Online Plagiarism Checker For Students

Writing an academic paper can be challenging when you’re not sure if it’s original enough to pass a plagiarism check. Of course, students take information from various sites before writing their own text. Sometimes, it just so happens that certain parts are very similar to your resources, making your professor think that you’ve just copied work from somewhere. That’s why it’s crucial for any modern college or university student to ensure that their work has 100% original content to maintain academic integrity.

Luckily, a free plagiarism checker online can solve this issue quickly and easily. Many cheap essay writing services use a plagiarism checker for research paper. However, students sometimes forget that they should too. But with so many options that pop up when you ask Google to “check my paper for plagiarism”, how do you choose the right one for detection? We’ve got the solution in the form of PapersOwl’s free plagiarism checker tool! Our simple tool makes it convenient to check any writing task without having to spend a dime. It works quickly and highly accurately, ensuring that you get the top grade you deserve. So, if you want to check plagiarism online before turning your task in, head over to our website and get started!

Accurate Check for Plagiarism with Percentage

Many students wishing to produce original content aren’t quite sure how to get an exact percentage of plagiarised text in their work. This percentage is important since many universities have a certain limit of non-unique words you can have in your essay for it to be considered okay. If your plagiarism search doesn’t give you the exact percentage, you can’t be sure if your assignment will go through or not.

When using a free plagiarism tool, it’s essential to have this data provided to you. Only when you have it can you decide which parts to change and which ones to chuck out to achieve your desired results. Plagiarized content is a big issue in modern educational institutions, so getting reliable and trustworthy results is vital. This is the most essential requirement when you check plagiarism.

PapersOwl’s plagiarism detection tool gives you all the information you need to fix plagiarized content. Whether you’ve fallen victim to accidental plagiarism or have tried to make your life easier by copying some text from different sources, you’ll get an accurate percentage with our plagiarism checker online. If you’re wondering how to check paper for plagiarism, it’s nothing complicated at all! Simply visit our site, paste your whole essay into the relevant text box or upload the text file, click on Check For Plagiarism, and you’ll get accurate plagiarism results in a matter of seconds. You’ll see the problematic parts with plagiarism detected highlighted, with links to where similar content exists. Our service with plagiarism detector will also give you the option to check my essay for plagiarism and then to hire a professional paper writer to fix your task quickly if you're busy with other things!

The Fastest Plagiarism Checker Online

Gaining insight into duplicate content only works if you get your results quickly. There are so many free plagiarism software online that promise to do the job for you. However, a lot of them are clunky, slow, and inaccurate. How can you produce original work without similarity detection you can trust?

PapersOwl stands out in this regard because it will detect plagiarism in seconds. This is a plagiarism scanner that’s able to perform a Swift Check to give you a uniqueness check right there and then. It also conducts a Deep Search, going through millions of sources on the internet to check for plagiarism. A document of about 1500 words takes only about 10 seconds to get processed! You get a clear plagiarism score of how much text is plagiarized and how much is original. All the sources that your essay matches are listed based on how much similarity there is in your academic writing. And on top of that, you get a handy Make It Unique button that’ll take you to an order page where you can ask our expert writers to rewrite your work and make it 100% unique.

All of this is done almost instantly, allowing students to continue do assignments without missing a beat. Not every plagiarism detection software works this quickly, making ours the best one you’ll ever use.

Plagiarism Checker Helps Boost Your Grade

A lot of students make the mistake of considering their papers automatically free from plagiarism. After all, they’ve written it themselves, so how could it be problematic? What they don’t realize is that it’s very easy to borrow some information mistakenly. Turning such a paper in can cause multiple problems, as your professor might think you haven’t done the work at all.

That is why you should always use a plagiarism scanner to test for plagiarized content in your college papers. Our online plagiarism checker for students is designed for this exact purpose. A simple, free plagiarism check could help you check plagiarism, fix any mistakes you see, and submit high-quality text that no one will question.

Our plagiarism detector has a lot going for it. It makes plagiarism detection easier than ever before. Unlike copying and pasting each passage individually into Google, simply upload the whole file into our plagiarism checker free for students, and you don’t have to do anything else. All the matches are highlighted so you know what to change.

The plagiarism test will give you a uniqueness percentage too. This will help you figure out where you stand and how much time you need to adjust anything if required. So, using our copyright checker online free to check your writing is essential. This way, you’ll submit the task only when you’re sure it meets the level of uniqueness required by your school. As a result, your grades will drastically improve when you check for plagiarism.

How Does Plagiarism Checker Work?

  • If you already have a completed text, all you need is just to copy-paste the whole thing in the special box of the chosen plagiarism tool or website, choose suitable settings (if any), then press “check for plagiarism”. It is quite simple and takes just a few moments.
  • Once you have pressed “check for plagiarism”, the system will analyze your text and compare it with different sources to find similarities. As a rule, the duration depends on the text’s length. A standard free online plagiarism checker with percentage can give you the result within five minutes or less.
  • When the system finishes the work you will be transmitted to the reporting page – it contains the comprehensive report on your work, a percentage of its uniqueness, and a list of sources on which similarities were detected. Often, such tools also highlight the overlaps that were found.

As you can see, it is simple. However, for the best and reliable result you have to be careful. There are tons of programs and online tools that can be used but keep in mind that many of them work differently and not all are good for you. To be confident in the truthfulness of the received result, you need to select the best plagiarism checker because only a professional and high-quality software can detect all similarities and give you a reasoned assessment.

Check for unintentional plagiarism

Easily check your paper for missing citations and accidental plagiarism with the EasyBib plagiarism checker. The EasyBib plagiarism checker:

  • Scans your paper against billions of sources.
  • Identifies text that may be flagged for plagiarism.
  • Provides you with a plagiarism score.

You can submit your paper at any hour of the day and quickly receive a plagiarism report.

What is the EasyBib plagiarism checker?

Most basic plagiarism checkers review your work and calculate a percentage, meaning how much of your writing is indicative of original work. But, the EasyBib plagiarism checker goes way beyond a simple percentage. Any text that could be categorized as potential plagiarism is highlighted, allowing you time to review each warning and determine how to adjust it or how to cite it correctly.

You’ll even see the sources against which your writing is compared and the actual word for word breakdown. If you determine that a warning is unnecessary, you can waive the plagiarism check suggestion.

Plagiarism is unethical because it doesn’t credit those who created the original work; it violates intellectual property and serves to benefit the perpetrator. It is a severe enough academic offense, that many faculty members use their own plagiarism checking tool for their students’ work. With the EasyBib Plagiarism checker, you can stay one step ahead of your professors and catch citation mistakes and accidental plagiarism before you submit your work for grading.

safe assignment plagiarism checker

Why use a plagiarism checker?

Imagine – it’s finals week and the final research paper of the semester is due in two days. You, being quite familiar with this high-stakes situation, hit the books, and pull together a ten-page, last-minute masterpiece using articles and materials from dozens of different sources.

However, in those late, coffee-fueled hours, are you fully confident that you correctly cited all the different sources you used? Are you sure you didn’t accidentally forget any? Are you confident that your teacher’s plagiarism tool will give your paper a 0% plagiarism score?

That’s where the EasyBib plagiarism checker comes in to save the day. One quick check can help you address all the above questions and put your mind at ease.

What exactly is plagiarism?

Plagiarism has a number of possible definitions; it involves more than just copying someone else’s work. Improper citing, patchworking, and paraphrasing could all lead to plagiarism in one of your college assignments. Below are some common examples of accidental plagiarism that commonly occur.

Quoting or paraphrasing without citations

Not including in-text citations is another common type of accidental plagiarism. Quoting is taking verbatim text from a source. Paraphrasing is when you’re using another source to take the same idea but put it in your own words. In both cases, it’s important to always cite where those ideas are coming from. The EasyBib plagiarism checker can help alert you to when you need to accurately cite the sources you used.

Patchwork plagiarism

When writing a paper, you’re often sifting through multiple sources and tabs from different search engines. It’s easy to accidentally string together pieces of sentences and phrases into your own paragraphs. You may change a few words here and there, but it’s similar to the original text. Even though it’s accidental, it is still considered plagiarism. It’s important to clearly state when you’re using someone else’s words and work.

Improper citations

Depending on the class, professor, subject, or teacher, there are multiple correct citation styles and preferences. Some examples of common style guides that are followed for citations include MLA, APA, and Chicago style. When citing resources, it’s important to cite them accurately. Incorrect citations could make it impossible for a reader to track down a source and it’s considered plagiarism. There are EasyBib citation tools to help you do this.

Don’t fall victim to plagiarism pitfalls. Most of the time, you don’t even mean to commit plagiarism; rather, you’ve read so many sources from different search engines that it gets difficult to determine an original thought or well-stated fact versus someone else’s work. Or worse, you assume a statement is common knowledge, when in fact, it should be attributed to another author.

When in doubt, cite your source!

Time for a quick plagiarism quiz!

Which of the following requires a citation?

  • A chart or graph from another source
  • A paraphrase of an original source
  • Several sources’ ideas summarized into your own paragraph
  • A direct quote
  • All of the above

If you guessed option E than you’d be correct. Correct punctuation and citation of another individual’s ideas, quotes, and graphics are a pillar of good academic writing.

What if you copy your own previous writing?

Resubmitting your own original work for another class’s assignment is a form of self-plagiarism, so don’t cut corners in your writing. Draft an original piece for each class or ask your professor if you can incorporate your previous research.

What features are available with the EasyBib plagiarism checker?

Along with providing warnings and sources for possible plagiarism, the EasyBib  plagiarism checker works alongside the other EasyBib tools, including a grammar checker  and a spell checker . You’ll receive personalized feedback on your thesis and writing structure too!

The  plagiarism checker compares your writing sample with billions of available sources online so that it detects plagiarism at every level. You’ll be notified of which phrases are too similar to current research and literature, prompting a possible rewrite or additional citation. You’ll also get feedback on your paper’s inconsistencies, such as changes in text, formatting, or style. These small details could suggest possible plagiarism within your assignment.

And speaking of citations, there are also  EasyBib citation tools  available. They help you quickly build your bibliography and avoid accidental plagiarism. Make sure you know which citation format your professor prefers!

Great! How do I start?

Simply copy and paste or upload your essay into the checker at the top of this page. You’ll receive the first five grammar suggestions for free! To try the plagiarism checker for free, start your EasyBib Plus three-day free trial.* If you love the product and decide to opt for premium services, you’ll have access to unlimited writing suggestions and personalized feedback.

Avoiding accidental plagiarism

You don't need a plagiarism checker, right?

You would never copy-and-paste someone else’s work, you’re great at paraphrasing, and you always keep a tidy list of your sources handy.

But what about accidental plagiarism ? It’s more common than you think! Maybe you paraphrased a little too closely, or forgot that last citation or set of quotation marks.

Even if you did it by accident, plagiarism is still a serious offense. You may fail your course, or be placed on academic probation. The risks just aren’t worth it.

Scribbr & academic integrity

Scribbr is committed to protecting academic integrity. Our plagiarism checker software, Citation Generator , proofreading services , and free Knowledge Base content are designed to help educate and guide students in avoiding unintentional plagiarism.

Safe Assign (Plagiarism Checking)

Safe Assign is a plagiarism detection and prevention tool that is part of Blackboard. It compares submitted assignments to the following sources:

  • Internet sources – public access sources
  • ProQuest database
  • Institutional document archives – any previously submitted documents from University of Rochester’s Blackboard system
  • Global Reference database – any submissions made voluntarily to a global database of all Blackboard customers

Note: University of Rochester is currently not providing students the opportunity to submit to the Global Reference database.

How To Create a SafeAssignment  (PDF)

How To Read Your Report (PDF)

The University of Rochester highly recommends that instructors provide students with the option to view their reports before final submission and to exclude these initial submissions from being stored in the institutional database. Check with your Blackboard support to learn more about how to allow this.

The University of Rochester also discourages the use of the Direct Submit option. Students should be aware that their papers are being submitted to the system to be checked for plagiarism. Direct Submit bypasses this step.

Please note that once submitted, the Safe Assign Originality Report may take some time to process. Processing can take anywhere from minutes to days, depending on the volume of submissions to the central system. During busy times in the academic year (midterms and end of semester) the process is subject to take longer.

Note: Safe Assign is a Blackboard shared, hosted solution and is subject to its own maintenance periods and downtimes. University of Rochester has no control over these. When University of Rochester is made aware of any maintenance or downtimes, they will be posted in Announcements.

Note that you must first turn on the Safe Assign tools in your course before the options in the documentation become available. Tools can be turned on under Customization, Tool Availability.

About the Originality Report

The system generates an originality report that offers suggestions about possible sources of plagiarism. Please note that this is not definitive, nor comprehensive; the instructor still needs to review the submission.

Risks of False Positives:

  • Does not always distinguish properly quoted material
  • Cannot distinguish between common phrases and truly proprietary expressions

Risks of False Negatives:

  • Limited search
  • Cannot detect disguised plagiarism

Results returned in a SafeAssign Originality Report may not be identical to results returned by a consumer internet search service (e.g. Google, Bing, etc.) for any individual sentence or phrase. The results from the SafeAssign service are only meant to be a tool for use at the discretion of the teacher or instructor. Due to the size and scope of both academic subject matter and the number of resources searched by SafeAssign, the results are not meant to guarantee or otherwise indicate that plagiarism has or has not occurred. The assessment of potential plagiarism should reside in the hands of the instructor, and SafeAssign results should always be considered in the context of other resources and good judgment.

SafeAssign does not distinguish between direct quotations and text lifted from a source; students who are quoting correctly will likely have reports that indicate overlap with these sources. The reports are easy to read because these instances are easily noted.

Conversely, SafeAssign does not catch essays that include plagiarized ideas or concepts, nor can it detect uncited paraphrasing that dramatically changes the wording of an original source while maintaining that source’s organization and/or sentence structure.

The implications of originality reports are not always self-evident. Teachers need to discuss the interpretation of these reports with students and allow students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the tool.

If you have questions about interpreting the originality report, please contact a librarian or your academic honesty office.

More on Originality Reports

FERPA and HIPAA Policy Information

FERPA considerationsAccording to FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, education records that identify students without their consent may not be disclosed to third parties.

  • Students should be advised to remove their name and any personal information (name, SSN, Student ID) from within the paper and title page, or the header or footer before submitting assignments to Safe Assign.
  • If a student wants to voluntarily leave their name on their paper, they may do so.

Additionally, this “cloud” service is not HIPAA compliant, therefore assignments that contain patient information should not be created with Safe Assignment and students should not be asked to submit papers containing patient information.

Plagiarism Prevention Strategies

The following are tips on preventing plagiarism:

  • Require multiple drafts of assignments before final submission
  • Design original assignments that are hard to plagiarize
  • Provide aids to comprehension of complex texts
  • Provide multiple low-stakes assignments
  • Provide clear guidance on preventing plagiarism

Guidelines for Use

Use SafeAssign as part of a balanced approach to encourage academic integrity and foster student success:

  • by providing clear instructions and guidance for assignments
  • by encouraging students to manage time and make progress prior to deadlines for submission of graded assignments
  • by making other resources known to students (e.g., writing center)
  • by using it as a deterrent, not as a “caught you” enforcement tool

Openly disclose the use of SafeAssign for this course on the syllabus and at the time assignments are announced, including clarifying the choices made about retention of student work (Local, or No-Retention).

For any given assignment:

  • use SafeAssign for all papers;
  • not submit papers arbitrarily to SafeAssign, for the purpose of reviewing originality reports for papers deemed “suspicious;”
  • or consider exceptions for specific students, who may object to the retention of their work by SafeAssign, working with the University Ombudsperson to resolve any conflict

Faculty should make the final determination of originality and integrity. The originality reports, and the machine judgment that generates them, provide a set of useful resources for comparison. However, there is no substitute for human judgment and assessment prior to generating feedback for students or making a determination about honesty and integrity.

To ensure privacy, please ask students to remove identification (e.g., names and student numbers) from submissions because:

  • Blackboard will automatically show student’s names to assignments when instructors are viewing, or downloading.
  • removing the identifying information from the document allows it to be preserved in the repository without affecting the student’s educational privacy.

When it comes to academic plagiarism, teachers and students alike need to have versatile tools on their side not just to find instances of plagiarism but also to prevent it before ever turning the paper in. That’s where the SafeAssign plagiarism checker comes in. But does it really do the job? We take a closer look with our in-depth SafeAssign plagiarism checker review.

safe assignment plagiarism checker

SafeAssign is a plagiarism detection tool owned by Blackboard, a popular LMS ( learning management system ) in many colleges and universities. Although it is an integral part of Blackboard, SafeAssign also works with the Canvas LMS and is used extensively by instructors as a part of the evaluation process.

How Does SafeAssign Plagiarism Checker Work?

When a student submits a document to SafeAssign, the plagiarism checker goes to work, analyzing other academic and online sources to determine if there is a match. Not only can it alert professors of any possible instances of plagiarism, but it can also help students properly cite and reference their sources when writing their papers.

Why Use SafeAssign’s Plagiarism Checker?

Many instructors use SafeAssign because it is tightly and conveniently integrated into their school’s LMS. This, in turn, promotes a culture of academic integrity in the classroom. In addition, students can rely on SafeAssign to help them properly cite their sources as well as improve the quality of their writing by formulating their own ideas rather than taking them from elsewhere.

Its objective feedback helps students avoid inadvertent (or purposeful) plagiarism while giving them the tools they need to write with greater confidence.

What are Some SafeAssign Features?

As with many online plagiarism checkers, SafeAssign leverages a wide range of academic journals and websites to check for a variety of forms of plagiarism. In addition, schools can create an institutional database of student-submitted papers to help instructors dissuade students from writing essays or reports for each other.

By identifying patterns in writing styles and tones, instructors can help uncover plagiarism at the source, helping to preserve academic integrity within the institution.

SafeAssign also features DirectSubmit, a method wherein instructors can check papers outside of the school’s chosen LMS. Rather than submitting papers through the LMS, which are then checked with SafeAssign, students can upload their papers directly to SafeAssign.

Instructors can also use SafeAssign beyond its plagiarism-checking features and use it for rubrics, grading, and commenting on each student’s work individually.

How Does SafeAssign’s Algorithm Work?

SafeAssign’s algorithm works by comparing the work you’ve submitted to its database of academic journals and online sources . It first extracts text and removes all formatting including headers, footers, and citations to get only the main part of the paper.

It then creates a digital fingerprint of your text using a “hash” or a type of mathematical algorithm . This is unique to your paper and is used to compare it to different sources. It then compares this digital fingerprint to content submitted by other users as well as its own database of journals and websites, looking for matching or similar text.

Finally, when the process is complete, SafeAssign creates an originality report that highlights any areas of potential plagiarism along with a percentage of similarity. It also includes a list of sources. From there, the instructor can look at the report to determine if a reference was improperly cited or if plagiarism has occurred.

How to Use SafeAssign Step-by-Step

  • Log in to your school’s learning management system (Blackboard or Canvas)
  • Create an assignment for the course that you want to use SafeAssign on.
  • Give the assignment a title, instructions, and relevant details like how many points it’s worth and when it’s due
  • Click on the “Enable SafeAssign” option which will enable plagiarism checking for that assignment
  • Choose whether or not you want students to be able to view their originality reports. If you do, they’ll see the report after they submit the document which can help them improve.
  • Select any other assignment settings, then save and post the assignment

Students will then submit assignments through the LMS as normal and SafeAssign will check them for plagiarism.

How to Get the Most Out of SafeAssign Plagiarism Checker

In order to get the most out of SafeAssign, it’s important to read its reports carefully. False positives are possible with any plagiarism tool, so it’s important to not only look at the percentage of matching text but also look at the highlighted text to determine if something has been plagiarized.

SafeAssist is an excellent teaching tool that can show students how to properly cite their work and improve their writing as a whole.

Troubleshooting Common Issues with SafeAssign Plagiarism Checker

As with any plagiarism checker, there is always the potential for false positives , however being that SafeAssign is a tool used primarily in academic settings there are also other common complaints with the system, namely that it gives a student a grade of 0 if an assignment is late. To help with this issue, ensure students are aware of the deadline and update SafeAssign settings to be sure that they are configured correctly.

In some cases, there may be technical issues such as incorrect grades or other technical hiccups. If these happen, it’s important to contact your school’s vendor promptly to resolve any issues that might be affecting the program’s performance .

How Does SafeAssign Compare To Originality.ai?

Both SafeAssign and Originality.ai are plagiarism detection tools, however, SafeAssign is primarily used for academia and Originality.ai is geared toward content publishers, writers, and website owners. In addition, SafeAssign only works to detect plagiarism and cannot detect AI-written content, whereas Originality.ai can detect content that has been written by ChatGPT and other AI writing programs.

How Does Originality.ai’s Algorithm Work?

With the newly released 2.0.1 Standard (BETA) model, the Originality.ai checker can now detect AI-written content with 99%+ accuracy. Then, Version Lite 1.0.0, with an under 1% false positive rate, allows for light AI editing (such as with Grammarly). Learn more about AI detection accuracy in our guide.

Should You Use SafeAssign’s Plagiarism Checker?

Comparing SafeAssign and Originality.ai is like apples and oranges. Although both incorporate plagiarism checkers, the audience is markedly different. Although academia now has a stronger need than ever to fight back against AI-written and plagiarized content, SafeAssign can only help in one area of the multi-pronged problem.

Originality.ai checks documents for plagiarism and AI-written content. You can opt to scan for AI-generated content, plagiarism, and readability together using the Originality.ai Content Scanner . Alternatively, you can select to simply scan for plagiarism with the Plagiarism Checker .

In either case, scanning content for AI, plagiarism, or both presents an excellent opportunity to promote academic integrity.

‍ Note : False positives can occur with AI detection, always review content that is flagged as AI carefully in academic settings.

SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention tool that detects unoriginal content in students' papers by identifying areas of overlap between submitted assignments and existing works. SafeAssign can also be used to help students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase without giving credit to the original source. The SafeAssign feature is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool.

Note: Delays in SafeAssign occur throughout the semester based on high demand. Please DO NOT have students resubmit papers as this pushes them to the back of the queue. Blackboard currently reports as much as 24-36 hours or more may elapse before report results are returned.

How SafeAssign Works

Enabling safeassign.

  • SafeAssign Assessment Reports

Interpreting SafeAssign Scores

The SafeAssign feature is based on a unique text matching algorithm capable of detecting both exact and inexact matches between a submitted paper and a particular source material. Assignments submitted to the SafeAssign database are compared with several different databases, including the following:

  • Internet: Comprehensive index of documents available for public access on the Internet
  • ProQuest ABI/Inform database: More than 1,100 publication titles and about 2.6 million articles from 1990's to present time, updated weekly (exclusive access)
  • Institutional document archives: Contains all papers submitted to SafeAssign by users in their respective institutions
  • Global Reference Database: Contains papers that were volunteered by students from Blackboard client institutions to help prevent cross-institutional plagiarism

Assignments accept every possible file type as an attachment to a submission. SafeAssign will only process and create Originality Reports for attachments with compatible file types. SafeAssign is only able to support file types that are convertible to plain text including the following file types: .docx; .doc; .pdf; .txt; .odt; .rtf; .html; .htm; and .zip (processing files that match any of these file types within the .zip). However, Learn Assignment's Inline Grading feature only supports the following subset of file types: .pptx; .ppt; .xlsx; .xls; .docx; .doc; and .pdf. SafeAssign will only process and create Originality Reports for attachments that match the above file types. For unsupported file types, the SafeAssign Originality Report will omit a matching score. This information is visible in the right-hand navigation bar of the new Originality Report.

These two lists of compatible file types mean that there are only certain file types that can be displayed in the Inline Grading workflow and processed by SafeAssign. Below is a Venn diagram outlining which file types support both features:

Enabling SafeAssign in Original Course View

Screenshot highlighting how to enable SafeAssign within an Assignment

Enable the SafeAssign tool during Assignment creation and editing, under the Submission Details section.

Faculty have the option to Exclude Submissions when creating an Assignment. This option will allow faculty to create Assignments that do not include any student submissions in the Institutional or Global Reference Databases, enabling students to "check their work" against SafeAssign sources prior to submitting a final version without subsequently revised drafts being flagged as matching the previous "draft" submissions. Like other options on Assignments, this option will be point-in-time and editable after assignment creation. If the option were changed at a later date, new submissions would honor the new state of the setting.

Enabling SafeAssign in Ultra Course View

Enable SafeAssign in the settings panel while creating an Assignment or a Test.

  • Open Assignment Settings or Test Settings in a new or existing assessment.
  • Under SafeAssign , select Enable Originality Report .
  • When you enable SafeAssign for the assessment, you can also allow students to view the Originality Report. If you allow multiple attempts, an Originality Report is generated for each attempt a student submits.
  • Choose whether to exclude submissions from the institutional and Global Reference Databases.
  • Close the layer. Your changes are saved!

You can enable the SafeAssign Originality Report at any time, even after students have started their submissions, but submissions are only checked when SafeAssign is enabled. Submissions received before you enable the setting aren't checked with SafeAssign.

SafeAssign Doesn't Generate a Report when Filename Has Special Characters

Please note that assignment submissions with special characters (i.e., #,:,*,space, etc.) are not evaluated by SafeAssign and will not generate a report.

It is recommended that users only include numbers, letters, hyphens, and underscores in their filenames. In cases where student users have already made a submission, change the assignment setting to allow multiple submissions and then ask them to resubmit the document after making the appropriate filename change.

  • SafeAssign Originality Reports

After a paper has been processed, an Originality Report will be available that will show the percentage of text in the submitted paper that matches existing sources. It also shows the suspected sources of each section of the submitted paper that returns a match. The faculty can then delete matching sources from the report and process it again. This procedure is useful to ascertain if the paper is a continuation of a previously submitted work by the same student.

Because the SafeAssign feature identifies all matching blocks of text, it is important that the faculty reads the report carefully and determines whether or not the block of text in question is properly attributed.

Click here for more details about the Originality Report

The sentence matching scores represent the percentage probability that two phrases have the same meaning. This number can also be interpreted as the reciprocal to the probability that these two phrases are similar by chance. For example, a score of 90 percent means that there is a 90 percent probability that these two phrases are the same and a 10 percent probability that they are similar by chance and not because the submitted paper includes content from the existing source (whether or not it is appropriately attributed).

The overall score is an indicator of what percentage of the submitted paper matches existing sources. Please note that this score is a warning indicator only and it is the faculty’s responsibility to review the papers carefully to see if the matches are properly attributed.

  • Scores below 15 percent: These papers typically include some quotes and few common phrases or blocks of text that match other documents. These papers typically do not require further analysis, as there is no evidence of the possibility of plagiarism in these papers.
  • Scores between 15 percent and 40 percent: These papers include extensive quoted or paraphrased material or they may include plagiarism. These papers should be reviewed to determine if the matching content is properly attributed.
  • Scores over 40 percent: There is a very high probability that text in this paper was copied from other sources. These papers include quoted or paraphrased text in excess and should be reviewed for plagiarism.

Frequently Asked Questions

SafeAssign can be used in two ways.

  • Faculty Members can set up SafeAssignments in their courses on Blackboard and let students submit papers to complete these assignments, in a way very similar to the Assignmnent tool provided by Blackboard Learning System. The papers will then be delivered to Faculty Members through the Blackboard Learning System together with the SafeAssign Originality Reports, which details the results of the matching process.
  • Faculty Members may upload papers directly, without student involvement through the Direct Submit feature.

What information does SafeAssign provide in its reports? A SafeAssign Originality Report highlights any blocks of text in submitted documents that match reference sources, and links back to the matching documents on the Internet or in supported content databases. SafeAssign reports also show similarity ratings for each matching sentence and allow Faculty Members to view a line-by-line comparison of potentially unoriginal text from submitted papers and the matching external documents.

If intructors enable student viewing, each student can view the reports for their own submitted papers.

SafeAssign currently checks all submitted papers against the following databases:

  • Internet - comprehensive index of billions of documents available for public access on the Internet;
  • ProQuest ABI/Inform database with over 1,100 publication titles and about 2.6 million articles from '90s to present time, updated weekly (exclusive access);
  • Institutional document archives containing all papers submitted to SafeAssign by users in their respective institutions;
  • Global Reference Database containing papers that were volunteered by students from Blackboard client institutions to help prevent cross-institutional plagiarism.

What is the Institutional Database? The Institutional Database is the archive of papers submitted by students in your institution. Each institution's Institutional Database is stored in the central SafeAssign service and kept separate from other institution's databases. Papers are automatically added to this database upon submission and are stored in the central service to be checked against other papers submitted from your institution. The Institutional Database is completely separate from the Global Reference Database which extends across institutions and students must volunteer their papers to.

Can SafeAssign process papers written in languages other than English? SafeAssign can generate originality reports for papers written in all alphabet-based languages with left-to-right writing. The user interface is currently only available in English.

Who owns the intellectual property rights for each submitted paper? Blackboard does not claim any ownership rights on the content submitted to SafeAssign.

How long does it take to generate originality reports? Reports are not generated instantaneously - it usually takes from several seconds to few minutes to receive a report. During peak use (such as the end of the semester), it can sometimes take several hours.

What file formats does SafeAssign support? SafeAssign supports Word (.doc or .docx), plain text (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), .pdf, and .html formats. In addition, supported file types can be compressed to a .zip file for Direct Submit.

What is the file size limit for files submitted to SafeAssign? There is a 10 MB limit on all files submitted to SafeAssign. This applies to individual student uploads to Assignments with SafeAssign enabled as well as .zip files of multiple papers uploaded by faculty using the Direct Submit feature (in which case the .zip file must be under 10 MB). Unfortunately, this limit is set by the SafeAssign servers, which are managed by Blackboard, so it cannot be overridden.

How does the Global Reference Database work? Blackboard's Global Reference Database is a separate database where students voluntarily donate copies of their papers to help prevent plagiarism. It is separated from each institution's internal database, where all papers are stored by each corresponding institution, and students are free to select the option to check their papers without submitting them to the Global Reference Database.

What if a student decides to remove a paper from the Global Reference Database? Students submit their papers to the database voluntarily and agree not to remove papers in the future.

Are students forced to submit papers to the Global Reference Database either by Blackboard or NIU? All papers are submitted to the Global Reference Database voluntarily, and students are free to choose not to submit their papers to this database. Faculty Members can still use the service effectively, even when students choose not to submit their papers to the Global Reference Database.

What is the SafeAssign "Synchronize this Course" option that appears in the "Direct Submit" area? The synchronize function is to deal with breaks in communication or to update a course which is based on a template or has been copied. It is a good idea for the faculty member to click on this when first using SafeAssign and to periodically update it or update if any course level issues arise. It simply synchronizes the papers in the course with the SafeAssign central database, ensuring the correct associations exist between the course and our central database.

Can students directly submit a draft assignment to check without having it deployed as a SafeAssignment via the instructor or having it be tied to the Grade Center in Blackboard? There is the option to make an assignment a draft. In this case, as mentioned above, the paper is not checked into the institutional database.

Why did SafeAssignment scores in the Grade Center get deleted after the students submitted their assignments? Make sure to enter SafeAssignment scores in the Grade Center after the students submit their assignments. Scores assigned prior to SafeAssignment submission are deleted when students submit their assignments. If paper assignments are collected together with a Blackboard SafeAssign feature, make sure to enter student grades after they have submitted their assignments electronically through SafeAssign.

It is possible to download all of the files that the students submitted to a SafeAssignment. This does not include the originality reports. Those must be viewed within Blackboard directly.

To download all of the submitted files:

  • From the course with the SafeAssignment, open Course Tools in the Control Panel
  • Click SafeAssign
  • On the next page, choose SafeAssignments
  • Move your mouse cursor over the SafeAssignment you are interested in. When the Action Link appears, click it and choose View Submissions from the menu
  • Click the Download All Submissions button at the top of the page

Your browser will download a .zip folder that has all of the submissions. You can open the folder or extract the files to read the individual submissions.

Checking for Plagiarism

How to check your work for plagiarism.

Your assignments must reflect your original thoughts and ideas, and you must properly cite information from sources. When you do not properly cite sources, that’s plagiarism.

Your assignment submissions will automatically be checked for plagiarism by SafeAssign, a feature in your online classroom. SafeAssign compares your submission to a database of student work and the internet and then generates an Originality Report that you and your instructor can review. This is to help you identify any information included in your assignment that you may not have properly cited.

Note: Remember that assignments based on worksheets or templates will often lead to high risk scores and text matching percentages even when the student has submitted original work. Please reach out to your instructor if you have any questions or concerns regarding this.

If you need help with citations, we’ve got your back! Check out the Understand Citations page in the University Library.

  • You are required to submit only your own original work with proper citations for external sources quoted in that work.
  • Your instructor will see a report for every submission.
  • Copied or purchased assignments are likely to be caught, and this can result in a Code of Conduct violation, which can lead to a failing course grade, suspension, or even expulsion from the University.

Complete the following steps to check your work for plagiarism:

  • Submit your assignment and then close out of the assignment.
  • Open your assignment again and view the Details & Information panel.
  • If the report is not ready, you will see Originality Report in progress.
  • If the report is ready, select View Originality Report to view the summary, which shows how much of your work matches the work of others.

safe assignment plagiarism checker

  • Select Additional content under the Originality Reports section for the detailed report.

safe assignment plagiarism checker

  • Review the information in the detailed report, which includes sources and highlights the sections of your assignment that match content found in other sources. Use the report to make any changes necessary to ensure you have properly cited all work that is not your own. You may resubmit your assignment as many times as the setting in the online classroom allows.

Identify Copied Material with Anti Plagiarism Software

Plagiarism can appear in different forms, but the end outcome is always the same: the plagiarist stole something from another person. Plagiarism refers to using some other person’s ideas and information without acknowledging that specific person as the source. Similar to all other forms of theft, plagiarism also has many disadvantages associated with it.

It can take place in both intentional, when you try to pass someone’s content as your own, or unintentional when you forget to mention the source for your work correctly. In spite of the kind, piracy always has consequences when it is discovered. Mostly, the punishment of accidental copying is temporary. Because ascertaining unintentional plagiarism requires knowledge of intent, the overall prestige of the plagiarist becomes the deciding factor.

Plagiarism can occur in any shape either textual or pictorial. So we not only scan the document for the copyrights but also check the duplication for images. You can also perform Reverse Image Search to look for the best matching photos. By using advance image recognition algorithms, it will bring out the matching results from all over the internet and search engines.

Before jumping to direct consequences, here’s a brief detail of how can you make sure your work is not matching with any source. Loads of information, millions of text documents, is attainable on the internet now. So, if you think you can check manually, then you are wrong. No matter, how many articles you read or how many hours you spend, you can never be sure. Hence, the alternative best way you can take help from is a free plagiarism detector. There are many such tools readily available on the internet, providing best services to users. Majority of them, search your material against billions of contents and underlines each sentence which resembles with another posted article.

SafeAssign is a student submissions originality checker provided by Blackboard which helps identify plagiarism by detecting unoriginal content in student submissions. It does so by comparing student submissions to a range of internet resources, articles and other students’ submissions. In addition to acting as a plagiarism deterrent, this can help students learn about plagiarism and the importance of proper attribution of any borrowed content.

Getting Started

SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention service offered by Blackboard. SafeAssign is a useful tool in educating students about plagiarism and the importance of proper citation for borrowed content.

Papers submitted to SafeAssign are compared against  several databases  to identify areas of overlap between the submission and existing works. In Blackboard, you can use SafeAssign in two ways.

  • SafeAssign in Assignments

SafeAssign is integrated into regular Blackboard Assignments so almost all of the regular assignment features are available with the SafeAssign service.

Students submit papers to an Assignment with SafeAssign plagiarism checking enabled. The papers are then checked against the SafeAssign databases and delivered, along with a corresponding Originality Report, to instructors in Blackboard. Instructors can choose to make these reports viewable to students.  Learn more about using SafeAssign in Assignments .

  • SafeAssign Direct Submit

Instructors and TAs may also choose to check papers without student involvement using SafeAssign Direct Submit. Upload one file at a time or a .zip file with many papers and view the matching report, which is not shared with students.  Learn more about using SafeAssign Direct Submit .

SafeAssign is integrated into Blackboard Assignments.

  • Navigate to any Content Area (i.e., a course menu item like Assignments, Tests, etc).
  • Click  Assessments  and choose  Assignment .
  • On the  Create Assignment  page, expand  Submission Details .
  • Select  Check submissions for plagiarism using SafeAssign .
  • Allow students to view the SafeAssign originality reports on their submissions.
  • Exclude all student submissions for this assignment from the Institutional or Global References Databases.
  • Complete the  Create Assignment  page.
  • Click  Submit .

If you have additional questions about SafeAssign, contact the Instructional Technology Lab . Staff is available during open lab hours or by appointment.

Submitting to SafeAssign

SafeAssign only supports file types that are convertible to plain text such as DOCX, DOC, PPT, PPTX, PDF, TXT, ODT, RTF, HTML, and HTM. Spreadsheet files are not supported.

Before submitting to SafeAssign be sure to remove any special characters (“, #, @, %, &, etc.) or spaces from the file name.

Yes. SafeAssign can only process submitted files smaller than 10MB.

Yes. If more than one attempt is allowed, the report includes attachments for all attempts. Additionally, SafeAssign recognizes each new attempt as originating from the same student for the same assignment, so it doesn't check the new attempt against content in previous attempts.

Yes, however, SafeAssign Reports are not included with the downloaded files. Reports must be viewed in Blackboard.

  • Go to the  Full Grade Center  and find the Assignment column.
  • Click the arrow next to the column title and select  Assignment File Download .
  • Select the checkboxes next to each student’s name.
  • Click  Submit . The documents can then be downloaded to your computer in a .zip file.

Learn more about downloading Blackboard Assignment submissions .

Instructors can submit files through DirectSubmit to generate SafeAssign reports on papers not uploaded to an Assignment.

  • Go to the  Control Panel  of your course.
  • Click  Course Tools  and select  SafeAssign .
  • Click  Direct Submit .
  • Click  Submit a Paper  and upload the file(s).

Learn more about using SafeAssign's Direct Submit feature .

Cookies must be enabled in the browser before submitting to SafeAssign. If they are not, students will receive an error indicating they are not logged in, the session has timed out, or do not have appropriate privileges.

Users experiencing issues should follow the instructions linked below to enable third-party cookies in their browser.

  • Enable and Disable Cookies in Safari .
  • Enable and Disable Cookies in Firefox .
  • Enable and Disable Cookies in Chrome .

If a student still can’t submit, instruct students to remove all special characters (“, #, @, %, &, etc.) and spaces from the file name before submitting.

Contact the Instructional Technology Lab  for additional assistance.

SafeAssign Reference Databases

  • A comprehensive index of documents publicly available on the Internet.
  • ProQuest and ABI/Inform databases.
  • Institutional document archives containing all papers submitted by users at GW.

Learn more about how SafeAssign works .

This is the archive of papers submitted by students in your institution. Papers are automatically added to this database upon submission, stored, and used to check against other papers submitted from that institution.

Each institution's Institutional Database is kept separate from that of other institutions. It is also completely separate from the Global Reference Databases, which extends across institutions and to which students must volunteer their papers.

Yes, when creating a SafeAssignment you can choose to Exclude submissions from the Institutional and Global References Databases in the Submission Details section. In this case, the paper is not submitted to the Institutional Database, but a SafeAssign Originality Report is still generated.

SafeAssign Reports

The SafeAssign service is run and hosted by Blackboard. Typically, the service returns SafeAssign reports within a few minutes, but during busy periods it may take several hours for reports to appear in Blackboard.

  • Overall matching percentage and specific text that matches reference sources.
  • Line-by-line comparison of the potentially unoriginal text with the matching external documents.
  • Similarity ratings for each matching sentence.

SafeAssign may include correctly cited quotations and information in the report if they are found in previously submitted papers. Therefore, instructors should carefully check each report to determine if the matches are properly cited and if plagiarism has occurred.

It is key to remember that SafeAssign is an informative tool that does not replace instructor experience and discernment. It is the instructor who will determine if plagiarism has occurred and which next steps are required.

Learn more about the SafeAssign Originality Report .

SafeAssign does not state whether a paper is plagiarized, but only identifies content in a paper that matches content from another source. It is up to the instructor and ultimately the academic department to determine if plagiarism has occurred.

When instructors create an assignment and choose to use SafeAssign, they can determine if students can view the report for their submitted paper.

After enabling SafeAssign for an Assignment, select the option  Allow students to view SafeAssign originality report for their attempts .

Safe Assign

SafeAssign is a tool that students can use to ensure that they cite their written work properly, and one that you can use to check their work for accidental or intentional plagiarism after they submit it. Many students commit plagiarism unintentionally because they don't understand the rules, or because it's so easy to do a copy/paste from a digital source.

Be sure to reference the academic integrity policies in the NAU Student Handbook and dedicate some time to discussing what plagiarism means and what the consequences can be.

You might recommend the Academic Integrity course built by e-Learning. Share this self-enrollment link (https://nau.edu/bb-self-enroll/227890) and the course will appear in the student's Bb Learn My Courses list.

Encourage your students to follow these three general rules to avoid accidental plagiarism:

  • Unless a passage of text is in quotes, the source text should be re-stated in your own words, and credit should still be given.
  • Direct quotes should be used sparingly, and only for very important passages of text.
  • Unless a statement is common knowledge, you should cite the source of the idea.

If you have additional rules, be specific. For example, is there a particular citation style such as APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. that you expect them to use? Give them some examples of proper citation.

We encourage you to review the rules and consequences with them, and to have them check their writing using the Safe Assign Originality Report before they submit their work to you for final grading. Checking student writing through an interative process of rough drafts with feedback discourages procrastination, and helps students to improve their writing.

Important Note : Safe Assign calls the score the students get an "Originality Report" and it will be a percentage score from 0% to 100%. This is unfortunate wording because a higher score is lower in originality. Emphasize that a score of 100% means the paper is entirely plagiarized. Lower scores are better!

One final piece of advice: If possible, design your assignment so that it is less of a "fact dump" and more of a thinking question, or a defense of a point of view, or an opinion on a controversial topic. This makes it harder to plagiarize, more interesting for you (you don't have to read a bunch of versions of the same report) and it makes it easier to tell if your students have a grasp of the content. For a history paper, don't ask for a biography of Abraham Lincoln, but instead ask students to write about the difficult decisions he made and what they would have done in his shoes. For a biology paper, don't ask what material is stored in the gall bladder and what it's function is, but instead ask what is the effect on the body when the gall bladder is surgically removed. This is much more difficult to Google and come up with an intelligible answer.

To create a Safe Assignment:

  • Log into Bb Learn and navigate to your course.
  • In the upper right of the screen, make sure Edit Mode is ON .
  • From the Assessments menu, select Assignment .
  • On the Create Assignment page,  expand   Submission Details .
  • Under Plagiarism Tooks , select   Check submissions for plagiarism using SafeAssign .
  • Allow students to view the SafeAssign originality reports on their submission s. (We generally recommend this.)
  • Exclude all student submissions for this assignment from the institutional or global reference databases . (We generally don't recommend this.)
  • Specify the other information about the assignment.
  • Click   Submit

Direct Submit gives you the option of manually submitting one or many (you'll first need to compress them in a .ZIP archive) papers manually. A good use case for this is if you see some suspicious text in a Discussion post, for example, and want to check it for originality.

  • In the Blackboard course with the Edit Mode on,  select   Course Tools  and then  SafeAssign.
  • Select   DirectSubmit.  This brings you to your Direct Submit console.
  • If you have already uploaded papers, a list of folders and papers will appear. This list includes papers already uploaded through Direct Submit. It is not recommended that files be deleted from Direct Submit, as this will remove them from the institutional database of existing materials.
  • Type  in a new folder name to help differentiate papers uploaded for different assignments or reasons.  Click   Add , and then navigate to a folder or create a new folder where the paper or papers will be uploaded. Note: Papers added to folders in the Private tab are only viewable you you, the instructor. Papers added to folders in the Shared tab are viewable by any one with a role above a student in the course – so TAs, additional instructors, etc.
  • Click   Submit Paper .
  • Submit as Draft:  A SafeAssign report will be generated however the paper will not be added to the institutional database and will not be used to check other papers.
  • Skip Plagiarism Checking:  Adds the papers to the institutional database without checking for content copied from other sources. This is useful if an Instructor wants to upload papers from an earlier course to ensure that current students are not reusing work.
  • Select   Upload File  and browse for the file. Individual papers as well as papers that are grouped in a .ZIP package are accepted. Alternatively,  select   Copy/Paste Document  and add the document text or a portion of the document into the paper text field.
  • Click   Submit .

Result times vary depending on how many papers are be submitted to the system at any time.  Please allow for at least 2 hours.

Supported file types : Direct Submit supports the following file types:

  • Microsoft Word document: .doc or .docx
  • OpenOffice documents: .odt
  • Rich Text Format: .rtf
  • HTML: .htm or .html
  • Zip compressed: .ZIP used to upload multiple files.
  • Portable Document Format: .pdf

Common Issues :

Multiple Drafts : If you're planning to use Safe Assign on a writing assignment where students submit several drafts of the same paper, be sure to use the Multiple Attempts option because, otherwise, SafeAssign may incorrectly flag the second draft as self-plagiarism of the first.

Use as a teaching tool : Please don't use SafeAssign to punish your students for plagiarism if you haven't given them guidance on the rules. While it might be expected that, at the college level, one would not have to teach students to properly cite their sources, the truth of the matter is that many students don't yet have these skills, and the majority of plagiarism is accidental rather than intentional. Safe Assign allows students to check their paper for originality and, if they do so, then the software will let them know if there are issues to correct before they submit the paper to you. You'll get better papers as a result, and students will learn how to cite properly.

Submissions : Students can either compose a submission in the built-in editor by clicking the Write Submission button, or they can compose offline in a word processor (you should specify which file formats you'll accept) and upload the file by clicking Browse My Computer and selecting the file on their computer. Students sometimes mistakenly attempt to write their submission in the comments box, so be sure to tell them that the comments box is just for comments you would send to the instructor alongside the submission. If the submission is lengthy, or if the student wishes to retain a copy, we recommend composing offline. This also allows students to spell check and save as they go, and is important if they will be revising the paper after your feedback on the first draft. It's also possible to compose offline in your favorite word processor and then copy/paste the submission and submit it.

The Similarity Report

  • Understanding the Similarity Score for Students

Turnitin does not check for plagiarism . What we actually do is compare your submissions against our database and highlight wherever your writing is similar to one of our sources. Our database includes billions of web pages: both current and archived content from the internet, a repository of works other students have submitted to Turnitin in the past, and a collection of documents, which comprises thousands of periodicals, journals, and publications.

The Similarity Report provides a summary of details, including the sources matched to your submission, to use as a tool to determine if the matches are acceptable. When a Similarity Report is available for viewing, a similarity score percentage is made available.

The Similarity Score

The similarity score is the percentage of matched text your submission contains. We calculate this by dividing the total words in a submission by the amount of words matched to outside sources.

It is likely your submission will match against some of our database. If you've used quotes and references correctly, that will still be highlighted as a match.

Feedback Studio • Feedback Studio w/ Originality • OC

In this guide :

  • What do the Similarity score colors indicate?

How do I keep my score under a certain percentage?

  • How does Turnitin detect student collusion?

What do the similarity score colors indicate?

The color of the report icon indicates the similarity score of the paper. The percentage range is 0% to 100%. The possible similarity ranges are:

  • Blue: No matching text
  • Green : One word to 24% matching text
  • Yellow : 25-49% matching text
  • Orange : 50-74% matching text
  • Red : 75-100% matching text

Similarity Reports that have not yet finished generating are represented by a grayed out icon in the Similarity column. Reports that are not available may not have generated yet, or assignment settings may be delaying the generation of the report.

Overwritten or resubmitted papers may not generate a new Similarity Report for a full 24 hours. This delay is automatic and allows resubmissions to correctly generate without matching to the previous draft.

Your instructor may specify a range for acceptable scores. Before submitting, ensure your work contains enough of your own original writing compared to quoted material to fall within your instructor's accepted range.

Consult your syllabus, follow assignment instructions, contact your instructor directly, or review your institution's overarching policies on what counts as an acceptable similarity score before you submit. Every school, instructor, or assignment could very well have a different amount of matching text that is considered acceptable.

How does Turnitin identify student collusion?

Collusion is typically identified when a student's work matches with another student's submission on the same assignment or to previously submitted papers. Consider the following scenario:

Eric acquired a copy of his classmate Jane's paper. Eric submits Jane's paper as his own and receives a similarity score of 25%. Jane, who originally wrote the paper, submits her work a few days later and receives a 100% similarity score.

Turnitin can identify that collusion has taken place in this scenario by running a final similarity check against all submitted assignments after the due date. This ensures that every student is subject to the same level of scrutiny, regardless of when they submitted their assignments.

Similarity • SimCheck

In this guide:

Similarity score scenarios

safe assignment plagiarism checker

The percentage range is 0% to 100% with the possible similarity groupings being:

  • Green : 0% matching text
  • Blue : 1-24% matching text

A high similarity score does not always suggest that a piece of writing has been plagiarized, just as a low similarity score does not always indicate that no plagiarism has occurred. Consider the following scenarios:

  • Submitting a document of considerable size could result in a 0% similarity score with a report that still contains matches. This is because the similarity score has been rounded to 0%, rather than being exactly 0%.
  • You may have submitted multiple drafts of the same paper to your institution's private repository, meaning your final draft has resulted in a score of 100%. To avoid this issue, we advise that you only submit your final draft to the private repository.
  • An individual within your institution has managed to acquire a copy of your document. They submit this document to the institution's private repository and receive a similarity score of 25%. You submit your original document a week later to the private repository but receive a 100% similarity score.

Blackboard Learn Integration

Safeassign in action.

SafeAssign is based on a unique text-matching algorithm capable of detecting exact and inexact matching between a submitted paper and source material. This proprietary algorithm analyzes submission text and optimizes the words and terms to be searched against multiple data sources. Results returned from each service are further processed based on both the weight returned by the search service and comparative weighting by the SafeAssign algorithm, which determines the result set to be returned in the Originality Report.

Student submissions to SafeAssign are compared against several sources:

  • Institutional document archives : Contains all papers submitted to SafeAssign by users in their respective institutions.
  • Global Reference Database : Contains over 59 million papers volunteered by students from Blackboard client institutions to help prevent cross-institutional plagiarism.
  • ProQuest ABI/Inform Journal Database : More than 3,000 publication titles, 5 million documents, and over 200 topical categories from the 1970s to present time and covering topics from Advertising to Women's Studies.
  • Internet : SafeAssign searches across the broader internet for matching text using an internal search service.

Global Reference Database

The SafeAssign Global Reference Database is a separate database where students voluntarily submit copies of their papers to help prevent plagiarism. It is separate from each institution's internal database, where all papers are stored by each corresponding institution. Students are free to select the option to check their papers without submitting them to the Global Reference Database. Students are not required to submit papers to this database. They submit their papers voluntarily and agree not to delete papers in the future. Blackboard does not claim ownership of submitted papers.

Connect to the Global Reference Database

The Global Reference Database allows institutions to search their own data repository as well as many other data repositories. Access to the database is enabled by default. To connect to the Global Reference Database, ensure that the Blackboard Application servers are allowed to access the following host and ports.

These ports are for outgoing HTTP traffic only.

Blackboard Learn URL: safeassign.blackboard.com IP Address: 34.202.93.213 and 34.231.5.82 Ports: 80, 443

Allow incoming traffic on all established connections for Learn by allowing a connection with a flag other than SYNC on any port from the following IP Addresses: 34.202.93.213 and 34.231.5.82. SafeAssign makes web service calls to your Blackboard system from this IP.

Internal search engine

The internet search indexes used by SafeAssign are designed for reliability, performance, and efficiency against the large scale of search queries executed by SafeAssign. These search indexes can't be refreshed as frequently as those used by consumer internet search services. Generally, these indexes can be expected to be current within 1-3 days of a change. Due to the combination of these search index characteristics and the weighting applied by the SafeAssign algorithm, results returned in a SafeAssign Originality Report may not be identical to results returned by a consumer internet search service for any individual sentence or phrase.

Previously, Blackboard SafeAssign relied on the Yahoo! BOSS service to provide results from the broader internet. Due to the deprecation of the Yahoo! BOSS service on March 31, 2016, Blackboard has developed an internal search service to provide internet results for SafeAssign. No customer action is required to enable the SafeAssign internal search service, as the change was made in the SafeAssign Central Service and applies to all clients.

The internal search service is built using the latest search crawling and indexing technologies, and allows Blackboard to significantly reduce dependency and exposure to third-party tools. Because the search service is now administered internally, Blackboard has the ability to enhance and refine search results over time and improve the overall SafeAssign product quality and performance. Additionally, any potential concern of client data being shared with Blackboard partners is entirely mitigated using this new approach to providing search results from the internet.

Due to the ever-changing nature of the internet, there may be occasions when the SafeAssign internal search service does not yet include specific webpages or websites and as a consequence SafeAssign Originality Reports may not identify potentially matching text within student works. When these situations arise, Blackboard will investigate the source web content and, if possible, add the content to the SafeAssign internal search service for future submissions.

The development of the SafeAssign internal search service further demonstrates Blackboard's commitment to supporting the SafeAssign product functionality and Blackboard Learn customers' use of the SafeAssign service. As always, Blackboard will continue to monitor SafeAssign for improvement opportunities and encourages customer feedback regarding search results and overall SafeAssign performance.

As a reminder, results returned in a SafeAssign Originality Report may not be identical to results returned by a consumer internet search service (e.g.

SafeAssign Originality Reports

After a paper submission is processed, SafeAssign generates a report detailing the percentage of text in the paper that matches existing sources. The report also shows the suspected sources that return a match for each section of the submitted paper. Instructors can delete matching sources from the report and process it again. This is useful if the paper is a continuation of a previously submitted work by the same student.

In the Ultra Course View, SafeAssign generates an Originality Report for each part of the submission, including free form text answers and attachments.

How it Works: 4 Steps to Write More Responsibly with Paperpal

For those who are writing original content or using AI writing tools to polish their work, it’s important to note that the text could be flagged in a plagiarism check. This makes it important to run a similarity check and address any problem areas highlighted by the plagiarism detector. Here’s a simple step by step guide by Paperpal to help you write more responsibly.

STEP 1: Check your writing for similarity

Even when you’ve written original content and cited your sources, it’s recommended to run your work through the plagiarism check as a precaution. This can help pre-empt a situation where your institution or journal flags your paper for overlooked citations or similarity to certain sources.

STEP 2: Review report for actionable items

Once your paper is processed, carefully review the similarity report. Check the overall similarity score and review sentences with a high score against other sources. Examine each flagged source thoroughly to see if it is relevant to your work and identify all the problem areas that need to be addressed.

STEP 3: Write in your own voice

Some similarity is not unusual! Commonly used phrases, especially in the methods section, may bump up the similarity score. It’s important to add variety in your text, which is where Paperpal’s Rewrite features can help, but remember to refine AI-generated text to retain your unique style and authentic voice.

STEP 4: Cite any overlooked sources

Even when you’re writing on a novel topic, it’s prudent to contrast and validate your writing in the context of related published literature. If any publication is flagged as similar to your text, and it is relevant to your research work, you’ll need to address this. When using exact wording from another paper, use quotation marks and cite these works meaningfully in your paper.

In fact, if you incorporate text from published sources without proper citation, those sections will likely be flagged regardless of the writing tool.  If any of your input text to the Paperpal Generative AI (Copilot) was pasted from a published source, there will be a higher likelihood of the generated result being flagged as similar. Always cite the sources you’ve quoted in your work and incorporate a thoughtful analysis on how those works relate to your own article. In fact, AI-generated outputs may have high similarity to published works because the outputs may be based on published sources in the model’s training dataset.
