evaluation form for each evaluation criterion, the selected values are shown in gray. In the evaluation form that accepts the examiner-specific values, the values stored by the examiner are color-coded according to the colors in the first column of the "reviewer" table. If both reviewers have selected the same value, the background color of the screen is black.

Edit evaluation

The evaluation can be edited by clicking the "Edit evaluation" button, which locks the form to the logged-in user. The lock is unlocked when the form data is saved or if the user returns to the “Job Details” page. If the user who locked the form does nothing or closes the browser without saving the form data, for example, the lock is unlocked automatically after 30 minutes.

On the "Job Information" page, the second examiner (s) will receive information about the form lock and the lock time.

It is not always necessary to approve an assessment immediately if you want to use intermediate savings to help you make an assessment. In this case, another reviewer can be notified of the cache they have made via the comment field.

If it takes more than 30 minutes to edit the form, the data can no longer be saved because the lock has been unlocked automatically and another reviewer may have been able to edit the form. Long texts (eg justifications) should be written in advance in another program and copied to the evaluation form. Another option is to save the data at appropriate intervals (<30 minutes).

Approving the evaluation locks the contents of the form for the logged-in user. However, the form will reopen for editing if another reviewer (or one of the other reviewers) changes the content of the review. The assessment must therefore be approved by both (all) reviewers in order to get the work to move forward in the process, that means to the faculty council/degree programme steering group/grading committee for further approval. The approve evaluation button is not activated if all selections are blank (-).

The system sends automatic e-mails to reviewers in the following situations:

  • reviewer request
  • one of the reviewers has approved the assessment (sent to others except the work approver)
  • one of the reviewers has edited the approved assessment (sent to the reviewer who had approved the assessment)
  • the evaluation of the work is complete and has moved to the next stage of processing
  • the reviewer adds a comment

For supervising professors and thesis advisors

  • Being a supervising professor or thesis advisor at Aalto University
  • Management of doctoral education at Aalto University
  • Agreeing on authorship
  • Pedagogical training: Doctoral Supervision (3 ECTS), autumn 2024

Roles and responsibilities

The supervising professor is an Aalto University professor who is responsible for overseeing the doctoral student's studies and may also be appointed to act as a thesis advisor. Thesis advisors have expertise in the subject area of the doctoral thesis, and one or more are appointed for each doctoral student.

If doctoral students have questions about supervision, their primary contact person is their supervising professor. If necessary, they can also contact the Doctoral education services .

Rights and responsibilities of doctoral students

When starting doctoral studies, the doctoral student commits to long-term goal-oriented study and research. The doctoral student has a right to study in accordance with the doctoral personal study plan and to receive knowledgeable guidance in his/her studies on a regular basis. In return for such guidance, the doctoral student commits to studying in accordance with the doctoral personal study plan. In addition, the doctoral student commits to acting in compliance with the guidelines of the National Advisory Board on Research Ethics on good scientific practice.

The responsibilities of the doctoral student are :

  • notifying the supervising professor of any changes necessary to DPSP, or of any problems with following the plan
  • negotiating with the supervising professor on the choice of research topic and preparing a thorough research proposal under the supervision of the supervising professor; giving an account of the objectives, contents, methods and schedule of the research
  • familiarising him/herself with the ethical principles of scientific research and acting in compliance with good scientific practice in his/her research
  • carrying out research independently and in a self-directed manner in accordance with the research proposal and within the limits of the research project
  • actively publishing results in the publication fora of the field
  • providing teaching related to the research field and communicating the results of his/her research to others
  • aiming at, together with the supervising professor, securing funding for the doctoral studies
  • reporting on the progress of the research to the supervising professor on a regular basis
  • annually enrolling at the university

Reponsibilities of the supervising professor and thesis advisor(s)

The supervising professor is in charge of the supervision arrangements for the doctoral student. The supervising professor is obligated to supervise those doctoral students who have enrolled as attending students, who have progressed in their studies according to their doctoral personal study plans, and who report on the progress of their studies on a regular basis. The supervising professor may either propose to assign some of the duties mentioned below to the thesis advisor(s) or also propose to act as the thesis advisor him/herself. What is said below of the duties of the supervising professor shall apply, as appropriate, also to the thesis advisor(s), where compliant with the division of responsibilities specified in the agreement.

The supervising professor is responsible for the supervision of the doctoral student and supports the implementation of the funding plan. The supervising professor provides guidance in the execution of the research and instructs the doctoral student in critical and independent thinking in research and artistic activities. The supervising professor encourages the doctoral student to actively publish his/her research results in the publication fora of the field of research/art in question, and guides him/her in publication writing. The supervising professor supports and encourages the doctoral student. The supervising professor is also responsible for ensuring that full-time doctoral students are not burdened excessively with duties other than doctoral research work. Participation in teaching is, however, part of doctoral education and obligatory for those with a doctoral researcher's employment contract (max 5%).

The supervising professor goes through and approves the doctoral personal study plan of the doctoral student. In addition, the supervising professor follows up on the progress of the studies and that of the research work on a regular basis: the supervising professor and the student discuss the progress of the studies on a regular basis , and the doctoral personal study plan is updated accordingly as necessary. At minimum, the plan is checked once a year. This follow-up requirement concerns full-time and part-time doctoral students in doctoral programmes.

The supervising professor is responsible for ensuring that the doctoral student is aware of good scientific practice and the ethical principles followed in his/her field of research as well as of the regulations concerning immaterial property rights, and monitors that the student adheres to such principles. To this end, the supervising professor and the doctoral student have a discussion at the start of their supervision relationship in order to look into the questions of research ethics and related practices relevant to the work of the student.

The supervising professor is responsible for ensuring that the doctoral student is aware of the requirements for a doctoral thesis and of the stages included in the preliminary examination and the public examination of the thesis. When the manuscript of the doctoral thesis is complete, it may only be submitted for preliminary examination after the supervising professor has issued a statement confirming that the manuscript is ready for preliminary examination. The supervising professor makes sure that the doctoral student makes the necessary corrections proposed to the doctoral thesis manuscript by the preliminary examiner(s). The preliminary examination can only start when course requirements are fulfilled.

The supervising professor assists the doctoral student in career planning , and ensures that the doctoral studies and research process equip the doctoral student with not only research skills but also transferable skills .

Who can act as supervising professor or thesis advisor?

Who can act as supervising professor?

A supervising professor must represent the research field (BIZ: major) of the doctoral student and is appointed by the Doctoral Programme Committee of the School. A supervising professor must be a tenure-track professor of the school, though for special reasons, the Dean of the School can decide that a non-tenure track professor with a doctor's degree may act as a supervising professor. A retired professor (e.g. Emeritus or Senior Advisor) cannot be appointed as supervising professor.

ELEC: If a non-tenure track professor is assigned as the supervising professor, also a deputy professor has to be assigned. The deputy professor has to be a tenure track professor of the research field, who takes over as the supervising professor, if the non-tenure track professor cannot continue the supervision until the doctoral student has graduated.

SCI: A deputy supervising professor has to be assigned always. The deputy professor has to be a tenure-track professor from the same department as the supervising professor.

In other Schools deputy professors can be assigned if necessary.

Who can act as thesis advisor? A thesis advisor must hold a doctoral degree. However, in ARTS, it is possible to appoint a second thesis advisor, who does not hold a doctor’s degree, based on artistic merit or competence in the area of research.

Co-supervisor

For special reasons, such as multidisciplinarity of the doctoral thesis or cotutelle agreement with a foreign university, an Aalto University professor, or a professor of some other Finnish or foreign university can be appointed by the Doctoral Programme Committee to share, together with the supervising professor, overall responsibility for the degree of the doctoral student and for the related supervision arrangements. The co-supervisor may also be appointed act as a thesis advisor.

Co-supervisior will be included in the supervision plan of the doctoral student.

See more information on co-supervision below.

If collaboration between doctoral student and supervising professor does not work

If your collaboration between doctoral student and supervising professor does not work, they can contact the Doctoral education services of their programme and discuss how to proceed. Here are a few choices:

  • Discussion between the doctoral student and supervising professor
  • Considering if an additional thesis advisor could be appointed (e.g. if the supervising professor is too busy).
  • Discuss with the Director of the doctoral programme
  • Discuss with HR at your department or the Head of the department
  • If the doctoral student wants a second opinion of something related to supervision, they can ask for a confidential “second opinion” from our ombudspersons. Check Ombudsperson for doctoral students | Aalto University
  • If the problem is severe and the code of conduct ( Code of Conduct) was not followed, first check Aalto University's instructions related to Preventing harassment and inappropriate conduct | Aalto University .

In challenging situations doctoral students can turn to Support for challenges during your doctoral studies .

Change of supervising professor, thesis advisor, research field, thesis topic or status

If the doctoral student's supervisory arrangements, research field, thesis topic or full-/part-time status change, the School must officially confirm the change. More information on full-/part-time status (aalto.fi)

The supervising professor is responsible for supervisory arrangements of their doctoral studetns and for making sure that the students have appointed thesis advisors. Supervisory arrangements can change e.g. if the supervising professor retires or another advisor needs to be appointed.

First the doctoral student and the supervising professor should discuss the change, and then submit the application form to the Doctoral education services of their doctoral programme.

Resources for challenging situations

Well-functioning relationships between supervising professor, thesis advisor and the doctoral student are of utmost importance during the doctoral studies. Doctoral students and their thesis advisors and supervising professors may face challenges stemming from i.e. the different national, cultural and organisational backgrounds of all participants, or differences in working styles or ways of expressing themselves. You can always turn to the Aalto University Code of Conduct for the ‘fair play rules’ of our university community.

Often doctoral students encounter some kind of challenging situations during their studies, and we hope to be able to give support through those situations.

You can also consult the Recommendations for doctoral thesis supervision by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (TENK) and Universities Finland UNIFI (external link).

Co-supervision within Aalto - division of doctoral education results

Under the Aalto funding model, the schools receive result-based funding based on the number of doctoral degrees awarded. Aalto University has agreed to enable the division of doctoral education results between its schools for the purposes of resource allocation under the Aalto funding model, in cases where the degree is produced jointly by two schools. The change is designed to boost doctoral-level collaboration between the Aalto schools and further the Aalto strategic goal of promoting multidisciplinary research.

It should be noted that the division of degrees is only a statistical tool developed for the purposes of the funding model. For the funding model the degree is divided so that both schools earn 0.5 degrees. The division of degrees does not have any other effects on the school-level statistics on doctoral degrees.

The division of doctoral degrees for funding purposes between the Aalto schools requires clear evidence of collaboration . Dividing a degree follows uniform principles in the university:

The doctoral student and the supervising professor are from the same school. In addition to the supervising professor, the doctoral student must have a co-supervising professor at the partner school.

A person who can act as a supervising professor in his/her own school can also act as a co-supervising professor.

The supervising professor and the co-supervising professor draft a joint proposal for dividing the degree between the schools in which the research work is done (evidence of collaboration). The freely formulated signed proposal and the supervision plan is sent to the doctoral programme of the school of the doctoral student.

  • The proposal must be made as early in the studies as possible (preferably with the application for doctoral studies).

The decision on dividing the doctoral degree with the partner school rests with the dean of the school of the doctoral student (since this school “gives up” 50% of the result-based funding for this degree). The decision of the dean is communicated to the doctoral programme of the partner school.

The doctoral student carries out the doctoral studies according to the process of his/her school and the degree will be awarded to the doctoral student only from his/her own school.

Only the name of the school of the doctoral student is mentioned on the doctoral thesis cover, but on the reverse of the title page the name of the co-supervising professor should be mentioned. The collaboration of the two schools can be mentioned e.g. in the preface or in the introduction part of the doctoral thesis.

Dividing doctoral degrees is an option for doctoral degrees earned at the beginning of 2015 or later. Thus the degree cannot be divided retrospectively.

SCI: Division of education result between departments

SCI Doctoral Programme Committee 15.9.2015

To boost doctoral level research collaboration between the departments of the School of Science the doctoral degree can be split between two departments in the funding model of the School. The division is only observed in the funding model, the degree still goes to the department of the supervising professor and the doctoral student.

  • The doctoral student and the supervising professor are from the same department. In addition to the supervising professor, the doctoral student must have a co-supervisor at the partner department.
  • The co-supervisor must be a tenure-track professor appointed in charge of a research field of his/her department .
  • The supervising professor and the co-supervisor draft a joint proposal for dividing the degree between the departments in which the research work is done (evidence of collaboration). The freely formulated signed proposal and the supervision plan is sent to the Student Services of the Doctoral Programme .
  • The decision on dividing the doctoral degree with the partner department rests with the Head of the department of the doctoral student (since this department “gives up” 50% of the result-based funding for this degree). The decision of the Head of department is sent to the doctoral programme. The Head of the department can e.g. sign the joint proposal made by the supervising professor and the co-supervisor.
  • The doctoral student carries out the doctoral studies according to the process of his/her department and the degree will be awarded to the student only from his/her own department.

Only the name of the department of the doctoral student is mentioned on the cover of the doctoral thesis, but on the reverse of the title page the name of the co-supervisor should be mentioned. The collaboration of the two departments can be mentioned e.g. in the preface or in the introduction part of the thesis.

MS in Computer Science

The official policies for this program may be found in the CS Handbook Supplement . If there is any conflict between this webpage and the official policies, then the official policies have precedence.

The Department of Computer Science offers a Master of Science in Computer Science degree and an  online MS in Computer Science program , both of which can be completed on a full-time or part-time schedule.

Students in the  Post-Baccalaureate or Certificate programs  may transfer some courses from any one of these programs (but not from more than one program) to the MS program. At most, two courses can be transferred from the GCAP program; there is no limit to the qualifying courses which may be transferred from the Post-Baccalaureate or Certificate programs. In particular, if the student is accepted to the MS program, then courses numbered above 100 (with a grade of B- or above) award graduate credit and qualify for transfer into the MS program.

The Department of Computer Science is the home department of the Bioinformatics track of the interdisciplinary master's program in  Bioengineering  at Tufts School of Engineering. For requirements and more information,  see Bioengineering website .

Master of Science in Computer Science Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 courses are required, each of 3 credits or more, of which at least 24 credits must be from approved courses. The remaining six credits may be earned from approved courses, or from conducting approved research or independent study, or from a combination of the two.
  • At least six courses must be in computer science, and at least two must include a serious programming component.
  • Grades in all courses must be B- or better. A student who received a grade below B- in CS 105, CS 160, or CS 170 as an undergraduate may retake the course for graduate credit.
  • To use courses offered outside the Department of Computer Science, the student must obtain the approval of the department.
  • Students focusing on an interdisciplinary area of CS may take fewer than eighteen CS credits, but this is subject to the approval of the department.
